Hello everyone,

I am an American(kano)and Philippine resident.  I have always been an artist and craftsman; an independently self employed person and an environmentalist.

I do not favor large corporation and in fact I see the economic entity of "corporation" as a crime itself. Because "profit motive" is too strong and is the prime directive over all other factors of life.

A corporation, as a "legal entity" has the same rights as "a person", therefore, "a machine" or u could say a "non human being", now has the same rights as a person.
"The machine" has no heart or no soul,  no consciousness, ..it is programed to care about only one thing.. making money.

In other words I am a firm believer in small business. Therefore I want to take sides with the independent small farming community on Bohol.  However, I am not writing to start a debate about corporations...    Rather, I would  like to know... what is wrong with large scale seaweed farming? What are the downsides and upsides to this industry?

Large agricultural corporations often bring dangerous chemicals to increase profits. Will this happen on Bohol?  Corporations have scientists and of course they have departments that care for the people in that corporation...  but, again,  the problem is that over and above all departments is the prime directive-(profit), and therefore all decisions are always made based of this.

Of course  it will change the face of Bohol. But all the people of Bohol have to understand the environmental issues.  Then the people can organize themselves to make sure Bohol stays as clean and environmentally sustainable for the next century and beyond.

Writing letters to Korea will do nothing...  It is up to the people of Bohol to care for Bohol. I would like to hear a comment from the president of the Philippines.

Again, what is wrong with large scale seaweed farming? What are the downsides and upsides to this industry?

 Best Regards, "BC"

welcome to tb, bc.  how nice of you to come this way.

you know what you speak of, or so i believe.  as an american you must be aware that a bigger part of american hegemony (pax americana, sort of  ;D) is the influence wrought by american multinational corporations.  for every foreign affairs policy issued by the state department, i can't help but imagine what lies beneath the veneer of the usual american national security yarn.  sadly, money talks, anywhere.

kuwait is an example.  after operation desert storm, that small mideast country may as well be now american, what with american multinational corporations privileged with various footholds in almost all industrial sectors, oil foremost of them all.  ooops, sorry i got carried away.  this isn't supposed to be some debate about corporations...

like you, i favor small businesses too.  i learned long ago though that corporations have better protection.  in case of failure, or when push comes to shove, at least one's personal properties cannot be repossessed by authorities.  and corporations are less susceptible to the whims of local political leaders who may be in the position to issue or revoke local business licenses, which small businesses are subject to.

there used to be hundreds of small seaweed farmers organized in bohol, pre-1986 edsa revolt.  (i had an indirect hand in those, framing their monthly status reports, which was part of my job then, though i was not on field and was dependent only on the primary reports submitted by those who were on field.  bureaucracy, you know.)  those seaweed farmers must have gone the way of the marcoses because i haven't heard of their existence to date.  but then again this was long ago.  their story is worth looking into though.  it may answer some of your questions.

good luck.

luoya pud nila pero ngano man lagi pud nga mamugos man ug adto nga dili man diay sakto ang paagi sa paglarga? karon problema na nuon ang nasugatan. imbes pagpangita ug kwarta ang tuyo.

istorya ni nga ma-multiply many times over, with three elements.

una, ang gadamgo nga lami ang abroad mao nga magpailad.  kapila ra man unta pagpangutana sa poea kun legal o illegal ba ang ilang potential employment aron naa silay protection sa gawas.

ikaduha, ang illegal recruiters who aim for fast bucks nga sayod man unta sila nga ang ilang gibuhat human trafficking.

i'm sure that by the term alone, an automotive engineer deals best with vehicles that don't fly. those referred to by the links below your post need aeronautic engineers.

if you have the time and inclination, please go to another thread (name's 3rd anniversary festival) where there's an aircraft design that's the work of an aeronautics genius.  his name is bugsay.

Remember, while you may never aspire to being William McGonagall, just be the worst poet you can be.

William Topaz McGonagall (March 1825 â€" 29 September 1902) was a Scottish weaver and amateur poet and actor.  He won notoriety as an extremely bad poet who exhibited no recognition of or concern for his peers' opinions of his work.  He wrote some 200 poems, including the infamous "Tay Bridge Disaster", which are widely regarded as some of the worst in British history.

McGonagall has been acclaimed as the worst poet in British history.  The chief criticisms of his poetry are that he is deaf to poetic metaphor and unable to scan correctly.  In the hands of lesser artists, this might generate merely dull, uninspiring verse.  However, McGonagall's fame stems from the humorous effects these shortcomings generate.  The inappropriate rhythms, weak vocabulary, and ill-advised imagery combine to make his work amongst the most spontaneously amusing comic poetry in the English language.  However, his is a long tradition of verses written and published about great events and tragedies, and widely circulated among the local population as handbills. this must be a very interesting book:

We all need a bit of poetry in our livesâ€"to inspire and to elevate.  But what happens when poetry goes wrong, and how bad can it get?  Stephen Robins has scoured the anthologies of the world to amass the most astonishing examples of really awful verse.  Each featured poet is introduced with a lightâ€"hearted discussion of his or her life, exploring published works, fame, and reputation.  The result is a treasure trove of poetic disasters that should hold the attention of even the most jaded reader. (from the publisher)

some poems in the book:

The Dentologiaâ€"A Poem on the Diseases of the Teeth (Solyman Brown’s epic poem of 1833)

Lines Written for a Friend on the Death of His Brother, Caused by a Railway Train Running Over Him Whilst He Was in a State of Inebriation (James Henry Powell)

sample lines from Ode on the Mammoth Cheese Weighing over 7,000 Pounds:

We have seen thee, queen of cheese
Lying quietly at your ease
Gently fanned by evening breeze
Thy fair form no flies dare seize.

along the way we learn our lessons in different ways.

(it must have been the hurt and the sense of alienation kay di baya grabe ang latos.)  to make a long story longer, nalooy ko.  bisan diay ug gamay pa ta, kamao na ta makonsensya.  pareha mi nangawat sa akong brother, siya nalatos, ako wa.  unsa ba diay...

resulta:  hangtod karon, protective gihapon ko sa akong duha ka manghod.  kutob sa akong mahimo, kun naa silay kinahanglanon, di ko mobalibad.  it looks like a twisted kind of survivor's guilt; i had it good, i feel they should also have it good.  i don't know if i'm doing it right... :-[

to continue:

7.  back to our home country the next year, we enrolled her at an exclusive sectarian school.  (i was after institutionalized first communion preparation.  besides, the school is my own alma mater.)  she went through the usual entrance exams.  the results:  as a grade 2 entrant, her level for reading and english language was grade 5; she earned passing grades for other subjects except, horrors, math and filipino, where she was below par.

the school's advice was for her to go back to grade 1 because her age anyway was just right for grade 1 (from the vantage point of the month of june, she was to turn seven that october).  i readily agreed because she had no grades for grade 1 anyway.  (though i thought that if she made it in all subjects in that entrance exam, i would have arranged for her to have grades from the distance learning school by asking for special exams for her, if it were possible.)

my conclusions based on this first-hand experience:

1.  distance learning is by itself a great idea.  depending on the family's location and the parents' priorities, it is safer for children and less stressful for them and everyone else in the family.  there will be no harrassed mornings, no bullying either as perpetrator or victim, no excuse letters for absences due to ailments, no fear of vehicular accidents, no calls from the school principal for your child's expulsion or suspension due to bad behavior, and whatever else.

2.  parental supervision is necessary, especially in the case of early graders.  (i wish i knew better.)  had i shown interest in supervising our little daughter's math and filipino lessons, i believe she would have taken interest in these two subjects too.

3.  creativity on the part of parents as regards the homeschooled child's social development is necessary.  (again, i wish i knew better.)  otherwise, homeschooling is better if shared with siblings who can share study or homeschool time together.

4.  homeschooling or distance learning is not for the undisciplined child or uninvolved parents.

5.  accredited distance learning, like a home-based job, is here to stay.  in a world that's becoming more fast-paced than ever, the pursuit of education can be done by letting the school "come" to our home.

6.  it is an option.  lucky us we now have this option.
#42780
to continue:

4.  as our little girl's "de facto teacher", i lost my patience many times, with much regret.

5.  i noticed that without exposure to her age group, she had shied away from children her age but had become very sociable with adults.  (as i myself am not too keen about going out and socializing, i thus denied her the once-a-week chance of meeting and playing with other children with her same kind of schooling, which i was told about.  that would have been her one chance of socializing with children her age.)

6.  she finished most of the required lessons for the year, except math and filipino (for which i, as the "de facto teacher", had the least patience).  she had no virtual exam taken (indeed because we had no internet connection), and thus had no grades.

#42781
may i share my personal experience with distance learning because i chose this for our youngest a couple of years or so ago.  i was afraid she was too small to be tortured with daily trips to and from school in a terribly fast-paced city abroad.  (my apologies.  i won't be naming the city and my daughter, who i enrolled at a cebu-based distance learning school.  she was grade 1 then. :D)

some details of that experience:

1.  all her school materials-- lessons, books, workbooks, all the works of all the required subjects, were complete.  they were all in keeping with the requirements of our department of education.  what was fascinating was that there was method in the lessons.  a willing and open learner can truly learn.  the catch:  i discovered some entries in the language books that were wrong.  minor, i must say, but wrong just the same.  and these were not just typographical errors.

(not the distance learning school's fault; one thing with our education department is that it has its own "corrupt practices", like requiring books written by its own people at the main office or by those close to the department's powers-that-be.  books are big business, needless to say. :()

i backed up her required language books by books published in malaysia, which i found to be better, with zero typographical errors to boot.

2.  my failure was in not having an internet connection at home.  (my husband really had no time to go to the telephone company; i was afraid to go alone and, just my fat luck, i couldn't tell the difference between a wireless connection and my left foot.)

but the lessons were tackled just the same, step by step, though our daughter (that pretty little girl in my avatar, hehe) had no contact with the teachers of the distance learning school.  (again, not the school's fault.)

3.  she wouldn't "go to school" or study her lessons without me. :(

Isles, but of course. As always, your input and your message is well appreciated. An exchange of thoughts, an exchange in appreciation of poetry, and poets (even the not so good; the beginners).

That said, I still encourage the poets out there (the good, and what some would say, 'the bad') to continue to share their written thoughts.

Great poets care not what the critics say, but what the heart speaks.

:)

sadly, the heart of critics can hear keenly while those that don't bother to listen at all may as well be deaf.  but yes, anyone can share their thoughts.  they just shouldn't pass those written thoughts off as poems or themselves as poets. ;D

on bob dylan and his music:

dylan himself had declared that he’s a poet first and a musician second, to which sam leith (a london-based literary editor and columnist) disagrees, pointing out that dylan's own declaration argues against his conclusion.  dylan, says leith, is a genius of a songwriter but not a poet.

what blurs the thin line between poetry and song is their close kinship.  both are founded on language, and both use rhythms.

leith is saying that dylan is a musician who writes the lyrics of his songs with poetic effect, but he's not a poet.  writing with poetic effect is writing with the same imaginative and intense qualities of poems.  it is not the same as writing a poem.

poems should also be experienced visually on a page, unlike music, which is only for the sense of hearing.  poems therefore supply their own music and have a degree of intricacy and meaning that music cannot accommodate, leith says.  songs and music meanwhile have the characteristic rhythmic shifts that a string of words, like poems or lyrics, cannot provide.

the formal differences between poetry and song, the two rhythmic and foremost mediums of language, must therefore be given careful consideration.  promoting dylan’s lyrics as poetry sells them short, and sells poetry short, leith declares.  one can say though that dylan’s lyrics are songs written by a genius of a songwriter who also composed the music for his lyrics.
