The Queen of Versailles: farewell to the American dream
The recession turned The Queen of Versailles, a documentary attempting to chronicle the excesses of America’s super-rich, into something much more affecting, finds David Gritten.

In 2007, American photographer Lauren Greenfield hit on an idea for a documentary film: one that would shine a light on the conspicuous consumption practised by the country’s most wealthy people.
Greenfield knew it would be ideal to concentrate on one super-rich family, and she got lucky: at a Beverly Hills reception thrown by Versace, she met and befriended Jackie Siegel, wife of billionaire timeshare mogul David Siegel. She photographed one of Jackie’s handbags, an absurdly expensive number (it became one of Time magazine’s photos of the year), and began following her around.
For a documentary maker, Jackie Siegel was pure gold â€" friendly and co-operative, gossipy and candid. And she looked exactly as you’d expect a super-rich trophy wife to look: in her forties, a former beauty queen with blonde hair, a golden tan and a formidable cleavage.
Yet what clinched the Siegels as ideal subjects for Greenfield was their extraordinary ambition. They had plans to build the largest single-family home in the United States, near Orlando, Florida â€" a 90,000 sq ft palace with 15 bedrooms, 30 bathrooms, 11 kitchens, six pools, a full-service health spa, indoor skating rink and a stadium tennis court seating 200 people. It would be loosely modelled on the floor plan of Versailles â€" though Louis XVI had overlooked the need for a sushi kitchen â€" and named after it.
Greenfield began shooting Jackie, David, their eight children and their grotesquely opulent lifestyle.

But then events conspired to change the Siegels’ plans and Greenfield’s film profoundly. In 2008 the global recession hit, economies collapsed and banks cut back on lending. According to the film, David Siegel had been relaxed about the amount of debt he was carrying, but now the fortunes of Westgate, his timeshare corporation, began to plummet.
Now Greenfield had an arguably even more compelling subject â€" a “riches to rags story”, as David Siegel called it. Thus the first section of The Queen of Versailles is a detached, mildly amused cinéma verité account of people with unimaginable wealth. But it becomes the story of a family forced to cope with an apparent catastrophic reduction in their circumstances.
Initially, the Siegels seem far from sympathetic people. Their excesses mark them as greedy, thoughtless and arrogant. David, who is 31 years older than his wife, would commission vanity portraits of them, one of which features him dressed in a king’s robe; others represent the couple as characters from Ancient Rome. At one point he alludes to his influence in getting George W Bush elected in 2000, but then clams up, saying: “It might not necessarily have been legal.”
But it’s part of Greenfield’s skill that one does come to feel for the Siegels, even if their financial problems â€" including their household staff being reduced from 15 to one â€" seem like ones most of us would be happy to handle.
The film, Greenfield says, “started out as a morality tale about the American dream and our values, and ended up being more affecting. People might not have related to David and Jackie at all if they had just stayed up there.”
Indeed. It’s sobering how rapidly the Siegels’ luxury lifestyle collapses into seeming squalor without a small army of retainers to maintain it. The eight children, unused to tidying up after themselves, soon leave the house (a mere 26,000
sq ft) looking shabby and untidy: the family’s countless pets relieve themselves on floors and carpets, and their mess stays where it is. Holed up in a relatively small room stacked with his office documents, David Siegel appears slowly to sink into depression as he tries to improve the fortunes of his business empire.
The hapless Jackie teeters around on high heels, unable to cope. She can barely cook, or take care of the children. Yet curiously, one warms to her. Greenfield certainly did: “She’s really smart, she has an engineering degree, but she realised her beauty would take her further. She has a warm heart, she has fun with her kids. But domestic skills are not her strong point.”
In the film, David Siegel insisted he would dig himself out of his economic hole if it took him his whole life, but Greenfield chose to stop shooting her film last November. This was the point that Siegel’s company sold its interest in its flagship property â€" an imposing tower block in Las Vegas which had remained empty. By this time Westgate had laid off thousands of employees and the Siegels had given up hope of ever moving into Versailles and put the still-unfinished house on the market.
The Queen of Versailles, which is partly financed by the BBC’s Storyville documentary strand, opened the Sundance Festival to rave reviews; Greenfield picked up a directing award. The film opened in the US last month, and is a hit on the independent art-house circuit.
But Greenfield’s dealings with the Siegels don’t end there. While Jackie has professed herself delighted with The Queen of Versailles and has accompanied the director to screenings of the film, David is deeply unhappy with it. He is suing Greenfield for defamation, claiming that Westgate remains a profitable company and that the film is “a self-serving reality TV narrative rather than a true and honest documentary”. Greenfield and her legal advisers are confident David’s claim has no merit.
Still, The Queen of Versailles does share with the best of reality TV a certain car-crash quality; you can’t turn your gaze away from the Siegels’ astonishing fall from grace.
As for Versailles, it remains unfinished and unsold. But it could be yours for $65 million.

The Unreal Housewife of Orlando:
The Queen of Versailles
by John Powers

“The rich are different than you and me,” F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, to which Ernest Hemingway replied, “Yes, they have more money.” It’s hard not to think that they’re both right while watching The Queen of Versailles, Lauren Greenfield’s highly amusing (if occasionally slippery) new documentary that uses the rise and fall of a billionaire and his wife as a metaphor for a pre-crash America in which millions didn’t just live beyond their means but did it on a grand scale.

Nobody did it grander than David and Jackie Siegel, an exhibitionistic Orlando couple whose gaudy, gilded lives could have been scripted by some brilliantly opportunistic producer hoping for a show on Bravo. In the opening 45 minutes, we watch the Siegels (whose fortune comes from selling time-share resorts) prove that there’s absolutely no connection between wealth and taste. Seeing themselves as dreamers rather than vulgarians, they are building their fantasy home, a 90,000-square-foot mansion modeled on Versailles that, when completed, will be the largest single-family house in the United States. (To put this in perspective, that’s nearly three times the size of Zuccotti Park, where Occupy Wall Street was protesting the gap between the richest 1 percent and the rest of us.) When they’re not buying thingsâ€"and for the Siegels, shopping is almost a sacramentâ€"they’re hosting beauty pageant contestants, whom the seventysomething David ogles and flirts with, while joking with the 40-year-old Jackie about trading her in for two 20-year-olds.

Then the financial crisis hits. David develops “cash-flow problems” and the dream home becomes a $100 million folly. Suddenly the Siegels must cut back, laying off servants, losing their private jet, and betraying a sense of reality so gaga you think they have to be kidding. “How did you like your first time flying commercial?” Jackie asks one of her young sons at one point, and then heads off to Hertz where she’s startled that her rental car doesn’t come with a driver. Where David seems like a flat-out creepâ€"he hints vaingloriously about helping George W. Bush steal Florida in the 2000 electionâ€"Jackie appears to have a warm heart beating beneath her cartoonishly enhanced chest. Indeed, this onetime beauty queen is rather likable, although her level of blind cluelessness about the world around her makes Marie Antoinette look like Hillary Clinton. Not that we feel much sympathy. After all, Jackie and her husband could be the poster couple for the underlying immorality of the mortgage crisis: The Siegels made their fortune by urging people far poorer than themselves into chasing the fantasy of living like kings; that is, they got them to sign contracts they could never afford.

Not surprisingly, the world has moved on since The Queen of Versailles first premiered (and won Greenfield a directing prize) at Sundance. The Siegels have not only complained that the film presents events out of sequence to make them look bad, but David has filed a lawsuit, claiming that the film defamed him by implying that his company, Westgate Resorts, was on the verge of bankruptcy. In fact, he says, his business is doing so well that they’re now finishing up that whopping mansion.

All of which brings us back to Fitzgerald and to the ending of The Great Gatsby, whose nouveau riche hero has been pursuing the fantasy he associates with the green light at the end of Daisy Buchanan’s dock. “Gatsby believed in the green light,” Fitzgerald tells us, “the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matterâ€"to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther.” The Siegels’ dream of transcendence may be misguided, even silly, but what makes it engrossing is that it’s so profoundly American.

New Details From Libya Consulate Attack: State Department Abandons Claim Of Protest Outside Gates
www.huffingtonpost.com  |  By AP/The Huffington Post
Posted: 10/09/2012 9:40 pm EDT Updated: 10/10/2012 7:57 am EDT

The deadly September attack on a U.S. consulate in Libya was not precipitated by an anti-American protest, as had originally been reported, the State Department disclosed Tuesday night. According to reports from ABC and the Associated Press, the State Department now acknowledges that "gunfire and explosions near the front gate" were the first signs of danger precipitating the attacks that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

This revelation stands in contrast to the story originally reported by the Obama administration and others, who claimed that a protest against the anti-Islam film "The Innocence of Muslims" outside the American consulate was co-opted by violent extremists.

The administration has come under harsh criticism from conservative critics in recent weeks over its actions before and after the attack. The first congressional hearing on the subject is scheduled for Wednesday.

Below is a detailed chronology of the attack, as the State Department now claims it played out (via the AP):

Sept. 10-11, 2012:

Stevens arrives in Benghazi and holds meetings on and off the consulate grounds on Sept. 10. He spends the night, and for the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the U.S. holds meetings only inside the compound. It is an enclosed area about 300 yards long by 100 yards wide, with a 9-foot outer wall topped by barbed wire and augmented by barriers, steel drop bars and other security upgrades. There are four buildings in the compound. Five diplomatic security officers are present, along with four members of a local militia deployed by Libya's government to provide added security.

Around 8:30 p.m.:

Stevens finishes his final meeting of the day and escorts a Turkish diplomat outside the main entrance of the consulate. The situation is calm. There are no protests.

Around 9:40 p.m.:

Agents hear loud noises, gunfire and explosions near the front gate. A barracks at the entrance housing the local militiamen is burnt down. Agents viewing cameras see large group of armed men flowing into the compound. Alarm is sounded. Telephone calls are made to the embassy in Tripoli, officials in Washington, the Libyan authorities and a U.S. quick reaction force located at a second compound a little over a mile away.

Grabbing weapons:

One agent, armed with a sidearm and an M4 submachine gun, takes Stevens and computer specialist Sean Smith to a safe room inside one of the compound's two main residences. It has a heavy metal grill and several locks, medical supplies and water, and windows that can be opened only from the inside. The other agents equip themselves with long guns, body armor, helmets and ammunition at other buildings. Two try to make it to the building with Stevens. They are met by armed men and are forced to retreat.

Attackers breach the compound:

Attackers penetrate Stevens' building and try to break the grill locks for the safe room, but cannot gain access. They dump jerry cans of diesel fuel in the building, light furniture on fire and set aflame part of the exterior of the building. Two of the remaining four agents are in the compound's other residence. Attackers penetrate that building, but the agents barricade themselves in and the attackers can't reach them. Attackers try to enter the tactical operations center, where the last two agents are located. They smash up the door but cannot enter the building.

Americans trapped:

Meanwhile, Stevens' building rapidly fills up with thick diesel smoke and burning fumes from the furniture. Inside, visibility is less than 3 feet. Unable to breathe, the Americans go to a bathroom and open a window, but still can't get enough air. They decide to leave the building. The agent goes first, flopping out onto a patio enclosed by sandbags. He takes immediate fire, including probably rocket-propelled grenades. Stevens and Smith don't come out of the building. The agent, suffering severely from smoke inhalation, goes in and out of the building several times to look for them. He then climbs a ladder to the roof of the building and collapses. He radios the other agents to alert them to the situation there.

The other four agents are able to reunite and take an armored vehicle to Stevens' building. They reach the collapsed agent and try to set up a perimeter. They take turns going into the building, searching on hands and knees for the missing Americans. Smith is pulled out, dead. Stevens cannot be found.

Reinforcements:

A six-person quick reaction security team arrives from their compound across town. About 60 Libyan militiamen accompany them. They attempt to secure a perimeter around Stevens' building, and take turns going inside. Taking fire, Libyan forces determine they can't hold the perimeter. A decision is made to evacuate the compound and return with everyone to the reaction force's compound.

Evacuation:

Agents pile into an armored vehicle, with Smith's body, and leave through the main gate. They face immediate fire. Crowds and groups of men block two different routes to the security compound. Heavy traffic means they are traveling only about 15 mph, and trying not to attract attention. On a narrow street they reach a group of men who signal for them to enter a compound. They sense an attack and speed away, taking heavy fire from AK-47 machine guns at a distance of only 2 feet, and hand grenades thrown against and under the car. Two tires are blown out.

They speed past another crowd of men and onto a main street and across a grassy median into opposing traffic. The agents drive against traffic, eventually reaching their compound. Security gets into firing positions around the compound and on the roof. They take more gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades intermittently for several hours.

More reinforcements:

In the night, a team of reinforcements from the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli arrives on a chartered aircraft at the Benghazi airport and reaches the security compound.

Around 4 a.m.:

The compound's building is hit by mortar fire. The roof is hit and two security personnel are killed. One agent involved in the attack from the beginning is severely wounded. The men decide to evacuate the city entirely. They spend the next hours securing the annex and moving a large convoy of vehicles to the airport. They evacuate on two flights.

Talk of the Town / man dies after eating cockroach
October 09, 2012, 09:03:25 PM
MIAMI (AP) â€" The winner of a roach-eating contest in South Florida died shortly after downing dozens of the live bugs as well as worms, authorities said Monday.
About 30 contestants ate the insects during Friday night's contest at Ben Siegel Reptile Store in Deerfield Beach about 40 miles north of Miami. The grand prize was a python.
Edward Archbold, 32, of West Palm Beach became ill shortly after the contest ended and collapsed in front of the store, according to a Broward Sheriff's Office statement released Monday. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Authorities were waiting for results of an autopsy to determine a cause of death.
"Unless the roaches were contaminated with some bacteria or other pathogens, I don't think that cockroaches would be unsafe to eat," said Michael Adams, professor of entomology at the University of California at Riverside, who added that he has never heard of someone dying after consuming roaches. "Some people do have allergies to roaches," he said, "but there are no toxins in roaches or related insects."
None of the other contestants became ill, the sheriff's office said.
There was no updated phone number listed for Archbold in West Palm Beach.
"We feel terribly awful," said store owner Ben Siegel, who added that Archbold did not appear to be sick before the contest. "He looked like he just wanted to show off and was very nice," Siegel said, adding that Archbold was "the life of the party."
Siegel said Archbold was selling the exotic prize to a friend who took him to the contest.
The Miami Herald reported the grand prize has been put aside in Archbold's name and will be given to his estate.
A statement from Siegel's attorney said all the participants signed waivers "accepting responsibility for their participation in this unique and unorthodox contest."
The bugs consumed were from an inventory of insects "that are safely and domestically raised in a controlled environment as food for reptiles."

Samsung's Manhattan Project Could Blow Away Apple's iPad
Nigam Arora, Contributor

Apple‘s iPad reigns supreme in the tablet world, but an iPad killer may now be on the horizon. Market share estimates vary but most estimates see Apple steadily holding about 70% of the market share.

The onslaught of Nexus 7 from Google, even at the low $199 price point has not diminished the luster of iPads just like Kindles from Amazon did not damage the iPad franchise.

You probably already know that an epic trial between Samsung and Apple is in progress in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.  I carefully studied filings in the trial and I’m keeping a close eye on the trial proceedings although I am not attending it in person.

The premise behind my investment method is that the most money is made with the lowest risk by successfully predicting change before the crowd.  Both Apple and Samsung are highly secretive companies.  It is difficult to come by credible information early on about their plans.  Fortunately, the litigation between the two companies is a treasure trove of useful information otherwise not available.

A nugget from the trial is Samsung’s tablet roadmap. The roadmap shows a tablet code named P10. P10 apparently is an 11.8 inch tablet that outdoes Apple’s retina display.  The P10 supposedly has a pixel density of 256 ppi and a resolution of 2560 x 1600 (WQXGA).  The tablet also seems to provide LTE connectivity.

The court documents indicate that P10 is a 2012 product.  Considering it is already August, the introduction of P10 cannot be far off.  There is no doubt that Samsung will do a better job than Apple at the electronics hardware.  Both Apple and Samsung use ARM Holdings (ARMH) architecture for processor design.  Samsung manufactures processors for iPad.

Samsung has done extremely well in competing with Apple on mobile phones.  Tablets are a different story from the phones.   Although Samsung has made several notable attempts, its offerings have been no match for iPads.  Part of the blame lied in Google (GOOG) Android system.

Will P10 be an iPad killer?  In my view, it is too early to tell  although some people in the know believe that P10 will be a game changer.  However investors who prefer to be ahead of the crowd may want to stay alert to any and all developments regarding P10.

In North Dakota, Hard to Tell an Oil Millionaire from Regular Joe
By David Bailey | Reuters â€" 20 hours ago

Reuters/Reuters - An aerial view of an oil well site near Watford City, North Dakota is seen in this picture taken May 17, 2012. Many North Dakota oil region residents receive $50,000 or $60,000 a month in oil royalties.

STANLEY, North Dakota (Reuters) - The retired men shooting the breeze at Joyce's Cafe in Stanley don't look like oil barons but appearances can be deceptive, especially in North Dakota.
Take Robert Western, a farmer who was dressed in rumpled overalls and a baseball cap as he sipped coffee and discussed the oil boom that has transformed this once sleepy town.
"Some of the younger people buy a lot more - machinery, vehicles, things like that," said the 75-year-old Western. "The rest of us, I guess it doesn't alter our lifestyle a great deal. I don't have a lot of needs."
After he left, his friend Earl Rogstad remarked to a visitor: "It's too bad Robert didn't have his airplane ready... He offered last summer to fly me over and see (the oil wells) from the air."
Western did not mention that he is co-owner of a Piper single engine propeller plane, according to FAA records. He did admit to receiving oil royalties from wells on his farm but locals said he is far from the richest man in town. It is not clear whether Western is a millionaire or merely wealthy.
"You can't tell the average Joe farmer from the average Joe millionaire," said Ward Heidbreder, Stanley city coordinator.
Average income in Mountrail County, the hub of the North Dakota oil production boom, roughly doubled in five years to $52,027 per person in 2010, ranking it in the richest 100 U.S. counties on that basis including New York City, and Marin, California.
The boom could be creating up to 2,000 millionaires a year in North Dakota, said Bruce Gjovig, founder of the Center for Innovation at the University of North Dakota.
Many oil region residents receive $50,000 or $60,000 a month in oil royalties and some more than $100,000, said David Unkenholz, a senior trust officer at First International Bank & Trust in Watford City, the seat of McKenzie County, which is the No. 2 oil producing county in the state behind Mountrail.
The oil is so plentiful that in Stanley, where the population has about doubled to 3,200 in the last five years, a well drilled under the town means that many homeowners could receive a small oil royalty check.
A lot of North Dakota's new wealthy simply stash the cash in savings and checking accounts with "ridiculously large" balances, banker Unkenholz said.
The monster homes, ostentatious diamond rings or luxury sports cars of California and New York are virtually nonexistent in North Dakota. Looking for wealth here is a subtle exercise.
Locals point to pickup trucks. The boom has boosted truck sales decked out with extras at Stanley's Ford dealer, Prairie Motors Inc, co-owner Gary Evans said.
"They are a lot more elaborate, a lot more loaded up than what they used to be, even the accessories," Evans said. "There is a big demand for accessorizing a pickup truck - everything from running boards to grill guards to chrome wheels."
Evans, 66, a part owner of the dealership since 1970 and manager of the services business, said most residents have not changed their buying habits, especially those over 50.
"Some of these people you could look at and you don't even know if they have an oil well or not, and they may have several," said Evans, who grew up on a family farm west of Stanley and also has some mineral acres.
OIL MATH
One reason rich locals do not brag about their money is because some residents do not own precious mineral rights to the land and have missed out on the boom. Land and mineral rights can be separated and sold in North Dakota and often are.
Royalties are paid based on oil produced and sold mainly in sections of land of one or two square miles in size. The owner of the mineral rights receives the royalties. It can be a complex exercise to divide rights among multiple land heirs.
In simple terms, a well producing 100 barrels of oil per day sold at $80 a barrel would generate $248,000 in a 31-day month. The state collects taxes on extraction and production of about 11.5 percent. From there, if the rights holders have one-fifth royalties, they would receive $43,896 a month.
In July, North Dakota wells produced an average of 92 barrels per day but some produced more than 10,000 barrels in a month, a windfall for the royalty owners.
Some of that money has gone to area churches in the form of anonymous donations and some to the schools for technology, said Heidbreder, the city coordinator.
It's not just land owners who are benefiting from the boom. Oil has also brought high-paying jobs, and some of that money filters through to local businesses.
So-called man camps have sprung up in North Dakota, where oil workers live in makeshift dormitories.
At a man camp in Williston run by workforce housing provider Target Logistics, the 26 kitchen staff, all from outside the state, work 84 hours a week for six straight weeks, then take two weeks off, executive chef Jason Freeman said.
Target Logistics has several man camps in western North Dakota, including a hotel and cabins at Stanley, mainly for energy employees. Its camp in Williston, the largest area town, looks like a military base with room for about 800 workers, a huge cafeteria, weight room, lounge and other facilities.
"This is a thriving economy. This doesn't exist anywhere else," said Freeman, who lives in central Minnesota.
There are downsides to the oil rush. Crime reports are up in Stanley, even if not as much as the population. Aggravated assault reports rose 55 percent last year in the oil producing counties, according to state figures.
Gayleen Grote, who lives on a family farm north of Tioga in the oil patch, said she has a permit to carry a concealed weapon and sometimes puts a semiautomatic pistol in a bra holster.
"There is a lot of testosterone," said Grote, adding that though she has never had to get aggressive, male drivers have stopped several times while she was walking by herself on area roads. "There is nothing to do but drink," she said.

President Barack Obama's own supporters roundly panned his performance in Wednesday night's debate with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, expressing surprise and confusion as to where their political champion disappeared to for 90 minutes in Denver.

"I love Obama. He's awesome. But he could have been a little bit better," said Sam Johnson, 18, an engineering student at the University of Wisconsin who attended a rally here Thursday afternoon with about other 30,000 supporters.

Karen Essex, a fifty-something who came to the rally with her husband Mark, was harsher.

"I watched the first ten minutes and then I had to turn it off, because I didn't really think Obama showed up to debate it," Essex said. "Romney did show up. I actually turned it off."

Essex said Obama won her over in 2008 with his debate performances against John McCain, the Republican candidate four years ago. But she said she was "surprised" and "disappointed" by Obama's performance on Wednesday night.

"I was like, 'I can't watch this,'" she said.

In Denver, Blaise Turner, a 29-year old painter and sculptor, said he saw the same contrast between the two men on the stage.

"As for Romney, I thought last night was the first time that he seemed like he really wanted to be the president, or really wanted the job. I was like, 'Oh that's what the big difference was,'" Turner said. "For the first time he showed that he really wants it, so people are taking him more seriously because of that."

Turner, like all the other Obama supporters who spoke with The Huffington Post, said he was still fully behind the president. But Dan Doeppers, a retired professor at UW who knocked on doors for Obama in 2008, said he thought the debate "may have had some impact on uncommitted people."

"The president seemed under-energized, and in particular, he didn't really go on attack mode, and we were looking, we the faithful, who worked very hard for him four years ago, for that," he said.

Carol Doeppers, his wife, and a former state chair for Common Cause, said she "missed [Obama's] fire in the belly."

"There wasn't that fire, and Mitt had it," she said. "We can only hope that he gets the real aggressive force behind him again. But last night was a down night."

Charlene Harjo, a 55-year-old kindergarten and first grade teacher in Denver, said "Obama didn't put his dukes on."

"Romney didn't do nothing but fidget around. Was he more fired up to attack? Yeah, he was. So in that regards I will give him the fact that he won, but he didn't say nothing about his plan," Harjo said.

Harjo had some advice for Obama.

"In the next debate I want him to put his gloves on. I want him not to be a gentleman no more, and fire back at him," she said. "It's time for you to fight back and say this is what you are and this is what you've done."

The only people who spoke with HuffPost and who did not rule the debate a Romney victory were a 13-year old boy and a 46-year old undecided voter, both of them at the Denver rally.

"I think that Mitt Romney just made a fool of himself. He danced around all the questions and he overstepped his two minute line," said Ryan Stevens, 13, of Denver. "He just says, 'Oh I have a plan.' He has no explanation."

Edward Choury, 46, a wastewater plant operator who came to the Denver rally with his college-age daughter, said he didn't think either candidate won.

"I thought they were pretty even," said Choury, who voted for Obama in 2008.

Choury said he wanted more specifics from both candidates on what they would do about the budget deficit and the tax code.

"Get rid of these deficits, handle these deficits ... whether it's cutting spending, you know, or increasing taxes. I have no problem with paying more taxes if that's what it goes for," Choury said. "And then just how the tax code, how each one of them's going to change the tax code to where I bring home more of my paycheck so I can afford gas, afford food, afford electricity."

Choury also said he is concerned about the rising cost of higher education. His oldest is in college, and he has two more children younger than her. Choury said he was undecided, but sounded like he was leaning toward voting for Obama again.

"I'm not disappointed with him but I just want to know more specifically how these next four years ... what he's going to do in order to keep it going," he said. "I think the last four years, when he was first elected, we were in bad shape as a country. I think he's done an all right job where we are today. But I want to know another four years what can we expect."
