Love Talk / Men Lose Their Minds Speaking To Pretty Women
September 05, 2009, 10:22:06 AM
The research shows men who spend even a few minutes in the company of an attractive woman perform less well in tests designed to measure brain function than those who chat to someone they do not find attractive.

Researchers who carried out the study, published in the Journal of Experimental and Social Psychology, think the reason may be that men use up so much of their brain function or 'cognitive resources' trying to impress beautiful women, they have little left for other tasks.

The findings have implications for the performance of men who flirt with women in the workplace, or even exam results in mixed-sex schools.

Women, however, were not affected by chatting to a handsome man.

This may be simply because men are programmed by evolution to think more about mating opportunities.

Psychologists at Radboud University in The Netherlands carried out the study after one of them was so struck on impressing an attractive woman he had never met before, that he could not remember his address when she asked him where he lived.

Researchers said it was as if he was so keen to make an impression he 'temporarily absorbed most of his cognitive resources.'

To see if other men were affected in the same way, they recruited 40 male heterosexual students.

Each one performed a standard memory test where they had to observe a stream of letters and say, as fast as possible, if each one was the same as the one before last.

The volunteers then spent seven minutes chatting to male or female members of the research team before repeating the test.

The results showed men were slower and less accurate after trying to impress the women. The more they fancied them, the worse their score.

But when the task was repeated with a group of female volunteers, they did not get the same results. Memory scores stayed the same, whether they had chatted to a man or a woman.

In a report on their findings the researchers said: 'We conclude men's cognitive functioning may temporarily decline after an interaction with an attractive woman.'

Psychologist Dr George Fieldman, a member of the British Psychological Society, said the findings reflect the fact that men are programmed to think about ways to pass on their genes.

'When a man meets a pretty woman, he is what we call 'reproductively focused'.

'But a woman also looks for signs of other attributes, such as wealth, youth and kindness. Just the look of the man would be unlikely to have the same effect.'

How To Tips / 13 Things a Burglar Won't Tell You
September 05, 2009, 08:08:55 AM
. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.

2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.

3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste … and taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have.

4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it.

5. If it snows while you’re out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway.

6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don’t let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it’s set. That makes it too easy.

7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroomâ€"and your jewelry. It’s not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.

8. It’s raining, you’re fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your doorâ€"understandable. But understand this: I don’t take a day off because of bad weather.

9. I always knock first. If you answer, I’ll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don’t take me up on it.)

10. Do you really think I won’t look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.

11. Here's a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.

12. You're right: I won’t have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it's not bolted down, I'll take it with me.

13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you’re reluctant to leave your TV on while you’re out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at faketv.com.)

Gi bangungot ko  ganina.. twice!!

Filipinos attribute bangungot to going to bed right after a very full meal. The medical researchers have their own crop of theories. The earliest investigations, based on autopsies of Filipino victims, suggested pancreatitis as the cause of death, with speculation that our high salt diet of bagoong and patis. In the 1980s, doctors at the University of the East proposed the victims had coongenital problems in their heart's anatomical structure. The deaths among Thai workers in Singapore led researchers to zero in once again on dietary factors, with suggestions that the problem was associated with nutritional deficiencies - some suggested thiamine, others potassium

Our fear of bangungot boils down to our dreading our loss of control, of being trapped within the nightmare. Our bangungot beliefs include a remedy, which is for the victim to try to move a finger, a toe or any part of the body, or to have someone else wake you up. The point is to regain control and to slip out of the nightmare.

Bangungot is part of an indigenous psychology, based on a knowledge that loss of control over our bodies and our lives can be hazardous. Bangungot beliefs also reflect social norms - one shouldn't be a glutton, and shouldn't dash off to bed right after a full meal. Politicians should take heed - when Filipinos compare the present dispensation to a never-ending bangungot, as they are beginning to do so now, it suggests malaise and discontent on a grand scale. I would extend this metaphorical use of this deadly ightmare syndrome: when our leaders go to bed on too full a meal, the nation suffers, grievously, from collective bangungot.

DALLAS â€" Thomas McGowan's journey from prison to prosperity is about to culminate in $1.8 million, and he knows just how to spend it: on a house with three bedrooms, stainless steel kitchen appliances and a washer and dryer.

"I'll let my girlfriend pick out the rest," said McGowan, who was exonerated last year based on DNA evidence after spending nearly 23 years in prison for rape and robbery.

He and other exonerees in Texas, which leads the nation in freeing the wrongly convicted, soon will become instant millionaires under a new state law that took effect this week.

Exonerees will get $80,000 for each year they spent behind bars. The compensation also includes lifetime annuity payments that for most of the wrongly convicted are worth between $40,000 and $50,000 a year â€" making it by far the nation's most generous package.

"I'm nervous and excited," said McGowan, 50. "It's something I never had, this amount of money. I didn't have any money â€" period."

His payday for his imprisonment â€" a time he described as "a nightmare," "hell" and "slavery" â€" should come by mid-November after the state's 45-day processing period.

Exonerees also receive an array of social services, including job training, tuition credits and access to medical and dental treatment. Though 27 other states have some form of compensation law for the wrongly convicted, none comes close to offering the social services and money Texas provides.

The annuity payments are especially popular among exonerees, who acknowledge their lack of experience in managing personal finances. A social worker who meets with the exonerees is setting them up with financial advisers and has led discussions alerting them to swindlers.

The annuities are "a way to guarantee these guys ... payments for life as long as they follow the law," said Kevin Glasheen, a Lubbock attorney representing a dozen exonerees.

Two who served about 26 years in prison for rape will receive lump sums of about $2 million apiece. Another, Steven Phillips, who spent about 24 years in prison for sexual assault and burglary, will get about $1.9 million.

The biggest compensation package will likely go to James Woodard, who spent more than 27 years in prison for a 1980 murder that DNA testing later showed he did not commit. He eventually could receive nearly $2.2 million but first needs a writ from the state's Court of Criminal Appeals or a pardon from the governor.

McGowan and the others are among 38 DNA exonerees in Texas, according to the Innocence Project, a New York legal center that specializes in overturning wrongful convictions. Dallas County alone has 21 cases in which a judge overturned guilty verdicts based on DNA evidence, though prosecutors plan to retry one of those.

Charles Chatman, who was wrongly convicted of rape, said the money will allow him some peace of mind after more than 26 years in prison.

"It will bring me some independence," he said. "Other people have had a lot of control over my life."

Chatman and other exonerees already have begun rebuilding their lives. Several plan to start businesses, saying they don't mind working but want to be their own bosses. Others, such as McGowan, don't intend to work and hope to make their money last a lifetime.

Some exonerees have gotten married and another is about to. Phillips is taking college courses. Chatman became a first-time father at 49.

"That's something I never thought I'd be able to do," he said. "No amount of money can replace the time we've lost."

The drumbeat of DNA exonerations caused lawmakers this year to increase the compensation for the wrongly convicted, which had been $50,000 for each year of prison. Glasheen, the attorney, advised his clients to drop their federal civil rights lawsuits and then led the lobbying efforts for the bill.

Besides the lump sum and the monthly annuity payments, the bill includes 120 hours of paid tuition at a public college. It also gives exonerees an additional $25,000 for each year they spent on parole or as registered sex offenders.

No other state has such a provision, according to the Innocence Project.

Exonerees who collected lump sum payments under the old compensation law are ineligible for the new lump sums but will receive the annuities. Whether the money will be subject to taxes remains unsettled, Glasheen said.

The monthly payments are expected to be a lifeline for exonerees such as Wiley Fountain, 53, who received nearly $390,000 in compensation â€" minus federal taxes â€" but squandered it by, as he said, "living large." He ended up homeless, spending his nights in a tattered sleeping bag behind a liquor store.

But after getting help from fellow exonerees and social workers, Fountain now lives in an apartment and soon will have a steady income.

Fountain's story is a cautionary tale for the other exonerees, who meet monthly and lately have been discussing the baggage that comes with the money.

Chatman said he's been approached by "family, friends and strangers, too."

"It takes two or three seconds before they ask me how much money, or when do I get the money," he said. "Everyone has the perfect business venture for you."

Though appropriately wary, the exonerees say they are excited about having money in the bank.

"You're locked up so long and then you get out with nothing," McGowan said. "With this, you might be able to live a normal life, knowing you don't have to worry about being out on the streets

Philippine Daily News / Soldier kills his sergeant
September 05, 2009, 02:26:14 AM

AN ARMY corporal shot dead a staff sergeant inside a military camp yesterday morning after the latter threatened to kill him during an argument.

Staff Sgt. Romeo Mendez, 42, was having his morning coffee when Cpl. Jesusito Bayang, 32, shot him inside the mess hall of the 7th Finance Service Unit at Camp Lapu-Lapu, headquarters of Central Command (Centcom) in Barangay Apas, Cebu City.

For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter

Lt. Col Melchor Tuliao, commander of the unit, heard the gunshots and went to check. He saw Bayang unloading his .45 pistol.

Bayang surrendered to military police, who later turned him over to the Cebu City Police Office Homicide Section.

Bully

Bayang accused Mendez of being a bully. He said the latter had a habit of rudely waking them up by pulling out their beddings, hitting their knees or turning off their electric fans.

He said Mendez, the supply sergeant, took joy in doing this even though it wasn’t part of his assignment.

Bayang was charged with murder when he was brought to the Office of the Cebu City Prosecutor. He signed a waiver of detention and sought time to answer the complaint.

The shooting happened at around 5:20 a.m. yesterday, according to the Crimes Against Persons Unit of the Cebu City Police Office, where the corporal was turned over.

Bayang, according to the joint affidavit of Private First Class Mark Anthony Lumpas, Rex Embolde and Edgar de los Santos, was sleeping inside their quarters at the 7th Finance Service Unit, where they were bunked together.

Suddenly, they said, Mendez came in and woke all of them up, including Bayang who confronted the sergeant just outside the room. A verbal exchange followed.

Bayang, the witnesses said, came back to the room and got his service sidearm, a .45 pistol, and stepped out again.

In their affidavit, they said that they sensed danger and went out of the building to hear Mendez and Bayang arguing again, and then three successive bursts of gun fire and then two more a few seconds later.

Too early

Bayang, in an interview, said they have to wake up early to clean the surroundings, but he said it was too early to be up at 5:30.

This was not what drove him to shoot Mendez, though. Bayang said he confronted Mendez and told him to treat them properly.

Mendez allegedly threatened him by saying he was not afraid to kill, prompting Bayang to return to his room to get a firearm.

Bayang said returned to the mess hall.

He was already talking about killing and he started to rise from his chair, Bayang told reporters in Cebuano.

It was then that he shot Mendez.

When Tuliao arrived at the scene, he saw Mendez’s body slumped against a green monobloc chair, while Bayang unloaded his gun.

“Punong-puno na ako, sir (I’ve had enough)” were the first words Bayang uttered to his superior.

Bayang said he did not like the way Mendez treated fellow soldiers, as the latter allegedly bullied junior soldiers into waking up and cleaning their surroundings while he went back to sleep.

Technical Sgt. Dionilo Gabutero, a colleague of both officers, said he heard complaints from fellow soldiers about Mendez.

However, he said Bayang and Mendez had argued several times.

Bayang said he and another officer had asked for a transfer to be away from Mendez.

SPO4 Alex Dacua said they will file a murder case against Bayang, saying the elements of premeditation were present.

Dacua cited the number of times Mendez was shot, that the victim was unarmed, and that Bayang returned to his room in the middle of the argument to get a firearm and their history.

Bayang stood about two meters from Mendez, with only a long table to separate them. The five empty shells fired from the .45 pistol were found on the table.

Mendez was hit in the neck, arms and abdomen.

No match

Bayang said he knew he was no match for Mendez in a fistfight, as the latter was taller and bigger.

Bayang also has a limp, after getting shot in an encounter in Com-postela Valley in 2002.

Maj. Wilson Feria, Centcom spokesperson, said they will leave it to the PNP to handle the criminal aspectof the case.

However, Bayang will still have to face administrative charges.

Bayang, a native of Siargao, Surigao del Norte, joined the army nine years ago. He worked as a driver.

Feria said they will continue to remind unit commanders to instill moral discipline in their personnel.

While disagreements are common among units, Feria said commanders should see to it that arguments are threshed out.

He said that fellowships are held once in awhile to iron out grievances among staff members.

Both soldiers reportedly did not have derogatory records.

Feria was saddened by the incident, which happened while the country celebrated National Crime Week.
