Aprofo..Ave Maria..kanta man na ug lubong (simbako) sa amoa but oh gosch..not on wedding.. :o

strangely, this very same song (by either franz schubert and j.s. bach/c. gounod) is used in both occasions.  on second thoughts, it may not be so strange after all because 'ave maria' (hail mary) is all about 'maghimaya ka maria'.  it was a de rigueur song in previous generations' weddings that spilled over to the older baby boomers, at least in the context of bohol.  nowadays, i don't hear it anymore during weddings (are our local singers who know this getting rarer?) but i hear it sometimes as a recorded music during a hearse, usually courtesy of the funeral parlor.  :(

there are current versions by beyonce, andrea bocelli, sarah brightman and barbra streisand.  my favorite is an earlier version, perry como's.

here's more from wiki.answers:

Is Ave Maria a funeral song?

No, it's a religious music.

But it is frequently used as a wedding and funeral anthem; in the wedding it reminds the bride of her purity and beseeches Our Lady to watch over the couple in their life together, and in the funeral the anthem brings to Our Lady's attention that one whom she watched over in life now lies here in death, and beseeches that she follow the soul to its final resting place, trusting that she will bring it to peace.

How to teach compassion

We must embrace and teach the concept that animals and other life forms should be respected, protected, and cherished, not because they may be useful to humans, but for their own sake.

http://bigcatrescue.org/lessons_in_compassion.htm
#39620

The Obvious

A society that condones large scale, institutionalized, recreational killing of animals may be inadvertently encouraging susceptible individuals to commit acts of violence towards humans.  Again, this is not new thinking.  In the 1700's, German philosopher, Immanuel Kant said:  "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men.  We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."  Man deliberately torments, injures and kills other creatures as though they were created to provide him with amusement and sport.  Such thinking is the height of absurdity, and evidence of moral degeneracy.

Hmm, how about a cooking saint?

A beautiful sculpture of St. Lorenzo with
his classic symbols: A Grill and Garlic

Saint Lorenzo, was one of seven deacons under Pope St. Sixtus and was condemned to death by the Prefect of Rome.  The story goes that as he was being grilled, he called out to those torturing him and said, ” Turn me over I’m done on this side!”. Then he prayed that the city of Rome might be converted to Jesus and that the Catholic Faith may spread all over the world.  And right before he died, he said, “It’s cooked enough now.”

Based on this story, it is said that Saint Lorenzo is the patron Saint of cooks.  He is also the patron Saint of cooking school located at the Mercato Centrale in Florence which is also called Mercato San Lorenzo, named for the church.  The beautiful Medici chapel is located on the backside of the San Lorenzo church with Michelanglo’s famous statues Dawn and Dusk/ Night and Day, created for the Medici tombs housed in the Chapel. -- http://www.thefoodieskitchen.com/

in my solitude (because everybody else is asleep, including the cats), it feels so good to listen to yesteryear's music.  just now i'm about to hear perry como's 'ave maria'.  before him, there were the rolling stones with 'as tears go by' and janis ian with 'at seventeen'.

i remember my father with 'ave maria' (he sang this during the weddings of my older cousins, but he vowed not to sing on his children's weddings.  :'( )  as for the two other songs, they simply awaken some primeval feelings in me that i can't put my finger on...

the lyrics:

As Tears Go By
(M. Jagger/K. Richards/A. Oldham)

It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Smiling faces I can see
But not for me
I sit and watch
As tears go by

My riches can't buy everything
I want to hear the children sing
All I hear is the sound
Of rain falling on the ground
I sit and watch
As tears go by

It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Doin things I used to do
They think are new
I sit and watch
As tears go by

At Seventeen
(Janis Ian)

I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
And high school girls with clear-skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired.

The valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
Were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth.

And those of us with ravaged faces
Lacking in the social graces
Desperately remained at home
Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say come dance with me
and murmured vague obscenities
It isn't all it seems
At seventeen.

A brown eyed girl in hand-me-downs
Whose name I never could pronounce
said, Pity please the ones who serve
They only get what they deserve.

The rich-relationed hometown queen
who marries into what she needs
With a guarantee of company
And haven for the elderly.

Remember those who win the game
Lose the love they sought to gain
Indebentures of quality
And dubious integrity.
Their small town eyes will gape at you
in dull surprise when payment due
Exceeds accounts received
At seventeen.

To those of us who know the pain
Of valentines that never came,
And those whose names were never called
When choosing sides for basketball.

It was long ago and far away
The world was younger than today
And dreams were all they gave for free
To ugly duckling girls like me.

We all play the game and when we dare
To cheat ourselves at solitaire
Inventing lovers on the phone
Repenting other lives unknown
That call and say, come dance with me
and murmur vague obscenities
At ugly girls like me
At seventeen.

Men hold aloft a wooden replica of a male sex organ, an echo of old fertility rites or, as some residents explain it, a remembrance of those who were cured of prostate cancer who vowed to perform acts of thanksgiving to the patron saint.

Another reenactment has a woman -- or a man dressed as a woman -- giving birth to two children in a pumpboat.

Sagarino said this is part of the community’s memory of sudden adversity and their gratitude for the survival of their children.

Yet another ritual has a person climbing a coconut tree planted at sea, as a petition for abundant crops all year round.

Rev. Fr. Jun Palacio said the "Baliw-Baliw" festival symbolizes the confusion of the faithful, who chose to illustrate their struggles in life through rituals learned from their pagan ancestors.

"People are showing the things we want to remember and don't want to happen. Some are unexplainable experiences (that they deal with) in terms of their beliefs (in hopes of) establishing ties with their saint. It is also one way of reminiscing God's wrath," Palacio said.

He said the Catholic church plans to “amend” the festival in accordance with Christian teaching without offending the cultural traditions of the island community.

Catholic priests have tried to discourage the festival but Sta. Rosa residents persisted even if the clergy wouldn’t bless the May time activities.

Island residents say the festival is even older than the Fiesta Señor that honors the Santo Niño de Cebu every January.

Sagarino said the island festival was originally called “Sakay-Sakay” because it consisted of taking the patron saint from the wharf and transporting it to the chapel via pumpboat.

In renaming the festival “Baliw-Baliw”, Sagarino said the participants act out the collective and personal tragedies that befell them and offer sacrifices and rituals in a plea for help to their patron saint.

Some of the rituals include staging a cat fight, instead of a traditional cockfight.

Cats placed in a fishnet recall an epidemic that once hit the island which resulted in the presence of dead animals in the sea.

Bizarre rituals in Olango Island

By Ria Mae Y. Booc
Cebu Daily News

A cat fight has a feline pitted against a fighting cock. A man walks about dressed in a cotton duster looking like a a pregnant woman.

Men hold aloft a wooden phallic symbol. Another man carries a tray selling carabao feces disguised as snacks.

In all the merriment by the sea the figurine of the island’s patron saint, San Vicente Ferrer, is loaded on a motor banca for a procession.

This mix of the bizarre and the religious came together in yesterday’s annual “Baliw-Baliw” Festival in Sta. Rosa, Olango island off Mactan.

The festival has been celebrated through several generations, evolving over time from pagan rites and later a fluvial procession.

Benedicto Sagarino, fiesta president, said he remembers watching the event as a young boy with his father.

"Gani bisan wala pa ko natawo naa na jud ni siya. Karon, hapit na gud ko mag-60 anyos. Mapasa pa jud ni sa sunod henerasyon (I wasn't born yet, this celebration was already being held. I’m almost 60 years old now. This will pass on to the next generation)," Sagarino said.

my unsolicited opinion:  this is no longer honoring a saint.  this is bacchanalia, plain and gory, with the saint's feast day made as an excuse to legitimize this kind of celebration.  no wonder matinga pa nato ang visiting foreigners.

maayo gani kay di ingon ani ang pag-celebrate sa feast day ni san vicente ferrer sa canduao, valencia, bohol ug sa ubang dapit sa bohol nga ang patron si san vicente ferrer.
