World boxing champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao on Monday revealed that he is losing endorsements abroad because his image had been tainted by a tax evasion case filed by the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

Pacquiao said at a press conference that his BIR case has tarnished his reputation overseas by creating a wrong impression that he is already being charged with tax evasion.

“Lumalabas sa Amerika na tax evader ako. Masama na ang tingin sa akin,” he said, adding that he will lose “millions of dollars” worth of endorsements until the issue is resolved.

“I am fighting for the glory of our country, and now I am being treated with this kind of harassment. I urge the BIR to stop this cavalier attitude,” he added.

Earlier this month, the BIR filed a case against Pacquiao for allegedly failing to submit documents such as tax records and contract endorsements the BIR asked him to produce.

Pacquiao’s battery of lawyers, however, claimed that the Sarangani representative was not given due process for denying him the opportunity to respond to the subpoena.

The boxing icon urged the BIR to sack the regional director of Region 12, Atty. Rozil Lozares, who filed the case against him in “bad faith” and besmirched his reputation.

“‘Yung mga taong tiwali at baluktot ang isip, kailangan na matanggal sa gobyerno. Hindi ata nila alam ang ginagawa nila. Sila ang nagpapabaluktot sa tuwid na daan ng pangulo,” Pacquiao said.

“Hindi ko naman sila pwedeng hamunin ng suntukan, talo na sila sa akin. Labanang legal nalang, para patas lang,” he added.

His lawyers added that they will file counter charges against Lozares for violating the anti- graft and corrupt practices act by causing “undue injury” to Pacquiao.

What is being done?

Members of CAOPI at the House of Representatives already have pending proposals to review the Oil Deregulation Law and to scrap VAT on oil. These have yet to be heard by the House committee on energy chaired by Batanes Representative Henedina Abad.

"Maybe the committee lacks energy," Mariano joked.

Even before the committee could hold hearings on the Oil Deregulation Law, news reports quote House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. as saying his colleagues are cool towards removing VAT on oil products.

"We haven't even discussed it yet. It's uncool not to address this problem," Magsaysay said.

CAOPI is calling on motorists and residents to hold a noise barrage from 5pm to 6pm on March 30 to pressure Malacanang.

"Malacanang shouldn't wait for more people to take action. This is basically people power already," Casino said.

He promised "coordinated actions" until the Aquino administration addresses rising oil prices.

#43451
'Corruption'

Other critics of government's seeming inaction against high fuel prices had harsher words.

"The Aquino administration's inaction is a form of corruption," Zambales Representative Mitos Magsaysay, a member of the House minority bloc, said at the same press conference. She said the government has been allowing petroleum companies Petron, Pilipinas Shell, and Chevron to rake in "windfall profits."

This was a sentiment echoed by Leon Peralta of the Anti-Trapo (Traditional Politician) Movement. He said that the issue of oil prices are wrapped up in graft and corruption. "We will investigate this, and if we find proof, we will charge people in the conspiracy to keep oil prices high," he said.

Anakpawis party-list Representative Rafael Mariano said allowing prices to rise even higher would be "a grave crime against the people."

Renato Reyes Jr., secretary-general of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, said the government cannot say it is powerless to keep oil prices low.

He said it should use its power to protect the needs and rights of consumers. "The government cannot be helpless," he said.

#43452
The group is calling for a stop in oil-price hikes and the suspension, lowering, or removal of the 12-percent value-added tax on oil.

Pio Granada of the National Economic Protectionism Association, who read the coalition's joint statement, said there is a need for a "nationalized oil industry free from foreign monopoly control."

Piston president George San Mateo, also with CAOPI, said the deregulation of oil prices--letting market forces dictate prices--could lead to a deregulation of commuter fares as well. "We already have semi-deregulation," he said, saying the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has been issuing provisional fare increases to adjust to rising fuel prices.

He said that commuters will be hurt most by rising fuel prices.

Ricky Papa, president of the Alliance of Concerned Truck Owners and Operators (ACTOO), warned that the trucking sector may go out of business if pump prices keep going up. "We are a dying industry," he said. If that happens, he said, it will cost more to ferry goods across the country.

"This government cannot be like a funeral service, making money as people die," he said.

"This is no longer the time for 'Noynoying'," Casino said.

By Jonathan de Santos | Yahoo! Southeast Asia Newsroom â€" 32 minutes ago

President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III cannot afford to rest on his high trust ratings, a coalition against oil price increases launched on Monday warned.

If left unaddressed, the rising cost of fuel may see Aquino's popularity disappear, Bayan Muna party-list Representative Teddy Casino said. He said rising fuel issues cause hunger and is not just a "political issue."

Barangay chairman Francisco Mariezeta III from Sampaloc, Manila, told reporters he is opposing oil price hikes because they were affecting the peace and order situation in his village. He said he had to mediate between a husband and wife who were fighting because there was no dinner on the table. The wife said she was not given enough money to buy cooking gas.

"It's almost election time, isn't it? This is an issue among the voters," he said.

"Not everything can be based on trust ratings," Casino said, referring to a Pulse Asia survey released last week that showed most respondents trusted and approved of the President's performance in the last three months.

Casino, one of the convenors of the multi-sectoral Coalition Against Oil Price Increases (CAOPI), said governmentthe must address rising fuel price. According to the latest Department of Energy price monitor, diesel sells at P46.30 to P49.30 per liter. Gasoline, meanwhile, sells at P55.05 to P61.72 per liter.

"This time, it isn't just Piston (Pinag-isang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide), not just transport groups (that oppose the price increases)," he said. He said CAOPI is the broadest multi-sectoral alliance against oil prices since the late 1990s, when the Oil Deregulation Law was passed.

Business and Economy / BSP sees inflation rising
March 26, 2012, 02:43:50 PM
Philstar â€" Sat, Mar 24, 2012

MANILA, Philippines - After easing to its lowest level in 29 months, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) sees inflation rising due to soaring oil prices, higher food prices, and the continued weakening of the peso against the US dollar.

BSP Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. said in a text message to reporters that inflation for March would range between 2.2 percent and 3.1 percent compared to a 29-month low of 2.7 percent in February.

“Inflation could be higher than February’s rate of 2.7 percent if the impact of higher international prices, the weak peso, and increases in the prices of certain food items were not fully offset by lower utility rates and lower prices of some vegetables,” Tetangco stressed.

Despite the projected uptick in inflation, the BSP chief is still confident that inflation would fall within the three to five percent target set by the BSP for this year and next year.

However, he pointed out that the possibilities of second round effects resulting from higher oil prices point to higher inflation ranges ahead.

Inflation eased to 2.7 percent in February from four percent in January bringing the average inflation to 3.3 percent in the first two months of the year.

Mananzan admitted that the number of women joining a religious order has declined over the years.

''If you will compare it to the 1950s it's not so much anymore, but we have yet to experience a crisis unlike in America and Europe where convents are closing down. We still have enough personnel. We even send missionaries all over the world,'' said Mananzan.

The Benedictine nun attributed the decline mainly to the secularization of the society.

''There's a lot of secularization and women have more opportunities now to serve the poor unlike before that you have enter the convent to do that,'' Mananzan said.

''To be celibate is a special vocation. If you want to help the poor you can do that without having the vow of celibacy. To have the vow of celibacy is something very special that's why I don't believe that everybody is called for that,'' she added.

But, Mananzan said, the degree of secularization in the Philippines is not so much unlike in other countries.

''There's a difference in the degree of secularization. In Europe, they don't go to church anymore unlike here our churches are full with people. The people are still very religious and families are more or less still intact,'' she said.

Mananzan said there are still more nuns than are priests in the Philippines.

''I think we are about 10,000...there are more nuns than priests,'' she said.

In 2004, then Imus Bishop Luis Antonio Tagle disclosed that there is a shortage of priests in the Philippines and at least 25,000 are needed to serve some 68 million Filipino Catholics.

Tagle, chairman of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines' Episcopal commission on doctrine of faith, said the 8,700 priests nationwide are overworked since the ideal ratio should be one priest for at least 2,000 parishioners.

That time, he said, the country has only one priest serving 15,000 Catholics.

Mananzan then invited the youth to consider entering the religious life.

''To the youth, if you want a meaningful life, this is a very meaningful life. I could say that because I'm a nun for more than 55 years and I'm not regretting it at all,'' she said.

Manila Bulletin â€" 16 hours ago

MANILA, Philippines - Women who want to be a nun should try having a boyfriend first. The surprising advice is not from some liberal activist, but from a Benedictine nun, Sr. Mary John Mananzan.

Mananzan, the head of the Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines (AMRSP), said having a romantic relationship with a man is one way of helping a woman find out if she is really meant to spend a life of meditation, embracing the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.

''I tell them go have a boyfriend or if they have a suitor, I tell them entertain him,'' she told reporters in an interview during a gathering in Manila.

''I don't mind if they'll have a boyfriend; at least they have a choice so that when they're inside (a convent) they won't be tempted anymore,'' the 74 year-old nun said.

Mananzan also counseled young women to try working first.

''If they are only 22 years old, we tell them to work first for them to experience it so that they won't regret it later,'' she said.

Despite the enthusiasm from some serious bikers, the eco-friendly bikes have yet to crack the mainstream market. Joni Bonifacio, an organizer of biking tours in Catbalogan, in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines, does not believe in the durability of the bamboo bike frames.

"The bike fames are not available in our province. Bamboo frames are not good for rugged terrain. If I go to the mountains and the bike experiences jumps and bumps, the frame might break," he said.

Some other bikers -- like Lalaine Agarma Barroga, an organizer of Bikexplore Philippines who works at the Milo Caca Bike shop -- say the bamboo bikes are just too expensive for what they provide. Such bikes are "not durable compared to alloy or carbon," she said. "This type of frame is for recreational use only."

#43482
Each one is handmade. The company gets its bamboo from suppliers in multiple parts of the Philippines, relying on varieties that are hard and durable, including some that are used for furniture and in construction. The bamboo is then dried to avoid splitting, with abaca, a plant fiber, used to join the poles together. The only power tool used in production is an electric drill, which runs for a maximum of three minutes per frame.

People who use the bikes say they provide a smoother ride than some of the most sophisticated metal alloys, in large part because bamboo naturally absorbs shocks from bumpy rides

#43483
Manila Bulletin â€" Sat, Mar 24, 2012

MANILA, Philippines - Bike frames have come a long way from steel and aluminum to exotic alloys and carbon fibers. Now, in the Philippines, they're going all the way back to bamboo.

The "bamboo bike" is turning into the latest hot item for environmentalists here, with its low carbon footprint. Bamboo is also tough and light: Bamboo bike frames weigh about seven to ten pounds.

The bikes are made by KawayanTech (Kawayan is a Filipino term for bamboo), a company whose objectives are to develop "indigenous forms of bikes and other alternative means of transport," including bamboo bikes and bamboo skateboards as "social entrepreneurship," according to its mission statement.

Los Angeles (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - Filipinos are now the second largest Asian group in the United States, according to the latest census bureau report.

The number of Americans who have identified themselves as Filipino, either alone or in combination with another race, totalled 3.4 million, the report showed.

The total number is believed to be much higher than the census count. There are an estimated one million undocumented Filipinos in the United States.

Chinese-Americans make up the largest Asian group, with more than 4 million. Those from the Indian subcontinent are the third largest, with 3.2 million. Other significantly large Asian groups include the Vietnamese, with 1.7 million; Koreans, with 1.7 million, and the Japanese, with 1.3 million.

This statistical profile was based on the 2010 census of major racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Released on March 22, the statistical portrait of the Asian-American and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander populations was produced for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which is celebrated annually in May.

The report also showed that Asians were the fastest growing population, increasing nearly 46 percent over the last decade. Their number increased to more than 17 million from 2000 to 2010. A close second was the Latino population, which rose by 43 per cent. By comparison, the African American and white populations grew by only 15 per cent and 7 per cent, respectively.

Census officials attributed the fast growth of the Asian population to immigration.

California, known as the gateway for Asian immigrants, had the largest population of Asian Americans, with close to 6 million, or nearly a third of the total nationwide. It was followed by New York, with 1.6 million. Hawaii had the highest percentage of Asians, who make up 57 per cent of the island state's population.

The report showed that the Asian population grew dramatically in other states, such as Nevada, where the number rose by 116 per cent, and Arizona, by 95 per cent.

Among metropolitan areas, New York City had the largest Asian population, with more than 1 million, followed by Los Angeles, with 484,000, and San Jose, with 347,000.

Filipinos are the largest Asian group in the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Washington, Wyoming and South Dakota. The Chinese made up the largest Asian group in Colorado, Oregon, Utah, District of Columbia, North Dakota, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Medical update

Nora gave an update on her medical treatment in the US.

“Na-check-up na ako ng doktor.  Kaya kailangang bumalik ako para sa operation. Totoo iyon (na malaki ang magiging expenses). Kaya pinag-iipunan ko pa ‘yong ibang dapat gastusin.”

Nora is slated to do new projects for her home network, TV5, but she will first make a movie with multi-awarded director Brillante Mendoza this April.

‘It really hurts’

Although she regrets the damage to her vocal cords, Nora has learned to accept the fact that a lot of harm has been done.

“Masakit talaga. Nagsisi ako kung bakit ko ginawa (ang cosmetic surgery), pero andoon na iyon, eh.  Wala na tayong magagawa.”

Nora admits always listening to her hit songs even if it hurts her.  She is happy that Noranians continue to believe in her.

“Iyon na lang ang nagbibigay-buhay din sa akin talaga. Maliban sa pamilya at sa lahat ng mga nagmamahal sa akin,” she said.

Nora Aunor hopes that she’ll be able to sing again someday.

The superstar underwent cosmetic surgery years ago that allegedly damaged her vocal cords. She returned to the country in February after a series of medical check-up and treatment for her vocal cords in the U.S.

Nora, who made a showbiz comeback last year and did a couple of acting projects, said seeing other people sing makes her cry, since she misses performing before an audience so much.

“Umiiyak pa rin ako kapag nakakapanood ng mga kumakanta.  Sa totoo lang,” Nora said in an interview at the 9th Enpress Golden Screen Awards on Saturday, March 24, in Teatrino Greenhills.

Nora received the Lino Brocka Lifetime Achievement award.

this is one area where to fail is to succeed.  or to be lucky.  or to be blessed.  whatever.  it's great to know that some who attempted to end their lives ended up not ending their lives at all in their own sweet time.  that is why it pays never to end it at all.  whatever.

but first, an ad worth copying:

don't worry.  it's just an advert.

Of course. But I suppose at the back of your mind you were reminded of the notion that cats are supposed to have nine (9) lives? 8)

Switching to low fat foods

When getting started in healthy eating, it is tempting to opt for low fat foods in order to help keep off excess pounds. However, cutting out ‘good’ fats such as omega-3 fatty acids could be detrimental to your health. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in oily fish, walnuts and flaxseeds, not only help to keep skin supple and wrinkle-free, they are also essential for good brain and heart health and can help prevent arthritis. -- http://ph.she.yahoo.com/

Slathering on sunscreen

Official advice for many years has warned about the dangers of skin cancer, causing many of us to take measures to cover up in the sun at all times. However, while it is extremely important to protect your skin, experts have more recently advised that little and frequent sun exposure is good for us, preventing vitamin D deficiency, which can lead to rickets, osteomalacia and depression. Official advice in the UK, where rickets has recently made a comeback, is to spend 10 minutes in the midday sun without sunblock each day before covering skin up.

Taking nutritional supplements

We all know that vitamins are good for us, but relying on nutritional supplements can actually be bad for your health. Separate studies have shown that high doses of vitamin supplements including iron, magnesium and vitamin B6 raise the death rate of older women, while taking vitamin E can increase men’s risk of prostate cancer. While certain people may be required to take vitamins (those with low levels of vitamin D, for example, or vegans who may be deficient in vitamin B12), for most people a better approach is to opt for a varied diet full of fruit and vegetables which will give you all the nutrients you need.
