Lim said in the Philippines, crocodiles have been unfairly compared to pot-bellied policemen and corrupt officials in government.

“We would prefer if there is a positive outlook for them,” she said.

“This (comparison) is an insult for them because a crocodile, once its belly is full, would no longer eat. But corrupt officials are never full. This is a wrong comparison.”

Mabuwaya Foundation director Merlijn van Weerd recalled that Lacoste is committed to help finance the reward system and entice communities to beef up the crocodile conservation program â€" which started last year â€" for five years.

They are also receiving financial assistance from some zoos all over the world. Lacoste is only one of their benefactors.

Van Weerd said the Mabuwaya Foundation works with the local community on how to deal with the crocodiles that do not live in a farm, but stay in the wild.

“What we do with the Lacoste program is that we give rewards to communities that actually conserve the program,” he said.

”They receive P1,000 per crocodile per year. They use the money to develop their barangays. These are among the poorest of the villages.”

The additional income is helpful to a barangay, Van Weerd said.

During the Lacoste visit, they handed over a certificate worth P42,500 to a village.

Van Weerd said residents would not only protect the Philippine crocodiles but also the wetlands.

“So indirectly, they profit from the crocodiles,” he said

Van Weerd, a volunteer designated director of Mabuwaya Foundation, is a biologist from the Netherlands. He has been in the country since 1999.

In Luzon, it is only in Isabela where the Philippine crocodile can be found, Van Weerd said. (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)

Lacoste partners with Mabuwaya

Meanwhile, Lacoste chairman Michel Lacoste said he would continue to support conservation efforts for the Philippine crocodile in Isabela through the non-government organization Mabuwaya Foundation.

The 68-year-old chairman of one of the biggest clothing brands in the world arrived in the country and spent two days with the foundation’s community in Isabela province.

“The purpose of my visit was to get knowledge about the Philippine Crocodile conservation project which is managed by the Mabuwaya Foundation in Isabela,” he said.

Lacoste said he would leave it up to the NGO on how best to deal with the critically endangered species in the Philippines.

“My life is connected with Lacoste brand and although I have a great degree of love for and interest in the crocodile... I don’t know much about the scientific part of it, I learned a lot of things on what was being done and it was very impressive,” he said.

Lacoste’s interest in crocodiles started when his father Rene Lacoste, a French tennis player, made a friendly bet during a tennis match.

Rene was reportedly promised a crocodile skin suitcase if he won the match. The nickname “crocodile” stuck to Rene.

Now, the Lacoste company, through the Fonds de Dotation pour la Biodiversite (FDB), is financially supporting five projects worldwide, including the one on the Philippine crocodile.

For all these projects, over the last three years they have already spent 1.5 million euros.

Lacoste said they would be renewing their commitment “Save Your Logo.”

“We have not decided on the right amount to go forward,” he said.

“Save your Logo” is FDB’s innovative project to protect biodiversity.

Lacoste is scheduled to leave the country today.

The CSG is holding its 21st Working Meeting in the country with the theme “Crocodilians in a Changing World.”

This is the first time that the Philippines is hosting the event that the Crocodylus Porosus Philippines, Inc., National Museum and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources have organized.

Of the 23 living crocodile species in the world under the order crocodylia, 11 are listed as threatened species in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species.

The Philippine crocodile is considered to be “critically endangered,” and if nothing is done to change the situation, it could become extinct in 20 years.

Lim said communities should be informed that instead of senselessly killing crocodiles, it would be better to capitalize on their value.

Crocodiles are an indicator of a healthy ecosystem because fish proliferate where crocodiles are present, she added. Lim said crocodiles provide “healthy nutrient cycling.”

“Recognize their sanctuaries or where they lay their eggs,” she said. “Do not go there because most likely, the female crocodiles are also there. It is important that the people know their biology so we would know when we should avoid them.”

Webb said the state of crocodiles in the Philippines is not very good because of the big human population and limited land area.

“You (also) can’t have wildlife in abundance and people in poverty,” Webb said. “So you have to strike a balance. It is hard to make crocodile conservation in the Philippines.”

Webb said the various crocodile farming and conservation groups are doing their share in increasing their numbers.

“You just have to be very careful, very innovative and very strategic such as generating a tourist industry based on crocodiles,” he said.

“You have to change the crocodiles from a debit to an asset. You have to apply different strategy in different places. You cannot just use one strategy to fix it all.”

A crocodile for an ambassador?

The director of the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) believes a crocodile caught in Bunawan, Agusan del Sur can be given the title “Ambassador for Crocodile Conservation,” especially if it would be officially declared the world’s largest crocodile in captivity.

PAWB director Theresa Mundita Lim said yesterday she would be meeting with Bunawan Mayor Edwin Elorde to talk about “Lolong,” the 21 feet and one inch (6.4-meter) saltwater crocodile.

“Lolong is like the ‘Pacquiao’ of crocodiles,” she added.

Lolong could be used to help support the cause of the Crocodile Specialist Group (CSG), Lim said.

However, Dr. Grahamme Webb, CSG chairman, said Lolong would have better use in the crocodile conservation efforts in the Philippines.

“The Philippines should use that crocodile, (but) not be used by the world,” he said. “It is in the Philippines, it’s (in a) uniquely Philippine situation and they should use it.”

A lot of people are interested in crocodiles and special things can be done with them, he said.

15 August 2011: Senator Aquilino 'Koko' Pimentel III takes his oath of office, with his family in his side, before Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile at the Senate Building in Pasay City, south of Manila.

By Shielo Mendoza | Yahoo! Southeast Asia Newsroom â€" 7 hours ago

Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Tuesday revealed that he and his wife for 12 years have separated.

“I confirm my separation from my wife of close to 12 years, Jewel May Lobaton. We have been living separately since November 2011,” Pimentel said in a statement.

Lobaton is a former Binibining Pilipinas titleholder who represented the country in the Miss Universe pageant in 1998.

“This may well be the most difficult public pronouncement I will ever be making in my entire life. And painful too, as every separation involves a certain degree of pain,” the senator said.

He added that he tried to resolve their differences for the sake of their two children but to no avail.

“Now that we have separated, my main concern is the welfare of the boys.

Hence, I am asking for prayers from my supporters and the understanding of our people whom I serve. I want to assure them that this situation will not affect the discharge of my duties as a senator,” Pimentel said.

Last month, Senator Francis Escudero revealed he and wife Tintin have called it quits.

Philippines goes after sea turtle restaurants
AFP News â€" Mon, May 21, 2012

The Philippines on Monday said it would form a special task force to go after restaurants selling the meat of protected sea turtles.

The eight-member team was created after news reports revealed the proliferation of roadside restaurants in the central island of Cebu serving dishes made from the government-protected marine animals.

"The task force is created to pursue and initiate an aggressive protection and conservation movement of the endangered marine turtles which are now on the verge of total depletion," regional environment chief Maximo Dichoso said.

The team was instructed to investigate the trading, hunting, sale, and killing of marine turtles in the area, the environment department said.

News reports said numerous small eateries in a coastal district of Cebu City were serving dishes made from sea turtle.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama conceded that the practice had been going on for a long time but there had been no concerted effort to stop it.

Those caught trading, hunting, collecting or killing sea turtles, which are considered an endangered species, face a fine of 100,000 pesos ($2,350) and one year in jail.

The discovery of Chinese fishermen catching sea turtles and other protected marine species in the South China Sea last month triggered a high-profile maritime standoff between Philippine and Chinese ships.

'Pawikan' meat sold in Cebu barangay
By Nestor B. Ramirez, VERA Files
Posted at 05/20/2012 11:43 PM | Updated as of 05/20/2012 11:43 PM

CEBU CITYâ€"Business is brisk, judging from the throng of people and cars parked outside this makeshift eatery in Pasil, a shoreline barangay.

The customers, some in long sleeves and tie, do not mind the heat and the dishevelled slum area. They are here for one reason: To eat their favorite stewed dish of sea turtle or pawikan, an endangered species whose hunting, sale and killing have been banned by law since 2001.

The Wildlife Conservation Act, or Republic Act No. 9147, penalizes violators with a fine of up to P100,000 and imprisonment of up to one year.

The pawikan appears on the list of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), having become endangered because of poaching, slaughter, blast fishing, illegal trade and pollution.

A signatory of the CITES, the Philippines, through the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, has implemented the Pawikan Conservation Project nationwide.

Animal welfare groups, meanwhile, consider the whole month of May as the Month of the Ocean, which promotes conservation and protection of sea creatures.

But Basilisa Piaquinto, head of the Protected Area and Wildlife (PAW) of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) here, expressed helplessness over the sale of the contraband in Pasil.

Vendors, mostly ambulant, have wised up and now sell pawikan meat already cut up, making it difficult for authorities to tell it apart from other meat, she said. And eateries are temporary structures that are easy to dismantle, allowing them to elude authorities.

Piaquinto said the vendors themselves know they are violating the law, but the demand for pawikan meat has kept the trade going.

Often eaten with corn grits and sold for P60 a bowl, the stewed pawikan is commonly believed to be an aphrodisiac, explaining its popularity among men.

Study finds coffee lovers may live longer
AFP Relax â€" 21 hours ago

If you love your morning coffee, a new study finds that your daily habit could protect your health. In a study by researchers from the National Cancer Institute in the US, older adults who drank coffee -- caffeinated or decaffeinated -- had a lower risk of death overall than others who did not drink coffee.

The java drinkers -- especially those who drank three or more cups a day -- were less likely to die from a number of illnesses, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and infections -- although researchers found no link with cancer. Results of the study were published on Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Head researcher Neal Freedman and his colleagues examined the association between coffee drinking and risk of death in 400,000 American men and women ages 50 to 71 who participated in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study.

"The mechanism by which coffee protects against risk of death -- if indeed the finding reflects a causal relationship -- is not clear, because coffee contains more than 1,000 compounds that might potentially affect health," said Freedman. "The most studied compound is caffeine, although our findings were similar in those who reported the majority of their coffee intake to be caffeinated or decaffeinated."

Still, while more research needs to be done to fully understand the protective components of coffee, Freedman adds that "these results do provide some reassurance that coffee drinking does not adversely affect health."

Coffee has also been shown to improve brain function in mice studies, with researchers probing the possibility of using coffee as a treatment for people with Alzheimer's disease. Researchers in Portugal also recently found that the consumption of caffeine could protect against memory loss associated with advanced diabetes.

Still health experts don't recommend overdoing your coffee intake. The US-based Mayo Clinic suggests no more than two to four cups a day, since more than that can cause insomnia, upset stomach, and anxiety.

MANILA, Philippines â€" A janitress of the Manila International Airport Authority received a P50,000 reward from the Federation of Filipino Chinese Associations Foundations Incorporated (FFCAFI) for returning the money she found at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1.

Manny Dy, the honorary president of FFCAFI, said the board of directors decided to reward 32-year-old Mary Jennifer Doroga for her exemplary honesty.

Doroga found a transparent plastic pouch containing foreign currencies amounting to an estimated P1.2 million last April 26.

Doroga immediately coordinated with airport officials and turned over the pouch to the lost and found section of the airport.

The janitress, who has been working at the airport for 7 years, cried upon receiving the cheque.

She said she intends to use the money for her family’s personal needs.

NAIA Terminal 1 manager Dante Basanta and senior assistant general manager Vicente Guerzon were present when the group handed the reward money to Doroga.

Are vegetarian men pansies? And meat-eating men more masculine?

Those are the suggestions of a new study which found a clear association between the way people view rib-and-steak kind of men, versus vegetarian, soy milk kind of guys.

In a study published this week in the Journal of Consumer Research, a team of US researchers examined people's word association between certain foods and the way consumers rate the ‘masculinity' of things like meat versus milk or vegetables.

In an "I Tarzan, you Jane," kind of result, researchers found that people tend to associate meat eaters as more masculine than vegetarians and vegans, both in the US and Britain.

After examining 23 languages that use gendered pronouns, researchers also discovered that meat-related metaphors were also more closely associated to the male gender.

"To the strong, traditional, macho, bicep-flexing, All-American male, red meat is a strong, traditional, macho, bicep-flexing, All-American food," the authors wrote. "Soy is not. To eat it, they would have to give up a food they saw as strong and powerful like themselves for a food they saw as weak and wimpy."

Meanwhile, in order to soften the tough sell of vegetarian -- and more heart-healthy -- products to men, researchers suggest reshaping soy burgers to make them resemble beef, and giving them grill marks to make them more appealing.

NASA's Kepler Mission Confirms Its First Planet in Habitable Zone of Sun-like Star
12.05.11

NASA's Kepler mission has confirmed its first planet in the "habitable zone," the region where liquid water could exist on a planet’s surface. Kepler also has discovered more than 1,000 new planet candidates, nearly doubling its previously known count. Ten of these candidates are near-Earth-size and orbit in the habitable zone of their host star. Candidates require follow-up observations to verify they are actual planets.

The newly confirmed planet, Kepler-22b, is the smallest yet found to orbit in the middle of the habitable zone of a star similar to our sun. The planet is about 2.4 times the radius of Earth. Scientists don't yet know if Kepler-22b has a predominantly rocky, gaseous or liquid composition, but its discovery is a step closer to finding Earth-like planets.

Previous research hinted at the existence of near-Earth-size planets in habitable zones, but clear confirmation proved elusive. Two other small planets orbiting stars smaller and cooler than our sun recently were confirmed on the very edges of the habitable zone, with orbits more closely resembling those of Venus and Mars.

"This is a major milestone on the road to finding Earth's twin," said Douglas Hudgins, Kepler program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Kepler's results continue to demonstrate the importance of NASA's science missions, which aim to answer some of the biggest questions about our place in the universe."

Kepler discovers planets and planet candidates by measuring dips in the brightness of more than 150,000 stars to search for planets that cross in front, or "transit," the stars. Kepler requires at least three transits to verify a signal as a planet.

"Fortune smiled upon us with the detection of this planet," said William Borucki, Kepler principal investigator at NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif., who led the team that discovered Kepler-22b. "The first transit was captured just three days after we declared the spacecraft operationally ready. We witnessed the defining third transit over the 2010 holiday season."

The Kepler science team uses ground-based telescopes and the Spitzer Space Telescope to review observations on planet candidates the spacecraft finds. The star field that Kepler observes in the constellations Cygnus and Lyra can only be seen from ground-based observatories in spring through early fall. The data from these other observations help determine which candidates can be validated as planets.

Kepler-22b is located 600 light-years away. While the planet is larger than Earth, its orbit of 290 days around a sun-like star resembles that of our world. The planet's host star belongs to the same class as our sun, called G-type, although it is slightly smaller and cooler.

Of the 54 habitable zone planet candidates reported in February 2011, Kepler-22b is the first to be confirmed. This milestone will be published in The Astrophysical Journal.

The Kepler team is hosting its inaugural science conference at Ames Dec. 5-9, announcing 1,094 new planet candidate discoveries. Since the last catalog was released in February, the number of planet candidates identified by Kepler has increased by 89 percent and now totals 2,326. Of these, 207 are approximately Earth-size, 680 are super Earth-size, 1,181 are Neptune-size, 203 are Jupiter-size and 55 are larger than Jupiter.

The findings, based on observations conducted May 2009 to September 2010, show a dramatic increase in the numbers of smaller-size planet candidates.

Kepler observed many large planets in small orbits early in its mission, which were reflected in the February data release. Having had more time to observe three transits of planets with longer orbital periods, the new data suggest that planets one to four times the size of Earth may be abundant in the galaxy.

The number of Earth-size and super Earth-size candidates has increased by more than 200 and 140 percent since February, respectively.

There are 48 planet candidates in their star's habitable zone. While this is a decrease from the 54 reported in February, the Kepler team has applied a stricter definition of what constitutes a habitable zone in the new catalog, to account for the warming effect of atmospheres, which would move the zone away from the star, out to longer orbital periods.

"The tremendous growth in the number of Earth-size candidates tells us that we're honing in on the planets Kepler was designed to detect: those that are not only Earth-size, but also are potentially habitable," said Natalie Batalha, Kepler deputy science team lead at San Jose State University in San Jose, Calif. "The more data we collect, the keener our eye for finding the smallest planets out at longer orbital periods."

NASA's Ames Research Center manages Kepler's ground system development, mission operations and science data analysis. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., managed Kepler mission development.

Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp. in Boulder, Colo., developed the Kepler flight system and supports mission operations with the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

The Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore archives, hosts and distributes the Kepler science data. Kepler is NASA's 10th Discovery Mission and is funded by NASA's Science Mission Directorate at the agency's headquarters. -- http://www.nasa.gov/
