if it's just the size of the picture, i wouldn't call it downgraded.  if she were made to look ten years older and fatter, that would be another story.

no, but the egos of the couple and their families could be, which can be prohibitively expensive.

my own wedding is still a conversation piece for my nieces.  unbelievably cheap, they say.  naturally.  my own dress cost only 95 pesos. (lol!)  it was an off-the-rack thing that no one wanted because it was so small.  but it fitted me to a t because i was only 87 pounds then.

not that my ego is zilch; it's just that i've always hated being a star in my own production, especially one that i can direct.  in other words, i never liked the idea of walking down the aisle, oogled at by strangers.  i took only three steps, from the first pew of the small chapel to the altar.  there was no one except immediate family members and two close friends.  reception cost:  2,500 pesos.  the only fly in the ointment was the groom's choice of drinks, a bottle each of hennessy and dom perignon.  but that's another story.  besides, that was his money.

i don't think i'm less married now just because my wedding wasn't anyone's dream wedding but my own.

your info on the liquor sale ban at fuente caught my attention, ben.  i remember (being required to join the sinulog by our office ages ago) when we had to hunker down to protect our heads and run for our lives, in full sinulog regalia, when those beer bottles started flying in our direction.  thrown by drunks, of course, who had the habit of cruising fuente and gen. maxilom ave.  i hated the sinulog since then.

hehe, tide is u.s.-based while ariel is u.k.-based, but both are manufactured by procter and gamble.  i couldn't tell the difference in their efficiency, but price matters.  in europe, i used ariel.  in the philippines, my preferences are tide and surf.  the best, though, is amway's laundry detergent.  too bad it's not readily available in supermarkets.

hehe.  my "belief" is in keeping with the fact that people can convey harmful thoughts.  these harmful thoughts, being energies, can manifest themselves as real physical harm.

let me tell you what i know (or was told) about the role of diamonds in warding off evil.  like crystals (and surely you know how some people take crystals, which are used for healing, protection, etc.), a diamond's role in warding off evil is supposedly to absorb the harm, thus diverting it away from the person.  hardy as a diamond is, it's supposed to crack if such an eventuality happens.  lol.

glad you mentioned the word "choice", honestjeenn.  lucky you for starting early in this latest networking scheme.  call it by any name you want, be it multi-level marketing or what-have-you, it's still a pyramid scheme.  those who came ahead, the uplines, will get more if they recruit more downlines who may get less if they don't get to recruit more, until there's no one left to recruit except house pets, all the way down to house mites.

by the way, if the moneyed pastor wishes to share his wealth, why would he choose a complicated way of doing it, with products to sell besides?  haven't we heard enough of the rich who always wish to get richer?

Philippine Business News / Re: Hubert Webb is Acquitted
January 03, 2011, 01:25:56 AM
Excerpts from G.R. No. 176864 of the Supreme Court, December 14, 2010 (re the acquittal of Webb, et al.):

On motion for reconsideration by the accused, the Court of Appeals' Special Division of five members voted three against two to deny the motion, hence, the present appeal.

On April 20, 2010, as a result of its initial deliberation in this case, the Court issued a Resolution granting the request of Webb to submit for DNA analysis the semen specimen taken from Carmela’s cadaver, which specimen was then believed still under the safekeeping of the NBI.  The Court granted the request pursuant to Section 4 of the Rule on DNA Evidence to give the accused and the prosecution access to scientific evidence that they might want to avail themselves of, leading to a correct decision in the case.

Unfortunately, on April 27, 2010 the NBI informed the Court that it no longer has custody of the specimen, the same having been turned over to the trial court.  The trial record shows, however, that the specimen was not among the object evidence that the prosecution offered in evidence in the case.

This outcome prompted accused Webb to file an urgent motion to acquit on the ground that the government’s failure to preserve such vital evidence has resulted in the denial of his right to due process.

CONCLUSION

In our criminal justice system, what is important is not whether the court entertains doubts about the innocence of the accused since an open mind is willing to explore all possibilities, but whether it entertains a reasonable, lingering doubt as to his guilt.  For it would be a serious mistake to send an innocent man to jail where such kind of doubt hangs on to one’s inner being, like a piece of meat lodged immovable between teeth.

Will the Court send the accused to spend the rest of their lives in prison on the testimony of an NBI asset who proposed to her handlers that she take the role of the witness to the Vizconde massacre that she could not produce?

WHEREFORE, the Court REVERSES and SETS ASIDE the Decision dated December 15, 2005 and Resolution dated January 26, 2007 of the Court of Appeals in CA-G.R. CR-H.C. 00336 and ACQUITS accused-appellants Hubert Jeffrey P. Webb, Antonio Lejano, Michael A. Gatchalian, Hospicio Fernandez, Miguel Rodriguez, Peter Estrada and Gerardo Biong of the crimes of which they were charged for failure of the prosecution to prove their guilt beyond reasonable doubt.  They are ordered immediately RELEASED from detention unless they are confined for another lawful cause.

for the massacre's sheer tragedy, i wouldn't dare trade places with mr lauro vizconde.  the most hardhearted of human beings would find in his heart a corner for sympathy for what he went through.  but what of the law, and justice?

those justices at the supreme court aren't idiots.  it is their duty to look at evidences and legal proceedings coldly.  it is not as if they would lose their jobs if they displease prominent people.  hubert webb and co. were sentenced by the lower courts when freddie webb was still a senator.  if such government position had any bearing on the supreme court's decision, why should it be now when freddie webb is no longer a senator?

most of us may know enough the gripping details of the vizconde massacre as fanned by the media as much as we know where our sympathies lie.  however, it may help us gain perspective if we go through the details of the supreme court's decision.  (G.R. No. 176864 dated December 14, 2010; it's available on the internet.)

justice, after all, is not only for the victims but also for the accused.

what i know of this nano car is that you get it cheap at its most basic, meaning that you still have to add many parts that the cost of materials and labor adds up and raises the total price of the car.  can you imagine buying a car without rearview and side mirrors?  that's what a nano car is, from what i've read during its launching.

what i will never understand is why oil prices shoot up when the dollar-peso exchange rate shoots up and why they still shoot up when the dollar-peso exchange rate goes down.  in the philippines, prices of oil and commodities continue to rise like the miniskirt.  it's strange that other countries, with government intervention, are capable of markedly lowering prices of oil and commodities, including house rental, during certain circumstances.

I realized in life a situation arrives when you have no choice but to do what you believe is right!

I am taking care of my estranged husband! He was in the Philippines starting a new life when all of a sudden he was diagnosed with pancreatic disorders at St. Luke's Medical Ctr. He has to come home for more examinations only to find out he got stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

thanks for the warning, vrglguaps.  how tragic it is that we get this feeling of being had right in our own country.  i hope it's more imagination than real, though most of us honestly believe that it's more real than not.

i always give myself a week to adjust again, to the noise, especially.  as for opportunistic people, whew, luckily, i don't have relatives or neighbors who would hover once someone from "abroad" comes around.  i have the crazy feeling they'd rather keep their distance from me.  perhaps it's the way i look (draculina, hahaha!) or that nothing surprises them anymore.

as for opportunistic strangers on the road, well, they have it coming.  just yesterday, when someone on the street called for me to take a taxi (there are pesky dispatchers here, right?), i put him off by staring him down and saying, "marunong akong tumawag ng taxi".  boy, did he get away from me soon after.

i told myself last may when i read your post that i will do all i can to visit these children when i get to cebu.  now's my chance.  a christmas gift of groceries and perhaps some cash would be fine, but i also want to give their names to dswd and even go as far as giving a lift to their case officer who may be assigned to these children.  and i will follow things up.  please help me bring my plan to fruition.  this may be the only good thing that i can do this christmas.  thank you very much.

Happy Thanksgiving sa mga US-based Tubaganons. Good morning to all!
I have a rough night, only now that thew news that someone in my family has pancreatic cancer just sank in. It hurts really hard when you know that days are numbered, it hurt even more to see the people you love slowly lying in bed.

PANCREATIC.. wish it could have been different kind at least for the hope. At 6% survival rate, I am hoping against hope.

i'm very sorry, wolfie.  a confrontation with the finality of a loved one's mortality is never easy.  my prayers for your family's strength.

do i love the sight of snowfall, vrglguaps.

just came from the balcony of a 19th floor hotel room in manila to look at the horizon of this topsy-turvy place.  i can never get used to the abuse of car horns in this teeming metropolis.  i wonder if i would ever want to stay here again.  but then it's as if i have a choice.  just now i can hardly wait to get to cebu and bohol.

to be honest, this insults the idea of creative writing.  10 to 15 news items a day, fine.  even 20 is believable if there are enough events to report.  but creative writing?  i dare the most prolific of creative writers to produce 10 to 15 pieces a day.  that means 10 to 15 poems or short stories and the like, the kind that even the production of one had to be agonized over.  never mind the remuneration.

Weird and Extreme / Strange Sexual Partners of Men
November 22, 2010, 11:43:43 PM
another thread had spread the yarn about a dog and a household help.  some extremely unusual cases are more mystifying though.  examples:

Shelton man charged in sex assault on horse

A city man is accused of sexually assaulting a horse on a neighbor’s property, police said.

At about 6:15 p.m. Monday, Joan Flannery of 8 Partridge Lane told police that a man on her property appeared to be touching a horse in a sexual manner and the horse appeared to be in pain.

Police said a Flannery family member reported seeing a man putting his hand and arm inside the horse’s vagina in a repetitive motion.

Officers found a man, identified as Marian Wegiel, 63, of 11 Partridge Lane, in the corral.

According to Lt. Robert Kozlowsky, Wegiel told police he was comforting the horses after they had been scared by a loud noise.

Wegiel allegedly stated he may have inadvertently put his fingers inside one of the horses. There were three horses in the corral, but only the one female appeared to have been touched, police said.

According to Detective Ben Trabka, Wegiel and the owners of the horse aren’t friends, and Wegiel had no reason to be on the property. Police said they don’t know if this has ever happened before.

“They never caught him doing it before,” Trabka said. “The resident came out and saw it Monday evening. It certainly is bizarre, a strange deviant sexual behavior.”

The Flannerys contacted a veterinarian, who examined the horses. Police said the horse didn’t appear to be injured. (New Haven Register, Oct. 10, 2010)

The Pumpkin and the Man

A man is driving home late one night and is feeling very horny. As he is passing a pumpkin patch, his mind starts to wander. He thinks to himself, you know a pumpkin is soft and squishy inside, and there is no one around here for miles. He pulls over to the side of the road, picks out a nice juicy looking pumpkin, cuts the appropriate size hole in it, and begins to screw the pumpkin.

After a while he is really into it, and doesn't notice the police car pulling up. The cop walks over and says, "Excuse me sir, but do you realize that you are screwing a pumpkin?"

The man looks at the cop in complete horror, thinks fast and says, "A pumpkin? Is it midnight already?"

Analysis:  Even when passed off as a "news" story, it's easy enough to tell that this apocryphal tale of sexual embarrassment had humbler beginnings as a plain old dirty joke. It's the clever punchline that gives it away, as can be more readily seen in this bare-bones version found on a humor website.

That noted, I'm obliged to confirm that in 2002 a disconcertingly similar incident made newspaper headlines in Warren, Michigan when a local man was convicted of traipsing around nude in his back yard and, in full view of his neighbors, "using a pumpkin to sexually gratify himself." He was sentenced to 90 days in jail for indecent exposure. (urbanlegends.about.com, circulated on the internet since 1998)

Romancing a Toyota

Popping down the street to pick up some groceries may seem like a regular chore, but imagine finding a man trying to hump a Toyota SUV!

A drunk man was caught having sex with an SUV that was parked on a main road. The man, who has not been named, was seen with his pants down and getting it on with the front end of the Toyota 4X4. After a short time finding that the Toyota wasn’t responding to his advances, police arrived on the scene, and of course being the 21st century, the whole thing was caught on video and posted to the internet.
