Baclayon - Bohol / Happy Fiesta
December 08, 2008, 12:11:47 PM
Baclayon,  the oldest town of Bohol celebrates its town fiesta today, Dec. 8,  of the Immaculae Conception of the blessed Virgin Mary.

Happy Fiesta..

What is the immaculate conception?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question: "What is the immaculate conception?"

Answer: Many people mistakenly believe that the immaculate conception refers to the conception of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ conception was most assuredly immaculate…but this concept does not refer to Jesus at all. The immaculate conception is a doctrine of the Romans Catholic Church in regards to Mary, Jesus’ mother. An official statement of the doctrine reads, “…the blessed Virgin Mary to have been, from the first instant of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of Almighty God, in view of the merits of Christ Jesus the Savior of Mankind, preserved free from all stain of original sin.” Essentially the immaculate conception is the belief that Mary was protected from original sin, that Mary did not have a sin nature, and was, in fact, sinless.

The problem with the doctrine of the immaculate conception is that it is not taught in the Bible. The Bible nowhere describes Mary as anything but an ordinary human female whom God chose to be the mother of the Lord Jesus Christ. Mary was undoubtedly a godly woman (Luke 1:28). Mary was surely a wonderful wife and mother. Jesus definitely loved and cherished His mother (John 19:27). The Bible gives us no reason to believe that Mary was sinless. In fact, the Bible gives us every reason to believe that Jesus Christ is the only Person who was not “infected” by sin and never committed a sin (Ecclesiastes 7:20; Romans 3:23; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 2:22; 1 John 3:5).

The doctrine of the immaculate conception originated out of confusion over how Jesus Christ could be born sinless if He was conceived inside of a sinful human female. The thought was that Jesus would have inherited a sinful nature from Mary had she been a sinner. In contrast to the immaculate conception, the Biblical solution to this problem is understanding that Jesus Himself was miraculously protected from being polluted by sin while He was inside Mary's womb. If God was capable of protecting Mary from sin, would He not be able to protect Jesus from sin? Therefore, Mary being sinless is neither necessary or Biblical.

The Roman Catholic Church argues that the immaculate conception is necessary because without it, Jesus would have been the object of His own grace. The thought goes like this – for Jesus to have been miraculously preserved from sin, which itself would be an act of grace, that would mean God essentially “graced Himself.” The word grace means “unmerited favor.” Grace is giving someone something he or she does not deserve. God performing a miracle in preserving Jesus from sin is not “grace.” In no sense could Jesus possibly be infected with sin. He was perfect and sinless humanity joined with sinless divinity. God cannot be infected or affected by sin, as He is perfectly holy. This same truth applies to Jesus. It did not take “grace” to protect Jesus from sin. Being God incarnate, Jesus was in His essence “immune” from sin.

So, the doctrine of the immaculate conception is neither Biblical or necessary. Jesus was miraculously conceived inside Mary, who was a virgin at the time. That is the Biblical concept of the virgin birth. The Bible does not even hint that there was anything significant about Mary’s conception. If we examine this concept logically, Mary’s mother would have to be immaculately conceived as well. How could Mary be conceived without sin if her mother was sinful? The same would have to be said of Mary’s grandmother, great-grandmother, and so on. So, in conclusion, the immaculate conception is not a Biblical teaching. The Bible teaches the miraculous virgin conception of Jesus Christ, not the immaculate conception of Mary.

Looking for a Teacher Appreciation Week idea? This sonnet is a teacher poem for older students and adults to give to their teachers or professors. Put this on a classy looking card. It's a teacher appreciation poem certain to make an impact.

Sonnet For An Unforgettable Teacher

(Teacher's name),
When I began your class I think I knew
The kind of challenges you'd make me face.
You gave me motivation to pursue
The best, and to reject the commonplace.

Your thinking really opened up my mind.
With wisdom, style and grace, you made me see,
That what I'd choose to seek, I'd surely find;
You shook me out of my complacency.

I thank you now for everything you've done;
What you have taught me I will not outgrow.
Your kind attention touched my mind and heart;
In many ways that you will never know.

I will remember you my whole life through;
I wish that all my teachers were like you.

The Best Teachers

Teachers open up young minds,
showing them the wonders of the intellect
and the miracle
of being able to think for themselves.
A teacher exercises
the mental muscles of students,
stretching and strengthening,
so they can make challenging decisions,
find their way in the world,
and become independent.
The best teachers care enough
To gently push and prod students
to do their best
and fulfill their potential.
You are one of those.
Thank you.

Preschool and Kindergarten Teacher Poems

Teacher poems can be for students of different ages. Just as I designed "Sonnet For An Unforgettable Teacher" for advanced high school or college level students to give to their teachers, I also wrote poems from child to teacher. I tried to write this kid poem for teacher for the youngest studentsâ€"a kindergarten teacher poem, for example. Keeping the vocabulary simple while saying something heartfelt (plus making it rhyme) wasn’t easy. Here’s the result--a poem for the preschool teacher.

Special Teacher

Thank you special teacher
For helping me to know
The things I need to learn
To live my life and grow.

I feel good with you because
Your teaching makes me see,
If I work at it, I can do it.
Thanks for showing me!

And here's another teacher poem for a younger child, a poem for Teacher Appreciation Week. It's suitable for an end of year poem for teacher or a goodbye poem for teacher.

We'll Remember You

Thank you teacher for helping us
To learn what we need to know
We'll all remember you
No matter where we go.

Thank you teacher for being
So nice and kind and good;
We like you so much, teacher,
We'd stay here if we could!

Teacher poems can talk about different kinds of teachers. We’ve all had teachers we remember all our lives, the star teachers. This teacher appreciation poem is for that kind of teacher. This fits well in a card, or you could print and frame it and use it as a teacher appreciation gift idea. It’s a great way to say Happy Teacher Day!

Star Teacher

I always love your class;
Your teaching helps me see,
That to have a happy life,
Learning is the key.

You understand your students;
You’re sensitive and smart.
You’re a skillful teacher;
I knew it from the start.

I’m grateful for your wisdom
For the teacher that you are;
You’re a very good person,
And as a teacher, you’re a star!

I'll Remember You Always

Rarely does someone
get to influence a person's life
in a positive way
for a lifetime,
as a teacher can,
fostering optimism and confidence,
providing knowledge that leads to success,
and being a good role model,
as you have,
and you are,
and you will...
forever.
I'll remember you always.
Thank you.

Lessons hard to comprehend.

Thank you for your caring

Poem From Teacher To Student

During National Teacher Appreciation Week, while students are looking for teacher poems, perhaps teachers might like this poem from teacher to student to give to their best and brightest, or even to the whole class.

Students Like You

With students like you, teaching is easy
I look forward to each day;
Your wondering minds keep me on my toes;
You make teaching more like play.

Students like you make teaching rewarding;
When I go home, I’m content;
You pay attention, you learnâ€"giving me
A sense of accomplishment.

Thank you for being the way you are,
For making my job so much fun.
I’ll remember how good you made me feel,
Even when my teaching is done.

Teacher Prayer

Many thousands of people are typing teacher prayer into their search box, so I wrote a free verse teacher poem to be used as a teacher prayer. Here it is.

Teacher Prayer

Dear Lord, bless these teachers mightily
as they seek to teach, enrich and guide
Your precious children.
Grant them abundant resources to do their job,
intelligence, wisdom, sensitivity, kindness,
and the material things that make it possible
to turn some of these tender green plants
into the strong, stable trees that will lead our nation,
to transform some of these buds into brilliant flowers
that will bring light, color and happiness
to all who encounter them,
and to give every one of them the tools
to be creative, and productive and to develop
their own kind of success in the world.
Lord, wrap Your loving arms around these teachers
who give so much of themselves to grow our youth
into creative, responsible adults.
We pray that You will immerse them
in your boundless, transcendent love.
We pray that You will strengthen and soothe them
when they have given so much of themselves
that they need Your extra attention, Your extra care.
We love, respect and admire these teachers, Lord
and we pray that you will watch over them always--
these special people who hold our children
and our future in their hands.
Amen.

Based on the writing of JErold Aust, Christ wqas not born on DEc. 25. It is clear
in the Bible in Luke, Chapter 2, verse 8 to 14, that sherperds watched their flocks        overnight. This means that it happened before winter time. December is the peak
time  of winter and you can,t stay outdoor during the cold season.

We celebrate Christmas because Christ was born but not on Christmas Day.

WAS CHRIST BORN ON CHRISTMAS  DAY, Dec, 25?

Do you observe Christmas because you think it's Christ's birthday? Was He born on or anytime near Dec. 25? If Jesus lived on earth today, would He celebrate Christmas at all?
by Jerold Aust
We should sit up and take notice of remarks from a popular American comedian and actor, Drew Carey. At a White House correspondents' dinner on May 5, Mr. Carey directed his comments to the president and vice president and their wives, several military and civilian dignitaries and a host of Hollywood entertainers:

"I can't watch the news lately," he said. "It gets too depressing. What I do now is turn the news off, get out my Bible and turn to the book of Revelation. I start just checking things off ... Got it, got it, need it, got it, need it ... Red dragon, seven horns, 10 crowns, got it.

"Yeah, I read the Bible a lot, you know. It's just crazy [the way] we celebrate holidays in the United States. I found out just recently there are so many religious holidays we celebrate here in this country that have nothing to do with the Bible at all. Real famous holidays, like Christmas. Christmas has nothing to do with the Bible.

"The birth of Jesus is in the Bible, but not Christmas. The tree is not in the Bible, you know. Giftsâ€"that's not there either. There's no place where it says, '"Celebrate my birthday," says Jesus.' It's a pagan holiday that the Romans invented that we just do. But everywhere you go, I'm telling you, I've seen this so many times, you see a nativity scene and there's baby Jesus, the manger, sheep, shepherds, Mary, Joseph and Santa Claus right in the middle. Who's he? Mary's [birthing] coach? Santa Claus has nothing to do with anything."

Drew Carey actually brought up a serious side of Christmas: that history exposes the holiday as nothing more than a pagan observance dressed up in Christian garb.

Does the question of whether Christmas is biblical or not make any difference? What must Jesus Christ think about the feel-good, commercially driven season that supposedly honors Him?

Christmas before Christ?
Just what are the origins of Christmas? Did it really originate among pagan peoples before Jesus' birth, as Mr.Carey said?

History, in fact, shows that Christmas predates Christ by many centuries. Tertullian, an early cleric of the Catholic Church (A.D. 155-220), taught that Christmas and the New Year's season were paganâ€"in other words, they were based on the polytheistic religions of ancient Rome and its predecessors. He acknowledged that this infamous annual pagan season stretched from early December to early January. To the church, Tertullian railed against the entire season as a time of wholly heathen practices.

Born a non-Christian, Tertullian was sent by his parents to Rome to study law. There, according to Walter Elwell, "he was converted to Christianity and rejected his licentious mode of life. Returning to Carthage, he gave himself passionately to the propagation and defense of the gospel [as he understood it]. Ultimately disenchanted with the laxity of the Roman Church, he broke away and espoused the rigorous asceticism and enthusiasm of Montanism ... [He weighed the] practical aspects of Christian living [against] the failings of early Catholicism and [offered] polemic arguments against the heathen and heretics" (Tertullian, 2001, p. 1176).

Tertullian defended the Christianity of his day against the growing influx of heathen practices, particularly in the Christmas and New Year's season. In his comments we see reference to the pagans' holiday trappings that have passed down largely unchanged to our day: "On your day of gladness, we [Christians] neither cover our doorposts with wreaths, nor intrude upon the day with lamps. At the call of public festivity, you consider it a proper thing to decorate your house like some new brothel. We are accused of a lower sacrilege because we do not celebrate along with you the holidays of the Caesars in a manner forbidden alike by modesty, decency, and purity" (quoted by David Bercot, A Dictionary of Early Christian Beliefs, 1998, p. 342).

Continuing his comments on the season of Christmas and New Year's, Tertullian wrote: "The Roman traitors clad their doorposts with green and branching laurels. They smoked up their porches with lofty and brilliant lamps" (ibid.). Addressing Catholic Christians of his day about Christmas, he admonished, "Furthermore, you Christians [should] have no acquaintance with the festivals of the Gentiles" (ibid.).

Tertullian also contrasted the pagans' faithfulness to their pagan festivities with Christians' faithlessness and their tendency to compromise their beliefs: "The Saturnalia, New Year, Midwinter festivals, and Matronalia are frequented by us! Presents come and go! There are New Year's gifts! Games join their noise! Banquets join their din! The pagans are more faithful to their own sect. For, even if they had known them, they would not have shared the Lord's Day or Pentecost with us. For they would fear lest they would appear to be Christians. Yet, we are not apprehensive that we might appear to be pagans" (ibid., emphasis added).

What an incredible admission by an early Latin-church leader. The pagans were more faithful to their traditions than the church was to its traditions. Tertullian chastised professing Christians of his day by reminding them they were following pagan traditions that predated Christ's birth.

The surprising origins of Christmas
Many reputable authors have written well-researched books documenting the origins of Christian holidays, and many encyclopedias summarize the same information. They have no religious ax to grind; they simply report the historical record.

One such book is The Oxford Guide to Ideas and Issues of the Bible (Bruce Metzger and Michael Coogan, editors, 2001). In its entry "Christmas," this source reports: "Twenty-five December was by the fourth century [A.D.] the date of the winter solstice, celebrated in antiquity as the birthday of Mithras [an ancient Persian god] and of Sol Invictus [the 'unconquered' sun god]. In the Julian calendar the solstice fell on 6 January, when the birthday of Osiris [the Egyptian god of the dead] was celebrated at Alexandria. By about 300 CE [A.D.], 6 January was the date of the Epiphany in the East, a feast always closely related to Christmas.

"The earliest mention of 25 December for Christmas is in the Philocalian Calendar of 354, part of which reflects Roman practice in 336. Celebration of Christ's birthday was not general until the fourth century; in fact, as late as the fifth century the Old Armenian Lectionary of Jerusalem still commemorated James and David on 25 December, noting 'in other towns they keep the birth of Christ'" (p. 95, emphasis added).

Modern Christians should be shocked that as late as the mid-fourth century not all Christians had yet begun celebrating the pagan festivals of Christmas and New Year's. The Oxford Guide also notes that Christmas has its roots in the winter solstice, celebrated anciently as the birthday of the sun and the Persian deity Mithras.

More on Mithras
Sir James George Frazer wrote a well-researched book on Christian holidays, The Golden Bough. He expands on the origin of Christmas as the birthday of the ancient Persian god Mithras: "... There can be no doubt that the Mithraic religion proved a formidable rival to Christianity, combining as it did a solemn ritual with aspirations after moral purity and a hope of immortality. Indeed the issue of the conflict between the two faiths appears for a time to have hung in the balance. An instructive relic of the long struggle is preserved in our festival of Christmas, which the Church seems to have borrowed directly from its heathen rival.

"In the Julian calendar the twenty-fifth of December was reckoned the winter solstice, and it was regarded as the Nativity of the Sun, because the day begins to lengthen and the power of the sun to increase from that turning-point of the year. The ritual of the nativity, as it appears to have been celebrated in Syria and Egypt, was remarkable. The celebrants retired into certain inner shrines, from which at midnight they issued with a loud cry, 'The Virgin has brought forth! The light is waxing!'

"The Egyptians even represented the new-born sun by the image of an infant which on his birthday, the winter solstice, they brought forth and exhibited to his worshippers. No doubt the Virgin who thus conceived and bore a son on the twenty-fifth of December was the great Oriental [i.e., Middle Eastern] goddess whom the Semites called the Heavenly Virgin or simply the Heavenly Goddess; in Semitic lands she was a form of Astarte [also known as Easter]. Now Mithra was regularly identified by his worshippers with the Sun, the Unconquered Sun, as they called him; hence his nativity also fell on the twenty-fifth of December" (1996, p. 416).

Like many good researchers, Sir James Frazer followed the thread of Christmas through historical records and came up with one inescapable conclusion: Christmas is but a relic of the worship of a pagan god known by the Persians as Mithra or Mithras. In other words, those who observe Christmas today simply keep an ancient idolatrous holiday season dressed in Christian symbolism!

Paganism relabeled
Why did the early Catholic Church adopt the pagan holiday of Christmas? Frazer continues: "What considerations led the ecclesiastical authorities to institute the festival of Christmas? The motives for the innovation are stated with great frankness by a Syrian writer, himself a Christian.

"'The reason,' he tells us, 'why the fathers transferred the celebration of the sixth of January to the twenty-fifth of December was this. It was a custom of the heathen to celebrate on the same twenty-fifth of December the birthday of the Sun, at which they kindled lights in token of festivity. In these solemnities and festivities the Christians also took part. Accordingly when the doctors of the Church perceived that the Christians had a leaning to this festival, they took counsel and resolved that the true Nativity should be solemnized on that day and the festival of the Epiphany on the sixth of January. Accordingly, along with this custom, the practice has prevailed of kindling fires till the sixth.'

"The heathen origin of Christmas is plainly hinted at, if not tacitly admitted, by Augustine when he exhorts his Christian brethren not to celebrate that solemn day like the heathen on account of the sun, but on account of him who made the sun. In like manner [Pope] Leo the Great rebuked the pestilent belief that Christmas was solemnized because of the birth of the new sun, as it was called, and not because of the nativity of Christ. Thus it appears that the Christian Church chose to celebrate the birthday of its Founder on the twenty-fifth of December in order to transfer the devotion of the heathen from the Sun to him who was called the Sun of Righteousness" (pp. 416-417).

Thus we see that one of the ancient world's most popular celebrationsâ€"a festival honoring pagan godsâ€"was renamed and reborn as traditional Christianity's most popular celebration.

Born on Dec. 25?
Honest scholars admit that the customs of Christmas and a Dec. 25 celebration long predate the birth of Christ. Nevertheless, wasn't Jesus born on Dec. 25? Let's look at some of the scriptural evidence.

Luke's Gospel, describing Christ's birth, tells us: "So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night" (Luke 2:6-8, emphasis added throughout).

We see that when Jesus was born shepherds were spending the night with their flocks in open fields. In that region, from December to February, though the heat of the day might feel comfortable enough when the human body is covered, the cold of the night was piercing. Thus the shepherds never kept their flocks and herds out in the open country from December through Februaryâ€"it was simply too cold (Alexander Hislop, The Two Babylons, 1959, p. 2). This in itself tells us that Jesus could not have been born anywhere near Dec. 25.

The Roman census system is another historical proof that Jesus wasn't born in December. Luke 2:1 tells us that "it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered." However, this would not have happened in winter because "the middle of winter was not fitting for such a business, especially for women with child, and children to travel in. Therefore, Christ could not be born in the depth of winter ... And if any shall think the winter wind was not so extreme in these parts, let him remember the words of Christ in the gospel, 'pray that your flight be not in the winter'" (Hislop, p. 92).

The Romans were efficient administrators. They would never consciously choose a time to register every man, woman and child when travel would have been so difficult because of cold and inclement weather. Here, too, is biblical proof that Jesus was not born in December's cold weather.

A far more likely scenario is that Jesus was born in the autumn, around the time of the biblical Feast of Tabernacles (Leviticus 23:34-36), when Joseph and Mary would have traveled to Jerusalem to keep the Feast along with thousands of other Jewish families. This also helps us understand why in the town Bethlehem, a few miles to the south of Jerusalem, "there was no room for them in the inn" (Luke 2:7)â€"the town would have been crowded with other travelers keeping the Feast at this time of year. (For additional biblical evidence that Jesus was likely born at this time and not on or near Dec. 25, request our free booklet Holidays or Holy Days: Does It Really Matter Which Days We Keep?)

Did the apostles keep Christmas?
It's clear that Jesus wasn't born on Dec. 25. But could the apostles have instituted Christmas in the Church after Jesus' death and resurrection?

Nowhere in the New Testament can you find one iota of scriptural evidence that Jesus or any one of the apostles ever kept Christmas or taught anyone to keep this pagan celebration.

Jesus sternly corrected the religious teachers of His day who substituted human traditions and teachings for God's truths: "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites ... All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition" (Mark 7:6-9).

Further, Jesus instructed His apostles not to vary from God's edicts in the Old Testament: "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:17-19).

One of the commandments to which Jesus referred concerned God's instruction about honoring Him with pagan practicesâ€"the very thing Christmas does. Notice it in Deuteronomy 12:30-32: "... Do not inquire after their gods, saying, 'How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.' You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way ... Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it."

Rather than teaching Christians to adopt pagan practices in their worship, Jesus and the apostles plainly kept and taught Christians to keep God's Holy Days and festivals first recorded in the Old Testament (see Leviticus 23).

They kept the Christian Passover (1 Corinthians 11:23-26), the Days of Unleavened Bread (Acts 20:6; 1 Corinthians 5:7-8), Pentecost (Acts 2:1; 20:16) and the fall feastsâ€"the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement (called "the Fast" in Acts 27:9), the Feast of Trumpets, and the Feast of Tabernacles, along with the Last Great Day (John 7).

The apostle John is direct in his evaluation of any who claim to be Christian but refuse to follow Christ's laws and commandments: "He who says, 'I know Him,' and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him" (1 John 2:4).

Scripture proves God never sanctioned Christmas, nor does Scripture reveal Jesus' birth date. Available evidence suggests that He might have been born sometime in late September or perhaps early October. "There is no certainty as to the month or day of the birth [of Jesus]. The Christmas date, December 25, is first met within the West in the 4th century, and was then possibly borrowed from a pagan festival. December, in the winter season, seems unlikely, as unsuitable for the pasturing of flocks. A more probable date is a couple of months earlier" (The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, 1986, "Jesus Christ," p. 1628).

Would Jesus keep Christmas today?
Faced with these historical facts, and God's clear instruction about mixing pagan practices with worship of Him, we can conclude only that Jesus would not keep Christmas today. Christmas is, in fact, an affront to Him.

In the Old Testament, God pronounced a curse on Israel for adopting pagan feast days: "Behold, I will rebuke your seed, and will spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your feasts; and ye shall be taken away with it" (Malachi 2:3, American Standard Bible). The Scriptures give us no reason to think that God's abhorrence of the celebration of pagan festivals to honor Him is any less today!

Satan, the great deceiver (Revelation 12:9), has duped mankind for millennia with his pagan holidays. He doesn't portray them as they really are, which Paul describes as "fellowship with demons" (1 Corinthians 10:20). Paul knew that Satan "transforms himself into an angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14). Satan has, for the time being, successfully substituted himself as this world's god in the place of the true God. He has counterfeited God's truth and true Holy Days, substituting his false religious holidays in their place.

If you keep Christmas and other religious holidays not sanctioned by the Bible, you have been hoodwinked by the god of this world into honoring him as an angel of light. Christmas trees, mistletoe, holly wreaths and Santa Claus don't honor Jesus' birth; they represent and honor pagan cult figures that predate Christ by centuries. Jesus was not born on Dec. 25, and, if He were on earth today, He not only wouldn't keep Christmas but He would rebuke any who would. God finds Christmas offensive because it blinds mankind from Him and His truth.

If you want to know which days Jesus wants you to keep, simply write for our free booklet on God's true feasts and Holy Days. You'll be surprised at what you'll learn. GN

Many people are shocked to discover the origins of our most popular religious holidays. They're also surprised to find that the days God commands us to observe in the Bibleâ€"the same days Jesus Christ and the apostles kept â€"are almost universally ignored. Why? Also, why are today's supposedly Christian holidays observed with so many rituals and customs that are not sanctioned anywhere in the Bible? Philippine History / Bonifacio Day is Nov. 30
November 30, 2008, 03:51:03 PM
If Andres Bonifacio were alive today, how old is he now?

Andres Bonifacio (1863-1897) was the foremost Philippine revolutionary who organized the KKKAnB which spearheaded the 1896 Revolution against Spain.

Andres Bonifacio was born to Santiago Bonifacio and Catalina de Castro, a Spanish mestiza in Tondo, manila on November 30, 1863. He started his early education in the school of Guillermo Osmeña of Cebu. He reached only primary school. At the age of 14, his father and mother died, forcing him to quit his studies and to look after his younger brothers and sisters. As a means of support, he had them help him make wooden canes and paper fans, which he sold in the streets.

Having learned how to read and write, he became a clerk messenger of Fleming and Company, a business firm dealing with rattan, tar, and other articles of trade. Because of his industry he was promoted as agent. But his earning were still not sufficient to support the orphans. He moved to Fressell and Company as an agent. He showed determination and industry in his job. He supplemented his education through further reading and self-study. He wrote poetry and even became a stage actor in moro-moro. He later became a mason and a sworn enemy of Spanish authorities.

He became a member of La Liga Filipina, an organization founded by Jose Rizal upon his return from Europe. But when Rizal was deported to Dapitan making the Liga practically dead as an organization, he quickly organized the Kataastaasang Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan. This organization spread rapidly in 1894 in many parts of the Philippines. He felt that he was about ready to lead a successful revolt in May 1896. However, before he could act, the Katipunan was discovered by the authorities. More than 1,000 Katipuneros assembled with him at Pugad Lawin, Caloocan, on August 23, 1896 and tore their cedulas. Since the time the Katipunan was discovered, they evaded arrest, won uncertain victories and incurred severe defeats. This prompted the Magdiwang faction to invite Bonifacio to Cavite to settle their differences and remain united.

An assembly was called at Tejeros, Cavite. Bonifacio presided the conference to establish the Republic of the Philippines. In the election, Emilio Aguinaldo was elected President, Mariano Trias, Vice-President and Bonifacio as Secretary of the Interior. Daniel Tirona questioned Bonifacio's qualifications, and Bonifacio was offended. Evoking his authority as the supreme head of the Katipunan, he declared the proceedings void. Bonifacio moved to Naic, Cavite and started to form his own government and army. Meantime, the advancing troops of Spanish General Camilo de Polavia threatened to capture Cavite. Aguinaldo ordered Gen Pio del Pilar and Noriel who were being given new higher positions to leave the Bonifacio camp and go back to their duties.

Bonifacio with his family and men left Naic for Indang. On his return from Montalban, Aguinaldo sent men to arrest him, but Bonifacio resisted arrest and was wounded. He faced a trial for acts inimical to the existence of the new government and was given the death sentence by a military tribunal. Aguinaldo's men executed him in the mountains of Maragondon, Cavite on May 10, 1897.

Corella - Bohol / Re: Need for inventory of tarsiers
November 30, 2008, 03:46:03 PM

The Philippine tarsier looks so cute and cuddly, many people would like to keep it as a pet.

In a cage, however, the tarsier has only a slim chance of surviving, according to Corazon Catibog-Sinha, Assistant Director of the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB), a line agency of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). "In captivity, the tarsier can be so extremely distressed it may die of psychological trauma," explains Dr. Catibog-Sinha. In the wilds, a tarsier is expected to live up to 24 years. In captivity, however, a tarsier's life expectancy is a little more than 12 years.

Many tarsiers seized from the wilds and placed in captivity survive only for two to five years. Some tarsiers captured and placed in enclosures have even been reported to commit suicide by smashing their heads against objects. Hunted down to be sold as pets in Metro Manila, the tarsier has become an endangered species. The dwindling number of tarsier in the country has also been traced to the rapid destruction of their known forest habitats. Most of the Philippine tarsiers are found in Bohol, Southern Philippines. In the 1960's tarsiers were a common sight on the highway that cuts through the forested hill of Corella town," recalls Mr. Carlito Pizarras. Mr. Pizarras earned the monicker "Tarsier Man" for being the only person who has successfully cared for and bred the Philippine tarsier in captivity. The hunter turned conservationist claims to have succeeded in breeding 20 tarsiers in captivity. "Today, only about 1,000 tarsiers can be found in the wilds of Corella, Bohol," says the gamekeeper of the Philippine Tarsier Foundation Inc. (PTFI). The foundation is based in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

GIVE COMMENTS OF THESE TWO VERSIONS.

Nuns and priests are Catholic, not Christians. The Catholic church does not allow its priests to marry. Supposedly this is because the Catholic church believes that Peter, allegedly the first "priest" did not marry. But the Bible makes at least two references to Peter's wife. See 1 Corinthians 9:5 (which uses Peter's Greek name "Cephas") and Matthew 8:14 (which references Peter's mother in-law).

Christian pastors can marry and, in fact, are encouraged to marry, so they can teach the congregation on issues related to marriage and parenting. Something Catholic priests can't really do a good job at having no first hand experience in these matters.

Forming a government:
parliamentary vs. presidential system
The debate on the parliamentary versus the presidential
system of governance in the Philippines has escalated in
view of the result of the consultations and studies
conducted by the Consultative Commission created to propose
amendments and revisions to the 1987 Constitution. Their work
principally involves examining the proposals to shift from the
presidential-unitary system to a parliamentary-federal system
of government. Proponents of a parliamentary form of
government regard it as the more viable solution to solving
systemic and structural problems in Philippine governance but
critics of the parliamentary systemâ€"those who advocate for the
status quo or the presidential systemâ€"have accused the major
proponents of the shift as its main beneficiaries, thereby casting
doubt on the viability of the parliamentary system.
To change or not to change?
For a nation that has adopted a presidential system for a long
time, the parliamentary system is a foreign concept to most
Filipinos despite the fact that many of its Asian neighbors have
this form of government. With the political crisis grappling the
country, Mang Pandoy or the ordinary Filipino is now not just
confronted with rising commodity prices and diminishing income
opportunities but also has to endure lengthy debates on the kind
of political system the country has to adopt, and be on the look
out as to whether or not a political change will occur. This Issue
thus aims to provide some basic explanation of the nature of the
political systems in question, specifically distinguishing the two
forms in terms of leadership, separation of powers, and procedure
of removal from office. Hopefully, this will help more Filipinos
understand the issues better and participate more intelligently
in the debates.
Option 1. The Parliamentary System
The parliamentary system typically has clear differentiation
between the head of government and the head of state, with
the former being the Prime Minister and the latter, the President.
The Prime Minister is the chief executive and, together with
the Cabinet, exercises executive power or the authority to form
and implement policies and programs. He/she is also usually
the leader of the political party that wins the majority of votes in
the legislature or parliament, either assuming the post
automatically or gets elected by the legislature. The members of
the Cabinet are chosen by the Prime Minister from the members
of parliament and can come from the same party or from a
coalition of parties.
The head of state, meanwhile, is the President, often elected
by a designated electoral college as a figurehead with ceremonial
powers. In some cases, however, the President could take on a
more significant role during a constitutional or political crisis.
In the parliamentary system, there is fusion of powers
between the executive and the legislative branches. This union
serves to facilitate the exercise and coordination of governmental
powers and functions to formulate desired policies and implement
programs of government. The success of this fusion depends
largely, though, on the reform of the country’s political party
and electoral systems.
For some parliamentary governments, legislatures can only
amend legislation on narrow terms. There are a few permanent
or standing committees in the parliament that assist in the
drafting and review of legislation. Given its close association
with the legislative branch, the executive can be made more
accountable for its performance since they are answerable to
the members of parliament.
There are two ways by which the Prime Minister and the
rest of the Cabinet can be asked to step down. The first is through
a vote of no-confidence by the legislature often initiated by an
opposition party or coalition of opposition parties. This may or
may not result in extraordinary elections. The other route is by
virtue of a party vote, which does not force a new round of
legislative elections. The Prime Minister, as long as he/she enjoys
the confidence of the majority of the House, can dissolve the
Parliament and call for early elections.

Option 2. The Presidential System
The Philippines is one of the countries with a presidential form
of government together with South Korea, Indonesia, Nigeria,
most South American nations and the US, which is the pioneer.
Under this political system, the President is both head of state
and head of government. The incumbent for the position is elected
nationwide on timing that has been predetermined in the
Constitution. Thus, in the presidential system, the President is
said to enjoy a direct mandate from the people. There is a fixed
term of office for the President, which may be reelected depending
on the country adopting the system.
The executive branch, which the President heads, is distinct
from the legislative and judicial branches of government, which
are all independent of one other. This separation of powers serves
to check and to balance certain actuations of either branch of
government. While the members of the legislature are elected,
the members of the Cabinet are appointed by the President and
may require the confirmation or consent of the legislative branch.
The formulation, amendment and review of legislation are the
sole purview of the legislature. However, on many occasions,
the executive could endorse a legislative agenda for consideration
and veto a bill that was passed in the legislature. The latter,
nonetheless, could overturn it via a two-thirds vote.
When it comes to the difficult process of removing a
President, often the only legal way is through an impeachment
process that is undertaken in the legislative branch.
Reassessing the optionâ€"what now, Mang Pandoy?
In theory, the parliamentary and presidential forms of government
are on opposite sides of a pole. In practice, however, countries
customize their chosen system according to their needs, culture
and beliefs resulting in the so-called hybrid model. France, for
instance, is a country with a hybrid model cited as a semipresidential
system since its President is said to enjoy broader
powers than the Prime Minister.
In the present state of Philippine affairs, changing its Charter
and choosing the most appropriate form of government are of
critical undertakings in the political scenario. It becomes even
more crucial when one has to bear in mind that institutional
development and good governance are the foundations of a viable
democratic political system (whatever it may be) and sustainable
economic development. The debate is expected to persist as more
issues surface and the arguments become clearer.
An important consideration in all these is the question on
whether changing the system of governance would in itself solve
the economic and political crises. In a nation lacking in social
cohesion and suffering from public confidence, political or
economic change may simply douse the current fire but ignite a
different flame. Ultimately, the transformation from within each
Filipino translating into a more unified stance and action may
be the more essential change that should take place to lead the
country toward development and prosperity. ❋

In defining parliamentary and presidential systems of government, dictionary explanations may confuse rather than clarify, despite Mr. Webster’s all around good intentions. According to the dictionary, a parliamentary government is one in which a prime minister or premier holds office as long as he or she commands a majority in the parliament, which is the primary legislative body concerned with public affairs. The presidential system refers to the chief executive of a government, which has no prime minister.

One major difference between a parliamentary system and a presidential form of government concerns the elections process. In a presidential government, the president and members of Congress are chosen in separate elections while in a parliamentary process, one size fits all, so to speak. Also in a parliamentary system the parliament can vote a governing body out of office, while the United States Congress, except in extreme cases of impeachment, cannot. Indirectly, this signifies a weak position for the chief executive in a presidential system of government. The president is unable to dissolve government and order a new election, which a British Prime Minister is well within his or her rights to do.

Parliamentary government is always democratic although a presidential system is never parliamentary. Within the parliamentary system, both the legislature and the chief executive must be in agreement on policy, and if they aren’t, they must work at it until they are. A British prime minister is always a member of parliament but in a presidential system, the chief executive of a presidency as well as all members of the executive branch of government, except the vice president, cannot be members of Congress.

The differences between a parliamentary system of government and presidential form of government may be a bit clearer now, but they are still terms that are often misused. In a parliamentary system, the government may introduce legislation, but within a presidential system the chief executive cannot, although he is permitted to veto legislation. There is always, however, within a presidential system, a clear division between the legislative body and the government.

The decision as to whether the parliamentary or the presidential system of government is better for the people is ultimately a matter of opinion, and possibly address as well.

Should Reverend Fathers Get Married?

In 1 Corinthians 7, Paul talks about marriage.  In that same verse, he puts it clear that if you can not be like him, it is better to get married, than to mess yourself up.

I have heard several cases, home and abroad, where Reverend fathers and sisters commit untold sins, fit enough to make any pagan vow to remain in paganism. And I have asked many a times without a cogent answer as yet. Must you be a celibate, before you can serve God?  Where did did catholics get the doctrine of mandatory celibacy, for reverend fathers, even when they are conspicuously not keeping to it?

As usual, I beg for fathomable answers please.

the originator of marriage God asked his fellow creation to be fruitful and fill the earth and this can only be done when we get married and have children i mean all of Gods creation including catholic priest, there is no where in the bible that states that some people should not get married because of their responsibilities in church rather if a person should decide to stay single it is his or her choice ,so staying single because you are a priest is not biblical

It is clear that celibacy is a  man made doctrine and not biblical. In Rev. 22: 18 to 19  ...if anyone add of these  things, God will add to him the plagues. Therefore we can add human doctrine to the teachings of God.

It is so clear in 1 Timothy  3:2 ." A Bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate,sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable and able to teach.

I have less to write about RPC becuase I studied only one year in 1969. I applied for a striver but unluckily i was not accepted. I stopped schooling and went to Davao and looked for chance to continue my studies.
I can not forget the long parade of students  of RPC during the opening of  college week celebration. The college president during that time was Atty Vivtoriano Tirol Sr.,  Dr. Ferlix Lao was the dean of education, Jovita Angcog was the school registrar and Flaviana Doria was the principal of the high schol department.
My memorable experience I can't forget is our Spanish class of Mr. Butalid during the last period in the evening. Some are sleepy . Hapit na ang tanan  students "namutalid" ug katolog  sa ilang lingkuranan. Segi gihapon ug explain si Sir.

Year latter in 1970, I learned that it became UB. It is the now the most prestigious school in Bohol.

I  agree with you glacier that Roman Catholic church must be open minded at this time and that the truth will not  be hide not like in the early centuries AD. Being  a married pastor does not lessen his ability for  faithful service to God.
Quote from: glacier_71 on November 24, 2008, 09:59:35 AM
i make myself clear here. my argument is that does married state of priests inhibit/lessen his ability to provide faithful ministry to people. i say: No. Why from our experience with other  denominations and brethren of Eastern rites, there is no absolute proof of denying its possibility. Married ministers have served as effectively as non-married priests do. i'm not talking of doctrine here. it's reality.
futhermore, early leaders of the church (post-apostoic times), called "elders", were married, chosen from among the faithful to SERVE and LEAD. celibacy was not a prerequisite. to cite an example, in the Acts, the apostles laid their hands upon Stephen and 6 others to serve the Word but there was no imposition of such rule that they should not marry, or only single can be allowed to serve the "ecclesia". yet, the communities grew each day.
the theologians of the church say that celibacy is not intrinsic to the priesthood. the priesthood of Christ is not about celibacy; it is about service (to put it simply) liturgically and pastorally. it's the ministry that defines the priesthood, not his state of celibate life. that's why anyone can serve, whether ordained or not, married or celibate. "kalooy sab sa pari no. inig human sa ordinasyon, moingon dayon ang mga tawo, AY SI FATHER DI NA MAKAASAWA. ingon pod tawn tong usa ka pari, "anu ba sa tingin nyo ang pagpapari, pigil lang nang pigil?"
i am saying i don't admire priests who are faithful to their celibate life and have done their service well to their flock. i do.
it is only that with my observation and understanding of this particular issue, the Roman Catholic Church has to be more open and listen to Spirit and the signs of the times...

Look 5 Years Younger Today

I'm not interested in hopping into a time machine (return to my teen years? No thanks!), but sometimes I do wish I could turn back the clock for the sake of my skin. I grew up a devoted sun worshipper and all the running, biking and fun activities I do outdoors these days doesn't help (though now I'm better about wearing sunscreen).

The freckles and little spots I have certainly make me look older than I'd like, which is typical, according to a recent study from the University of Gottingen in Germany. Testers estimated that people whose uneven pigmentation was digitally removed from photos were five years younger than their age. When wrinkles were also erased, they guessed a 15-year age drop! Luckily, the guys in white lab coats have been hard at work finding fast, easy ways to reverse the appearance of aging without resorting to a scalpel.

Want to look younger? Try a few of these skin-saving solutions:

-- Uncover glowing skin: After washing your face for a full 30 to 60 seconds -- the time it takes cleansing agents to loosen dirt, oil and makeup -- gently apply a microdermabrasion cream (Estee Lauder Idealist Micro-D is one I like). It works like a peel to slough off surface cells and reveal newer, younger-looking skin beneath. Or try this at-home tip: Soak a washcloth in whole milk and drape it over your face. The fat in the milk soothes skin while its lactic acid gently exfoliates.

-- Get even: Blotchy pigmentation can tack on up to 12 years to your perceived age, according to a study in Evolution and Human Behavior. Roll back the years with tinted moisturizer, which hides imperfections but still appears natural (so you look like you, not some fake Claymation version). Apply your regular moisturizer first so the tint won't seep into dry spots, resulting in splotches.

-- Cover spots: To hide imperfections, choose a thick stick concealer one shade lighter than your foundation. For a natural effect, dab it on with a makeup brush, then top it with a light dusting of translucent powder to keep it in place.

-- Freshen up your fragrance: Choosing the right scent could take years off your face, reports the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago. In a study, men guessed women's ages while smelling three scents and judged women to be nearly six years younger when wearing a perfume with notes of pink grapefruit.

Inspiration & Hope / Re: Why God allows suffering?

Re: suffering: why do we suffer?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Trinity is an eternal process of the three Persons giving Themselves over to one another in an exchange of Love.

Suffering teaches us how to love.

When we act for others out of love, we are going to suffer. When we voluntarily suffer--when we perform penances and self-mortifications--we condition ourselves to suffer. We pray that we can take upon ourselves the sufferng that others are undergoing.

This physically and spiritually conditions us to be more self-sacrficiing. When we undergo illnesses and harship in our lives, and we learn to accept these trials, we learn to be more selfless. Again, the main reason we see these things as "problems" is that we are sinful and self-centered. Enduring these trials teaches us humility.

THen, when it comes to actualy giving of ourselves in love to others--whether in marriage, religious life, the priesthood, charitable works, our careers, etc.--we will be *more* giving and *more* generous because we are willing to accept the suffering that comes from being generous.

Too many people go around thinking that Christianity is somehow supposed to be about "happiness," that, "If you just believe in Jesus, He'll take away all your problems."

You can read all the encyclicals and apologetics you want to, but it ain't gonna solve the real issue.

A good novel or poem will do a lot better for you than a theological treatise (I recommend C. S. Lewis's _Till We Have Faces_, and just about anything by T. S. Eliot).

If you really want to understand suffering, study the lives and spirituality of the Saints.

Pray the Stations of the Cross without the cop-out "fifteenth station". Pray the fifteen prayers of St. Bridget of Sweden.

Read _The Story of a Soul_ and _Fatima: In Lucia's Own Words_.

Practice the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.

And, most of all, *do it* . Start practicing fasting and self-mortification. When you're stuck in traffic, instead of cussing people out, offer it up.
When you break a dish, offer it up.

I once said to my father, "Dad, when I golf, I pray, then I swing. When you golf, you do just the opposite."

When you swing at your metaphorical golf ball and miss, don't swear; stop and think about how maybe you didn't take your action virtuously or prayerfully enough, and ask God's forgiveness.

"Do small things with great love."

*This* will teach you about suffering.

Re: suffering: why do we suffer?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, first, my personal belief is that part of the Redemption is that Jesus taught us *how* to suffer. The proper Catholic response to suffering is to say, "Jesus endured far worse than this, and He didn't deserve it. I deserve to suffer for all eternity in Hell for my sins, so I should embrace this. Jesus, I offer up my sufferings with your sacrifice on the Cross."

When we talk about "suffering", we must remember that "suffering" is an emotional state. We "suffer" from many things, and it is important to distinguish those causes.

1) Suffering we receive from others' sins and cruelty. This is obviously a consequence of original sin. It is what Socrates refers to when he says, "It is better to suffer wrong than to do it." This would not exist without original sin, but even those without original sin--Jesus and Mary--experience it.

2) Suffering from physical illness, deformity, etc. Regardless of whether illnesses or deformities *existed* in an unfallen world, it is very clear that they would not have caused *suffering*. Why? Our suffering from these problems is directly proportionate to our own selfishness.

I've written more elaborately on these distinctions in the past (in my master's thesis, for example), but can't think offhand of what I formulated.

But I've always wanted to write a book called, "The Divine Practical Joke": we suffer because God finds it funny.

No matter what we complain about in this life, it is *nothing* compared to Heaven or Hell. No matter how bad things are here, for a short time, the Beatific Vision would wipe it away for ages of ages. On the other hand, if we end up in Hell, the sufferings there are far worse than the worst we experience here. In either case, complaining about suffering in this life is rather silly.

The fact that we suffer-that we have this selfish, "woe is me" reaction to inconvenience--is a consequence of original sin. But suffering itself, properly embraced, is the cure of original sin.

Make sure you are putting food for healthy skin on your plate? What food are
for  healthy skin? Ang gulay.... makulay ang buhay kung may gulay.

Font SizeA A A Foods for Healthy Skin: You Are What You Eat
What you put on your plate is even more important than what you put on your skin.
By Colette Bouchez
WebMD FeatureReviewed by Charlotte E. Grayson Mathis, MDWant truly fabulous skin -- glowing, vibrant, and, yes, younger-looking skin? Make sure you're putting foods for healthy skin on your plate.

"Everything you eat becomes a part of not only your inner being, but the outer fabric of your body as well. The healthier the foods are that you consume, the better your skin will look," says Samantha Heller, MS, RD, a clinical nutritionist at NYU Medical Center in New York City.

The reverse is true as well, Heller tells WebMD. The less attention we pay to what goes in our mouth, the more problems we may see cropping up with our skin.

"You could have sallow skin, dry skin, older-looking skin. It's not going to happen overnight, but starve your skin long enough, and it's going to show," she says.

What's more, some health experts believe that when your diet is missing certain foods for healthy skin, other, even more serious skin problems can result.

Elaine Linker, PhD, biochemist and co-founder of DDF Skin Care, says a number of conditions, such as acne, can cause you to suddenly break out. And some chronic skin conditions, such as eczema, may be linked to diet.

What Are Foods for Healthy Skin?
Most experts say eating a balanced diet is the best way to get your share of good food for healthy skin. Still, a number of specific skin treats are more likely than others to give a boost of glowing good health to your complexion. Here's what experts told WebMD are the most important:

Low-Fat Dairy Products. One the most important components of skin health is vitamin A. One of the best places to get it is low-fat dairy products. In fact, experts say that the health of our skin cells is dependent on dietary vitamin A.

Nutrition expert Liz Lipski, PhD, CCN, says it's doubly important to eat A-rich dairy foods if you have either diabetes or a thyroid condition.

"Many people who have these problems can't convert the beta carotene to vitamin A, which is the form found in many foods that we normally associate with this vitamin, such as carrots," says Lipski, the founder and Director of InnovativeHealing.com and the author of Digestive Wellness.

The A in dairy products, she says is "true A," so everyone's skin can use it.

Lipski says low-fat yogurt is not only high in vitamin A, but also acidophilus, the "live" bacteria that is good for intestinal health. Turns out, it may also have an impact on the skin.

"Anything that helps keep digestion normal, any live bacteria or enzymes, is also going to be reflected in healthy-looking skin," says Lipski.

BISHOPS, ELDERS AND DEACONS MUST BE HUSBANDS OF ONE WIFE

If deacons, elders and bishops from non Catholic churches can be a husband of one wife, why priests
are not allowed to be husbands  of one wife? This is Biblical.

The Bible says in 1Timothy 3:2 that bishops and elders should be "husband of one wife". So we see that monogamy is a holier way and spiritual leaders should be exemplary in this. Polygamy thus is the permissive and not the perfect will of God.

Taken that the translation of the passage regarding bishops, elders and deacons having only one wife is right, it does imply that it is acceptable in the scriptures for other men in the congregation to be polygamous. When something is not the perfect will of God for a particular person, but it is also not sinful and thus permitted by God, it becomes the permissive will of God. God will never accept anything sinful to be permissible. Thus if something is permissible, it cannot be sinful. Polygamy thus cannot be considered sinful. Just like monogamy and celibacy, polygamy may be God's permissive will for some while it may be the perfect will of God for others. Each will have to seek God for what is specific for his life. If polygamy is sinful, then the Bible would, as with other sins, have constantly admonish and remind all men to be strictly monogamous, but the warning against polygamy is never addressed anywhere in the Scriptures.

Now, further examination of the contextual understanding of this verse tells us that the instructions given in this particular passage were very cultural in context. Paul, in the same epistle, said in 1Tim 2:9-12 that women should not have braided hair or be adorned with gold, pearls nor costly clothing. He also said that women are not permitted to teach. We see that these are all acceptable today and even much more. Today, we have God-anointed, God-vindicated women teachers, senior pastors, prophets, missionaries and renowned preachers. This passage was a part of Paul’s personal letter to advise the young minister Timothy, his protege and pastor who was faced with all sorts of pressures, conflicts, and challenges from the church and the surrounding culture. The emphasis of the passage was a guideline, not strict qualifications for the appointment of faithful and responsible leaders who should be capable of running their own household well. He also said that their children must be in submission with all reverence. We cannot penalize a spiritual man of service just because he has delinquent children. Samuel had children who took bribes, but God did not disqualify him from service. It was evil men who took occasion to fault him. Moreover, if one is to stick to the "non-compromising" stand of husband of one wife, then he should also disqualify the countless anointed male pastors who are single, whether still unmarried or widowed or divorced and all female pastors. Even Apostle Paul would be disqualified.

I would venture to emphasize that we would have to use the instructions as a guide only. Rigid adherence to this entire passage without using an intelligent discernment of cultural and contextual application can be disastrous. It would mean:

Women are not allowed to have hair-dos nor wear gold, pearl or costly clothing, and if they so do, they would have to be considered improper.
Countless anointed women who are called to be pastors, teachers and leaders would have to be taken down from serving God.
Even unmarried single men would have to be removed from the position of a pastor, elder or deacon. Even Jesus, and perhaps Paul and some apostles would not be qualified.
Also, a man who has problematic children would be disqualified, so would the prophet Samuel if he lives today.
If a person is not actively hospitable, he would also be disqualified.
If he does not have a good standing with the world because he had committed some crimes before, he also stands no chance at all.
If they have  wives that seem problematic or are not considered by others to be virtuous enough, they would also be disqualified.
We know that hardly anybody stands a chance to be an overseer or elder of a church if we put him through this laundry check-list. What about other qualifications like sound theological degrees and good social etiquette? Has Paul forgotten them? I also wonder if Paul's outward disposition is gentle enough for the job. So we realize that the items on the check-list only serve as a guide, which also means that the "husband of one wife" is not to be taken as a rigid instruction but a guide to measure one's availability and capacity, especially when one was not raised in the Jewish ways of patriarchy and house management. If this instruction is to be adhered to rigidly, then the rest of the qualifications must be rigidly fulfilled too, implying that countless pastors and elders are not acceptable before God.

Also interestingly, this "strictly monogamy" line of interpretation would also mean that great leaders like Moses, David and Abraham are all going to be disqualified from ruling with Christ. One may contend that they would then be neither male nor female. But they can never erase the fact that their lives were polygamous when God qualified them as leaders and exemplars, and into eternity they still acknowledge their wives. When Jesus said that they would be neither male nor female in the resurrection, He merely meant that they no longer have sexual relationships - a good answer to the trick questions of the doubting Pharisees. It's not that they would not recognize or disown their wives. If a monogamist would acknowledge his wife, so would a polygamist. So a continual polygamous relationship if deemed sinful would imply a sin that goes into eternity. We would have to first answer the question as to whether Abraham and David and their multiple wives would be in Heaven. The answer of course is YES. Thus it is clear that the enforcement of strict monogamy on leaders of the church is inconsistent with the ways of the unchanging God. It is definitely out.

Yet there is more than meets the eye. The word "one" (Strong No. 3391) has been translated elsewhere also as "first". We see this same instructional guideline repeated in Titus 1:6, where the same word "one" is translated as "first" in Titus 3:10 to reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition. This same word "mia" in Greek is also translated in several other places in the New Testament as "first" rather than "one", for example "first day of the week" in John 20:1. Easterners like the Chinese still call the "first day of the week" also as "number one day of the week". Thus, it is also possible to translate the passages of 1Tim 3:2 and Titus 1:6 as saying that bishops and elders should be a blameless, "first wife husband" who is capable of taking care of his household. This means that he should be capable of keeping his first wife and managing his children well, which means that he can be polygamous. This flows well with the teaching of Christ about divorce and also with the verses in Malachi 3:15,16 that say God is against one who deals treacherously with the wife of his youth (forsaking first wife) and that he hates divorce. God is not against addition and added responsibility. He is against subtraction and irresponsibility. Since polygamy is in order, many divorcees including ministers should attempt to bring back their first wives and love them. I am not in any way saying that because of "first wife husband", all bishops and elders must be polygamous. But rather, because the word "mia" can be translated as "one" and "first", this verse cannot be used to support the proposition that bishops and elders must be monogamous, not forgetting the cultural and contextual "guidance" aspect of the instructions. There is simply no ground against leaders being polygamous in these pastoral passages. No way. Also, in 1Tim 5:9, the specific numeric "one" is used in application to "wife of one husband" (Strong No. 1520). Why wouldn't the same author of the same epistle use the same word if he had meant a same absolute numerical "one" in both cases? The answer is obvious, the meaning of "first wife" as in the case of elders and bishops and the numerical "one husband" as in the latter case of the same epistle.

There has been further contention (as would always be) that according to some 'authoritative' resources, the word "mia" in Greek language is to be correctly translated as "one", referring to a number because the word for sequential order ("first") of things and persons is the word "protos". Thus it means that the people in the congregation can be polygamous while pastors, bishops and deacons should be monogamous. For this I have 4 comments:

1. For all I know, the sources of such Greek "experts" were basically materials written by western Christians who made specific reference to this verse in their linguistic works. Thus we cannot discount the fact that such authorities may still be bias.

2. In the present time when God is using a royal priesthood where leadership and influence are not confined to bishops, pastors and deacons alone, making such a guide into a Law for just these 3 categories of leaders would be inappropriate. Also, where is it in the epistles that says the lifestyle of a spiritual leader should be religiously or naturally different from others believers? Anything that is inappropriate for the leaders would also be inappropriate for the others. This pattern is consistent throughout the NT of royal priesthood. God in His sovereign will, shifted the priesthood to include the laity and the line which separates them from the clergy is fast disappearing. We know there are those "ordinary" members of the congregation who are doing much more ministry than the clergy, influencing and leading the people as never before. So where then do we draw the line as to who should be polygamous and who should not be?

3. Leaders are supposed to be examples and imposing monogamy on them violates the overall context of the Word, watering down its timeless value and application, undermining the spirituality of the Patriarchs and making those who are polygamous, second class and unspiritual. Thus taking such line of interpretation that it's a must for leaders to be monogamous also means that polygamy is Biblically discriminated against.

4. It also means that a member who is polygamous would have to put away his other wives or wait for them to leave him or die, otherwise he is condemned to be only a follower and a member in the church, no matter how well he runs his family or how anointed he becomes. There is no more hope for him to advance in God's Kingdom.  It seems he can polygamous while he is a younger believer and a ordinary member of the congregation, yet he is condemned by this same scriptural right and be barred from becoming an spiritual leader as he advances in the Lord. This is absolutely ridiculous! God is not like that. This line of theology condemns polygamous people to be unspiritual followers.

Despite all theological and technical exposition regarding this word "mia, to those who are still insistent on a being erroneously religious about being "a husband of one wife" I would like to tell them that a guideline is to be precisely a guide, not a Law. What Paul wrote was contextually a guide (taken that "mia" must mean "one", which is proven wrong) for the new church at that time, not always. Even so, the Law is for man and not man for the Law. We must be careful lest we be like the Jews, who fell into legalistically and ritualistically living out the Law and not the spirit of the Law. As what Martin Luther said, "Learn from me, how difficult a thing it is to throw off errors confirmed by the example of all the world, and which, through long habit, have become a second nature to us."

Further technical reading of the word "mia":

Possibly there will be cha cha before 2010. The congress is pro arroyo headed by
Prospero Nograles and the senate president is just recently replaced by a pro
arroyo, Senate president Enrile. They will convence for a constituent assembly
to change the charter and not through a plebiscite.

Arroyo want to prolong her term after 2010. She is the greatest president we ever
had.

Congress has started for cha cha and gathered 185 signatures who are in favor.

If it is done through constituent assembly no need for referendum. Surely it will
be approved by the Supreme Court because arroyo appointed new judges who
are pro to her.

Why Some People Will Remain Single
Posted: 10/4/2006 10:45:58 AM
Well, I've been on this site now for about 2 1/2 months & I will soon be deleting my profile. I will, however, give a few pointers for those that 'wonder' why they can't get a decent women (this can apply to women also), even if they are decent guys & for all of the others in-between:

1) Learn to spell.....it's a mighty BIG TURN-OFF when a lot of men on this site can't even spell simple words. Use a dictionary if necessary - that's what I used in school & afterwards when I did not know how to spell certain words.

2) Say 'something' in your profile. It's a turn-off when men say they 'don't know what to say' or they hardly put anything (sometimes 'nothing') in their profile. At the very LEAST, put what you like to do (hobbies, sports), what kind of woman you desire, etc. It's really not that difficult.

3) If you don't know what kind of woman is 'right' for you - good luck, because you NEED to know this to avoid the 'bad' ones out there or the ones that are just not right for you. Why waste your time and everyone else's? KNOW what you need and want. I do....that's why I'm more selective than a lot of people....but look at how many are NOT in good relationships!

4) If you are NOT good-looking, then don't expect to get a good-looking woman. Yes, looks do matter & I've noticed that the ones that say looks don't matter are USUALLY those who are NOT good-looking. They are also the ones who complain, get perturbed, disgusted, angry, etc. when us good-looking women WANT a good-looking guy. It's human nature to want better IF YOU CAN GET BETTER. If I wasn't good-looking, then I wouldn't expect to get a good-looking guy. So don't get on your high horse just because some women, like me, put a higher priority on looks. There certainly are other requirements in order to me to choose a steady partner, but I HAVE to be attracted to him first & foremost.

5) For those of you who are overweight (more than 10 lbs of your ideal weight) then I suggest you cut down on your calories & EXERCISE. Otherwise, do NOT expect to get much luck on this site (or others). Not too many people want someone overweight. However, overweight people can expect to get others like themselves. A lot of men want a good-looking, slim women - well, we want the same thing in a man!!!! (At least the majority of us do).

So those are my tips. I don't particularly like this site. I've only met (in person) a few guys and I did speak to a few others. One guy 'pretended' to want a relationship but after 'writing' a few times, I KNEW he just wanted sex. Just be honest folks.....there's nothing wrong in just wanting sex or whatever....as long as you're totally honest about everything. I personally lose a lot of respect when someone lies. If you have enough self-esteem, then you shouldn't have to lie. Also, some men on this site THINK they're so HOT in the looks department, but they're not. I read a book recently that said men usually exaggerate their looks & woman do the opposite. Interesting, isn't it? I've met a couple of good guys on this site (one was especially good, kind, etc.) but he was overweight & I just was NOT AT ALL attracted to him in a physical/sexual way. I was sad about that....but I can't control what I'm attracted to (or not).

So that's it folks for me....good luck to the rest of you. I hope some people on this site are meeting & dating & perhaps even hooking up permanently. It's sad that so many of us are single. I wish, for all of us, that it just wasn't so difficult to meet someone compatible, in the most important areas at least.

hi cute,
I agree with your opinions mostly, however it's just not that simple! I consider myself a good looking guy,I'm honest, reliable, funny, educated and responsible. However I'm also 43yrs old/w no kids.Sometimes women think there is something wrong w/that alone.Just circumstance and no more.I also shave my head-the alternative is much worse and it looks good/some women hate it,some love it!I've got some tattoos, some love it /hate it.I guess my point is everybody likes something different.Me personally I am only attracted to petite women as I am quite fit and have a nice body for my age(no I don't look 25)but I wouldn't be embarassed to take my shirt off at the beach...........I feel like a good catch and still deal w/plenty of rejection! It's part of the process and when I do find THE one I will not under estimate the value of what has happened and never take it for granted simply because although the process can be fun,it can also be frustrating, time consuming and difficult!that's what makes that special person SPECIAL!

simple guide to how to avoid becoming overweight or obese
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Obesity is a growing problem in adults and children which can reduce your life expectancy. It can create serious health problems and means you are at greater risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.

Two simple ways that you can prevent this for both yourself and your family are:-
• Keep physically active
• Eat health regular meals

What are the causes?
Obesity is caused by imbalance â€" when you cannot burn off the amount of energy taken into the body as calories in food through your physical activity.

Tips on keeping active:

The recommended levels of exercise are:-
• For adults; at  least 30 minutes moderate activity five times a week
• For children; at least an hour a day of moderate activity.

This can be any activity which makes you warm, slightly out of breath but allows you to still be able to talk.

Try to make it fun and part of your regular day, for example,  walking to school, playing outside, dancing, gardening, cycling etc.

Start slowly and build up bit by bit.

If you have been inactive for a long time or have health problems, speak to your GP or health worker before you start your regime.

Tips on healthy eating
• Have regular meals and  enjoy your food
• No food is taboo but you need a balance of  different food (fruit and vegetables, protein, starch and fibre foods, milk and dairy products)
• Avoid a lot of food which is high in fat and sugar, for example, chips, sugary drinks, sweets, crisps, pies etc
• Have five portions of fruit and vegetables a day
• If you drink alcohol do so in moderation
• For adults; keep your Body Mass Index under 30 (weight in kilograms divided by metres squared). You can ask your GP or health worker for more details about this.

If you need any further advice speak to your GP or health worker or visit some of the websites below.

Here in  Digos City, I tried planting  the new  ube variety  that climbs like
ampalaya. The taste is quite good but it does not grow as big as the native
ube we have.

This variety of ube did not attract farmers to plant.

I do believe that Arroyo is not involved in this scam. The money were given to
congressmen for assistance to farmers. The problem is that  it did not reach
to the farmers.

Why? because it was given 30 days before  presidential election in 2004.

Because of the water system we have now , water is so abundance. We can take
a bathe everyday. During the olden times, my lolo takes a bath once a week because
the well is so far. He lacks sanitation but he lived up to 85 years old. Karon daghang
nangamatay sa subra ug kaligo. Inig kahapon dili siya manghimasa kay makapasmo
sa tiil. Karon nga panahon, ang nagsigi ug himasa mahapon, gi arthritis  man.

I formed  the habit of taking a bath everyday.  How will I take a bath to prolong life?
