(Stephanie V. Berganio)

Lobotomy (Greek: λοβόÏ, â€" lobos: "lobe (of brain)"; Ï,,ομή â€" tomÄ": "cut/slice") is a neurosurgical procedure, a form of psychosurgery, also known as a leukotomy or leucotomy (from the Greek λεÏ...κόÏ, â€" leukos: "clear/white" and tome). It consists of cutting the connections to and from the prefrontal cortex, the anterior part of the frontal lobes of the brain. While the procedure, initially termed a leucotomy, has been controversial since its inception in 1935, it was a mainstream procedure for more than two decades, prescribed for psychiatric (and occasionally other) conditionsâ€"this despite general recognition of frequent and serious side-effects.

Half of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine of 1949 was awarded to António Egas Moniz for the "discovery of the therapeutic value of leucotomy in certain psychoses". The heyday of its usage was from the early 1940s until the mid-1950s when modern neuroleptic (antipsychotic) medications were introduced. By 1951, almost 20,000 lobotomies had been performed in the United States. --Wiki

A frontal lobotomy is a surgical procedure, performed on the brain of someone who suffers from certain psychiatric conditions. Now considered a barbaric procedure, frontal lobotomies were developed and performed at a time when the mentally ill were routinely placed in asylums. While the cure rate using frontal lobotomies was not high, it was the first treatment that showed any improvement at all for many patients. In a frontal lobotomy, the patient has the connection to the prefrontal cortex severed. The prefrontal cortex is the front section of the frontal lobe of the brain.

The first frontal lobotomy was performed in 1935, and the procedure was widely used throughout the 1940s through the mid 1950s. The development of antipsychotic medications in the mid 1950s reduced the number of frontal lobotomies gradually. It took years for antipsychotic medications to replace the frontal lobotomy as the treatment of choice for many types of mental disorders.

Initially, the frontal lobotomy was an invasive procedure that required the doctor to drill holes through the skull and into the brain. The physician then used alcohol or a specialized tool to destroy portions of the brain. Later, physicians modified the procedure, and doctors accessed the brain through the eye socket. This made the procedure possible on patients in state hospitals that would not otherwise have access to a medical treatment that required a surgical room, anesthesia and intensive postoperative care. -- http://www.wisegeek.org/

St Joseph of Cupertino (1603-63) Franciscan priest and ecstatic
http://www.catholicireland.net/

Known for his ungainly appearance and his levitations, Joseph had also an extraordinary humility, gentleness and patience. He is the patron of students who find it difficult to pass examinations.

Patrick Duffy tells his story.

Ungainly appearance

Born the son of a carpenter, Joseph was absent-minded and had such an ungainly appearance that he was given the nickname Boccaperta ("opend-mouthed" or "the gaper"). He had no great academic ability, but managed to learn to read the Breviary and the Missal and get himself ordained as a Franciscan priest.

Levitation and desolation

He practised austerities which soon led to him lifting off the ground up in the air - levitating. Accused by his fellow Franciscans of deception and fraud, they forbade him to say Mass in public or take part in public ceremonies. But people came to consult him and, although wonders seemed to surround him, he felt God had deserted him.

Kept in seclusion

Tried by the Inquisition, they found him not guilty of any deliberate fraud, but transferred him from the Franciscans to the Capuchins. Here his levitations were still disruptive and they kept him in seclusion. Even on his deathbed, when he heard the bell announcing that they were bringing him communion for the last time - for the last time he levitated; he rose off the bed and floated out into the hall to meet the Blessed Sacrament.

Death and beatification

After his death on 18th September 1663, there was an immediate popular upsurge of veneration for him. When the cause for his canonisation was presented almost a century later, the "devil's advocate" Prospero Lambertini, who was known to be most sceptical of supernatural events, declared that eye-witnesses reporting incidents about Joseph were trustworthy and that he was worthy of sainthood because of his extraordinary humility, gentleness and patience. Lambertini later became Pope Benedict XIV and beatified Joseph in 1753.  Joseph was canonised 14 years later in 1767.

Patronage

Joseph is the patron of aviators and astronauts and of students who find it difficult to pass examinations.

On October 4, 1630, the town of Cupertino held a procession on the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi. Joseph was assisting in the procession when he suddenly soared into the sky, where he remained hovering over the crowd. When he descended and realized what had happened, he became so embarrassed that he fled to his mother's house and hid. This was the first of many flights, which soon earned him the nickname "The Flying Saint".

Joseph's life changed dramatically after this incident. His flights continued and came with increasing frequency. His superiors, alarmed at his lack of control, forbade him from community exercises, believing he would cause too great a distraction for the friary. For the fact was, Joseph could not contain himself. On hearing the names of Jesus or Mary, the singing of hymns during the feast of St. Francis, or while praying at Mass, he would go into a dazed state and soar into the air, remaining there until a superior commanded him under obedience to revive.

Joseph's most famous flight allegedly occurred during a papal audience before Pope Urban VIII. When he bent down to kiss the Pope's feet, he was suddenly filled with reverence for Christ's Vicar on earth, and was lifted up into the air. Only when the Minister General of the Order, who was part of the audience, ordered him down was Joseph able to return to the floor.

From Wikipedia

Saint Joseph of Cupertino, O.F.M. Conv., (Italian: San Giuseppe da Copertino) (June 17, 1603 â€" September 18, 1663) was an Italian Franciscan friar who is honored as a mystic and a saint. He was said to have been remarkably unclever, but prone to miraculous levitation and intense ecstatic visions that left him gaping. In turn, he is recognized as the patron saint of air travelers, aviators, astronauts, people with a mental handicap, test takers, and poor students. He was canonized in 1767.
