what goes up must come down.  history shows that no power, be it countries or persons, stays forever.  if it takes centuries for a country to develop, so does it take years for it to slide down to decay.  very often, this happens imperceptibly through a long period of time.  in the case of the u.s. of a., it may not happen in our lifetime.

Ordinario's hubby distraught, goes missing

Posted at 03/30/2011 12:31 PM | Updated as of 03/30/2011 2:14 PM

MANILA, Philippines â€" The husband of Sally Ordinario-Villanueva has yet to come home in Jones, Isabela province after leaving three days ago.

Hilarion Villanueva told his family that he was going somewhere in Santiago City.

“They were telling us the husband had a job or had to do something in Santiago City. They have yet to receive word on his whereabouts or if he is actually going to come back here to await word on Sally's fate,” said ABS-CBN News correspondent Jeff Canoy who is in Isabela.

Canoy added in his report that Sally’s husband left was emotional and had been drinking more to ease the pain of his wife’s impending fate.

Villanueva left their 2 children in the care of relatives while he is gone.

“When we got there, the media found out that the 2 children were taken away by some other relatives so that they can be protected from the media spotlight,” Canoy said.

Canoy and other mediamen were told that the children where going around Isabela province to visit other relatives.

Jason Ordinario, Sally's brother, said Sally was asking about her husband and why he did not come to Xiamen. "Nag-asawa na ba siya?" asked Sally.

Jason just informed her that Hilarion could not bear to see her and was busy taking care of their 2 kids.

Shortly before noon, Villanueva, along with Ramon Credo and Elizabeth Batain were executed via lethal injection in China.

“We have been informed that Ramon Credo, Sally Villanueva and Elizabeth Batain were administered lethal injections to carry out the death sentence imposed by the courts of the People's Republic of China this morning,” Malacanang said.

Vice-President Jejomar Binay said the Ordinario family positively identified Sally's remains after the execution.

Sally to gov't: Please help take care of my kids

Posted at 03/30/2011 11:19 AM | Updated as of 03/30/2011 2:05 PM

MANILA, Philippines - Sally Ordinario Villanueva, one of 3 Filipino drug couriers scheduled for execution in China Wednesday, asked the Philippine government to ensure that her children have an education.

Peter Ordinario, Sally's father, said her daughter wept and hugged the pictures of her two children, Princess May Joy, 12, and Lex Bert, 10, during their brief visit. Sally last saw her children in 2008.

"Huwag pababayaan ang pamilya at bahay niya at hihingi daw po kami ng tulong sa gobyerno ng Pilipinas para sa pag-aaral  ng mga anak niya," Peter told ABS-CBN News.

Peter said Sally cried when she learned that Princess was graduating salutatorian of her grade school graduating class.

He said Sally also asked her mother, Edith, why she had lost so much weight. "Mama, bakit ang payat payat mo na? Wag mo ako isipin dito. Ako andito lang ako. Isipin niyo rin sarili niyo," Sally told her mother.

Sally also told her siblings that she loved them, and that they would be losing a big sister. "Wala na kayong ate," she told younger brother Jason who accompanied Peter and Edith in Xiamen.

'She knew it was time'

Jason said the family only had an hour to talk with Sally. Chinese authorities then gave the Ordinarios Sally's belongings.

He said Sally asked them "Mamamatay na ba ako?" but they refused to answer. He said the whole family was crying, giving Sally a hint of what was about to happen.

Jason said Sally told her to be careful about who to trust. "Wag magtiwala sa mga kaibigan dahil baka sila din ang bumiktima," he recalled Sally as saying.

He said that after their visit, a priest came to anoint Sally.

Peter said Sally kept her spirits up while in prison by helping her fellow inmates. "Marami siyang kaibigan at natuturuan," he said.

He said Sally asked why her husband failed to visit her in Xiamen. It was learned Sally's husband has been missing for the last 3 days.

Drug couriers

Sally is one of 3 Filipinos scheduled for execution in China Wednesday morning. The other 2 are Ramon Credo and Elizabeth Batain.

The Philippine government had insisted that the three, who are among 227 Filipinos jailed in China for drug offenses, were from poor families and had been duped by international crime syndicates into becoming drug couriers.

It had heavily lobbied Chinese authorities to spare the lives of the trio, and Vice President Jejomar Binay was even sent to Beijing last month on a mercy mission.

Chinese authorities briefly postponed the executions due to his visit, but later announced that they would still go ahead.

jorgeanna, do you know the lyrics of the whole baleleng song in tausug?  this is getting exciting!  if you do, please post it.  i would greatly appreciate it.  (i couldn't find the complete tausug lyrics anywhere, unless i try to make out the words of the youtube baleleng song in tausug that fr chic posted in another thread, the result of which would be undeniably imperfect.)

isles,

why are you interested in the tausug version of baleleng? do you happen to understand the tausug language?

no, i don't.  i'm interested because it exists, and the original is always worth knowing.  besides, since our languages belong to the same family of austronesian languages, there may be some words that are similar, and we may understand the song contextually.  (i would liken it to praying or singing in latin; we may not understand every word, but we get to know the meaning of the whole prayer or song.)

the freddie aguilar tagalog version has a better orchestration than max surban's.  at least, i convinced our household help that the 'second original' is visayan and not tagalog as freddie's version came about a decade later as a theme song of a movie that starred lito lapid and monica herrera.  (i don't know the movie's title.)

blazes!  there's also an ilonggo version and a claim that theirs is the original! ::)
#40821

thank you very much, fr chic and lorenz, for your 'baleleng' song posts.  i'm still halfway through downloading them all and converting them to mp3.  the choral rendition is great!  at the moment, i'm converting the nono version.  thanks!
#40822
the phrase 'aparri to jolo' had always been wrong.  whoever coined that (circa 1950s or 1960s?) didn't think of the northernmost and southernmost small islands that are part of the country.  it should have been batanes to tawi-tawi.  better still, babuyan to sitangkai. ???

Ba Leleng

Pila na ba Leleng layu-layu
Sitangkay ba Leleng pa Sibutu
Bang kasi bunal ba Leleng
Matuyu urul kau ba Leleng pa malayu.

English:
How far is it Leleng
From Sitangkay to Sibutu
(these are islands in the Sulu archipelago)
If you really are determined
Then follow me.

sitangkay (or sitangkai) and sibutu (or sibuto) turns out to be only 21.18kms apart.  the clincher: the sea separates them. they must have been unthinkably far from each other in the old days, when the song 'baleleng' was composed.

the song's music had always been haunting, but now the song itself had come back to haunt me.  i was stumped when our household help, a tagalog, said that "baleleng" is originally tagalog as sung by freddie aguilar.  so i showed her, if only because it gets my goat when tagalog versions of cebuano songs are claimed by tagalogs as their own compositions (the most infamous: "kasadya ning taknaa" christmas song).

the best wake-up call of all:  a non-filipino here played "baleleng" on the electronic organ.  i felt like crying.

It appears to me that this song is originally or traditionally Tausog covered by many artists esp. the most popular one by Max Surban. Ambot ngano giangkon man nga si Max Surban ang composer ani? Maybe the Cebuano translation only... unsa bay tinuod Ms. Isles?

i believe max surban can only claim as original his own cebuano version of the song.  i even doubt if he himself was the one who translated this, though i don't know any better.

as far as i can remember, when i got curious about this song in the early '80s (max surban's version was recorded in 1978) because my then 3-year-old bol-anon jamong niece frequently sang this, my father said that it's a tausug folk song and that max surban's version somehow caused "their world" and "our world" to get closer.

i thought then that the words "sitangkay" and "sibuto" were just a 3-year-old's gobbledygook, until i saw a poster at the post office and realized that these were places in tawi-tawi that are reachable by mail!  i just had to do some research because i felt i was taking for granted some places in my own country while i can go to great lengths to find out where in denmark the castle of elsinore of shakespeare's hamlet is.

then i let the song rest in my mind's back burner.  the next time i paid attention to this song was when i named one of our chickens "baleleng".

VHINZ, you're good at this.  i hope you're still around.  mp3 is very much welcome.  a youtube one will take hours of downloading, considering the internet speed here, where i am.  besides, i hope to be able to listen to these two songs while driving.  i also hope to play this on the violin (hehe, ambisyosang kabaw).

Border Agent Put His Wife on Terrorist List

Immigration officer fired after putting wife on list of terrorists to stop her flying home

An immigration officer tried to rid himself of his wife by adding her name to a list of terrorist suspects.

He used his access to security databases to include his wife on a watch list of people banned from boarding flights into Britain because their presence in the country is ‘not conducive to the public good’.

As a result the woman was unable for three years to return from Pakistan after travelling to the county to visit family.

The tampering went undetected until the immigration officer was selected for promotion and his wife name was found on the suspects’ list during a vetting inquiry.

The Home Office confirmed today that the officer has been sacked for gross misconduct.

Product Reviews / Re: Pepsi Vs. Coke
March 27, 2011, 10:54:53 PM
this can be taken either way.  pepsi has more creativity or it keeps changing its mind.  coca-cola is too staid and stuck or too secure with itself.

personal taste, before i avoided these drinks:  it ought to be coke if it's cold, it's pepsi if it isn't.  these days, pepsi max tastes much better than coke zero.

What is your view on China's Ascension to Superpowerdom?

at this point i'm beginning to dread it.  so far china had bullied the philippines enough.  in terms of foreign policy, china had dictated to us to keep us in line, and we cower in obedience.  ugh.  are we afraid that if all the chinese urinate together our country will sink? >:(

Roma among World's Most Persecuted Groups
Sometimes Called Gypsies, Romany People Have Hard Lives

(Apr 13, 2009 Rupert Taylor)

The absence of a written record makes it difficult to trace the origin of the Roma people. However, according to the 2002 book “We Are the Romani People” by Ian Hancock they share close relationships with the Banjara people of India and the Dom people of Central Asia.

Almost half of all Roma carry Y chromosomes of a haplogroup that is rarely found outside the Indian subcontinent, according an article in the September 14, 2005 issue of BioEssays. Linguists have also traced the Romany language, some of which resembles ancient Sanskrit, to similar tongues spoken in the Indian subcontinent.

The Roma are frequently and incorrectly called Gypsies in the erroneous belief that they came from Egypt.
