Christ Be Our Light~

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuFdZtU0AP4

Longing for light, we wait in darkness.
Longing for truth, we turn to you.
Make us your own, your holy people,
light for the world to see.

Refrain:
Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.
Shine through the darkness.
Christ, be our light!
Shine in your church gathered today.

Longing for peace, our world is troubled.
Longing for hope, many despair.
Your word alone has powr to save us.
Make us your living voice.

Longing for food, many are hungry.
Longing for water, many still thirst.
Make us your bread, broken for others,
shared until all are fed.

Longing for shelter, many are homeless.
Longing for warmth, many are cold.
Make us your building, sheltering others,
walls made of living stone.

Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong.
Let us be servants to one another,
making your kingdom come.

they were also levied a special tax "for breathing the air of the Philippines" by the Spaniards, dong.

additional case in point: my chinese great grandfather, the late CO JUAN KHO married a spanish peninsulares from basque, the late Maria Isabelle Ayala. (hahaha)

It was a tactical imperative by the Imperial Audencia. The Spanish Gobernadorcillos had dialogue with Portugal, which then controlled The Malaccas prior to loosing it Holland, and even then, there was already significant Chinese presence in said regions.

Spain's intent in the Philippines was an eternal goal. Philippine soil was Spanish soil, and due to the shear vicinity of the Chinese to Madrid's Oriental Bastion, there needed to be laws to minimize Chinese growth and threaten Spain's economic hold.

We have to remember that Manila and the Philippines was the ground and launching pad for which Spain could conduct business ventures in the port states of Guangzhou as well as for the Catholic Operations to spread the faith.

Minimizing Chinese presence in the Philippines was imperative; had their immigration to the Colony been free from checks; the archipelago would have been sinified. To the detriment of Madrid's interests.

There was a substantial amount of Chinese intermarrying into the local culture. Strategic, if you ask me. :)

I've attended discusisons in inter-collegiate debates and discussion on the different cultures of Asia. In college I was part of the Association for Asian and Asian American Awareness of Allegheny College.

We had dialogues in the different cultures of Asian countries. It was interesting ot hear the different perspectives of other Asian-Americans on their view of the Philippines, The Filipino and the Filipino culture.

Many opined that Filipino culture and the Philippines being 'Foreign'. More Western than it is Confucian or Hindu.

Of course it will be different. Half a Millenia of Hispanization and Western Cultural Infusion will have an effect.

#39808
In a historical perspective,

During the Spanish Colonial Epoch, the Spaniards greatly dismissed the Chinese community in present day Manila and distrusted the Chinese merchants as overbearing their Sinnic culture in Spanish Philippines.

Spain implemented a system of assimilation that was better known in the Archipelago as Pax Hispanica. All native Filipino Indios were to take up Hispanic names and baptized into the Church; as means of governance.

As for the Chinese population, Spanish edicts demanded that in order for the Chinese to stay in the Philippines and to continue their business ventures had to acquiesce to Spanish demands:

1) Take up Hispanic names
2) Abandon Confucianism/Buddhism for Christianity

To strategize their situations, many Chinese immigrants married into the local environment. Chinese merchants taking Filipino wives to embed their business. This was a tactical imperative; especially during the Spanish Colonial Epoch.

Case in point: the father of Dr. Jose P. Rizal was a chinese merchant; who married a Spanish Mestiza.

:)

Interesting, eh?

Way Nada:

The emancipation of the Israelites from Babylon bears spiritual as well as theological consequence, and in modern perspective in studying biblical prophesy and the Word of God, timeless.

Be it in in Exodus where the House of Israel was freed from bondage of Egypt, to Jeremiah where Israel was freed, yet again, from the yolk of Babylonian oppression under the auspices of Cyrus.

Note that there is a constancy in cause and effect. The cause being the sins of Israel bearing judgment from the Most High; and the effect: The Most High's fulfillment of His Promise to the people of Abraham. And ultimately, forgiveness.

You brought up a good point, in the year AD 70, Rome put an end to the Jewish resistance and razed the city of Jerusalem, sending the Jewish people in diaspora throughout the 4 corners of the Roman world. Hence the Jewish presence in Europe.

But what I take into consideration is the words from Jeremiah 31 regarding the Israeli people. The fullfillment of God's promise to Abraham.

This was realized yet again in 1947 when all of Israel was yet again established in the land of Canaan. Their ancestral land, a land that was given to them not only by the sword, but by the Order of God.

The defeat of the Arab nations to Israel in the Arab-Israeli Wars and the 7 Day War only solidifies the claim.

Let us yet again remember the Word of The Lord God;

"I will maintain my covenant with you and your descendants after you throughout the ages as an everlasting pact, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.

I will give to you and to your descendants after you the land in which you are now staying, the whole land of Canaan, as a permanent possession; and I will be their God."

Raq, the real issue here is not the Phil-Chinese or Chinoys.

Chinese blood is just a component of the whole Filipino race. Each one of us has certain percentage of Chinese blood and I have high percentage of it being my great grandfather was a merchant from Macau.

We have no issues regarding the Chinese-Filipino Community or Chinoys.

Hence, let us focus our discussion to Chip Tsao and the Chinese red government who wants to own the whole of Spratlys islands.

Excellent address, Mr. Ferniz. Yes, Mr. Ferniz is right. The issue is not the Chinese-Filipino community, as every single one of us has some kind of Chinese blood in our veins.

But the issue at hand is directed towards the words of Mr. Tsao and his supporters in China.

I have no issues regarding the Chinese-Filipino Community or Chinoys.

As I said in other threads, I have high respects to them and they are more than heroes to me. They have no allegiance to the Chinese flag nor have any connection to the Red Government. They are simply Filipinos whos ancestors are freedom loving Chinese who fled from the chains of communism. The survivor factor & the hard-working legacy of thier parents are contributors of thier present success. They are the main players to our present economy.

Hence, lets focus our discussion to Chip Tsao and the Chinese government who wants to own the whole of Spratlys islands.

It is very obvious, Mr. Ferniz, that the enlightenment the Chinese Community have here in the Philippines is far more conducive and open minded as compared to other nations per se in Indonesia, where in 1998, there were mass anti-chinese riots that led to the deaths of many Chinese.

The level of connectivity the Chinese-Filipino community has with the general Filipino community is fairly harmonious.

The words of Mr. Chip Tsao does not represent all of China or the Chinese community. Though he should take responsibility for his uncouth words.

Cheers to our Country and Our People!

Quote from: Lorenzo on August 10, 2008, 10:49:46 PM
After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat
and precede him to the other side,
while he dismissed the crowds.
After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.
When it was evening he was there alone.
Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore,
was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it.
During the fourth watch of the night,
he came toward them walking on the sea.
When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified.
“It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear.
At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Peter said to him in reply,
“Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
He said, “Come.”
Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.
But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened;
and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter,
and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
After they got into the boat, the wind died down.
Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying,
“Truly, you are the Son of God.”

Mt 14:22-33

What are the symbolisms of the wind, and other factors?

There is beauty and completeness in this biblical reference. The waves and the wind represents the authority of the Powers, Principalities, Cherubim and other fallen angels that were cast down along with Lucifer, May The Lord God Rebuke him.

Christ's calming of the waves, the storms, and the wind by a mere word solidifies His Power. The WORD made Flesh. He who had authority to cleanse the possessed from spirits and demons, had the the same authority to command the storms to stop, for fishes to be caught on nets, and ultimately, the raising of Lazarus from the dead.

No prophet has such power. Christ was not a prophet. Christ Jesus, was the Word of God. And IS God.

JESUS CHRIST, Our Lord, explicitly said this.

Remember:

Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died?
Or the prophets, who died? Who do you make yourself out to be?"
Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is worth nothing; but it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, 'He is our God.'
You do not know him, but I know him. And if I should say that I do not know him,
I would be like you a liar. But I do know him and I keep his word.
Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day; he saw it and was glad.
So the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?"
Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM."

-John 8: 54-58

Don't worry so much on petty comments from men like Chip Tsao.

His ignorance and impudence precedes him.

We Filipinos do not have to prove anything to the Chinese. Who cares what they think about us, so long as our families are safe, food on the table, kids in school and getting good grades. What really else matters?

Way Nada,

We have to take into consideration the historiography of the setting and time when this written. Prophet Jeremiah lived in around 600 BC, and during that time, Israel was sacked and invaded by Babylon under the reign of Emperor Nebuchadnezzar. The Babylonians, upon storming through the gates of Jerusalem not only eradicated the defense, but also leveled the Jewish Temple that was constructed by Kings David and Solomon.

It is apparent to us that Prophet Jeremiah was sent to the people of Israel, to lament over the sins of Israel to warrant the judgment of God. Yet, in accordance to the said and aforementioned scriptural reference, they were set free.

The rule of Babylon and its yolk over Judea ended by the coming of King Cyrus the Great of Persia, which was mentioned in scripture:

And I quote from two specific verses in scripture:

Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of The Lord spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, The Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying, Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath The Lord God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all His people? The Lord his God be with him, and let him go up."
(2 Chronicles 36:22-23)

and

"Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of The Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, The Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying, Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The Lord God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all His people? His God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of The Lord God of Israel, He is the God, which is in Jerusalem."
(Ezra 1:1-3)

---

The temple was rebuilt again, Way Nada, after the liberation of Israel from Babylon under the will of Cyrus the Great, who was, as relegated in scripture, the anointed of the Most High.

As for your mentioning of the needing to level the Dome of the Rock and the conversion of peoples to Judaism. That is not necessary.

It is important to note that the arrival of Christ, who is The WORD of God and IS God, completed that prophecy and finalized it.

The Lord Jesus Christ, who is THE WORD, and is God Made Flesh, himself prophesied:

Jesus answered and said to them,  "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up."
The Jews said, "This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?"
But he was speaking about the temple of his body.
Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.

--John 2: 19-22

Christ's death on the Cross destroyed the Jewish Temple, and his rising on the 3rd day solidifies His promise that was ushered by Jeremiah, and again in John 2, which was also the construction of the new Temple. This was made so in the Transfiguration of Christ Jesus, Our Lord on the 3rd day. And on the following days of Pentecost.

Yours In Christ,
Lorenzo

I pray for the Chinese people that think that way of Filipinos. And in the end, we Filipino Kababayans should not linger too much on the biases and prejudices. Some people may translate the hard work and sacrifices of Filipinos as being 'servant-esque', but the truth is that the hard work of Kababayans is what brings over 18 Billion US dollars to the Philippines, to sustain families, send children to school, and to maintain the economic bubble.

The beauty of the Filipino and the Philippines is the country's and the people's ability to weather many storms. We have been invaded, conquored, been at war, yet we are still here. Proud and strong.

Here in the United States, there are over 20,000 Filipino physicians/surgeons. And 1/10th of the American medical work force is Filipino.

What does the Bible say about God's Promise to Israel in regards to the Holy Land?

Solid answer to this question can be found in Jeremiah 31.

I will share it:

The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will seed the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast.
28
As I once watched over them to uproot and pull down, to destroy, to ruin, and to harm, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the LORD.
29
In those days they shall no longer say, "The fathers ate unripe grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge,"
30
but through his own fault only shall anyone die: the teeth of him who eats the unripe grapes shall be set on edge.
31
The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.
32
It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers the day I took them by the hand to lead them forth from the land of Egypt; for they broke my covenant and I had to show myself their master, says the LORD.
33
But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD. I will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34
No longer will they have need to teach their friends and kinsmen how to know the LORD. All, from least to greatest, shall know me, says the LORD, for I will forgive their evildoing and remember their sin no more.
35
Thus says the LORD, He who gives the sun to light the day, moon and stars to light the night; Who stirs up the sea till its waves roar, whose name is LORD of hosts:
36
If ever these natural laws give way in spite of me, says the LORD, Then shall the race of Israel cease as a nation before me forever.
37
Thus says the LORD: If the heavens on high can be measured, or the foundations below the earth be sounded, Then will I cast off the whole race of Israel because of all they have done, says the LORD.
38
The days are coming, says the LORD, when the city shall be rebuilt as the LORD'S, from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate.
39
The measuring line shall be stretched from there straight to the hill Gareb and then turn to Goah.
40
The whole valley of corpses and ashes, all the slopes toward the Kidron Valley, as far as the corner of the Horse Gate at the east, shall be holy to the LORD. Never again shall the city be rooted up or thrown down.

Let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the deadâ€"by him this man is standing before you well. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

hehe, in my high school years, I was enrolled in the Engineering Academy Program. I really loved Autocad class, I also liked IED (introduction to engineering design).

In our IED class, we designed rockets and competed in college competitions. We even went to Drexel Univeristy College of Engineering on their annual Kamikaze Egg-Drop Competition.

Had I proceeded with Engineering, I would have probably stayed with Mechanical Engineering. I love building and designing things.

Some of my friends in high schools are now just finishing up their Masters in Civil Engineering and one already a Chemical Engineer in Lockheed Martin, a US Naval Military Company.

Time goes too fast.

The Roman Empire

When one looks at the map of the classical Roman Empire during the age of Pax Romana "Roman Peace", during the age of Emperor Augustus the Great, one is simply amazed that such a vast empire existed and worked and functioned for almost a thousand years. The depth of the expanse of the Roman Empire is larger than the modern-day European Union. The Empire not only controlled Europe, but also had provinces in Africa and Asia Minor.

1/4th of the world's population lived and died under the rule of the Caesars.

The Classical Roman Empire.

The Byzantine Empire (former Eastern Roman Empire)
The zenith of the Byzantine Empire under Emperor Justinian the Great.
#39867
I want to clear up some misconception in here.

The Roman Empire did not fall completely in one particular date. The Empire's collapse took centuries.

Yes, the Western Roman Empire did collapse in the 5th century. After its collapse, the many provinces of the Western Half of the Roman Empire splintered into princedoms, and kingdoms and Italian states.

However, the Eastern Half of the Roman Empire was spared from total collapse in the 5th century. The Eastern Roman Empire, whose capital was in Byzantium (Constantinople) was prosperous (economically) enjoying the bounty of trade with the Orient to the east, Arabia in the south, and Eastern Europe to its north.

After the fall of the the Western Roman Empire, the Eastern Roman Empire continued to live on. Albeit under another name, and ushered a new age. Emperor Justinian I declared that the old 'Eastern Roman Empire' would be known as The Byzantine Empire.

The Byzantine Empire would last for another 1,000 years; until the 15th century when the Muslim Turks finally extinguished the only remnant of the ROMAN EMPIRE. Constantinople fell in 1453 and under the Turks, it would be renamed as "Istanbul".

Quote from: Raquelproud boholana on March 28, 2009, 03:32:00 AM
I think the answer on this is the Roman Empire spend huge amount of money on the Army trying to control the empire. Plus they keep raising taxes on everybody to pay for all the government expenditure. Huge bloated bureaucracy. Too many unproductive people living off the productive members.
Collapse gyud ang empire kung magsalig na tanan sa welfare sa goberno,ug segi na padala ug gira sa tibook kalibutan.Di lang ni sa roman empire nahitabo but magbalik balik jud ni mao ni giingon history repeat itself.

Yes, very true.

It is also important to note that when the Roman Empire was in its zenith, during the Julius-Nervian Dynasty, most of the peoples in Europe were still primitive, therefore, many of them including the Gauls, Visigoths etc fell quickly under the banner of Roman Legions.

It is undeniable that the Imperial Army was the most organized military fighting force in the world at the time. It was the order, and discipline of the Roman Empire that allowed it to surmount over obstacles. Facilitated the Romanization of most of Europa (the regions that were under Roman control).

However, as centuries passed, Roman culture, technology, language, religion, and domestic culture being exported abroad led to the formation and development of distinct cultures in many barbaric societies that arrived in the Roman Frontier. Per se the Ostrogoths, Dacians, Vandals Visigoths etc. Which would ultimately be one of the many factors that led to the ultimate demise of the Western Roman Empire.

The Roman Military was, indeed, great and numerous. But it was spread out thin to control and provide law and order throughout the continuity of the Empire.

Amahan namo nga anaa sa langit,
pagabalaanon unta ang imong ngalan.
Paanhia ang imong gingharian,
pagabuhaton unta ang imong kabubut-on,
dinhi sa yuta maingon sa langit.
Hatagi kami karon sa pagkaon namo sa matag-adlaw;
ug pasayloa kami sa among mga utang,
maingon nga kami usab nakapasaylo,
man sa mga nakautang kanamo;
ug ayaw kami itugyan sa panulay,
kondili luwasa kami gikan sa dautan
Kay imo ang gingharian, ug ang gahum,
ug ang himaya, hangtud sa kahangturan.
Amen.

There is beauty in the works of men who prostrate their lives to the Will of God.
There is beauty in humility,
fragrance in the meek
and majesty in the simple.

The Eternal, Living, and Eternal God Himself came down from Heaven to Earth to be born of the Virgin Mary and became Man. The Most High chose to be born in a mere manger, amongst animals, in the town of Bethlehem.

The works of the good Lord sing glory to the One who willed it so. Beauty, Perfection and Majesty.

As what Mr. Melendez said, "I am complete in the eyes of the Lord."

Made and formed in HIS Image.

This is one of my favorite verses that I keep close to my heart.  :)

Psalm 27: 1-5

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom do I fear?
The Lord is my life's refuge;
of whom am I afraid?

When evildoers come at me
to devour my flesh,
These my enemies and foes
themselves stumble and fall.

Though an army encamp against me,
my heart does not fear;
Though war be waged against me,
even do I trust.

One thing I ask of the Lord;
this I seek:
To dwell in the Lord's house
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the Lord's beauty,
to visit His temple.

For God will hide me in his shelter
in time of my trouble
Will conceal me in the cover of His tent;
and set me high upon a rock.

This reminds me of the parable Jesus talks about the lost sheep. Jesus tell us that God The Father is like the sheppard who will stop and look for that 1 lost sheep. Even if 99 sheep follow the sheppard, the sheppard will still look and search for that 1 sheep that has gone astray.

When we analyze this parable, there is so much depth and revelation in it that sometimes, we are, by conviction, fall on our knees and give thanks.

Am happy for you Bem. God Is good bitaw. Everyday.

Glacier, its really nothing. T.A is just a teacher's assistant. 4 of us were asked to T.A next semester for medgross anat if students need help w/ structures, we are asked to come in in lab at least once a week.

I accepted because i really love anatomy class. One way i can try to help out with my limited knowledge on anatomy, and at the same time maintain the limited knowledge and even learn some more. I try to help, and at the same time am helped in the process.

One of the main jobs of a T.A is to help prepare the cadavers, and preservation of the samples for anatomical exposition. This means we are to help the instructur(s) in removing the excess materieal on the outer layers and expose the large muscles in the upper limb, lower limb, thorax/abdomen and the skull. In my batch, Glace, we only had 1 T.A volunteer to help out and our instructor had to be in lab 5 days (as we are divided into groups due to the large class of my batch). So some of us talked about volunteering.

I know when we were studying the brachial plexus last year--we were looking for a T.A to help us in identifying/correcting something--but didn't have the opportunity. Instead we only had 1 lab instructor who had to some 30-40 students per group. Now at least next semester, there will be a T.A for ever 8-10 students.

Today, I was touched at seeing the kindness of some individuals. I was walking back to class from break and I saw an old lady that was being helped across a busy street by some young children. I was turning across the corner of the street when I saw this happening. And seeing this I so realized that you know, there really is true goodness in every single person in this world. Well, we are all given a measure to show that kindness and sincerity and deep respect for others, that the Lord Jesus Christ allows us to manifest it in our daily lives, in our works, in our words, in our conversations with people and the like.

Seeing this today made me smile. Salamat tanan sa Ginoo sa Langit kai taga-an ta niya sa ijang grasyas. Kai gi pinangga man ta tanan niya. Atong Amahan sa Langit. :)

This prayer is my favorite. And it was taught to us, by our Lord Jesus Christ, who showed all of us how to pray to God The Father. The Lord Jesus Christ shows us in Matthew 6: 9-13:

This is the Original Latin Prayer entitled 'Pater Noster', which means "Our Father".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hWE52zsOaA

PATER NOSTER, qui es in caelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum. Adveniat regnum tuum. Fiat voluntas tua, sicut in caelo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie, et dimitte nobis debita nostra sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem, sed libera nos a malo.
