MANILA, Philippines - The jobless husband of a domestic helper working in Hong Kong was arrested yesterday following a complaint filed by his 10-year-old daughter for allegedly raping her last week in their house in Valenzuela City.

Police said the suspect, 36, a resident of Barangay Ugong, was charged with rape before the court yesterday.

The victim’s grandmother accompanied the girl in filing the complaint. She said she learned of the rape, which happened last April 30, from the victim herself when she noticed the girl was behaving strangely.

The suspect, when asked why he raped his own daughter, told police he missed his wife and was drunk when he committed the crime.

The suspect has been detained while the victim has been turned over to the care of her grandmother.

MANILA, Philippines -- She was hailed as the greatest Filipino woman painter today, whose rare exhibitions were always awaited in art circles. Last Friday, Anita Magsaysay-Ho, 97, died much the same way she lived her life: peacefully, humbly, gently.

A genteel lady raised amid great culture and wealth, Anita was married to shipping magnate Robert Ho of Hong Kong. In 1999, she set a record high for a living Filipino artist when her work “In the Marketplace” was sold for the equivalent of P15 million at Christie’s Singapore.

But her daughter Doris Magsaysay-Ho says, “Humility was the best lesson she taught us. She never measured her success in material things. She gave us inner confidence as she lived as a gentle spirit who felt her life was an offering to God.”

In one of her poems â€" yes, she also loved doing poetry â€" Anita wrote: “Lord, how can I depict Thy work, without Thy hand in mine?”

Her works celebrated Filipino women â€" mostly peasants with white kerchiefs over their heads â€" winnowing rice, harvesting fruits, selling fish, with their lowered eyelids half-shut, their lips demurely hinting a smile. Anita once explained: “In my works, I always celebrate the women of the Philippines. I regard them with deep admiration and they continue to inspire me â€" their movements and gestures, their expressions of happiness and frustration, their diligence and shortcomings, their joy of living. I know very well the strength, hard work and quiet dignity of Philippine women, for after all, I am one of them.”

Her art was totally Filipino in inspiration, quite ironic for an artist who moved homes a total of 45 times as she and her husband established residence in Hong Kong, Washington D.C., Sao Paolo, Tokyo, Vancouver, Montreal and Manila.

The imagery of Anita’s art obviously came from the rustic barrios of Zambales where she reveled in summer sojourns. The Magsaysays come from the 19th century mestizo-principalia class of Zambales. Her mother, Amalia Leonor Corpus, was born in San Antonio, while her father Ambrosio Magsaysay hailed from San Marcelino. (Anita’s uncle, Exequiel, was the father of President Ramon Magsaysay).

Anita was born on May 25, 1914 in the Paco mansion of her grand uncle Don Fernando Teodoro Rafael Yangco, a shipping tycoon and philanthropist who served as the Philippine Resident Commissioner in Washington D.C.

She attended the UP School of Fine Arts at the age of 13, accompanied by a nanny. Among her schoolmates were Botong Francisco, Vicente Manansala, Galo Ocampo and Cesar Legaspi. The school head, Fabian de la Rosa, suggested that Anita pursue art studies in Europe. Her landscape teacher was Fernando Amorsolo, but she learned drawing from the maestro’s brother Pablo Amorsolo. The socially sheltered Anita also had a private tutor, Ireneo Miranda, the leading political cartoonist of the era.

Labeled as “the female Amorsolo,” Anita was hailed as both conservative and modernistic in her style. The young artist also enrolled in the Atelier of Modern Art founded by Victorio Edades â€" who proudly declared himself as the avant garde in art â€" along with Galo Ocampo and Diosdado Lorenzo. She even worked with Edades doing murals for a mansion of President Manuel Quezon in Pasay. She was fittingly named one of the 13 Moderns in Philippine art.

It was after World War II when Anita was sent by her parents to study at the Art Students League of New York, and later to the Cranbook Academy of Art. In New York, she met Robert Ho, the son of a shipping tycoon. The two fell in love and were married in 1947 and have five children â€" Helen (married to Robbie Delgado), Linda (married to Gage McAfee), Doris (formerly married to Jessie Maxwell), Robert Alexander and Steven (married to Jaymie Glasmann) â€" who gave them 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

In between having babies, Anita used the egg tempera technique she learned from Zoltan Sepeshy, “because it was taking me too long to mix the oils.”

The Crucible Gallery owner Sari Ortiga says that Anita’s exhibit in 2002 in his gallery was probably her biggest, even if she had only eight works then. “It took her a long time to finish one painting because she worked on each canvas layer after layer, waiting for each layer to dry up, in the traditional way. She did no shortcuts. There was one year she finished only two paintings, and she was working every day at that.”

Daughter Doris says her mother painted diligently from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. till the end. Herself a gifted artist (her brother Robert likewise inherited the artistic genes), Doris and her mother spent weekends together, doing portraits of their relatives and friends.

For years, they did their weekend routine â€" until 2009 when Anita suffered a stroke. For a while, Anita stopped talking. But one day, she called her husband and talked for one minute just to tell him: “Robert, you are the only man I ever loved in my life.” And then she never talked again.

This story made Ortiga recall that time when his wife Nancy Ortiga and Pia Young (wife of The Crucible Gallery co-owner Randy Young, one of Anita’s favorite friends in the art circle) watched the movie “Unfaithful” starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane. Anita remarked, referring to Diane’s role as the unfaithful wife: “How can a man accept back such a woman?”

“Tita Anita is one of the sweetest and most humble persons I have ever met. Never wanting recognition, she was happy to let her paintings speak for her,” says Randy Young.

Anita Magsaysay-Ho’s art speaks of an artist’s passionate love of country, deeply inspired by its women. She received countless awards in her lifetime. She was once named one of the six greatest artists of the Philippines â€" along with Vicente Manansala, Arturo Luz, H.R. Ocampo, Carlos V. Francisco and Fernando Zobel. Those honors â€" and her record-breaking sales in world galleries â€" spoke for this woman who spoke gently and humbly.

Shipworms are not worms at all, but rather a group of unusual saltwater clams with long, soft, naked bodies; they are marine bivalve molluscs in the family Teredinidae. They are notorious for boring into (and commonly eventually destroying) wood that is immersed in sea water, including such structures as wooden piers, docks and ships; they drill passages by means of a pair of very small shells borne at one end, with which they rasp their way through. Sometimes called "termites of the sea", they also are known by the common name "Teredo worms" or simply "teredo", from the Greek language "Ï,,ερηδων", via Latin. Eventually biologists adopted the common name Teredo as the name for the best-known genus. --Wiki

Tamilok on its natural habitat- rotting mangrove trees. Photo by Rita W.

When I asked my local friend on what I should try in Palawan, without thinking twice he said, I should try “tamilok.” Almost everyone I met would ask, “Natikman mo na ba yung tamilok?” (Have you tried tamilok). Curious of what tamilok is I said to myself, “I have to taste that before I leave,” not knowing how it looked like.

Ala-Fear Factor Challenge
The night before my flight back to Manila, the owner of Balinsasayaw restaurant surprised me when she placed a platito of tamilok on our table alongside the garlic crabs and shrimps. She said, “Ubusin nyo yan ha” (Finish all of it). I sigh, what a quirky challenge! -- http://journeyingjames.com/

In Palawan and Aklan in the Philippines, the shipworm is called tamilok and is eaten as a delicacy there. It is prepared as kinilawâ€"that is, raw (cleaned) but marinaded with vinegar or lime juice, chopped chili peppers and onions, a process very similar to ceviche. The taste of the flesh has been compared to a wide variety of foods, from milk to oysters. --Wiki

Veloso is running for mayor as he bleeds in merely pondering on the years wasted by an administration that champions both empty and double talks.

He said city hall needs a leader who knows what to do, can focus on it and make it done to prove he is worth the mandate.

Cabrera, RP envoy to Myanmar, passes away
April 9, 2009 1:27pm

MANILA, Philippines - Former Press Secretary Noel Cabrera, the Philippine Ambassador to Myanmar, passed away Thursday morning, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said. He was 64.

In a text message to reporters, DFA spokesman Eduardo Malaya said Cabrera passed away in Manila after a "brief illness," which the department has yet to confirm.

"Ambassador Cabrera last served as Philippine Ambassador to Myanmar, where he was at the forefront of the Philippines' constructive engagement with the military-led state and the cultivation of friendship with the Myanmarese people," Malaya said.

Cabrera previously served as Philippine Ambassador to Romania. Prior to that, he was press secretary in the Arroyo administration.

"DFA Secretary Alberto G. Romulo and the men and women of the foreign service convey their deepest condolences and prayers to Cecilia and the family of Ambassador Cabrera," Malaya said.

"He represented and served his country and people with competence and distinction," added the DFA spokesman.

Before joining government service, Cabrera was a full-time newspaperman.

Cabrera was Editor in Chief and Chief Operating Officer of the defunct Manila Chronicle from l993 to 1998. After his stint with the Manila Chronicle, he was appointed Press Undersecretary at the Office of the Press Secretary in Malacañang in l998.

Cabrera started his journalism career as special events reporter of the Philippines Daily Express where he later became a deskman, columnist, chief editorial writer, editorial page editor and assistant managing editor. He worked with the Express from l976 to l986.

Shortly before the first EDSA People Power in l986, he became the managing editor of the newly-revived Manila Times. After his brief stint at the Manila Times, he moved to the Manila Chronicle on the same year where he became the paper’s news editor and later as managing editor.

From l989 to l993, Cabrera worked as columnist and editorial writer of the Manila Times, Philippines Newsday and The Daily Globe.

Cabrera finished his AB in Journalism at the University of the Philippines in l969. He took his elementary and high school at the Ateneo de Manila.

The Press Secretary was a grantee of the National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for Journalists at the University of Michigan, USA, l982-l983.

He was also a participant of the Nihon Shimbun Kyokai fellowship for journalists in Japan, in l980 as a fellow of the Confederation of Asean Journalists.

Cabrera was a Catholic Mass Media Awardee in l979.

A native of Taal, Batangas, Cabrera is married to Cecilia Maigue and has four children. - GMANews.TV

EARIST official slain in ambush
Philstar â€" Sun, May 13, 2012

Manila, Philippines -  Two unidentified gunmen ambushed the executive vice president of Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology (EARIST) in Sta. Mesa, Manila Friday night, a few minutes after the victim left the school, according to the Manila Police District (MPD).

Noel Cabrera, 46, succumbed to several gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the De Ocampo Memorial Medical Center (DOMMC).

Initial investigation had it that Cabrera was behind the wheel of his Toyota Avanza, with EARIST employee Rolando Peraldo in the front passenger seat. They came out of EARIST’s back gate along Valencia street and were moving toward Ramon Magsaysay Boulevard when the attack happened.

Peraldo said Cabrera was talking to his wife on his mobile phone when shots rang from behind.

He said the victim embraced him and uttered, “Roland, may tama ako (I’ve been hit).” He added that the car continued running, as Cabrera slumped in the driver’s seat, and eventually hit the center island of Ramon Magsaysay Boulevard.

Peraldo said he got out of the car and shouted for help until a Metro Manila Development Authority enforcer approached them and drove the victim to the DOMMC.

Police Officer 3 Alonzo Layugan, Manila Police District homicide investigator, told The STAR they interviewed the victim’s wife and some bystanders who witnessed the incident, but no one wanted to talk.

He said two men on a motorcycle tailed the victim’s car after it left the school gate. The two men were wearing helmets.

Layugan said the police is still trying to establish the motive of the ambush and are still trying to locate a tricycle driver and his passengers, who were behind the victim’s car when the shooting occurred.

vive la différence!  curious cat that i am, here's what i understood of what it takes to go from one level to the next in terms of number of posts:

student to intern:             500
intern to expert:               500
expert to luminary:        3,000
luminary to guru:           3,000
guru to master:            13,000
master to legend:         20,000
legend to source:          30,000
source to force:            30,000
force to vox populi:       50,000
vox populi to scientist:  50,000

what follows is unimaginable.   so far, i can take only the legend that is lord hubag. ;D

Hmm, in other sites, the higher the rank, the wider the gap...

“This apparent expression of brotherhood between the Reservists and the TaRSIERs will not only serve as an example of cooperation among Boholanos but also as a wake-up call for everyone signifying mutual aid and teamwork among nations to protect Mother Earth from falling into the abyss of destruction and nothingness,” Chatto emotionally stated; a most meaningful statement collaborated by all present during the meeting.

Way to go!  8)

Which date? April 5, 15,232 (transit of Venus and the moon) or July 26, 69,163 (transit of Venus and Mercury)?
