Fashion Trend / Re: Bias against bald people
March 22, 2012, 08:38:17 PM
The 20th century’s youth-obsessed culture viewed baldness as old age incarnate, and fueled a billion dollar hair care and restoration industry. Actors Burt Reynolds and Sean Connery obsessed over their hairpieces, and Larry Hagman rotated several toupees each month to simulate normal hair growth. Premature baldness in teen boys and hair loss for women were taken as social catastrophes, and cause for profound depression. Worse, thoughtless bald jokes were considered an entirely acceptable form of humor. It’s also telling that Americans haven’t elected a balding presidential candidate since Eisenhower, in the 1950s. Bald men also confess that dating from the 1960s-1980s was particularly brutal.

But, there is hope. In the late nineties, white men copied African American style (imagine that) and began shaving their heads. It took some time, but now there are plenty of bald film stars like Bruce Willis, Vin Diesel, and Patrick Stewart, not to mention sports icons Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neill. Bald is so cool now that men who aren’t bald buzz their hair so short they might as well be (Wayne Rooney, Jason Statham, Tyler Perry, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson).

So bald men can be sexy now. Bald women, however, are still at the ‘extreme fashion choice’ stage. They still get treated differently, even by other women (who often ask about their health). But Demi Moore (GI Jane) and Sigourney Weaver (Aliens III) have made successful films with shorn scalps, and Sinead O’Connor was bald for her entire singing career. And they were plenty sexy.

We could be going faster, but we’re headed (groan) in the right direction. Think about it â€" when was the last time you heard a new bald joke? -- http://listverse.com/

Fashion Trend / Bias against bald people
March 22, 2012, 08:37:30 PM

Bias against bald people started early. Ovid in AD 1 said “Ugly are hornless bulls, a field without grass is an eyesore/So is a tree without leaves, so is a head without hair”. Scheherazade asks “Is there anything more ugly in the world than a man … bald as an artichoke?” Historians say Caesar used laurel leaves to hide male pattern baldness, and the Bible in Corinthians 11:15 says a woman’s long hair is her glory. In the 19th century, baldness for men meant wearing a wig if they were to have any kind of public or professional life.

Her job didn’t physically require a slender person, so legally there was no reasonable basis for her weight loss orders, but the boss said that Ms. Howell’s weight indicated her life was “out of control” and so she was “too fat too counsel students”. The school offered no help, apart from telling her to lose weight.

Health and Food / Weight Discrimination
March 22, 2012, 08:02:49 PM

Obesity is a serious medical problem, and people who suffer from it need to achieve a healthy weight and maintain safe diet habits. But while getting healthier, obese people still deserve the same level of (in)dignity that everyone else gets these days.

That’s not happening. According to the International Journal of Obesity, reports of weight discrimination are increasing. Their research surveyed 2,000 U.S. adults in 1995-96 and again in 2004-06, comparing weight discrimination rates relative to other forms of discrimination. The results were alarming. 17% of men and 9% of women reported race discrimination, while among severely obese people, 28% of men and a shocking 45% of women said they have experienced discrimination because of their weight.

Institutional discrimination centered on health care, education or workplace situations, such as cases in which people said they were fired, or denied jobs and promotions because of their weight. Interpersonal discrimination occurred mainly via insults, abuse and harassment. There are currently no federal laws in the US for discrimination based on weight, and arguing weight discrimination as violating the Americans with Disabilities Act is debatable, since the ‘disability’ in question is â€" in some cases â€" reversible, and a product of individual behavior.

Adding a face to this debate was Peggy Howell (above), a librarian at a Northern California religious school. She weighed 280 lbs. and was directed by her employer to lose weight or be fired. Her job didn’t physically require a slender person, so legally there was no reasonable basis for her weight loss orders, but the boss said that Ms. Howell’s weight indicated her life was “out of control” and so she was “too fat too counsel students”. The school offered no help, apart from telling her to lose weight.

Feeling she had no choice, Howell lost 120 lbs. at Weight Watchers, and promptly quit her job a year and a half later. She then worked for a marketing company, and later as a bartender, standing on her feet all day and performing more physical exertion than she ever had as a librarian. Ms. Howell is now retired, but still supports the National Association for the Advancement of Fat Acceptance, which works with government to assure equal treatment for citizens of different sizes.

Las Vegas Assemblyman Richard Segerblom cites Ms. Howell’s case as an example of weight discrimination, and says that if nothing else, people should stop discrimination based on physical size for financial reasons. “Taxpayers pay for it if these people can’t get jobs, or good-paying jobs, and have to get unemployment, welfare or other benefits”. To this end, he proposed Assembly Bill 90, which would have outlawed discrimination in the state of Nevada based on physical characteristics such as weight and height. The bill died in committee. -- http://listverse.com/

(/EIM) (BANAT)

COCKTALES: Noynoying - fact or mischievous spin?
21-Mar-12, 3:20 PM | Victor C. Agustin

With no less than the Asian Wall Street Journal having picked up the Noynoying propaganda chatter against PNoy, Cocktales did a quick fact-check if the country's chief executive had indeed been loafing around as his detractors paint him to be.

First, let us assume that the President of the Philippines is expected to work Mondays to Fridays only, just like any government employee.

Next, we give PNoy credit for holding public engagements on weekends and holidays, when the rest of government salarymen are taking it easy.

What do the available public records show?

For the first week of January, PNoy just like many Filipinos seemed to have trouble shaking off the holiday bug, having taken no official or public engagement on the first and even the third working day of the year.

Before the long Yuletide-New Year break, PNoy was last seen publicly on December 23, when he attended the traditional Christmas welcome for returning workers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

The holiday mode was broken the first Sunday of the year, when, if you may recall, PNoy and a number of grim-looking Cabinet members held a hastily-arranged press conference to warn about a possible terrorist attack (that thankfully did not happen) on the Black Nazarene procession the following day.

Other than that, PNoy had, as government-speak have it, "private time" for the rest of the Saturdays and Sundays of the first month of the year. Likewise, he did not have any public engagement on January 23, a Monday.

The leap month of February began with PNoy absenting himself from any public engagement on the second day, a Thursday, as well as on Valentine's Day.

The bachelor president did, however, make up for the February 14 absence by appearing on the first Saturday at the Villamor air base for the Family Rosary Crusade, and following week's Sunday by flying to Aurora province. He also had a series of Edsa 1 events on February 25, a Saturday.

The first week of March started off with PNoy missing even from the friendly Malacanang reporters on March 7 and 8, right after ringing the opening bell at the Philippine Stock Exchange to mark the bourse's record climb.

The President then went on a stealth mode beginning Saturday until Thursday, March 16, when the Palace issued a single photo release showing P.Noy on his desk going over some documents.

The Malacañang explanation was that the chief executive had not been feeling well, apparently for days already, thus missing even an appointment long set up by his key financial booster, Ramon del Rosario of the Phinma Group.

In any case, the President seemed to have felt much better that weekend that he helicoptered up to Baguio to attend the annual PMA graduation rites.

Unfortunately, Monday, he was again missing in action.

NOYNOYING: The reason why the term “Noynoying” has caught on and even landed in international media is because it is true, very descriptive, and widely applicable to non-performing public officials.

Even if pressure were to be applied on such Internet sites as Wikipedia to delete the entry, the new word coined by Filipino street protesters will stay. It has taken root, thanks to Noynoy Aquino himself.

The term has been given various meanings, all related. To many of us, it simply means for someone expected to act on a problem to just sit there and do nothing.

Malacañang may want to adopt as slogan the Spanish line: “¡Qué dulce es no hacer nada y descansar después!” (How sweet it is to do nothing and to rest afterwards!)

Ines Mazziotti, who represents one of the suspects, said that her client's acts were not homicides but rather "mercy" killings intended to put desperately ill patients out of their misery.

"After 20 years in intensive care, of constant stress on the edge of life and death, he could not take it anymore," Mazziotti said.

Rosas was unimpressed. "For us this is criminal conduct," he said. "The pity hypothesis collapses" after a patient that was being released died after receiving an injection, he said.

The case became known to authorities in January following a tip from "private sources." Authorities stepped up their investigation following the suspicious death of a female patient last week.

Vomero told reporters on Sunday that the alleged killers used different methods to end the lives of their patients.

In one case "the suspect introduced morphine directly into the blood stream," Vomero said, while in the other, "they pumped air into the blood stream, which resulted in deaths in just a few minutes."

The staff at Hospital Maciel, in historic downtown Montevideo, was trying to come to terms with having worked for years with one of the alleged killers.

"There is no doubt that his job performance was mediocre, he was bad with the patients and ... many of us distrusted him," a female nurse at the hospital told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"Anyone able to do this does not deserve to be called a human," she sobbed. -- http://ph.news.yahoo.com/

Prosecutors said they received more reports of suspicious deaths after two male nurses admitted over the weekend to killing 16 patients at two hospitals in Uruguay.

Officials would not say how many deaths are under review, but have said that one of the suspects admitted killing 11 patients, and the other five.

The daily El Pais reported that the death toll could exceed 50.

"More complaints are arriving and we will be working specifically on them," to determine if there were more victims, said Angel Rosas, a federal official leading the investigation.

Police arrested the two male nurses on Sunday and charged them with murdering patients at a private Neurological Intensive Care Center and a public hospital's intermediate-level care unit.

The names of the suspects have not been released, but the El Observador newspaper identified them as Ariel Acevedo, 46, and Marcelo Pereira, 40.

The men confessed to the killings, telling investigators "they didn't like seeing people suffer," said Rolando Vomero, the judge overseeing the investigation.

One of the men's girlfriend, who also is a nurse, was arrested and charged with covering up information in the case.

Health Minister Jorge Venegas described the suspects as "serial killers," and promised far-reaching inspections of both private and public medical facilities, in consultation with the World Health Organization.

Venegas also said he would open a confidential hotline for tipsters to report suspected abuse, and a telephone counseling service to help those emotionally burdened by the scandal, unprecedented in this nation of three million.

It was "painful and disgusting" to contemplate "the presence of murderers" within the country's healthcare industry, said Deputy Health Minister Leonel Briozzo.

"There was no error here," Briozzo said. "There was intent to kill."

It looks like someone won't be invited to the White House any time soon. While hosting a benefit for President Barack Obama's reelection campaign in New York City on Monday night, Robert De Niro made a racial joke while introducing First Lady Michelle Obama. "Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney," the Oscar-winning actor began in front of an audience that included Beyonce, Whoopi Goldberg, and Harvey Weinstein. "Now do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?"

Almost immediately, White House aides scrambled to make it clear that De Niro's comment "was inappropriate," said the First Lady's Campaign Press Secretary, Olivia Alair. Realizing his gaffe, the 68-year-old also publicly vetoed his "joke." In a statement to E! News on Tuesday, De Niro apologized, saying, "My remarks, although spoken with satirical jest, were not meant to offend or embarrass anyone, especially the first lady."

But the damage was already done. As expected, Obama's Republican rivals came out swinging in defense of their better halves â€" and for the "Meet the Fockers" star's racial remarks. "I do want to say one thing, both on behalf of my wife and on behalf of Karen Santorum and on behalf of Ann Romney, I think that Robert De Niro's wrong," said Newt Gingrich from the campaign trail. "I think the country is ready for a new first lady, and he doesn't have to describe it in racial terms." As for Rick Santorum, he merely dismissed De Niro's joke as nonsense coming from a Hollywood actor "spouting off as they do. The idea of looking at politics through eyes of race should be over … I don't know where he thinks he's coming from."

Gingrich, not satisfied with De Niro's apology and the First Lady's condemnation of the remark, is now also calling for the President himself to offer a mea culpa on behalf of the actor. "It was at an Obama fundraiser," added Gingrich. "It is exactly wrong, it divides the country." -- http://omg.yahoo.com/

Sweet, as he came to be called, is just one among the thousands of dogs that ends up in one of the many illegal slaughterhouses in Baguio each week.  He was found cowering in a corner of a very cramped cage along with several other dogs without food and water.  Earlier, 40 other dogs were brutally slaughtered in front of him, their heads smashed with a wooden club.

Slaughtering them is bad enough; the manner is nothing short of barbaric.
