Kanus-a pa kaha ma-eradicate ang rabies sa Pinas...

bisan sa campaign sa health department in coordination with the agricultural department down to the barangay level for free dog and cat vaccinations, di gyod maatol.  daghan pa nato ang irresponsible pet owners.  another thing, vaccinations may be free, but neutering and spaying are not, nga puwerteng mahala.  mao nga sigeg panganak ang mga iro ug iring unya pasagdan lang.  wa ra ba gyod ni silay labot sa rh bill.

ang gibuhat sa philippine animal welfare society (paws) and other animal rights groups pitik ra intawon in the context of the whole problem.  but at least their public awareness campaign is slowly taking hold.  we will get there, sooner than we think.  that's my dream anyway.

because of this story and the fact that we have a good number of various pets at home, i had to tell our little daughter once again to never keep secret from us even the most minor of scratches from a cat or a dog.  all our pets go through annual deworming and a series of vaccinations, but any wound accidentally inflicted by them may still get infected, and i want to avoid that.

1 ka maguwang nga girl scout:  to de bras, to de brek, wen de de is pirs awek, and the girl scout, go hiking along... (ang last line ray akong nasabtan.)

most interesting, because of this older sister (six-year gap between us), i learned the english 'land of the morning' ('bayang magiliw' in filipino, er, tagalog diay.)

The crime of rape shall be punished by reclusion perpetua.  -from REPUBLIC ACT NO. 7659 (An Act To Impose The Death Penalty On Certain Heinous Crimes, Amending For That Purpose The Revised Penal Laws, And For Other Purposes)

reclusion perpetua, in case?

Reclusion perpetua entails a minimum imprisonment of 30 years after which a convict becomes eligible for pardon, but the maximum period for imprisonment may not exceed 40 years.  (www.en.wikipilipinas.org)

#40543

nasuwertehan pa gyod ning mga tripolantiha ay:

In 2006, the Philippines, one of the few democratic nations which authorized the death penalty for rape, abolished the death penalty altogether.

perverse people, beware!

The (Philippines's) Anti-Rape Law of 1997, which amended the previous definition of rape as defined in the Revised Penal Code of 1930, now defines the crime of rape as follows:

Article 266-A. Rape: When And How Committed.

Rape is committed:

       1) By a man who shall have carnal knowledge of a woman under any of the following circumstances:

           a) Through force, threat, or intimidation;
           b) When the offended party is deprived of reason or otherwise unconscious;
           c) By means of fraudulent machination or grave abuse of authority; and
           d) When the offended party is under twelve (12) years of age or is demented, even though none of the circumstances
                mentioned above be present.

       2) By any person who, under any of the circumstances mentioned in paragraph 1 hereof, shall commit an act of sexual assault
by inserting his penis into another person's mouth or anal orifice, or any instrument or object, into the genital or anal orifice
            of another person.

Most victims of gang rape remain silent for months before reporting the crime. Obet Montes, coordinator for services of the women's group GABRIELA, says this is due to the victim’s fear of society’s judgment, of not wanting to be branded as “maruming babae” ("dirty woman"). The group says further that a rape victim becomes so afraid that she is going to be blamed for the crime, that she denies that she was violated.

Claire Padilla, a lawyer and advocate of women's rights who prosecuted the case of a 19-year old who had the mental capacity of a six-year old, says that a rape victim who keeps silent becomes easy prey for continued abuse.

Hmm. Nothing comic in the act at all. It's identifying the act using the dull instrument of words that somehow introduces a sense of the ludicrous.

thus do i concede that you don't only use the dull instrument of words but also the poignancy of pictures to catch that ludicrous sense.

He he, I have conceded that "nakuha ang pagkalalaki" is just as valid. In fact, I'm about willing to admit that in the case of a man being raped for the first time, "napusgay ang kaputli" might be in order--notwithstanding the expression's unintended comic effect.

hey, you're fun, hubag.  whether the rape victim is a female or male, you seem to find something comic there.  :-X

#40557
Quote from: hubag bohol on April 11, 2011, 08:59:35 AM
The proper expression should be something like "napusgay ang kaputli" if what's at issue is virginity--which, by the way, could be forcibly taken or freely, breathlessy, ardently given in total abandon though the heavens fall and the universe itself is sucked into nothingness.

;D

in which case, wow, rapists' weapons should be sucked into nothingness, ground to oblivion with a vagina dentata, as ardently as they sought to gain their improper entry though the heavens may fall. ;D

A little clarification is in order here. Kon moingon ta nga "nakuha ang pagkababaye", no distinction is made as to the state of innocence the woman is in (i.e., whether or not she's still a virgin).

fine, no distinction indeed.  except for the gender, right?

Batik is psychedelic.

Yes, especially modern free-form and stylized designs. But even the staid traditional geometric designs--many of them anyway--have some kind of pyschedelic touch, too.

psychedelic art

Psychedelic Art is informed by the notion that altered states of consciousness produced by psychedelic drugs are a source of artistic inspiration. The psychedelic art movement is similar to the surrealist movement in that it prescribes a mechanism for obtaining inspiration. Whereas the mechanism for surrealism is the observance of dreams, a psychedelic artist turns to drug induced hallucinations. Both movements have strong ties to important developments in science. Whereas the surrealist was fascinated by Freud's theory of the unconscious, the psychedelic artist has been literally "turned on" by Albert Hofmann's discovery of LSD. (wikipedia)

more striking, piako-paku art is similar to the more known paisley design of scotland.

what struck me about these batik designs as posted here was that nothing resembled even that of maranao art, which almost always shows the piako-paku design, after those edible ferns that are (or were) traditionally abundant in the area.  and the batik cloths i'm familiar with carried this design.

i learned that real, woven batik is very expensive.  those made in china are the printed inexpensive ones, it is said.  well, i can still assure myself that china will soon tire of its inexpensive labor that makes it possible for it to become the world's factory.  besides, there's quality as a factor.  try buying a kitchen knife that looks like it came straight from solingen.  it won't last a week.  the handle will fall off before you can even get to sharpen it.

disclaimer:  the furniture that bugsay is making there is a class by itself, hehe. ;D

Machine-made printed cotton malongs are made in Indonesia specifically for export to the Philippines, and are commonly referred to as "batik" because the item is imported; those inexpensive machine-made malongs are used for everyday purposes.  (wikipedia)

it used to be that i went for 'malong' made of batik cloth as house wear and sleep wear (instead of dusters), and always these were from southern mindanao.  what i took for batik turned out to be okir, after all.  thanks to tb (and hubag), i'm now enlightened.

Batik or fabrics with the traditional batik patterns are also found in several countries such as Malaysia, Japan, China, Azerbaijan, India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal, and Singapore. Malaysian batik often displays plants and flowers to avoid the interpretation of human and animal images as idolatry, in accordance with local Islamic doctrine.

i wonder why the philippines is not mentioned here.  could it be that batik is less common in the country except in southern mindanao?

#40599

hahaha!  mao niy klarong kamatuoran behind surveys, raqz, these unexpected factors, wa pay labot sa niingon nga gigutom aron di pangayoan ug limos, o di ba kaha nitubag nga gigutom kay nakaingon nga ang interviewer maoy advance party sa free cash incentives ni pnoy, nagbasinbasin nga maapil sa lista nga tagaanan tungod kay gakutoy na ilang tiyan.
