How To Tips / Re: How to keep your carpet looking new

7. Deep Clean Regularly

No matter how diligent you are with vacuuming and maintenance, your carpet will still need some extra TLC from time to time. It’s essential to do a deep cleaning every six months to keep floors looking fresh and grime-free. Whether you rent a carpet cleaner or bring in a professional service, steam cleaning extracts deeply embedded dirt as well as any lingering stains to leave your carpets looking brand-new.

6. Monitor High-Traffic Zones

Hallways, carpeted stairs, and rooms that experience a lot of foot traffic need a little extra attention. You may want to consider strategically layering an area rug or runner as another form of prevention, as it’s much easier (and cheaper) to replace these temporary coverings when they become soiled from dirt or spills.

5. Clean with Club Soda

If used correctly, club soda can become an essential (and natural) weapon to combat carpet stains. Whether you’re dealing with pet accidents, coffee, tea, or red wine, a healthy pour of club soda over the spill and a few dabs with a clean cloth should return your carpet to its original glory.

4. Trim Snags

Carpets, particularly Berbers, are bound to snag eventuallyâ€"especially if you have kids or pets. Rule number one: Never pull a snag. This will inevitably make the problem worse, as it’s likely that you’ll tear the carpet away from the backing. Instead, grab a pair of scissors and trim the snag at the base to prevent further damage.

3. Choose the Right Vacuum

It’s imperative that you choose the right vacuum for your household needs. Do you have kids or pets? Carpeted stairs? Because no model excels at all types of cleaning, it might be wise to invest in more than one vacuum so you can handle all your cleaning challenges. A cordless handheld vacuum can be convenient for stairs, for example, while an upright is great for large carpeted rooms.

2. Soak Up Spills

Spills are inevitable, but how you clean them makes all the difference. The most important carpet commandments to keep in mind are to work quickly and never rub. Dab cleaning solution onto the trouble spot immediatelyâ€"the longer you wait, the harder it will be to remove the stain. Then, blot with paper towels or a clean cloth, as this gently puts a small amount of pressure on the liquid, helping to soak it up instead of letting it set in. Remember to blot from the outside in to prevent the spill from spreading.

1. Vacuum Regularly

It’s obvious that vacuuming keeps your carpets clean, but this common chore is also the key to ensuring they stay looking like new. Dirt has abrasive qualities, and when it’s repeatedly ground into the carpet by everyday foot traffic, it can actually erode the backing over time. Vacuuming once a week (twice a week in busy areas) can remove up to 75 percent of the dirt and debris and prevent your carpet from aging before its time.

Tuesday, China’s National Bureau of Statistics releases its first estimate of 2015 gross domestic product.

Premier Li Keqiang on Saturday said growth last year came in around 7% for 2015, which was his target, announced last March.

Analysts polled by Reuters peg growth at 6.9%, which would be the lowest rate in 25 years.

Indicators for the year, however, point to a number in the low single digits, perhaps 1%.

In 2007, when Li was Communist Party secretary of Liaoning province, he told a visiting American diplomat that Beijing’s figures were “man-made,” politically directed and therefore unreliable. He said he looked at three factors when trying to understand what the economy was really doing: electricity consumption, rail freight volume, and bank lending.

So what does the “Li Keqiang Index,” as these factors are now known, tell us? The usage of electricity remains the most reliable single indicator of Chinese economic activity. In the first 11 months of 2015, electricity consumption increased 0.7%.

Rail freight volume fell 10.5% in 2015, according to Caixin, which cited the National Railway Administration.

New renminbi loans last year, according to the People’s Bank of China, amounted to 11.72 trillion yuan, an increase of 1.81 trillion yuan from 2014. Foreign-currency loans in 2015 fell $50.2 billion. In 2014, such loans increased $58.2 billion.

“In 2010, the village got 190 mm of rain, but we managed well because of water management,” said Habib Sayyed, who deals with water planning in the village. Thanks to these water conservation techniques, Hiware Bazar had another great harvest that year, and even had water to spare for a special patch of land where they preserve 100 different species of plants.

Hiware Bazar is now a model village, with a growing sense of discipline and order. The roads are clean and well-planned, cement houses have long replaced the derelict huts of old, liquor and tobacco have been banned, as have open defecation and urination. Every single house has a toilet, a fact that cannot be said about most villages in India, and people are genuinely happy and proud of their achievements.

With the water shortage resolved, many people who had left the village began to return. The number of families slowly went up from 90 to 235. The people were happier, collaborated more often, and solved problems together. Pawar set up systems so that two to three families could help each other on their farms, fostering a sense of community and avoiding the cost of hiring laborers. Today, they are able to harvest multiple crops, even taming and ploughing stubborn, rocky land for farming.

“I left for Mumbai in 1965 and worked there for 35 years,” said Yadav Dada Thange, a local farmer. “I heard about how the people in my village were successfully fighting drought by recharging rainwater. I decided to quit my job and come back to my village, Hiware Bazar. The empty wells I had left, now had plenty of water for my crops. Because of collective community participation, what has happened in my village is nothing short of a miracle.”

“Water management requires strong community participation,” Pawar explained. “Our village used to suffer from a lot of problems. Villagers realised how the scarcity of water was the source of all our problems. I told them that it is possible to get enough water for our needs, but only if we start saving all the rainwater we get.”

The projects worked. Although Hiware Bazar only received 15 inches of annual rainfall, the ponds and trenches they built saved every single drop water, preventing it from flowing out of the village. After just one monsoon, the irrigation area increased from 50 acres to 170 hectares. As the groundwater level began to rise, so did the villagers’ morale.

One of the first things Pawar did as sarpanch was to convince the villagers to close down about 22 liquor shops. Giving up one of the only things that brought them comfort, or at least an illusion of it, was not easy, but they eventually agreed.

The new leader then arranged for loans to poor farmers from the Bank of Maharashtra, and used some of the funds to start projects that would eventually improve the water supply in the region. Pawar started rainwater harvesting and water conservations schemes, and got the villagers to build 52 earthen bunds, 32 stone bunds, two percolation tanks and nine check dams.

Frustrated with the situation, lots of villagers moved to nearby towns and cities in search of odd jobs as laborers, despite owning several acres of land back home. About 90 percent of the population moved out, and those remaining had no prospects. The village sarpanch (leader) at the time was just an elderly figurehead with no vision and the youth of the village soon realized they lacked a strong leader to look to for guidance and support.

So they got together in 1989 and decided to approach a young man named Popatrao Pawar, the only villager with a graduate degree. Pawar was all set to leave the village too, in search of a white-collar job, but the villagers had different plans for him â€" they requested he run in the local elections and become their next sarpanch. Pawar wasn’t interested at first, but the villagers’ persistence finally wore him down. When he was unanimously elected sarpanch, he decided that the time had come for Hiware Bazar to shine.

The residents of Hiware Bazar, a remote village in the Ahmednagar district of the state of Maharashtra, India have managed to turn their fortune around in the span of just a few years â€" they’ve gone from being a drought-stricken populace in the mid-1990s to the richest village in the nation today. Their story is a truly inspiring one.

Hiware Bazar currently boasts of having the highest GDP among all the villages in India. Its 1,250-strong population enjoys an average income of INR 30,000 ($450) per month, also highest in the nation, up from a paltry INR 830 in 1995. 60 of the 235 families in the village are millionaires. Every year, their fields yield bountiful crops of millets, onions, and potatoes that make it hard to imagine that only a few years ago they were barren stretches of land that no one cared about.

Yet, up until the mid 90’s, Hiware Bazar was indeed a poverty-stricken village reeling in the aftermath of a severe drought in 1972. “The peace was shattered,” recalls Raosaheb Rauji Panwar, an 82-year-old villager. “People became irritable and restless as the struggle to stay alive became severe. Petty reasons were enough to trigger-off bitter quarrels, as there was so much despair and frustration. Villagers started consuming liquor and it added to our ruin.”

The terms psychopath and sociopath are often used interchangeably, but they aren't quite the same thing.

So what's the difference, you ask?

To find out, we asked James Fallon, a neuroscientist at the University of California at Irvine School of Medicine who specializes in studying psychopaths (and also happens to be one himself).

While neither term appears in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the medical handbook used by psychiatrists, psychopaths can be divided into two categories, according to Fallon. The first category includes what are known as primary psychopaths. The second includes what are known as secondary psychopaths, or sociopaths.

Dad Killed Son, 3, In Fear of Losing His Girlfriend Who Disliked Children: Prosecutors
By Inside Edition
January 13, 2016 10:01 AM

A New Jersey man was charged with murdering his three-year-old son, allegedly killing the child because he feared the boy was getting in the way of his relationship with his teenage girlfriend, prosecutors said.

Little Brendan Creato was found dead on October 13, less than a mile from his dad’s apartment, where he had been dropped off a day earlier.

His father, David “D.J.” Creato, Jr., reported the toddler missing around 6 a.m., telling a 911 operator that he had woken up to find his son was missing.

“I just woke up and he wasn’t in my apartment,” Creato, 22, said. “I don’t know if he wandered out or what happened. I don’t know where he is.

“The door was locked. I guess he unlocked it and left,” he continued.

Brendan’s body was found by a K-9 unit partially submerged in water in a wooded area off South Park Drive about 9 a.m., officials said. He was still wearing his pajamas.

The child’s cause of death is still undetermined, but medical examiners reportedly found he died of “homicidal violence,” prosecutors said.

Brendan’s brain showed a lack of oxygen before his death, indicating causes such as drowning, smothering or asphyxiation, WPVI reported.

He also had a fresh bruise near his collarbone, investigators said.

Investigators reportedly did not believe that Brenden went to that area on his own, as the boy’s socks were clean despite the muddy surroundings.

The area is very steep at one point and difficult to navigate, authorities said.

He was also known to be afraid of the dark, so it was unlikely he would have gone into the wooded area before it was daylight, prosecutors said.

There were no signs of forced entry at the home, where Brendan slept on a love seat nine feet from his dad’s bedroom, she continued.

“Never once had he left the apartment or his mother’s house or his grandparents’ by himself,” Shah said.

The boy’s father was arrested on Monday and charged with first-degree murder and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, officials said.

Prosecutors allege that Creato killed his own son after his 17-year-old girlfriend had told him she disliked children and “issued an ultimatum to him,” saying it was either her or him.

She told Creato that he would have to give up taking custody of Brendan every other weekend to be with her, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The pair had begun dating in June 2015 after meeting on the app Tinder, remaining together despite the girl’s open “dislike” of children, prosecutors said.

She had written a series of “unbelievable” blogs in which she described her “strong dislike of children,” Camden County Assistant Prosecutor Christine Shah said at Creato’s arraignment on Tuesday.

The infinite monkey theorem states that a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare.

In this context, "almost surely" is a mathematical term with a precise meaning, and the "monkey" is not an actual monkey, but a metaphor for an abstract device that produces an endless random sequence of letters and symbols. One of the earliest instances of the use of the "monkey metaphor" is that of French mathematician Émile Borel in 1913, but the first instance may be even earlier. The relevance of the theorem is questionableâ€"the probability of a universe full of monkeys typing a complete work such as Shakespeare's Hamlet is so tiny that the chance of it occurring during a period of time hundreds of thousands of orders of magnitude longer than the age of the universe is extremely low (but technically not zero). It should also be noted that real monkeys do not produce uniformly random output, which means that an actual monkey hitting keys for an infinite amount of time has no statistical certainty of ever producing any given text. --Wiki

The annual assessment of risks conducted by the WEF before its annual meeting in Davos on 20-23 January showed that global warming had catapulted its way to the top of the list of concerns.

A failure of climate change mitigation and adaptation was seen as likely to have a bigger impact than the spread of weapons of mass destruction, water crises, mass involuntary migration and a severe energy price shock â€" the first time in the 11 years of the Global Risks report that the environment has been in first place. -- http://www.theguardian.com/

Heat and Volume Fluxes at the Turtle Pits Vent Site, southern Mid Atlantic Ridge
https://www.researchgate.net/
May 2010â€,

Abstract

The Turtle Pits vent site consists of eight known high temperature vents and several diffuse vent sites which are distributed over three hydrothermal fields: Turtle Pits, Comfortless Cove, and Red Lion. These vent fields are located in a north-south orientated rift valley at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) near 5°S. The total volume and heat emissions of the entire Turtle Pits site have been calculated with three different approaches using data collected during a Meteor cruise in May 2006 and a L'Atalante cruise in January 2008. The data sets consist of vertical profiles and towed transects of temperature, salinity, and turbidity, as well as direct velocity measurements with a lowered acoustic Doppler current profiler (LADCP) and water samples for Helium isotope analysis. Vent fluid samples for noble gas analysis where taken with ROVs. Since the vent fluid is highly enriched in primordial 3He this noble gas can be used as a conservative tracer for vent fluid. The geographical setting of the vent site confines the particle plume to the rift valley since the depth of the valley exceeds the rise height of the plume. Therefore the fluxes of heat and volume can be estimated from the horizontal helium transport in the valley in combination with a mean 3He endmember concentration determined from the water samples taken with the ROVs. The comparison of the 3He concentrations measured south of the hydrothermal vents with the 3He signal north of the hydrothermal vents suggests a rather strong northward flow. This is confirmed by the tide corrected velocities observed with the LADCP during the Meteor cruise. The northward volume transport has been calculated using the local bathymetry and tide corrected velocities from the Meteor cruise. In combination with the 3He concentrations and the average 3He endmember concentration a flux of 1000 l/s is estimated, which corresponds to a heat flux of 1400 MW. The measured temperature anomalies within the plume combined with the known background stratification and the mean flow velocity within the valley yield an estimate of the total flux of the hydrothermal vents which is significantly lower. Similar results have been calculated using the rise height of the particle plume estimated from the measured temperature anomalies in combination with the background stratification. In contrast to the flux calculated from the 3He concentrations the fluxes calculated from the temperature anomaly and the plume rise height only take the emissions from hot vents into account and exclude emissions from diffuse vent sites.

Hmm, while run-of-the mill scientists might indeed be inclined to be blunt and prosaic, I know one or two who would not hesitate to call it "Entrance to a Schwarzschild wormhole that allows superluminal travel not subject to Gaussâ€"Bonnet gravity".
