Early morning workouts

While a daily workout is great for your health, studies suggest that getting up for early morning exercise may not be as ideal as it seems. A study by a researcher from Brunel University, Middlesex, found that heavy training sessions early in the morning can compromise the immune system and put athletes at increased risk of bacterial and viral infection. While a morning jog or gentle exercise session is unlikely to put you at risk, it may be better to save heavier workouts for later in the day.

Sipping on mocktails

You may think that by swapping cocktails for mocktails you are doing your health a favour, but this may not actually be the case. While cutting down on alcohol is beneficial for your wellbeing, mocktails are often high in refined sugar which research suggests is just as damaging and addictive as alcohol. For a safer swap and a shot of nutrients, make sure you stick to mocktails made from pure fruit juices instead of those made from syrups.

Talking over your problems

Talking through your problems can be a great way to gain some perspective and get things off your chest. However, studies have suggested that, after a certain point, rehashing and dwelling on problems can actually be bad for your health. According to research, revisiting and analyzing the same problems with friends (“co-rumination”) can lead to anxiety, stress disorders and depression. Next time a problem arises, by all means talk it over with a friend, but try to focus on problem-solving rather than simply dwelling on the issue.

Drinking water

While we are probably all familiar with the advice to drink eight glasses of water a day, more recent research has suggested that there is actually no scientific evidence supporting this recommendation and that drinking excessive amounts of water can actually be dangerous by lowering the concentration of salt in your blood. Health-conscious water drinkers should also be wary of the trend for drinking bottled water, as studies have suggested that the chemicals (phthalates) from plastic bottles can leach into water and disrupt hormone levels.

The gospel today places us at a turning point in the scriptures â€" as Jesus confronts the looming reality of his own death.

If you have ever been close to someone facing that reality, it can be harrowing â€" and heartbreaking. I experienced that with both my parents. Different people face death in different ways, sometimes with anger, sometimes with denial or despair. One of the most remarkable â€" and to me, most inspiring â€" was the story of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin.

He was cardinal archbishop of Chicago in the ‘80s and ‘90s. In 1995, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The following year, Cardinal Bernardin set out to tell his story â€" what he called “the final miles of my life’s journey” â€" in a book called “The Gift of Peace.” He completed the book in November of 1996, describing how he was finishing the manuscript in the fall while knowing that he would not live to see the spring. Indeed, he died just 13 days after the book was done.

“The Gift of Peace” is a beautiful meditation about life â€" but also about the end of life. It is about facing that end with faith and with grace. Cardinal Bernardin considered his final illness a kind of gift from God â€" the “gift of peace” that gave the book its title. It’s a gift that also endowed his last days with clarity and, he wrote, a sense of freedom.

“When we are at peace,” the cardinal wrote, “we find the freedom to be most fully who we are, even in the worst of times. We let go of what is nonessential and embrace what is essential. We empty ourselves so that God may more fully work within us. We become instruments in the hands of the Lord.” Fittingly, he titled the last chapter of his book, “The Cross Comes Into Clear View.”

Well, I think those six words could also serve as a title for this Sunday’s gospel.

In this reading from John, Jesus confronts the same painful truth that Cardinal Bernardin confronted â€" and that all of us face: the certainty of death. Our time is finite. In the gospel, Christ’s earthly life is ending. His hour is at hand. He looks toward his future, the coming days, and sees before him Calvary. The cross has “come into clear view.”

For Jesus, this is a moment of anticipation â€" and anxiety. In a profound and deeply personal way, the gospel shows us the human dimension of our savior. The man who walked on water and gave sight to the blind shows an unexpected vulnerability. “I am troubled now,” he says. I imagine he’s not only troubled about what he would experience â€" the pain, the humiliation, and struggle he would endure â€" but also, I think, troubled for his followers. His friends, his family. He’s troubled for all those who will find themselves â€" after he’s gone â€" suddenly alone.

Later in John’s gospel, Jesus would reassure them, “I will not leave you orphans.” Here, too, he offers reassurance. “Where I am, there also will my servant be,” he says. “The Father will honor whoever serves me.”

Again and again, he tells us: this will be hard, but take comfort. You are not alone.

And then beautifully, in the middle of confronting the closeness of his own death, Jesus sees life. A grain of wheat, he says, has to die before it can bear fruit.

If you want to know what sort of fruit it bears, just look around you this morning. We are part of it. The church throughout the world is a part of it. From that grain of wheat, there has been an astounding harvest.

And it is because of the cross on Calvary. “For this purpose,” he explains, “have I come.”

Put bluntly, Jesus understood that he was born so that he could die.

And he died so that you and I could live.

“For this purpose have I come.”

Someone once said that each of us has only one goal in life: to get to heaven, and to bring as many souls with us as possible. Of course, along the way, things get a lot more complicated. Life gets more complicated. But these last few weeks have served to remind us of what matters, stripping away what isn’t needed. Lent helps us to simplify what has become complex â€" to burn away what is unnecessary, so that we are left with only what is essential and important.

And now, in these last days of Lent, as the cross comes into view, as the climb to Calvary becomes clear â€" as the wood and the nails and the thorns become real â€" take one last look at the road we have traveled the last five weeks. Maybe there have been detours and backtracks.

But it’s worth asking ourselves: what have we left undone? Is there unfinished business â€" hurts that we have left unattended, or amends that we need to make?

Have we opened our hearts to those in need? Have we worked to see in those we meet the face of Christ?

Have we reconciled ourselves with one another and with God?

Have we been â€" as Cardinal Bernardin put it â€" instruments in the hand of the Lord? -- http://www.patheos.com/

March 25, 2012, 11:27:33 AM

Bilocation is the alleged ability to be in two places at the same time. St Pio of Pietrelcina, the famous stigmatic, was said to have this ability. It is said to be a physical, rather than spiritual ability, which makes it different from astral projection. Friends of Aliester Crowley, the occultist, claimed that he had this ability, though in situations where he was meant to have bilocated, he was unaware of it. Although it is uncommon, bilocation is an ancient phenomenon. It is claimed to have been experienced, and even practiced by will, by mystics, ecstatics, saints, monks, holy persons, and magical adepts. This is also normally the explanation given for the tales of people appearing to loved ones just prior to their death. -- http://listverse.com/

The Nest of Bees was one of the more widely used rocket batteries of the Ming Dynasty. Thousands of these weapons could have been deployed simultaneously, raining death on the enemy's ranks.

History / Re: Ancient Chinese weapon: nest of bees
March 25, 2012, 11:14:31 AM
The Nest of Bees consisted of hexagonal tubes filled with dozens of rocket-tipped arrows (32). The tubes broaden towards the top to aid the dispersal of the arrows. It may not be the most accurate black powder weapon ever used but the fact that it is capable of firing off more than a dozen of arrows at the same time in all directions in front makes it an effective weapon. Another drawback would be that, it is a 2 handed weapon which made it awkward to move around. The arrows were often tipped with poison or flammable materials such as pitch, bitumen or resin which increases the chances of kills. The kinds of fire arrow devices the Ming employed: heavy and light batteries (on land and on water), poison tipped, metal "armour busters", explosive, massive, and handheld. These deadly arrows can penetrate flesh to bone and they could travel quite far - up to 5 football fields away, and were built with consistent formulas that allowed fairly predictable flight patterns. The arrow batteries could also have been fitted with shoulder straps and worn like a backpack into battle. When worn like this, the nest of bees can actually protect the warrior from flying debris.

Logical thought, also called scientific thought, is the process of reasoning and testing in order to deduce the truth in any situation so that it may be more widely applied. For example, noting that every time anyone eats a certain berry they grow sick and die leads to the conclusion that the berry is likely poisonous. However, noting that when one ate a certain fruit the rain began to fall should not lead to a conclusion of ‘eating fruit makes it rain’ because the process has not been repeated or tested to confirm the link. A large number of animals are able to make such connections without testing them logically. Many superstitions are a result of illogical connections, where a coincidence that occurs once or twice is wrongfully interpreted. Several ancient civilizations even developed priest-kings who interpreted various signs according to increasingly complex superstitions and often produced bizarre or destructive behaviors. The ability to think with increasing logic allowed humans to make important links with far-reaching consequences in every field of human endeavor. Every advance is thanks to our capacity to think logically and search for connections so that we may gradually build a better world for ourselves.

MANILA, Philippines - Presidential Adviser for Political Affairs Ronald Llamas called the attention of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic (CPP-NPA-NDF) for branding members of the so-called democratic left as counter-revolutionaries, making them targets of the insurgents’ liquidation operations.

“Three leaders of the Akbayan Citizens’ Action Party, the Democratic Left party (of) which I am a member, were included in a diagram of groups branded as counter-revolutionaries by the CPP leaderships,” declared Llamas in a lecture at the National Defense College of the Philippines (NDCP) at Camp Aguinaldo late last week.

Llamas was among the invited lecturers asked by the students to speak on “The Democratic Left and the CPP-NPA-NDF.”

Also singled out by CPP were Akbayan Rep. Walden Bello, Etta Rosales, chair of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) and Ric Reyes, currently president of the Freedom from Debt Coalition (FDC), he said.
