for those interested, may i suggest that you go through wikipedia, which has a long entry about friday the 13th.  it's interesting because of this superstition's historical underpinnings.  as for the rest of us, any day, any date, is unlucky or lucky if anything bad or good comes our way.

what i believe though is that like prophecy, there is also such thing as a self-fulfilling superstition.  afraid to drive on a friday the 13th?  well, simple enough.  you drive anyway but keep thinking of the day as unlucky.  you may even hold some fear about what's going to happen.  ergo, you are distracted.  you lose control of your nerves.  boy, you don't notice before it's too late that you are driving straight into a tree.

in this case, am i to understand that henry thus believes that education first made its survey conclusion before the results such that this agency had to tweak its findings (by excluding the philippines) just to make its foregone conclusion right?

#40612
thanks, got it now.  it's not henry's conclusion after all.

OT:  i reacted too much against feeling like our country is the whipping boy of asia; it has always been easy to label it with anything negative.  are we ourselves to be blamed for grumbling too much about our own dissatisfaction?  are our media's priorities perverse?  pnoy was right to complain that there was no news about a certain accomplishment last valentine's day; media releases focused more on whether he has a date or not.  we're supposed to be poor but we're not hungry enough to be preoccupied with dates? :o

A reaction from "Henry", Mon Apr 04, 2011 21:33 PHT:

Philippines is not included in the survey. If they included Philippines in their sample, it would have totally mess up their conclusion since they basically argued that English proficiency is directly proportional to the wealth of a nation. Higher per capita means better English proficiency for a country. Hence Education First might have opted not to include Philippines in the survey considering it would have been a major anomaly. Philippines would have ranked highest among Asian countries despite having the lowest per capita and a "relatively weak public school system". And they will never be able to explain this anomaly since they can never quantify the sociological phenomenon that is "Americanization of Filipino Society." When math does not support the facts, just overlook (or eliminate) the things that does not fit. Classic case of simplification. Way to go Education First!

More reactions at: http://ph.news.yahoo.com/korea-ranks-3rd-asian-countries-english-proficiency-20110404-000001-219.html

kujawan man sad ko aning english ni henry.  unsa man ni, the result of poverty and a "relatively weak public school system"?

let me be simplistic too by focusing on henry's conclusion that "english proficiency is directly proportional to the wealth of a nation".  when, oh how did this ever come about?  does a nation get rich because of its english language?  does the english language make a nation rich?  break me a f_ ck_ng give! :o

to follow this logic is to say that nigeria, ranked no. 3 in terms of number of english speakers (79,000,000) is wealthier than the united kingdom, which is ranked no. 4 (59,600,000).

#40628

there are just too many rankings of english proficiency of countries by too many researches (one study ranks the philippines as fifth, another ranks it as 20th, this study does not include it, etc.) such that believing any one study is enough challenge for logic and math. :o

BOL-ANON KINI!

Ingles’ waiver of LGU stipend ‘struck’ P-Noy

JUDGE Gabriel Ingles said President Benigno Aquino III found “peculiar” his application for associate justice of the Court of Appeals (CA).

Ingles said a source informed him that Aquino was impressed with his decision to waive his monthly stipend from local government units (LGU) to maintain judicial independence.

The source, whom Ingles refused to name, told him this was the main reason the President confirmed his appointment to the CA post. “Secondly, I don’t have political endorsements,” Ingles told Sun. Star Cebu in an interview yesterday.

Ingles, presiding judge of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 58, received the official confirmation of his appointment by President Aquino last March 4.

First nod

Among the four newly appointed CA associate justices, Ingles got the first nod from the President. He was appointed last Feb. 24, while the others were chosen on March 1.

Their appointment papers were transmitted on both dates, though, from the Palace to the Supreme Court.

In an interview in his office, Ingles said he was told that President Aquino was impressed with his decision to waive his monthly stipend from the local government units during his nine years as RTC judge in Cebu City.

Ingles said he was happy with the development because “that’s what the Constitution says.”

This is also the reason the Judicial and Bar Council was created, he said.

Ingles assured that his judicial independence would continue in his new job at the CA.

He will still waive his monthly allowance in his new job at the appellate court.

“I will stand my ground. If I think what I am doing is right, I will do it no matter the cost. (Judicial) independence is a very important factor,” said Ingles.

No lobbying

Ingles vowed to disallow “lobbying” of cases at the appellate court. If this happens, he warned he would disclose it as part of the case record.

As a former Palace of Justice spokesperson, Ingles assured he would still be open to
queries from the media for transparency at the CA.

Ingles submitted his application for the CA post last Sept. 13, 2010. He was interviewed by the JBC last Nov. 9.

The JBC submitted at least 13 nominees to President Aquino to fill the four vacant posts in the CA left by Justices Sixto Marella, Jose Sabio, Arangelita Lontok and Andres Reyes Jr.

Ingles, who has been the RTC Branch 58 presiding judge for nine years now, was the lone judge in Central Visayas who was nominated and appointed to the post.

With Ingles’ appointment to the CA, he RTC in Cebu City will lack two judges.

But you all say it is sliding down but most people are still trying to get over the border of the US from here.....

point one:  we here are not all saying it is sliding down.  it is obvious that we've taken all sides in our discussions.

point two:  not most people are trying to get over the border of the u.s. from here.  we're not in mexico that's contiguous with the u.s. and where getting "over the border" is possible.   statistics may be boring, but if you care to take a peek at them, you will find out that it's not really most people; some, maybe, but not most.  in fact, some of those who are already there are planning to come back.

point 3:  ever wondered why if, hypothetically, china is rising while the u.s. is sliding, not most of us are trying to get over the border of china from here?

that bribe is peanuts for abs-cbn, if ever, though i can't tell if it would be of any good for the case.

as interested observers, we might as well enjoy this game of conspiracy theories.  a counter-offer of much more than the reported bribery amount would also be peanuts from willie and friends, one of whom we know as a billionaire former presidential aspirant who once expressed dissatisfaction over abs-cbn's coverage of his campaign.

strange, the kid's family name is estrada.  is suan the father's family name?  or is the boy already getting a stage name this early?

#40646
so is it with the case of this six-year-old boy.  what parent would do such a crazy thing as teaching a child to dance that way and letting him go on despite his tears?  is there any mention here of bringing those parents to court for child abuse?

i've never seen a tv program of revillame either before or after whatever tv network he is in now (i ban tv at home), but why focus only on this guy who's the bringer of silly dreams and not on the little boy's elders who put him there?

#40647
another thing i learned from the dswd:  s.o.p. kuno ni; kun naay bata nga manglimos o nagsimhot ug rugby, there is always the possibility that an elder, usually a parent, is in the vicinity, either selling cigarettes or pickpocketing.  it is these elders that the dswd wants to root out first, an almost impossible task.

#40648

gikabuhi ko tungod kay katuhoan ning imong sugilon, k.  yet i still want to believe in the basic goodness of people.  di lang tingali gyod maatol sa dswd.  another thing, bisan tingalig gitagad ning mga bataa sa dswd, wa man sad ni silay media coverage, so ang pagtagad wa say media coverage.  one makes the other, sa ato pa.

sa binalikbalik nako sa dswd sa cebu sa una (lain-lain ug tuyo, kasagaran bahin ug bata, apil na tong nisumbong ko bahin ug bata nga abused sa amahan) motagad gyod sila dayon.  a case officer was assigned at once, who then made it clear that one more act of abuse by the father would land him in court.  hingok ra to, no media coverage.  what for?  it would have aggravated the situation because it would shame the father publicly and i myself would disappear by slamming my door on any mediaman who may have come to interview me.  salamat nga wa maingon ana ang nahitabo.  we can do more without the weight of publicity.

well, willie revillame is news.  too bad.

as for hermits, it is supposed that they've refused commitment to others as they've chosen a spiritual life of prayer away from the material world and have offered themselves wholly to god.  otherwise, i can't imagine a hermitage of benedictine or trappist monks or, for that matter, a cloister of carmelite nuns or pink sisters filled with narcissists.

Court orders arrest of DErz
The Bohol Standard
Sunday, April 3, 2011

The Regional Trial Court (RTC) has ordered the arrest of former Sunday Post society/entertainment writer-editor Manuel Ferdinand “D Erz” De Erio for libel filed by former Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) National and Provincial President Jane Censoria Cajes-Yap.

Sunday Post publisher Ciriaco “Boy/BG” Guingguing has been indicted in the case and thus ordered arrested, too. Guingguing yesterday said he already posted bail at P10,000 for his temporary liberty but De Erio was reported to be outside Bohol.

Presiding Judge Irma Zita Masamayor of RTC-Branch 52 based in Talibon issued the arrest warrant after the Provincial Prosecution Office (PPO) found “probable cause of libel” against the two accused.

De Erio, also known as DERZ was a former trusted aide of the Cajes familiy, worked as press relation officer of then Trinidad Mayor Judith Cajes and was a staff of the SK provincial federated office at Capitol.

In its resolution last January, the Provincial Prosecution Office found “probable cause that the crime of libel was committed” and that De Erio and Guinguing “are probably guilty thereof and should be held for trial” in the proper court.

Pasayawa Ko Day

(lyrics of Max Surban version)

Pasayawa ko, day
Sayaw lang sa uban
Ikaw may gusto ko
Nganong ako nga anaa may uban
Pagaksa nalang ko, day
Di ko lagi kay wa koy gusto
Irog irog, unsay irog, sibog sibog
Unsay sibog, unsay sibog sibog ngarig dyutay

Pastilan nimo inday, pagkawala moy kalooy
Oy ang gugma undo, di madalag looy looy
Pahaluka nalang kug dyutay, unsay halok oy unsay dyutay
Irog irog, unsay irog, sibog sibog
Unsay sibog, unsay sibog sibog ngarig dyutay

Pahaluka ko day, asa man?
sa imong aping, nganom man?
ako ay molakaw, asa man?
ngadto sa Davao, aw diay!
Maayo niini maghimo kita ug handuman, unsa man?
panyong binurdahan sineprahan sa imong ngalan, aw diay!

Paminaw ra undo, ngano man?
aniay tambag, unsa man?
paghinayhinay do, ngamo man?
ikaw mabonggo, aw diay!

Maayo pa undo palayo nalang kanako, ngano man?
Kay dili ka gayud makadama ning akung dughan, aw diay!

Paliton ko day ang imong kaanyag
Aniay lima nga akung ihatag, dawata na kini
Ayaw diha ug tinunto undo ngano ba ug dili dili ko mamenyo

Madubok ikaw, bisan
sigi na lagi, dili
Wa nay mupunit, ngano bag way molingi
Kay ang gugma ko dili kabayran ug lima lang ka pesos
Aron lang magum-os.

Tingali unya ikaw magbasol
Niaanang imong hikug-hikug
Sigi sigi na, ha ha ha

Aniay lima, ha ha ha
Lima ka libo ni, be tan-awon ta be
Bwahahaha wa ka kuyapi!

Star light, star bright Poem
Dorothy Parker

Star, that gives a gracious dole,
What am I to choose?
Oh, will it be a shriven soul,
Or little buckled shoes?

Shall I wish a wedding-ring,
Bright and thin and round,
Or plead you send me covering-
A newly spaded mound?

Gentle beam, shall I implore
Gold, or sailing-ships,
Or beg I hate forevermore
A pair of lying lips?

Swing you low or high away,
Burn you hot or dim;
My only wish I dare not say-
Lest you should grant me him.

tsk tsk, violent prisoners/ criminals man imong gi post diri nong. dili man intawn na sila celebrity. criminals man intawn.

unless you are a fan of them, of course, which i hope not..

since this thread is about "celebrity", let's take a closer look then at what the word means:

"A celebrity (sometimes referred to as a celeb in popular culture) is a person who holds a high degree of recognition in a society or culture.  Generally speaking, a celebrity is someone who receives media attention and in certain circumstances displays an extroverted personality.

There is a wide range of ways by which people may become celebrities: from their profession, appearances in the mass media, or even by complete accident or infamy.  The term "Instant celebrity" describes someone who becomes a celebrity in a very short period of time.  In some places, someone who somehow achieves a small amount of transient fame, through hype or mass media, is stereotyped as a B-grade celebrity." (wikipedia)

Synonyms: big name, cause célèbre (also cause celebre), celeb, figure, icon (also ikon), light, luminary, megastar, name, notability, notable, notoriety, personage, personality, somebody, standout, star, superstar, VIP (Merriam-Webster)

in keeping with the blue-colored words (emphasis mine) criminals who just happen to have beards but whose crimes hugged the headlines for a time and whose names achieved recognition qualify as celebrities.

and like current news, today's celebrity could be tomorrow's history.  i don't know what hype was involved (because celebrity involves media hype as we know it) in your estimation that marcelo h. del pilar (the father of philippine masonry, besides), moses, king solomon and jesus christ himself are celebrities, even if they all had beards.

to be honest, i cannot imagine moses and michael jackson in the same hall of fame.
