“Let see the scatter”
LABTIK Ni Alan Domingo (Banat) | Updated February 22, 2016 - 12:00am

Hmm, I suppose the "black money" mentioned here is good enough to avert financial crises but is not good enough to bring about economic prosperity.

Brazil’s real gained along with emerging-market currencies as commodities rebounded and traders bet China will support its equity market, offsetting concern at home over a worsening recession and deteriorating budget.

The real rose 1.8 percent to 3.9495 per dollar at 12:43 p.m. in Sao Paulo. A gauge of 20 emerging-market currencies climbed 0.5 percent as raw materials from crude to iron ore advanced. Speculation that China, Brazil’s top trading partner, will step up efforts to reinvigorate its stock market after a key official was replaced at the Asian nation’s securities regulator supported markets the world over on Monday.

Brazil’s real is tracking global swings after domestic turmoil turned it into the worst-performing major currency in 2015. Still, ongoing uncertainty over the economic outlook coupled with bets the government is losing its fight to rein in a budget deficit has made the real the world’s most volatile major currency. One-month implied volatility rose 0.3 percentage point to 20.23 percent.

"The improving risk sentiment and the recovery in commodity prices helped the Brazilian real to extend gains on Monday," said Arnaud Masset, an analyst at Swissquote Bank SA in Gland, Switzerland. "Traders have put the domestic situation on the back-burner to focus on the global situation."

The outlook for Brazil’s economy worsened as analysts in a central bank survey published Monday said the nation is headed for a deeper recession. Economists in the survey expect gross domestic product to shrink 3.4 percent in 2016 and inflation to end the year at 7.62 percent.

The government has struggled to cut expenditures and on Friday said it would freeze 23.4 billion reais ($5.9 billion) in discretionary spending to help shrink the budget deficit. Rousseff’s administration reduced its estimate for a so-called primary budget deficit equal to 0.97 percent of gross domestic product if fiscal revenue falls short of expectations, Finance Minister Nelson Barbosa said Friday.

That would mark the third consecutive year that the government posts a primary gap, meaning a deficit even before interest payments are taken into account.

Brazilian police carried out another series of search and arrest warrants on Monday related to the Carwash scheme of alleged kickbacks at state-run oil company Petrobras. Police searched the offices of construction and engineering conglomerate Odebrecht SA and the apartment of Joao Santana, the media strategist behind the presidential campaigns of President Dilma Rousseff and former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, inspectors said. Prosecutors are investigating if possible kickbacks from Petrobras were used to pay Santana, for whom an arrest warrant was issued, they said in a statement.

Swap rates on the contract maturing in January 2017, a gauge of expectations for Brazil’s interest rates, dropped 0.055 percentage point to 14.18 percent.

There is no question that India has the most positive economic story on the planet.

Buoyed by increased manufacturing output, India's economy grew by 7.4% in the third quarter of 2015, the fastest growth of any major country in the world.

But there is a dark side to India's success, says one of the country's most eminent economists.

Kaushik Basu, the chief economist of the World Bank and former chief economic adviser to the Indian government, says the nation's tradition of petty corruption helped India avoid the worst of the banking crisis that has crippled most other large economies in the last few years.

It is an extraordinary claim for such an influential figure to make but, as he says in his new book, An Economist in the Real World, "economics is not a moral subject".

His argument is that the pervasive use of "black money" - illegal cash, hidden from the tax authorities - created a bulwark against a crisis in the banking sector.

MONEYWATCH February 22, 2016, 6:00 AM

For months, most economists and pundits have confidently predicted that the U.S. would escape the storm being whipped up by the ailing global economy. President Obama, too, couldn't resist a little chest-thumping recently after federal data showed that the nation's unemployment rate had fallen in January to 4.9 percent.

Such optimism looks increasingly misplaced. A raft of economic signals shows that slowing growth overseas, held back by China's ongoing deceleration, is already taking a toll on the American economy and threatening to send the recovery into reverse. Private forecasters are paring their 2016 estimates for U.S. growth to around 2 percent, down from the already modest 2.4 percent rate of expansion over the previous two years. And that assumes everything goes right.

If things go wrong, even those tepid projections are likely to slip. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has already downgraded its forecast this year, leading the group's chief economist to say that "global growth prospects have practically flat-lined." The downturn is evident not only in Asia, but also in Europe and Latin America, where Brazil and Venezuela are already in recession and Argentina is close on their heels.

Although there is never an opportune time for a recession, the current moment poses singular challenges for the U.S. The economy has failed to regain the momentum it had before the 2008 financial crisis, while questions abound regarding the country's long-term prospects. Some prominent economists argue that we may be in store for years of "secular stagnation," potentially widening the cracks in the economy caused by inequality and eroding Americans' standard of living.

That unsettling sense of stasis, especially with tens of millions of Americans already just getting by, coincides with what is emerging as the most serious threat to global expansion in decades. This much is clear: The challenges facing China and other developing countries are, in an economically interconnected age, also our own. If the storm does come, national borders are unlikely to offer shelter.

BAKERSFIELDâ€"Several men in dark suits and dark glasses with earpieces harassed the Inquirer and ABS-CBN reporters covering an Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) church dedication service here.

As this correspondent and ABS-CBN reporter Steve Angeles waited on a public walkway in front of the INC compound at Mount Vernon in this city, the men kept staring at us.

INC Executive Minister Eduardo V. Manalo, who is in the United States for a series of pastoral visits, was leading the dedication service.

Angeles heard some of them remark, “biased ABS-CBN” and “boycott ABS-CBN.”

“A group of them followed us as we made our way to my car,” Angeles told this reporter.

This correspondent asked them, “Why are you following us?” The three men did not respond, instead one of them told the others, “Why are we following them daw.”

In Manila, INC spokesperson Edwil Zabala issued a statement saying: “We are thankful that another house of worship in California was added to the Iglesia Ni Cristo for our brethren in the USA. We are also thankful that Brother Eduardo V. Manalo continues to conduct pastoral visitations to strengthen the spiritual life of INC members around the world.”

“The stunt you may be referring to was by a small group of ex-INC members desperate for attention. And based on their message it is clear who their leader is.” With Jocelyn Uy

PROPERTY giant Ayala Land Inc. is unwinding its property investment in mainland China and instead focusing its overseas investing activities closer to home in Southeast Asia.

ALI chief finance officer Jaime Ysmael said in a press briefing on Friday that ALI was just trying to sell the remaining residential units and would afterwards liquidate its interest in the special purpose vehicle created to hold the investment in Tianjin Eco-City â€" 150 kilometers from Beijing â€" a 3,000-hectare collaboration between the Chinese and Singaporean governments to showcase advanced urban planning and sustainable development.

“We already gave up on another site that was allocated to us,” Ysmael said. “It’s very difficult in the current market.”

Ysmael said ALI would likely end up with a break-even position from its investment in Tianjin, which was made in 2010 when the company teamed up with Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City Investment and Development Co. Ltd. (SSTEC) to develop a 19-tower residential complex. SSTEC is a joint venture between a Chinese consortium led by Tianjin TEDA Investment Holding Co. Ltd and the Singapore consortium led by the Keppel group.

“It was definitely a learning experience,” Ysmael said, when asked about ALI’s inaugural foray into China. “It opened our eyes on how they actually operate: they really build very massive, and right away, and (have) access to the supply chain. We were able to gain access to some of those.”

One key difference with the Philippine residential market is that pre-selling of residential units ahead of a certain level of completion was not allowed in China so a developer like ALI would need to finance the project in the interim.

ALI’s decision to unwind its investment in China also comes in the aftermath of massive chemical warehouse explosion in another part of Tianjin in August 2015 that killed over a hundred people. This has been described as China’s worst industrial disaster in years.

Philippine church defends Manny Pacquiao on gay marriage stance
AFP

The Philippine Catholic church on Sunday defended boxing hero Manny Pacquiao for his opposition to gay marriage, saying he was only quoting the Bible.

But Father Jerome Secillano also said over radio station DZMM that Pacquiao should respect homosexuals and not judge and condemn them after the eight-division world champion last week described them as worse than animals.

Pacquiao, 37, who converted from Catholicism to an evangelical Protestant faith late in his boxing career, was pilloried by local gay rights groups and celebrities and has lost lucrative commercial endorsements as a result.

Secillano, executive secretary of the Catholic bishops' public affairs office, said: "This is really in the Bible. There is this quote he (Pacquiao) uses from the Bible and we cannot change that."

He said it was "unfair" to condemn Pacquiao for echoing what he reads in the Bible when he was asked about same-sex marriage.

But Secillano also said the boxing hero should not have used such offensive language.

"The church... says that if this is your lifestyle, if this is your orientation, then we respect that, we cannot condemn them," the priest said.

He reiterated that the Catholic church, which counts 80 percent of Filipinos as followers, still opposed legalisation of same-sex marriage.

Church influence has also kept divorce and abortion from being legalised in the Philippines.

However homosexuality is not criminalised and several LGBT figures have become celebrities.

Hair-based drug tests are the most accurate, as the chart below shows, since traces of everything from alcohol to morphine can remain in the follicle for up to 90 days:

(Dragan Radovanovic/Business Insider)
#4153
For urine, the window of detectibility is a little bit wider â€" roughly three to six days for LSD, MDMA, and morphine, for example â€" and up to 30 days for marijuana:

(Dragan Radovanovic/Business Insider)
#4154
As the chart below shows, traces of drugs like LSD, morphine, heroin, amphetamines, and alcohol all remain in the blood for just 12 hours or less:

Contrary to what many advertised drug tests might promise, not all substances leave their telltale chemical signature in the body for the same amount of time.

The moment we take a drug â€" whether we snort, smoke, or swallow it â€" our bodies begin to break it down. In the process, metabolites, or byproducts, of the drug are produced, which can linger in our blood, urine (and even in our hair) for long after the initial effects of the drug are felt. Traces of these metabolites are what drug testers look for, since they're a good indication that someone has actually used a drug rather than merely come into accidental contact with it.

And while hair-based drug tests are fairly accurate, tests of blood and urine are simply unable to detect the vast majority of drugs, so long as you haven't used for about a week. Heroin, for example, is generally undetectable in urine after three to five days.

In August of 2007, Lee was one of four people inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor. When asked to address the audience, she responded simply: "Well, it's better to be silent than to be a fool."

In an age when people feel compelled to update their Facebook status constantly, Lee kept her thoughts to herself. Not a post, nor a tweet.

With the 2014 publication of "The Mockingbird Next Door: Life with Harper Lee," it appeared that Lee's resolve had softened. Then in February 2015, publisher Harper announced the pending release of her "Go Set a Watchman," even including a rare statement from Lee: "I am humbled and amazed that this will now be published after all these years."

No, she did not talk with me. Yes, I would have gladly trumpeted an exclusive interview. But part of me was hoping that she'd stick to her guns and let the singular accomplishment of "Mockingbird" speak for itself.

We have this notion that our heroes â€" movie stars, athletes or authors â€" owe us more than just the fruits of their talents; that being a public figure means you are public property. Lee was able to keep her own counsel and, along with friends and relatives, protect her privacy.

I like a scoop as much as the next reporter. But the idea of prying into Lee's life always felt a bit like killing a mockingbird â€" the bird you leave alone because all it does is sing.

I'm kind of glad she resisted. And, in that slanted-script letter, at least I have something else to remember her by.

Like so many, I was in junior high school when an English teacher introduced me to Southern lawyer Atticus Finch and his two children, Jem and Scout. We were assigned "Mockingbird," William Golding's "Lord of the Flies" and S.E. Hinton's "The Outsiders" all in the same year â€" a magical year which taught me that reading needn't be a chore.

Growing up in a relatively integrated former mill town north of Boston, the fictional Maycomb, Alabama, was my first real exposure to the evils of segregation. The tale of Atticus' quixotic defense of Tom Robinson â€" the disabled black handyman who finds himself charged with rape for having the audacity to feel sorry for a poor, abused white girl â€" left a lasting impression on me.

In my 28 years with The Associated Press, all of it spent in the South, I've met many characters who would have been right at home in Lee's Maycomb.

And her May 2005 letter, brief as it was, fit with what I already sensed about her: There was gentility there, and the generosity of her decision to not only respond, but to offer a compliment, spoke volumes.

We live in a society that sets enormously high expectations for second acts â€" be they books or movies or music albums. And we can't wait to pounce when they don't live up to those expectations.

Harper Lee shrugged at such demands â€" in publishing and even public speaking.

"It's like an owl at noon," she reportedly told a friend after a rare engagement. "You'll never see me do something like this again."

And we didn't.
#4159
I told Lee about my project, and that she â€" as someone who'd divided her time between New York City and Monroeville â€" would be a perfect fit. I even included some of my favorite feature stories â€" as proof of my bona fides, I suppose.

It was the height of wishful thinking. I didn't really expect a reply.

Nine days later, a letter arrived. It was postmarked in New York, but the return address was a post office box in Monroeville.

The note was brief.

"Dear Mr. Breed:

"Thank you for your kind letter and its enclosures. You show much talent as a non-fiction writer!" she wrote in a clear script that sloped somewhat down to the right.

"I simply don't give interviews â€" I gave all my publisher and the movie people asked me to give long ago (before you were born), and that was it. However, if I ever decide to give another, you will be near the top of the waiting list!"

There was a brief postscript on the backside of the page.

"My eyesight is failing, and I must look sideways to write," it read, "so please forgive the slant!"

Wow!

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) â€" It was, without a doubt, the nicest rejection of my journalistic career.

I was working on a project about whether "Southernness" was an outdated notion in our mobile culture, and was looking for regional icons to share their thoughts. One of the first names that popped into my mind was Harper Lee.

The author of "To Kill a Mockingbird" hadn't granted an interview in about four decades, but I figured it was worth a shot. So I crafted a letter and sent it off to Monroeville, Alabama, care of attorney Alice F. Lee â€" the author's older sister and chief gatekeeper.

"I know you have had any number of journalistic suitors over the years," I began, "but I hope you won't mind one more."

Learn English Online / Terminological inexactitude
February 20, 2016, 10:32:46 PM
In 1906, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was campaigning for Parliament. One of his biggest talking points during the campaign was how the previous government brought in 60,000 Chinese citizens as indentured servants. These citizens were used for British labor, and many felt this was exploitation. Churchill sided with the people who saw this as all-out slavery, and he denounced the policy.

After Churchill was elected, he realized he needed to backtrack on his previous remarks. He didn’t want to put the British Crown at fault by saying it supported slavery, but he also didn’t want to seem like a liar. In his change of heart, he refused to say it was a lie that Chinese indentured servants were actually slaves. Instead, he made a speech where he called it a “terminological inexactitude.” It was PR gold.

This soft term has been recycled over the years. Former US Secretary of State Alexander Haig also conveniently made use of it. He defended himself at one point by stating, “That’s not a lie. It’s a terminological inexactitude.” -- http://listverse.com/

Pacquiao's remarks were criticized by several Filipino celebrities, and he responded by issuing an apology of sorts. In it, Pacquiao said he was still against same sex marriage but loved all people.

Arum told The Associated Press that Pacquiao is an evangelical Christian who believes that homosexuality is wrong, and that he was trying to win votes in the Philippines, where the issue of same sex marriage has not been decided.

"What he said is completely for home consumption for Filipinos wrestling with the question of legalizing same sex marriage," Arum said.

In addition to his campaign for the Senate, Pacquiao is currently training for the April 9 fight in Las Vegas against Bradley in what he says will be his last bout. Arum said he could lose some other fight sponsors because of the remarks.

Pacquiao has not fought since losing to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last May in the richest fight ever. Pacquiao reportedly made more than $100 million for the fight, and is guaranteed $20 million to fight Bradley.

Arum said he expects some people not to buy the fight on pay-per-view because of the comments, but that others might buy it because of them.

"Instead of promoting a fight with a fighter I'm promoting a fight with a politician," Arum said. "It's like of Donald Trump was a boxer and I was promoting Donald Trump when he was running for president. I would be killed by the media for all the stupid statements he is making."

It's not the first time Pacquiao has been involved in a furor over gay rights. In 2012 he was quoted as saying he was against same sex marriage because "It's the law of God" though he denied inferring that homosexuals should be put to death.

The eight-time champion is the Philippines' most famous person and the country's most popular athlete. He has represented the Sarangani province in the Philippines' House of Representatives since May 2010, though has drawn criticism for seldom showing up for legislative duties.

Polls in the Philippines show he is a strong contender for the Senate seat, which many believe will eventually lead him to seek the country's presidency.

Nike drops Manny Pacquiao in wake of anti-gay statements
By Tim Dahlberg (Associated Press) | Updated February 18, 2016 - 8:27am

Manny Pacquiao's latest disparaging comments about gays have cost him a contract with Nike.

It may not be the only endorsement Pacquiao loses, even as he and promoter Bob Arum scramble to contain the damage done by a television interview in the Philippines in which the boxer said gay people "are worse than animals."

"What he's saying is diametrically opposed to what I believe," said Arum, who is promoting Pacquiao's upcoming fight with Timothy Bradley. "I'm in favor of gay rights and same sex marriage. I'm apologetic personally to the gay movement in the United States."

Nike issued a brief statement Wednesday saying it was severing its ties with the boxer over his comments about gays. The company said it no longer will have any business dealings with the boxer.

"We find Manny Pacquiao's comments abhorrent," the statement said. "Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community."

Pacquiao, a congressman who is now running for Senate in the Philippines, made the comments to a television station that was asking candidates about their views on same sex marriage.

Sportshub ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1
"It's just common sense," Pacquiao said in the remarks posted online by the TV5 network. "Have you seen any animal having male-to-male or female-to-female relations?"

Animals, he said, were better because they recognize gender differences, and "if you have male-to-male or female-to-female (relationships), then people are worse than animals."

Job creation in manufacturing reached its peak in the United States in 1980 and has been on the decline ever since, accompanied by stagnating wages in the middle class, said Vardi.

Today there are more than 200,000 industrial robots in the country and their number continues to rise.

Meanwhile, Bart Selman, professor of computer science at Cornell University, said that investment in artificial intelligence in the United States was by far the highest-ever in 2015, since the birth of the industry some 50 years ago.

Business giants like Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Tesla, run by billionaire Elon Musk, are at the head of the pack.

Also, the Pentagon has requested 19 billion for developing intelligent weapons systems.

What is concerning about these new technologies is their ability to analyze data and execute complex tasks.

This raises concerns about whether humans might one day lose control of the artificial intelligence they once built, said Selman.

This has led scientists to call for the establishment of an ethical framework for the development of artificial intelligence, as well as safeguards for security in the years to come.

WASHINGTON: Advances in artificial intelligence will soon lead to robots that are capable of nearly everything humans do, threatening tens of millions of jobs in the coming 30 years, experts warned Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

“We are approaching a time when machines will be able to outperform humans at almost any task,” said Moshe Vardi, director of the Institute for Information Technology at Rice University in Texas.

“I believe that society needs to confront this question before it is upon us: If machines are capable of doing almost any work humans can do, what will humans do?” he asked at a panel discussion on artificial intelligence at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Vardi said there will always be some need for human work in the future, but robot replacements could drastically change the landscape, with no profession safe, and men and women equally affected.

“Can the global economy adapt to greater than 50 percent unemployment?” he asked.

For example, automation and robotization have already revolutionized the industrial sector over the last 40 years, raising productivity but cutting down on employment.

(BANAT NEWS)

Einstein's equations calculate this time difference to be about 38 microseconds per day, and these relativistic effects were taken into account by adding the required mathematical corrections into the system when the GPS satellites were deployed. The general theory of relativity (linked to special theory of relativity) explains even such microscopic anomalies about space and time so beautifully, and they together form the foundation of modern physics.

Another prediction of general theory of relativity is the newly detected gravitational waves. Physicists often describe gravitational waves as "ripples on space-time," caused by moving masses similar to the electromagnetic waves caused by moving charges. Like a pebble dropped in a pond can generate waves propagating in all directions across the water, cataclysmic events such as the collisions of black holes will send out energy propagating through the fabric of the spacetime in the form of gravitational waves.

LIGO scientists estimate that this particular event detected on earth in last September took place about 1.3 billion years ago. The researchers confirmed that these waves were generated by two massive black holes as they spiraled each other until merged together sending these ripples that washed across our planet at the speed of light about five months ago. Indeed, these waves are the voices of stellar ghosts (black holes) as they ripped each other apart in the far corners of the universe and that message was sent to us over the cosmic network.

Astronomers rely on different forms of electromagnetic waves to observe the universe. For example, radio telescopes are used in astronomy to explore the universe by detecting radio signals emitted by different objects. However, we learned to communicate with them -- think of mobile communication that is entirely dependent on radio waves. The detection of gravitational waves marked a triumphant moment in scientific history and will provide a completely new way of looking at the universe.

What will the coming years bring to physics? A new wave from the cosmic ocean, or, perhaps an ocean itself. -- http://www.huffingtonpost.com/

One Hundred Years of Gravitational Waves
02/15/2016 06:36 pm ET | Updated 4 hours ago
by Santhosh Mathew, PhD
Professor, researcher and writer

We all are familiar with the force of gravity. But, where do the gravitational waves fit in the picture?

On September 14, 2015 at 5:51 am ET, Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), detected the gravitational waves for the first time. This discovery confirmed one of the major predictions of Einstein's general theory of relativity, which will definitely pave the way for a new era of observational astrophysics.

The general theory of relativity, published a hundred years ago, describes spacetime as a single dynamic entity and predicts the bizarre phenomena, like black holes and gravitational waves. In other words, Einstein discarded Newtonian notion of the independent nature of space and time and argued that space is not a mere canvas upon which all the events unfold by the mysterious force of gravity, as envisioned by Newton.

The general theory of relativity also predicts that a strong gravitational field, similar to that of the sun, "warps" spacetime and even light is deflected by gravity. In 1919, the British astrophysicist Arthur Eddington measured the bending of star light around the sun during a solar eclipse as predicted by the general theory of relativity -- it was a clear vindication of the validity of this theory. There have been other verifications of general theory of relativity since the days of Eddington.

In fact, the seemingly abstract concept of warping of spacetime produces noticeable effects, such as time dilation that has been measured precisely. The general theory of relativity predicts that the warping spacetime will be larger in stronger gravitational fields. Apparently, clocks on the ground (closer to earth) will run more slowly than the clocks, say, aboard the GPS satellites orbiting the earth.

Weird and Extreme / Safety Coffins
February 16, 2016, 12:53:22 PM
Declaring people in prolonged coma to be dead was quite common during the Victorian era. The lucky ones often woke up at their funerals, while the unluckier and unfortunate ones woke up in their graves, where they probably later died. This led to the introduction of “waiting mortuaries,” where the bodies of dead people were taken until they began to decay. Waiting mortuaries didn’t help much, since more dead people ended up there than living, so “safety coffins” were introduced.

Safety coffins were just like normal coffins except that they had tools and apparatuses that a “dead” person could use to either escape from the coffin or to inform people above that they were still alive. Some safety coffins had strings that rang a bell above the ground whenever they were pulled or if the “corpse” moved. Others exposed a flag above the ground whenever the supposedly dead person blew air into a tube. Others had ladders that the person could simply use to climb out of the grave. -- http://listverse.com/

LGU Philippines / Poe makes it to 2016 ballot
February 16, 2016, 12:36:53 PM
Monday, February 15, 2016

DESPITE her disqualification by the Commission on Elections (Comelec), Senator Grace Poe has been included in the final list of presidential candidates for the May 2016 polls.

In a memorandum issued on February 15, the Comelec Law Department released the certified list of candidates of those running for the presidential, vice presidential, senatorial and party-list positions.

Aside from Poe, the five other presidential candidates to be included in the official ballot are Vice President Jejomar Binay; Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago; Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte; Manuel Roxas II, and the late former ambassador Roy Seneres.

Seneres' name has been included in the ballot as his party has expressed its interest to name a substitute candidate for the late congressman.

Poe's petition against the Comelec decision disqualifying her from the 2016 presidential race is now pending before the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the six official vice-presidential bets include senators Alan Peter Cayetano, Francis Escudero, Gringo Honasan, Bongbong Marcos, and Antonio Trillanes IV; and Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo.
