They also used a microphone and recording unit capable of registering sounds up 96 kHz. The upper limit of human hearing is generally set at 20 kHz, and frequencies above this limit are classified as ultrasound. In the field, the team recorded the sounds of 35 wild tarsiers from the islands of Bohol and Leyte with this equipment, documenting eight individuals giving out a purely ultrasonic call at approximately 70 kHz. The tone-like structure of the call resembles those of other tarsier species, but none were purely ultrasonic.

The researchers observed that tarsiers emitted their ultrasonic call when humans were near, suggesting they were voicing alarm. “Ultrasonic alarm calls can be advantageous to both the signaler and receiver as they are potentially difficult for predators to detect and localize,” they write.

Dominy and his group conclude that there may be selective advantages to vocalizations in the pure ultrasound. They call them “private channels of communication with the potential to subvert detection by predators, prey, and competitors.”

“Our findings not only verify that tarsiers are sensitive to the ultrasound, but also that Tarsius syrichta can send and receive vocal signals in the pure ultrasound,” Dominy says.

Associate Professor of Anthropology Nathaniel Dominy studies tarsiers in the Philippines. (Photo by Eli Burak ’00)

Dominy and a cadre of colleagues have been studying the hearing and vocalizations of one tarsier species in the Philippines, Tarsius syrichta. Results of their research appeared online in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters, on February 8, 2012.

Some species of tarsier seem rather talkative, with a range of calls audible to humans and capable of “conveying alarm, deterring rivals, and facilitating social interactions,” the authors note. In contrast, tarsiers from Borneo and the Philippines have conventionally been described as “ordinarily silent.” This apparent lack of vocalizations led investigators to suspect that the animals were indeed engaged in these critical communications. We just couldn’t hear them.

Recent technical advances allowed the investigators to test the hearing of six wild tarsiers on the island of Mindanao. They found “an audible range that extended substantially into the ultrasound,” reaching a high of 91 kilohertz (kHz), “a value that surpasses the known range of all other primates and is matched by few animals.”

Tiny Primate is Ultrasonic Communicator, Dartmouth Professor Finds
http://now.dartmouth.edu/
February 08, 2012
by Joseph Blumberg

Tarsiers are pint-size primates from Southeast Asia who produce some of the most extreme ultrasonic calls in the animal kingdom, well beyond the threshold of human hearing.

The Philippine tarsier, Tarsius syrichta, is the focus of a study on its ultrasonic mode of communication. (Photo courtesy of Nathaniel Dominy)

They belong to a relict lineage of primates that gave rise to monkeys and apes about 60 million years ago, and for the past 45 million years tarsiers have been largely unchanged. Although tarsiers are important “living fossils,” they are difficult to study in the wild. Scarcely five inches high, they are nocturnal and subsist mostly on a diet of insects, along with some small vertebrates such as lizards and snakes.

Nathaniel Dominy, an associate professor of anthropology at Dartmouth, describes the tarsier’s ultrasonic vocalizations as “extreme, and comparable to the highly specialized vocalizations of bats and dolphins, which are used primarily for echolocation.”

China is contributed to the slowing of world trade. In value terms, it shrank slightly last year, but in volume terms, it edged higher. In recent years, the cross-border movement of goods and capital have not recovered to pre-crisis rates. However, there are three mitigating factors.

First, this is partly a function of prices. Imagine a simple two-country one-product model. Say the price of the product (oil) falls 50%. All else being equal the value of trade would be halved. China's imports of crude oil reached a new record in February, and the volume of iron ore import rose 6.4%.

Second, many economists had argued that global imbalances were a threat to the world economy. The weaker growth in trade volumes coincides with a general reduction of these imbalances. On the other hand, slower growth may translate into weaker trade. This suggests as growth improves so will trade.

Third, for numerous reasons, it is possible that we are also in the early days of a new form of globalization. On top of the network of linkages for trade and capital, there has been a dramatic increase in a new type of cross-border movement--information. Think about instant messages and emails across national frontiers, Skype callsEbay/Amazon orders. Imagine downloading a "blueprint" for a widget from a website into your 3D printer.

Distortions caused by the Lunar New Year are well known. In 2015, the Lunar New Year was in late February and the effect carried into March. That suggests that investors will have a better idea of this year's distortion with next month's report.

Economists typically average January and February data to get a better picture. Doing so this year shows a 17.8% decline in exports and a 16.7% decline in imports. The export order components of official and Caixin PMIs warn of weakness. Global demand is soft. The decline in China's shipments to Taiwan fell for 13-months through February. Exports to South Korea fell for the 14th month.

China reported exports to the US, Germany, France, Japan, Canada, ASEAN, and Hong Kong all fell by more than 20% in February. But combining the January and February performance may offer some clarity. For example, exports to the US fell 23% in February and almost 10% in January. Combined exports to the US fell by around 16.5%. Chinese exports to Japan fell 20% in February and 6% in January, averaging a 13% decline.

However, if trade invoices are being used to disguise capital outflows, averaging the January and February figures may not always be helpful. Consider Chinese trade with Hong Kong. We must again protest that this is called trade in the first place. Hong Kong is part of China. To consider trade and capital flows between the two as international is misleading.

In any event, China reported that it imports from Hong Kong surged 108% in January and 88.7% in February. This is suspicious,to say the least. In January, Hong Kong reported exports to the mainland fell almost 8%. The suspicion is that mainland businesses over-invoiced imports from Hong Kong to circumvent capital controls on moving funds offshore.

Hong Kong reports its February trade figures on March 29. Investors will track this and other countries' trade figures to glean insight into China's trade figures. Not that there is a one-to-one correspondence between Chinese trade figures and their partners, but the sharp fall in Chinese exports to the US could point to a smaller US trade deficit.

China's economy is slowing, and officials are responding. The recent 50 bp cut in reserve requirements is thought to free up around $100 bln for domestic banks. The government has indicated that the budget deficit will rise this year to 3% of GDP from 2.3% in 2015. This may not sound like a large deficit from the US or Europe's perspective, but it will be the largest national deficit for China since the late 1970s. The PBOC increased in M2 growth target to 13% this year from the 12% target that it overshot last year.

Investors are skeptical of Chinese economic data. However, news Tuesday that Chinese exports fell by a quarter in February shocked investors. Many worry about the implications not just for China, but for world growth. It comes as the IMF is signaling it will likely cut its 3.4% global growth forecast next month.

There are three separate forces that impacted Chinese trade figures. First are price changes. The dramatic drop in commodity prices, for example, distorts the value of imports (and exports). Chinese producer prices have been falling on a year-over-year basis for nearly four years. Second, there actually is a slowdown in Chinese trade, reflecting softer domestic demand and foreign demand. However, the actual decline in trade was likely distorted by the Lunar New Year celebration. Third, with the threat of additional yuan weakness, there appears to have been a revival of tactics to using trade invoicing to hide capital flows (now outflows).

Ever since he appeared on The Ellen Show in May 2015 dancing to the pop hit “Bang Bang,” a little boy from the Philippines has been commanding a lot of attention on both television and the internet â€" and now he’s back with a new video.

Seven-year-old John Phillip Bughaw (who goes by the mononym “Balang” these days) has been back on to see Mrs. Degeneres, dancing flawlessly to “Single Ladies” and “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae).”

This time, from his home in the Philippines, he dances to Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” with an ease and confidence befitting to the prince of pop. Since posting his tribute to the Biebs on Facebook, it’s gone crazy viral, amassing more than 11 million views in only two days.

And lest we not forget, Bieber himself praised Balang’s performance yesterday in a tweet:

Poetry helps men to shed prejudice, and so we find certain Protestant poets, in their moments of poetic rapture, writing exquisite things about the Blessed Virgin. The following beautiful lines come from the pen of Wordsworth:

Mother whose virgin bosom was uncrossed
With the least shade of thought to sin allied.
Woman! above all women glorified,
Our tainted nature’s solitary boast;
Purer than foam on central ocean tossed;
Brighter than eastern skies at daybreak strewn
With fancied roses; than unblemished moon
Before her wane begins on heaven’s blue coast.

Longfellow, another non-Catholic poet, has given us a lovely poem:

This is indeed the Blessed Mary’s land!
Virgin and Mother of our dear Redeemer;
All hearts are touched and softened at her name;
Alike the bandit, with the bloody hand,
The priest, the prince, the scholar, and the peasant,
The man of deeds, the visionary dreamer,
Pay homage to her as one ever present!
And even as children who have much offended
A too-indulgent father, in great shame,
Penitent, and yet not daring unattended
To go into his presence, at the gate
Speak with their sister, and confiding wait
Till she goes in before and intercedes;
So men, repenting of their evil deeds,
And yet, not venturing rashly to draw near
With their requests an angry father’s ear,
Offer to her their prayers and their confession,
And she for them in heaven makes intercession.
And if our faith had given us nothing more
Than this example of all womanhood,
So mild, so merciful, so strong, so good,
So patient, peaceful, loyal, loving, pure,
This were enough to prove it higher and truer
Than all the creeds the world had known before.

Crystal Cruises’ reputation and the availability of dance hosts for passengers traveling alone (there are meet-and-greet cocktail parties and other events for people traveling alone) are what really sold me on the Crystal Serenity.

I enjoy dancing, and this I believe is the best cruise line that still uses dance hosts. My husband didn’t dance, just didn’t like to, but encouraged me to dance with the hosts. Before the Serenity, I lived on a Holland America liner for three years. The day they announced they were stopping the dance host program was the day I decided to leave.

I love to eat and regularly dine at a table for eight. You meet interesting passengers that way. Since coming on board more than seven years ago, I’ve put on 23 pounds. To shake them off, I went on a four-month liquid and fruit diet. It was working, but the pounds came back after resuming my normal eating habits. I just order half portions now and believe what they say. “The older you get, the harder it is to lose weight.”

[Boys play with dolls, and girls play with spaceships. Someone tell the toy makers.]

Most days I spend quite a bit of time in the bright Palm Court lounge doing needlepoint work. It’s my second love. Been doing it for 50 years and have helped teach it to other passengers. Whatever I make, I give to crew members. They really bend over backward to keep me happy. If they don’t have what I want, they get it even if they have to buy it off the ship or custom make it. One crew member built extra storage shelves for me. Another made a neat framed cushion wall hanging that holds almost all my earrings.

As a former registered nurse with a good immune system, I’ve very rarely felt the need to see the ship’s doctor. But trying to get rid of a lingering, nasty cold once, I did. His RX: “You have laryngitis. Don’t talk.”

I’m so spoiled that I doubt I would ever be able readjust to the real world.

As told to Si Liberman, a New Jersey-based journalist and travel writer who profiled Lee Wachtstetter for USA Today.

Here I am today, nearly eight years later, turning 88 in May, sailing to Sydney. I’ve been on this 12-year-old vessel longer than almost all of its 655 crew members. At the captain’s cocktail parties, I’m often honored as the passenger with the greatest number of Crystal cruises (400 altogether, including 15 world cruises).

I rarely go ashore nowadays because I’ve probably already been there several times. When most everybody else goes, it‘s so quiet, and I have almost the whole ship to myself. I’ll read, watch a movie, continue my needlepoint work or just take a nap.

What most I miss, of course, is my family. I manage to get my mail and keep in touch with my three sons and seven grandchildren with my laptop. I’m also blessed with a 2-year-old great grandson who’ll be getting twin brothers in July. I hear from a family member almost everyday, and visit with them whenever we dock in Miami. Last year we docked there five times.

Cathy Lee, my daughter, died five years ago at age 59. Most of my close friends in Florida are also gone. Now, as a longtime cruiser, though, I get to make new friends all the time.

Three other women live on the ship like I do, but none for nearly as long as I have. Perks come in the form of nice floral arrangements, occasional shipboard credits and actual cash rewards upon reaching high-level cruise number milestones.

About $450 is my daily average cost. It’s pricey, but luckily my husband was an excellent provider.

I still remember his words. “Don’t stop cruising,” my husband told me the day before he died of cancer in 1997. Mason was a banker and real estate appraiser who introduced me to cruising. During our 50 years together, we had taken 89 cruises.

Alone and struggling to maintain a large four-bedroom home after his death, I took my daughter’s advice, sold our house and a lifetime’s accumulation of furnishings and collectibles and became a permanent resident on a five-star cruise ship.

That decision took quite a bit of soul searching. I worried about distancing myself from friends and family. But as I thought about it, I realized that my children were grown and doing their own thing. Nothing was holding me back.

(BANAT NEWS)

MANILA, Philippines â€" John Philip “Balang” Bughaw, the 6-year old kid who became known for his adorable dancing appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last week.

In his interview with Ellen, Balang said through an interpreter that he was very happy to be in the US because he loves chocolates.

“Kasi po marami…pero sakit ngipin pero toothbrush,” Balang said. (There are so many [chocolates], I'll get a toothache, but I'll brush my teeth.)

According to Balang, he learned to dance while listening to music on television. His favorite song to dance to aside from “Bang Bang” is “All About That Bass.”

After his performance, Balang was rewarded by Ellen, who also loves to dance, with a giant stash of chocolates.

Balang recently appeared on It's Showtime's "Mini Me" segment. â€" Rappler.com

Protestant Poets and Devotion to Mary

Devotion to Mary is so beautiful a practice and fits in so harmoniously in the plan of the Christian religion that the Christian soul, untrammelled or untainted by prejudice, instinctively recognizes its truth. I have not infrequently been struck by the fact that Protestant children, who have as yet been given no bias against this devotion, quickly perceive its loveliness and are strongly attracted by it when once they are given even an elementary idea of it. And even more mature non-Catholic children are sometimes at a loss to know why they have been turned against such a sweet, appealing devotion. I once heard a Presbyterian girl of twelve, who had seen a picture of Our Lady of Good Counsel, ask her mother: "Why don’t Protestants honor the Mother of Jesus?"

The nanny who allegedly murdered a 4-year-old girl and then paraded through Moscow with her severed head has said she murdered the child to avenge the deaths of Muslims in Syria killed by Russian airstrikes.

In a video published on YouTube late Wednesday and circulated by Russian media and bloggers, Gyulchekhra Bobokulova, a 38-year-old Muslim woman from Uzbekistan, told a man asking her questions off-camera that she "took revenge against those who spilled blood."

"Putin spilled blood, planes carried out bombings. Why are Muslims being killed? They also want to live," Bobokulova continued, speaking very matter-of-factly.

Mashable could not verify the authenticity of the video. It was not clear when it was filmed, and the conditions under which she gave the testimony are unknown.

Bobokulova has been in the custody of Russian law enforcement since her arrest on Monday and appeared in court in Moscow on Wednesday. She is seen in the video wearing the same black and blue clothes she had during her court appearance, when she reportedly told a reporter that "Allah ordered" her to kill.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow on Monday that her remarks should be regarded as those of someone who is mentally unwell, Reuters reported.

"You need to regard anything that such a deranged woman says accordingly," Peskov said.

Russian state TV channels, typically known for broadcasting sensational and often gory stories, have chosen not to report on the killing.

But Russian online news outlets have. In an interview with Gazeta.ru, the father of the murdered girl, named Nastya, says Bobokulova had never worked as a nanny before he hired her. He also said he did not recall her ever being devoutly religious and claimed his daughter was frightened by her.

The Gazeta.ru report also detailed Bobokulova's history and painted her as a mentally troubled divorced mother of three sons who had been in and out of psychiatric hospitals before coming to Moscow.

Bobokulova was wearing all black and waving the little girl's severed head while shouting in Russian "I'm a terrorist! I want your death!" before police detained her outside the Oktyabrskoe Pole metro station in northwest Moscow on Monday.

Police were criticized for taking more than 20 minutes to grab her, allowing time for several onlookers to film and upload disturbing videos of the incident.

Russian investigators said Bobokulova used a knife to decapitate the girl before setting fire to the family's apartment and fleeing the scene with the child's head. -- http://mashable.com/

This photograph is of Shanghai’s waterfront. It’s one of the biggest photos ever; it contains 24.9 billion-pixels in a full panorama of the Huangpu River and its surrounding area. The company behind the shot, Big Pixel Studio, describes the image as “China’s first 10-billion pixel panoramic photo with more than 30 million page views.” But the best thing about this can be found by the more eagle-eyed (or bored) if you zoom in……..

Statues and Pictures of Mary

But why, someone may ask, do Catholics have statues or pictures of Mary in their churches and homes? Is it not against the first (or second) commandment to make graven images? No, it is against God’s laws to adore images, not to make them; otherwise we should have to abolish all such things as dolls, for are they not "graven images"? And does anyone imagine that it is against the first commandment to make dolls or to give them to children? God even commanded the making of certain images in the Old Law, as we read in various parts of the Old Testament. For instance, he ordered Moses to make two cherubim (angels) of beaten gold (Ex. 25:18).

If non-Catholics approve of the making and erecting of statues of Queen Victoria or King Edward or General MacArthur or Charles Dickens or Roosevelt (and in this we agree with them), how can they possibly see anything objectionable in making a statue of the Blessed Virgin, Mother of the King of kings, and putting it in a prominent place? We ask our friends outside the Church to be fair and not to attempt playing "Heads I win, and tails you lose."

As to the custom of lighting candles and placing vases of flowers before the statue or picture of the Blessed Virgin, no person can reasonably object to this practice who would approve of a college boarder plucking flowers, arranging them nicely in vases, and putting them in front of her mother’s photo, which she had placed on the mantelpiece in her room. If the latter is a praiseworthy practiceâ€"as every person endowed with reason and affection admitsâ€"surely the former custom is equally laudable. Likewise, if a child may laudably kiss the photo of her absent mother, in order to show her love for her (though the child well knows that the photo itself is an inanimate, unresponsive object), so Catholics are worthy of praise when they kiss a picture or statue of Mary in order to express the love they have for the living Queen of Heaven, whom the image represents. . .

Uproar as Zimbabwe's Mister Ugly winner deemed 'too handsome'
Crowd favourite claims the man who beat him to the title only won because he has missing teeth and is not ‘naturally ugly’
Associated Press
Monday 23 November 2015 01.25 GMT Last modified on Monday 23 November 2015 12.28 GMT

Judges have crowned a new winner of Zimbabwe’s 4th annual Mister Ugly contest, upsetting supporters of the crowd favourite and prompting violence at the event.

Judges on Saturday chose 42-year-old Mison Sere, citing his numerous missing front teeth and a wide range of grotesque facial expressions, over William Masvinu, who had held the title since 2012.

Masvinu and his supporters mobbed the judges upon hearing their decision, claiming that Sere was “too handsome” to win and his ugliness wasn’t natural since it was based on missing teeth.

“I am naturally ugly. He is not. He is ugly only when he opens his mouth,” maintained Masvinu, gesturing at his rival.

“Do we have to lose our teeth to win? This is cheating,” shouted another contestant, Patrick Mupereki.

Memoirs of an Egotist, Stendhal’s fragmentary autobiographical work, is alert, wry, and perpetually self-questioning. Through a series of apparently random impressions of the political, social, and artistic movements of the world around him, he imbues a range of human experience, from the mundane to the extraordinary, with the significance it deserves. Containing everything from delightful thumbnail sketches of his friends and colleagues, to lyrical remembrances of gardens and operas and tenderly amused descriptions of tea with London prostitutes, Memoirs of an Egotist is as startling as it is revealing.

How To Tips / How To Be Miserable
March 03, 2016, 11:44:12 AM
Think about yourself. Talk about yourself. Use ‘I’ as often as possible. Mirror yourself continually in the opinion of others. Listen greedily to what people say about you. Expect to be appreciated. Be suspicious. Be jealous and envious. Be sensitive to slights. Never forgive a criticism. Trust nobody but yourself. Insist on consideration and respect. Demand agreement with your own views on everything. Sulk if people are not grateful to you for favors shown them. Never forget a service you have rendered. --Unknown
