very interesting.  thanks, lorenz.  i'm getting at this slowly.  it's because i seem to be living these past characters in my mind.

what i can glean so far is that your lolo sa sungay (or tuhod or siko?), chose to stay in valencia and hold on to his family name.  ours went back to china and never came back, deliberately or not, by force of circumstance or not, and chose to change his name to spanish.  but tan was used as the middle name by his children (one of whom was our grandfather) instead of his wife's family name.

i hope my little knowledge of those yesteryears hews close to the truth.  there is always the danger of addition and subtraction, of subjective-objective correlatives, with oral stories passed down from generation to generation.  meantime, i'll keep checking and counterchecking.  this is getting more interesting.  and you're helping me a lot.

Tita,

Do share your discoveries on your family lineage in this thread. Thank You.

Novena to Mary, Undoer of Knots - Day 2

1. Make the sign of the cross

2. Say the Act of Contrition. Ask pardon for your sins and make a firm promise not to commit them again.

3. Say the first 3 decades of the Rosary.

4. Make the meditation of the day (to be posted each day)

5. Say the last 2 decades of the rosary

6. Finish with the Prayer to Our Lady the Undoer of Knots

Meditation for Day 2

Mary, Beloved Mother, channel of all grace, I return to You today my heart, recognizing that I am a sinner in need of your help. Many times I lose the graces you grant me because of my sins of egoism, pride, rancor and my lack of generosity and humility. I turn to You today, Mary, Undoer of knots, for You to ask your Son Jesus to grant me a pure, divested, humble and trusting heart. I will live today practicing these virtues and offering you this as a sign of my love for You. I entrust into Your hands this knot (...describe) which keeps me from reflecting the glory of God.

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

Mary offered all the moments of her day to God.

PRAYER TO MARY, UNDOER OF KNOTS (Closing Prayer)

Virgin Mary, Mother of fair love, Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of a child in need, Mother whose hands never cease to serve your beloved children because they are moved by the divine love and immense mercy that exists in your heart, cast your compassionate eyes upon me and see the snarl of knots that exist in my life.

You know very well how desperate I am, my pain and how I am bound by these knots.
Mary, Mother to whom God entrusted the undoing of the knots in the lives of his children, I entrust into your hands the ribbon of my life.

No one, not even the evil one himself, can take it away from your precious care. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone.

Powerful Mother, by your grace and intercessory power with Your Son and My Liberator, Jesus, take into your hands today this knot...I beg you to undo it for the glory of God, once for all, You are my hope.
O my Lady, you are the only consolation God gives me, the fortification of my feeble strength, the enrichment of my destitution and with Christ the freedom from my chains.
Hear my plea.

Keep me, guide me, protect me, o safe refuge!

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

Amen.

This ancient Christian belief that Mary is present in the Church both yesterday and today is demonstrated through the ongoing devotional practices associated with her. Contemporary Christians, however, may be tempted to dismiss many of these more ancient practices as superfluous, belonging to another place and time. But it is best to retain a respectful silence until one has the opportunity to grasp the deeper idea behind the practice. C. S. Lewis described the temptation to dismiss the beliefs and practices from other times as “chronological snobbery.”

Especially within the ever-evolving Christian world, we may be inclined to think in terms of an ongoing revelation where the faithful are always growing closer to the truth. We may imagine that from our place in history we know more than those who went before us. But according to Lewis, this kind of thinking is a grave error. While it can be equally dangerous to believe the opposite fallacy â€" that all that is ancient is somehow right or superior â€" it is certainly wise to listen to the voices of those who have gone before us and to see if their experiences might speak to and enrich our own spiritual lives. This is especially important when we think about how Christians in earlier times expressed their faith and their devotion to the saints.

Many who find their way into the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches later in life find that encountering Mary is a long process that continually calls them to leave behind their own contemporary assumptions about her and to grow and transform as they come to know Mary as she has been loved through the ages.

Pope Paul IV wrote, “When the liturgy turns its gaze either to the primitive Church or to the Church of our day it always finds Mary. In the primitive Church she is seen praying with the apostles; in our own day, she is actively present and the Church desires to live the mystery of Christ with her” (from his statement, Marialis Cultus, 1974).

Many of these devotional practices may seem foreign if you are not from a Roman Catholic or Orthodox background. Although Mary is an integral part of the worship and prayer life of these churches, the intercessions of the saints make up a small (but significant) portion of the whole spiritual life.

Especially for those who are not raised in these churches but come to them later in life, the veneration of Mary can be a great struggle. As prominent Roman Catholic writer Fr. Richard John Neuhaus wrote in a forward to the book Mary: A Catholic-Evangelical Debate, “For many of us who entered into full communion with the Catholic Church later in life, Marian doctrine and devotion was at one time a problem. I daresay that for most of us, and certainly for me, Marian doctrine and devotion has become an exciting and never-ending discovery of deeper dimensions of Christian fidelity.”

Blessed Virgin Mary,
who can worthily repay you with praise
and thanks for having rescued a fallen world
by your generous consent!
Receive our gratitude,
and by your prayers obtain the pardon of our sins.
Take our prayers into the sanctuary of heaven
and enable them to make our peace with God.

Holy Mary, help the miserable,
strengthen the discouraged,
comfort the sorrowful,
pray for your people,
plead for the clergy,
intercede for all women consecrated to God.
May all who venerate you
feel now your help and protection.
Be ready to help us when we pray,
and bring back to us the answers to our prayers.
Make it your continual concern
to pray for the people of God,

Prayer to Mary, Queen in the Home

O Blessed Virgin Mary, you are the mother and queen of every Christian family. When you conceived and gave birth to Jesus, human motherhood reached its greatest achievement. From the time of the Annunciation you were the living chalice of the Son of God made man. You are the queen of the home. As a woman of faith, you inspire all mothers to transmit faith to their children. Watch over our families. Let children learn free and loving obedience inspired by your obedience to God. Let parents learn dedication and selflessness based on your unselfish attitude. Let all families honor you and remain devoted to you so that they may be held together by your example and your intercession.
Amen.

Most holy and immaculate Virgin, Mother of Jesus and our loving Mother, being his Mother, you shared in his universal kingship. The prophets and angels proclaimed him King of peace. With loving fervor in our hearts we salute and honor you as Queen of peace.

We pray that your intercession may protect us and all people from hated and discord, and direct our hearts into the ways of peace and justice which your Son taught and exemplified. We ask your maternal care for our Holy Father who works to reconcile the nations in peace. We seek your guidance for our President and other leaders as they strive for world peace.

Glorious Queen of peace, grant us peace in our hearts, harmony in our families and concord throughout the world. Immaculate Mother, as patroness of our beloved country, watch over us and protect us with your motherly love. Amen.

"Those who die wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire." This must not be understood superstitiously or magically, but in light of  Catholic teaching that perseverance in faith, hope and love are required for salvation. The scapular is a powerful reminder of this Christian obligation and of Mary's promise to help those consecrated to her obtain the grace of final perseverance.

Investiture

Conferral with the scapular indicates a special devotion and consecration to Mary. No one should undertake it who is not spiritual prepared to live in accordance with it.

The short form of investing or conferral consists of a priest or deacon taking a blessed scapular and while placing it over their head reciting with the person any Marian prayer (e.g. Hail Mary, Memorare, Salve Regina). The person is now invested. They don't have any lists to join, though they are henceforth members of the Scapular Confraternity and share in its spiritual benefits (the prayers of the members). No special daily practices are obliged, though someone consecrated to Mary, of which the scapular is THE sign, should live chastity according to their state and recite the rosary daily.

There is also a long form in the Book of Blessings, chapter 46, which is very fitting for group investments. Every parish should have this ritual book.

For some years the Carmelite Order had permission from Rome to grant laity the Indult to enroll people. This permission is no longer given, but those who received the Indult in the past still have it. So, while laity may not bless a scapular, there are some lay people who can invest others, with a scapular previously blessed by a priest or deacon.

One final note, investing MUST be done with the cloth scapular. Those who wish to wear the medal can do so after investment. The scapular blessing attaches to each subsequent scapular. A new blessing is NOT required. This is not true of the medal, each of which must be blessed by a priest or deacon.

Question and Answer / Re: Do you wear a scapular?
July 20, 2013, 07:58:19 AM
History

A scapular is a garment worn by religious over the shoulders (scapula), and hanging down in front and back, usually to about the bottom of the habit. It developed as a practical garment, protecting the habit during work, and was in time invested with spiritual significance, consecration or dedication to God.

By analogy to the scapulars of religious, there are small scapulars that are derived from them which represent a particular devotion or spirituality, usually associated with a particular community. Such a scapular is two pieces of cloth (generally about an inch square), connected by cords and worn over the head. It often has a picture or a particular color, depending on the spirituality it stands for.

The best known and most highly esteemed scapular, and the one most favored by the Church, and by the Blessed Virgin in many of her apparitions, is the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. It is adapted from the scapular of the Carmelite Order and represents a special Consecration to Our Lady under the title of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Those who wear it practice it a special devotion to Mary. In the past this was the Little Office of Our Lady, but today this can be commuted by any priest to the rosary. In addition, the person has a special entrustment of themselves to Mary for their salvation. This, in fact, has been promised to those who faithfully wear the scapular:  "Those who die wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire." This must not be understood superstitiously or magically, but in light of  Catholic teaching that perseverance in faith, hope and love are required for salvation. The scapular is a powerful reminder of this Christian obligation and of Mary's promise to help those consecrated to her obtain the grace of final perseverance.

1. Make the sign of the cross

2. Say the Act of Contrition. Ask pardon for your sins and make a firm promise not to commit them again.
Oh my God I am heartily sorry for having offended you. I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell. But most of all, because I offended you, oh my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen

3. Say the first 3 decades of the Rosary.

4. Make the meditation of the day (to be posted each day)

5. Say the last 2 decades of the rosary

6. Finish with the Prayer to Our Lady the Undoer of Knots

Meditation for Day 1
Dearest Holy Mother, Most Holy Mary, you undo the knots that suffocate your children, extend your merciful hands to me. I entrust to You today this knot....and all the negative consequences that it provokes in my life. I give you this knot that torments me and makes me unhappy and so impedes me from uniting myself to You and Your Son Jesus, my Savior.
I run to You, Mary, Undoer of Knots because I trust you and I know that you never despise a sinning child who comes to ask you for help. I believe that you can undo this knot because Jesus grants you everything. I believe that you want to undo this knot because you are my Mother. I believe that You will do this because you love me with eternal love.

Thank you, Dear Mother.

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

The one who seeks grace, finds it in Mary's hands.

PRAYER TO MARY, UNDOER OF KNOTS (Closing Prayer)

How this devotion started?

To show us the mission granted to the Virgin Mary by Her Son, an artist Johann Melchior Georg Schmittdner painted Mary Undoer of Knots with great grace. Since 1700, his painting has been venerated in the Church of St. Peter in Perlack, Augsburg, Germany. It was originally inspired by a meditation of Saint Irenaeus (Bishop of Lyon and martyred in 202) based on the parallel made by Saint Paul between Adam and Christ. Saint Irenaeus, in turn, made a comparison between Eve and Mary, saying:“Eve, by her disobedience, tied the knot of disgrace for the human race; whereas Mary, by her obedience, undid it”.

But what are these knots?

There are the problems and struggles we face for which we do not see any solution … knots of discord in your family, lack of understanding between parents and children, disrespect, violence, the knots of deep hurts between husband and wife, the absence of peace and joy at home. There are also the knots of anguish and despair of separated couples, the dissolution of the family, the knots of a drug addict son or daughter, sick or separated from home or God, knots of alcoholism, the practice of abortion, depression, unemployment, fear, solitude…Ah, the knots of our life! How they suffocate the soul, beat us down and betray the heart’s joy and separate us from God.

Day after day, more and more Christians kneel to pray to Her as soon as they meet the Mother of the Fair Love.  Many families have become reconciled! Many diseases have been healed! Many spouses have returned to the Church! Many jobs have been given! Many conversions have taken place! Many Catholics have been on their knees praying and giving thanks for graces received from our sweet Mother. For that reason, Mary Who undoes the knots, Who was chosen by God to crush the evil with Her feet, comes to us to reveal Herself. She comes to provide jobs, good health, to reconcile families, because She wants to undo the knots of our sins which dominate our lives, so that â€" as sons of the King â€" we can receive the promises reserved for us from eternity. She comes with promises of victory, peace, blessings and reconciliation.

Then, free from our knots â€" filled with happiness, we can be a testimony of the Divine Power in this world, like pieces of God’s heart or small bottles of perfume exhaling mercy and love to our neighbor. Like ambassador of Jesus Christ and the Virgin of the fair love, we can rescue those who cry without any consolation, those who are lonely, tied with knots, who have no God, no Father nor Mother.

Mother of the Rising Sun, Immaculate, our Advocate, Helper in moments of affliction, Mother of God and made by Him our Mother, this is how Mary, Undoer of Knots is presented. Above all, She comes as the Queen of Mercy, the one who knows all about us, who has compassion for us and hurries to rescue us, praying for each one of us to Her beloved Jesus.

May the Holy Spirit aid him in his spiritual healing. May the Peace of God entice mutual edification of the faithful, forgiveness of pride and the grace to accept and heed doctrinal correction.

May God Be Glorified In His Church!

Poems and Poets / Trust in the Lord

The wind's not always at our back,
The sky is not always blue.
Sometimes we crave the things we lack,
And don't know what to do.

Sometimes life's an uphill ride,
With mountains we must climb.
At times the river's deep and wide,
And crossing takes some time.

No one said that life is easy,
There are no guarantees.
So Trust in the Lord continually,
On calm or stormy seas.

The challenges we face today,
Prepares us for tomorrow.
For faith takes our fears away,
And peace replaces sorrow.

Poems and Poets / My Prayer For You
July 18, 2013, 10:21:20 PM
by Author Unknown

I thought of you so much today
I went to God in prayer.
To ask Him to watch over you
and show you that I care.

My prayer for you was not for rewards
ones that you can touch or feel.
But true rewards for happiness
that are so very real.

Like love and understanding
in all the things you do.
For guidance when you need it most
to see your troubles through.

I asked Him for good health for you
so your future could be bright.
And faith to accept life's challenges
with courage to do what's right.

I gave thanks to Him for granting my prayer
to bring you peace and love.
May you feel the warmth in your life
with Gods blessings from above

Bro,

Its July 18, 2013. It's one day before your birthday, my dearest friend and brother. Tomorrow on July 19, 2013 you will turn 28 years old. As I write this and greet you I can't help the tears fill my eyes as I remember you and the beautiful soul that you had, kindness that you showed to everyone around you. I cannot help, Robert, to think of the 'could have beens'.

Its just so crazy how time has gone by since you left us, bro. It's been almost 6 years. I wish you were still here, my dearest friend, I wanted to share with you all the experiences I've had in college writing, the debates i needed your help on, haha! I wish you were there when I started medical school to laugh with me when I was studying in the wee hours of the morning. I can't help also ponder on what you have done had you not had left us so early. But I can't think like that, because everything happened according to the Book of Life. I just wish that you were still around.

This July 19, 2013, I'm going to mass for you, bro. My Birthday Wish for you, Rob, is to be in peace. I pray that you are now at peace, that your stay in Purgatory is over. And that through merciful prayers of Our Blessed Mother Mary, all the Angels and Saints and to us your family and friends, you will be granted pardon of all your sins. Please pray for me also, Rob, please pray for Allison, pray for your mother and father and your brothers.

Rob, I'm also going to celebrate my 28th birthday this coming July 23. We're getting older, dude. haha.

Just wanted to write to you and let you know that I miss you....

I Love You,
Always,
Al

Hi Nong,

He was my best friend and beloved by all his friends and family. Life brings us beloved friends who come to our lives and make a beautiful impact to how we view things. Forever he will live in my heart. I know I will see him in heaven...

May God bless us...

Lord Jesus, our Redeemer, You willingly gave Yourself up to death so that all people might be saved and pass from death into a new life. Listen to our prayers; look with love on Your people who mourn and pray for their dead brother/sister.
Lord Jesus, You alone are holy and compassionate; forgive our brother/sister his/her sins.
By dying You opened the gates of life for those who believe in You; do not let Your brother/sister be parted from You, but by Your glorious power give him/her light, joy, and peace in heaven where You live for ever and ever. Amen.

My brother (sister) in faith, I entrust you to God Who created you.
May you return to the One Who formed you from the dust of this earth.
May Mary, the angels, and all the saints come to meet you as you go forth from this life.
May Christ Who was crucified for you bring you freedom and peace.
May Christ, the Son of God, Who died for you take you into His kingdom.
May Christ, the Good Shepherd, give you a place within His flock.
May He forgive your sins and keep you among His people.
May you see your Redeemer face to face and enjoy the sight of God forever. Amen.

Dearest beloved ones,

First and foremost, Peace and Blessings in the Name of Jesus Christ, who longs for all to love one another as perfectly as God the Father Loves all of us! Brothers, may I kindly and softly remind you both that animosity and malcontent with certain individuals do not do good for the soul, and for our own peace of mind. I write to you after I was touched and deeply inspired after my sojourn yesterday with my sister to the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians.

While I was hearing Holy Mass at 11 am, our celebrant, a Carmelite Father, talked about the importance of joy in finding a loved one. He mad a beautiful sermon of how God's love is equivalent to how a mother who longs to see a muched loved and missed son who came back to her arms again. The priest illustrated that a mother would open her arms as wide as possible to behold her son, beloved and cherished. The flesh of her own flesh, and product of her own womb. This type of love is but an example of How God the Father, who is from Everlasting to Everlasting, loves us. The priest reiterated how Christ Jesus reminded his apostles and disciples to love one another perfectly, to love despite differences, anger, resentment. It is important to put away such animosity and find the place in our hearts to change our feelings of discontent, grudge, and replace it with Love, Forgiveness.

I would like to share that beautiful sermon that I heard at the Basilica with you all here.

Peace be with you both, and May God's Peace, which is eternal and transcends all things, be with you all.
This I ask and pray in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For those who haven't been here and are adorers of Mary, this place is definitely a worthy pilgrimage site. Such a peaceful and beautiful place.

God Bless!

Yesterday I went to the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Germantown, Wisconsin. I went there with my little sister, Lorraine Angeli. I wish you all could have come and see it, 'twas truly beautiful and peaceful. We prayed with the Discalced Carmelite Friars.

This is the large Bodhidharma, it’s quite spectacular. I’m sorry the photo is so dark. There were too many candles!

This figure of Bodhidharma is not the large one at the Hualin temple honoring him. The large one was too difficult to photograph (it didn’t come out well). But, I liked this one too.
