mora baya pod tog emirate of ajman's sheik sa united arab emirates nga ang usa sa atong past "bomba stars" (i forgot her name; she was a 1970s long-haired actress who was a 4th placer in a world beauty contest) is one of the wives.  mao nga wa na ta kadungog bahin niya.  hinipos siyag tarong in a palace of her own (all sheik's wives live separately and are given their own palaces).  nakaagi ko atong palasyoha.  ang kural morag way kataposan.  mas lapad pa kaayo kay sa kural sa marcos residence sa tolosa sa leyte.  imagine traveling from dimiao to valencia, unya puro kural imong makit-an nga neverending kay usa ra ka lote.

akong biliban ni manoy kay naa poy babayeng mosugot.  kining dapita maoy di nako masabtan.  hinoon, klaro nga dependent ang mga wives, who obviously don't have careers of their own.  it may be safe to say that they agreed to the marriage for economic reasons.  in exchange, they become baby factories.  what i don't understand is how such a marriage can work.  will this global father divorce a wife who ends up not giving him any child at all?

if we must base claims on territories only on history (which we may know is written by the victors and by a nation's own historical perspective) and not on the current world order (like the UNCLOS I, II, III and the specific EEZ of 200 nautical miles from the baseline of a country, which did not exist in any country's ancient history), then the philippines would not stand a chance in its claim of part of the spratlys.

ancient history is just that, history.  it is a people's past story that informs its identity.  but it need not be the basis for decisions amid current realities.  otherwise, what are most of the current americans doing in north america when that land once belonged to the native american indians?  and we don't even have to talk of sabah here, or gibraltar or the falklands.

rhetoric aside, it looks like the chinese are beginning to roar in confidence with its newly perceived economic might and rising role as a world power.  whew!  what would keep them from claiming the whole philippines, using the UNCLOS  200 nautical miles EEZ, once they do get to legitimize their claim of the whole spratly archipelago?  oh, they swallowed tibet using ancient historical claims too.

we should then be glad that you're back here, tohn.  we all heal, as you may already know.

wasn't it aeneas (in virgil's 'aeneid') who spoke the immortal line of "perhaps someday these things will bring their joy in remembrance"?  the fact that you now can talk about your heartbreak may mean that you're now past the worst of it, and you're probably smiling about it now.

i hope the same holds true with luckybelle, who i hope will soon come back here, like you.  keep on smiling.

Another Marriage for Husband Killer

By Buck Wolf

Here's more proof that love is blind... and dumb: Sharee Miler, who is serving a life sentence for murdering her third husband is getting hitched again.

The best part: Her 56-year-old fiance first laid eyes on her last summer, while he was watching a true crime story about her on the Oxygen Channel's documentary series Snapped.

Miller, now 36, was convicted on conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in 2000, after enticing Jerry Cassady, a man she met on the Internet, to kill her husband.  Cassady later committed suicide and left information that landed Miller in jail.

Obviously, given the woman's track record with men, it was hard for her to trust again.  But nevertheless, she's planning to walk down the aisle again, even if it's in handcuffs.  How's that for a happy ending?

The honeymoon, however, will have to wait.  She isn't up for parole until 2055.

Global father aims for 100 children
Ajman, United Arab Emirates
May 31, 2011

By Gino C. Matibag

Meet Daad Mohammed Al Balushi, a 63-year-old global father from the United Arab Emirates.  Yes, he is global, as he wants to be called.  He is father of 90 children to date.

In June, two of his current three wives will give birth.  He promised in 2002 to go for the century mark before he diesâ€"and he is a few kids away.

Al Balushi said in a report by Khaleej Times, "Next month, by the grace of God, I will be the father of 92 children."

A retired UAE Armed Forces member of 20 years, global dad now has 60 sons, 30 daughters and 50 grandchildren from mothers that came all the way from Morocco to the Philippines.

"I’m a global father having children from one edge of the world to another.  All these were legitimate marriages.  Unfortunately, it is not allowed to have more than four wives at a time.  If allowed, I can manage 20 wives at a time.  Now I have three wives.  I will have my fourth wife after next week when I marry Rukhsana Arif from Pakistan."

The Sharia Law allows four wives at a time.  He would marry someone more fertile after divorcing one wife.

But don't worry, all his wives are well supported financially.  "I divorce them, but look-after them thereafter, like a separate house with full financial support.  Now, I have 17 houses with 17 families, all under my care."

First married at age 19, Al Balushi meets all his families at the same time in his Manamah home every week.

He said each wife receives equal time from him. "Every wife has a separate house to live with her children. Every house has a car and housemaids to look after the family."

As for his health, "I never eat frozen or canned food. I always go for the freshâ€"in fact my wives are also fresh because I never marry a divorcee or widow.  I cannot recall visiting a hospital for treatment."

But the prolific dad figured in a road accident in 1995 when he lost his leg.  He will travel to Jaipur, India in June for an artificial leg, and of course, look for a new bride.

Asked why he wants an Indian wife, global dad said, "India commands the respect of the world today.  There are many women around who want to marry me but I want an Indian girl as Indian women are humane, and well raised with solid values."

His father, Murad Abdul Rahman, lived up to 110 years old and had 27 children from four wives.

If he will have the same longevity, he can easily double his goal.

(2) Are Avocados Really Bad for Dogs?
29 October 2010

After my last newsletter, in which I gave recipes for dogs that included avocado (you may see it in Sergei's video below) I have received many warnings from readers saying that avocados are bad for dogs, some people even said they are dangerous. I thank you all for taking the time to write to me, it inspired me to do some additional research and that is what I found.

There has never been any clinical studies done on if avocados are bad for dogs at least I could not find any trace of such research. The recommendations which states avocados are bad for dogs was created by the main manufacturers of  commercial dog food. I totally understand the motive these companies might have behind this claim. In one recommendation they say that avocados contain a toxin called persin, which could cause irritation of the digestive track in animals if consumed in significant quantities. The other source explained that avocados are dangerous for dogs because they could choke on the seed.

In 1998 my family lived for several months in Napa Valley, California, in a large avocado orchard. We witnessed daily  all the neighborhood dogs feasting on the abundance of avocados around the trees, and every night coyotes would come down from the hills and enjoy avocados as well. Our basset hound, Dasha, was not an exception. One thing we noticed was how beautiful and shinny Dasha's coat became from the avocado in her diet.

I also wonder how an avocado pit could be a concern for dogs, when golf course balls and other dog toys are similar in shape and widely used by all kinds of dogs.

Finally, there is one of the most caring dog food companies Avoderm that adds avocado oil to most of their products and have a picture of an avocado on their packaging. This company manufactures organic high quality pet food and has a great reputation with customers (and their dogs:).

I prefer to base my decision on what to feed dogs, firstly on my own observation and secondly on reliable scientific data. I am rather concerned by the advice given to me from the manufactures of pet food who routinely add to pet products questionable ingredients such as: Ground yellow corn, meat and bone meal, corn gluten meal, chicken by-product meal, animal fat (preserved with BHA/BHT), wheat mill run, wheat flour, Carmel Color, Wheat Gluten, Choline Chloride, dl-Alpha lPolyphosphate  Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate , Biotin, Calcium Pantothenate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Added FD&C and Lake Colors (Yellow 6, Blue 2, Red 40, Yellow 5), and so on. All you need to do is look at the package of most pet foods in any store.

One of the best things I have learned from becoming a raw foodie is to go against the mainstream and not to trust everything the authorities tell me. Because we love our pets so much, it's another reason to question what 'they say'.

Love,

Victoria

most welcome, cuj.

actually there are just too many opinions about this fruit as food for pets, sometimes it does get confusing as to who and what to believe.  but since the list that i posted is of the humane society, i thought it would be safe for a pet owner to err on the side of safety.

here are samples of conflicting claims, both of which are believable:

(1) Avocados Are Dangerous to Dogs
The fruit’s leaves, seeds and bark contain a dog-unfriendly toxin.

While there are many foods that both humans and dogs can enjoy, there are others that â€" while perfectly safe and healthy for people â€" can be dangerous to our animal companions. One example of this is the avocado.

“Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark contain a toxic principle known as persin,” according to Dana Farbman, CVT, of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. “The Guatemalan variety, which is the most common variety found in stores, appears to be the most problematic.”

The primary concern in dogs is gastrointestinal irritation, including vomiting and diarrhea. Typically, these effects are seen in dogs who have scavenged on significant quantities of fruit or branches.

If you suspect that your dog has eaten avocado â€" or any other potentially dangerous substance â€" call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s emergency hotline at (888) 426-4435 for 24-telephone assistance.

For more information on poison prevention, visit the APCC online.

Animal welfare in China

Off the menu

The right to eat cats and dogs is under threat
Feb 25th 2010 | Beijing | from the print edition

AT THE National People’s Congress, the Communist Party decides what laws to draft and when they get passed.  But public pressure is beginning to count, too.  An attempt to persuade the Congress to ban the eating of dog- and cat-meat has captivated the Chinese press and caused an uproar.

A proposed animal-rights law, circulated in draft last September by Chinese activists and legal experts, would be the first of its kind in a country where animal welfare rarely seems a priority.  Pigs destined for slaughter are often seen crammed excruciatingly tightly in cages on the backs of lorries.  In safari parks visitors happily pay to dangle live chickens into lions’ dens, or even to have a live calf dragged by its legs behind a jeep past ravenous tigers.  But a fast-growing middle class, despite enjoying gory outings, is also fond of pet dogs and cats.

This creates conflict with ancient eating habits.  Dogs are a popular dish in many parts of China, not least among ethnic Koreans in the north-east.  Dog restaurants are also common in Beijing. Many believe that eating dog helps keep the human body warm in winter.  Cats are popular in southern China.  The sweet-tasting meat has been served to your correspondent, diced into small cubes reassembled in feline form with fur-stripped paws sticking in the air.  The wretchedness of its foreshortened life was left to the imagination.

Dogs were once banned in many urban areas, but in recent years the government has caved in to soaring demand.  For each household Beijing still has a one-dog policy and decrees that they must not be taller than 35cm (14 inches).  They are nonetheless ubiquitous.

The proposed law would make the “illegal consumption or sale” of dog- or cat-meat punishable by a fine of up to 5,000 yuan ($730) or imprisonment for up to 15 days.  But opponents are still many and vociferous both in the press and online.  Dog-eating, they argue, is a time-honoured tradition and China is not yet ready for Western-style prissiness about consuming such animals.  Perhaps, they suggest hopefully, the word “illegal” could be taken to mean that there might still be a legal way of killing cats and dogs for the table.  The Congress admitted two years ago that better laws were needed to prevent cruelty to animals.  But this one is not yet on the agenda.

more on the profile---

There are sure to be awards and honorifics, all done in private. But the shooter is likely looking for some moments of peace, a way to completely remove himself from the pressure cooker. “These guys can one day be killing on the other side of the world and then mowing the grass 24 hours later,” Smith says.

But given the chance, he’ll almost certainly want to get right back into the action, to feel the rev of adrenaline again. “He keeps going,” Marcinko predicts. “He wants to prove that it wasn’t a fluke.” He’ll be thinking: “Let me prove I really did know what I’m doing.”

When the next helicopter is fueled and ready to whirl away, Greitens says, the Unknown Shooter will “be the first one running for the helo.”

#39363

“This is playing in the Super Bowl and getting the Oscar all in one breath. He wants credit,” Marcinko supposes of the shooter who felled bin Laden. “But only among his peers.” Many SEALs consider themselves “humble warriors,” Greitens says.

But among his colleagues, the shooter’s identity will be well-known. And right now, he’s probably in for some locker-room-style ribbing.

“They’re gonna hard-ass him,” Marcinko says. “It’ll be, ‘If I’d have been there, it’d have been done in 20 minutes instead of 40 minutes.’ ” Smith can envision the shooter’s pals razzing him about the precise location of the shot. But, in the culture of the SEALs, it’s not as if he won’t push back. He’ll come back at them, Marcinko says, with something like: “Talk is cheap. I did it. I left my mark in the sand.”

http://www.washingtonpost.com/
#39364

Chances are he’s keeping score. Smith, who served in the SEALs from 1991 to 1999, got together recently with five Navy SEALs, some of whom he’d served with and others whom he’d trained. “They were responsible for 250 dead terrorists,” Smith says. “They know their number.”

But there are terrorists, and then there are TERRORISTS. Bin Laden falls into the latter category. It’s hard to imagine someone not wanting to take credit for such a significant kill. Yet revealing SEALs’ identities would make them targets for al-Qaeda sympathizers and would also make it difficult or impossible for them to participate in future secret operations.

The identities of other key players in the war against terrorism remain anonymous. No one has identified the troops who slapped cuffs on Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein or named the pilots who dropped the bombs that killed Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, head of al-Qaeda in Iraq. Times have certainly changed. Another era’s military history-makers were frequently publicly identified â€" Paul Tibbets, the pilot of the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima, wasn’t a mystery. But this is a different kind of war â€" a kind of perpetual, amorphous conflict â€" one much less likely to see a formal declaration of peace. Also it’s likely the shooter’s superiors would forbid him and his colleagues to reveal his identity.

to continue with the profile---

On this point, Greitens departs a bit. “You can’t make a lot of physical assumptions,” says the author of “The Heart and the Fist: The Education of a Humanitarian, the Making of a Navy SEAL.” There are SEALs who are 5 feet 4 and SEALs who are 6 feet 5, Greitens says. In his training group, he adds, there were college football studs who couldn’t hack it; those who survived were most often men in good shape, but they also had a willingness to subsume their concerns in favor of the mission.

The shooter’s probably not the crew-cut, neatly shaven ideal we’ve come to expect from American fighting forces. “He’s bearded, rough-looking, like a street urchin,” Marcinko supposes. “You don’t want to stick out.” Marcinko calls it “modified grooming standards.”

His hands will be calloused, Smith says, or just plain “gnarled,” as Marcinko puts it. And “he’s got frag in him somewhere,” Marcinko says, using the battlefield shorthand for “fragments” of bullets or explosive devices. This will not have been the shooter’s first adventure. Marcinko estimates that he might have made a dozen or more deployments, tours when he was likely to have run afoul of grenades, improvised explosive devices or bullets.

He’s likely between the ages of 26 and 33, says Marcinko, founder of the elite “SEALs Team 6” â€" now known as DEVGRU â€" that many believe led the assault on bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. He’ll be old enough to have had time to hurdle the extra training tests required to join the elite counter-terrorism unit, yet young enough to withstand the body-punishing rigors of the job. The shooter’s a man, it’s safe to say, because there are no women in the SEALs. And there’s a good chance he’s white, though the SEALs have stepped up efforts to increase the number of minorities in their ranks, Marcinko and Smith say. A “positive thinker” who “gets in trouble when he’s not challenged,” Marcinko suspects, a man who “flunked vacation and flunked relaxing.”

He was probably a high school or college athlete, Smith says, a physical specimen who combines strength, speed and agility. “They call themselves ‘tactical athletes,’ ” says Smith, who works with many prospective SEALs in his Heroes of Tomorrow training program in Severna Park. “It’s getting very scientific.”

Marcinko puts it in more conventional terms: “He’ll be ripped,” says the author of the best-selling autobiography “ Rogue Warrior .” “He’s got a lot of upper-body strength. Long arms. Thin waist. Flat tummy.”

as they say, no one will ever know.  but here's an attempt by former SEALs.

Who shot bin Laden? Former SEALs fill in the blanks

By Manuel Roig-Franzia
May 3
Washington Post

Who shot Osama?

He’s out there somewhere, an instant icon in the annals of American conflict, the ultimate big-game hunter. But an enigma, too, his identity cloaked for now, and maybe forever.

He is the unknown shooter. The nameless, faceless triggerman who put a bullet in the head of the world’s most notorious terrorist.

Yet there are clues, and the beginnings of a portrait can be pieced together from scraps gleaned from U.S. officials. A trio of former Navy SEALs â€" Eric Greitens, Richard Marcinko and Stew Smith â€" helped us fill in the blanks, drawing from their experiences to develop a kind of composite sketch of an elusive historic figure in real time.

Animal Welfare Law in China and the "Cat Killer"

Second Chance Animal Aid is totally opposed to the torture and abuse of any animal for any purpose.  This includes the recent horrific animal “squishing” by Heilongjiang Province nurse Wang Jue.  Although using the excuse of depression after a failed marriage to allow her to be convinced to film this disgusting, fetish video, SCAA believes there is no excuse whatsoever that can justify such blatant acts of cruelty.

Note: both the nurse and the video producer have lost their jobs (the producer was a cameraman at a provincial TV station), but without any animal welfare legislation in place in China, neither have been arrested; in the United States and most of Europe, there would have been at least a minimum fine imposed and/or arrest, conviction and jail time.

Perhaps, on the only upside of this barbarism, public revulsion against the recent spate of acts of cruelty to animals in China (which have been highlighted and well publicized on the internet recently) seems to be generating a momentum for the enactment of animal welfare laws, which presumably will allow for the punishment of people involved in acts of deliberate cruelty.

According to Shanghaiist Blog it would seem likely that laws may first be enacted at regional level--and according to the Hainan Animal Protection Association, welfare laws will be enacted on Hainan Island by the end of this year.

Any movement towards the enactment of welfare laws for animals in China is good news--and anything at all would be better than the current situation.

Animal Welfare in Taiwan

The Taiwanese Animal Protection Act was passed in 1998, imposing fines up to NT$250,000 for cruelty. Criminal penalties for animal cruelty were enacted in 2007, including a maximum of 1 year imprisonment.

Animal Welfare in Hong Kong

As of 2010, Hong Kong has supplemented or replaced the laws against cruelty with a positive approach using laws that specify how animals should be treated.  The government department primarily responsible for animal welfare in Hong Kong is the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD).

Laws enforced by the AFCD include these:

•   the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance (also enforced by the police)
•   the Public Health (Animals and Birds) Ordinance (including regulations for licences imposed on livestock keepers and animal
traders and a Code of Standards for Licensed Animal Traders)
•   the Dogs and Cats Ordinance
•   the Pounds Ordinance
•   the Rabies Ordinance
•   the Wild Animals Protection Ordinance

In addition, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) does the following:

•   enforces the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance, which includes regulations for slaughterhouses and wet markets
•   publishes a Code of Practice for the Welfare of Food Animals (which describes their transport)
•   publishes Operational Guidelines for the Welfare of Food Animals at Slaughterhouses

The Department of Health does the following:

•   enforces the Animals (Control of Experiments) Ordinance.
•   publishes a Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Experimental Purposes

As of 2006, Hong Kong has a law titled "Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance", with a maximum 3 year imprisonment and fines of HKD$200,000.

Animal Welfare in China

As of 2006 there were no laws in China governing acts of cruelty to animals.  In certain jurisdictions such as Fuzhou, dog control officers may kill any unaccompanied dogs on sight.  However, the People's Republic of China is currently in the process of making changes to its stray-dog population laws in the capital city, Beijing.  Mr. Zheng Gang who is the director of the Internal and Judicial Committee which comes under the Beijing Municipal People's Congress (BMPC), supports the new draft of the Beijing Municipal Regulation on Dogs from the local government.  This new law is due to replace the current Beijing Municipal Regulation on Dog Ownership, introduced in 1889.

The current regulation talks of "strictly" limiting dog ownership and controlling the number of dogs in the city.  The new draft focuses instead on "strict management and combining restrictions with management."  There are no government supported charitable organizations like the RSPCA, which monitors the cases on animal cruelty, so that all kinds of animal abuses, such as to fish, tigers, and bears, are to be reported for law enforcement and animal welfare.

In September 2009, legislation was drafted to address deliberate cruelty to animals in China. If passed, the legislation would offer some protection to pets, captive wildlife and animals used in laboratories, as well as regulating how farm animals are raised, transported and slaughtered.

your conclusion.  i don't think anyone here ever said that marcos was an idiot until this particular post of yours.  ;D

Quote
Ninety nine percent of the laws decreed by Marcos are still in effect until today. Marcos is long gone in Philippine politics but his laws and legacies linger on.

this is a repeated ad nauseam anthem quoting lazaro... funny that if this were so, and it was so, your great author of laws himself deigned not to obey his own laws judging from the crimes of plunder, never mind murder, that he's accused of.  besides, it's not as if he was a pioneer of lawmaking by inventing those laws for the first time.  sure, these linger on, including his legacies, good and bad, and rightly so, these being a part of our history as a nation.  for good or ill.
