Lastly, the thing about the harps was actually invented by John Milton who wrote about angels "plucking harps" in Paradise Lost, basically just because it was the cutest thing he could pull out of his ass.

Cherubs in particular didn't get their extreme makeover until Renaissance sculptors revived the ancient practice of putti, which depicted cute babies dancing and playing around on infant tombs.  The rediscovery and reimplementation of these little cuties brought Cupid-esque cherubs into vogue, as demonstrated by Tomba di Ilaria del Carretto:

Whaddya know?  Those dancing naked babies do make this tomb less unsettling.

the popular image of angels that we have
Actually Came From:

Painters took liberties when portraying angels, and just like putting capes on superheroes, giving them wings was a visually interesting way to identify who was the angel in a painting full of regular dudes (wings were also used in the early church to denote that these creatures lived in the sky).  Archangels like Michael and Gabriel were given contemporary military garb.

Which apparently included "hair like a lady."

Then we have the cutest order of angels, the Cherubim.  As we all know, a cherub is a baby angel, usually with a little bow and arrow and a leaf protecting his modesty.  Except that Ezekiel 10:14 describes them as frightening four-headed monstrosities that included the faces of a man, an eagle and a lion.

Then there are the Thrones, which are described in the Bible as "wheels within wheels," the rims of which are covered in eyes.

Whatever it is, we're pretty sure it can see.

The Only Problem Is ...

Now, there are angels in the Bible.  But if you encountered some of the angels it describes, you'd probably need a shotgun under your bed to sleep soundly for the rest of your life.*

*NOTE: That is a joke.  If angels turn out to be real, and you encounter one, do not shoot it with a shotgun.

There are several kinds of angels in the Bible and you've probably heard about some of them, like Archangels, Cherubim and Seraphim.  They all look different, and very few actually have wings.  Those who do, like the Seraphim, actually have six wings and need all of them to cover their body, lest they blind/incinerate whoever is unlucky enough to bump into one.

This is a seraph, trying with all its might not to burn you alive.

The image of an angel is so recognizable that you can immediately spot one if somebody makes its shape in some snow.  They're sparkly people with two white wings and occasionally swords, who sit on clouds ripping out awesome harp solos while protecting humans from harm.  So, basically, the protagonists of the next Stephenie Meyer novel.

Pippa’s Butt Is The New It Butt

Hell with hemlines â€" the new barometer of trends is now the ass.  And this season, the It Butt belongs to Pippa Middleton.
In the most bizarre trend piece I've read in a long time, the Times of London (via the Telegraph) speculates that Pippa has replaced former butt greats J. Lo, Beyonce, Serena Williams, and Kim Kardashian as everybody's gluteal role model. Says plastic surgeon Dr. Constantino Mendieta.

The buttocks have been an increasing and escalating interest over the last four to five years, but the iconic figures were Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian.  Both have tremendous curves and large buttocks.  While lots of people love the overall shape of those women, many felt those derrières were just a bit too big.

A bit too ... ethnic?  Mendieta doesn't go there. Instead, he continues,

Ever since the royal wedding, Pippa Middleton has become the new queen of the booty.  She opens the doors to those who did not know you could have a small, shapely and perky backside without the large size.

Pippa Middleton opens so many doors for women â€" she truly is the Susan B. Anthony of butts.  But what if you got your ass enhanced back before surgeons discovered this small-yet-shapely revelation?  Not to worry â€" with trends changing so quickly, soon butt alterations will be as common as getting a dress taken in.  Just take your butt to the tailor, leave it for a couple of days, and when you come back: voilà!  A whole new ass for fall.  Of course, you still have to get the new It Nose, which is â€" surprise! â€" Pippa Middleton's.

When Cabrera of PAWS asked what happens to the votes of other institutional members who were against tambucho-killing, Dr. Mateo snapped: “Wala na. Their votes are nullified.”  Just like that.  In short, that voting was “lutong macaw” and shameful.

Dr. Hercules Baldos of the Philippine Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) warned the other members not to speak to media, waving a copy of my earlier column on tambucho-killing, saying that I was fed the wrong information that fumes from diesel-powered engines would be used instead of from gasoline-powered engines, in tambucho-killing.

That shows the ignorance of some members of CAW.  Whether the fumes come from diesel-powered or gasoline-powered engines, it is the same banana, the torture and pain and suffering of the dogs are the same.  And it still should be banned even if the fumes will come from a presidential Porsche, although I doubt if P-Noy will allow his chariot to be used to kill any dog.

Those who favored tambucho-killing said that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas and that this is approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association.  Inaccurate.  Carbon monoxide in its pure form is indeed odorless and colorless and kills painlessly.  But they come in cylinders and is not the same as vehicle exhaust fumes.  Although vehicle exhaust also contains carbon monoxide, it also contains many other gases and especially plenty of carbon particles which suffocate the dogs.

The mystery is why some members of an animal welfare committee want to use a very cruel method of euthanasia when there is a barbiturate that puts the dogs to sleep painlesslyâ€"Euthal.  This is what veterinarians use to euthanize the pets of their private clients.  Why use a different method for stray dogs?

http://paws.org.ph/
#38052
Animal Kingdom was assigned to draft the correct Administrative Order deleting tambucho-killing from the accepted methods of euthanasia, but the BAI-AWD never sent it to Secretary Alcala for his signature, prompting animal welfare groups to write directly to Alcala, who forwarded the letter to BAI-AWD’s Mateo.

On April 12, 2011, CAW called for a “Public Consultation on AO on Euthanasia.”  None of the animal welfare groups received any notice of this public consultation.

The representative of the Solicitor General, Edgardo R. Sison, said the other institutional members should be informed when a motion was introduced for a new voting on tambucho-killing.  Dr. Ricardo Gicana of the Philippine Society of Animal Science (PSAS) said there should be a re-voting without giving notices to the other institutional members.

Ana Cabrera of PAWS asked why there was a need for a re-voting when there was nothing wrong with the results of the voting the last timeâ€"there was a quorum and the majority voted against tambucho-killing.

The government representatives, however, insisted on a re-voting.

In short, that “public consultation” was railroaded to allow the return of tambucho-killing.  And because of the absence of a number of institutional members of CAW, that very cruel method of “euthanizing” dogs was restored.
#38053
There was a quorum and a majority voted for the deletion of tambucho-killing as a method of killing dogs.  Recommended method was injecting a barbiturate called Euthal to the dog.  It puts the dog to sleep and is painless.

On the other hand, tambucho-killing is a very cruel way of killing dogs.  It consists of putting the condemned dogs in a small airtight metal box and inserting the tailpipe of a vehicle through a small hole.  The vehicle is then started and the exhaust fumes fill up the box.

What happens next is pure horror out of hell.  The dogs begin to suffocate from the smoke and fumes; they panic, they retch and vomit, they howl and bark, they frantically scratch at the sides of the metal box.  They twist and suffer spasms.  This extreme torture lasts for at least 10 minutes.

For God’s creatures suffering such pain and torture, that’s an eternity.  You wouldn’t want your worst enemy to go through it.  That is why the majority of CAW members voted to ban it.

But it is strange that CAW members from the government, ironically those tasked to look after the welfare of animals, are not happy with the ban on tambucho-killing.  And the Animal Welfare Division of the BAI came out with an erroneous administrative order which it sent to Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala.

It said all “inhalants” are banned.  This is erroneous.  Carbon monoxide is still allowed but not vehicle exhaust fumes, which has plenty of carbon particles and other gases.

'Tambucho'-killing: Very cruel way to kill dogs

Neal Cruz
Philippine Daily Inquirer
04/18/2011

TODAY BEING Holy Monday, the second day of Holy Week, it is timely, while meditating on the sufferings of Christ to save mankind, to think about what cruelties some of the humans he saved are inflicting on man’s best friend: dogs.

Congress passed, years ago, a law to prevent cruelty to animals: the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). It punishes cruelty to animals and bans the holding of dog fights and horse fights.

To implement the provisions of the law, the Committee on Animal Welfare (CAW) was created. Its members are government functionaries having to do with animals, heads of associations of veterinarians and representatives of animal welfare groups such as Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), Animal Kingdom Foundation, Cara Welfare Philippines and Philippine Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA).

Head of the committee is Dr. Angel Mateo of the Animal Welfare Division of the Bureau of Animal Industry.

On Aug. 24, 2010, a meeting was called by CAW specifically to vote on the deletion or non-deletion of the use of vehicle exhaust fumes, called tambucho-killing (named after the tailpipes of vehiclesâ€"tambucho) as a method of euthanasia for unwanted stray dogs.

i would rue the day the philippines will have a giant statue of sharon cuneta in one of its cities.

Indecent, offensive art not for public display
Philippine Daily Inquirer
4:27 am | Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

From the beginning to the end of our Fine Arts studies, we students had lectures on the philosophy artists, in general, have to accept, uphold and respectâ€"that “Art is the expression of the true, the good and the beautiful”; that “A thing of beauty is a joy forever”; and that art is used to uplift, rather than dampen, man’s mind and spirit… etc.

However, if an artist insists on exercising his so-called freedom of expression, he is free to do so, he can express unconventional, even forbidden and offensive ideas, but within the limits of the privacy of his own world.  By so doing, no one can stop him, so to speak, though the heavens fall.

Using his brush, an artist can paint any object or abstract image his mind and soul may dictate.  Like a mirror, his works reflect his inner self.

I therefore believe that whatever was wrong about Mideo Cruz’s “Poleteismo” lay in the fact that it was displayed in public.  Works of art that are lewd, indecent, and offensive to human sensibilities and dignity, should be kept inaccessible to public viewing.

Simply put, Cruz’s work leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Artist Mideo Cruz a no-show at Senate probe into controversial exhibit

By Maila Ager
INQUIRER.net
10:31 am | Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

MANILA, Philippines â€" Mideo Cruz, one of the artists behind the controversial “Kulo” exhibit, was a no-show when the Senate began its inquiry into the matter on Tuesday.

Senate Pro Tempore Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada immediately moved that Cruz be subpoenaed in the next hearing when the Senate education, arts and culture joint with public information and mass media started its proceedings at about 10:00 a.m.

It was Estrada, who initiated the investigation after he delivered a privilege speech last week, calling for the resignation of all Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) officials, who approved the exhibit, showing defaced religious figures.

The committee secretary said an invitation was sent to Cruz last August 10 and the committee received an acknowledgment receipt through email from the artist.

But Cruz, the committee secretary said, did not confirm his attendance and made no reply when the committee attempted to contact him again.

At that point, Estrada moved to subpoena Cruz.

But Senator Edgardo Angara, chairman of the education committee, gave Cruz until 12:00 noon to show up in the hearing before issuing a subpoena against him.

CCP and Catholics Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) officials attended the hearing.

Other Thoughts On Adam and Eve As Our First Parents

there are a myriad of interesting blogs on what to make of adam and eve as our first parents.  some of my favorites, admittedly because they are faith-based:

the question:

As Catholics, are we required to believe that Eve was literally created from Adam in some (miraculously) way? ...and if so, where is this defined?

some answers:

The opposing position (in my mind) would be that this account in Genesis is simply a figure to show that women were created with equal dignity... and not necessarily a literal/historical account.  I really wouldn't have much of an issue accepting it as literal (if it must be so), but I would much rather have the option of not violating fundamental physical laws, if at all possible. (by masterjedi747)

Christians are required to believe in miracles. Otherwise, how would one explain or believe in the Incarnation or the Resurrection or the Ascension. So a Divine miraculous intervention at the start of the human race should not be excluded. (by Ron Conte)

***
Concerning human evolution, the Church has a more definite teaching.  It allows for the possibility that man’s body developed from previous biological forms, under God’s guidance, but it insists on the special creation of his soul.  Pope Pius XII declared that "the teaching authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions . . . take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matterâ€"but the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created by God" (Pius XII, Humani Generis 36).  So whether the human body was specially created or developed, we are required to hold as a matter of Catholic faith that the human soul is specially created; it did not evolve, and it is not inherited from our parents, as our bodies are. (by Steadfast love)

***
While miracles do happen, when something that may at first appear to be a miracle is explainable by natural forces, it need not be considered a miracle. When so called miracles are attributed to the intercession of a candidate for sainthood and there is a natural explanation, the "miracle" is not accepted as evidence.

There is a problem with some scholars who would try to explain away a true miracle by rather questionable means. For example the miracle of the loaves and fishes being attributed to a crowd deciding to share concealed food.

There are also folks who say because miracles defy the laws of science there can be no such thing as a miracle. However that is the very definition of a miracle, an event or happening that is outside the laws of science, laws which are sometimes confused with the natural law.

One may accept the narrative of the creation of Adam and Eve at face value or that the formation of their physical bodies can be attributed to an evolutionary mechanism of one sort or another.  The Church does not require belief in either explanation. (by rwoehmke)

the beginning of what we are on our road to salvation had fascinated me too.  thus i try to read up all i can when i could all the different viewpoints.  some things i paid attention to:

Intellectual humility is a necessity when reading Scripture.

We believe that we must have intellectual humility when reading Scripture.  The great theologian Augustine in the fourth century said this:

God wished difficulties to be scattered through the sacred books inspired by him, in order that we might be urged to read and scrutinize them more intensely, and, experiencing in a salutary manner our own limitations, we might be exercised into submission of mind. (Divino Afflante Spiritu, 45, cf. At. Augustine)

Augustine did not believe that God was making scientific assertions in Genesis, he may or may not be right.  But regardless of whether we agree with his position on Genesis, his point about the difficulties in interpreting Scripture stand. (http://www.davidmacd.com/catholic/catholic_creationism.htm)

Did we literally come from one set of parents, Adam & Eve?

There are many scientific theories that attempt to prove that there was no such thing as one man and one woman at the beginning of humanity.  They theorize that there were a group of people who were our first parents (polygenism).  They claim that Adam and Eve are archetypes for humanity.  When this evolutionary theory began to gain momentum in the 50's, Pope Pious XII made a statement about it in Humani Generis:

When, however, there is question of another conjectural opinion, namely polygenism, the children of the Church by no means enjoy such liberty.  For the faithful cannot embrace that opinion which maintains that either after Adam there existed on this earth true men who did not take their origin through natural generation from him as from the first parent of all, or that Adam represents a certain number of first parents.  Now it is no way apparent how such an opinion can be reconciled with that which the sources of revealed truth and the documents of the Teaching Authority of the Church propose with regard to original sin, which proceeds from a sin actually committed by an individual Adam and which, through generation, is passed on to all and is in everyone as his own. In the US and UK, this unusual gesture no longer raises eyebrows.

Miami heiress Gail Posner, who died in March, left a $3-million trust fund and an $8.3-million mansion to her Chihuahuas, Conchita, Lucia and April Marie.

According to the Wall Street Journal, seven of her bodyguards, housekeepers and other personal aides were also left a total of $26-million under her will, and some were allowed to live in the mansion to care for the dogs.

However, Posner's son, Brett Carr, who was left a paltry $1-million in comparison, is now disputing the will and suing Posner's personal aides, whom he claims took advantage of his mother and changed her will.

It has also been reported in the US that billionaire talk-show host Oprah Winfrey has a posh contingency plan for her pooches: $30-million has reportedly been allocated in her will to care for her dogs after her death.

Durban-based lawyers this week said the motive for a growing number of people including their pets into their wills was to ensure that the pet in question is looked after.  The wills also identify someone to administer the estate on the animal's behalf.

The pets also don't squabble over their owner's estate.

Perhaps the most celebrated inheritance case in South Africa is that of Kalu, the chimpanzee.  Kalu was expected to inherit a staggering $40-million fortune when his owner, Patricia Cavendish O'Neill, died.  O'Neill, the last of a long line of aristocrats, drew up a will in 1999 leaving her fortune and sanctuary, Broadlands in Western Cape's Somerset West, to Kalu. A portion of her wealth was also to be shared among other animals which had been adopted and placed in her sanctuary.

In an interview with MNet's Carte Blanche in 2003, she said: "The money has been put in a trust, called the Kalu Animal Trust.  There are 32 baboons, 65 dogs and 14 cats to look after as well as Kalu.

"In the trust I've left the farm to the chimpanzee.  Basically it is called the Kalu Animal Trust," she said.

O'Neill, who once bought an entire stock of live crayfish at a restaurant in the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town so she could release them into the ocean, was so concerned about her animals that she wanted to keep the sanctuary going at all costs. "What happens when I die? What's going to happen to all my beloved animals?  I am with them every day.  My baboons, I bring them up like babies, nappies and three-hour feeds, they are all like my children," the author told Carte Blanche.

In KwaZulu-Natal, an elderly spinster left a large amount of cash and her upmarket Durban North home to her dog.  Her two elderly domestic workers were allowed to live rent-free to care for the dog.

According to the will, upon the death of the dog and two care-givers, the house and remaining cash will be donated to a charity foundation.

"The house is fairly large and it's one of the older houses in the (upmarket) neighbourhood ... but I don't want to give too much detail otherwise it will be easily recognised," said Sean O'Hagan, a Johannesburg-based lawyer.

Another pet with a huge windfall is a parrot, who stands to inherit a house in Cape Town.  The lawyer who is busy drafting the will said his client was not willing to comment or disclose any details about it.

In Durban, a lawyer said his client had left R50000 in a trust for the care of his cat.

Estates going to the dogs

by MONICA LAGANPARSAD

While cash-strapped Zimbabweans and South Africans may consider pet-owners who include dogs in their wills as barking mad, a growing number of animal-lovers are leaving their entire fortunes to their loyal pets.

Some of the pampered pets are even sole beneficiaries of trusts which include cars, houses and even jewellery.

Lawyers this week said the bizarre gesture was no longer unusual in South Africa.

For jealous and stunned humans, this provokes the question: what on earth do they spend it on?  But the evidence does suggest they have no difficulty spending the money or enjoying their new home comforts.

The canines, according to one lawyer, don't splash out on doggy bling but rather everyday essentials.
