apologies well taken, rj10, though i must say i was more disappointed than offended.

it's nice to know that you are with a charity organization.  you do your job, the priest that you encountered does his.

you must be aware of the current controversial reproductive health bill that's pitting our catholic church against congress.  that's democracy at work.  a thorough discussion on this appears in two threads in this forum some months back, if i remember it right.  if you have the time, kindly go over those threads (sorry i missed their titles).

may i just ask you two questions because your job, which you've mentioned, includes support for "responsible parenthood", like the distribution of condoms and possibly contraceptives and lessons on how to avoid unwanted pregnancies---

why is it that rich western countries who use funds to encourage their womenfolk to reproduce some more are now using their funds to support countries such as mine to do the opposite?

are you aware that it's big western pharmaceuticals that are behind the birth control (now euphemistically called "reproductive health") lobby and that they stand to gain the most in terms of sales?

so you've taught those girls in leyte how not to be pregnant.  would that you also taught them how to be disciplined human beings by emphasizing the importance of curtailing human desires during periods of fertility.

yes, rj10, i have read the bible, though i must admit my reading is not as thorough as that of a bible scholar.  what i know though is that to truly understand what the bible conveys, one needs the gift of discernment, which we may not have at all times, if at all.

but such is the mystery of faith.  we believe in a merciful divine being which no human mind can fully grasp.  faith does not require intellectual superiority.  i cannot imagine a merciful god who will deny grace to illiterates who cannot even read a single word.  thus would i say that i can believe in divine benevolence without even knowing the difference between the writings of luke and mark or that the malachi i know happens to be our neighbor's dog.

too bad, rj10.  your exposure is so limited, whether it's with bible readers or with pregnancies.

there are many filipinos you haven't been lucky enough to meet who can leave you black and blue with their knowledge of the bible.  just because you failed to see any sense in the bible doesn't mean that others failed as much.  besides, faith, like salvation, is a very personal journey.  we chose to trek a certain path and because it does us good, then it must be good. we do not question that.

in terms of percentage to the total population, there are more catholics in ireland and france, where there's divorce, than there are catholics in the philippines, where there's no divorce.  please note that while the catholic church frowns on divorce, it does not in any way hamper its practice when it becomes a law of the state.  our country, indeed, has a clear separation of church and state.  we need to be clear with our understanding of such separation though because the church, just like any organization, has the right to express its opinion on things that affect its flock.  an organization of businessmen or security guards can express its opinion on laws that have direct bearing on its interests, so why not our church where the majority of us belong anyway?

yes, we don't have divorce in my country.  would that it stays that way.  it does not make us any less as a people, if you bothered to know.  (by the way, what we have is annulment.  as a last resort, it gets into the very heart of the union of husband and wife; it's harder to get because it means no marriage existed to begin with while divorce means a marriage ceases to exist.  that's a whale of a difference and is not to be trifled with.)

as for pregnancies, unplanned and careless as they come, these are the exceptions and not the rule, like everywhere else, surely including the country where you come from.  carelessness is a universal human frailty and is not a monopoly of filipinos.

meanwhile, there must be something in our country for you to decide to live here.  your limited exposure doubtless limits your perspective, but while you're here, wouldn't it be more civilized of you to see our strengths rather than our weaknesses?  i mean, why generalize?

correct me if i'm wrong, but judging from the way you write, your first language isn't english.  i hazard to guess that you must be from continental europe then, which means you belong to a race whose history is peppered with a thousand years of mutual slaughter and, probably not satisfied with your own borders and peoples, went on to other lands, including the place where you are now, to subjugate my own ancestors who were keeping their peace in their own idyllic world.

funny that it took murder and mayhem for your kind of civilization to get at where it is now.  lucky me for being filipino.  i don't have to live down such historical baggage.

Reader comments on the abandoned monkey and pigeon story were along these lines:

    •  Humans could learn a little something from this unlikely twosome: Tolerance, unconditional love, and respect for someone or something that’s very different than us.

    •  If only humans could be so kind and loving towards one another and take the examples of these beautiful animals, we would be in a much more pleasant state of living than we are now!

    •  I wish the human race would put aside its differences and live happily alongside one another like animals do.  We're supposed to be the superior race. What rubbish!

    •  Two species worlds apart and they find common ground and companionship. Pity us so called civilised humans can't do the same.

The abandoned monkey who has found love with a pigeon
13th September 2007

They're an odd couple in every sense but a monkey and a pigeon have become inseparable at an animal sanctuary in China.

The 12-week-old macaque - who was abandoned by his mother - was close to death when it was rescued on Neilingding Island, in Goangdong Province.

After being taken to an animal hospital his health began to improve but he seemed spiritless - until he developed a friendship with a white pigeon.

The blossoming relationship helped to revive the macaque who has developed a new lease of life, say staff at the sanctuary.

Now the unlikely duo are never far from each other's side, but they aren't the only ones to strike up an unusual friendship.

Earlier this year a pig adopted a tiger cub and raised him along with her piglets because his mother couldn't feed him.

And in 2005 a baby deer named Mi-Lu befriended lurcher [dog] Geoffrey at the Knowsley Animal Park in Merseyside after she was rejected by her mother.

True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power.  Mankind's true moral test (which lies deeply buried from view) consists of its attitude toward those who are at its mercy: the animals.  And in this respect, mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it. â€" Milan Kundera

Now that we’re paying attention -- now that humans are ruling the planet and we know that animals are in trouble -- animals are showing us once again, as they did in the distant past, how to behave towards others. Paul Shepard argued persuasively in his many books that the early development of humans was tutored by animals.  From them we learned how to hunt and how to live together.  We observed and imitated them.  They are our elders, evolutionarily speaking.   Shepard felt strongly that the human mind, and particularly the brain, is actually that part of us most dependent on the survival of animals.  In his view, living animals are a necessary part of the mental growth and maturity of humans. It is unlikely that animals are doing things now that they haven’t always done.  Perhaps animals in captivity are crossing species lines, out of desperation, that they haven’t crossed before.  But studies of social animals in the wild show that mammals and birds demonstrate compassion, empathy, and a whole range of emotions that used to be considered the sole provenance of humans.  In any case, the significant paradigm shift is occurring in humans, not in the animals.  We are just discovering that our emotional capacities came to us through the evolution of mammals.  We are realizing that humans are not separate, and we are not the only beings with souls. #39016

Almost as in a fairy tale, communication and caring is taking place between humans and animals, in both directions, that is waking humans up to our kinship with other animals and to our own animal souls.  We are re-discovering that animals have feelings and emotional needs and responses very much like ours.   (Some of us wonder how anybody could have thought otherwise.)  And, because we are now observing them with more curiosity and attentiveness, more empathy, they are mirroring our own feelings and emotional needs. first-tier biological weapons:

A 33-year-old Wentzville, Mo., woman, very upset by the death of her new Chihuahua puppy in June 2006, pushed her way into her breeder's home before 6 a.m. to get a new puppy. When the breeder managed to get the woman out of her house, the irate intruder began beating the breeder over the head with the dead animal. When neighbors called police, the woman finally left, yelling threats and waving the tiny carcass out of the sunroof of her car.

David Havenner, 41-year-old Port Orange, Fla., man was charged with battery in July 2004, after he allegedly hit his girlfriend with a three-foot-long live alligator and then threw empty beer bottles at her when she tried to run away. Havenner, who kept the gator in his tub, told police that his girlfriend, Nancy Monico, started the dispute when she bit him that morning. Havenner was ultimately convicted and sentenced to six months in jail; the alligator was released into the St. Johns River.

A father and son operating a convenience store in DeLand, Fla., in June 2008 found themselves facing a robber armed with a palm tree frond and a flip flop. The robber demanded money from the clerks, threatening them with his leafy weapon, until a customer chased him away with a stool. Useless as his weapons may have been, police still charged Gelando Olivieri, the alleged robber, with armed robbery.

When Kimberlee Ann Cole, 18, found her 24-year-old boyfriend Joel Goldsmith smoking crack in the bathroom on July 11, 2008, she allegedly beat him with a toilet seat. The Fort Pierce, Fla., couple's housemate called the police, who discovered blood all over the bathroom in which the fight took place. Cole was charged with domestic battery, and Goldsmith, whose lacerations can be seen in the mugshot above, faced a cocaine possession rap.

Animals with Jobs/Library Cats: Feline Book Experts-1

The most famous kitty to dwell in the den of the books is probably Dewey Readmore Books, of Spencer, IA.  Dewey's fame reached worldwide status, and condolences came from all over the world when he died in 2006.  His obituary appeared in hundreds of newspapers.

The book, Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World  by Vicki Myron, made the New York Times bestseller list and is being made into a movie with Meryl Streep.

Vicki has a new feline friend now, named Page Turner.  Originally, Page Turner was reported as female, but turned out to be male.  Page is not a library kitty, but Vicki's own cat.  Like Dewey, Page was a stray, and is a tabby and also resembles Dewey quite a bit.   Unlike the Spencer library's cat, however, Dewey Decimal is a female.  Her human could no longer take care of her, so now she spends her days surrounded by books, typing and using the phone.

Prevalence
(or statistics of circumcision)

One-sixth (1/6) to one-third (1/3) - estimates of the proportion of males that are circumcised worldwide

The WHO has estimated that 664,500,000 males aged 15 and over are circumcised (30% global prevalence), with almost 70% of these being Muslim.

Circumcision is most prevalent in the Muslim world, parts of Southeast Asia, Africa, the United States, the Philippines, Israel, and South Korea.

It is relatively rare in Europe, Latin America, parts of Southern Africa, and most of Asia and Oceania.

The overall prevalence of circumcision in the UK is 6% according to the WHO's estimates.

Prevalence is near-universal in the Middle East and Central Asia.

The WHO states that "there is generally little non-religious circumcision in Asia, with the exceptions of the Republic of Korea and the Philippines".

The WHO presents a map of estimated prevalence in which the level is generally low (< 20%) across Europe, and Klavs et al. report findings that "support the notion that the prevalence is low in Europe".

In Latin America, prevalence is universally low.

Estimates for individual countries:

Spain, Colombia and Denmark less than 2%
         Finland 0.006%
         Brazil 7%,
         Taiwan 9%
         Thailand 13%
         Australia 58.7%.

The WHO estimates prevalence in the United States and Canada at 75% and 30%, respectively.

Prevalence in Africa varies from less than 20% in some southern African countries to near universal in North and West Africa.

The Roman Catholic Church formally condemned the ritual observance of circumcision and ordered against its practice in the Ecumenical Council of Basel-Florence in 1442.  The Church presently maintains a neutral stance on circumcision as a medical practice.

Circumcision is customary among the Coptic, Ethiopian, and Eritrean Orthodox Churches, and also some other African churches.  Some Christian churches in South Africa oppose circumcision, viewing it as a pagan ritual, while others, including the Nomiya church in Kenya, require circumcision for membership.  Some Christian churches celebrate the Circumcision of Christ.  The vast majority of Christians do not practice circumcision as a religious requirement.

In Islam, circumcision is mentioned in some hadith (it is referred as Khitan), but not in the Qur'an.  Some Fiqh scholars state that circumcision is recommended (Sunnah); others that it is obligatory.  Some have quoted the hadith to argue that the requirement of circumcision is based on the covenant with Abraham.  While endorsing circumcision for males, Islamic scholars note that it is not a requirement for converting to Islam.

Circumcision in cultures and religions

In some cultures, males must be circumcised shortly after birth, during childhood, or around puberty as part of a rite of passage. Circumcision is commonly practised in the Jewish and Islamic faiths.

Jewish law states that circumcision is a 'mitzva aseh ("positive commandment" to perform an act) and is obligatory for Jewish-born males and for non-circumcised Jewish male converts.  It is only postponed or abrogated in the case of threat to the life or health of the child.  It is usually performed by a mohel on the eighth day after birth in a ceremony called a Brit milah (or Bris milah, colloquially simply bris), which means "Covenant of circumcision" in Hebrew. It is considered of such importance that in some Orthodox communities the body of an uncircumcised Jewish male will sometimes be circumcised before burial.  Although 19th century Reform leaders described it as "barbaric", the practice of circumcision "remained a central rite" and the Union for Reform Judaism has, since 1984, trained and certified over 300 practicing mohels under its "Berit Mila Program". Humanistic Judaism argues that "circumcision is not required for Jewish identity."

Circumcised vs Uncircumcised

Even though over 12,200 circumcisions happen in the UK every year for medical reasons, the operation is something of a mystery to many members of the population and there are a variety of myths surrounding it.

The procedure itself involves removing the foreskin with a scalpel to leave the glans permanently exposed, before the lower edges of remaining skin are then stitched back together and questions are invariably asked about cleanliness and protection from nasty diseases.

Does circumcision mean you’re cleaner? The foreskin protects the glans of the penis and is full of glands which contain oils called smegma that keep the head of the penis moist and lubricated. This smegma is anti-bacterial so it keeps germs at bay so the absence of a foreskin would tend to suggest that hygiene might become a problem. However, as long as you are washing your penis every day, circumcision makes no difference to cleanliness.

Can circumcision reduce your risk of STIs and cancer? The theory is that circumcision slightly reduces your risk of getting penile cancer which is often caused by the wart virus. There is some evidence to show that less circumcised men carry the wart virus than uncircumcised men so there is a reduction in risk but not an absence of it.

Penile cancer is very rare but circumcision as a child does reduce the risk further and circumcised men often have less STIs, but this is no substitute for wearing a condom.

Does circumcision affect sex? After circumcision, the skin covering the glans changes from very delicate and thin to much tougher keratinised skin â€" like the difference between hands that regularly do housework and those that live a pampered life. This means that the glans of the foreskin becomes less sensitive and, therefore, it can affect the sexual experience for those who have the operation when they are older.

Circumcision confers a lifetime of medical, health and sexual benefits. At least 1 in 3 uncircumcised males will, over their lifetime, develop a condition requiring medical attention. This means various degrees of suffering and some deaths. In contrast, circumcision can prevent or greatly reduce the risk of most of these medical conditions. The surgical risk of a circumcision in a modern setting is extremely low, while the long-term functional and cosmetic outcomes are generally excellent. Circumcision of the male partner also confers substantial sexual and medical benefits to a woman, by reducing her risk of disease, suffering, medical treatment and premature death.

It is hoped that this review will have proved important informative to medical practitioners and health workers, thereby enhancing the quality of information that they can impart to parents of male children and to adult men. It should also prove to have educational value to others, especially the parents of boys, but also adult men, whether circumcised or not. It is hoped that as a result of reading the information presented herein the choice that has to be made concerning circumcision, especially of infants, will be a much more informed one.

Although there are benefits to be had at any age, they are greater the younger the male. Issues of “informed consent” may be analogous to those parents have to consider for other medical procedures, such as whether or not to immunize their child. The question to be answered is “do the benefits outweigh the risks?” When considering each factor in isolation there could be some difficulty in deciding. However, when viewed as a whole the answer to whether to circumcise a male baby must surely be “YES”. Nevertheless, everybody needs to weigh up all of the pros and cons for themselves and make their own best decision. Hopefully the information provided herein will help in the decision-making process.

Circumcision versus Lack of Circumcision

Lack of circumcision:

• Is responsible for a 12-fold higher risk of urinary tract infections in infancy. Risk = 1 in 20 to 1 in 50 for uncircumcised infants and 1 in 200 to 1 in 500 for circumcised infants. Higher risk of UTI at older ages as well. Overall lifetime cumulative prevalence of UTI = 1 in 3 for uncircumcised males compared with 1 in 20 for circumcised males, respectively.

• Confers a higher risk of death in the first year of life (from complications of urinary tract infections: namely kidney failure, meningitis and infection of bone marrow).

• One in ~400â€"900 uncircumcised men will get cancer of the penis, which occurs more than 20 times more commonly in uncircumcised men. A quarter of these will die from it and the rest will require complete or partial penile amputation as a result. (In contrast, invasive penile cancer never occurs or is extraordinarily rare in men circumcised at birth.) (Data from studies in the USA, Denmark and Australia, which are not to be confused with the often quoted, but misleading, annual incidence figure of 1 in 100,000).

• Higher risk of prostate cancer (50â€"100% higher in uncircumcised men)

• Is associated with 3-fold higher risk of inflammation and infection of the skin of the penis. This includes balanitis (inflammation of the glans), posthitis (inflammation of the foreskin), balanoposthitis (inflammation of glans and foreskin), phimosis (inability to retract the foreskin) and paraphimosis (constriction of the penis by a tight foreskin that will not return after retraction). Up to 18% of uncircumcised boys will develop one of these by 8 years of age, whereas all are unknown or much rarer in the circumcised. Risk of balanoposthitis = 1 in 6. Obstruction to urine flow = 1 in 10â€"50. Risk of these is even higher in diabetic men.

• Means increased risk of problems that may necessitate 1 in 10 older children and men requiring circumcision later in life, when the cost is 10 times higher, the procedure is less convenient, and the cosmetic result can be lesser, as stitches or tissue glue are required, as compared with circumcisions done in infancy.

• Increases by 2â€"4 fold the risk of thrush and sexually transmitted infections such as human papillomavirus (HPV), genital herpes (HSV-2), syphilis, chancroid, Trichomonas vaginalis and thrush.

• Is the biggest risk factor for heterosexually-acquired AIDS virus infection in men. 2 to 8-times higher risk by itself, and even higher when lesions from STIs are added in. Risk per exposure = 1 in 300.

• In the female partners of uncircumcised men lack of male circumcision is associated with an up to 5 fold higher incidence of cervical cancer (caused by sexually transmitted HPV), genital herpes, Trichomonas vaginalis, bacterial vaginosis (formerly called “Gardnerella”), and possibly Chlamydia (which is a cause of pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility from blockage of fallopian tubes, and ectopic pregnancy).
Getting circumcised will result in:

• Having to go through a very minor surgical procedure that carries with it small risks.

• Improved hygiene.

• Much lower risk of urinary tract infections.

• Much lower chance of acquiring HIV, the AIDS virus, heterosexually.

• Virtually complete elimination of the risk of invasive penile cancer.

• Slightly lower risk of prostate cancer.

• More favourable hygiene for the man’s sexual partner.

• Much lower risk of cervical cancer and Chlamydia (and thus infertility and other problems) in the female sexual partner.

• More favorable sexual function and experience, with no reduction in sensation during arousal or in the sensitivity of the flaccid penis.

• A penis that is regarded by most men and women as being more attractive.

Circumcisions: Jewish, Muslim groups oppose ban

Phillip Matier,Andrew Ross, Chronicle Columnist
Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Nothing like a proposed ban on circumcision to bring Jews and Muslims together.

Local chapters of the Jewish Community Relations Council and Anti-Defamation League are teaming up with a couple of practicing Jewish and Muslim families to file a lawsuit demanding that San Francisco's elections director remove the highly publicized circumcision ban from the November ballot.

The lawsuit, which is expected to be filed today in San Francisco Superior Court, argues that circumcision is a common medical procedure regulated by state law - and that it has no business being decided by city voters.

Library Cats: Feline Book Experts

Library cats are a popular sight in public libraries across the US and around the world.  The majority of patrons seem to be in favor of the feline bookworms.  Not everyone is always happy about their presence, however, often citing allergies as a problem.
Still the number of cats doing book duty has risen over the last 25 years.

Despite some protesters, many libraries have taken on cats, sometimes more than one.  Those with cat allergies are left to deal with them on their own.

Now. back to the thread. Please.

this thread does not involve only your condemnation of a guy you've never met who's now dead.  while he claimed to be some sort of a god, in your humility meanwhile you give the impression that you're a good christian.  how christian can one be if one mocks another faith, such as your rude comments about the hindu faith?  (please bother to review your posts on this; i believe these are the ones hubag had reacted to, which you now label as hypocrisy.  maybe it's time to learn nuanced language, symbolisms, and elegant english?)

i hope you haven't lost sight of the fact that forum readers are not illiterate.  you ridicule the hindu faith and now you want us to believe that this thread is only all about your rants against sai baba who does not even represent that faith?

Nearly all humans experience pinworms, a parasite that causes itching around the anus, at some point in their lives.  To determine if you have an infestation, have a partner gently touch around your anus with tape while you sleep, when the worms are most active. They will stick to the tape and should be visible.

from another non-expert observer:

1.  the jewish lobby and its contribution to election campaigns in the u.s. are not to be trifled with.  thus, the u.s.'s support for israel is understandable in the realm of geopolitics.  even bibi netanyahu had lately dared to preempt barack obama on his policies, right in the u.s. president's home turf!

2.  the cold war, as exemplified by the u.s.-u.s.s.r. ideological rivalry, is a thing of the past.  neither country need to court other countries now just to shut each other's influence out.  (an aside:  the late former president marcos, like the other dictators then), was famous for playing the u.s.s.r. and the u.s. against each other, "threatening" the u.s. with u.s.s.r. concessions when he wanted to get his way with the u.s.)

3.  we have an existing mutual defense treaty with the u.s.  consider this diplomatese of u.s. ambassador to the philippines harry thomas jr:

“We are strategic partners. We will continue to consult each other closely on the South China Sea, Spratly islands and other issues,” the envoy said. (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/16368/us-ambassador-thomas-reaffirms-philippine-us-ties)

4.  growing up in a culture that gave us the illusion (no thanks to the u.s.) that we can't stand by ourselves without big brother u.s. had also given us this self-pitying attitude.  maybe we should outgrow this soon?  a neighborhood bully clenches his fists and we at once look around for a bigger bully to punch him for us?

Slain by the Holy Spirit

This is one of the experiences in the Charismatic movement that defy the traditional beliefs of many Catholics. When someone prays over another person, sometimes he or she receives a touch of the Holy Spirit and falls to the ground. The person is filled with great peace; it is an encounter with God in a very serene atmosphere. Somehow the person is disconnected with reality and enters into a state of joy in the Lord.

Of course we must not believe everything we see, specially when some people fake the experience or when some of the people who pray push the others to the ground. We are not talking about this here.

To be slain in the Spirit is a true experience when the right people are involved and when the Holy Spirit makes His manifestation; the ways of the Lord are above our ways and the wind of the Spirit blows where it pleases [John 3:8]. It is very easy to condemn what we don't know says St. Peter.[2 Peter 2:12]

David and the high priests fell on their faces when they saw an angel standing between earth and Heaven [1 Chronicles 21:16]

Ezequiel came before the Presence of God and He fell upon his face [Ezekiel 1:26-28]

Daniel also had a similar experience, He lost his strength [Daniel 8:17-18]

When St. John the Apostle had his encounter with Our Lord, he fell at His feet, feeling as dead. [Apocalypse 1:17]

a  filipino priest came here sa among seminary diri sa Germany. ang balita sikat daw siya nga Healer. daghan jud nangari diri nga mga Pinoy kay magpaheal. ipatong nija ijang kamot sa ulo unya matumba ka ug kalit, mawad-an kadiyot ug panimuot. maka amaze pero sometimes youll come to a point nga mo doubt pod ka kung tinuod ba jud nga naay healing.

i've seen this "event" many times, loaynon, in charismatic prayer sessions.  i believe they call it "slaying".  i understood such as manifestations of one of the gifts of the holy spirit.  (a fact that i presume you know much more about because of your theological studies.)

though i'm not part of the movement itself (i've attended enough sessions to conclude that it's not for me), i believe it's real.  the trajectory of the fall defies the laws of physics, to my mind.  it's too sudden and too unbelievable for a conscious human being not to show any instinctive reaction to break his fall.

i suppose the healing part is another matter.  some people can heal, some can't.

oo, motuo kog faith healing.  bisan unsaon pa ta ug tambal ug medical doctor, kun di ta mo-cooperate by believing we will be healed, then we cannot be healed.  that's faith.

but to go back to the definition of faith healing as posted by hubag (reply #1), yes to that, too.  there are just too many accounts of such miracle (and thus inexplicable in scientific terms) healings for anyone to disregard.  naturally, it is up to us to distinguish honest-to-goodness faith healers from the charlatans.  come to think of it, aren't there charlatan medical practitioners too?
