i don't know how true the stories are, but it is said that the sto. nino image in the procession for the christ child's feast day is not the original one.  that's believable, and understandable considering the risk that's expected in such a public exposure to a massive crowd.

the one at the altar (as shown in lorenz's posts) is purportedly isn't also the original one.  the original one is too historic, too priceless as a piece of art, aside from its sacredness, that it had to be hidden safely in parts unknown.  this i find hard to believe, though i would still tend to understand.  the original, be it hidden or the one that we see, is a piece of art that's irreplaceable.  (whether we venerate the original or its copy won't make any difference in our faith and sincerity anyway.)

so far, the one that's venerated at the basilica's side altar is said to be protected by bulletproof glass.  and so far, i haven't heard of attempts to steal the image, unlike those hapless images at the baclayon church.

this looks like publicity at all cost, no different from any bad news is good news.  these unknown artists are now in the papers because they managed to shock the public.  they got the publicity, didn't they?

what, indeed, is the art in showing a penis on christ's forehead?  here's one more proof that sometimes perverts pass themselves off as artists.  if only i knew anyone of them, even remotely, so i can tell him that his group should go further in their expression by displaying themselves, asses up and bare, with a stone penis in their openings.  call it performance art.

Afterwards, wala na yamo ilang ulo. :)

i wish the same can be applied where we are, though it may sound barbaric.  (well, the death penalty in the u.s. seems barbaric to europeans.  what we aren't used to we tend to relegate to backwardness.)

it looks like some insecure artists couldn't tell what is art and what is merely shocking, what is expression and the responsibility that it carries.  heaven help us if those crush video producers call on freedom of expression.  it's their art form, and who are the rest of humanity to tell them otherwise?  they're just exercising their freedom.  bull...!

WHAT IS A DOG?

(According to a woman)

Dogs lie around all day, sprawled on the most comfortable piece of furniture in the house.
They can hear a package of food opening half a block away, but they don't hear you when you are in the same room.
They growl when they are not happy.
When you want to play, they want to play.
When you want to be alone, they want to play.
They are great at begging.
They will love you forever if you rub their tummies.
They leave their toys everywhere.
They do disgusting things with their mouths and then try to give you a kiss.
CONCLUSION: They are little men in fur coats.

WHAT IS A CAT?

(According to a man)

Cats do what they want.
They rarely listen to you.
They are totally unpredictable.
When you want to play, they want to be alone.
When you want to be alone, they want to play.
They expect you to cater to their every whim.
They are moody.
They leave hair everywhere.
They drive you nuts and cost an arm and a leg.
CONCLUSION: They are tiny women in fur coats.

I have no idea why women prefer cats.  I think it’s because cats purr.  Other than that, cats have practically the same qualities as menâ€"qualities that women loath with their entire being.

Cats stay out late at night and never tell you where they’ve been, they never come when called (unless it pertains to food), and they’re always spitting up globs of gunk that shouldn’t have been able to survive in their digestive system in the first place.

Cats leave hairs all over the place, they bring dead animals home and expect you to be impressed, they disappear whenever work needs to be done, and they take for granted that you’ll clean up their poop because heaven knows they won’t do it themselves.

Women would never marry cats because that’s stupid.  Besides, how would a cat support a family?  On dead birds?  I think not!

I believe men prefer dogs over cats because dogs behave exactly the way a man wishes his woman would behave but never will because women are smarter than that.

Dogs will fetch without complaining, they come when they’re called, they don’t mind rolling over to have their tummies scratched, and they’re always happy to wag a bit of tail.  They don’t need extra time to “put on their face,” they never grumble about how much football you watch, you can train them to do just about anything, and they don’t care if Debbie Howard’s husband makes more money than you.

Dogs have a one-track mind.  They want to please.  Women, on the other hand, are complex creatures that want to please up to a pointâ€"and if you don’t take out the trash, change the light bulbs, mow the yard, paint the house, fix the leaky faucet, and take her out for a night of fine dining (after you’ve washed up, of course), you’ll never get to that point.

Men would marry dogs if they could, but I think it’s illegal.

in the 1980s, he attended a one-year training in manila.  with his adventurous spirit and good looks, he thought of spending his vacant time fruitfully.  he tried his hand at movie acting.

gihimo siyang extra, as a street pickpocket nga nadakpan in a movie starring chanda romero.  kapila ang takes, kapila siya modagan sa street, kapila sad siya sagpaa ni chanda romero.  result: gi-edit out pa gyod siya.  di gyod siya makit-an bisan unsaon pag teleskopyo adtong sineha.

moral lesson:  kuyaw ning di ta katulog tungod ug artista. ;D

islander's preference:  none, honest.  i dare not choose one pet over the other.  i must admit though that i have better communication with dogs than with cats.  i grew up always having a dog of my own.  a lifetime of having pets gave me the sense that we can anticipate each other's thoughts.

a space for pets is my only issue.  if i could, i would have an elephant and a camel.

in an average-sized room, i can put 23 cats all together.  i cannot do that with dogs.  thus i can take in a good number of cats but i have to put my foot down with dogs who need more space and have to be walked at least once a day.
#38240
this sounds like a good offshoot of "men are from mars, women are from venus"...

question:  Why do women like cats for pets more than men do?

chosen as the best answer in http://answers.yahoo.com/, as written by michaelfan58:

Cats are independent, and men want an animal that they can call and it will come running to them. You see, Cats Rule and Dogs Drool.  It's just that simple.

Now, my son, a U.S. Marine, likes cats.  However, he will hold his cat even when she has indicated she wants to be put down.  He also holds her like a baby and ALL cats HATE that.  But, my son loves his cat and the softness of her fur belly.  He doesn't pick her up a lot, so it isn't like he tortures her.  But he doesn't like all that slobbery slobber that dogs drool all over you, or being licked in the face with that slobbery slobber.  YUCK!

Cats really are more elegant and refined, but they need us to help them because over centuries they have become more domesticated.

So, women are NOT the only cat lovers around, but I agree that most men prefer dogs.  If it's because most women are like cats then it must also be that most men are like dogs. ;) Think about it because, in a married household the woman usually is the boss.  In a GOOD marriage anyway.

51 years life experience, had cats all my life, currently own three cats.

CONCLUDING OBSERVATIONS

There are cases that at the opening of a sealed tomb, some people have been affected by illness and infection.  This may be the result of poisonous moulds and bacteria in the tomb.  Poisonous gases have also been known to cause illness to archeologists.

In the 1940's, when an archeologist, Sami Gabra, was working in tombs in the ibis-necropolis of Tuna el-Gebel, both he and his workers were seized by violent headaches and shortness of breath.  The workers thought it was a curse of the ibis-headed god, Thoth.  In reality, it was discovered that the cause was noxious gas, and after it was removed, they returned to work.

An Interesting Note:  The curses were directed at tomb robbers and those who sought to despoil the tomb.  It may be that since Egyptologists make the name of the dead live by their discoveries and publications, (and therefore the soul), they would not be punished but actually be blessed by the ancients.

CURSES FROM PRIVATE TOMBS

As mentioned above, there were no curses found in the tomb of Tutankhaumum, but genuine curses have been found in other tombs.  Most royal tombs did not have curses but curses have been found at private tombs.  They usually appear in tombs of the Old Kingdom.  They basically consist of the owner of the tomb invoking judgment in the underworld on any tomb violators.  Here are some examples of tomb curses found on private tombs in the Old Kingdom period.

"As for any man who will make a disturbance, I shall be judged with him."

"A  crocodile be against him in the water;  a snake be against him on land,  he who would do anything against this tomb.  Never did  I do a thing against him.  It is the god who will judge."

Here is an interesting curse from the tomb of Ankhmahor from Saqqara (Old Kingdom period).

"As for anything that you might do against this tomb of mine of the West, the like shall be done against your property.  I am an excellent lector priest, exceeding knowledgeable in secret spells and all magic.  As for any person who will enter into this tomb of mine in their impurity, having eaten the abominations that excellent akh-spirits abominate, or who do not purify themselves as they should purify themselves for an excellent akh who does what his lord praises, I shall seize him like a goose (wring his neck), placing fear in him at seeing ghosts upon earth, that they might be fearful of an excellent akh... But as for anyone who will enter into this tomb of mine being pure and peaceful regarding it, I shall be his protective backer in the West in the court of the great god."

Some more unusual curses are the "Donkey Curse" which threaten the violator of the tomb with rape by a donkey, the animal of Seth.

A most complete curse comes from the administrator of the 18th dynasty, Amenhotep, son of Hapu.  He threatens anyone who would damage his tomb with a lengthy list of punishments.  They would "lose their earthly positions and honors, be incinerated in a furnace in execration rites, capsize and drown at sea, have no successors, receive no tomb or funerary offerings of their own, and their bodies would decay because they will stave without sustenance and their bones will perish".  This curse does not leave much out.

THE FLIGHT OF THE BRITANNIA

In 1972 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of King Tut's tomb, some of the treasures from the tomb were sent to select museums in other countries for display.  Some of the treasures were sent to England in crates aboard a Royal Air Force Britannia aircraft.  A technical officer thought it would be funny to kick the crate which contained King Tut's Royal Mask.  Two years latter, he broke that same leg.  Another crew member got a divorce some time afterwards and blamed the curse.  Two other members had heart attacks and they believed it was caused by the curse.  This story was reported in September, 1978 in the "News of the World" newspaper.

THE STORY OF THE MUMMY ON THE TITANIC

There is an interesting story regarding the prestigious British Museum.  They had been reputed to own a mummy which had a curse on it.  They decided to get rid of it so they arranged to sell it to an American Institution.  They arranged for it to be shipped to America on the Titanic.  We know what happened and today many people think the Titanic sank because of the presence of the mummy on board.

Actually, this story was completely made up and the only truth in it is that the alleged mummy is actually a coffin lid, which is still present to this day in the British Museum.

Lord Carnavon was in poor health for many years before he arrived in Egypt and entered the tomb.  A mosquito bite that he received had become infected and because of his ill health led to pneumonia and he died from this.  The occurrence of the lights going out in Cairo was also reported but this was a common occurrence, even today, in Cairo.   The newspapers published the text of the alleged curse: "Death shall come on swift wings to him that toucheth the tomb of a pharaoh".  Actually, Tutankhamum's curse was a mistranslation of a protective spell inscribed on a magic brick from the tomb.  Four magic bricks were found in the tomb in niches at the cardinal directions to form a defensive perimeter and support.  There was never a curse that was found written in the tomb of Tutankhaumum.  The curse story was spread by uninformed news reporters and others who wanted to make a sensational story regarding Carnavon's death.

Lord Carnarvon (George Herbert, Earl of Carnarvon)

What about the others that entered the tomb?  What happened to them if there was a curse?

At the opening of the tomb, 26 people were present.  Only 6 died within 10 years.   At the opening of the sarcophagus, there were 22 people present.  Only 2 died within 10 years.  At the unwrapping of the mummy, 10 people were present.  None died within 10 years.  In fact the Doctor who performed the autopsy on King Tut's mummy lived for another 20 years.  What about Howard Carter who was the first to enter the tomb in 1923.  He died 16 years later in 1939.

BUT it should be noted that genuine curses have been found in other tombs.

THE STORY OF THE CURSE OF KING TUT

The most famous story about a mummies curse occurred in 1923 when King Tutankhaumum's tomb was discovered by Howard Carter.  Today everyone has heard of the young boy King Tut and his treasures have toured the globe.  Many books have been published and many movies produced.  Carter's patron and sponsor of the excavation, Lord Carnarvon, had entered the tomb with Carter.  The tomb was virtually intact and had never been  broken into.  They were the first to enter since it was sealed in antiquity.  What happened several weeks afterwards was the following.  Lord Carnarvon got a mosquito bite that became infected and this led to pneumonia which he died from.  At the time of his death there was a complete black-out in Cairo and Carnavon's dog in far-off England started howling at that instant.  This story was spread all over the world and the interest in the "Curse of the Pharaohs" was rekindled.  Today, many people probably think there was a curse on the tomb of King Tutankhaumum and that most of the people who entered the tomb died strange deaths.  This is actually not true.  What are the facts?

Legends about the "Curse of the Pharaoh's" started around the 7th Century when the Arabs arrived in Egypt.  They could not read the hieroglyphics so many things seemed mysterious and strange to them.  Also the remarkable preservation of Mummies must have been a strange sight. Many stories were told.  They believed that if one entered a tomb and uttered a magical formula, they would be able to materialize objects made invisible by the ancient Egyptians.  Also,  by magic,  mummies could become alive again.  They also believed that the Egyptians would protect their tombs by magical means  (i.e. curses on anyone who entered).

what is a curse?  the simplest definition that i found is:  it is "An appeal or prayer for evil or misfortune to befall someone or something."  (Answers.com)

THE CURSE OF THE MUMMIES

One of the magic bricks found in King Tut's tomb.
Four of these magic bricks were found and each
inscribed with a portion of chapter 151
of the Book of the Dead.

Couple in 'crush' video industry to face court

By Dennis Carcamo
August 04, 2011

MANILA, Philippines - The couple nabbed for making "crush" videos by authorities are expected to face trial for the offense within the year, according to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Dorma Ridon and his husband Vicente have already been charged with violations of the Anti-Child Abuse Law and the Animal Welfare Act after they were arrested by the police and agents from the National Bureau of Investigation in Burgos, La Union on Tuesday.

The Ridons were reportedly producing a series of "crush" videos in which scantily clad young girls torture animals to death, according to PETA, which conducted a year-long probe along with the NBI.

The couple has posted bail.

"The vicious disregard for the animal suffering shown in these sadistic videos must be severely punished.  This is a warning to anyone who would commit cruelty-to-animals crimes.

The public takes it seriously and will do all it can to see justice served," PETA Asia's campaign manager Rochelle Regodon said.

"Crush" videos depict extreme cruelty to animals, subjecting them to torture such as setting them on fire or hitting them with sharp objects.

21. …When you want beer, you ask for San Miguel.  ‘Nuff said.

22. Medical tourism is becoming as big as regular tourism.  It’s not uncommon for people to come from halfway around the world to get faith healing, facial uplifting, liposuction or a new set of teeth.  Who needs a health care plan when you can pay out of pocket?

23. Everyone is either asleep or having lunch at 12 noon.  The siesta habit is one trait left behind by the Spanish.  Schedule all your transactions accordingly or suffer the consequences.

24. You learn that “Guest Relations Officer” is not a diplomatic post.  Though it’s easy to be confused by the sexy uniforms.

25. Socks with sandals.  Just don’t.

I am the balut man: Every American who comes here tries it eventually.

16. People expect you to be loud and obnoxious if you have an American accent.  I don’t fit the stereotype, apparently. Plus I took an “accent neutralization” seminar before moving here.  (It helps when you’re in the CIA.)

17. You learn to carry your own toilet paper everywhere you go.  For emergencies.  Just saying.

18. If you consent to take a “group photo” of strangers in front of a monument, you will suddenly have 20 cameras dangling from your wrist.  Not just Americans, but all foreigners walk right into this trap.  You think, “How hard can it be?  One group, one camera...”  Then you find yourself clicking away for 20 minutes, juggling camera straps like Bobo the Clown.

19. The “Jedi Mind Trick” sometimes works with cop pullovers.  Okay, it also helps to have pale skin and a “PRESS” sticker on your car.  But sometimes, when you’re pulled over for a minor traffic violation, it helps to just wave your hand and say: “You don’t need to take away my license… I’m free to go.”  If this fails, pedal to the metal also works.

20. US brands have become generic nouns here.  People brush with Colgate while watching MTVs after drinking Coke which they keep in the Frigidaire.  It’s like everybody’s a paid endorser of US brands.  But…

11. Driving is not a spectator sport.  Much like in gladiator days, it’s easier to sit back in a comfortable seat and watch the carnage while a driver whisks you from Point A to Point B, rather than get your tunic all bloody.  But where’s the fun in that?  Man up, get a driver’s license, and learn how it’s really done on the mean streets.

So traffic: Man up, get a driver’s license, and learn how it’s really
done on the mean streets of Manila.  AP

12. Patience is a virtue.  As more than one foreigner told me when I first moved to Manila, “If you didn’t have patience before living in the Philippines, you’ll definitely learn it here.” Not everything happens at lightning-quick speeds, but waiting with a smile sometimes pays off.

13. You learn to get around the word “No.”  It’s a favorite word of salespeople, along with “Wala” and “Out of stock.”  As a foreigner here, you must learn to distinguish “no” from “maybe,” and go about your business.

14. Everyone eventually tries balut.  It took me 14 years.  But I finally sent one down the hatch.  Urp…

15. You are not allowed to use “Filipino time” as an excuse.  Everybody else can be 30 minutes to an hour late for a dinner or event, but if you’re an American and you arrive late, people will openly mock you.

6. Karaoke is your friend, not your enemy.  After a stressful day/week in Manila, a few verses of Springsteen’s Born to Run or Radiohead’s Creep can be as comforting as a Quarter Pounder or a Whopper with Cheese.

7. You’ll never run out of natural beauty/beauties to explore.  Whether you’re kayaking in the limestone cliffs of Palawan or watching the Binibining Pilipinas contest, there’s plenty of eye candy.

8. You become addicted to cheap massages.  Let’s face it: a good rubdown can set you back $50 or more in the US.  Here it’s as inexpensive as a Happy Meal.

9. You find people are generally honest.  My father visited Manila in 1999, lost his “fanny pack” (containing his passport, driver’s license and other vital items) on a Quiapo kalesa ride.  The investigating police officer was very thorough, questioning everyone in the drivers’ area until he recovered the items.  Didn’t ask for a reward.  My dad was very impressed by the cop’s honesty.

10. You stop noticing coup attempts.  Like the ones during GMA’s reign.  My folks rang me up to inquire about my safety during the last one, but we were out at the mall, oblivious to the news about a tank crashing through the Peninsula Hotel.  Just another day in Manila.

25 truths about being an American in Manila

THE X-PAT FILES
By Scott R. Garceau
The Philippine Star, July 24, 2011

1. A lot of people assume you’re in the CIA.  This usually helps create mystique.  Don’t overdo it, though.

2. You occasionally crave foreign fast-food.  McDonald’s.  Starbucks.  KFC.  Pizza Hut.  Fortunately, they’re everywhere.  You don’t even get a chance to become homesick for American junk food.

3. A mall is always a stone’s throw away.  Same as with the fast food.  Knowing there’s a hardware store as big as an airplane hangar or a million other outlets for your gadget needs makes living in Manila a lot easier to deal with.

4. If you can’t think of something nice to say… it’s better to make stuff up.  If you really must turn down an invite to a huge merienda (an hour after you’ve finished lunch), think of some elaborate excuse â€" work, errands, some family member lying in the hospital â€" rather than simply admitting,  “Er… I really don’t think I could eat anything again until next Wednesday.”

5. You can’t own a gun.  And that’s a good thing.  But there’s always pepper spray.

paestoryaha na lang ko bisan ug ma-OT...

lahi ra ning inahana sa usa ka amahan nga akong nakasakay ug barko gikan sa leyte padung sa cebu niadtong 1980s.  tibuok gabii, wa gyod niya buhii ang bata nga bag-o pang gianak, wa pay usa ka semana.  he looked sad and introspective, all the while looking lovingly at the baby in his arms.  that scene had stayed with me ever since.

nakig-estorya ko kadugayan.  tricycle driver siya.  ang iyang baby way buslot ang lubot.  padung siya sa chong hua hospital sa cebu aron ipa-doctor.  wa kuno siyay kuwarta.  narusno ko.  adtong panahona di pa ko kahibawo moadtog dswd.  as a reflex action, i gave him all the money i had (450 pesos; nagbilin kog 50 aron makaplete pa ko padung sa amo).  then i exchanged information with some nuns about the situation.

to cut my story short, days later akong gi-follow-up.  the father was nowhere.  gibilin intawon ang bata sa hospital, where he couldn't pay the medical bills of a surgery but where he also knew that his baby will have a better shot at survival.  the nuns and the dswd stepped in, and the baby was put up for adoption.

i still remember that father's words:  luoy akong baby, no?

wa gyod tawon siya makahunahuna ug labay sa basurahan.  salamat.

It's an unlikely partnering, but a lonely chicken has struck up an extraordinary friendship with a cat.  In another life, Snowy the cat would surely be chasing chicken Gladys round the farm they both live on.  But against all the odds, the pair have become firm friends--even lavishing affection on each other.

The incredible friendship blossomed just over two months ago when a fox killed 13 chicks--leaving Gladys as the only survivor.

Alone and in need of a friend, Gladys was brought into the farmhouse by her owners to keep her safe.  And it was here her beautiful friendship with Snowy began.

Now the two pals are inseparable at the farm in Middleton, near Leiston in Suffolk, and Snowy even puts her paw around the chicken to comfort her.
