Even though Jack’s mother encouraged him to look at kittens, Ziggy seemed to be the perfect match for him, and they’ve been friends ever since. Now Jack is 20, and they’re still the bestest of friends that a man and his cat can be!

A Shelter Cat Jumped On Boy’s Lap Asking For Love Watch What Happened 11 Years Later

Animals seem to have a way of picking out the best people for their lives. It’s like they can tell who is going to provide them with the love and attention that they need. This story couldn’t be more perfect when it comes to that, and won’t leave a dry eye in the room after you’ve finished reading it.

Eleven years ago, a cat in a shelter reached out to a little boy that he’d picked out for herself as her new owner. That little boy happened to be Jack, who was only nine years old at the time. All Jack did was enter the crowded cat room, and the orange tabby jumped onto his lap without a moment’s hesitation.

Satire Sites

The following sites have a disclaimer revealing them to be satirical blogs or blogs meant for fake articles:

1. Dai1lymail or Mail In One

Disclaimer: “By reading from this website, you agree to it that the Internet was invented by a young Filipino in 2016 few days after Rodrigo Duterte ascended to the throne. This means that, there was not Internet before 2016. Leave this website immediately if you do not agree to this. lol ”

2. The T1mes

Before it changed its “About Us” page, The T1mes declared that it is the “world’s satire news website. That means the stories on this site are made up. Yep, even the one about Jesus coming today… actually that one was real.”

3. Guard1an

Disclaimer: “By reading from this website, you accept that the world was created by the US President Barack Obama. Kindly leave the website immediately if you do not accept this fact.”

4. ON DA MIC

Disclaimer: “ON DA MIC is a news and political satire web publication, comprised of individual posts, some taken from or inspired by real news events but the stories are almost entirely works of complete fiction. This site is a source of parody, satire and humor and is for entertainment purposes only.”

5. Da1lymail

Terms of Use: “This website is satirical in scope and intent. It provides fake news and social criticism in a satirical setting.”

6. So, What’s News?

SWN?’s About page states: “So, What’s News? is a satirical & fictional news website. Our aim is to inject humor into everyday news to provide respite to readers who have grown weary with mainstream news organization’s partisan, biased and depressing way of presenting news.”

Its most popular satirical story could easily be about Senator Jinggoy Estrada being arrested in the US after trying to smuggle by implanting it inside his breasts. Estrada even issued a statement denying the story.

7. Adobo Chronicles

In its About Us page, Adobo Chronicles says that it is “your source of up-to-date, unbelievable news.” But now, the site has adopted a format to help its readers distinguish fact from fiction. Statements in italics are facts; the rest are fiction.

Be Informed. Beat the Trolls, Share the Truth!

11. Pinoy Article

Pinoy Article has posted several fake articles, many of which even made it to their most popular posts. We have busted the articles on Clinton calling Duterte the “world’s man,” Sebastian linking PNoy to drugs, and Canadian PM Justin Trudeau sending Filipinos a lovely message.

12. Social News PH

Social News PH’s disclaimer says that it does not give assurances as to the accuracy, completeness and currency of its content.

Among its fake articles that we busted, such as Pacquiao donating $5 million to Duterte’s drug war, Hillary Clinton calling Duterte as the “world’s man,” 3,500 metric tons of gold deposited during Aquino admin in Thailand, and Sebastian pointing to PNoy as the mastermind behind the drug labs in the country.

It is connected to Facebook pages “SNP â€" Social News Philippines” and “President Duterte Random Photos.”
#3908

9. Balitang Pinas

Balitang Pinas’s disclaimer says the site “cannot guarantee the legitimacy of some of the information” contributed by its readers. It even advised readers to “do additional research” if they find some information doubtful. At least the site’s disclaimer’s honest even if many of its articles are fake.

As of posting, its most popular posts include several fake articles that we already busted, such as the police raiding Agot Isidro’s house, the late Miriam Santiago telling Duterte not to trust VP Robredo, and Putin calling Ramos blind.

The site is linked to Facebook page “Duterte Balita.”

10. Pilipinas Online Updates

Pilipinas Online Updates’s disclaimer says it all, wherein it does not assure its readers as to the accuracy, currency or completeness of its content.

As of posting, its trending news include fake articles, such as Angelina Jolie wishing for a Duterte in the US and Obama calling de Lima abnormal.

The site also gets some of its articles from Balitang Pinas.
#3909

7. Newstrendph

Newstrend is related to the “Duterte Media” FB page. The site is fond of publishing articles from suspicious sites and satirical blogs.

It has lots of fake articles that we’ve busted, with the more recent being Putin calling Ramos blind, Sebastian linking PNoy to drugs, Senator Risa Hontiveros filing bill for color coding MRT/LRT commuters, and more.

Newstrend is linked to the Facebook page “Duterte News Global.”

8. Tartey (Pinoy Viral News)

Tartey has published plenty of articles obtained from Newstrendph, which also publishes fake articles. Some of the articles we’ve busted that are posted on this site are Pacquiao donating $5 million for Duterte’s drug war, Obama calling de Lima abnormal, the late Miriam Santiago telling Duterte not to trust Robredo, and more.

Just like with the other blogs, Tartey is quick to publish fake articles if they are against Duterte’s known oppositions or praising Duterte.

Tartey’s disclaimer says it “makes no representations, warranties, or assurances as to the accuracy or completeness of the content” of its site.

5. Du30newsinfo

Du30newsinfo contains articles from fake articles and satirical news and passes these off as real news. While it spreads some real news about Duterte, it is quite proficient in publishing fake news against Duterte’s critics. If you find articles from this page, triple check them first before believing them.

Some of its fake articles and articles obtained from satire sites that we busted include US President Barack Obama calling de Lima abnormal, Duterte appointing the late Miriam Santiago as new Supreme Court Chief Justice, Senator Tito Sotto filing charges against de Lima, Putin calling Ramos blind, and more.

Du30newsinfo is linked to Facebook page “Duterte Para sa Pagbabago.”

6. Okd2

One of Okd2’s viral fake articles was its claim about Disney investing $350 million for Disneyland Philippines. Buzzpinas busted it and even posted Okd2’s “About” page, which first cited that it is an entertainment website meant to test the netizens’ gullibility.

However, its “About” page has changed, but it still did not give much of an assurance as to the site’s credibility. It said that 80% of its content is contributed by people who want to share their opinions. There is even a disclaimer that in “very rare cases,” Okd2 may post some fiction for their audience’s entertainment. If you’re not diligent enough in verifying Okd2’s articles, you won’t be 100% sure which articles are real and which are fiction.

Some of Okd2’s fake articles that we busted are about Teddy Casiño being barred from entering the Lung Center of the Philippines and the late Miriam Santiago telling Duterte not to trust Robredo.

3. Updater24

Updater24 has posted several fake sites, with the top Google search result for the site being its death hoax about Christian inspiration speaker Joyce Meyer this October 2016. We also spotted several fake articles, such as Floyd Mayweather agreeing to a P500-million rematch with Manny Pacquiao, Billy Bush being hospitalized instead of suspended after tape of his lewd comments with Donald Trump was revealed, and so many fake stories about the Duterte critic Agot Isidro. We already busted that fake story about police raiding her house and finding P680 million and her dating two drug lords.

Meme Buster also busted its story about Jackie Chan wanting to make a Duterte movie.

4. BBC101

BBC101 (with Betty B. Cole) is different from the established UK news site BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). This one publishes fake stories without a disclaimer that it is a satire site. Google it and you’ll find the first search engine result to be the fake article about the UK Parliament endorsing Duterte’s drug war, which was also published on the satire site theguard1an.com.

Other BBC101 fake stories that we busted include Queen Elizabeth II congratulating the Philippine Senate for ousting de Lima from her committee chairmanship, also posted by satire blog thet1mes.com, and Vladimir Putin calling FVR blind to what Duterte is doing.

Sites with Fake articles

1. Pinoy Speak (Duterte News)

Pinoy Speak (Duterte News) posts satirical articles and passes them off as real news, such as Senator Manny Pacquiao giving $5 million for Duterte’s drug war and the showing of Agot Isidro and alleged drug lord lover’s video in the Senate.

It also shares fake articles, such as Jackie Chan begging to make a movie out of Duterte’s first 100 days; Jaybee Sebastian linking PNoy to drugs; Sebastian engaging in an affair with Senator Leila de Lima in exchange for drug protection; Senator Antonio Trillanes IV receiving a P500-M check to destroy Duterte,  among others. This meant it does not bother checking its sources.

2. DW-TV3

Some of DW-TV3’s articles may look like satire articles, but the site’s “About Us” page did not say anything about it being a satire site.

Meme Buster has busted several articles posted by this site, including the Canadian PM Justin Trudeau praising Duterte’s drug war, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon calling Duterte “brave”, Hillary Clinton showing Duterte some love or calling him “the world’s man”, and Agot Isidro dating drug lords.

Watch out for these fake and satire sites, think before you click, and read before you react

October 13, 2016

How sure are you that the article you’re seeing on your Facebook News feed now is genuine or not? You can always use Google or any other search engines to verify the articles, but many people often neglect this step, making them vulnerable to websites deliberately sharing fake articles or sites that meant to create fun by making satire articles out of trending topics.

Meme Buster was, in fact, created to counter the lies online. After busting hundreds of memes and lies, we’ve come up with a list of websites that are fond of posting fake articles and websites with disclaimers that they are sharing satirical articles. We’ll keep updating this list as we encounter more sites with made-up stories.

You can also configure your Facebook or other social media account to filter out or block obvious trolls.

If that sounds like a lot of work, you can simply unplug, but that won’t really change anything. In fact, says William, business for professional trolls is likely to boom.

Booming business

One way, he says, is by engaging the suspected troll.

“Most trolls can’t argueâ€"that’s one of their weaknesses,” he says. “Most of the time they can only copy-paste ready-made statements to synchronized topics; they don’t really have the minds to argue with you.”

Trolls also tend to follow influencers like drones follow the queen bee, he adds. Kill the queen bee and the drones die off, too.

Dummy accounts

Social media is a numbers game, and each keyboard warrior used several dummy accounts to make their posts.  Some attention is paid to creating believable online personas and back stories for these accounts, says William, from the generic “concerned netizen” to “struggling OFW,” for instance.

“The real accounts are submerged by the trolls,” he says.  “If I’m a troll and you are a legitimate commenter, and I convince you to fight for my cause, you become one of my keyboard warriors, as well.  Even if you are a real person with a real account, if we convince you, you become part of the organism. You become a servant of the ideology that these fake trolls have injected you with.”

William’s experience does nothing to allay any fears the more conspiracy-minded among us might have.

Technology / Re: Confessions of a troll

William worked in one of several clusters scattered throughout the country, headquartered in a suite of rented rooms.

It was set up like a call center operation, he says. Each day, the team leader would put up a board on which was listed the most recent posts with the most “likes” and “shares” which had to be responded to. The appropriate responseâ€"carefully worded by the team’s designated writer
â€"would likewise be put up on the board. And the “keyboard warriors” would start posting responses to the targeted posts, usually by merely copying and pasting the prepared response.

“We really worked at it, 24/7,” recalls William. “But the pay was very good. You could earn P2,000 to P3,000 a day just doing copy-paste.”

Organized effort

William got into trolling in earnest when his firm was enlisted by the camp of one of the candidates in the last presidential campaign. At first it was just like brand marketing, creating a buzz around the candidate, building up his “brand” and his image.

“It’s an organized effort,” he says. “The publicist makes a communication campaign plan.  The plan sets the agenda, the objectives, the messagingâ€"what do we want to say?  How do we convince others to agree with us?”

As the campaign heated up and the candidates started duking it out in earnest, troll tactics became increasingly important.

Technology / Re: Confessions of a troll

“In the American context, trolling is getting people riled up and pursuing an argument by posting comments,” he says. “But in the Philippine context, trolling only happens when there’s something like a presidential campaign. That’s the only time trolls become visible as an organized group.

“Philippine trolls are like the Dutertardsâ€"aggressive, angry, looking for an argument. And that’s the very nature of a trollâ€"

you want to argue, you want to convince people even if you have to lie and fabricate things.”

In short, trolls are there to push an agenda, to propagandize.

Online buzz

Basically, William was doing social media marketing, developing an online “buzz” around certain brands for local and international clients.

“It’s just like advertising,” he says. “We’re pushing certain brands, and not in a subtle way, through our Twitter posts. And if you have enough posts on Twitter with the same hashtag, it will trend.”

There is a dark side to all this online manipulation, however, and that is trolling.
#3923
Technology / Re: Confessions of a troll

“I became famous on Twitter,” he says, so famous that his feed soon had enough followers for him to be considered an “influencer.”

“You need to have a lot of followers before you can become an ‘influencer,’ like at least 50,000,” he explains. “Influencers are people who set trends on social media. Normally, it’s about artists, celebrities and their fans. But you can make anything trend as long as you control the influencers.”

Because of his online credentials, William was hired by a well-known public relations agency for its social media marketing operations.

Eventually, he says, he became the team leader of a network of influencers.

“We collected as many famous people on Twitter as we could, and we started trending.”

Blissfully unaware

As a functional illiterate when it comes to social media, I was blissfully unaware of most of this.

But as the boundaries between the digital world and “real life” become fuzzier, I feel a nagging sense of dread that, sooner or later, this online negativity would begin to impinge on my world, whether I’m logged in or not.

In order to catch me up on what’s what in this new frontier, I decided to go straight to the source: William the professional troll.

William’s career started quite innocuously a few years ago when he first went on Twitter.

As analysts have been telling us for years, social media is the new battleground for the hearts and minds of the people, and as in any war, the first casualty is the truth.

In the Babel that is the internet, it is becoming increasingly difficult to sift fact from fabrication in most online exchanges.  In the wild and woolly world of the social media, any assertion, no matter how far-fetched or outlandish, seems to gain traction as soon as enough people “like” or “share” it: This is what is known as “feeding the troll.”

Someone even came up with an acronym for the content that is increasingly finding its way into the social media: DRUMSâ€"
disinformation, rumors, untruths, myths and smears. Repeated and retweeted often enough, DRUMS can pass for the truth to all but the most critical and analytical minds.

Toxic

It’s not only in the Philippines where the social media has turned increasingly toxic.

A recent Time magazine cover story titled “How trolls are ruining the Internet” paints a depressing picture of how social media has been overrun by hatemongers of all stripes, from cyberbullies to misogynists, body-shamers targeting fat or unattractive people to racist neo-Nazis and anarchists who are just doing it “for the lulz.”

Could trolling be the new modality for social control?
#3927
Technology / Re: Confessions of a troll

Critical factor

A troll is, of course, someone who goes online to pick a fight, for whatever reason: to push a political agenda, to dump on someone he or she dislikes, to vent on a topic he or she feels strongly about, or very often just for the “lulz” (laughs).

In recent years, however, trolling has come to dominate public discourse on social media.

Go online and there’s no avoiding the spectacle of “Dutertards” spitting venom at their real or imagined mortal enemies, the “yellowturds” and vice versa, each drowning out any kind of rational discussion of the issues with the sheer volume (in both quantity and noise level) of their spew.

It’s now generally accepted that social media was a critical factor in deciding the outcome of the last election. What is less clear is why, even after Rodrigo Duterte’s decisive victory at the polls, the online war between his die-hard supporters and more vocal critics hasn’t abated.

If fact, it seems to have heated up even more as pro-Duterte keyboard warriors transition seamlessly from campaigning for him to attacking any and all who dare criticize the newly-elected president or his policies.   In particular, Sen. Leila de Lima, the Liberal Party and “traditional media” have been singled out as favorite targets of this troll army.

Confessions of a troll

By: Eric S. Caruncho

William (not his real name) belongs to a relatively new species of media practitionerâ€"the professional troll.

That is to say, he is a salaried employee of a legitimate public relations outfit whose job is to run social media campaigns for various clients.

Of course, his job designation doesn’t say “troll”: he could call himself a “social media marketing consultant,” among other things.

But a large part of his job involves engaging in internet trolling.  And while trolling isn’t the only weapon in his arsenal, it’s proven a very useful one.

Echo chamber

This leads to the so-called “echo chamber” effect: the online community becomes an enclosed system where the core ideas of the reigning belief system are constantly reinforced, and opposing viewpoints are excluded or ridiculed.

The community exists in what is called a “filter bubble,” exposed only to ideas and opinions that they already agree with. Having “drunk the Kool-aid,” they are effectively inoculated from any outside ideas and dissenting opinions, like members of a cult.

Critical thinking is paralyzed.

Technology / Re: The Philippine troll army
November 27, 2016, 04:08:33 PM

Another component of the troll ecosystem are fake news websites and websites with unverified information, with which social media sites and blogs often share broad objectives as well as content.

For instance, the aforementioned Mocha Uson Blog Facebook page often gets newsfeeds from pro-Duterte news sites such as scoopitph.com, trendingnewsportal.net.ph and du30newsinfo.com.

Part of the organism

“You inject the message into the real accounts, and they in turn will spread it to other people, and so on,” says a self-confessed troll who worked for one such organized group.

“The real accounts are submerged by the trolls. If you are a real person with a real account and we convince you, you become part of the organism.”

Social media is also a numbers game where one’s power is measured in terms of followers, shares, likes and engagement.  In this virtual world, one can “clone” oneself with relative ease by creating any number of fake accounts, or set up “bots” to do the trolling automatically, thereby amplifying one’s “voice.”

Graphic artists and videographers create memes and videos for posting.

Community Influencers create social media groups that can be used to spread the messages generated by Central Command.

Monitoring teams keep an eye on the opposition’s websites and pages, sometimes infiltrating them  to gather ammunition against them.  This is then fed back to Central Command so they can craft their responses.

Troll accounts then spread the messages.

According to one study, organized online trolling is the most effective way to troll pages or groups to push an agenda. Often run through “boiler room”-type operations, these web brigades possess a structure:

Central Command is in charge of formulating core messages and online strategies.

Writers compose boilerplate responses to the issues selected by the Central Command, and in some cases actual articles for posting on social media and other sites.

Trolling infrastructure

Learning the infrastructure of misinformation is a good place to start developing your own “crap detector.”

It is said that the troll armies are like call center operations, and that there are at least three such huge operations in Metro Manila and in the north.

Trolls are the basic building blocks of that infrastructure. Originally someone who inserts himself into an online conversation to provoke a reaction or disrupt the discussion, today’s trolls are as likely to be pursuing specific communications objectives in support of one group against its perceived rival groups.

Sinister ‘conspiracy’

Numbers are important in the world of social media.

Diehard Duterte supporters boast that the Mocha Uson Blog beats both the news site Rappler and this paper, hands down, in terms of followers, likes, shares and engagement.  They cite this as proof that people no longer trust the mainstream media, which they see as “biased” against President Duterte.

The most extreme among them seem convinced that mainstream media are pawns of a sinister “yellow” conspiracy to bring him down.

Global trends indicate that more and more young people get their news from social media sites. Studies have also shown that many online news sites publish stories with little or no effort to verify them.

Given this state of affairs, Filipinos would do well to follow Hemingway’s prescription when going online.
#3937
Technology / Re: The Philippine troll army

The conspiracy theory gained steam when the Senate hearing was linked to an online petition to close down the popular Mocha Uson Blog, a pro-Duterte Facebook page which has been accused of spreading misinformation through, among other things, links to fake news sites.

But even as the petition gathered momentum, the petitioner himself was swamped by trolls, and shut down by Uson’s supporters.

Ironically, even as this was going on, free speech advocates spoke up in defense of Uson’s right to express her views, and the right of her four million followers to believe her.

Responsible use

In a recent hearing to address the problem of “cyber-bullying and misinformation on social media,” the Senate called on the Department of Education to take measures to educate the youth on the responsible use of social media, and to stop trolls from spreading “malicious misinformation,” fake news and hate speech.

Predictably, these moves soon sparked a deluge of online venom from netizens (and of course, trolls), not least because the proponents happened to be Senators Leila de Lima, a vocal critic of Duterte, and Sen. Bam Aquino, cousin of the former president.

The gist of the spew is that the hearing was part of a sinister “yellow” conspiracy to muzzle free speech, especially since pro-Duterte sites apparently have the numbers on social media.
#3939
Technology / Re: The Philippine troll army
November 27, 2016, 04:02:19 PM

The relative anonymity of cyberspace has a way of encouraging netizens to give free rein to their worst tendencies, especially where emotionally-charged political and social issues are concerned. Online discussions, say about the war on drugs and the alleged extrajudicial killings that have accompanied it, tend to escalate into virtual screaming matches where threats, curses, name-calling and other hate speech are par for the course.

Now the web has turned into an anarchic free-for-all where the mob rules, where “the best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity,” as William Butler Yeats foresaw in his apocalyptic poem “The Second Coming.”

No wonder some evangelical Christians consider the internet the new Tower of Babel, where God, after the deluge, “confused the language of the whole world.”

Troll army

That was before special-interest groups and their army of trolls took over.

Having tested and proven the effectiveness of social media in running political campaigns, partisan groups now routinely use web brigades to push propaganda to sway public opinion and advance their own agendas.

By inserting themselves into normal discourse on social media sites, this troll army attempts to give news events and current issues the spin that is to their own advantage.

The loudest noise seems to be coming from netizens both for and against the controversial policies of President Duterte.

Ernest Hemingway once said that to be a great writer, you needed “a built-in, shock-proof crap detector.”

These days, you need one just to navigate the internet.

The online world was supposed to be a zone of free expression, a democratic space where the truth would eventually prevail, because netizens were essentially rational, thinking beings capable of discerning fact from fiction, fabrication, false assumptions, wishful thinking, obfuscation, misdirection, propaganda, spin, half-truths, untruths and all manner of skullduggery.

You took an oath to defend the Constitution but from your actuations since taking office you seem to be testing your new found powers, from your pronouncements about imposing martial law, suspending the writ of habeas corpus, to having to "innovate the law", whatever that means.
#3944

In the end there really is no one to blame but you Mr. Duterte. Your incorrigibility is your worst trait. You have yet to learn Philippine history. To favor one family over thousands of martial law and human rights abuse victims is insulting to say the least to them and their families. You wouldn't even listen to the leftists in your cabinet; they who likewise suffered immensely during those dark days. And for what? To curry favor with the Marcoses? To fulfill a campaign promise? Because your father served in the Marcos cabinet? How much more shallow can your reasoning be?

On the other hand, several lawmakers stayed on point. Leyte 3rd District Representative Vicente Veloso, for example, refused to dwell on the relationship during the hearing. "Ayokong makialam doon. Wala kaming pakialam sa relasyon 'nyo ni Senator Leila de Lima (I don't want to interfere there. I don't care about your relationship with Senator Leila de Lima)," he said.

De Lima admitted their relationship 10 days prior to Dayan's testimony.

"Sinabi niya na kayo ay nagka-relasyon dahil sa kanyang 'frailties of a woman.' Naiintindihan mo ba ‘yung 'frailties of a woman'? 'Yung pagiging maselan bilang isang babae. (She said you two fell in love because of the "frailties of a woman." Do you understand the meaning of "frailties of a woman"? It means her weakness as a woman. My question for you is this: Did you take advantage of Leila de Lima during your relationship? Did she seem fragile to you when you started your relationship? Do you think that you took advantage of Leila de Lima's weakness as a woman during your relationship? When you said that you did not take advantage of her weakness as a woman, what did you mean?)

"Ito bang relasyon ninyo ay nababase sa tinatawag nating pagmamahal?" (Was your relationship based on what we call love?)

(Do you mean that your relationship can be considered true love? Was your love for Secretary De Lima pure and solid? Do you mean that based on your feelings, this love was pure and honest? (You said Senator De Lima did not reciprocate your pure love in the final moments of your relationship, right, when it was down to intensity 1? But when your relationship was at intensity 5, would you say that her love for you was also pure and honest? And because of that, you cannot betray Secretary De Lima by telling lies in this hearing?)

"Sa iyo bang pag-aakala ay naging tapat sa inyong pagmamahalan si Senadora De Lima?" (Do you believe Senator De Lima was honest to your relationship?)

"Ang pagsampal mo kay Secretary De Lima nung nalaman mo na siya ay may kaugnayan sa nagngangalan na Warren Cristobal ay isang pagpapakita ng pagselos dahil sa iyong wagas at dalisay na pagmamahal?" (You slapped Secretary De Lima when you found out that she had a new relationship with Warren Cristobal. Was it your way of showing jealousy since your love for her was pure?)

"Kaya totoo at makatarungan at tapat ang iyong pagmamahal sa kanya?" (So your love for her was true and honest?)

"Ito ay ginawa sapagkat tapat ang iyong damdamin kay Secretary De Lima. Ang ibig mo bang sabihin sa pagdinig na ito na ang iyong relasyon kay Secretary De Lima ay hindi lamang upang saluhan siya na magtampisaw sa pagmamahalan kung hindi siya ay saluhan din sa pagpawi ng init ng katawan?" On Thursday, however, Filipinos were virtually brought to the bedroom once shared by De Lima and Dayan. Prying into the affair, male lawmakers asked how the relationship started, how much they loved each other, what they did, where they went.

Criticized online, some lawmakers maintained they were all valid questions to drive home a point: that Dayan the bagman indeed had a close relationship with De Lima the drug protector.

Below is a list of some of the questions during the hearing that we believe the hearing could have done without, and who asked them.

'Kailan kayo nag-climax?': Nonsense questions at the Bilibid drugs hearing

Here are a few questions that we think the hearing could have done without

Rappler.com
November 25, 2016

MANILA, Philippines â€" It was crossing the line, according to many netizens. For Senator Leila de Lima, the hearing was a spectacle.

On Thursday, November 24, the House committee on justice reopened its probe into the narcotics trade inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) during De Lima's stint as justice secretary. The star of the show was her former security aide-driver and ex-lover, Ronnie Dayan, who is being accused by lawmakers, Bilibid convicts, and the justice department of serving as the senator's bagman in her alleged dealings with drug lords.

At the start of the hearing in September this year, committee chairperson Representative Reynaldo Umali dismissed suggestions that the probe was meant to humiliate De Lima. "This is not about De Lima, but about the proliferation of drug syndicates in the NBP," he said then.

"Well done, my brother," the ogre said in between gasps of air. "I can see that you have trained well."

"How did this happen?" the younger brother asked in disbelief. "Why...what.."

"You see, my brother," explained the ogre. "The true enemy is not the ogre who lives in the mountain, but the ogre who lives inside you."

"I don't understand..."

"Be strong... for now you are about to face your true enemy - yourself. The real test is not merely defeating the physical ogre, but defeating the temptations that will cause you to become the ogre that you have always hated."

The two fought long and hard, with neither gaining a distinct upperhand.

Eventually, fatigue caught up with the ogre. With one strong blow, the young man was able to bring down his monstrous opponent.

He drew his sword one last time. As he was about to lunge his bladed weapon to the body of the beast, he saw the ogre's face changing to that of his older brother. Instinctively, he dropped his sword and came to his brother's aid.

But return the older brother did not. The entire village mourned his death, for he was considered strong and capable of defeating the ogre.

Yet, his death served to fuel the younger brother's resolve to kill the ogre. He continued his training, and in time, he became as strong and as skilled as his late brother.

When the time came, the younger brother went up the mountain. There, he came face to face with the mighty and ugly beast that was the ogre.

Alas, when the time did come, the elder of the two brothers refused to take the younger one with him.

"You need to stay", he advised. "If ever I fail to return, you can train further and then go on and avenge my fall".

The young man did as he was told. Silently, he watched his older brother as he went up the mountain, uttering a short prayer that he will return the morning after.

The following is a paraphrasing of an old tale written by an anonymous writer and should particularly interest those who have plans of running for public office.

The Ogre That Never Dies

Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a village that was tormented by a huge and ugly ogre. Everyday, the ugly ogre would go down to the village from his home in the mountain and take away the villagers' food and other belongings. Those who resist were either killed or swallowed alive.

Not a few people tried to come up with a plan to kill the ogre. Men of great strength and skills would go up the mountain to attempt to kill the beast. All of them would no longer return to tell of their story.

Still, the villagers refused to lose all hope. Two brothers, in fact, trained long and hard so that at the appropriate time, they would both go up the mountain and kill the ogre together.

It will be interesting to see, should the burial be undone by Duterte or the courts, whether or not they will sit back down. Will they get distracted by the teleseryes in the Senate and House? By Facebook chatter? Or will knowledge continue to rise to welcome and arm the activists, to enlighten the gullible, and to push the Philippines toward modern thinking? Thinking that does not countenance EJKs or the death penalty or jailing 9 year-olds. Or running a government with sycophants who do not put the people first, but themselves and their allegiance to a President, right or wrong.

Knowledge is great.

It knows wrong.

It knows right.

In one of the most extreme ironies in this century, we can see that a wrong-headed deed promoted by the President of the Philippines awakened knowledge, through its disciples, people who actually read books and are not internet zombies.

Now the trolls will call them “elitists”, and Mocha Uson and Sass Sasot will condemn students and schools in an effort to put out the fires. But that can only inflame them more because knowledge knows truth from fiction and decency from indecency.

The Marcos burial awakened knowledge, and along with it, hope.

The young people of the Philippines, and the institutions to which they belong, have done Filipinos proud. They stood up. For truth, for decency, for honor.
#3978

Marcos gifted the Philippines with a half-century of broken nation and a lot of pain and poverty, never acknowledged by the Marcos family. That’s what knowledge knows.

Knowledge knows that the burial had Duterte sponsorship.

Knowledge can’t be swept under the rug by thousands of trolls pounding out propaganda on behalf of the State.

Knowledge is not political. It has no leader to crucify, no senator to set up as scape goat to distract attention from thousands of Filipinos being murdered, mostly poor people. It is knowledge.

KNOWLEDGE RISING IN THE PHILIPPINES

University students on the march against Marcos burial [Photo source: Rappler]

By Joe America

I think the Duterte Administration has a new enemy much stronger than the “Yellows”.  It is knowledge, an awakening of Philippine universities and students to the offensiveness of the Marcos burial. An awareness of history, a compassion for victims, and an understanding that this sneaky burial was simply not right. An awareness that Marcos was not a hero, but the great destroyer of the Philippine economy that left millions of dreams and opportunities lost in the rubble.

The difference she observed is that “this generation has entered the so-called ‘post-truth’ era where truth does not really matter any more.”

She said that when the supposed “truths” about purported “progress” under martial law becomes more fact than fiction, “we see a transformation of our values as a people.”

Morales describes ‘trying times’ amid Marcos burial, disrespect for rights

Between the hero’s burial for dictator Ferdinand Marcos and the seeming inability of leaders to tell right from wrong, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales has described how people now live in “trying times.”

Morales on Friday night delivered a scathing speech that warned of how “great people fall as prey and transform as predators themselves.”

“Just because you can, does not mean you should,” Morales said in what seemed to be an allusion to the reasoning that Marcos’ burial is not prohibited by law.

10. False: Fights cancer

A doctor and patient looking at cancer images | American Cancer Society/Getty Images

There are various studies that have tested to see if apple cider vinegar could possibly be a natural cancer fighter, but these studies are inconclusive, and they yield slightly conflicting results. World Health Net notes that while eating apple cider vinegar could lead to a reduced risk of developing esophageal cancer, another study found that this vinegar can lead to an increased risk of bladder cancer. The acidic properties of apple cider vinegar could mean that your digestive tract is cleaner and the chances of colon cancer and prostate cancer are slimmer, but this has yet to be proven as well.

Overall, it is suggested that regularly adding apple cider vinegar into your diet could help prevent cancerous cells from forming, but if you have a history of bladder cancer in your family, then it may be best to avoid it altogether.

9. False: Works best when undiluted

Vial filled with apple cider vinegar | iStock.com

Though you may be tempted to reap all of apple cider vinegar’s benefits by drinking it straight up, you could be doing serious damage to your esophagus. Livestrong suggests that a small amount of this vinegar (from a teaspoon to a tablespoon depending on personal preference) should be diluted in a full 8-ounce glass of water before drinking. The water will help protect your esophagus from the acidic burn, and you can drink this diluted mixture up to 3 times per day.

Don’t go above the recommended dosage, either â€" though apple cider vinegar has its benefits, drinking too much can cause potassium levels to drop and it can interfere with certain medications like blood-thinners, diuretics, or insulin.
#3989

8. False: Will worsen your heartburn

Woman holding out a heart symbol in her hands | iStock.com

When your chest aches with the familiar feeling of heartburn, you probably think that fighting acid with vinegar will never work, right? Actually, apple cider vinegar can be a safe natural remedy for heartburn, even though it is highly acidic. The Health Wyze Report explains that because the stomach is naturally acidic, there is no way that it can be “too acidic,” and that acid reflux is actually caused by a lack of acidity in the stomach. If you find yourself reaching for an antacid the next time you’re having stomach troubles, steer clear, as continuous usage not only will not clear your heartburn, but it can also be the very cause of further indigestion.

Apple cider vinegar works to fight heartburn by restoring acidity to your stomach. Drinking a tablespoon diluted in water will work better than any antacid, because it does exactly the opposite of an antacid â€" it provides your stomach with what it naturally needs to work properly.
#3990

7. False: Contains many vitamins and minerals

Apples | iStock.com

Many fans of love apple cider vinegar also claim that it boasts a heavy dosage of vitamins, minerals, fiber, complex carbs, and amino acids, and this is why the vinegar has such an incredible ability to heal the body. While this is a nice idea, it’s not based in any truth â€" Sandy Szwarc, BSN, RN, CCP, debunks the idea that apple cider vinegar is full of vitamins and minerals. In fact, apple cider vinegar has only trace amounts of any nutrients at all.

When looking at an analysis of what’s really in a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, there is no protein or fiber and only a minuscule amount of carbs, and there are only trace amounts of calcium, iron, zinc, and manganese. With the average adult needing 1000 milligrams of calcium a day, the mere 1 gram that apple cider vinegar offers will not be helpful in reaching that goal. The multiple helpful acidic properties of the vinegar are what offer the health boost, but if you’re looking for a way to add more nutrients into your diet, you’ll want to look elsewhere.
#3991

6. False: Great for whitening your teeth

Man brushing his teeth | iStock.com

While scrubbing your teeth with vinegar may seem like the perfect way to remove those coffee stains, you may want to reconsider. The Huffington Post explains that while brushing with apple cider vinegar may seem like a healthy and natural alternative to toothpaste, you’re ultimately doing serious damage to the enamel.

Apple cider vinegar is about as acidic as lemon juice, and even drinking this vinegar is likely to do damage to the teeth. If you are choosing to drink apple cider vinegar as part of a healthy diet, be sure to wait at least a half hour before brushing your teeth, even if you’re using toothpaste. The acidity from the vinegar being in your mouth combined with the brushing is likely to wear away at your enamel. Brush twice daily and use mouthwash recommended by your dentist, but do not rinse with apple cider vinegar.
#3992

4. True: Helps control blood sugar levels

Stethoscope and blood pressure monitor | iStock.com

If you’re a diabetic and looking for a natural way to control your blood sugar levels, apple cider vinegar may be your ticket. Carol Johnston, PhD, director of Arizona State University’s nutrition program, states in a WebMD story that apple cider vinegar is comparable to certain medications when it comes to its effects on blood sugar. This vinegar has an anti-glycemic effect that can block some starch from being digested. Starch can raise your blood sugar significantly once digested, so even blocking a bit of the starch is helpful in controlling blood sugar levels.

For this reason, apple cider vinegar may be of particular use for diabetics, but don’t ditch your medication for this holistic approach just yet. While apple cider vinegar is helpful in keeping blood sugar levels balanced, its affect on the increased production of stomach acid can still put a strain on your kidneys and bones. Focus on your overall diet to help with your diabetes at first. Then, consult your doctor to see if consuming this vinegar is a good idea for you.
#3993

3. True: Helps your digestive system

Apple cider vinegar can improve your digestion | iStock.com

Proper digestion is key to an overall healthier you â€" it’s the way we obtain nutrients from our food, and if your digestive system is not adequately processing the foods you eat, you certainly are not taking in as many nutrients as you should be. Branch Basics describes how hydrochloric acid (HCl) is incredibly important to our stomach cells, as it is responsible for protein digestion and the absorption of carbohydrates, fats, and certain vitamins and minerals. Without an adequate amount of this stomach acid, you aren’t fully digesting your food and taking these nutrients in.

So, how does apple cider vinegar help? Drinking a glass of water with a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar mixed in before a meal can help you digest your proteins, which can help your HCl stay at a healthy level. Also, marinating your meats in apple cider vinegar can help you digest them better. Be sure to drink this mixture around 20 minutes before you plan on eating. This can assist your digestive system immensely, and you’ll be absorbing even more nutrients than you were before.
#3994

2. True: Strengthens the immune system

A bundle of apples | iStock.com

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, and a tablespoon of apple cider a day might have the same effect. Livestrong states that combining a small amount of apple cider vinegar in with your water every day may be the key to curing your gastrointestinal issues and ultimately boosting your immune system.

If you’re consuming apple cider vinegar that’s unfiltered and unprocessed, this is even better for your immune system, as the “mother” can benefit your lymphatic system and cleanse your lymph nodes. If you’re prone to sinus congestion and allergies in the spring, apple cider vinegar may help alleviate those symptoms. There are also probiotics found in unfiltered apple cider vinegar that support a healthy digestive system, and probiotics can also help destroy bad bacteria and viruses that are found in your intestines.

1. True: Helps clear troubled skin

Apple cider vinegar and a basket of apples | iStock.com

If you have acne woes or dandruff, look no further than your local grocery store for the perfect remedy. While prescription medication can be tough on the skin and cause you flaking, dryness, and bigger skin issues than you had before, a little bit of apple cider vinegar mixed with water on a cotton swab makes for an excellent natural toner. Dr. Karen Hammerman, cosmetic dermatologist at Vanguard Dermatology in New York City, tells InStyle, “Skin is naturally acidic but when vinegar is used as a toner, it helps skin find the ideal balance between dry and oily.” To try using apple cider vinegar to treat your skin, InStyle recommends diluting one tablespoon of it with a few drops of water before applying.

10 Truths (and Lies) You Should Know About Apple Cider Vinegar

Lauren Weiler
November 24, 2016

While you may be familiar with the uses of white vinegar around your house for cleaning, or you may find yourself using a little bit of balsamic vinegar on your salad, there is one vinegar that you should start paying particular attention to. If you’re constantly looking for the best way to give your body a health boost and detox, adding a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar to your water each day may be beneficial â€" but you should also be wary of false health claims. While apple cider vinegar can be great for some ailments, it is not necessarily the miracle worker that it’s often advertised as.

Not all apple cider vinegars are created equal, either. Apple cider vinegar is made from fermented apples as the name suggests, and you’ll want to ensure that your particular brand of vinegar contains “the mother.” As Dr. Mercola states, “mother” is an amino-acid based accumulation that is only found in vinegars that have been fermenting for longer periods of time. It shows that the vinegar has been unprocessed and unfiltered, giving you the most health benefits that you can possibly gain â€" pasteurized apple cider vinegar will not have the same benefits.

Here are 10 facts about apple cider vinegar that can help you determine if you should be adding more of this ingredient into your diet.

For as long as the Marcoses insist that Ferdinand Sr. deserves a hero's spot in land that we all own, his resting place will be anything but. Around that plot will erupt a battle to create a symbol. Of what? Of moving on or of refusing to budge? When the day comes, will you go to the gravesite? What will you bring? Flowers? Candles? Or things less fragrant?

Filipinos will move on, one way or another. The question is, to what? Whether the Marcoses will regret or gloat, whether we move on or march forward, will be determined by each Filipino's completing this sentence: "One day I will visit that grave and ____________."

Two dates, two rallies, two venues - neither of which is anywhere near the LNMB - frankly make for ridiculous, comical scenes when both purport to make a point about how Bongbong's making a political pawn of his father's corpse will unite those who #NeverForget. But we suspect â€" and any truly loving Marcos child should fear - that there will be not a few moments when beyond the rallies, groups and individuals will indeed be visiting LNMB and paying Marcos the respect they think he deserves.

Nothing can stop them. Nothing should stop them. The LNMB is a public place. No Filipino should be denied entry, nor even be so much as questioned as to why he or she is there. Force the Supreme Court to explain that to Duterte, so he can shrug when Bongbong requests for round-the-clock security for their plot.

Just saying: It will be an impossible task keeping that tomb spotless. If Marcos taught Filipinos that the price of liberty is eternal vigilance, Filipinos will likely prove to Bongbong that that too is the price he and his siblings will pay just to convince themselves they did not unearth their father to subject him to… what?

As a politician, the President must be persuaded that burying Marcos at the LNMB is not only a mistake, it is not worth it. Appealing to his political sensibilities may seem a long shot or wishful thinking. But it is no more delusional than counting on the SC Justices to take away the President's options after they gave it to him. It is certainly no more delusional than insisting that underneath the anti-Marcos movement is a silent anti-Duterte majority.

Duterte, as Father of the Nation, can take it as tantrums of temperamental brats, or he can take it as well-meaning warning: If he wants the nation to heal, listening to Bongbong will only be damaging.

The Marcoses, too, must be made to regret. In wanting us to forgive, Bongbong should meet a people decidedly more unforgiving. We are asked to unite behind indifference to atrocities; let us be more obnoxious about justice. Bongbong would bury his father. Let us unearth everything we have forgotten or may have overlooked, particularly over the quarter century that Marcos Sr. was lying peacefully in a private mausoleum in Batac. The son thinks it a triumph to have transferred his father to a public cemetery imbued with higher public purpose? He should see, everyday, what exactly he wished for.

Make no mistake, President Duterte must be held accountable for whatever comes next. Discord, disunity... violence?

But what if Filipinos do in fact move on? If even those most outraged today run out of stamina tomorrow; if the protests do not grow and in fact never make it out of Facebook; if this insult does not disrupt nor even interrupt talks with the Left for whom "a just and lasting peace" is a pillar of negotiation; if, as Bongbong has exhumed his father, there is no effort to breathe new life into the cases against their entire clan…

In other words, if there is no political price to pay... then Duterte deserves the chance to prove that there is progress worth the perilous path of denial and apathy that we all will have paved.
