The Holy Bible. It is the Word of Lord. When I sit and read scripture, it is as if I am talking and discussing not with a man, or individual, but the Holy Spirit. When I am troubled, it provides confidence and perseverance, when my faith is questioning, it corrects and reinforces. When I am happy, it Justifies. It is the Word of the Lord.

In Jesus' Name.
Amen.

1Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

2Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;

3That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

4And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

5Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;

6Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.

-Ephesians 6:1-6

GIDEON, not only because it forms part of my first name but I am also the kind of guy who likes it when the odds are against me...

Gideon, is also very lucky to have been answered concretely by the Lord Our God.

He tested the faith, and The Lord Answered:

36Then Gideon said to God, "You say that you have decided to use me to rescue Israel. 37Well, I am putting some wool on the ground where we thresh the wheat. If in the morning there is dew only on the wool but not on the ground, then I will know that you are going to use me to rescue Israel." 38That is exactly what happened. When Gideon got up early the next morning, he squeezed the wool and wrung enough dew out of it to fill a bowl with water. 39Then Gideon said to God, "Don't be angry with me; let me speak just once more. Please let me make one more test with the wool. This time let the wool be dry, and the ground be wet." 40 That night God did that very thing. The next morning the wool was dry, but the ground was wet with dew.
Judges 6:36-40

God chose Gideon, to remind the people of Israel from worshiping foreign idols such as idols of Belezebub, Baal, Ashera, etc. Reaffirmed the faith. And faithfulness of the Lord. That His people, O Israel, were to worship only The Lord. For there are no other but Him. And the Lord Our God is a jealous God.

With his mighty hand, he smote the cities of Sodom and Gamorrah into oblivion for their sexual perversity and blasphemies, with righteous hand, he annihilated the armies of Assyria that threatened Judea.

And with His Outstretched Hand, he punished Egypt, and swallowed Pharaoh's armies by the waters of the Red Sea.

Mighty and Holy is Our God!
To Him, belong all Glory, Honor and Praise!

St. John The Baptist
The Final Prophet of God.

Blessed John the Baptist was the last and final prophet of the Lord Our God.
His ministry in the Jordan, preaching and baptizing in water and fortelling of the salvation of the Lord completed the message by earlier contemporary, Isaiah.

The Prophet Isaiah said:

"The prophet Isaiah had reminded the people to be prepared to receive the Messiah:
Prepare a road for the Lord through the wilderness,
clear a highway across the desert for our God
Every valley shall be lifted up,
every mountain and hill brought down;
the rugged place shall be made smooth
and mountain ranges become a plain."

(Isaiah 40:3-4)

This was also the message of John the Baptist. He was the voice in the wilderness exhorting the people to be ready, to prepare themselves morally and spiritually to receive the Messiah, who is Christ Jesus.

1  The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;
2As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
3The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
4John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
5And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
6And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;
7And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

8I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
9And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.
10And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:
11And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Mark 1: 1-8

The Prophet Moses

As the chosen messenger of the Almighty in the old days, by Grace of The Almighty, Moses led the Israelites from bondage in Egypt to the promised land (tho Moses never lived to see the Promise Land)

Moses was raised as a family of Pharaoh, brought as a noble Egyptian, but gave up nobility and riches of a pagan life, to be the voice of the Most High. A messenger to His people, O Israel.

And when she could hide him no longer she took for him a basket made of bulrushes, and daubed it with bitumen and pitch; and she put the child in it and placed it among the reeds at the river's brink. And his sister stood at a distance, to know what would be done to him. Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, and her maidens walked beside the river; she saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid to fetch it. When she opened it she saw the child; and lo, the babe was crying. She took pity on him and said, "This is one of the Hebrews' children. ... And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son; and she named him Moses, for she said, "Because I drew him out of the water."

A show case of the effectiveness of a total point defense.

I play as Macedon (Black) and the opponent plays as Carthage (white).

Total Point Defense can easily annihilate a heavy full frontal assault.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwY2rCyH_ac&feature=channel_page

;)

The Strategy
This is a classic Alexandrian defense:

When Alexander the Great went to war with the Persian Empire, Darius the Great--the Emperor of the Persian Empire, amassed a mighty force to hammer the Greco-Macedonian army led by Alexander into total submission.

But Alexander utilized a Total Point Defense, which broke the Persian Army's back. Leading to a total victory for Alexander. I tried to exert the same tactic that Alexander himself used in the Battle of Gilgamesh.

The strategy is:
1) Place the defensive infantry in a reverse V formation. Infantry units in the front, and infantry line in the diagonal to secure both right and left franks (an excellent tactic to assess cavalry or flank attacks)

2) Place artillery units behind the infantry defense; space it out--reason: to properly exudate firepower and suppression fire on enemy units.
-Burn tactic; attrition damage will be heightened.

3) Employ Archers. Ranged units. Archers are excellent in decimating a slow-moving heavy infantry; as well as perfect for instigating panick on enemy elephants and cavalry.
-If enemy closes in, remove archers from field of battle and place them behind the defense infantry. Continue firing behind the infantry.

The point and strategy is to exert fire power of artillery, and archers on a constant basis. The point is to decrease enemy number; to smash the enemy army's will to push forward.
-With a weakened enemy; the last defense--the infantry phalanx can finish the job.

In case of a large enemy army, continue fire power and secure weak chains on the defense.

Alexandrian Total Defense:
Purest form of Attrition War.

This strategy was used by Alexander, Ptolemy, Marcus Aurelius, Napoleon, Rommel, and McClellen.

Tierra adorada
Hija del sol de Oriente

Patria de amores!
Del heroismo cuna,

No te hallaran jamas.

En tu azul cielo, en tus auras,
En tus montes y en tu mar
Esplende y late el poema
De tu amada libertad.

Tu pabellon, que en las lides

Tierra de dichas, del sol y amores,

speaking of naval warfare material, can you  believe that the flagship of the philippine navy (RPS kalantiaw) back in the late 70s or early 80s was sunk not through a fierce naval battle but by bad weather?

Bolingitboy, during the 1960s', the Philippine Navy was the envy of the region, although most of its naval ships were mostly WWII American-donations, it still boasted destroyers, frigates, and a fleet of patrol ships. The navy was the inspiration of the newly independent South East Asian nations of the day. Indonesia, actually, in 1961 signed a joint-protection treaty with the Philippines as it needed the help of the Philippine Navy's mighty arm to suppress insurrectionist activity near the celebes.

Since 1960's, the Philippine Navy has largely remained stagnant. Most of the naval ships that the Philippines has are old ships that no other nation in the world would even commission due to sea-unworthiness. Most of the frigates in the Philippine Navy, like the one you mentioned, the RPS Datu Kalantiaw, have only been kept afloat by constant repair by the Philippine Navy.

These ships steam at 15-20 knotts, which are slow in international standards, and have no missile protection or air protection besides cannons. What are cannons going to do to a ship cruising at 30 knotts and carrying anti-ship missiles?

The Philippines did acquire 2 peacock-class frigates, some fast attack ships, but mostly the acquisition of the Cyclone-Class missiple patrol boat from the United States has finally provided the Philippine Navy with a missile umbrella, so to say.

These 3 new ships are the basis for the future development of the Navy. Focusing more on internal security and territorial security than external projections.

#38321
The Philippines' BRP General Mariano Alvarez , is the newly acquired Cyclone-class missile patrol boat. This is a 4th generation patrol ship, which was developed by the United States Navy as a way to outmaneuver and ouspeed any foreign frigate.

The defense capabilities of the BRP General Mariano Alvarez include:
1 × MK 96 autocannon
1 × MK 38 25 mm autocannon
5 × .50 caliber machine guns
2 × MK 19 40 mm automatic grenade launchers
2 × M60 machine guns
ARM launch pods
(possible EXOCET anti-ship missile upgrades)
The Sperry Vision 2100M combat system employs the navigational radars and the Sperry Voyage Management System integrated navigation and control system as a combat data suite. Ammunition supply includes 2,000 rounds 25-mm, 2,000 rounds .50 cal, 2,000 rounds 7.62-mm, and 1,000 40-mm grenades. Plans to fit Hellfire missiles possible.

Speed  BRP General Mariano Alvarez:
35 knots (full steam) -- which is very fast

Propulsion
Four Paxman diesels; four shafts; 3,350 shaft horsepower (2.50 MW)

Crew:

Four officers, 24 enlisted personnel

Overall, this ship carries a lethal punch. A 4th generational missile-class ship that the United States Navy personally uses on the Gulf as an excellent anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, and anti-ship force. Overall, the Cyclone-class provides a much needed missile defense for the modernizing Philippine Navy.

BRP General Mariano Alvarez (PS-38)

PS-38's harpoon guns. Can knock out even an air-to-ship missile threat. Meaning any Migfighters or missiles that pose a threat can be shot from the air.

PS-38 on full steam.
Beautiful ship. The pride of the Philippine Navy.

Yea this thread is pretty innaccurate.

I just did a research on this, as well as talked to 3 of my medical professors as well as mentioned this topic to 5 other medical students.

Chicken, in actuality, is the healthier type of meat anyone could eat. By far, biochemically and nutritionally speaking, less fat than say beef, pork. It is recommended by nutritionist that chicken or fish be frequented rather than the former beef or pork.

As for chicken wings being being tampered; if you're going to make that excuse, then might as well as stop eating beef, pork, turkey, lamb etc. All kinds of meat will be processed--if you're living in developing or developed countries.

The response from Dr. Sai, my general pathology professor: "Chicken is healthy for you, chicken wings as well. There are more teratogens out there that are numerically more dangerous to a person than worrying about chicken wings."

Today was such a long day, def. Didn't come back home till 10pm my time. Been awak since 8am nonstop. Thank goodness its a Friday. Today was pretty awesome, we got to see --well i personally got to see drug interaction.

The attending gave me a patient situation--we had one patient whoshowing signs and symptoms of Tuberculosis at the same time he was also taking Melformin as treatment for diabetic mellitus. The attending physician asked us, what should we do-??

He asked me and my partner what mode of action should we do?

Well it was very obvious. Looking at his charts, clearly he had TB, so we opted to advice he be treated with rifampin as treatment for possible Tuberculosis. What dose? What effect? He asked us.

We were aloof for a good 5 minutes--until I remembered that Rifampin is also an inducer of cytocrhome P450 isoenzyme; so if we give him rifampin, his cytochrome p450 enzymes will increase, and hence metabolize any melformin drug he's taking to treat his already diabetic condition.

What should we adjust?

Obvious na.

Patient suffering from diabetese mellitus, taking melformin as treatment; now pt is showing signs of tuberculosis, must be treated with rifampin, but dose of melformin has to be increased or doubled due to metabolism of melformin via increase of c-p450 isoenzymes.

Correct. Pharmacology for the day. I was happy, naka answer mi adto.

To see the attending writing our prescription recomendation and dosage was rewarding for us. :)

The cyclone-class ship along with the 2 peacock class frigates that the Philippines acquired from the British Navy in 1997 have been the basis for the modernizing Philippine Navy.

The Philippine's cyclone-class ship has ability to shoot down enemy/hostile planes and missiles via its ARM defense, as well as phalanx anti-air guns.
One of the possible upgrades the Cyclone-class ship has, which will be beneficial for the Philippine Navy, is EXOCET anti-ship missiles. If the Philippine navy upgrades its cyclone-class ship with 5-10 exocet missiles, it will have the ability to sink even a much larger frigate and destroyer class.

An excellent defensive arm. The Philippine Navy has plans in acquiring 2-3 more Cyclone-class missile ships from the United States, which will overall strengthen the power and capability of the Philippine Navy.

It will make the PN's ability to track, isolate, and neutralize foreign pirates, smugglers etc easier.

#38328
It is unfortunate, but most of the ships in the Philippine Navy are cannon-class ships. Of vintage WWII era.

Since 2004, the United States and the Philippines have worked together to step up to the need to patrol and enforce the vast waterways of the Philippines.

In 2004, the USN donated a missile-patrol ship to the Philippines, a Cyclone-class ship.

The new missile patrol ship has been effective in the Philippine's ability to fight piracy, as well as uphold Philippine naval territorial right.

Some pictures:

Do what you have to do, according to your conscience, in knowledge that The Lord Jesus Christ hears, sees, and knows all.

I don't believe in doing things or saying things for the sake of name. For what is a name? We are dust, and to dust shall we all return.

Don't do things, or don't say things for merely the sake of gaining a following. Do what you have to do, say what you have to, and live according to the lessons we have been taught, message we have been given. And that is through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

No matter what people say or thing, it is the LORD who, ultimately, knows. the final judge.

Do what you have to because you Love Christ. And because He loves you.

Raquel, I remember you shared before that you read medical books and memorize the lessons, and now you share that you like watching ER shows, as well as other Health Care shows.

Have you ever thought about pursuing a medical career, Ma'am Raquel? Ever thought about going to school for nursing or medicine?

It is very possible.

I have a classmate, who is a 2nd year med student with me; he graduated college in 1983 in business, worked and got his CPA certificate. He worked as an accountant for years, and went back to nursing school. Worked as a nurse for some time, and loved it. He then went back to school to take required courses for medical school.

He is a smart individual. And now he is here, in our class. He is one of the smart ones in our batch, to be honest. He memorizes what the professor says in a 2 hour lecture.

The Lord knows we need more doctors and nurses here in the 'States. Right now, the US will be in need of over 100,000 nurses.

In medical research as well as in papers by the New England Journal of Medicine, there are medical scientists that are researching on reanimating brain dead individuals.

Through selective Pluripotent hematopietic stem cells, some researchers were able to renaminate a brain-dead rat, which had no electric activity in its brain. Through stem cell experiment, the said rat's brain was reanimated. The rat, which was comatose for some time, was able to walk, eat, defecate again.

Given, this is just a clinical trial on rats, the fact is that it can be applied for humans, after clinical trials and passing health tests, of course.

The advance of medicine is incredible.

This is a great article, Mike.

The role of HDAC inhibitors is that it blocks acetylase enzymes, which allow the hyperacetylation of histones.

With this, it leads to gene expression. Meaning, the genes that encode myelin sheath formation, which coats the neuron and allows neurotransmitter signals to travel in affero-effero pathways.

3 countries that I'd love to visit in Europe:

a) Germany--a beautiful and rich history; am personally in love with Prussian history, id love to visit Berlin, Munich, Saxony, and of course Heidelberg University.

b) Spain--Id love to visit Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia and Andalucia region, as well as visit overseas Spanish territories like the Canaries.

c) France--To visit Normandy, Calais, Paris, and Bordeaux region. French red wine, French culture, to visit the Arch, Versailles, etc.

Ma'am Raquel, you have great tastes in shows ;)

Right now I love watching Dr. G: Medical Examiner, and some Discovery Health channels. I try to follow only the ones that are showing whenever i get back home from class lol!
Why? its neat because the things we learn in class, and during hospital rounds--being applied and mentioned in health shows--makes me smile.

Being able to identify and recognize a terminology that the 1st or 2nd year residents use makes me and some of my study buddies smile. Well it makes us laugh, lol.

Everything connects.

I also like watching History Channel shows; some shows that I like are River Monsters.

Julius Caesar;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PeN1k9AAMg

- Soldiers! Pompey and the Senate have formally declared that Gaius Julius Caesar is an enemy of Rome.

- No!

- They have declared that I am a criminal. They have declared, in effect, that all of you also are criminals!

- No!

- The tribune's veto was not exercised. Peoples
tribune Mark Antony and 50 men of the 13th were assaulted by 1000 head of Pompeian scum.

- No !

- A tribune of the plebs assaulted on the steps of the Senate house! Can you imagine a more terrible sacrilege? Our beloved Republic is in the hands of madmen. This is a dark day, and I stand at a fork in the road. I can abide the law and surrender my arms to the Senate - and watch the Republic fall to tyranny and chaos. Or, I can go home with my sword in hand and run those maniacs to the Tarpean Rock!

- Yeah ! Yeah !

- Legionary Titus Pullo, step forward! Titus Pullo! ... When 50 brave men of the 13th fought Pompey's 1000 in the forum and saved the tribune, it was legionary Titus Pullo who drew first blood! Here is 500 denarii!

- Very grateful, sir.

- Are you with me, Titus Pullo? Will you come with me to Rome?

- Yes. Yes, sir! Certainly!

- Titus Pullo is with me! And you? Are you with me?

- Yeah! Yeah!

Today was a great day, actually. Had class, began our orientation for 2nd year.

So far, I really like Gen. Pathology, Pharmacology and Microbiology & Immunology. Our professor for Gen. Path not only is a clinical practictioner but also is a medical researcher. His methodology of explaining the subject matter is so vivid, and easy to digest.

My classmates and I were so excited to having him teach this semester. Let alone for next semester, haha. Lipay ko kaayo kai we are set.

Today was also a good day, gave a talk to some 1st years. I saw the expression of the 1st termers' faces in seeing their first cadavers. It reminded us of how we reacted last year.

I had to TA for anat lab today, our anatomy director joked, "Look how this year's class are adapting." Considering how we had individuals faint in our anat lab last year. The 3rd years and some of us 2nd year TAs couldnt help but smile.

Back to work.

Addendum:

There are actually 2 USS Kidds.

The first USS Kidd is of the older generation, of the Fletcher-class, which is a WWII generation destroyer. That older version was mothballed out of service.

The newer USS Kidd is part of the Arleigh Burke Aegis Destroyer-Class. A 4th generation US destroyer. With capability to steam through the pacific within mere days. Its a nuclear-powered ship, energy efficient, and can transport humanitarian aid as well as deploy military units within a day's reach from the US Pacific and Atlantic Command.

The same ship was sent to Indonesia to rebuild and help recover bodies in Indonesia after the Tsunami 2004. As well as sent over $50 Billion worth in food and medical supplies that the United States Government supplied Indonesia, India, Thailand and Bangladesh.

Again, to correct the misinterpretations of some. The US Navy has always been for reconstructive means, and nation building, let alone solidifies the US's championing of humanitarian causes through its channels.

The same in Basilan and Sulu.

God Bless the United States and the Philippines!

With that said, I don't think Bohol or the Philippines for that matter is restricted to this situation. In any modernizing third world nation, their police force will have limited capabilities as compared to modern industrialized nations per se like Germany, the UK, France, Switzerland, The United States, Canada etc.

If we look at the police forces and their accomplishments/limitations in South & Central America, In South East Asia, in South Asia, in the Middle East etc, its quite obvious that corruption, and funding is going to be an issue (limited funding).

For a country like the Philippines, with a population that is to hit 97.5 Million (CIA world factbook source), and with the limited man power it has serving in the Philippine Police and paramilitary unit, considering the funding issue, considering the red tape issue, its only inevetible that there will be some 'instances' of sub par capability as compared to nations that have an established police force, with a fairly well-funded police force, well equipped, etc.

If we had to compare the Philippines' police force, it would only be fair to compare it with other developing nations.

To compare it with nations within the top echelon in terms of development (like EU nations, USA, Canada, Japan) would be unfair.

Totally different class, in terms of development and funding.

Platito no it it is not directed for any one police force at all.

Watching the world news and seeing how other police are sometimes performing they're works is often more sad then it is good.

Lorenzo fast and prompt acting is absolutely correct. By the way beautiful photography thanks for posting. :)

Kiris sorry sorry that was suppose to be "Translation".

Sure, Priscilla. You working in Bohol gives a greater view and aspect. Considering you did live in the USA for quite some time, and observe the police force in Bohol and in Cebu, I would give more weight to one who has seen different police forces.

Given, I admit, there are some things that the police here in the 'states could address, but overall, its a model.

Am sure, Bohol's police force has some successes, and some challenges. All the more to progress on what is on the ground.

Its a matter of 'twirking' some loose notches. :)

Let's proceed, shall we.

I ask this to everyone, what is the biblical and church doctrine in regards to the laying of ashes on the forehead in Ash Wednesday? Give scriptural reference for the act, historical premise etc.

The answer to this question requires one to read Old Testament. It's a beautiful search, imho. To God Be The Glory!

Job's contemporaries would have immediately recognized the meaning of some of his behaviors that seem strange to us today: tearing his cloak, shaving of his hair, prostrating himself on the ground, siting amidst ashes (read Job 1:20-21; 2:8 ).
Many ancient cultures interpreted all these actions as gestures of mourning. They were an exterior form of expression for an interior grief.

Sometimes the mourning ritual reflected sorrow over personal loss, as it did at first in Job's case. He had just received terrible news about several calamities, including the sudden death of all his children (Read Job 1: 13-19).

At other times, these were gestures of remorse--that is, of sorrow over sin. In this case, the wearing of sackcloth and ashes in particular became a common ritual of penance before God and petition for his forgiveness and help (read Daniel 9:3). job later used ashes in this way as awell, when he felt sorrow for questioning God and decided to "Repent In Dust and Ashes" (Job 42:6)

Catholics, Anglicans, Orthodox, Coptic Christians and older churches maintain this practice because the ash symbolizes 'dirtiness'. They humble us by reminding us that however proud we may be of ourselves, our accomplishments, and our professions, n the end (as the words of the Ash Wednesday rite recall), we are dirty, and to dirt we shall return (Read Genesis 3:19). At the same time, having dirty faces reminds us that sin stain us, and we need to be cleansed of it through God's Grace.
(please read Psalm 51;3-5, 9, 11-12)

It reminds us that though how sinful we are, while we were yet sinners, Christ Jesus came and died for our sins.

It is the beauty, and magnanimity of Our Lord God. :)

Can you believe, that while we were yet sinners, HE died for our sins.

That, my friends, is awesome Love. A Father's Love.

God Bless~
