How come there is no hospital in Mabini? Not even a medical clinica?

We talked about the fall of the Roman Empire, let us also talk about its Rise.

:)

Classical Roman Epoch is one of my favorite epochs in history.
Before Rome, there was barbarity in Europe, uncivilized, anarchy.
After Rome, there was Roman Law, Roman Order, Roman Culture and Civility.

Let us celebrate the life and works of Gaius Octavian Caesar (Augustus), The First Emperor of Rome.

Pater Patriae: Father of the Fatherland.

Remains of Roman citizens, young, old, men, women. Their bodies found within the grounds of the Roman Temple to the goddess Diana.

#39504
This was once a Roman citizen, and a devotee of the godess Diana.

This individual, as we can see, died in prayer. His/her preserved body was found at the remains of the Roman Temple to the Goddess Diana.

What was this individual thinking during the time of eruption? Surely, probably praying and imploring the gods for a miracle.
#39505
I've read interesting yet superfluous journals on this said topic. It amazes me at the level of preservation of Pompei and the remains. During the time of Pompei's obliteration, hundreds of Romans scrambled into the Temple of Diana, a Roman goddess, offering praises and burning incense to the deity for a miracle.

Their prayer was unanswered, as the entire Roman City of Pompei, and some 4,000 Roman soldiers as well as with the urban populace was covered by rock, and ash. To be preserved for 2000 years.

They were silenced some 2 millenia ago, yet their preservation allowed them to outlast the very empire they lived in. Though they died and perished in ash and in agonizing death, they outlived the Golden Rule of the Caesarian Emperors, the Roman god-protector of the Empire.

In death, they were immortalized in clay, in rock, in ash, and marble.

The very flesh and bones withered away, but the form of their body perfectly preserved for all eternity. For mankind to look and touch. History and the Present connect.

The irony of the situation. They died, yet immortalized in death.

The Classical Hippocratic Oath

I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:

I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.

I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.

I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.

I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.

I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.

I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.

I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.

I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.

If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.

Who is Hippocrates?

Answer:

Hippocrates of Cos was said to have lived sometime between 450 BCE to 380 BCE. He was a physician, and the writings of the Corpus Hippocraticum provide a wealth of information on biomedical methodology and offer one of the first reflective codes of professional ethics. Though Plato (a contemporary) makes reference to Hippocrates (Phaedrus  270a and elsewhere), it is generally believed that most of the writings in the Corpus Hippocraticum  are actually the work of a number of different writers. By convention of time, place and general approach a common name of 'Hippocrates' was assigned to the lot (without distinguishing those of the historical Hippocrates). Hippocrates and the other associated writers provide the modern student with a number of different sorts of insights.

On the biomedical methodology side, these writings provide the most detailed biomedical observations to date in the Western world. They also offer causal speculations that can be knitted together to form a theoretical framework for diagnosis and treatment. On the ethical side, their code of professional ethics is so well structured that it continues to stand as a model for other professions.

He is regarded by Physicians, Physician-Surgeons and Medical Students from around the world as the 'Father of Medicine.'

Several years ago,

I was selected to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine, which was held at the prestigious Georgetown University; where a collective of us who chose to pursue medicine/medical research.

There, I was able to make friends, and was able to do rotations with medical professionals in the specialty of Thoracic Surgery, Cardiology, Family Practice as well as Gastroenterology.

There, I met a quaint individual, who attracted my attention, and during our 2 week duration of the Forum, I befriended Dr. Ralph Updike, M.D, who was a then the Chief Gastroenterologist in the GI Floor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

He showed me the ropes, talked to me about the ins and 'outs of the floor, and we divulged in out of topic conversations, family history, reasons for pursuing medicine, his life story etc etc. A beautiful conundrum of informative exchanges, so to say. lol.

He inspired me with his departing words, 'Always remember why you are hear, and what is the real purpose. Don't you ever let daily trivia and constancy numb you to the calling you were given into Medicine. The poor, the destitute, the dying. They are what counts. Always remember that."

Today, even as I read lectures and discuss with colleagues, I can still hear Dr. Updike's voice and message. It resounds in my head.

He is definitely one of the driving forces that has helped me in my decision.

This is all I have to remember him by:

Taken during the end of my rotation with him.

Thanks Dr. Updike, for helping me.

Despite our professional differences, we all were influenced to the road of choice. Be it Teaching, Engineering, Law, Pharmacy, Nursing, Accoutancy, Military, Library Science, Research, Medicine etc.

Who influenced your decision in what to study? Expound.
#39521
I know an individual through a medical forum that I am part of, a Filipina medical student (now a graduate of University of The East), who is right now serving in Lucena, Luzon. Instead of reviewing for the USMLE's to be able to practice in the 'states, she has decided to give back to the land of her birth.

I was amazed at her decision. I am sure, no doubt, she will do well if she ever decides to take the USMLEs. We had many a discussion(s) on medical topics; and she is very resolute, and sound in knowledge.

I give my total respects to her and Filipino physicians who are giving back to Philippines. To bring medical care to areas of plight and need.

Totally admirable.

I can understand your feelings, Ate.

In 1998, when we found out that our Lola Nating (my mommy's mommy) passed away, my mother did not cry. But when we arrived to Bohol, and we arrived to the house of Lola Nating, and when mommy saw the casket of Lola, my mom broke down in tears.

Ako, for myself, I could not even think of it. She was my only surviving Lola. :'(
When I saw my lola nating, I broke down in tears. Deep tears. I saw her face, and the memories of my yesteryears and my childhood flooded my mind.

July 17 is her death anniversary. Lola would be 85 years old today.

Bible Study / The Fairness of God's Love
April 10, 2009, 01:18:31 PM
"And opening his mouth Peter said: 'I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality, but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right is acceptable to Him." (Acts 10:34,35).

Men and women make many unfair judgments about their fellow human beings. Sometimes these prejudices are based upon appearances such as skin color. At other times on a person's ethnic background, language, nationality or economic strata. Or it may merely be that one person reminds us of another person that we do not like, so we decide not to like them either. Jesus, during His ministry, seemed to enjoy taking someone the people didn't like, like a publican or a Samaritan, and making them heroes in His parables.

Our famous text states, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes... ." There is no partiality in the gospel's invitation (Romans 1:16) and there will be none at judgment (Romans 2:4-11).

Bible Study / The Scope Of God's Love
April 10, 2009, 01:13:07 PM
"The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance." (2 Peter 3:9). Out of the whole world, past and present, is there anyone that God wishes to perish? No, not  one! Even as we think of the worst criminals of history; still, not  one of them does God wish to see perish. Not even the ones who crucified His own Son! And certainly not the ones that have perhaps mistreated or slighted you at some time.

"For God so loved the world..." states the most known verse. It is a world of sinners in need that God loves. The term world refers to all of humanity. God's love is perfect and reaches out to all when none of us deserve it at all. It does no good at all to point out the need of the world for God and His love without realizing that we, as part of the world, are equally in need for the same reason.

In recent years a wealth of scientific informations have become available to support the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

*Marijuana is so effective at reducing nausea.
*Nausea, appetite loss, pain, and anxiety are all afflictions of wasting, and all can be mitigated by marijuana.
*Marijuana has also been reported to be beneficial for a variety of neurological problems.
*Patients with spinal cord injuries also report that muscle spasms are reduced by marijuana.
*Marijuana has also been shown to be dramatically effective in glaucoma, a disease of the eyes characterized by increased pressure in the eye. Untreated glaucoma often leads to blindness. Marijuana reduces the pressure in the eye by about 25%, providing dramatic relief for some patients.

While it is clear that marijuana is beneficial for a variety of serious medical problems, in many locales it is still restricted as a dangerous drug. Many spurious arguments have been made to restrict the availability of medicinal marijuana. Some have said that marijuana is highly addictive, and that people can stop taking it once they have started.

Cannabis is given for hospice and or cancer patients as a way to minimize pain.
Yes, I've seen this in the hospital.
Sure, it has its uses, definitely.

Science and Research / What Is Optometry?
April 10, 2009, 12:47:12 PM
Question: What Is Optometry?

Answer: Optometrists, also known as doctors of optometry, or ODs, are the main providers of vision care. They examine people’s eyes to diagnose vision problems, such as nearsightedness and farsightedness, and they test patients’ depth and color perception and ability to focus and coordinate the eyes. Optometrists may prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses, or they may prescribe or provide other treatments, such as vision therapy or low-vision rehabilitation.

Optometrists also test for glaucoma and other eye diseases and diagnose conditions caused by systemic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, referring patients to other health practitioners as needed. They administer drugs to patients to aid in the diagnosis of vision problems and to treat eye diseases. Optometrists often provide preoperative and postoperative care to cataract patients, as well as to patients who have had laser vision correction or other eye surgery.

Most optometrists are in general practice. Some specialize in work with the elderly, children, or partially sighted persons who need specialized visual devices. Others develop and implement ways to protect workers’ eyes from on-the-job strain or injury. Some specialize in contact lenses, sports vision, or vision therapy. A few teach optometry, perform research, or consult.

Most optometrists are private practitioners who also handle the business aspects of running an office, such as developing a patient base, hiring employees, keeping paper and electronic records, and ordering equipment and supplies. Optometrists who operate franchise optical stores also may have some of these duties.

Optometrists should not be confused with ophthalmologists or dispensing opticians. Ophthalmologists are physicians who perform eye surgery, as well as diagnose and treat eye diseases and injuries. Like optometrists, they also examine eyes and prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses. Dispensing opticians fit and adjust eyeglasses and, in some States, may fit contact lenses according to prescriptions written by ophthalmologists or optometrists.

Who is supplying guns and ammunition to insurgents? These insurgents are interesting because they operate like a corporation; they fight military units, but only in isolated cases, never too daunting or wide-scale for fear of massive losses.

And if the opportunity provides, will capture civilians (usually foreign) to be ransomed.

It is also important to note that this novel beautifully explores the effects of power; power that corrupts the soul of innocents, in this case, Citizen Gamelin was forever changed from an artist-pupil during pre-revolutionary France to that of a politician-leader during the height of the 'Reign of Terror'.

When I read this book, I surmised that A. France's probably tried to use Evariste Gamelin as a representative of Robespierre; a psychological analysis, so to say, on the evolution of Robespierre's character and persona as he held on to power. Epitomizes the ever-changing effects of the Revolution.

Eclipse,

I was a History and Biology Major in undergraduate. Presently, am a medical student in the USA.
Are you a history student as well? :)

As for your question, A. France's novel explores the attempt to a create a new world by implementing a coup de tat; the removal of the French Monarchy and the Aristocracy.

They implemented a Voltaire-Locke style solution. France's novelty gave us, the reader, a micro-macroscopic vantage point.

We tend to see the French Revolution in the larger perspective, but France's novelty allows us to see the revolution in the eyes of the 'common man'. This one happens to be that of Citizen Evariste Gamelin.

Best of luck!

I do agree with you that Christ transfigured not only himself, but those who condemned Him on the cross.

The Roman Empire crucified the Lord Jesus Christ on the tree of the Cross.

Ironic and yet befitting that it would be Christianity that would supplant the Old Roman Pagan worship as the state religion.

Christianity boomed in Rome; and from Rome and at Rome, it would spread the Word of God to the 4 corners of the World.

The historiography of Christianity is a Living Miracle.

Hello,

I have finished the book and your summary is spot on. I couldn't understand how the author explained this reign of terror and it's end.

Anatole France's novel gives us, the readers and historians, the ability to analyze the situation in the ground during the height of the revolution, after the convention of 1791 and after the execution of His Imperial French Majesty, King Louis XVI, Her Imperial Majesty Queen Marie Antoinette and the rest of the French Honored Aristocracy.

What started with the aristocracy spiralled down to the commom man being convicted on the grounds of 'subversive thought' against the good of the Revolution.

We can see this in optimum when Maximilien Robespierre, himself, was convicted against the Revolution and sentenced to death by the Guillotine. The term 'Reign of Terror' was a symbolic reference in regards to the Guillotine and the mass executions immediately after the execution of French Monarchy.

The instability of the French Revolution, led to popular dissent, and paved the road for military men such as Napoleon Bonaparte, who would export French Revoluitonary ideals throughout the Absolute Monarchies of Europe; per se Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, The Prussian Empire, the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and the Russian Empire.

Ironically, the Reign of Terror would end when Napoloean, himself, crowned himself the Emperor of the French Empire and the French People.

Thereby betraying the very ideals of Revolutionary Republicanism. The very monarchy the Revolution repudiated, would be replaced for another.

Great book. It illustrates the liability of too much 'People's Power' and the necessity in having a secure and able government. Lest Anarchy subvert the entire nation, in the end that is what the 'Reign of Terror' was. Anarchy in the guise of revolutionary idealism in absence of a governmental body to check it.

April 07, 2009, 12:45:08 PM
My grandfather, who was a Filipino guerilla, told me that when the Japanese invaded Bohol, they swept through Tagbilaran. And when they came to Valencia, there was a significant Filipino guerilla presence and pro-American group. The Japanese collected and captured the guerillas and Americans and had them line up in what is now present day Badjang Springs.

The Japanese summarily executed them all. And pushed their bodies off the cliff. Their bodies were never retrieved.

My Lolo was part of the bolo battalion, as he was in his late teens when the Japanese invaded. There are some stories that my lolo would not say, and he mentioned instances where he saw the Japs throw Filipinos babies in the air and catch them with their bayonets.

Japanese were also voracious rapists. Many Filipinas were used as sex slaves.

The Brutality of the Japanese.
That is how we were rewarded for our Pro-American stance.

God Bless all the veterans, who died for the Philippines.

Discussing Jesus Christ is not necessary in this thread. All I know is that Jesus Christ is the ONLY BEGOTTEN son of GOD.

Jesus Christ is eternally begotten of The Father, and is equally part of the Trinity of the Eternal God Head. The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit.

The Bible left 17 years out of Jesus' Life because it is unecessary in preaching the purpose of Christ's Descent from Heaven to Earth.

Christ came to the World to die for our sins.

Let us discuss this in another thread.

Cheers.

The Roman Empire served its purpose.

The Empire brought nations and kingdoms under one rule, and it provided, due to effective infrastructure and mass communication allowed through its roads and postal systems and its massive navy, allowed the free-flow of thought and discourse.

Not only did it allow the exportation of Roman law, Roman culture, Roman military tactics, but also even Roman-based religions.

Christianity, Through the Grace of God Almighty, conquored the city of Rome in AD 300. Even before that, during the age of Caligula and Nero, there were already practicing Christians in the city of Rome. Many of them were massacred and were martyred.

But think about the miracle of Christianity.

That this faith, which was under attack for centuries, managed to overtake the entire city. The conversion of Emperor Constantine on the Battle of Mirvian Bridge led to the change of Roman History, itself.

When Rome became Christian, it exported and facilitated the growth of the faith. Roman Christianity exported the faith to Germania, to Gaul, to Hispola, to North Africa, to Egypt, to Constantinople, to Macedona, to Dacia, to Brittania, etc etc.

Even though the Roman Empire collapsed, politically speaking, the unifying factor did not. Christianity lived on, and spread vibrantly throughout Europe. And from Europe, it would be exported throughout the entire world.

The Old Roman Colony of Hispanola would one day become the mighty Spanish Empire. And Spain expoted Roman Christianity (Roman Catholicism) to the new world. North and South America, as well as the Philippines.

Catholicism in the Philippines is a DIRECT link to the Roman Empire via the maternal link with Spain.

Philippines --Spain--Imperium Romanum.

The Medical Application and Effect of Cannabis:

First and foremost, for those that do not know it, marijuana is part of the cannibonoid family, and its long term usage has been directly correlated to neurological degeneration, due to the increased Delta THC in the body (Delta THC = Delta-9-Tetrahydrocanbinol)

Increased Delta THC in the blood, as a result of excessive smoking and long term usage has been direclty linked to a decrease in sperm molitility, linking it to azoospermia (which is the weaking of the spermatic cilia and thus inhibit movement and fertilization therefore is substatianlly decreaed to the fact that threshold becomes: Infertile)

For women, who smoke cannabis long term, an increased Delta-THC in blood levels has been directly linked the disruption of the ovulatatory process and decreasing gonadotropin hormone levels, which are required to maintain pregnancy.

A decrease in gNDP (gonadotropin)hormone threshold level can effectively cause spontaneous abortion.

Marijuan is a drug, like any drug, has medical effects.

And as a inhalatory-based drug, has effects on the P-53 gene.

I must share with you tho, last week, my friend Brandon brought some Cuban cigars over my place and we enjoyed those with a nice glass of cognac.

I am very picky when it comes to liquor, usually I have no taste for beer. I prefer French red wine, or if the situation arises where a group of friends and colleagues are over, I will indulge in cognac. But my favorite has to be:

Courvoisier: Cognac De Napoleon

This is my personal kitchen bottle, lol.
I prefer it slighly heated, and enjoyed over a warm fire, while in good conversation with a guest.

Grazie,

Have you ever made some readings that the pre-colonial Philippines is a matriarchal society and patriarchy only came along with western colonization?

I find it sad when women are disempowered by their ownselves, not by men.

First and foremost, she was recollecting her presentation in college regarding the notion of male superiority, and in the scheme of things, in the political echelons that governs society at this moment, it is still the men that rule politics, though it is undoubted that women and women's rights have championed the cause of equality.

Clearly there are instances of limited rights for women, per se in religiously centeres societies such as the Theocratic governments in the Middle East where Shariah laws are still enforced (Saudi Arabia, Iran, Yemen, Oman, etc).

As modernization continues, so too will the rights of womenkind divulge in the world stage, and such notions of male superiority indeed needs to be extinguished because both men and women are equally efficient and able.

Idealistically speaking, aside, we need to take into consideration our own current epoch; and the rights of women are still in uneven ground as to that of men, men still rule the world, in a sense since most politicians in international body politic are still men. Most of the military are still composed of men.

And oudoubtedly, it is so since the beginning of man kind, the history was written by men, revolutions were forged by men, armies were led to battle by men. Though, true, there are instances of matriarchial societies, albeit the fact that it is a limited case.

Most of South East Asia was patriarchal society. The Deva Rajas of the Khmer Empire were males, governers were men, the Kings and Princes of Siamese Kingdoms (Ayuthaya, Sukkothai) were all males and women were largely regarded as possessions in times of war and conquest.

In the Hindu-based Sri Vijayan Empire (to which the Philippines was part of), was mostly a patriarchial society, and so too was the Majapahit Empire, both of which were Malay Kingdom-Empires.

Tokugawa Japan was also patriarchial, so too was Koguryo Empire of Korea, and so too was the 5,000 year old Chinese dynasties of the Zhong, Han, Tang, Yuan, Ming, Qing. The Confucian culture of East Asia is based on the notion of male superiority.
It is based on the character and notion of Filial Piety--to which the concept is heirarchical, and within that hierarchy, the man is above the woman. That concept stresses that as the Emperor bows before the will of heaven, so too does the king bow before the authority of the emperor, and the citizens and civil servants bow before the king, so too does it transfer such relationship in the microcosm of the family life. So too was it expected that the wife bow before the husband, as the children bow before the mother. And in nature even; the grass bow before the authority of the wind.

I know the intelligence of Ms. Grace, and she meant to say that. :)

Cheers,
