St. Alphonsus Liguouri reminds us that how important it is to live the life that Jesus told us to, and love our enemies.

“True charity consists in doing good to those who do us evil, and in thus winning them over.”

Sometimes it can be harder for us to forgive ourselves, than for God to forgive us.  No matter we’ve done, Christ came to save us, not condemn us.  Through Jesus, we can have everlasting life, and we can start or continue that journey today.  So as we go through our day let us try and keep the following quote from St. Cyril of Jerusalem in mind:

“The Lord is loving unto man, and swift to pardon, but slow to punish. Let no man therefore despair of his   own salvation."

Thanks for that definition, Mike. Sadly, I am quite weak in Bisaya and the fact that I grew up outside the Philippines left me significantly weaker in my command of Bisaya and considerably weaker in Tagalog. I'm learning more and more Bisaya through my stay here in Tubag Bohol, and I will admit that there is still so much to learn.

Lawom kaajo ! :D

Bible Study / The Prayer of Serenity
August 04, 2013, 10:04:21 PM
Heavenly Father,
Grant to us the serenity of mind to accept that which cannot be changed;
Courage to change that which can be changed;
And wisdom to know the one from the other.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.

Amen.

Dear Lord, thank you for all you have done for me,
It is with a humble heart that I ask you to
Grant me the strength I need during this time.
Grant me the wisdom to make the right decisions.
Grant me the patience to do what must be done.

O Lord,
I know you will be with me through this time and will you shield me from things I cannot handle.
It is with the most humble heart I ask thee.
Amen.

Soul of Christ, sanctify me

Body of Christ, save me

Blood of Christ, inebriate me

Water from Christ's side, wash me

Passion of Christ, strengthen me

O good Jesus, hear me

Within Thy wounds hide me

Suffer me not to be separated from Thee

From the malicious enemy defend me

In the hour of my death call me

And bid me come unto Thee

That I may praise Thee with Thy saints

and with Thy angels

Forever and ever

Amen

Christ’s love for us is unlike any other in this world. All you have to do is look at a crucifix to realize this. Remember that, as St. Paul said, God shows us His great love “because when as yet we were sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom 5:8 ).

We see symbols of His Passion in the Sacred Heart as well, both in the Cross which surmounts it and the thorns which surround it. The thorns symbolize Christ’s sorrow over all the ingratitude He’s been shown by mankind over His Passion. (Remember also that His Sacred Heart was pierced with a lance upon His death on the cross.)

And yet, we see triumph in this image as well. The cross is a symbol of Christ’s victory over sin and death. And what do we see all around Jesus’ Sacred Heart? Rays of light! Rays of light that in themselves suggest rays of love for fallen humanity, a love just waiting to be requited by our repentance of sins and trust in Him to see us through good times and bad!

(Incidentally, Our Blessed Mother had an image of our Lord’s Sacred Heart placed on the famous Miraculous Medal she inspired for people to receive graces and grow in Holiness.)

And speaking of repentance, one that comes straight from the heart, think of these lines from Psalm 51: “Have mercy on me, O God….wash away all my guilt…Create a clean heart in me, O God…a contrite heart and humbled heart you will not spurn.”

It is in humility that that we can come closest to Jesus. And then we can place our contrite, yet trusting hearts in the shelter of His Sacred Heart, joining them together as one!

For example He says in Luke’s Gospel (Lk 12:49) “I have come to cast fire on the earth”, a fire of blazing love and zeal for Him and His Gospel message. Such fervor could be quite catchy. As the two disciples asked themselves after seeing our Lord on the road to Emmaus: “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was speaking on the road and explaining to us the scriptures?” (Luke 24:32)

Jesus revealed to St. Margaret Mary the wonderful image of His Sacred Heart we see depicted in this picture above. What part of the body most symbolizes human love? The heart! (We’re talking here about love, not lust, although modern pop culture often sadly confuses the two emotions!) And what do we say so often when someone seems to be doing something lackadaisically? That their heart is not in it.

Clearly there’s nothing lukewarm in Christ’s love! In this image above, we see here the fire of Jesus’ love for us, mentioned above, emanating from the two flames protruding at the top of His Sacred Heart.

Our Lord clearly wishes us to identify the intensity of His love for us with His burning heart. As both God and man, Jesus has a heart just like ours, capable of feeling love, joy and sadness just as we can, but on a much grander scale, of course!

The main thing, as touched upon earlier, is to approach Jesus’ Sacred Heart with love, contrition, trust in our Lord’s mercy, and a desire to make atonement for all the offenses and indifference He has suffered.

This devotion can increase our capacity for love, and not just for Jesus by any means! Pope Leo XIII, who consecrated the human race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1899, called the Sacred Heart of Jesus “a symbol and clear image of Jesus Christ's infinite love, a love which impels us to love one another.” Or as Pope John Paul II put it in broader terms, "The heart-to-heart withJesus broadens the human heart on a global scale."

Jesus clearly wishes devotion to His Sacred Heart to enkindle in us, as we say in the Prayer to the Holy Spirit, the fire of His love! As we often see in scripture, Jesus was not one to express himself in a tepid or indifferent fashion.

While Communion is a prime aspect of this devotion, honoring our Lord in his Sacred Heart in Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament is also quite important.

It’s a good idea as well to have a picture of Our Lord and His Sacred Heart, such as the one above, in your home. This can help give you His strength and support. So can saying a short prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the midst of a busy day.

Jesus complained to St. Margaret Mary of the coldness and ingratitude he received just from Christians alone, much less from the rest of humanity, considering all He did for us in opening up the gates of heaven for us in His Passion so that we might have Eternal Life!

Interestingly enough, Jesus provides a remedy for such spiritual anemia in what has been called His Great Promise, a special devotion to His Sacred Heart he revealed to St. Margaret Mary that involves faithful Catholics taking Communion in a state of grace on nine consecutive First Fridays of each month.

Would you like to have a heart-to heart encounter with our Lord? Prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus are a wonderful part of a devotion to His Sacred Heart that goes back centuries, practiced by such luminaries in our faith as St. Gertrude, St. Bonaventure, St. Francis De Sales, and St. John Eudes.

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a 17th century French nun and mystic, received messages from Jesus in various apparitions concerning this devotion, and became a driving force behind spreading it publicly in the manner we know today.

This devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a powerful way of drawing closer to our Lord by joining our hearts to His Sacred Heart in a spirit of love, trust, adoration, and most importantly, reparation for the many sins and insults He has endured.

O Lord, who art ever merciful and bounteous with Thy gifts, look down upon the suffering souls in purgatory. Remember not their offenses and negligences, but be mindful of Thy loving mercy, which is from all eternity. Cleanse them of their sins and fulfill their ardent desires that they may be made worthy to behold Thee face to face in Thy glory. May they soon be united with Thee and hear those blessed words which will call them to their heavenly home: "Come, blessed of My Father, take possession of the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world."

O Lord Forgive Prayer

My failure to be true even to my own accepted standards:
O Lord, forgive!
"My self-deception in the face of temptation: O Lord, forgive!
My choosing of the worse when I knew the better:
O Lord forgive!
My failure to apply to myself the standards of conduct that I demand of others;
Lord forgive!
My blindness to the suffering of others and my slowness to be taught by my own:
O Lord, forgive!
My complacence toward wrongs that do not touch my won case and my over sensitiveness to those that do:
O Lord, forgive!
My slowness to see the good in my fellows and to see the evil in myself:
O Lord forgive!
My hardness of heart toward my neighbor's faults and my readiness to make allowance for my own:
O Lord for give!
My unwillingness to believe that You have called me to a small work and my brother to a great one:
O Lord, forgive!

Answer:

As for entering Purgatory , Yes a person is saved when they are sent to Purgatory they are sent to purgatory to expiate the stain of forgiven Sins that have not been expiated to the satisfaction of GOD while alive. In fact - it is through charity and good works and prayer and the prayers of others that can expiate sins - hence does St Paul say - Charity covers a multitude of sins - and once in purgatory we are then stuck there to serve out our entire length of sentence unless someone prays for us lessening our time. It is a charitable act to Pray for the dead so that they may be loosed from their sins.

How to Forgive: Understanding the Trinity's Role

When we have been hurt, our instinct is to hurt back. We want to make the other person pay for what they did. But exacting revenge steps over the line into God's territory, as Paul warned,

Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.
(Romans 12:19)

If we cannot take revenge, then we must forgive. God commands it. But how? How can we let it go when we have been unjustly hurt?

The answer lies in understanding the Trinity's role in forgiveness. Christ's role was to die for our sins. God the Father's role was to accept Jesus' sacrifice on our behalf and forgive us. Today, the Holy Spirit's role is to enable us to do those things in the Christian life we cannot do on our own, namely forgive others because God has forgiven us.

Refusing to forgive leaves an open wound in our soul that festers into bitterness, resentment, and depression. For our own good, and the good of the person who hurt us, we simply must forgive. Just as we trust God for our salvation, we have to trust him to make things right when we forgive. He will heal our wound so we can move on.

Rolling our burdens onto the Lordâ€"that's the secret of the Christian life, and the secret of how to forgive. Trusting God. Depending on him instead of ourselves. It's a hard thing but not a complicated thing. It's the only way we can truly forgive.

How to Forgive: Understanding Others

Even when other people's criticism is valid, it's still hard to take. It reminds us that we have failed in some way. We didn't measure up to their expectations, and often when they remind us of that, tact is low on their priority list.

Sometimes our critics have ulterior motives. An old proverb from India goes, "Some men try to be tall by cutting off the heads of others." They try to make themselves feel better by making others feel bad. You have probably had the experience of being put down by a nasty remark. When that happens, it is easy to forget that others are broken just like us.

Jesus understood the brokenness of the human condition. No one knows the human heart like him. He forgave tax collectors and prostitutes, and forgave his best friend Peter, for betraying him. On the cross, he even forgave the people who killed him. He knows that humansâ€"all humansâ€"are weak.

For us, though, it usually doesn't help to know that those who have hurt us are weak. All we know is that we were injured and we can't seem to get over it. Jesus' command in the Lord's Prayer seems too hard to obey: "And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors." (Mark 6:12)
#3849
How to Forgive: Understanding Our Worth

We are all wounded. We are all inadequate. On our best days, our self-esteem hovers somewhere between feeble and fragile. All it takes is disapprovalâ€"or perceived disapprovalâ€"to send us staggering. These attacks bother us because we forget who we really are.

As believers, you and I are forgiven children of God. We have been lovingly adopted into his royal family as his sons and daughters. Our true worth comes from our relationship to him, not from our appearance, our performance or our net worth. When we remember that truth, criticism bounces off us like BBs ricocheting off a rhino. The trouble is that we forget.

We seek others' approval. When they reject us instead, it hurts. By taking our eyes off God and his acceptance and putting them on the conditional acceptance of our boss, spouse, or friend, we set ourselves up to be hurt. We forget that other people are incapable of unconditional love.
#3850
Learning how to forgive others is one of the most unnatural duties in the Christian life.

It goes against our human nature. Forgiving is a supernatural act that Jesus Christ was capable of, but when we are hurt by someone, we want to hold a grudge. We want justice. Sadly, we don't trust God with that.

There is a secret to successfully living the Christian life, however, and that same secret applies when we're struggling with how to forgive.

40. Wherefore, since a thing may be "born" of something else, yet not in the fashion of a "son," and conversely, since not everyone who is called son is born of him whose son he is called--this is the very mode in which Christ was "born" of the Holy Spirit (yet not as a son), and of the Virgin Mary as a son--this suggests to us the grace of God by which a certain human person, no merit whatever preceding, at the very outset of his existence, was joined to the Word of God in such a unity of person that the selfsame one who is Son of Man should be Son of God, and the one who is Son of God should be Son of Man. Thus, in his assumption of human nature, grace came to be natural to that nature, allowing no power to sin. This is why grace is signified by the Holy Spirit, because he himself is so perfectly God that he is also called God's Gift. Still, to speak adequately of this--even if one could--would call for a very long discussion.

What we said about the hair and the other things has this much relevance, that it reminds us that not everything which is "born" of something is said to be "son" to him from which it is "born." Likewise, it does not follow that those who are called sons of someone are always said to have been born of him, since there are some who are adopted. Even those who are called "sons of Gehenna" are not born of it, but have been destined for it, just as the sons of the Kingdom are destined for that.
#3854
Bible Study / Re: The Role of the Holy Spirit

39. Consequently we should not grant that whatever is born of something should therefore be called the son of that thing. Let us pass over the fact that a son is "born" of a man in a different sense than a hair is, or a louse, or a maw worm--none of these is a son. Let us pass over these things, since they are an unfitting analogy in so great a matter. Yet it is certain that those who are born of water and of the Holy Spirit would not properly be called sons of the water by anyone. But it does make sense to call them sons of God the Father and of Mother Church. Thus, therefore, the one born of the Holy Spirit is the son of God the Father, not of the Holy Spirit.
#3855
Bible Study / Re: The Role of the Holy Spirit
August 02, 2013, 09:48:22 AM
For what still concerns us is how it can be said, "Born of the Holy Spirit," when he is in no wise the Son of the Holy Spirit? Now, just because God made fecit this world, one could not say that the world is the son of God, or that it is "born" of God. Rather, one says it was "made" or "created" or "founded" or "established" by him, or however else one might like to speak of it. So, then, when we confess, "Born of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary," the sense in which he is not the Son of the Holy Spirit and yet is the son of the Virgin Mary, when he was born both of him and of her, is difficult to explain. But there is no doubt as to the fact that he was not born from him as Father as he was born of her as mother.
#3856
Bible Study / Re: The Role of the Holy Spirit
August 02, 2013, 09:48:15 AM
How, then, do we say that Christ is born of the Holy Spirit, if the Holy Spirit did not beget him? Is it because he made him? This might be, since through our Lord Jesus Christ--in the form of God--all things were made. Yet in so far as he is man, he himself was made, even as the apostle says: "He was made of the seed of David according to the flesh."80 But since that creature which the Virgin conceived and bore, though it was related to the Person of the Son alone, was made by the whole Trinity--for the works of the Trinity are not separable--why is the Holy Spirit named as the One who made it? Is it, perhaps, that when any One of the Three is named in connection with some divine action, the whole Trinity is to be understood as involved in that action? This is true and can be shown by examples, but we should not dwell too long on this kind of solution.

Bible Study / The Role of the Holy Spirit

Written by: St. Augustine the Great, Doctor of the Church

CHAPTER XII

38. Are we, then, to say that the Holy Spirit is the Father of Christ's human nature, so that as God the Father generated the Word, so the Holy Spirit generated the human nature, and that from both natures Christ came to be one, Son of God the Father as the Word, Son of the Holy Spirit as man? Do we suppose that the Holy Spirit is his Father through begetting him of the Virgin Mary? Who would dare to say such a thing? There is no need to show by argument how many absurd consequences such a notion has, when it is so absurd in itself that no believer's ear can bear to hear it. Actually, then, as we confess our Lord Jesus Christ, who is God from God yet born as man of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, there is in each nature (in both the divine and the human) the only Son of God the Father Almighty, from whom proceeds the Holy Spirit.

Accordingly, in so far as he is God, he and the Father are one. Yet in so far as he is man, the Father is greater than he. Since he was God's only Son--not by grace but by nature--to the end that he might indeed be the fullness of all grace, he was also made Son of Man--and yet he was in the one nature as well as in the other, one Christ. "For being in the form of God, he judged it not a violation to be what he was by nature, the equal of God. Yet he emptied himself, taking on the form of a servant,"74 yet neither losing nor diminishing the form of God.75 Thus he was made less and remained equal, and both these in a unity as we said before. But he is one of these because he is the Word; the other, because he was a man. As the Word, he is the equal of the Father; as a man, he is less. He is the one Son of God, and at the same time Son of Man; the one Son of Man, and at the same time God's Son. These are not two sons of God, one God and the other man, but one Son of God--God without origin, man with a definite origin--our Lord Jesus Christ.

35. Christ Jesus, Son of God, is thus both God and man. He was God before all ages; he is man in this age of ours. He is God because he is the Word of God, for "the Word was God."73 Yet he is man also, since in the unity of his Person a rational soul and body is joined to the Word.

But it was a nature entirely free from the bonds of all sin. It was not a nature born of both sexes with fleshly desires, with the burden of sin, the guilt of which is washed away in regeneration. Instead, it was the kind of nature that would be fittingly born of a virgin, conceived by His mother's faith and not her fleshly desires. Now if in his being born, her virginity had been destroyed, he would not then have been born of a virgin. It would then be false (which is unthinkable) for the whole Church to confess him "born of the Virgin Mary." This is the Church which, imitating his mother, daily gives birth to his members yet remains virgin. Read, if you please, my letter on the virginity of Saint Mary written to that illustrious man, Volusianus, whom I name with honor and affection.72

34. It would take too long to say all that would be truly worthy of this Mediator. Indeed, men cannot speak properly of such matters. For who can unfold in cogent enough fashion this statement, that "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,"70 so that we should then believe in "the only Son of God the Father Almighty, born of the Holy Spirit and Mary the Virgin." Yet it is indeed true that the Word was made flesh, the flesh being assumed by the Divinity, not the Divinity being changed into flesh. Of course, by the term "flesh" we ought here to understand "man," an expression in which the part signifies the whole, just as it is said, "Since by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified,"71 which is to say, no man shall be justified. Yet certainly we must say that in that assumption nothing was lacking that belongs to human nature.

Chapter X

33. Thus it was that the human race was bound in a just doom and all men were children of wrath. Of this wrath it is written: "For all our days are wasted; we are ruined in thy wrath; our years seem like a spider's web."64 Likewise Job spoke of this wrath: "Man born of woman is of few days and full of trouble."65 And even the Lord Jesus said of it: "He that believes in the Son has life everlasting, but he that believes not does not have life. Instead, the wrath of God abides in him."66 He does not say, "It will come," but, "It now abides." Indeed every man is born into this state. Wherefore the apostle says, "For we too were by nature children of wrath even as the others."67 Since men are in this state of wrath through original sin--a condition made still graver and more pernicious as they compounded more and worse sins with it--a Mediator was required; that is to say, a Reconciler who by offering a unique sacrifice, of which all the sacrifices of the Law and the Prophets were shadows, should allay that wrath. Thus the apostle says, "For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, even more now being reconciled by his blood we shall be saved from wrath through him."68 However, when God is said to be wrathful, this does not signify any such perturbation in him as there is in the soul of a wrathful man. His verdict, which is always just, takes the name "wrath" as a term borrowed from the language of human feelings. This, then, is the grace of God through Jesus Christ our Lord--that we are reconciled to God through the Mediator and receive the Holy Spirit so that we may be changed from enemies into sons, "for as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God."69

Let thy bright beams arise,
Dispel the darkness from our minds,
And open all our eyes.
Revive our drooping faith,
Our doubts and fears remove,

This is a powerful prayer !

On my knees before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses, I offer myself soul and body to Thee, Eternal Spirit of God. I adore the brightness of Thy purity, the unerring keenness of Thy justice, and the might of Thy love. Thou art the Strength and Light of my soul. In Thee I live and move and am. I desire never to grieve Thee by unfaithfulness to grace, and I pray with all my heart to be kept from the smallest sin against Thee. Mercifully guard my every thought and grant that I may always watch for Thy light and listen to Thy voice and follow Thy gracious inspirations. I cling to Thee and give myself to Thee and ask Thee by Thy compassion to watch over me in my weakness. Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus and looking at His Five Wounds and trusting in His Precious Blood and adoring His opened Side and stricken Heart, I implore Thee Adorable Spirit, helper of my infirmity, so to keep me in Thy grace that I may never sin against Thee. Give me grace O Holy Ghost, Spirit of the Father and the Son, to say to Thee always and everywhere, Speak Lord, for Thy servant heareth. Amen.

God our Father,
Your power brings us to birth,
Your providence guides our lives,
and by Your command we return to dust.

Lord, those who die still live in Your presence,
their lives change but do not end.
I pray in hope for my family,
relatives and friends,
and for all the dead known to You alone.

In company with Christ,
Who died and now lives,
may they rejoice in Your kingdom,
where all our tears are wiped away.
Unite us together again in one family,
to sing Your praise forever and ever.

Amen.

Thank You for your prayers, Nong. Do include her in your prayers, for the special intention of the repose of her soul. Do so also this Friday.

She was a very kind, loving, and God-fearing woman. She leaves behind her son who is a pre-med student at De Paul University and her husband. I will be attending her wake this Friday. Afterwards, she will be flown back to the Philippines to her family.

She turned 50 on July 13, 2013.

I will miss you dearly, Tita Arleen.

What Were The 15 Promises Made by the Blessed Virgin to St. Dominic ?
#3885
The Sabbatine Privilege consists of Our Lady's promise to release from Purgatory, through her special intercession, on the first Saturday after their death, those who meet these three requirements:

(1) You must wear the Scapular;

(2) You must observe chastity according to your state of life;

(3) You must recite daily the Little Office of Our Blessed Mother. (The Rosary or some other pious work may be substituted for the Office. ALL CONFESSORS were given faculty to make this substitution by Pope Leo XIII in June of 1901.

The Brown Scapular is a Sacramental!

A Sacramental is anything set aside by Holy Mother the Church to excite pious thoughts and increase devotion. Through these movements of the heart, venial sin is remitted and grace imparted. The possession of grace is the FOUNDATION OF PEACE. Let everyone wear the Scapular!

The first Scapular worn should be blessed by a priest and imposed by him (if possible). Any priest may bless and enroll in the Confraternity. After having received the initial blessed Scapular from a priest, no other Scapular need be blessed before wearing. The blessing and imposition are attached to the wearer for life. Every priest has the privilege of enrolling in the Scapular Confraternity.

The Scapular is 'Mary's Mantle.' made of wool, and MUST be worn over the shoulders so that one piece falls in front, the other in the back. Each time the Scapular is kissed with devotion, 500 days indulgence is granted to those in the state of grace. The Scapular Medal was created only for those who would suffer grave inconvenience in wearing the cloth and the indulgence of 500 days does NOT apply to the Medal. To obtain the graces and promise of the Scapular, it must be worn constantly. It should be worn day and night in sickness and in health.

When the Scapular is worn-out, being a sacred object, it should not be thrown in the regular garbage but should be burned or buried.

The Scapular is a Prayer

Mary's Motherhood is not limited to Catholics; it is extended to ALL MEN. Many miracles of conversion have been obtained through the devout wearing of the Scapular. The Scapular is a great missionary Sacramental. After the Rosary, the Scapular is the most highly indulgenced Sacramental in the Church.

"To save souls from Hell, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God."
    â€" Fatima. 1917

No matter how extraordinary this promise may appear to be, the Blessed Mother made it and She will keep it. At the word of Her FIAT, She conceived by the Holy Ghost and the Incarnate Word became Man. If Almighty God, in obedience to the word of the priest every day at Holy Mass, comes down upon our Altars Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, will He refuse His Mother this grace for Her children!

Question and Answer / Re: What is lung cancer?
August 01, 2013, 02:56:12 PM
Primary Versus Secondary Lung Cancer

Primary lung cancer starts in the lungs. The cancer cells are abnormal lung cells. Sometimes, people will have cancer travel from another part of their body or metastasize to their lungs. This is called secondary lung cancer because the lungs are a secondary site compared to the original primary location of the cancer. So, for example, breast cancer cells which have traveled to the lung are not lung cancer but rather metastatic breast cancer, and will require treatment prescribed for breast cancer rather than lung cancer.

Question and Answer / Re: What is lung cancer?

The Genetic Basis of Lung Cancer

All cells in the body contain the genetic material called deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Every time a mature cell divides into two new cells, its DNA is exactly duplicated. The cells are copies of the original cell, identical in every way. In this way our bodies continually replenish themselves. Old cells die off and the next generation replaces them.

A cancer begins with an error, or mutation, in a cell’s DNA. DNA mutations can be caused by the normal aging process or through environmental factors, such as cigarette smoke, breathing in asbestos fibers, and to exposure to radon gas.

Researchers have found that it takes a series of mutations to create a lung cancer cell. Before becoming fully cancerous, cells can be precancerous, in that they have some mutations but still function normally as lung cells. When a cell with a genetic mutation divides, it passes along its abnormal genes to the two new cells, which then divide into four cells with errors in their DNA and so on. With each new mutation, the lung tissue cell becomes more mutated and may not be as effective in carrying out its function as a lung cell. At a later stage of disease, some cells may travel away from the original tumor and start growing in other parts of the body. This process is call metastasis and the new distant sites are referred to as metastases.

A:

Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in one or both lungs. These abnormal cells do not carry out the functions of normal lung cells and do not develop into healthy lung tissue. As they grow, the abnormal cells can form tumors and interfere with the functioning of the lung, which provides oxygen to the body via the blood.

While I do agree that prayer has a qualitative effect in regards to patient's mood, there is only so much prayer can do in regards to addressing deficiencies of hormones, as in the case of depression. Attending therapy in conjunction with medication and prayer, can do wonders for patients.

Imagine that there’s a sure and simple cure for loneliness, anxiety, fear, depression, insecurity, anger, hatred, bitterness, or whatever else might ail you.

Anxiety can be treated with low dose benzodiazepam

Depression can be treated with SSRI such as Citalopram

Anger, Hatred and Bitterness if seen in conjunction with Depression and isolation disorder is a sign of BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder), and should be treated with Haloperidol and Olanzapine. If the patient is suicidal, we can also prescribe them Flupenthixol, which reduces suicidal behavior.

Psychotherapy is also a great way to address the intrapsychic tension in patients suffering with these psychopathologies.

I recommend they see a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist!

Risks are part of decision making. In the field of Medicine, risks are evaluated in regards to benefits, if the benefit is favorable, then a risky operation/procedure may be undertaken. If, however, the benefits are poor, then taking a risky operation / procedure should be dissuaded. In regards to the latter, ethical issues would arise and should be addressed accordingly. 8)

I'll give a case scenario:

A 56 year old woman who comes to the hospital with bradycardia, bradypnea, cbc results indicate total white blood cell count as being abnormally high, blood test came up with catalase positive, for staphylococcus aureus bacterium. With diagnosis of septecemia, the patient was treated with IV Vancomycin. After 6 hours in the Intensive Care Unit, the patient coded. The EKG monitor showed a diminishing QRS formation, which progressed from Ventricular Tachycardia into Ventricular Fibrillation, into Agonal Rhythm and finally into asystole. Despite aggressive cardiopulmonary efforts, which included 3 boluses of epinephrine and defibrillation, the patient did not respond.

In this situation, the attending physician would not open the thoracic cavity and initiate cardiac massage. In this situation, the benefits of such a procedure would be nil considering the septicemia.
