a good day to you then, zeffa.  if it assures you any, i myself am not offended (i cannot speak for the other tb readers though i'm pretty sure they have stronger reasons for not taking offense).  it's just that like you, i have my own ideas about faith and the church that i felt were worth expressing as you've expressed yours.

while religion and politics as topics for discussion tend to be endless (and sometimes divisive), we discuss these not to convince each other to one's side but only to try to clear up some misconceptions, real or otherwise.

meanwhile, religion is not necessarily the cause of today's wars.  politics, maybe.  but religion?  i cannot imagine countries going to war because one has a prophet named christ and the other is named mohammed.  these days, chances are countries go to war over territories or ideological differences or commercial interests.  that's equally sad, indeed.

Ha ha!! Now you have me thinking...That I like!!
Ive never really contemplated this subject in great depth but am willing to form an opinion based on this conversation!! (Although I cant stay too long..Lots to do today)

Of course!! How could it survive otherwise?

??? now i cannot even deign to use my brain or whatever is left of it...

let me repeat, are you really saying that when religion is dying, kleptocracy dies along with it?  "if it could not survive otherwise", are you saying then that it is kleptocracy that makes religion live?  something's askew here somewhere...

Quote
Seems to me,it requires countries with high poverty levels to survive(A bit like the Church) so I was wrong when I said "predominantly Catholic countries",sorry about that!...

the temporal church does not and could not live on poverty.  like any organization, it cannot survive on nothing.  it would do well to distinguish the temporal and the spiritual sides of the church as we see it.  meanwhile, faith makes poverty bearable, whatever one's faith is.

The R.P has a 70% church attendance right? Now thats a huge mandate of support by the people which no Government could ignore(or ignore at their peril).. How much political power and influence that represents in real terms is anyone's guess..

percentaging in church attendance is at best an educated estimate.  attendance does not a religion make.  now i'm wondering how a church's political influence has gotten into our discussion...

They are not on the list because Religion is dying in Europe and the Churches influence on Government is probably non existent these days..
This is bared out by average Euro Church attendances..France for example has an attendance of only 16%!! The UK and Spain only 25% compared to around 70% in the Philippines.

this is now beginning to defy logic... are you saying then that when religion is 'dying' kleptocracy dies along with it?  such seems to be the trend of thought that you are conveying.

as for those percentages, yes, church attendance may be dwindling in europe (and in other western  countries, though how the percentages were arrived at aside from being mere estimates is something else.  i still have to go to a church that checks attendance; i haven't gone to an iglesia ni cristo church that does) but church attendance or lack of it has nothing to do with one's personal relationship with his god and the form of worship that he takes.  neither has it got anything to do with kleptocracy.

now, if we bother to go by your logic, what, by the way, is the percentage of church attendance in muslim indonesia that's on top of the list of kleptocracy?

The only preacher that I tend to listen to and trust these days is Eli Sorriano.

sorry, but i haven't heard the name.  does he come from a country with a predominantly catholic population and a history of kleptocracy?

Kleptocracy is truly a great word..Put simply a very descriptive word that quickly illustrates the situation in most predominantly Catholic countries IMO..

ahh, here's pairing a rotten apple with a rotten tomato and calling the partnership a santol.

what the study of the top ten kleptocrats concluded was that most of them are from countries that have undergone colonization.  colonization was blamed, not religion.  note that the number one on the list has the world's biggest muslim population.

as for predominantly catholic countries, if i go by your claim, note too that france, poland and ireland, among others, are not on the list.  these are countries whose catholics are of a bigger percentage to their population compared to ours.

greed has nothing to do with religion.  for as long as man is overcome by greed, he will always get what he doesn't deserve.

Of course, this was not a "news story" until many years later which of course was strenuously denied by the Vatican!!
How they managed to cover it up for so long is pretty scary when you think about it.
When the evidence and testimonials were heard, the Catholic church`s position after much deliberation and many more years suddenly collapsed and the surviving kids finally received an apology and given $10.000 compensation each.

there's a difference between "strenuously denied" and "keeping quiet".  the former is to be confronted with real evidence and to continue to insist, by officially announcing, that no such things happened.  the latter is not to say anything and to discretely wait as to how such accusations will pan out, with foolproof evidence and all.  even hardened criminals and repeat offenders deserve their day in court, right?

the quiet part is understandable.  even families who have an accused criminal from among them would never shout 'hallelujah' out to the world.  so would organizations.  so why not the church?  what we don't know is that the church may have made its own quiet investigations into those accusations, searching for proofs.  after which, as you say, the church made reparations.

Islander..
I have a deep respect for believers in any faith that are genuine and have good hearts..As I said,I believe in God but do have many issues with some of the men and women that preach to us in his name..(certainly not all)

One of my best friends and his sister were left in the temporary care of the Catholic church. He was 7 years old.
They were both abducted along with hundreds of other children and sent to different parts of the world (usually ,Asia,Africa and Australia)and used as cheap labour to build local churches etc....
My friend and his sister were separated and sent to different parts of Australia. He never saw his sister again.
He was systematically abused by the priest and some of the older boys for many years.

zeffa,

and i respect your respect for such believers.  too bad about your issues, especially that they came too close to home for comfort as the tragedy happened to that best friend of yours.

different issues, as we may all know, are stranger than fiction.  we must not lose sight of the fact though that the church, catholic or not, are peopled by humans with their own frailties.  we cannot blame the church for what its human members do or not do.

we must not also lose sight of the fact that it is foolhardy to scalp a whole clan just because one cousin has lice teeming on her head, or to throw a whole basket of tomatoes because one tomato is rotten.

the church, our faith, stands; its people come and go.

respect!

Transparency International ranking of alleged kleptocrats:

In early 2004, the anti-corruption Germany-based NGO Transparency International released a list of what it believes to be the ten most self-enriching leaders in recent years.

In order of amount allegedly stolen (in USD), they are:

1. Former Indonesian President Suharto ($15 billion â€" $35 billion)
2. Former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos ($5 billion â€" $10 billion)
3. Former Zairian President Mobutu Sese Seko ($5 billion)
4. Former Nigerian President Sani Abacha ($2 billion â€" $5 billion)
5. Former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milošević ($1 billion)
6. Former Haitian President Jean-Claude Duvalier ($300 million â€" $800 million)
7. Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori ($600 million)
8. Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Pavlo Lazarenko ($114 million â€" $200 million)
9. Former Nicaraguan President Arnoldo Alemán ($100 million)
10. Former Philippine President Joseph Estrada ($78 million â€" $80 million)

i did a little research for you, zef.

Kleptocracy, alternatively cleptocracy or kleptarchy, from Ancient Greek: κλέπÏ,,ηÏ, (thief) and κράÏ,,οÏ, (rule), is a term applied to a government subject to control fraud that takes advantage of governmental corruption to extend the personal wealth and political power of government officials and the ruling class (collectively, kleptocrats), via the embezzlement of state funds at the expense of the wider population, sometimes without even the pretense of honest service. The term means "rule by thieves". Not an "official" form of government (such as democracy, republic, monarchy, theocracy) the term is a pejorative for governments perceived to have a particularly severe and systemic problem with the selfish misappropriation of public funds by those in power. (from Wiki)

Ha ha ha ... my nephew will have the last laugh once these ignoramuses will realize there is no sense comparing BISU to VSU.

our family was cebu-based, yet a brother of mine chose to study in bilar.  he was given options to study in up-los banos, visca-baybay, or cmu-bukidnon, but he chose bilar, and felt good about himself.

the problem with some people is that they equate a place, a city for that matter, with quality.  we know it isn't always so.  anyone can bloom where he is rooted if he chooses to.

Maintaining the status quo also equitably distributes development opportunities to the countryside. For me this is most important.

this is de rigueur in most well-planned cities and towns in more advanced countries.  concentration in one area of almost everything--- from government administration to commercial and educational opportunities, are seen to cause congestion, shortage of access to utilities and services, and an increase in crime rate, among others.

if only melchor painted the walls instead of himself.  besides, i'm inclined to believe he's more of a musician and acrobat than a michelangelo type. ;D

la paz batchoy is truly slurp.  you know why this is terrific?  aside from the lengthy slow boiling of three kinds of meat (poulty, pork, beef) and bones, the innards that are added are cut with scissors, and very often the fingernails of the chef who cuts these are included in the mix. ;D

something tragicomic happened yesterday.

the efficient house painter who wanted to do something in his vacant time while waiting for the foreman decided to paint the first coating of latex on our cat room walls.  he didn't coordinate with anyone, much less with me, so he didn't know that once the painting work and tiling are done to the cat room, all the cats will have to be transferred to the living room.

the painter was shaking when he reported that our two orange cats now had painted bodies.  melchor had it worse; his ears had stiffened with latex.  it turned out that he rolled on the paint pan and played with the brush.  my stomach gnarled despite the painter's apologies and assurances that latex is not poisonous.

it took 2 hours to clean melchor and midnight and dawn visits to the cat room to check for any changes in his overall health.  i geared up for an emergency.  he's all right, whew, but my stomach is still tight with pain.  :(

ka cute and clean kaayo tan-awon na miming, ms isle!

before it started to get so cold here, we trapped Mocha Jr.  He or she is now being "tamed" as she/he is considered a wild cat.  Mocha Jr.  looks exactly like my beloved old Mocha but this one is feisty.  Mocha Jr. doesn't meow at all, just growl.

today, we got another cutie cat with a very striking orange color.  she is so scared right now but she should be okay soon.  i will post pictures of my two cutie cats soon.

congratulations, grazie!  what a great way to start your new year!

hehe, i was never much of a joiner of anything, preferring much to be on the outside looking in.  (joining tb is already a major decision for me.)  ;D

want to know more?  now i'm surprised that moncado had such academic achievements!  let us grant that his various degrees were exotic, but he was educated nevertheless.  it may surprise you to know that the colony's square is peppered with slabs on which are written or carved "excerpts" from various philippine-american agreements, already outdated even at the time of my visit.  funnier still, these contained only the end parts of those agreements, starting with the "wherefore" clause.  they didn't make any sense.  my conclusion:  probably his followers were mostly illiterate at the time.  (sorry.)

Whether he was a hero, prophet or charlatan, or all of the above, or none of the above, or any combination thereof, or whatnot, Moncado certainly was one of the most colorful figures in Philippine history.

truly colorful; his followers revere him like he's the messiah.  one cannot be sure if the manner in which his followers worship him and his memory was according to his instructions or to his followers' own interpretation.  his widow, who gave us a tour of their place at the time of our visit, was garbed in a 19th century western dress.  she came on strong and was obviously the current leader then.

i gathered that one of the widow's primary duties, aside from keeping the community going, is the see to it that moncado's remains continue to be well-preserved through annual re-embalming.  it was placed in a glass casket, on display inside a small 'chapel'.  (i dared not look.)

the 'chapel' was on a promontory a walking distance away from the colony's main square.  from there one can see cebu's northwestern coast and islets.  it was a beautiful sight, which to my mind was broken only by the words of one of their members (understandably called 'moncadista') who said without batting an eyelash that from that vantage they can see UFOs almost every night.  ???

It can certainly be called that. If I recall correctly, ang ilang kan-on hilaw ra nga vegetables. No meat. No fish (bisan sashimi di pwede, he he). I read somewhere recently, though, nga gitugotan na sila ron pagluto sa ilang pagkaon, although the conservatives in their midst still hold on to the original commandment.

i can believe this.  the seniors among them (they must have been centenarians!) were very pale and strangely smooth-skinned.  i attributed it to their vegetarian diet and the colony's clean cold air.  that was some 20 years ago, when curiosity got the better of me and i went to their place with some friends.
