Bible Study / Re: Scripture and Tradition

Newman’s argument

He wrote: "It is quite evident that this passage furnishes no argument whatever that the sacred Scripture, without Tradition, is the sole rule of faith; for, although sacred Scripture is profitable for these four ends, still it is not said to be sufficient. The Apostle [Paul] requires the aid of Tradition (2 Thess. 2:15). Moreover, the Apostle here refers to the scriptures which Timothy was taught in his infancy.

"Now, a good part of the New Testament was not written in his boyhood: Some of the Catholic epistles were not written even when Paul wrote this, and none of the books of the New Testament were then placed on the canon of the Scripture books. He refers, then, to the scriptures of the Old Testament, and, if the argument from this passage proved anything, it would prove too much, viz., that the scriptures of the New Testament were not necessary for a rule of faith."

Furthermore, Protestants typically read 2 Timothy 3:16-17 out of context. When read in the context of the surrounding passages, one discovers that Paul’s reference to Scripture is only part of his exhortation that Timothy take as his guide Tradition and Scripture. The two verses immediately before it state: "But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus" (2 Tim. 3:14â€"15).

Paul tells Timothy to continue in what he has learned for two reasons: first, because he knows from whom he has learned itâ€"Paul himselfâ€"and second, because he has been educated in the scriptures. The first of these is a direct appeal to apostolic tradition, the oral teaching which the apostle Paul had given Timothy. So Protestants must take 2 Timothy 3:16-17 out of context to arrive at the theory of sola scriptura. But when the passage is read in context, it becomes clear that it is teaching the importance of apostolic tradition!

The Bible denies that it is sufficient as the complete rule of faith. Paul says that much Christian teaching is to be found in the tradition which is handed down by word of mouth (2 Tim. 2:2). He instructs us to "stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter" (2 Thess. 2:15).

This oral teaching was accepted by Christians, just as they accepted the written teaching that came to them later. Jesus told his disciples: "He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me" (Luke 10:16). The Church, in the persons of the apostles, was given the authority to teach by Christ; the Church would be his representative. He commissioned them, saying, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations" (Matt. 28:19).

And how was this to be done? By preaching, by oral instruction: "So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes by the preaching of Christ" (Rom. 10:17). The Church would always be the living teacher. It is a mistake to limit "Christ’s word" to the written word only or to suggest that all his teachings were reduced to writing. The Bible nowhere supports either notion.

Further, it is clear that the oral teaching of Christ would last until the end of time. "’But the word of the Lord abides for ever.’ That word is the good news which was preached to you" (1 Pet. 1:25). Note that the word has been "preached"â€"that is, communicated orally. This would endure. It would not be
supplanted by a written record like the Bible (supplemented, yes, but not supplanted), and would continue to have its own authority.

This is made clear when the apostle Paul tells Timothy: "[W]hat you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also" (2 Tim. 2:2). Here we see the first few links in the chain of apostolic tradition that has been passed down intact from the apostles to our own day. Paul instructed Timothy to pass on the oral teachings (traditions) that he had received from the apostle. He was to give these to men who would be able to teach others, thus perpetuating the chain. Paul gave this instruction not long before his death (2 Tim. 4:6â€"8), as a reminder to Timothy of how he should conduct his ministry.

What is Tradition?

In this discussion it is important to keep in mind what the Catholic Church means by tradition. The term does not refer to legends or mythological accounts, nor does it encompass transitory customs or practices which may change, as circumstances warrant, such as styles of priestly dress, particular forms of devotion to saints, or even liturgical rubrics. Sacred or apostolic tradition consists of the teachings that the apostles passed on orally through their preaching. These teachings largely (perhaps entirely) overlap with those contained in Scripture, but the mode of their transmission is different.

They have been handed down and entrusted to the Churchs. It is necessary that Christians believe in and follow this tradition as well as the Bible (Luke 10:16). The truth of the faith has been given primarily to the leaders of the Church (Eph. 3:5), who, with Christ, form the foundation of the Church (Eph. 2:20). The Church has been guided by the Holy Spirit, who protects this teaching from corruption (John 14:25-26, 16:13).

Handing on the faith

Paul illustrated what tradition is: "For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures. . . . Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed" (1 Cor. 15:3,11). The apostle praised those who followed Tradition: "I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I have delivered them to you" (1 Cor. 11:2).

The first Christians "devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching" (Acts 2:42) long before there was a New Testament. From the very beginning, the fullness of Christian teaching was found in the Church as the living embodiment of Christ, not in a book. The teaching Church, with its oral, apostolic tradition, was authoritative. Paul himself gives a quotation from Jesus that was handed down orally to him: "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35).

This saying is not recorded in the Gospels and must have been passed on to Paul. Indeed, even the Gospels themselves are oral tradition which has been written down (Luke 1:1â€"4). What’s more, Paul does not quote Jesus only. He also quotes from early Christian hymns, as in Ephesians 5:14. These and other things have been given to Christians "through the Lord Jesus" (1 Thess. 4:2).

Fundamentalists say Jesus condemned tradition. They note that Jesus said, "And why do you transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?" (Matt. 15:3). Paul warned, "See to it that no one makes a prey of you by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ" (Col. 2:8). But these verses merely condemn erroneous human traditions, not truths which were handed down orally and entrusted to the Church by the apostles. These latter truths are part of what is known as apostolic tradition, which is to be distinguished from human traditions or customs.

"Commandments of men"

Consider Matthew 15:6â€"9, which Fundamentalists and Evangelicals often use to defend their position: "So by these traditions of yours you have made God’s laws ineffectual. You hypocrites, it was a true prophecy that Isaiah made of you, when he said, ‘This people does me honor with its lips, but its heart is far from me. Their worship is in vain, for the doctrines they teach are the commandments of men.’" Look closely at what Jesus said.

He was not condemning all traditions. He condemned only those that made God’s word void. In this case, it was a matter of the Pharisees feigning the dedication of their goods to the Temple so they could avoid using them to support their aged parents. By doing this, they dodged the commandment to "Honor your father and your mother" (Ex. 20:12).

Elsewhere, Jesus instructed his followers to abide by traditions that are not contrary to God’s commandments. "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; so practice and observe whatever they tell you, but not what they do; for they preach, but do not practice" (Matt. 23:2â€"3).

What Fundamentalists and Evangelicals often do, unfortunately, is see the word "tradition" in Matthew 15:3 or Colossians 2:8 or elsewhere and conclude that anything termed a "tradition" is to be rejected. They forget that the term is used in a different sense, as in 1 Corinthians 11:2 and 2 Thessalonians 2:15, to describe what should be believed. Jesus did not condemn all traditions; he condemned only erroneous traditions, whether doctrines or practices, that undermined Christian truths. The rest, as the apostles taught, were to be obeyed. Paul commanded the Thessalonians to adhere to all the traditions he had given them, whether oral or written.

The indefectible Church

The task is to determine what constitutes authentic tradition. How can we know which traditions are apostolic and which are merely human? The answer is the same as how we know which scriptures are apostolic and which are merely humanâ€"by listening to the magisterium or teaching authority of Christ’s Church. Without the Catholic Church’s teaching authority, we would not know with certainty which purported books of Scripture are authentic. If the Church revealed to us the canon of Scripture, it can also reveal to us the "canon of Tradition" by establishing which traditions have been passed down from the apostles. After all, Christ promised that the gates of hell would not prevail against the Church (Matt. 16:18) and the New Testament itself declares the Church to be "the pillar and foundation of the truth" (1 Tim. 3:15).

Protestants claim the Bible is the only rule of faith, meaning that it contains all of the material one needs for theology and that this material is sufficiently clear that one does not need apostolic tradition or the Church’s magisterium (teaching authority) to help one understand it. In the Protestant view, the whole of Christian truth is found within the Bible’s pages. Anything extraneous to the Bible is simply non-authoritative, unnecessary, or wrongâ€"and may well hinder one in coming to God.

Catholics, on the other hand, recognize that the Bible does not endorse this view and that, in fact, it is repudiated in Scripture. The true "rule of faith"â€"as expressed in the Bible itselfâ€"is Scripture plus apostolic tradition, as manifested in the living teaching authority of the Catholic Church, to which were entrusted the oral teachings of Jesus and the apostles, along with the authority to interpret Scripture correctly.

In the Second Vatican Council’s document on divine revelation, Dei Verbum (Latin: "The Word of God"), the relationship between Tradition and Scripture is explained: "Hence there exists a close connection and communication between sacred Tradition and sacred Scripture. For both of them, flowing from the same divine wellspring, in a certain way merge into a unity and tend toward the same end. For sacred Scripture is the word of God inasmuch as it is consigned to writing under the inspiration of the divine Spirit. To the successors of the apostles, sacred Tradition hands on in its full purity God’s word, which was entrusted to the apostles by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit.

"Thus, by the light of the Spirit of truth, these successors can in their preaching preserve this word of God faithfully, explain it, and make it more widely known. Consequently it is not from sacred Scripture alone that the Church draws her certainty about everything which has been revealed. Therefore both sacred Tradition and sacred Scripture are to be accepted and venerated with the same devotion and reverence."

But Evangelical and Fundamentalist Protestants, who place their confidence in Martin Luther’s theory of sola scriptura (Latin: "Scripture alone"), will usually argue for their position by citing a couple of key verses. The first is this: "These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name" (John 20:31). The other is this: "All Scripture is
inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be equipped, prepared for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16â€"17). According to these Protestants, these verses demonstrate the reality of sola scriptura (the "Bible only" theory).

Not so, reply Catholics. First, the verse from John refers to the things written in that book (read it with John 20:30, the verse immediately before it to see the context of the statement in question). If this verse proved anything, it would not prove the theory of sola scriptura but that the Gospel of John is sufficient.

Second, the verse from John’s Gospel tells us only that the Bible was composed so we can be helped to believe Jesus is the Messiah. It does not say the Bible is all we need for salvation, much less that the Bible is all we need for theology; nor does it say the Bible is even necessary to believe in Christ. After all, the earliest Christians had no New Testament to which they could appeal; they learned from oral, rather than written, instruction. Until relatively recent times, the Bible was inaccessible to most people, either because they could not read or because the printing press had not been invented. All these people learned from oral instruction, passed down, generation to generation, by the Church.

Much the same can be said about 2 Timothy 3:16-17. To say that all inspired writing "has its uses" is one thing; to say that only inspired writing need be followed is something else. Besides, there is a telling argument against claims of Evangelical and Fundamentalist Protestants. John Henry Newman explained it in an 1884 essay entitled "Inspiration in its Relation to Revelation."

Angie, I think you are referring to State House Bill 334, which gives religious groups a special property tax exemption that is not available to other charitable organizations.

This bill is being protested by the ACLU, actually.

Alaskans are given annual pay for their stay in Alaska for strategic purposes. To maintain the population and settlement of the northern state. An incentive, so to say.

Lyrics:

I'm drunk off your kiss
For another night in a row
This is becoming too routine for me
But I didn't mean to lead you on
And it's alright to pretend that we still talk
It's just for show isn't it
It's my fault that it fell apart

Just maybe you need this
And I didn't mean to lead you on

(chorus)
You were everything I wanted
But I just can't finish what I started
There's no room left here on my back
It was damaged long ago
Though you swear that you are true
I'd still pick my friends over you

My friends over you!

Please tell me everything
That you think that I should know
About all the plans you made
When I was no where to be found
And it's all right to forget that we still talk
It's just for fun isn't it
It's my fault that it fell apart

Just maybe you need this
And I didn't mean to lead you on

(chorus)
You were everything I wanted
But I just can't finish what I started
There's no room left here on my back
It was damaged long ago
Though you swear that you are true
I'd still pick my friends over you.......

My friends over you!

Just maybe you need this,
you need this and I didn't mean to lead you on

(chorus 2x)
You were everything I wanted
But I just can't finish what I started
There's no room left here on my back
It was damaged long ago
Though you swear that you are true
I'd still pick my friends over you

Though I have reservations on President George Bush Jr, I will always respect him for his response to the 911 disaster.

He was able to rally the American people and to put the offense on Al Qaeda.

One thing is clear though, during his administration, he has protected the American Mainland from further terrorist attacks and has increased the security initiatives in the US.

He has, by his policies, will continue to shape American Foreign Policy in the future.
By this, he has increased the size of the military and increased the military defense budget. And our presence in the world will affect this upcoming administration and further administrations for years to come.

History shall be the judge.

The Lyrics:

The best thing about tonight's that we're not fighting
Could it be that we have been this way before?
I know you don't think that I am trying
I know you're wearing thin down to the core

But hold your breath
Because tonight will be the night
That I will fall for you over again
Don't make me change my mind

Or I won't live to see another day
I swear it's true
Because a girl like you's impossible to find
You're impossible to find

This is not what I intended
I always swore to you I'd never fall apart
You always thought that I was stronger
I may have failed, but I have loved you from the start

Ohh, but hold your breath
Because tonight will be the night
That I will fall for you over again
Don't make me change my mind

Or I won't live to see another day
I swear it's true
Because a girl like you's impossible to find
It's impossible

So breathe in so deep
Breathe me in, I'm yours to keep
And hold on to your words 'cause talk is cheap
And remember me tonight when you're asleep

Because tonight will be the night
That I will fall for you over again
Don't make me change my mind

Or I won't live to see another day
I swear it's true
Because a girl like you's impossible to find

Tonight will be the night
That I will fall for you over again
Don't make me change my mind

Or I won't live to see another day
I swear it's true

You're impossible to find

I had a conversation with a fellow medical student who was complaining about how Obama will increase taxes for working folks, and he included in his argument how we would suffer because we would eventually be making over the $250,000 range.

He made a rather rude comment saying that the taxes would inhibit one's ability to buy a Ferrari or a Catermaran Yacht.

I was outraged at this comment. If one is able to afford, with his means, an expensive luxury car or a yacht, then one can easily pay taxes that categorize his salary earnings.

Yes, naturally, if one earns more, then they will pay more taxes. If one earns $500,000 a year, then his or her tax payment will probably be around $100,000 (which is around 20% of his gross earnings).

But that leaves that individual with net earnings of $400,000.

That is equivalent to an excess of $33,333 a month.

That in itself, is already the yearly income of many individuals.

Think about it.

To name a few;

Genghis Khan, the Mongol Emperor who would not stop conquests eventually died on way to battle.

Louis XVI

Napoleon Bonaparte

Adolf Hitler

Francisco Franco

Benito Mussolini

Ferdinand Marcos

Target companies that Obama wants to tax are the Oil Companies as well as large businesses such as Walmart, Target, etc.

Prior to this, these large billion-dollar companies have enjoyed tax-free write offs from the incumbent Bush Administration.

While the American economy struggles and the average American struggles; these companies lavish in their profits. Now they will share their wealth. And pay the due taxes that most of us average-everyday Americans have to.

Ging,

You do have a point about the small businesses, however, the majority of Americans are of the middle class, of the working class. The average American makes no more than $50,000 a year. The middle class, by right, is the workhorse of the United States economy. They bear the brunt of the taxes initiated by government. And they do pay taxes; the point of the tax revamp, is to provide breathing space for the already taxed-out middle class Americans.

Those who earn more than $250,000 a year are now clamoring for no taxes? For over 8 years they have enjoyed the tax breaks of Bush, and these said tax breaks were initiated to support the failed Bush economic policy of 'Trickle Down Effect'.

Preposterous. It has done nothing for our economy; aside from excessive military spending, continued exporting of American Jobs to foreign countries at the EXPENSE of the American Middle Class. Failure.

These so called tax breaks for the wealthy elite have done nothing; clearly it is evident that the main engine of the American economic system is the American Middle Class. You want to stimulate the economy? Give him tax cuts and he will spend it on the market; as the middle class is the target consumer.

If you are an attorney who makes more than $400,000 a year, or a physician/surgeon who earns more than $1,500,000 a year, or a business owner who grosses more than $800,000, then you can afford some taxes.

The middle class is the work horse of this country. The majority of Americans are of the middle class.

Additionally, even if a nurse makes $30-60 an hour, he or she will not hit over $250,000 a year. Perhaps if there are two nurses working together, but individually no. That is the salary range of a starting attending-physician. :)

Ang abortion diri dili lang man kay motikangkang dayun ug mabusog ipa abort. daghan man process before going into that procedure, like sa rape case which pwerteng daghanan diri, most women raped (simbako palayo ug mahitab nako) di jud gusto nga mag samkon sa bata sa nag rape nako! i have to terminate it.

Another example, akong cousin who was taking care of her very sick daughter nga naay leukemia, naburos sha but the doctor adviced her to terminate the baby kay she was very much exposed to her daughters chemo therapy and radiation procedures, and thus can harm the baby, terminate jud oi! Abort with no second thought, it was a MUST!

So kanang mga pataka ug tikangkang unya ma buros, naa ra na nila if gusto ba sila ipadayun or dili they have options, either padayun or adoption...

So everything here when it comes abortion religion doenst anymore matters...

Having an abortion means killing someone who is already alive, because of the inconvenience of their existence.[Killing your unborn child because he maybe at risk of potential radiation exposure is exactly the same as if we killed someone  who is so expose to radiation  - if we said "Well, we don't have the money to take care of this person if something goes wrong in the next year or so, so we'd better kill him, so that we won't have to pay her hospital bills or we wont be expose to this person.
I hope you would agree that it would be monstrous to kill someone because they might get sick in the next nine months.
It's the same thing, because the unborn child is just as much a human being as you are, and as I am.
Its just too bad that there are these rotten rapists about, where do they get the nerve?
Bearing a rapist child is quite a trial I think for the women.Every conception is the will of God no matter rape or incest etc, and I know it's hard on the woman victim. What did this child ever do that it deserves to die? Killing the child is not going to un-rape the mother, nor is it going to punish the father. There is a common emotion that seems to make us think we can undo the original violence by more violence.

Amen.

I am and will always be completely AGAINST abortion.

The Physiology of drug addiction, is that one's body becomes accustomed to the intake of said specific drug. The certain neurotransmitter that the said drug induces is procured; however when one inhibits the intake of said drug, the body runs into conflict.

Pleasure responses in the brain are a type of reward pathway whereby activating dopamine receptors encourages repetition of the responsible behavior. Drug addiction interferes with/over-activates this natural cycle by altering neural function in such a way as to render the brain circuits mediating various behavioral effects of these drugs more, or less, responsive to those effects. Several neurotransmitter and neuropeptide systems have been shown to disrupt brain circuits mediating mood, affecting the underlying addiction process. Beyond the effects on serotonin and norepinephrine levels, which in turn affect mood and the pleasure-response system, drugs also inhibit an individual's decision-making process, implying an inhibition of free will and a hindrance of the I-function.

This is a current Law and Specific Study subset within the field of Medical Psychiatry, actually.

And this said topic is not a 'myth' but is Natural and Scientific Law.

Tita,

Your sorrow is our sorrow. Because we are a family in here.

Knowing Ate Virginia, when I was sad and crying at the death of my friend Rob last year, Ate Virginia told me softly, "It is okay to cry, but you have to let go afterwards."

She would have been reduced to tears in seeing your love for her, Tita.
Confidently I can say that she is in a better place.

I am always here, Tita, if you need anyone to talk to.

Keep that character Bran, sign of a good man.

Mr. Rald,

My mother and father always remind me, even during my graduation, "Ondoy, remember your roots, wherever you go in life, remember that you come from very humble beginnings."

It is the sacrifice of our parents, and our grandparents for our parents. We, the children, are but mere branches of the roots (our grandparents) and the trunk of the tree (our parents).

We must never forget our roots and the soil of our upbringing, because our successes and achievements are due to our family's sacrifices.

I cannot forget because it was my Lolo who carried me with his two hands when I was only a baby. And taught me how to swim in the waters of Valencia when I was but a little boy. I can never forget.

His Blood is My Blood.

I don't see any immediate solution of the situation except total revamp or civil war to revert the true nature of the pyramidal system. But it is so drastic and will inflict more damage than good. The situation here is like a total collapse of the moral fibers of society. Evil deeds are seemingly normalized as if they were acceptable because big crimes are committed by people in power. they are all looking after their own interest, and they know how to circumvent the laws because the laws are seemingly tailored or customized to fit their interest, for their own sake and not for the sake of the whole populace. Enzo, correct me if I'm wrong with my own perception.

The problem with our current political system is that it is flawed to begin with. Rampant corruption from the local level form the barangay to the municipality to the provincial level, the regional level and the national level.

We are stuck, so to say, in the milieu of political stasis of what was set in place to the functioning system. The political conscience resonates of the following, "sacrifice the entire system? too much time has been placed in said system to abandon it. It would look unfavorable in regards to foreign oversight and trade so on and so forth. "

I do not think it wise for a civil war, as it would only invite parasites from abroad to take advantage of the situation (in regards to Chinese surgency, Malaysian and Indonesian encroachment).

The Philippines has yet to be awakened. Sometime in the not-too-distant future, this country will be awakened either by a war that will shake the said foundations of Philippine society as to diffuse sentiments within said population to demand a total change of the political spectrum.

Time and History shall be the final judge. I pray we will still be alive to see the positive changes needed in Philippine Politics.

One thing that I did not agree with McCain and other Republican candidates is that when they were asked about the medical coverage system and what they would do about it; they all answered that they would 'change' it by allowing Americans the right to choose our own medical care providers and allow a full capitalist system to be open for the people.

Full capitalist system?

This basically meant that they would maintain the status quo, regarding the health system.

How can one sleep at night knowing that there are 40 million American CITIZENS that go to bed at night and cannot and will not take their diabetes medication because they cannot afford it? That there are scores of Americans who have hypertensive but cannot afford to even visit a Physician because the cost of visiting a physician is equivalent to 2 or 3 days worth of work in pay?

The cost of medical care here in the United States is quite expensive; a minor orthoscopic procedure can run anywhere around $1000 to $1500 and that is just one procedure. A minor surgery such as repairing of a lacerated wound (superficial wound) can cost an individual anywhere between $5,000 to even $10,000+.

A major surgical procedure such as appendectomy, tonsillectomy, cardiac surgery, orthopedic surgery etc can run anywhere between $50,000 to even $100,000+

That in itself, is more than what many of us make in a year, let alone pay for it.

This is why health care is imperative. Basic health care should be an umbrella for all Americans.
#42778
One good quality about Obama is that he is willing to address the current health care disparity in our country. There are over 40 million Americans that do not have health insurance or just cannot afford the cost of health insurance let alone provide bread and butter for their families.

As one who will enter into the Public Health spectrum and provide care for patients, and treat our fellow American people, I am a proponent of Obama's tenent in providing basic medical coverage to all Americans.

I believe that all Americans, be they of white collar or blue collar; be they of monetary means or not, should be entitled to the same basic medical coverage. In this day of age, the cost of just visiting a Family Physician for basic check up can run anywhere from $250 to $350; depending on the Health Insurance.

With a basic medical system; a people will be given access to primary care; especially important for our senior citizens who need check up on a weekly basis for treatment of their neuropathy and or their gangrinic foot; and or check up to see if they are suffering any infection; as they are already immunosuppressed.

I find Obama's domestic agenda rather inspiring.

America First. Then Worry about the World.

#42780
Not necessarily.

Because the medical profession is not outsourcing jobs. We are not sending nursing positions to the Philippines or building hospitals in the Philippines and India.

Job outsourcing is referring to the positions that are being sent abroad and based abroad. Such as the telecommunication industry, the metallurgical industry, manufacturing so on and so forth.

In regards to Nursing profession and Medical Profession, the United States is importing the foreign candidates to the United States to fill in the ranks of the American Medical System.

By that, Slackware, foreign candidates will assimilated into the American Society, and their families that will come with them. In the end, the United States gains money and resource because:
1) America will receive nurses and physicians to augment its health care
2) These new physicians and nurses will become American Citizens and or Legal Aliens which translates into:
        a) Paying Taxes for Uncle Sammy
        b) Buying homes, and real estate, and resources, which goes back to Uncle Sammy's market
        c) Professional-based

America takes the best of the best from the world. And bars those who are unqualified.

That is how American survives and stays in the top.

Economically, it is sound.
#42781
The power and the responsibility of the President of the Republic does not come at a small price. The burdens, entitled to the position, are paramount and will correlate the individual to the complaints of the people, the politicians, and to military brass.

As the President, one has to sacrifice some ideals and goods in order to acquire and to meet the common good; on a broad basis.

Governing is not free from mistakes; and the decisions one makes as a Leader is not easy, that is why we have elections to elect individuals who will make decisions For Us, the people.

For us to compare Marcos with the standards of the present is in itself out of place. Marcos was a leader during the time of Iron Rule, during the time of the Cold War. Where dictatorships was common, for the good of the free-world. During the time of Marcos, most of the world was ruled by dictators; the Middle East, neighbouring South East Asian countries and South and Central America.

It was the current political phenomenon at the time.

The concept of stability and peace through order. As compared to the alternative, Red Communism, which, according to our own standards and the standards of the United States (then a major strategic ally; as well as today), was borderline blasphemy.

That is why Marcos was good and served his purpose for that particular phase and epoch of Philippine History. Was he free from mistakes? Of course not. But one thing is clear, the country was stable during his presidency. There was no concept of Islamofascism that rocked the entire country or threats of separatists as today.

Why? Because the Philippine Armed Forces, under the Marcosian Administration, was the largest in South East Asia. Any threats to his power and threats to the stability of the entire Republic was crushed outright.

People have to understand that during the time of Marcos, the Philippine Armed Forces was world-renowned. Marcos years was the Golden Years of the AFP.

Yes, possibilities are finite like winding twist and turns. It has to start within ourselves by showing our less fortunate brothers that we care. Unless we do that, the cycle remains.

Remember the great words of encouragement uttered from the lips of JFK? " Ask not what the government can do for you, but ask what you can do for the government." The government he was refering to is the people who put them into power.

JFK made history when he was elected as the first Catholic President of the US. Now, the US is on the treshold of cementing the will for a change by electing Barrak Obama as the 44th US President. He made history as the first black president elected in the US. My hand off to the new president elect! Pangumusta na lang nyo ako dyan sa White House. LOL

A Layman,

You did not answer my question. I understand that it is possible to change, no doubt that is always a possibility.

I, however, was asking how would one change the system? Specifically, what must be addressed and acted on? What specific departments in bureaucracy? In the fiscal arena, etc etc.

Calle... you are right but just let us give Enzo the benefit of the doubt. I guess he was still not around during the Marcosian era. Let us see how Enzo interprets history drawn out from many sources. Could it be twisted come the next generations?

Layman, and Calle,

You two have your points, but there have been papers and thesis projects written on Marcos that portray his duality; his ability to strengthen the nation, yet at the same time to exact emergency powers if necessary.

Call me a traditionalist, but this country will not be ruled under a weak presidency.

This country is marred by regionalist tendencies and disputes since the inception of the First Republic. Was not our very own Andres Bonificio silenced by Aguinaldo? Power, in the end, is what decides the course of the nation.

Idealism, excessive idealism will never work; even Rizal's own utopic idea of a Pan-Filipiniana did not come true. Had Rizal been rusurrected from the grave to see the current state of affairs of his own beloved Filipinas, it would have been enough to send him back to the grave.

Marcos, was what we needed during that time period. Though, I will admit that his policies were not perfect or shy from mistakes, it was necessary for the given epoch.

Whoever comes to the office of President in the Republic of the Philippines, must have the following tenents covered in order to succeed:

1. Backing of the United States
2. Financial changes and loans to continue infrastructural projects
3. Find a way to mitigate the corruption in government.

Though, I am quite leery in this problem being cured in the near distant future. This problem has been a paralytic problem for the Filipinos since the inception of even the 1st Republic.

Of course.

President-Elect Obama, like many Democrats adhere to a protectionist policy, the prime goals of the democrat agenda include:

1. Reclaiming American Jobs
2. Refurbishing the Medical System
3. Energy Policy
4. Military and Foreign Cause

The major problem with some of the Republican tenents is the exporting of American Jobs to foreign countries.

We Americans must adhere to the concept of America First. Everything that effects America, will, by right, influence and affect the world.

A Layman,

How would we be able to change this current situation, realistically speaking, is it even possible?

#42791
Marcos was a great political animal. He is hailed by many American Political Science College Professors as being a 'Perfect Politician'.

Under his administration, he nailed the coffin lid on the MILF and the MNLF as a major threat. In his administration, we saw widepsread growth of agricultural projects, in his administration, there was a silence of the once-pronounced widepsread regional warlordry from province to province.

It was during the Marcosian administration, that the Philippine Armed Forces was at its Zenith.

The Philippine Army swelled at over 250,000 in its ranks; the Philippine Navy and Philippine Air Force was the best of the best in the region and even China dared not to provoke the Philippine Air Force (which then boasted the F-8 and the F-5 Tiger IIs) during the Vietnam era.

Marcos' only enemy was time. And Age. In his later years, he became weak and subjected to the eventual abuses of his political cronies.

Thy Will be done.

Father of the infirm,
Thy Will be done.

Father of the aged,
Thy Will be done.

Father, we adore Thee.
Father, we love Thee.

Father, we thank Thee.
Father, we bless Thee.

In joy and in sorrow,
may we bless Thee.

In sickness and in health,
may we bless Thee.

In prosperity and in adversity,
may we bless Thee.

In consolation and in desolation,
may we bless Thee.

In life and in death,
may we bless Thee.

In time and in eternity,
may we bless Thee.

Father, hear us.
Father, graciously hear us.

Lamb of God, well-beloved Son of the Father,
spare us, O Lord.

Lamb of God, commanding us to be perfect as the Father,
graciously hear us, O Lord.

Lamb of God, Our Mediator with the Father,
have mercy on us.

Let Us Pray.

Our Father Who art in Heaven,
hallowed be Thy Name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Tribute to Orchids (Aya) / Veni, Creator Spiritus
November 05, 2008, 02:49:06 PM
VENI, Creator Spiritus,
mentes tuorum visita,
imple superna gratia
quae tu creasti pectora.

Qui diceris Paraclitus,
altissimi donum Dei,
fons vivus, ignis, caritas,
et spiritalis unctio.

Tu, septiformis munere,
digitus paternae dexterae,
Tu rite promissum Patris,
sermone ditans guttura.

Accende lumen sensibus:
infunde amorem cordibus:
infirma nostri corporis
virtute firmans perpeti.

Hostem repellas longius,
pacemque dones protinus:
ductore sic te praevio
vitemus omne noxium.

Per te sciamus da Patrem,
noscamus atque Filium;
Teque utriusque Spiritum
credamus omni tempore.

Deo Patri sit gloria,
et Filio, qui a mortuis
surrexit, ac Paraclito,
in saeculorum saecula.

Amen.

Obituary / Re: Reflection on Death
November 05, 2008, 02:36:51 PM
Scientific explanation of death is too cold, me-thinks.

I think that is the beauty of Christian Faith is that it provides a basis and an outlet to release your pains and your sufferings. As cold and as absolute is the prospect of death, it is always positive and comforting to know that there is something waiting for us beyond the grave.

What I am trying to point out is the Love of Christ.

There is a specific verse in scripture that clearly emphasizes my point, so let me share it with you;

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Has it been 40 some days?

Truly, I cannot believe it. Time passes too fast, though I can say this confidently that peace will be given to our dearest Virginia.

Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

Darling,

I haven't held you in my arms for over 3 months.

I miss your soft lips, the warmth of your breath, your gentle touch.

Darling, my heart aches being so far away from thee.

Pray, grant me a wish that thou would'st come see-eth me in this warm air. Darling, Darling, Darling, must I call your name for you to answer me?

Beloved, art thou, to me.

Missingly Yours,
