Philippine Navy needs to update its hardware and arm all ships of the Combined Philippine Fleet with SSM, and guided missile platforms. That should deter any Chinese ship from encroaching deep into Philippine Republican Waters. :)

Come on, get real. No amount of upgrading of Philippine military hardware within Philippine financial capability will deter any Chinese intention of encroaching into Philippine waters. If the Chinese will not attack the Philippines, it is not because of our ability to retaliate, but because of what they might expose themselves to for picking on a pushover.

There is a gas station past the bridge towards Dauis. One time I was driving past there and stopped by to get gas, as I was heading my way towards Valencia, and requested 1500 pesos fill up. I saw that the meter stopped at 1,320.00 pesos. The pump attendant said to me, "1500 Pesos, Sir."  I immediately asked for my change and he said to me, "Oh, sir, the total is 1500 pesos."

I got out of my Isuzu Crosswind and pointed to the tank where it said "1,320.00 PESOS". Ingon gajod ko nija, "Buddy, do your math. Now give me back my change. DALI!"

Illegal swertres in Bohol could no longer be viable to some operators who feared bankruptcy after a series of hit in the number combinations.

An illegal swertres operator even admitted that his capital had been drained already with no single day without a winning combination in his tally sheet.

On this, he decided to quit from the underground business for good since a month ago yet or wake up bankrupt one day.

The downfall of illegal swertres started showing underground financiers could no longer afford to pay the winning bettors, following a series of target combinations.

Palawan ex-governor Joel Reyes and Coron Mayor Mario Reyes, suspects in the murder of broadcaster Gerry Ortega, are officially fugitives, Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo said.

In a text message to Yahoo! Southeast Asia, Robredo said the Department of Interior and Local Government launched the manhunt early Thursday morning "when we were informed that the Reyeses will not surrender contrary to initial information that they might."

The manhunt is being conducted by DILG-Office of Internal Security. They are coordinating with the police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, Robredo said.

In a recorded message aired Thursday morning, the former governor said he will not surrender but he would face the charge against him at the proper time.

He said he was in hiding "not to run away from justice but in order to avoid the persecution, ridicule and accusations that are being thrown at me without basis."

Mayor Reyes, has been on leave of absence from his duties as Coron town mayor, Robredo said. Now that he is a fugitive from justice, that leave will be recalled.

"We will use all resources available to secure the arrest of the Reyes brothers," Robredo told Yahoo! Southeast Asia.

The Reyeses are suspected of being behind the death of Ortega, who was gunned down in Puerto Princesa City in January last year. Ortega had been critical of the former governor for Reyes' perceived inaction against mining companies breaking environmental laws.

Marlon Recamata, the alleged gunman was caught right after the shooting and confessed that he and his group had been paid P150,000 for the hit. Rodolfo Edrad Jr., Reyes' bodyguard, claimed that he organized Ortega's murder under orders from the former governor.

A Justice Department panel already ordered the charges against the Reyeses. The panel also accepted new evidence including text messages between Edrad and ex-governor Reyes before and after the murder.

A Palawan court issued arrest warrants for the Reyeses and former provincial administrator Romeo Seratubias last Tuesday.

Philippine police rescued 300 badly injured pitbulls and arrested seven South Koreans after busting a massive online dog fighting syndicate, the head of the operation said Sunday.

Four Filipino caretakers were also taken in for questioning after the Friday raid at a two-hectare farm in the city of San Pablo just south of the capital Manila, Chief Inspector Renante Galang said.

"The dogs were in very bad shape. They were either sick or were wounded," Galang told AFP.

"This was a major online gambling syndicate in which they cruelly pitted the dogs against each other, sometimes to the death."

The dog fights were being broadcast online to a betting audience.

Galang said two of those arrested Friday had also been held in December after police busted a similar operation in a nearby province, when 240 dogs were rescued. The men had been released after posting bail.

Local animal rights group, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), said a check on the animals showed that many were severely injured, with ripped ears and tongues, including 20 that needed to be euthanised.

PAWS programme director Anna Cabrera said her group was now coordinating with other agencies to try and rehabilitate the pitbulls, many of which had not been properly fed or sheltered.

She said many more could be put down if no help arrived.

"The government simply does not have a facility big enough to hold these animals," she said, adding that the pitbulls were bred for fighting and could not be placed together in a single cage.

She called on the government to overhaul its animal rights law that allows suspects to post bail of about $100 and go free while their cases moved through the country's notoriously slow court system.

A picture released by PAWS on its Facebook page showed one emaciated dog chained to a tree. In the background, steel drums were being used as dog kennels.

I did not know that information on the age profile of TB members is available. Is it?  And what does mature (edaran) mean? Are we talking of calendar age, or emotional/intellectual maturity? If the former, what is the cut-off age? If the latter, what are the parameters? A vague question does not have the right to demand accurate answers.

"Doing penance for one's sins is a first step towards obtaining forgiveness and winning eternal salvation. That is the clear and explicit teaching of Christ, and no one can fail to see how justified and how right the Catholic Church has always been in constantly insisting on this. She is the spokesman for her divine Redeemer. No individual Christian can grow in perfection, nor can Christianity gain in vigor, except it be on the basis of penance." -Pope John XXIII

"Lenten practices of giving up pleasures are good reminders that the purpose of life is not pleasure. The purpose of life is to attain to perfect life, all truth and undying ecstatic love â€" which is the definition of God. In pursuing that goal we find happiness. Pleasure is not the purpose of anything; pleasure is a by-product resulting from doing something that is good. One of the best ways to get happiness and pleasure out of life is to ask ourselves, “How can I please God?” and, “Why am I not better?” It is the pleasure-seeker who is bored, for all pleasures diminish with repetition." -Fulton J. "We can think of Lent as a time to eradicate evil or cultivate virtue, a time to pull up weeds or to plant good seeds. Which is better is clear, for the Christian ideal is always positive rather than negative. A person is great not by the ferocity of his hatred of evil, but by the intensity of his love for God. Asceticism and mortificdation are not the ends of a Christian life; they are only the means. The end is charity. Penance merely makes an opening in our ego in which the Light of God can pour. As we deflate ourselves, God fills us. And it is GOD’s arrival that is the important event." -Fulton J. Sheen

"Let works of piety, therefore, be our delight, and let us be filled with those kinds of food which feed us for eternity. Let us rejoice in the replenishment of the poor, whom our bounty has satisfied. Let us delight in the clothing of those whose nakedness we have covered with needful raiment. Let our humaneness be felt by the sick in their illnesses, by the weakly in their infirmities, by the exiles in their hardships, by the orphans in their destitution, and by solitary widows in their sadness: in the helping of whom there is no one that cannot carry out some amount of benevolence. For no one’s income is small, whose heart is big: and the measure of one’s mercy and goodness does not depend on the size of one’s means. Wealth of goodwill is never rightly lacking, even in a slender purse. Doubtless the expenditure of the rich is greater, and that of the poor smaller, but there is no difference in the fruit of their works, where the purpose of the workers is the same."    -Pope Leo the Great
#42959
"The holy season of Lent is fast advancing; the choicest graces are being daily offered us; woe to the man whose mind is distracted by the fashion of this world that passeth away,  and takes no thought for eternity and heaven, and, even in this of grace, is like tamarick, a worthless weed of the desert.  Oh how numerous is this class! and how terrible is their spiritual indifference! Pray for them, O ye faithful children of the Church, pray for them without ceasing.  Offer up you penances and your almsgivings for them.  Despair not; and remember that, each year, many straying sheep are brought to the fold by such intercession as this.” -Abbot Gueranger

“[W]hen we sinned we lost sight of our last end and the threefold concupiscence blinded us.  Let us loose no time, but return to the Lord our God; a delay might bring upon us that curse, which our prophet says overtakes the unrepenting sinner; he shall not see good, when good shall come*."  -Abbot Gueranger
#42963
“It [penance] does not mean sacrifice and self denial in the first place, but a “change of heart,” a victory over sin and a striving for holiness.  The sacrifices of fasting and self-denial are only means and signs of this spiritual penance.  If people understand this well, they will not put the main effort in Lent on technical feats of abstaining from pleasures (which sometimes make them proud or vain), but in sincere contrition, prayer and humble fight against their faults.” - Fr. Francis X. Weiser S.J.
#42964
“The observance of Lent is the very badge of Christian warfare. By it we prove ourselves not to be enemies of the cross of Christ. By it we avert the scourges of divine justice. By it we gain strength against the princes of darkness, for it shields us with heavenly help. Should mankind grow remiss in their observance of Lent, it would be a detriment to God’s glory, a disgrace to the Catholic religion, and a danger to Christian souls. Neither can it be doubted that such negligence would become the source of misery to the world, of public calamity, and of private woe.” -Pope Benedict XVI
#42965
“Christ, like a skillful physician, understands the weakness of men. He loves to teach the ignorant and the erring he turns again to his own true way. "And eventually, the choosing becomes easier, the darkness lifts, and walking in Jesus' way is not quite such a struggle for a while. But the darkness will always return, often unexpectedly. That is why I need Lent, because it bears witness to the reality of darkness, of doubt, of fear, of pain. And it carries me through those real places, real experiences into one that is more fully and truly Real: the Reality of Resurrection, of Light, of Life." -Kimberlee Conway Ireton

“Each year, Lent offers us a providential opportunity to deepen the meaning and value of our Christian lives, and it stimulates us to rediscover the mercy of God so that we, in turn, become more merciful toward our brothers and sisters. In the Lenten period, the Church makes it her duty to propose some specific tasks that accompany the faithful concretely in this process of interior renewal: these are prayer, fasting and almsgiving.”   -Pope Benedict XVI

#42973
"Lent is a retreat that the Church gives us in order to re-focus on what should be first in our lives. The purpose of Jesus' life was to glorify the Father and save the world. ..Lent is not first a time of giving up but a time to re-choose to be the victim of Christ, the Lamb. Ang Arsobispo sa Sugbo nagkanayon nga dili siya mosuporta ug mo-endorsar sa maong matang sa kalihukan sa Semana Santa tungod kay alang kaniya dili kini ang hustong paagi sa pagpakita sa hugot nga pagtuo ngadto sa Ginoo.

“Para nako di maayo nga magpalansang pareha ni Hesus,” matud pa ni Palma atol sa usa ka press conference kagahapon didto sa Archbishop Palace.

“We cannot judge their motivation but this is not the proper way for identifying ourself to Jesus Christ,” matud pa niya. “We must focus on a more spiritual way.”

“We cannot judge their motivation but this is not the proper way for identifying ourself to Jesus Christ,” matud pa niya. “We must focus on a more spiritual way.”

“We don’t encourage those kinds of practices like crucifixion.”

“Holy Week is not a vacation time. I hope everyone will participate in the activity of the Church,” awhag pa sa Arsobispo. (BANATNEWS)
