I talked it over with councilors, resident advisers, and or resident directors. Its best to maintain a calm leveled mind when assessing a tense situation and refrain from drama.

When i was a teacher's assistant in college, one very difficult situation was the issue of copying/cheating and plagiarizing. In molecular biology lab, I had a situation where I was giving out lab practicals. There were 4 gentlemen, all of them had hats. Aand the cap was in a different location. I noticed that every 60 seconds or so one of them would touch their hat, and the rest would write down. I told the other TAs about this and we observed it again, and they continued to do it.

Immediately, I knew they were cheating. These guys were pretty smart, as they had decent marks in the 3 other lab exams i gave, as well as the lab quizzes. I was in a dilemma, of should I warn them or outright take their scantron sheets?

I followed my instinct. I went up to each of them, took their scantron papers, told them to leave the room. And they all did, without complaining. They knew I caught them.

I took their papers, and with a black pen, drew a straight line over their scantron exam. I failed them for that.

Powerful so powerful
Your glory fills the skies
Your mighty works displayed for all to see (beautiful)
The beauty of your majesty
Awakes my heart to see
How marvelous how wonderful you are.

Beautiful one I love
Beautiful one I adore
Beautiful one my soul must sing
Beautiful one I love you

You opened my eyes to your wonders anew
You captured my heart with this love
Because nothing on Earth is as beautiful as you (Jesus)
You opened my eyes to your wonders anew
You captured my heart with this love
Because nothing on Earth is as beautiful as you.

Lyrics:

You spread out the skies over empty space
Said, let there be light
To a dark and formless world
Your light was born
You spread out your arms over empty hearts
Said, let there be light
To a dark and hopeless world
Your son was born

You made the world and saw that it was good
You sent your only son, for you are good

What a wonderful maker
What a wonderful savior
How majestic your whispers
And how humble your love
With a strength like no other
And the heart of a father
How majestic your whispers
What a wonderful God

No eye has fully seen how beautiful the cross
And we have only heard the faintest whispers
Of how great you are

You made the world and saw that it was good
You sent your only son, for you are good

What a wonderful maker
What a wonderful savior
How majestic your whispers
And how humble your love
With a strength like no other
And the heart of a father
How majestic your whispers
What a wonderful God

You made the world and saw that it was good
You sent your only son, for you are good

What a wonderful maker
What a wonderful savior
How majestic your whispers
And how humble your love
With a strength like no other
And the heart of a father
How majestic your whispers
What a wonderful God

how majestic your whispers
what a wonderful God

There are Anti Viral Drugs that can combat this virus.

Antiviral Drugs
Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) with activity against influenza viruses, including swine influenza viruses. Antiviral drugs can be used to treat swine flu or to prevent infection with swine flu viruses. These medications must be prescribed by a health care professional. Influenza antiviral drugs only work against influenza viruses -- they will not help treat or prevent symptoms caused by infection from other viruses that can cause symptoms similar to the flu.

There are four influenza antiviral drugs approved for use in the United States (oseltamivir, zanamivir, amantadine and rimantadine). The swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses that have been detected in humans in the United States and Mexico are resistant to amantadine and rimantadine so these drugs will not work against these swine influenza viruses. Laboratory testing on these swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses so far indicate that they are susceptible (sensitive) to oseltamivir and zanamivir.

What is H1N1 (swine flu)?

H1N1 (referred to as “swine flu” early on) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in April 2009 in the United States. Other countries, including Mexico and Canada, have reported people sick with this new virus. This virus is spreading from person-to-person, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread.

Why is this new H1N1 virus sometimes called “swine flu”?

This virus was originally referred to as “swine flu” because laboratory testing showed that many of the genes in this new virus were very similar to influenza viruses that normally occur in pigs in North America. But further study has shown that this new virus is very different from what normally circulates in North American pigs. It has two genes from flu viruses that normally circulate in pigs in Europe and Asia and avian genes and human genes. Scientists call this a “quadruple reassortant” virus.

Do pigs carry this virus and can I catch this virus from a pig?
At this time, there is no evidence that swine in the United States are infected with this new virus. However, there are flu viruses that commonly cause outbreaks of illness in pigs. Most of the time, these viruses do not infect people, but influenza viruses can spread back and forth between pigs and people.

Are there human infections with this H1N1 virus in the U.S.?

Yes. Cases of human infection with this H1N1 influenza virus were first confirmed in the U.S. in Southern California and near Guadalupe County, Texas. The outbreak intensified rapidly from that time and more and more states have been reporting cases of illness from this virus. An updated case count of confirmed novel H1N1 flu infections in the United States is kept at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/investigation.htm. CDC and local and state health agencies are working together to investigate this situation.

Is this new H1N1 virus contagious?
CDC has determined that this new H1N1 virus is contagious and is spreading from human to human. However, at this time, it is not known how easily the virus spreads between people.

What are the signs and symptoms of this virus in people?

The symptoms of this new influenza A H1N1 virus in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. A significant number of people who have been infected with this virus also have reported diarrhea and vomiting.  Also, like seasonal flu, severe illnesses and death has occurred as a result of illness associated with this virus.

How severe is illness associated with this new H1N1 virus?

It’s not known at this time how severe this virus will be in the general population. CDC is studying the medical histories of people who have been infected with this virus to determine whether some people may be at greater risk from infection, serious illness or hospitalization from the virus. In seasonal flu, there are certain people that are at higher risk of serious flu-related complications. This includes young children, pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions and people 65 and older. It’s unknown at this time whether certain groups of people are at greater risk of serious flu-related complications from infection with this new virus. CDC also is conducting laboratory studies to see if certain people might have natural immunity to this virus, depending on their age.

How does this new H1N1 virus spread?

Spread of this H1N1 virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

Can I get infected with this new H1N1 virus from eating or preparing pork?

No. H1N1 viruses are not spread by food. You cannot get this new HIN1 virus from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork products is safe. But evade uncooked pork or pork from Mexico and Latin countries

Is there a risk from drinking water?

Tap water that has been treated by conventional disinfection processes does not likely pose a risk for transmission of influenza viruses. Current drinking water treatment regulations provide a high degree of protection from viruses. No research has been completed on the susceptibility of the novel H1N1 flu virus to conventional drinking water treatment processes. However, recent studies have demonstrated that free chlorine levels typically used in drinking water treatment are adequate to inactivate highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza. It is likely that other influenza viruses such as novel H1N1 would also be similarly inactivated by chlorination. To date, there have been no documented human cases of influenza caused by exposure to influenza-contaminated drinking water.

What should I do to keep from getting the flu?
First and most important: wash your hands. Try to stay in good general health. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. Try not to touch surfaces that may be contaminated with the flu virus. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Are there medicines to treat infection with this new virus?
Yes. CDC recommends the use of oseltamivir or zanamivir for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with these new influenza A (H1N1) viruses. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that fight against the flu by keeping flu viruses from reproducing in your body. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. They may also prevent serious flu complications. During the current outbreak, the priority use for influenza antiviral drugs during is to treat severe influenza illness.

How long can an infected person spread this virus to others?
At the current time, CDC believes that this virus has the same properties in terms of spread as seasonal flu viruses. With seasonal flu, studies have shown that people may be contagious from one day before they develop symptoms to up to 7 days after they get sick.  Children, especially younger children, might potentially be contagious for longer periods. CDC is studying the virus and its capabilities to try to learn more and will provide more information as it becomes available.

What surfaces are most likely to be sources of contamination?
Germs can be spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth. Droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person move through the air. Germs can be spread when a person touches respiratory droplets from another person on a surface like a desk, for example, and then touches their own eyes, mouth or nose before washing their hands.

What can I do to protect myself from getting sick?
There is no vaccine available right now to protect against this new H1N1 virus. There are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza. Take these everyday steps to protect your health:

1 Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
2 Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
3 Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
4 Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
Stay home if you are sick for 7 days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. This is to keep from infecting others and spreading the virus further.

Other important actions that you can take are:

    a. Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures.
    b. Be prepared in case you get sick and need to stay home for a week or so; a supply of over-the-counter medicines, alcohol-based hand rubs, tissues and other related items might could be useful and help avoid the need to make trips out in public while you are sick and contagious.

What is the best way to keep from spreading the virus through coughing or sneezing?
If you are sick, limit your contact with other people as much as possible. Do not go to work or school if ill for 7 days or until your symptoms go away (whichever is longer). Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. Put your used tissue in the waste basket. Cover your cough or sneeze if you do not have a tissue. Then, clean your hands, and do so every time you cough or sneeze.

What is the best technique for washing my hands to avoid getting the flu?
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. Wash with soap and water or clean with alcohol-based hand cleaner. We recommend that when you wash your hands -- with soap and warm water -- that you wash for 15 to 20 seconds. When soap and water are not available, alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizers may be used. You can find them in most supermarkets and drugstores. If using gel, rub your hands until the gel is dry. The gel doesn't need water to work; the alcohol in it kills the germs on your hands.

What should I do if I get sick?

If you live in areas where swine influenza cases have been identified and become ill with influenza-like symptoms, including fever, body aches, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea, you may want to contact their health care provider, particularly if you are worried about your symptoms. Your health care provider will determine whether influenza testing or treatment is needed.

If you are sick, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people as much as possible to keep from spreading your illness to others.

If you become ill and experience any of the following warning signs, seek emergency medical care.

In children emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:

1 Fast breathing or trouble breathing
2 Bluish or gray skin color
    3 Not drinking enough fluids
4 Not waking up or not interacting
5 Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
6 Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
    7 Fever with a rash

In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:

1 Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
2 Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
    3 Sudden dizziness
    4 Confusion
    5 Severe or persistent vomiting

How long can influenza virus remain viable on objects (such as books and doorknobs)?

Studies have shown that influenza virus can survive on environmental surfaces and can infect a person for up to 2-8 hours after being deposited on the surface.

What kills influenza virus?
Influenza virus is destroyed by heat (167-212°F [75-100°C]). In addition, several chemical germicides, including chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, detergents (soap), iodophors (iodine-based antiseptics), and alcohols are effective against human influenza viruses if used in proper concentration for a sufficient length of time. For example, wipes or gels with alcohol in them can be used to clean hands. The gels should be rubbed into hands until they are dry.

How should waste disposal be handled to prevent the spread of influenza virus?
To prevent the spread of influenza virus, it is recommended that tissues and other disposable items used by an infected person be thrown in the trash. Additionally, persons should wash their hands with soap and water after touching used tissues and similar waste.

What household cleaning should be done to prevent the spread of influenza virus?
To prevent the spread of influenza virus it is important to keep surfaces (especially bedside tables, surfaces in the bathroom, kitchen counters and toys for children) clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant according to directions on the product label.

How should linens, eating utensils and dishes of persons infected with influenza virus be handled?

Linens, eating utensils, and dishes belonging to those who are sick do not need to be cleaned separately, but importantly these items should not be shared without washing thoroughly first.

Linens (such as bed sheets and towels) should be washed by using household laundry soap and tumbled dry on a hot setting. Individuals should avoid “hugging” laundry prior to washing it to prevent contaminating themselves. Individuals should wash their hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub immediately after handling dirty laundry.

Eating utensils should be washed either in a dishwasher or by hand with water and soap.

Illegal Immigration should be stopped, the premise of the swine flu being a rationale is ambivalent to the matter. It only adds to the many lists of reasons for the halting of illegal immigration.

Illegal immigration is a crime, a violation of United States territorial jurisdiction, and a violation of the immigration laws that were prescribed, voted, and promulgated into Law by the United States House of Congress and by the United States Senate.

Now since these members of Congress were elected by the people, chosen from amongst the people to be the voice and will of the People.

The fact that these illegal immigrants are violating laws enacted by the Congress --is direct wanton violation of the Will of the People.

This country, this current administration is now trying to proliferate $300 BILLION of tax-payer money (hard earned, tax payer money) and give this for illegal immigrant welfare.

By this, we are only rewarding criminal acts. Illegal Immigration is a Criminal Act, by all accounts in the United States Constitution and Ammendments passed.

I have always been firm with the law, and the constitutional prerogative of these great United States of America.

Everytime I read Mike's poems, I start of eager to learn and understand every single word, but by mid-phrase, I always get confused and lost due to the shear amounts of deep Binisaya words that are beyond comprehension, for me.

Ah, I wish I knew more binisaya. The language is so sweet to hear and read.

Developing countries usually need to twirk up the police force. When I studied abroad in Ukraine in 2006, it was also obvious to me and other American students that the police were very corrupt.

If you get stopped for speeding, just give them 100 Grivna (20 dollars), then they'll let you go.

In conjunction with this thread,  a notable police force is the LAPD (USA), NYPD (USA) and the Victoria PD (Australia) due to their immediate response teams.

Lets hope this can be contained. But yea, make sure you guys check that your pork isn't being imported from foreign countries. Countries like Mexico.

In my analysis lang, it is evident that objective rationality does exist and it is indeed inherent in any society, civilization, and epoch.

The premise being, that the basic truths of right and wrong, abomination and accepted, all stem back to the truth that is transcendent from the Holy Spirit.

Though I didn't apply that, specifically, in my argument, as I wanted to stay away from religious persuasion, but more so on the philosophical aspect.

But in this re-view of the said analysis, I just wanted to share a personal rendition, that basic truths--that are consistent in Biblical Scripture, maintain and profess this view, that being-Objective Rationality.

Yes, Jan, its best to be careful nowadays. My friends and I, when we heard about this, put off eating pork for the next couple of weeks.

Its best to focus on preventatives. Take alot of Vitamin C, do all you can to bolster your immune system. Get enough sleep, eat healthy, eat citrus fruits, etc.

Lets look at the positive side of things pood.

Take care, ha.

Naa nay ang cases, Jan. Especially in high exposure areas, like airports, in malls, or in hospitals.

I have friends who are doing their rotations in Georgia and are being told to wear masks, due to the high amounts of Mexican patients, and possibility of swine flu spread.

the W.H.O stated that this will become pandemic.

Yup, thats why small pox and the plague didn't affect the Filipinos when the Spaniards came to the islands.

Filipinos were naturally protected, meaning the natives already had the antibodies, that and the fact that the weather was so hot, that germs didn't have time to spread.

Small pox did decimate the Native American tribes in North America, where the weather was cold.
#38541
What is concerning and alarming the health care system is that these are just the documented cases, there may be hundreds more of Mexican illegals who do not know that they have the flu nor wish to go to the hospital for fear of being deported, and as a result, are further exposing many other Americans to the flu.

In California alone, there is an unprecedented 10 million undocumented mexican illegal immigrants.

Hundreds more cross the porous border with Mexico and the United States on a daily basis. Infected, and non-infected.

This is what we have feared would happen.

Now can you imagine if Terrorists unleash anthrax or some kind of germ warfare agent?
#38542
I just read the news, Glace, there were documented  141 swine flue infected in the United States, most of those were in the border states with Mexico.

per se, California, Arizona, New Mexico.

Most of the infected are Mexican illegal immigrants.

Make sure to immediately go to the Hospital if these symptoms manifest. The upper echelons in the medical stratosphere say that there will be inhibition of the viral spread come summer time, due to the pervasive heat.

I dont' know, it has  yet to come to that, we'll find out. In the meantime, its best to tell friends, families that have symptoms to go straight to the E.R. If caught early, can be assessed.

To my fellow Americans, and Filipino-Americans,

Remember why our forefathers fought the American Revolution, we fought the British because of violations on our human rights, misuse of our resources, and for taxation without representation.

This so called national bail out, which has surmounted to an unprecedented 3 Trillion Dollars, was pathetically created. It has been revealed that most of the policy makers didn't even read the bill prior to signing it into law.

Dear Americans, that is an example of taxation without representation!
Dear Americans, this bill calls for the use of $300 BILLION of Tax-payer money to be used for illegal immigrant welfare, where is the fairness in that, my fellow countrymen?
That is a violation of the Bill of Rights and the will of the people. When has our great nation abandoned reason for madness?

The appalling aggressive nature of government is almost unchallengable, where are our state' rights? The very violations the Federal Government is doing, are the same ones, the British were guilty of some 2.5 centuries ago.

A Citizen,
Lorenzo

With that said, I wanted to remind everyone that every great republic in history, eventually hit a period of expanse and domestic and international turmoil, that led to the revolutionaary change of that republic into something totally different. An Empire.

Rome, for example, existed as a democratically elected republic for over 500 years. Then domestic and international pressure led to the change of that republic. They traded their freedoms for 'security'.

The Republic was extinguished for the Principate. The Empire.

Is the American Republic in the verge of transitioning into an Empire?

With that said,

check this video. I think it epitomizes the melting pot nature of Filipino culture.

;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6doq7t30bAU
#38572
With that said, the reason why I find beauty in the Filipino beauty is because Filipinos come from in different sizes, color, facial phenotype, and racial flavors. If you're into Spanish-Latin-looking Filipinos they are found, if you're into Chinese-looking Filipino beauties they can be found. If you adore the pure Malay-Filipino beauties they can be found as well.

Thats the beauty of Filipino identity. There's no one group. Filipinos are a stratified byproduct of thousands of years of racial and ethnic intermingling.

First we have the austronesian Aborigines (Aeta), then the waves of Malays, then the Indian traders, Arab traders, then the Chinese traders, then the Spaniards, the Americans, the Japanese. All in one.

The product, is Filipino.

Its where Europe and Asia combine as One.
Unique.
#38573
If we look at the national heroes of the Philippines, we see an evolutionary change and outlook.

During the age of heightened Spanish influence (mid-late 19th century) the Filipino intelligentsia were nominally Spanish-Filipino mestizos or wealthy Filipino Indio families and the hybrid of Indio-Chinese-Spanish families.

An example: Marcelo Del Pilar, a prominent statesman and writer-activist who claims Spanish and Filipino Indio lineage. He grew up in the philippines, but found his home in Spain, working and collaborating with Filipino rights sympathizers in the Royal Cortes (Spanish Parliament).

Another is Andres Bonifacio. The man is credited with the founding of the KKK (Katipunan), however Andres was also a Spanish Mestizo.

Another, the most famous, is Dr. Jose P. Rizal. Who is credited to have awakened the Filipinoismo Manifesto with his works El Filibusterismo and Noli Mi Tangere. He was supported by the Katipunan and his works were greatly recieved in France, Germany, Flanders, Britain, the Americas and even in Spain. Rizal was a mestizo of Chinese, Indio and Spanish lineage.

---

In the modern age, our heroes come from all racial and ethnic backgrounds. Sure there are some who hold semblance to colonial mentality, but the notion of mestizo superiority has been greatly repudiated. Manny Pacquiao, for example is of pure Filipino Malay, but he has defeated Spanish speaking fighters time and time again. He is even known and regarded by Latin Americans as 'The Bane of Latinos'

Just my view.
#38574
It depends, ethnically and racially, sure they may be observable. With distinct Spanish-looking facial phenotype. But now a days, Filipino is Filipino.

Gone are the days of racial divide and classed society where the Spanish peninsulare is in the top of the pyramid, the Mestizo in the middle and the Indio in the bottom, and the Chinese below the Indio.

Nowadays, many native Filipinos have improved their social standing and have proven that education and innate intellect is higher than social caste. Look at the Chinese-Filipinos, their ancestral forebears were looked down with contempt by the Spaniards as 'untrustworthy', but now, Chinese-Filipinos are the rich and wealthy elite of the Philippines.

May 02, 2009, 12:22:52 AM
by: Percy Blysshe Shelley

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncxR5JKLVA8

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Poems and Poets / Mutability
May 02, 2009, 12:16:08 AM
by: Percy Bysshe Shelley

We are the clouds that veil the midnight moon;
How restlessly they speed, and gleam, and quiver,
Streaking the darkness radiantly!--yet soon
Night closes round, and they are lost forever:

Or like forgotten lyres, whose dissonant strings
Give various response to each varying blast,
To whose frail frame no second motion brings
One mood or modulation like the last.

We rest.--A dream has power to poison sleep;
     We rise.--One wandering thought pollutes the day;
We feel, conceive or reason, laugh or weep;
Embrace fond foe, or cast our cares away:

It is the same!--For, be it joy or sorrow,
The path of its departure still is free:
Man's yesterday may ne'er be like his morrow;
     Nought may endure but Mutability.
