Travel and Tours / Car alarm: Safety Tool
June 21, 2007, 10:11:15 AM
My Auntie sent this to me knowing that I travel so much and I thought I'll share this useful safety tip.

Subject: A good safety tip.

This could be useful also while overnighting in a motel.

Put your car keys beside your bed at night.  If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car.  The alarm will be set off and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies.

This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator.  Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation.  Test it.  It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain.  It works if you park in your driveway or garage.

If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break in your house, odds are the burglar or rapist won't stick around.... after a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that.  And, remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot.  The alarm can work the same way there..... This is something that should really be shared with everyone.  Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.  P.S. I am sending this to everyone I know because I think it is fantastic.  Would also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can't reach a phone.

(1) Clean up your act.

The best things you can do to yourself is to pay off your accrued debts immediately.  By doing so it gives a strong message to a financial institution that you are taking care of your business, seriously. Now in months time (approx. 2 to 3 months) get your credit reports and review everything there is about your credit details history.  Make sure everything on the credit reports are current especially those recent debts you've paid off.

Why 2 to 3 months?  Not every financial institutions send loan details to these 3 agency on a daily basis. Some do 30 or 60 days, same with these 3 credit report agency. Often agencies will update there systems every month or 3 months. In other words ... not all agencies are created equal.

Note:  Credit report agency will never remove your bad debts information on your credit report unless
1. An error occur by your financial institution whom you have the loan with.
2. It is now 7 years old (approx.) and it will automatically remove itself from your credit history.

For U.S.A. only: List and link of credit report agency

Equifax:       http://www.equifax.com/credit-product-list/
Experian:     http://www.experian.co.uk/
Transunion:  http://www.transunion.com/

You can get all three from Equifax or Transunion for $29.95, otherwise Experian cost $34.95.

Get it for FREE! Federal Trade Commissions  - Heading: How do I  order my free credit report.
Link: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/freereports.shtm

(2) Start new credit history.

Start applying for small loans which allow you to make a small minimum payments on a timely manner. No excuses! PAY IT ON TIME WITH MINIMUM PAYMENT REQUIREMENTS.  By doing this you are now making a fresh start of your payments history and it allows you to establish your credit history slowly, but surely.
Notes: Guarantee your interest rate will be higher than normal ratings but this is part of the healing process.

(3)  You're on your way ...

Continue rebuilding your good credit history soon you will back to getting loans but be careful you don't want to overload yourself once again.

Long flight can be so tiring and boring, now if you plan it right (somewhat) things could get better for you on the plane ...

Things to bring and do while on the plane.

(1) Books/brochures about the country you are to visit.  When I went to France for the first time 2 years ago I bought a travel guide book about France, specifically Paris.  Before buying a guide book browse through several pages from beginning, middle and end to verify that your point-of-interest are listed.

(2) Maps - It is crucial that you buy a map of the city and pin point exactly all the places you wanted to visit ahead of time.  If you're like me, I use point of interest or landmark to determined where I am in case I gets lost.

(3) Since you have nothing else to do, try to learn several phrases like "Hello, in Spanish is "Hola"."

(4) Forget the playing cards game, it's too bulky and heavy (every space and weight counts when traveling). Bring your electronic games or I have an HP IPAQ, a handheld pocket PC contains several games that I like, Notes I kept about my destination, listen to my favorite music, view photo slides, review my calendar, personal addresses, worldmate includes time zone, currency converter, convert measurements, international dialing prefixes, calculator and many more. All in one small 5' x 3' package.

(5) Magazines, lots and lots of gossip magazines that keeps me interested.

(6) Portable DVD player.  I always bring mine when I travel for my daughter's sake and my sanity.

(7) Believe it or not ... I balance my checkbook during my flight.

( Start writing something, anything about your travel plans.

(9) Ipod.

(10) Go to sleep.  Unfortunately, I am one of those who cannot sleep on planes no matter how long or short the flight is.

(11) Walk around to stretch your body.

Do you have something that is not on the list? ... add yours here.

Travel and Tours / Good Karma or Bad Karma?
June 19, 2007, 01:47:17 AM
Back in 2004, my family was in Spain for 8 months on assignment.  Every assignments my husband received my daughter and I often go to the U.S.A. to visit our family and friends for several weeks at a time.  One day my daughter and I planned our semi annual visit to the U.S. and found ourselves in Madrid Airport waiting for our connection flight to the U.S.  I did not know it then what I know now is when, eventually  "17 people provisionally charged over the train bombings" according to bbc.co.uk.

Train bombings happened at the same time, on the same day when I was at the Madrid Airport with my daughter.  My husband freaked when he heard it but couldn't get any details either it happened at Madrid Airport or at a train station.  He knew I was at the airport waiting for my flight at the time of bombing.

Good Karma!

So what's your Karma like? Add your story.

Travel and Tours / Not Your Typical Turbulence
June 19, 2007, 01:13:42 AM
Two Christmas holidays ago, my family was traveling from Arizona, U.S.A via British Airlines to England.  Somehow in the middle of our flight we began to experienced a slight turbulence. Okay, slight turbulence is acceptable for an experienced traveler like me but when my drinking cup was half full of water spilled over my tray ... it scared the s**t out of me.  My knees started to shake, my palm sweats like a pig and this went on for a good 30 minutes to an hour.

That was 50,000 + miles ago and counting.

So, what's your turbulence like?  Add your story.

Hmm. I was curios about this idea so I called British Airlines because I am a member of their Executive Club and I'm flying to the Philippines via British Airlines next month.

According to British Airlines representative they cannot do this because all middle seats will be empty when everyone is to request this option.  Also, it is unfair to other flyer's as well.

Once you open that flood gate ... water will start pouring in.

My husband does this prior to taking off but I find this very stressful.  Because it limits your conversation and there are too many things going on around you, like settling down on your seat, taking care of your handcarry and just getting comfy. It is definitely a no, no, for Mommies on the go.  I don't dare doing this unless it is extremely important phone call.

How about ... making phone calls prior to boarding the plane.

Travel and Tours / Re: Online booking
June 17, 2007, 08:50:16 AM
Alway use your credit card not your debit card when purchasing anything online.

What's the difference?

Credit Card - When you file a dispute regarding your recent online purchase to your credit card company, your credit card company will temporary credit your account while your dispute is being investigated.  This eliminate paying interest rate on that specific charge and the company you are in dispute will not have your money.  If your dispute is valid, credits given to your account will remain in your account.  If your dispute is invalid your account will immediately be charge for the same amount of purchased.

Debit Card - Remember when you are using your debit card for something you bought at your local store or online shopping website, once debit card transaction occur your bank immediately deducted the amount of sale.  Which means your money (amount purchased) is now out of your account and into the merchant's account.  If you are to dispute this charge your bank no longer able to get that money back per your immediate demand.  Of course your bank will investigate per your letter request but in reality you are under the merchant's control because it is up to the merchant to either refund your money or not.

Hints:

_File your dispute in writing for paper trail (proof) purposes, never rely on verbal complaint.

_File your dispute immediate, often credit card companies gives you 30 days from date listed on your statement.

_Keep your receipts, copy of your complain letters and list of names whom you had dealt with for references.

_Remember, the best scenario under these circumstances is to have your money in your pocket not theirs.

Travel and Tours / Re: Custom Check
June 17, 2007, 08:12:31 AM
When will I learn my lesson because time and time again I always get caught with this whole "what not to wear while passing through airport security thing."  I was on my way to Ireland the other day and while waiting in line at Heathrow airport security I heard this sound, a sound that send a signal to the airport screener that I have something on me that is illegal.  Okay guilty as charge, no! not illegal guilty but the belt buckle and my necklace pendant that caused a stir.  Oh yeah, the people behind me were cursing my name in vein.

So I will try to take my own advice and share some with you.

List of few things not to wear or take it out of pocket for the sake of airport security customs check.

_Heavy jewelry
_Belt buckles
_Clothing with metal buttons
_Hidden items such as body piercing
_Metal items such as keys, loose change, mobile phone, pager, PDAs are out of pockets.
_Computer needed to be taken out of the bag and ready to have it turn on without advance notice.
_Coat, handbag and anything handcarry be put inside the plastic bin for electronic check.
_Ready to remove your shoes ... though at my latest experienced I did not have to do it.

Care to share you own list or your personal experience? Sige share sa tanan.

Thanks.

Absolutely, peanut kisses gyod and Jojie's Bakeshop is located, where? Address please.

Okay, bread is just a bread that is made out of flour, water, salt and other ingredients to make a bread. How about a loaf of bread that is called "une baguette" that are sold in Boulangerie (hot bread shop)? Very delicious when it's made and bought in France. Les Croissants is my favorite while having breakfast in Paris.

Nothing can top our homeland Pandesal (Pandisal ba?).  When I was a little girl while living in Anda, my family used to owned a bakery shop sa Central gyod. My Aunt and Uncle would make this fresh from the pogon pandesal that were hot, soft and slightly brown at the top delicious pandesal. Breakfast of champion!

Bread is more than just a bread. ;)

I agree. Noise cancelling headphones is the best gadget to use when you want to reduce that "airplane noise."  For more information:  http://www.thetravelinsider.info/roadwarriorcontent/noisecancellingheadphonesindex.htm

Bon Voyage!

You can take a nap, shower at some places, free snacks or just relax while you are dreading that l-o-n-g flight to the Philippines. I know! 'cause I am a member.

Remember to always carry it with you at all times.  Besides you and your family, cash, Passport and EXPENSIVE jewelry is a HOT commodity than any property there is inside your room.   Be safe and never let your guard down, NEVER.

Important documents such as Passport, your medications, jewelry, electronic stuff, light sweater/jacket/socks (tugnaw gyod!)... you got the idea.  Don't forget a little snack such as chocolate (for me.) in case the airline will serve you food that are prepared and cooked by worldly renounced Chef named Wolfgang Puck's  food on board... NOT!

Mike- you are absolute leader of the pack.

Right on the money! GEC.

Chin = thisgirlvader
It's the occasional sharp edge  free thinking Nuns have been preaching all along.  As Chin=thisgirlvader said: "Rough edges are interesting edges."  Is true.  It's the quite one you have to watch out for. Now, which one is it? Chin or thisgirlvader?

From England.

"Only those who are truly hungry can appreciate the taste of an Alturas sliced bread." by Mike

I am not "truly hungry" = I will not appreciate the taste = bad taste = Therefore, I will not buy Alturas bread.

Thanks, Mike ... I will not be buying Alturas bread when I'm in Tagbilaran this coming July.
