Book Reviews / Swindlers
April 24, 2012, 05:07:36 PM

SWINDLERS is critical reading for anyone investing in Canadian companies. Top forensic accountants Al and Mark Rosen bring their professional expertise and their personal experience to the fore in an exposé of cons, crooks and white collar cheats that • EXPOSES conniving and colluding in the boardrooms across Canada. • EXAMINES the shocking lack of regulatory governance that gives corporate swindlers free rein to manipulate company performance. • REVEALS lax accounting principles in a frighteningly unregulated system. • EXPLAINS how conflicted auditors are led to sign off on questionable financial statements that threaten the bank accounts and retirement funds of some of Canada’s most vulnerable investors. The Rosens argue that all investors must arm themselves or risk getting burned in Canada, a market with inadequate legal protection of their interests. Even when fraudulent practices are uncovered, pursuing and successfully prosecuting white-collar crooks in Canada is prohibitively expensive. The regulatory bodies that should govern corporations and safeguard investors are all too often missing in action or asleep when called to defend the standards they have been empowered to uphold. SWINDLERS is a searing indictment of investment industry regulation in Canada, and a challenge to the status quo. Readers will be alarmed by the current investment environment in Canada and will gain essential insight to safeguard their investments. SWINDLERS distinguishes itself by providing valuable, practicable advice to every reader: from investors, lawyers and bankers, to entrepreneurs and concerned pensioners. If you are depending on your wealth to carry you through retirement, you had better keep your hand on your wallet because your eyes, and your advisors, might deceive you. And if you are cooking the books, beware: the Rosens are on to you. -- http://www.amazon.ca/

CHARLATAN

A charlatan (also called swindler or mountebank) is a person practicing quackery or some similar confidence trick in order to obtain money, fame or other advantages via some form of pretense or deception.

The word comes from French charlatan, a seller of medicines who might advertise his presence with music and an outdoor stage show. The best known of the Parisian charlatans was Tabarin, who set up a stage in the Place Dauphin, Paris in 1618, and whose commedia dell'arte inspired skits and whose farces inspired Molière. The word can also be traced to Spanish; charlatán, an indiscreetly talkative person, a chatterbox. Ultimately, etymologists trace "charlatan" from either the Italian ciarlare, to prattle; or from Cerretano, a resident of Cerreto, a village in Umbria, known for its quacks. --Wiki

Workplace & Productivity / Investment con artists
April 24, 2012, 04:29:55 PM
One of the biggest risks you face is that of fraud, usually through some investment scheme. But you can also be defrauded by seemingly legitimate planning, which turns out to lack substance.

Though scams are funny once you know the inside scoop, the sad fact is that many persons -- including smart businessmen -- and corporations get taken by these scams amazingly often.

Wealth can be lost through the fraud and embezzlement of bad employees, bad faith of insurance companies, or investment fraud by  financial advisors.

Wealth can also be lost because of bad decisions in trusting others. It is imperative that we learn to identify these risks and adopt procedures and practices to avoid them.

Investment con artists are clever and creative. They base their scams on the latest political and scientific developments in the news. For example, a popular investment scam sells stock in a company that is just about to announce a cure for AIDS. Some swindlers focus on specific groups, church groups, blacks, Hispanics, doctors, the elderly, and offer pitches tailor-made to the needs and concerns of these audiences. Still other scams take advantage of economic downturns and employment uncertainty with glowing reports on the earnings of those who buy a franchise or business opportunity. -- http://www.contactpakistan.com/investment/

A New York City investment adviser who swindled clients out of more than $14 million was convicted today on wide-ranging fraud charges.

A Brooklyn federal jury found Joseph Mazella, 52, guilty after a 2 1/2-week trial for running what prosecutors described as an elaborate "Ponzi scheme."

Mazella, founder and president of the Great Atlantic Group Inc., a Staten Island-based real estate and financial consulting company, was convicted of securities fraud, wire fraud, and mail fraud for operating a scheme that victimized senior citizens.

Assistant US Attorneys John Nowak and Winston Paes told the jury how investors were lured by promises of iron-clad returns and interest rates that surpassed what the Blue Chip giants on Wall Street offered.

Unsuspecting investors heard pitches about grandiose real estate development schemes, but perhaps lacked the financial acumen to conduct analytical research into their economic potential.

What clients would have discovered were questionable land and real estate investments in declining Rust Belt cities such as Trenton, NJ, and Utica, NY - as well as a proposed golf course project in upstate New York that never appeared to get off the ground.

A long line of victims - many of them elderly - took the witness stand to recount how their money disappeared, with many lamenting how they lost everything after a lifetime spent scrimping.

Several broke down in tears as they recounted the promises and reassurances given them by Mazella. -- http://www.nypost.com/

Before the Vilmanians and the Noranians clash in another “civil war” now that the idols’ long-dormant rivalry is being revived around the issue of who should be declared a National Artist, I suggest that we should look around first to find out who really deserves it more.

Taking into account not only their body of work but also their great influence and impact on the industry in particular and the public in general, plus of course their longevity in their profession, there are a few others who should be so honored. That’s not to say that Vilma Santos and Nora Aunor don’t deserve it because they do. But it’s not their time yet.

Name three?

One, Eddie Garcia who is an icon who has proven himself in all genres and who has been leading a life both as an artist and as a person devoid of any scandal (he hasn’t been charged for even the slightest offense such as traffic violation, has he?). Eddie is on the same level as those who have been accorded the honor, such as Eddie Romero and Lino Brocka. (FPJ was named National Artist but as far as I know, the honor hasn’t been acknowledged by his family because it was perceived to have been granted by an administration “hostile” to them trying to appease them.)

Two, Rosa Rosal who has amply shown her mettle not only on the screen but also, more so, off it in her capacity as head of the Red Cross. She has distinguished herself on two fronts â€" as an entertainer and as a public servant. I’m sure the public knows her track record on both fields.

Three, but of course, there’s Dolphy the eternal King of Comedy whose contribution to the industry is beyond reproach. As in the cases of Eddie and Rosa, Dolphy is an artist par excellence. In fact, he has become a brand. Say comedy and what name comes to mind? Dolphy! In fact, Sen. Manny Villar has been moving heaven and earth to have Dolphy given the honor, long before another congressman came up with the proposal in favor of Nora…and yet another one for Vilma. But the congressmen are, so to speak, barking at the wrong tree because it’s neither the Legislative Department nor the Executive Department that’s in-charge of screening the nominees but two duly-authorized agencies, The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

Again, before Vilma and Nora, and even before Eddie and Rosa, I second Sen. Villar’s motion to first declare Dolphy a National Artist, considering the Comedy King’s present condition. The honoree should be given the pleasure to savor the honor while he’s still around, don’t you think?

Even Vilma agreed.

Asked by Funfare about her opinion, Vilma texted back , “Okay, of course! I’m 200 percent in favor of Dolphy. He deserves the recognition. It’s long overdue.”

There you are.

In the meantime, the Vilma-Nora rivalry should be swept back to where it has been â€" in memory.

Johor Baru (The Star/ANN) - It was supposed to be the happiest time of her life, but for a 26-year-old factory worker tragedy struck when her husband-to-be was stabbed to death right in front of her a day before their wedding.

The woman, who wanted to be known only as Sharina, watched helplessly as her lover was savagely attacked by their three former housemates, all foreigners, over an incident when one of the men walked into the bathroom when she was taking her shower.

The victim, Indra Asrul, 29, was fatally stabbed in front of a double-storey shophouse in Jalan Dedap 23 at 11.30pm on Saturday.

His grieving bride-to-be claimed that it was their Myanmar housemates, including a couple, who attacked Indra.

According to Sharina, one of the men walked into the bathroom while she was showering a week ago.

"The bathroom door was faulty and could not be locked properly.

"Indra confronted him over this but after the first incident, I suspected that the man took a peep whenever I showered," she said at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital mortuary here yesterday.

She then reported the matter to their landlord who advised them to move out to prevent any trouble.

"We moved out and stayed with my relative temporarily while we looked for a new place to stay as newly-weds.

"We returned to the shophouse on Saturday to get some of our things but before we could do so, the three rushed downstairs and attacked my fiance," she said.

One of the men used a metal rod and repeatedly stabbed Indra in the abdomen, Sharina said, adding that all three then fled.

"I could only hold him while waiting for the ambulance but he died 15 minutes later," she said.

The two were supposed to marry yesterday after planning their wedding for more than a year.

Seri Alam OCPD Supt Roslan Zainuddin said the police were still identifying the suspects.

The Internet has ways of allowing you to make quick and easy money. Check out these 7 easy money making schemes that work for me. With all of the helpful websites out there, as well as telecommuting jobs, you can make it happen. Here are some ways of making quick and easy cash.

1 Find out what people are demanding a lot of. Clothes, electronics, shoes and jewelery are proven things to sell.

2 Get a supplier of the products you need. Wholesalers are all over the place, so finding one should not be too difficult. A good place to inquire is the local or state Chamber of Commerce. They will have listings of wholesalers and businesses in your area.

3 Use eBay or other selling sites to make money online with your products. You can also create your own website and sell products online using your own site.

4 Look for services for which you can telecommute. If you are not much of a sales person, maybe you would be a good virtual assistant, writing for online publications or perhaps online consulting. You can even make money online writing articles for eHow.

5 Write articles for companies or individuals. There are great sites for finding leads, like craigslist.com, writersrow.com, and writersweekly.com. You can write reviews, blogs and articles.

6 Use your current business or position to get more clients. If you work as an electrician or a mortgage broker, you can do side jobs. Look for clients that can use your services. You can post on places like careerbuilder.com, monster.com and craigslist.com. You will need no training for this position since you are already an expert.

7 Become an affiliate. A lot of companies will pay you to help sell and promote their services or products. This is a great way to make easy money, and there are many online ezines and ebooks that have excellent information for making money as an affiliate. These easy money making schemes that work are just a beginning.

This handout photo released by Hendrik Freitag, of Germany's Senckenberg Museum of Zoology shows one of the four new species of freshwater crab found in remote areas of the Palawan island group. The tiny crustaceans were found in streams in remote areas of the Palawan island group, according to a team led by Freitag.

AFP News â€" Sun, Apr 22, 2012

Four new species of freshwater crab, bright purple in colour, have been discovered in the biologically diverse but ecologically-threatened Philippines, the man who found them said Saturday.

The tiny crustaceans burrow under boulders and roots in streams, feeding on dead plants, fruits, carrion and small animals in the water at night, said Hendrik Freitag of Germany's Senckenberg Museum of Zoology.

Found only in small, lowland-forest ecosystems in the Palawan island group, most have purple shells, with claws and legs tipped red.

"It is known that crabs can discriminate colours. Therefore, it seems likely that the colouration has a signal function for the social behaviour, e.g. mating," Freitag told AFP by email on Saturday.

"This could explain why large males of various Insulamon species are more reddish compared to the generally violet females and immature males."

Scientists began extensive investigations of similar freshwater crabs in the area in the late 1980s, when one new species was found -- the Insulamon unicorn, Freitag said.

More field work led Freitag to conclude there were four other unique species.

"Based on available new material, a total of five species are recognised... four of which are new to science," Freitag wrote in the latest edition of the National University of Singapore's Raffles Bulletin of Zoology.

The carapace of the biggest, Insulamon magnum, is just 53 millimetres by 41.8 millimetres while the smallest, Insulamon porculum, measures 33.1 by 25.1 millimetres.

The two other new species were called Insulamon palawense and Insulamon johannchristiani.

The four slightly differ from the first find, and from each other, in the shapes of their body shells, legs, and sex organs.

US-based Conservation International lists the Philippines as one of 17 countries that harbours most of Earth's plant and animal life.

Reptiles, birds or mammals likely prey on the crabs, and it is possible people in remote areas also collect them for food, Freitag said.

However, the main threats are the ongoing forest clearing for farming, mining or home building, since this risks drying up their small habitats and causes water pollution, he said.

"Even if the habitats are not entirely destroyed, the smaller the remaining habitats, the higher the risk of extinction for a species," he said.

MANILA, Philippines - A House of Representatives committee has approved a bill that would impose stiff penalties on married citizens engaging in sexual intercourse with an individual other than his or her legal spouse.

The House Committee on Women and Gender Equality has endorsed for plenary action on House Bill 5734 which also eliminates gender bias in laws penalizing the crimes of adultery and concubinage.

HB 5734, an Act Defining the Crime of Sexual Infidelity, is a consolidation of five bills filed by Deputy Speaker Ma. Isabelle Climaco; Susan Yap (LP, Tarlac); Josephine Veronique Lacson Noel (LP, Malabon-Navotas); Teddy Brawner Baguilat (LP, Ifugao); and Linabelle Ruth Villarica (LP, Bulacan).

The bill defines sexual infidelity as an act committed by any legally married person who shall have sexual intercourse with another person other than his or her legal spouse.

Lacson-Noel said HB 5734 does not exempt a person whose marriage has been subsequently declared void.

However, the crime cannot be prosecuted by anybody except upon the complaint of the offended spouse.

''The bill aims to protect the institution of marriage,'' the neophyte solon said.

Lacson-Noel said the bill also eliminates the disparity between the penalties imposed by existing laws on the crimes of concubinage and adultery.

Under Article 333 of the Revised Penal Code, adultery is committed by a married woman who engages in sexual intercourse with a man not her husband. Offenders are punishable by prision correccional, a maximum jail term of six years.

On the other hand, Article 333 of RPC metes out on the offender a penalty of destierro or banishment from the community where the couple lives for a certain period of time.

HB 5734 treats the two crimes as the same acts that constitute sexual infidelity.

A penalty of prision correccional in its maximum period will be imposed upon a person who is found guilty of keeping a ''paramour in the conjugal dwelling.''

On the other hand, if cohabitation takes place in a location other than the house of the legally married couple, the penalty will be prision correccional in its medium period.

Lawmakers proposed that an offended party can no longer file charges against the alleged offender if the former is also guilty of sexual infidelity or had abandoned the guilty spouse without just cause for more than one year.

MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang said yesterday it is open to the proposal of Pampanga Rep. Carmelo Lazatin to invite Walt Disney Company to build a Disneyland theme park in Clark, Pampanga.

Lazatin wrote Robert Iger, chairman and chief executive of Walt Disney, asking him to consider Clark as the location for their next Walt Disney Park.

He said Clark’s 4,400-hectare main zone and 27,600-hectare subzone would be perfect for a new park.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said there is no reason to block such proposal.

“That has to be studied... Of course, we get the general idea because it will bring in business and promote tourism. That’s what the President (Aquino) always says,” Valte said.

“It has many multiplier effects, but we will have to study it first...You remember what President Aquino said during the energy summit (in Davao City last week)? If it’s a reasonable proposal, there’s no reason why we should not look into it,” Valte said.

Lazatin told Walt Disney the tax-free privileges given to locators at the Clark Freeport Zone made it an attractive destination for investors.

He also cited Clark International Airport that is expected to serve at least 1.6 million passengers this year.

He said the airport would make it easier for tourists to enjoy the amenities and entertainment Disneyland is famous for without the hassles of long travel.

Apart from the airport, which will offer convenience to visitors, hotel accommodations will not be a problem as Clark has the best hotels where visitors can enjoy Filipino hospitality, he said.

“With our population of more than 90 million Filipinos, a Disneyland theme park in the Philippines could be a major income generating site for your company,” he said, adding that some four million tourists visit the country every year.
