Health and Food / Alugbati and its uses
February 27, 2009, 10:03:20 AM
Alugbati and its various uses
Alugbati or vine spinach is usually found in South-East Asia and Africa. It can easily grow up in garden without taking too much care. The general use of this plant is as vegetable and an important ingredient to make different dishes. But it may also use as a decorative plant in some province. It is a great source of antioxidant, vitamins A, B and C, Iron and Calcium. It also contains high roughage and it's very easy to digest.

The whole parts of plant like leaves, stem and seeds can be eaten.

Research reveals that it’s good for health and works as a soft laxative. The roots are quite effective in removing redness of the skin. It has been used in dressing to cover up the swelled area to minimize the puffiness. In case of burn and scald, apply the mixture of leaf pulp and butter on wound. It produces a cooling effect. Liquid of the plant is effective for acne eruptions and also eases inflammation. For child and pregnant lady, the decoction of the leaves make a better laxative.

SALVATION AND
ETERNAL SECURITY

“Can I be saved from my sins? And if I do get saved, what happens if I sin again? Will I lose my salvation?” Have you ever had these questions, or similar ones on your mind? Did you know that it is possible for any person to know how to be saved, and then to have the assurance of that salvation and eternal security (eternal salvation)? That’s right! You can know right now how to be saved for all eternity. Want to know? Good! Here’s how.

The Bible says that we are all sinners by birth and in deed, and that we need to be saved. (Ro. 5:12) We stand in need of salvation. But there’s just one problem - we cannot do anything to save ourselves. No one else can save us since they, like us, are sinners standing in need of salvation. (Ro. 3:10) They’re in the same predicament as you and I! But salvation is possible and available because God provided a means whereby a sinner can be saved. How is this possible? Jesus Christ who is not only the Son of God, but is also God of very God, (Jn. 20:28) has paid our sin debt when He shed His blood and died on the Cross of Calvary. (Jn. 19:1-30) You see, Jesus Christ left heaven’s glory and took to Himself a human body in order that He might be able to die on Calvary for sinful man. He remained God, but became the God-man. Even though Jesus Christ had taken on a human body, He was not a sinner, and He never committed any sins. He was in every sense a sinless person, and as such He was qualified to pay our sin debt. (1 Pe. 2:21-24) Therefore, when He was crucified on the cross, our sin debt was laid to His account, even though He was not a sinner. When Jesus Christ shed His innocent blood and died, He in every sense paid in full the sin debt that we owed. (1 Jn. 2:2) He bodily rose from the grave three days later and, today, He is in Heaven (He. 10:14) interceding on our behalf. (Ro. 8:34; He. 7:25) When an individual comes to that place in his life where he recognizes the fact that he is a sinner on his way to a Christless eternity in a devil’s hell, and he repents of his sins and asks for God’s forgiveness, and for Jesus Christ to come into his heart and save him, then he is forgiven and saved. He is at that moment born-again - a spiritual rebirth. And, this salvation from God is eternal - it never ends - for any reason. Consider these verses from God’s Word. Ro. 10:9,13; Jn. 6:37; 1 Jn. 5:11-13. These verses, as well as all other verses on salvation, when taken in their Biblical and theological concept and context, do not teach that a person can lose salvation or that a person must do, or avoid doing anything to remain saved. When God saves a person it is for eternity. Period!

But what if you sin again, does it mean that you lose your salvation? The answer is NO! The above verses prove that salvation is eternal, but you do not have a license to live anyway you want. (Ro. 6:1,2) As Christians, we have the responsibility to live in such a manner as to bring honor and glory to our Saviour. (Gal. 2:20) When we sin we disrupt the fellowship that we enjoy with our heavenly Father, but we retain our salvation. The moment we realize that we have sinned we need to confess it to God, and He will forgive it and our fellowship will be restored (1 John 1:9; 1 Jn. 2:1 in speaking to Christians). If you have never been saved, that is, received Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour, then you need to do it today - right now - before it becomes eternally too late. (2 Co. 6:2) Then seek out a good independent, fundamental, Bible believing and Bible preaching, Baptist church. Attend it regularly that you might be spiritually fed from God’s Word to help you grow spiritually strong. If you have received Jesus Christ as Saviour, are you living for Him? Does your life show it?

Una: Kinahanglan nga ilhon nimo ngaIKAW USA KA MAKASASALA.

Taga-Roma 3:10 â€"“Walay bisan kinsa nga matarung,bisan usa lamang.”

Jacobo 1:15 â€"“Ang sala maga-anak ug kamatayon.”

Kini nagakahulogan ug pagbulag gikan sa Dios, diha saIMPIERNO,saWALAY KATAPUSAN.Pagkamakalilisang! Oo, higala, apan kini matuod.

Kini gikan saKASULATAN. KINI ANG PLANO SA DIOS.Higala,TUMOO KA UG SUNDON MO KINI KARON.Karon mao ang panahonâ€"karon mao ang adlaw aron ikaw maluwas. Ayaw palabya ang kahigayonan, higala.

“Ani-aKARON,ang panahan nga nahamut-an; ani-aKARON,ang adlaw sa kaluwasan”(Taga-Corinto 6:2).

Kon dili pa gani tataw kaayo, balik-balika sa pagbasa hangtud nga imong masabtan kini. Ayaw kini ibutang kon dili nimo masabtan.

PANIGUROHA NGA IKAW MALUWAS. NAGAKINA-HANGLAN IKAW SA KALUWASAN LABAW SA TANANG  MGA BUTANG. KON MAWALA ANG IMONG KALAG, MAWALA KANIMO ANG LANGIT UG MAWALA ANG TANAN. ANG DIOS MOTABANG KANIMO ARON MALUWAS KA KARON.

“Walay bisan unsa nga panulay nga miabut kaninyo, kon dili kadto nga maantus sa tawo; apan ang Dios matinumanon, nga dili motugot nga panulayan kamo sa labaw sa inyong masarangan; kon dili uban sa panulay, magahatag usab Siya ug lutsanan aran kamo makahimo sa pag-antus”(1 Mga Taga-Corinto 10:13).

AYAWpagsalig sa imong pagbati. Kini may kausaban.BAROGIangSAAD SADIOS.KiniDILI GAYUD mausab.

HUMAN IKAW MALUWAS ADUNAY TULO KA MGA BUTANG NGA KINAHANGLAN BANSAYON SA ADLAWADLAW ALANG SA ESPIRITUHANONG PAGTUBO:

PAG-AMPOâ€" Pakigsulti sa Dios.

PAGBASA SA BIBLIYAâ€" ug ang Dios makigsulti kanimo.

PAGSAKSIâ€" ikaw mosulti sa uban alang sa Dios.

EDSA REVOLUTION , Feb. 22-25, 1986

On February 22, Enrile and General Fidel Ramos, commander of the Philippine Constabulary, issued a joint statement demanding Marcos's resignation. They established their rebel headquarters inside Camp Aguinaldo and the adjoining Camp Crame in Metro Manila, which was guarded by several hundred troops. Marcos ordered loyal units to suppress the uprising, but Cardinal Sin, broadcasting over the Catholic-run Radio Veritas (which became the voice of the revolution), appealed to the people to bring food and supplies for the rebels and to use nonviolence to block pro-Marcos troop movements.

Hundreds of thousands responded. In the tense days that followed, priests, nuns, ordinary citizens, and children linked arms with the rebels and faced down, without violence, the tanks and machine guns of government troops. Many of the government troops defected, including the crews of seven helicopter gunships, which seemed poised to attack the massive crowd on February 24 but landed in Camp Crame to announce their support for People's Power. Violent confrontations were prevented. The Philippine troops did not want to wage war on their own people.

Although Marcos held an inauguration ceremony at Malacañang Palace on February 25, it was boycotted by foreign ambassadors (with the exception, in an apparently unwitting gaffe, of a new Soviet ambassador). It was, for the Marcoses, the last, pathetic hurrah. Advised by a United States senator, Paul Laxalt, who had close ties to Reagan, to "cut and cut cleanly," Marcos realized that he had lost United States support for any kind of arrangement that could keep him in power. By that evening, the Marcoses had quit the palace that had been their residence for two decades and were on their way to exile in the United States. Manila's population surged into Malacañang to view the evidence of the Marcos's extravagant life-style (including Imelda's muchpublicized hundreds of pairs of expensive, unworn shoes). An almost bloodless revolution brought Corazon Aquino into office as the seventh president of the Republic of the Philippines.

WORLD WAR II MEMORIES

The outbreak of World War II on December 8, 1941 was after the sneak attack of the Pearl Harbor at
Honolulu, Hawaii on December 7, 1941. But long before the war, the Japanese came to the
Philippines who disguised as businessmen, merchants, fishermen, storeowners, etc. but in truth, they were high ranking officials of the Japanese Imperial Forces.

They made secret plans for the invasion of our country. They had already knew the easy access in several points of the country;  first wave of landing by the Japanese Imperial Army was in Lingayen Gulf; second wave of landing was in Davao followed by the successive bombings in various strategic points of our military installations.

WWII defenseWWII defenseThe foxholes serves as machine guns’ nest or shelters of the USAFFE soldiers on the hills of the barangay Ilihan which were constructed by military engineers in January 1942 right after the invasion of the Japanese Imperial Forces in Lingayen Gulf in Luzon  and in Davao, Mindanao. It was a pincher movement done by the High Command of the Japanese landings in
Cebu and other islands of the Visayas.

The USAFFE Batallion Commander of the 82nd Infantry Division MG Company was Captain Oligario Baura;

below in rank were Executive Officer Lt. Bargayo, Lt. Florencio Blanco, Lt. Ramon Dumadag, Lt. Isidro Solijon, Lt. Flores and other officers of the USAFFE who were assigned at Ilihan Defense Line. This army division was under the command of Col. William F. Sharp who assigned in the
Central Visayas by Let Gen. Douglas Mac Arthur and subsequently under the command of Let. Gen. Jonathan Wainwright as Gen. Mac Arthur was called immediately by President Franklin Roosevelt to take command as Supreme Commander of the Allied Power in the
Pacific
Islands.

Before the landing in
Toledo, the Japanese Imperial Army made sightings and observations along the shores ;  they found out that the barb wire entanglement fixed in position was difficult to attack. Seeing it impossible, they sailed out of town of
Pinamungahan where they landed early dawn of April 10, 1942. Marching along the road leading to the town of
Toledo, there were shootings between the USAFFE soldiers as blocking force who later on fled as they were outnumbered by the enemies.

When the Japanese Army reached the fortified defense line of the USAFFE in the hills of Barangay Ilihan, heavy fighting occurred; the bursting of machine guns and rifles, the crackling continuous sounds of the bullets by the brave USAFFE Soldiers hindered the advance of the enemies. Sad to say that there were support warplanes of the Japanese who dropped incendiary bombs near the openings of foxholes which emitted poison gas to our Filipino defenders.

At sunset, almost of the USAFFE soldiers retreated to nearby mountains with their weapons where in later months they planned to organize Guerilla Movement in coordination/cooperation of the scattered soldiers in order to fight the enemies until the coming of the Allied Liberation Forces led by Gen. Mac Arthur.

As we have learned during that battle, many of the Japanese soldiers perished and were wiped out particularly in the lowlands owing to heavy firing by the soldiers along the trenches at the foothills at the top of the hills.

This is one of the most significant footages in the history of
Toledo.

THE SCRIPTURES We believe that the Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired, and is a perfect treasure of heavenly instruction; and it has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth without any mixture of error for its matter; that it reveals the principles by which God will judge us, and therefore is, and shall remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and opinions shall be tried.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE TRUE GOD We believe the Scriptures teach that there is one, and only one, living and true God, an infinite, intelligent Spirit, whose name is Jehovah, the Maker and Supreme Ruler of heaven and earth; inexpressibly glorious in holiness, and worthy of all possible honor, confidence and love; that in the unity of the Godhead there are three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; equal in every divine perfection, and executing distinct but harmonious offices in the great work of redemption.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE FALL OF MAN We believe that the Scriptures teach that Man was created in holiness, under the law of his Maker; but by voluntary transgression fell from the holy and happy state; in consequence of which all mankind are sinners, not by constraint but choice; being by nature utterly void of that holiness required by the law of God, positively inclined to evil; and therefore under just condemnation to eternal ruin, without defense or excuse.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE WAY OF SALVATION We believe that the Scriptures teach that the salvation of sinners is wholly of grace; through the mediatorial offices of the Son of God; who by the appointment of the Father, freely took upon him our nature, yet without sin; honored the divine law by his personal obedience, and by his death made a full atonement for our sins; that having risen from the dead, he is now enthroned in heaven; and uniting in his wonderful person the tenderest sympathies with divine perfections, he is in every way qualified to be a suitable, a com- passionate, and an all-sufficient Saviour.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JUSTIFICATION We believe the Scriptures teach that the great Gospel blessing which Christ secures to such as believe in him is justification; that justification includes the pardon of sin, and the promise of eternal life on principles of righteousness; that it is bestowed, not in consideration of any works of righteousness which we have done, but solely through faith in the Redeemer's blood; by virtue of which faith his perfect righteousness is freely imputed to us of God; that it brings us into a state of most blessed peace and favor with God, and secures every other blessing needful for time and eternity.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE FREENESS OF SALVATION We believe that the Scriptures teach that the blessings of salvation are made free to all by the Gospel; that it is the immediate duty of all to accept them by cordial, penitent and obedient faith; and that nothing prevents the salvation of the greatest sinner on earth, but his own determined depravity and voluntary rejection of the Gospel; which rejection involves him in an aggravated condemnation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

REGENERATION We believe that the Scriptures teach that in order to be saved, sinners must be regenerated, or born again; that regeneration consists in giving a holy disposition to the mind that it is effected in a manner above our comprehension by the power of the Holy Spirit in connection with divine truth, so as to secure our voluntary obedience to the Gospel; and that its proper evidence appears in the holy fruits of repentance and faith, and newness of life.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

REPENTANCE AND FAITH We believe the Scriptures teach that repentance and faith are sacred duties, and also inseparable graces, wrought in our soul~ by the regenerating Spirit of God; whereby being deeply convinced of our guilt, danger and helplessness and of the way of salvation by Christ, we turn to God with unfeigned contrition, confession and supplication for mercy; at the same time heartily receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as our prophet, priest and king, and relying or him alone as the only and all-sufficient Saviour.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GOD'S PURPOSE OF GRACE We believe the Scriptures teach that election is the eternal purpose of God, according to which he graciously regenerates, sanctifies and saves sinners; that being perfectly consistent with the free agency of man, it comprehends all the means in connection wit~ the end; that is a most glorious display of God's sovereign goodness, being infinitely free, wise, holy and unchangeable, that it utterly excludes boasting and promotes humility, love, prayer, praise, trust in God, and active imitation of his free mercy; that it encourage! the use of means in the highest degree; that it may be ascertained by its effects in all who truly believe the Gospel; that it is the foundation of Christian assurance; and that to ascertain it with regard to ourselves demands and deserves the utmost diligence.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SANCTIFICATION We believe the Scriptures teach that Sanctification is the process by which, according to the will of God, we are made partakers of his holiness; that it is a progressive work; that it is begun in regeneration; and that it is carried on in the hearts of believers by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, the Healer and Comforter, in the continual use of the appointed means especially the word of God, self-examination, self-denial, watchfulness, and prayer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PERSEVERANCE OF SAINTS We believe the Scriptures teach that such only are real believers as endure to the end~ that their persevering attachment to Christ is the grand mark which distinguishes them from superficial professors; that a special Providence watches over their welfare; and they are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE LAW AND GOSPEL We believe the Scriptures teach that the Law of God is the eternal and unchangeable rule of his moral government; that it is holy, just and good; and that the inability which the Scriptures ascribe to fallen men to fulfill its precepts, arise entirely from their love of sin; to deliver them from which, and to restore them through a Mediator to unfeigned obedience to the holy Law, is one great end of the Gospel, and of the means of Grace connected with the establishment of the visible church.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A GOSPEL CHURCH We believe the Scriptures teach that a visible church of Christ is a congregation of baptized believers, associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the Gospel; observing the ordinances of Christ; governed by his laws; and exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by His Word; that its only scriptural officers are Bishops or Pastors, and Deacons whose Qualifications, claims and duties are defined in the Epistles to Timothy and Titus.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BAPTISM AND THE LORD'S SUPPER We believe the Scriptures teach that Christian baptism is the immersion in water of a believer, into the name of the Father, and Son, and Holy Ghost; to show forth in a solemn and beautiful emblem, our faith in the crucified, buried, and risen Saviour, with its effect, in our death to sin and resurrection to a new life; that it is prerequisite to the privileges of a church relation; and to the Lord's Supper, in which the members of the church, by the sacred use of bread and wine, are to commemorate together the dying love of Christ; preceded always by solemn self-examination.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CHRISTIAN SABBATH We believe the Scriptures teach that the first day of the week is the Lord's Day, or Christian Sabbath, and is to be kept sacred to religious purposes, by abstaining from all secular labor and sinful recreations, by the devout observances of all means of grace, both private and public, and by preparation for the rest that remaineth for the people of God.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CIVIL GOVERNMENT We believe the Scriptures teach that civil government is of divine appointment, for the interest and good order of human society; and that magistrates are to be prayed for, conscientiously honored and obeyed; except only in things opposed to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ who is the only Lord of the conscience, and the Prince of the Kings of the earth.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RIGHTEOUS AND WICKED We believe the Scriptures teach that there is a radical and essential difference between the righteous and the wicked; that such only as through faith are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and sanctified by the Spirit of our God, are truly righteous in his esteem; while all such as continue in impenitence and unbelief are in his sight wicked, and under the curse, and this distinction holds among men both in and after death.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE WORLD TO COME We believe that the Scriptures teach that the end of the world is approaching; that at the last day, Christ will descend from heaven, and raise the dead from the grave for final retribution; that a solemn separation will then take place; that the wicked will be adjudged to endless punishment, and the righteous to endless joy; and that this judgment will fix forever the final state of men in heaven or hell, on principles of righteousness

Inspiration & Hope / Re: Confession
February 20, 2009, 02:01:21 PM
I only confess my sin to God

Confession of sins is an integral part of the Christian faith and practice.
The meaning is essentially the same as the criminal one â€" to admit one's
own guilt. Confession of one's sins, or at least of one's sinfulness, is seen
by most churches as a pre-requisite for becoming a Christian.

We all fall short of the glory of God.

Not one was able to even keep the commandments.
only Jesus our Lord could keep them.

We all need to Confess our sins to the Lord and turn away from our sins.

We should Only Confess our sins to God.

Only GOD can forgive you no man has any power

to forgive you of your sin

if you did a man wrong you may ask
him to forgive you but that is the only way

on our best day we all are still unrighteous in the eyes of God.

"
Oh God, please have Mercy upon a sinner like me forgive me of my known and
unknown sins. I believe Jesus Died for me and my sins and was resurected
from the grave so that I may have Eternal Life in Heaven I confess all my
sins with my mouth and I will follow your way . Oh God, forgive me, I'm sorry
for all my shortcomings."

In Jesus' name I pray Amen .

Only the living veterans can avail the lumpsum benefits.

It is unjust.

Does it mean that the living veterans are more heroes because they are still alive today? They fought for the same cause. The dead veterans will be more remembered if their surviving spouse and children will also receive the same benefit.

My father ,  a USAFFE  died in 1995. He started receiving P500 pesos monthly pension until it was increased to P1500 when he died.

Veterans may file in 14 offices

US authorities assure quick action on claims
War vets can go to 14 sites in RP to claim benefits

By JOSEPH G. LARIOSA

CHICAGO, Illinois â€" Filipino World War II veterans can claim their benefits in 14 various offices of the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) in the Philippines, according to a press release issued Wednesday by the office of Sen. Daniel K. Akaka (Dem.-HI), chairman of the US Senate Veterans Affairs committee.

Jesse Broder Van Dyke, press secretary of Akaka, issued a press release, quoting the US Embassy in Manila, identifying the sites and dates where veterans can go to apply for their benefits from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. American authorities have assured smooth and quick action on the war veterans’ claims.

The benefits that were included in The Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 by Sen. Daniel K. Inouye (Dem.-HI), US Senate Appropriations Committee chair, is being facilitated for distribution because most of the recipients are aged between 85 and 90 and are very sickly.

Meanwhile, Vice Consul Roberto T. Bernardo of the Philippine Consulate in Chicago, Illinois was informed by Philippine Ambassador to the United States Willie C. Gaa that Rep. Bob Filner (Dem.-Calif.), chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, will be hosting a reception on Wednesday, Feb. 25, for Filipino war veterans at the Veterans’ Affairs Committee Hearing Room (Room 335, Cannon House Office Building) at the Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

Filner, co-chairman of the Philippines-United States Congressional Friendship Caucus, has expressed the wish that Filipino-American leaders attend the reception.

Aside from the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) Central Office at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City and the Veterans Memorial Medical Center at North Avenue, Quezon City, where veterans can apply from Feb. 19 to 27, 2009 and from Feb. 19 to 20, 2009, respectively, the veterans can also visit the following PVAO offices between Feb. 24 and 26, 2009:

1. National Highway cor. Diversion Rd., Pagdaraoan, San Fernando City, La Union;

2. USAFIPNL Camp Henry T. Allen, Baguio city, Benguet;

3. Old Provincial Capitol Bldg., Iloilo City, Iloilo;

4. CENTCOM, Camp LapuLapu Lahug, Cebu City, Cebu;

5. 126 Gomez St., Tacloban City, Leyte;

6. SOUTHCOM Upper Calarian, Zamboanga del Sur;

7. Door 4, Gutierrez Compound, Abad Santos Avenue, Davao City, Davao del Sur;

8. Provincial Capitol, Batangas City, Batangas;

9. 1-A Callangan Bldg., Bonifacio St., Tuguegarao City, Cagayan;

10. Cleofer’s Bldg., Gen. Hizon Extension, San Fernando City, Pampanga;

11. ANST Bldg., Washington Drive, Legazpi City, Albay; and

12. Camp Evangelista, Patag, Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental.

The press statement said "the United States Department of Veterans Affairs is reaching out to all Filipino WWII veterans regarding the new one-time lump-sum benefit payment signed into law on Feb. 17, 2009. The United States has great respect for the bravery and service of Philippine WWII veterans and for their partnership with the U.S. military in defending freedom."

This new legislation, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, signed by President Barack Obama Tuesday, Feb. 17, in Denver, Colorado, formally recognizes the service of Filipino WWII veterans as active military service in the Armed Forces.

In accordance with the new law, for an individual to be eligible for payment, the US Department of Veterans Affairs must receive the individual’s claim not later than February 16, 2010, which is one year from the date US President Obama signed the historic legislation.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs is working to quickly implement the new US law. Filipino WWII veterans can inquire about and submit claims for the new lumpsum benefit at the US Department of Veterans Affairs Manila Regional Office located at the US Embassy in Manila. The US Department of Veterans Affairs Manila Regional Office will also have representatives available to accept claims at 14 locations throughout the Philippines.

All Filipino WWII veterans are requested to bring the following information and documentation (if applicable) when filing their claims:

Ø Two forms of Identification (such as passport, driver’s license, Senior Citizen ID, Bureau of Post ID, Voter ID, etc. )

Ø VA Claim number

Ø Service Number

Ø Philippine Veterans Affairs Office claim number

Ø Philippine Veterans Affairs Office Pension bank account number

Ø US Passport (if a US Citizen)

In order to provide effective, transparent service, claims will only be accepted from Filipino WWII veterans. All Filipino WW II are encouraged to apply in person at one of the locations listed above on the dates indicated.

If a veteran is unable to appear in person, the US Department of Veterans Affairs Manila Regional Office will arrange to obtain the application in an appropriate manner. Claims from spouses, widows and children of Filipino WWII veterans will not be accepted.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs is working to implement this new law in a timely and efficient manner to ensure all eligible veterans receive their rightful benefits as soon as possible. Although claims are now being accepted, information regarding the actual release of payments will be provided as it becomes available. This information will be available on the US Embassy website at http://manila.usembassy.gov.

In Manila, meanwhile, Sen. Richard Gordon yesterday urged PVAO to make it easier for Filipino war veterans to claim their benefits from the US.

PVAO, Gordon said, should make clear and simple the procedure in claiming the benefits and immediately start a massive and intensive information campaign to help beneficiaries and protect them from unscrupulous individuals.

"Our war veterans are all in their twilight years. Let us not make it hard for them. After all, they are more than deserving to receive the meager benefits which they have long been waiting for," Gordon said.

Gordon said the guidelines and procedures in claiming benefits for eligible and qualified Filipino veterans may create confusion among them and their families who are not even certain if they could avail of the ,000 from the Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation Fund which the US Congress had earlier passed.

After President Obama signed the 7-billion economic stimulus bill, where provisions granting recognition and benefits to Filipino veterans contained, veterans and/or their families started lining up at the PVAO office and the US embassy to avail of the compensation.

"I urge the PVAO to act swiftly on any confusion that may be created regarding the guidelines and procedures in claiming the benefits. Those claimants who are outright considered as eligible should immediately be given what is due to them," he said.

Gordon also asked the PVAO to set up help desks and hotlines and launch a massive information campaign to inform and educate the veterans of the guidelines for obtaining the grant.

"It is imperative that the relevant government agencies remain vigilant and steadfast in their commitment to public service, especially in the service of our veterans who have risked their lives so that we may now bask in the light of freedom and democracy," Gordon said.

Gordon earlier lobbied the US Congress for the passage of an equity bill that would remove much of the stain and dishonor done by the US government to the dignity and true sacrifice of Filipino WWII veterans and of the Philippines as a nation.

Aside from this, he also authored Senate Bill 142 which was signed into law as Republic Act 9499 which effectively amends RA 6948, or an Act Standardizing and Upgrading the Benefits for Military Veterans and their Dependents. The law provides that Filipino veterans would continue receiving benefits from the Philippine government even if they are also entitled to the same benefits from the US government.

For his part, PVAO Administrator Ernesto Carolina urged Filipino WWII veterans to apply for the lump-sum benefits approved by the US Congress immediately so that their families could receive the benefits even if they die while their applications are being processed.

Carolina said the US Department of Veterans Affairs had already sent representatives to the Philippines to coordinate the expected surge of claims for benefits of Filipino veterans, following the approval of the US Congress of 8 million in lump-sum benefits for living Filipino veterans.

Carolina said only applications filed personally by the living Filipino veterans would be eligible for approval, although their families would be allowed to receive the lump-sum benefits of ,000 to ,000 even if they die while their applications are being processed.

"It’s very important that the veteran should file immediately so that in case of their death, the surviving spouse can avail of the benefits," Carolina said.

The US Congress included in its economic stimulus package the appropriation of 8 million for lump-sum benefits to Filipino veterans of World War II, regardless of whether they acquired US citizenship or not.

But only living veterans may be able to apply for the lump-sum benefits, and families of veterans who have already died are not eligible to apply for the benefits in their stead.

Carolina said only veterans who are living and have filed their applications for lump-sum benefits would be qualified to receive the benefits approved by Congress.

"Realistically, it’s sad if the veteran has already died just days before the economic stimulus package has been approved, because it does not matter if the veteran died 60 years ago or 60 minutes ago," Carolina said.

He said the scheme of paying benefits only to living veterans of a war more than 60 years ago seems unfair, but he said the practical response to the granting of lump-sum benefits is to accept the benefits.

"The negotiating stance used to be that we want either all or nothing. But the Americans say that if you want all or nothing, you will get nothing," he said.

Carolina said that by accepting the lump-sum benefits, Filipino veterans, regardless of whether they had acquired US citizenship or not, would have chances of gaining "collateral benefits" because their stint in the US military during World War II had already been recognized. (with reports by Hannah L. Torregoza and David Cagahastian)

It would be just if  those veterans who died will also  receive this benefit through their legal heirs.

Does it mean that the living veterans became more heroes because they are still alive today? THey have the same battle ground. They should have equal benefits to those who passed away.

The heroic deeds of the dead veterans will be  more remembered if their legal benefeciaries will also receive the same benefits of those who are still living today.

Equity for Filipino WWII Veterans Sent to President Obama for Signature
Written by Imperial Valley News
Saturday, 14 February 2009
Washington, DC - House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Bob Filner (D-CA) released the following statement on the Filipino Veterans provisions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act approved by Congress and sent to President Obama:

Sixty-three years ago, President Truman signed the Rescission Acts which denied the Filipino veterans of World War II equal status as American veterans, stripping them of equal recognition, compensation, and benefits.  These Filipino soldiers, who swore an oath of allegiance to the United States, fought side-by-side with American soldiers under the American flag.  Despite the gallant efforts of the Filipino soldiers during the war, Congress still passed the Rescission Acts, which denied these veterans their rightfully earned respect, benefits, and honor.

“Twelve years ago, I joined Filipino veterans in protest in front of the White House and demanded equitable treatment.  Together, we pleaded with America’s leaders to acknowledge the contributions of these veterans, recognize the injustice visited upon them, and act to correct this injustice.  Unfortunately, the historical record remained blotted and Filipino veterans were not granted the rights they had earned and deserve.

“Today, I am thrilled that the 111th Congress has resolutely acted to acknowledge the Filipino veterans for their steadfast contributions to the successful outcome of World War II.  H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, corrects this long-standing inequity, recognizes their noble service, and provides a one-time payment of $15,000 to Filipino veterans who are American citizens and $9,000 to veterans who are Philippine citizens.  This compensation is intended to assist them in their later years and provide the dignity and honor that they earned as heroic veterans of the United States.

“This victory, however, comes with a note of sadness.  While approximately 300,000 Filipinos fought under the American flag during World War II, less than 18,000 are alive today to celebrate this vindication.  Just two months ago, the Filipino veteran community lost one of their most tireless advocates, Joaquin Tejada.  I know that his dedication to this cause was vital and I am certain that his smile continues to shine brightly.  I salute these fallen heroes.

As we celebrate this momentous occasion, I call on all Americans to join me in remembering and honoring the Filipino veterans who fought for our freedom.”

Animal Bites and Rabies
How to Prevent Rabies
What you can do to help prevent the spread of rabies?

Be a responsible pet owner:
Keep vaccinations up-to-date for all dogs, cats and ferrets. This requirement is important not only to keep your pets from getting rabies, but also to provide a barrier of protection to you if your animal is bitten by a rabid wild animal.
Keep your pets under direct supervision so they do not come in contact with wild animals. If your pet is bitten by a wild animal, seek veterinary assistance for the animal immediately.
Call your local animal control agency to remove any stray animals from your neighborhood. They may be unvaccinated and could be infected by the disease.
Spay or neuter your pets to help reduce the number of unwanted pets that may not be properly cared for or regularly vaccinated.
Avoid direct contact with unfamiliar animals:

Enjoy wild animals (raccoons, skunks, foxes) from afar. Do not handle, feed, or unintentionally attract wild animals with open garbage cans or litter.

Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home. Do not try to nurse sick animals to health. Call animal control or an animal rescue agency for assistance.

Teach children never to handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even if they appear friendly. "Love your own, leave other animals alone" is a good principle for children to learn.

Prevent bats from entering living quarters or occupied spaces in homes, churches, schools, and other similar areas, where they might come in contact with people and pets.

When traveling abroad, avoid direct contact with wild animals and be especially careful around dogs in developing countries.
Rabies is common in developing countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America where dogs are the major reservoir of rabies. Tens of thousands of people die of rabies each year in these countries. Before traveling abroad, consult with a health care provider, travel clinic, or your health department about the risk of exposure to rabies, preexposure prophylaxis, and how you should handle an exposure, should it arise.

Hoping that this amout will be received to the qualified veterans.

COCKFIGHTING is so central to Philippine culture that Rolando Blanco, vice president of the country’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, has little hope of persuading the government to stop it.

“How can we fight cockfighting when our lawmakers are cock fighters and breeders?” he asked.

Supporters of a ban acknowledge that fighting cocks’ killer instinct is encoded in their genes, but argue that nature is more forgiving than cockfight organizers, who arm the roosters with razors and make sure they can’t escape the ring. Chickens don’t win much sympathy in the Philippines.

“Our laws protecting animals mainly concern endangered species and bigger animals, like dogs, cats, horses, whale sharks and monkey-eating eagles,” Blanco said.

Filipinos were staging cockfights when Ferdinand Magellan came ashore in 1521, and more than 5 million roosters will clash in the country’s cockpits this year, said Manny Berbano, publisher of the glossy Pit Games magazine and head of National Gamefowl Training Center.

With six national TV shows devoted to the sport, Filipinos can enjoy the carnage from the comfort of their homes almost every night of the week.

The Philippine economy benefits by more than $1 billion a year from cockfight betting, breeding farms and the business of selling feed and drugs, including steroids, that bulk up the birds for two years before their fighting instinct kicks in, Berbano estimated.

In the stands at the coliseum, bet-takers â€" called kristos after the Tagalog word for Christ â€" probably handled more than $400,000 in wagers in a single night during the Slasher Cup II, he said.

A barrel-shaped former Coca-Cola executive, Berbano is Philippine cockfighting’s less garish answer to Don King. He is a cockpit evangelist with a PowerPoint pitch. One of Berbano’s closing slides invokes the words of Abraham Lincoln, from a quote resurrected in 1963 in a defense of the sport in an Oklahoma court.

“As long as the Almighty permitted intelligent men, created in his image and likeness, to fight in public and kill each other while the world looks on approvingly, it’s not for me to deprive the chickens of the same privilege,” Lincoln told Americans demanding a federal cockfighting ban a century earlier.

Lincoln’s words aside, opponents of the sport have kept up their campaign for a ban for more than a century, and now Louisiana is the last legal bastion of American cockfighting.

As cockpits across the U.S. closed, or went underground, American breeders continued to produce pedigreed game fowl, maintaining bloodlines that date to 19th century England and Ireland. Some made millions of dollars exporting fighting cocks to countries such as the Philippines and Mexico, where the sport is still legal and enormously popular.

Berbano proudly paid an Alabama breeder $5,000 for a cock from a long line of champions, a thoroughbred sweater yellow legged hatch. But a new law is expected to cut off multimillion-dollar exports of American game fowl.

Last month, President Bush signed legislation that makes it a felony to transport across state lines, or to export, dogs and chickens used in fights. The penalty is up to three years in jail and a fine of as much as $250,000.

The Humane Society of the United States says that will help prevent American breeders from exporting fighting animals and “puts increased pressure on the airlines to stop shipping roosters to cockfighting hot spots.”

ATLANTAN Johnnie Phillips was one of at least 17 Americans with roosters in the competition for this year’s Slasher Cup. Bald, and with powerful, tattooed forearms, the retired AT&T worker learned to love cockfighting from his father while growing up on a farm in Alabama.

Phillips, 61, says he doesn’t get why governments would ban fighting cocks from doing what comes naturally, when they aren’t much good for anything else â€" especially eating.

“They get 3 months old and they’re like chewing leather,” he said.

As animal rights activists won more state bans on cockfighting, staying ahead of the law became part of the sport for die-hard fans like Phillips. He was arrested on a misdemeanor charge with about 65 other people when more than a dozen police raided an Ohio cockpit in 1972.

“It was a Saturday night and they brought the county school bus out there to take us to the courthouse,” he recalled. Phillips got out of the local lockup by posting a $50 bond, and after paying the fine, he got a $15 refund.

Some states are tougher on cockfighting these days, but it’s still only a misdemeanor offense in 16 states, mainly in the South and West.

Phillips bred game fowl on a 33-acre farm until he sold it five years ago. He has won his share of derbies, but never enough to make a living from the shrinking fight circuit. He’s afraid the new ban on exports will kill off centuries-old bloodlines.

“If you don’t fight chickens, they go downhill,” he said. “To keep ‘em good, you’ve gotta fight ‘em and recognize the good ones.”

HERE in Araneta Coliseum, the arena that has held some of the Philippines’ marquee events, including a Mass by Pope John Paul II, rich and poor roared and winced at the clattering flurry of attacks, and hushed as a winning rooster pondered its final move.

In the wings, gaffers tied blades called tari to roosters’ legs; the softer spurs they were born to attack with had been trimmed to rounded nubbins to make way for the steel blades tempered to killer strength with alloys such as titanium and cobalt.

Each new competitor, also shorn of its red comb and wattle, was cradled like a fragile child in its handler’s arms on the walk to the cockpit from a gloomy hallway. A large, wooden statue of a crucified Christ decorated with fragrant jasmine garlands stood watch at one end.

Sparring roosters, known as heaters, pecked at the fighting cocks to get them riled up, as handlers restrained them by their tail plumes and bettors and kristos waved and hollered at each other like frantic floor traders during a stock market meltdown.

In the final seconds before the starting buzzer, a male nurse dressed in white swabbed the hackles of each fighter to test for any dirty tricks, such as feathers laced with cyanide. Then the cocks’ tari were unsheathed, and a cockpit technician wiped each blade with gauze soaked in rubbing alcohol.

Primed for blood, the roosters were released from either side of two center lines. Some crowed as the crowd bellowed. Others went straight for the kill, flapping above their opponents, wildly stabbing at anything they could strike with their blades.

When the fighters lay panting in the dirt, the referee, or sentenciador, gently picked both up by the hackle feathers at arm’s length, and gently brought them to head-to-head, waiting for one to make the regulation two pecks needed for an outright victory. In the few bouts in which neither rooster had the strength, or will, left for that, the sentenciador declared a draw. And the bettors moaned.

At 4 a.m. on the final night, the 2007 World Slasher Cup was finally clinched, with a record of seven wins and a draw, by the eighth rooster entered by Wilson Ong, a Philippine businessman.

His cock died soon after pecking the limp, bleeding final challenger twice. Handler Alfred Pangilinan, 36, cradled the dead winner in his arms for the long trip home to Guagua, a town 50 miles north of Manila.

There, on the edge of the training farm, in a graveyard of champions, Pangilinan dug a deep hole and buried the bird

Based on study, the most nutritious part of the ampalaya plants are the leaves.
The young leaves (udlot) can be a substitute for malunggay leaves for cooking
any vegetable dish especially 'tinunuan'. The leaves are made into Ampalaya
Plus capsule.

To lessen the bitter taste of the ampalaya fruit for cooking any recipe, remove or
scrap the  white layer inside.

Where the Roman gods and goddesses had nectar and ambrosia, Filipinos have buwad and ginamos.

With just these, there’s no limit to how much rice we can consume.  Except, perhaps, for the world food crisis.  But this is just to emphasize that a sliver of buwad or a teaspoon of ginamos can go a very long way on the Filipino dinner table.

In their basic process, pag-gamos and pagbuwad are merely ways of preserving the excess of a fisherman’s catch for the day.  Sometimes, though, they are sought and preferred even when fresh fish and other seafood are plentiful.  Both are begun with cleaning and salting but the ginamos are left to soak in a bottle or a jar for days or weeks and the buwad is left to dry under the sun until one gets the desired degree of dryness.  Not far from ginamos is tinabal.  The fish is salted heavily and left to season in its own juices.  Tinabal can be any size, from a labajan to a molmol but I don’t know if just about any fish can be tinabal.

For the farmer or any worker who needs to stock up on carbohydrates for a hard day’s work, ginamos is one of the cheapest ways to build up an appetite.  And what an appetite.  Have you ever tried to stop someone during a meal of ginamos bolinaw, inun-onang borot-borot, and mounds of rice?  Or of ginamos nga ojap sautéed with a few slices of pork and mounds of rice?  Or how about ginamos nga tagimtim, suka, lemonsito, and, again, mounds of rice?

The same is true with buwad.  The Filipino breakfast table seems incomplete without a plateful of buwad bolinaw, potpot, or mangsi fried crisp in edible oil or somewhat blackened after a few minutes on top of red-hot coals.  What is humbang nangka or nilaw-oy without flakes of buwad as subak?  And can you contemplate life without the delicacy of the buwad nokus or danggit.

And don’t get me started on tinabal.  Just imagine a heavily salted molmol about a week away from becoming ginamos.  How glorious would it be when it’s sautéed in oil, garlic, onions, and a lot of red, ripe tomatoes?

When I was still a kid, my father would sometimes joke, whenever we came upon a really good batch of ginamos, that it was tasty because it had fallen into a kanal, was retrieved from it, and then sold to us.  Even in those times that I believed the joke, I would still eat the ginamos.  In the years that have passed I’ve come to learn that the kanal joke is universal and that I was not alone in insisting to eat ginamos in spite of it.

Filipino humor has more to say on ginamos.  We know of a variety of preparations that have been shortened to suggest morbid execution.  There’s the classic gipusil, or ginamos pus-ag sili.  There’s also gipriso, ginamos pritohon nga solo, although I personally believe that it’s better when it’s gikahon, ginamos ug kamatis gisahon.  Then comes gidunggab, ginamos dungag gabi.  Lastly, there’s the dread gitook, ginamos tongtongag ok-ok.

Whether you believe in the kanal joke or not or have personally experienced gitook, if you want to be sure about how sanitary your ginamos is, you can always make your own.  You will need a glass jar, some small fish (your choice of kujog, bolinaw, or mubgas) or tagimtim or sisi, and some salt.  Rub the salt all over the fish.  How much salt you use will depend on your taste.  To this, you can add a few lemonsito leaves or a few cloves of ahos to make the ginamos fragrant.  Put the fish in the jar and let alone for days or weeks until ma-gamos na.  The procedure for making buwad is pretty much evident in its name, just keep it out of the reach of cats and other creatures.

One may be driven to eat them every day out of necessity or, if you’re better off, you can eat them as you please and by choice.  Whatever your status, buwad and ginamos have us Filipinos bound as one people.  It may be through our stomachs, but that’s not much further from our hearts.

Inspiration & Hope / Re: Confession
February 16, 2009, 02:05:32 PM

Question: "What does the Bible say about confession of sin to a priest?"

Answer: The concept of confession of sin to a priest is nowhere taught in Scripture. First, the New Testament does not teach that there are to be priests in the New Covenant. Instead, the New Testament teaches that all believers are priests. 1 Peter 2:5-9 describes believers as a “holy priesthood” and a “royal priesthood.” Revelation 1:6 and 5:10 both describe believers as “a kingdom and priests.” In the Old Covenant, the faithful had to approach God through the priests. The priests were mediators between the people and God. The priests offered sacrifices to God on behalf of the people. That is no longer necessary. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we can now approach God’s throne with boldness (Hebrews 4:16). The temple veil tearing in two at Jesus’ death was symbolic of the dividing wall between God and humanity being destroyed. We can approach God directly, ourselves, without the use of a human mediator. Why? Because Jesus Christ is our great High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-15; 10:21), and the only mediator between us and God (1 Timothy 2:5). The New Testament teaches that there are to be elders (1 Timothy 3), deacons (1 Timothy 3), bishops (Titus 1:6-9), and pastors (Ephesians 4:11) â€" but not priests.

When it comes to confession of sin, believers are told in 1 John 1:9 to confess their sins to God. God is faithful and just to forgive our sins as we confess them to Him. James 5:16 speaks of confessing our trespasses “to one another,” but this is not the same as confessing sins to a priest as the Roman Catholic Church teaches. Priests / church leaders are nowhere mentioned in the context of James 5:16. Further, James 5:16 does not link forgiveness of sins with the confession of sins “to one another.”

The Roman Catholic Church bases their practice of confession to a priest primarily on Catholic tradition. Catholic do point to John 20:23, “If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven." From this verse, Catholics claim that God gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins, and that authority was passed on to the successors of the apostles, e.g. the bishops and priests of the Roman Catholic Church. There are several problems with this interpretation. (1) John 20:23 nowhere mentions confession of sin. (2) John 20:23 nowhere promises, or even hints, that the authority to forgive sins would be passed on to the successors of the apostles. Jesus’ promise was specifically directed to the apostles. (3) The New Testament nowhere states that the apostles would even have successors to their apostolic authority. Similarly, Catholics point to Matthew 16:19 and 18:18 (binding and loosing) as evidence for the Catholic Church’s authority to forgive sins. The same three above points apply equally to these Scriptures.

Again, the concept of confession of sin to a priest is nowhere taught in Scripture. We are to confess our sins to God (1 John 1:9). As New Covenant believers, we do not need mediators between us and God. We can go to God directly because of Jesus’ sacrifice for us. 1 Timothy 2:5, “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

Christ is the one and only mediator between God and man (1 Tim. 2:5; Heb. 8:6; 9:15; 12:24)...It can not be made any clearer in the scriptures that God wants to communicate with us directly, and to be cautious of those who try to step in to mediate.

1 Timothy 2 does not say that God wants us only to communicate with Jesus. It says there is only one mediator between God and man, which is a different thing. The passage does not say we should be cautious of asking people to pray for us. It doesn't do anything of the sort. The chapter begins requiring intercessory prayer by 3rd parties, indicating that it actually helps bring people to salvation and knowledge of truth. Any mother who prays for her children knows that.

1. I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone ...This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4. who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

We cannot read the rest of the chapter without considering that overarching idea. I think that Christians in heaven pray through Christ much better than you and me. They are much closer to Christ than you and me. Evangelicals pray for each other, and they don't say they are taking God's place. When we pray for one another we are participating in the mediation, we are not the mediator. Catholics feel that saints in heaven, including Mary, can pray for us just as well (or infinitely better) than our friends on earth.

In Hebrews 8:6, it says Jesus has obtained a more excellent ministry than any of the high priests. In 9:15 and 12:24 the passage goes on to say he is the mediator of a New Covenant, Catholics fully agree. We fully agree he is the mediator. We think Christians in heaven are a heck of a lot more aware of who Christ is than we are. The Bible says that he has helpers that participate in his ministry by his invitation. We believe he has invited Christians on both sides of heaven to do that.

When a saint enters into the joy of their Master, they are "put in charge of many things" (Mat 25:21)

Saints are serious prayer warriors. I don't think that praying with the Saints detracts from the worship of God anymore than praying with friends detracts from worship of God, which I do a lot. Saints are not all knowing, but they know a heck of a lot more about this spiritual game than me. They are creatures. This does not take away the tremendous benefit we can get from communing with them. Catholics think "their intercession is their most exalted service to God's plan. We can and should ask them to intercede for us and for the whole world" (Catechism 2683)

What are Christian saints according to the Bible?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question: "What are Christian saints according to the Bible?"

Answer: The word saint comes from the Greek word "hagios" which means “consecrated to God, holy, sacred, pious." It is almost always used in the plural, “saints.” "…Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he did to Your saints at Jerusalem" (Acts 9:13). "Now as Peter was traveling through all those regions, he came down also to the saints who lived at Lydda" (Acts 9:32). "And this is just what I did in Jerusalem; not only did I lock up many of the saints in prisons … “(Acts 26:10). There is only one instance of the singular use and that is "Greet every saint in Christ Jesus…" (Philippians 4:21). In Scripture there are 67 uses of the plural “saints” compared to only one use of the singular word “saint.” Even in that one instance, a plurality of saints is in view “…every saint…” (Philippians 4:21).

The idea of the word “saint” is a group of people set apart for the Lord and His kingdom. There are three references referring to godly character of saints; "that you receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints …" (Romans 16:2). "For the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:12). "But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints" (Ephesians 5:3).

Therefore, Scripturally speaking, the “saints” are the body of Christ, Christians, the church. All Christians are considered saints. All Christian are saints…and at the same time are called to be saints. 1 Corinthians 1:2 states it clearly, “To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy…” The words “sanctified” and “holy” come from the same Greek root as the word that is commonly translated “saints.” Christians are saints by virtue of their connection with Jesus Christ. Christians are called to be saints, to increasingly allow their daily life to more closely match their position in Christ. This is the Biblical description and calling of the saints.

How does the Roman Catholic understanding of “saints” compare with the Biblical teaching? Not very well. In Roman Catholic theology, the saints are in Heaven. In the Bible, the saints are on earth. In Roman Catholic teaching, a person does not become a saint unless he/she is “beatified” or “canonized” by the Pope or prominent bishop. In the Bible, everyone who has received Jesus Christ by faith is a saint. In Roman Catholic practice, the saints are revered, prayed to, and in some instances, worshipped. In the Bible, saints are called to revere, worship, and pray to God alone.

Bible Study / Re: Saints of the Day
February 13, 2009, 12:24:50 PM
I'm reading a book now that touches on some of the history of what makes a saint....

At first, "saint" was a term Christians used to refer to each other, but especially to those who knew the earthly Jesus. Peter, Paul, James and John were especially considered saints.

It quickly became a reference to those who were martyred for their faith--Stephen, Paul, Peter. Those who followed the "way" of the cross to martyrdom.

But at first, there was a sort of unity between church authorities (Peter, Paul) and those called "saint." The same way that there was a unity of prophet, holy man and leader in Moses.

Later, especially as Christianity spread (and was eventually no longer as persecuted), hermits were considered saints because they took up a cross of self-denial and world-denial in the name of holiness. Not martyrdom, but a death-to-self.

Still no official process for discerning who was a saint--it was more by popular acclaim and recognition of holiness, humility, charity, prayerfulness, self- and world-denial, etc.

But as hermits were considered saints, there opened a bit of a gap: Those in authority were not automatically considered saints, as the Apostles were. The hermits were outside the authority structure, just as later prophets after Moses were not kings, but outside the religious and political authority structure.

This continued with figures like Francis and Theresa, Catherine of Siena and many others: monks, nuns, etc. With figures like Francis, you have not a hermit so much as both a mystic and a servant of the poor--unlike some mystics, he didn't withdraw from the world like a hermit, although he had his own creative and thorough means of self-denial.

Under that dual (at least) mystic-servant umbrella, there are other mystic-saints, and also other saints who were considered servants of the poor.

And still, a number of popes and bishops are considered saints: Nicolas of Mira (on whom some of the Santa Claus stuff is based) was a bishop, as was Martin of Tours, and others. Pope St. Gregory the Great, and others.

Jerome was both a hermit and a scholar-translator. There is a long tradition of scholar-saints, like Thomas Aquinas and Augustine (also a bishop).

Eventually, after more than a thousand years, they decided there should be an official process. Sometimes it seemed that popular acclamation of a saint elevated people of questionable virtue to sainthood. Having a process with checks and balances, and the official stamp of authority, seemed wise. It was a sort of innovation at first, but one we assume in faith was in harmony with the orginal seed of faith.

The process requires miracles and proofs, and there's a "devil's advocate" (so-called) - or used to be - who looks with care and some skepticism on any claims that might be over-blown, and tries to ensure that the person up for sainthood is actually worthy of the official title. And there are steps along the way. You don't go from nobody to saint in a day. You have to get promoted, sort of, in a step-by-step process.

When one reads through the lives of the saints, one is often struck by the diversity, although the church has favored priests and celebates who belong to religious orders far more than married folks. There are a some exceptions. Two examples: Thomas More, and a 20th century European woman who refused an abortion in spite of the fact that doctors told her a pregnancy would threaten her life--and she died either giving birth or shortly thereafter.

There were other saints who were once married, but separated and got themselves into monestaries and convents before becoming saints. Not exactly the type of role model for those who believe strongly in the sacrament of marriage, but there's a saint for everyone, or just about, we hope.

We still use the term "saint" in the more informal sense: We call saintly people "saints" although it's not official. And all the baptised are considered saints in terms of our calling. Baptism is a very optimistic thing in that way. There is hope for us all, for nothing is impossible with God.

Hebrews 12:5-11 (New King James Version)
5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:

“ My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD,
      Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
6 For whom the LORD loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives.”[a]

7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Sa Super Balita, Feb.4, 2008, local newspaper in Davao City revealed that it was solemnized in Dauis Church, May 11, 2009. Wala man giingon nga gikasal sa Mayor o judge.

Pasayloon gihapon, according to 1 John 1 :9 apan dunay silot.

I think , I have commented so much. I am apologizing if I haved said  many derogatory words.  I will end at this point.

Duna diri naggamit ug organic fertilizer sama sa chicken dung, carabao manure and other wastes sa iyang home garden.
