"It takes an abnormal motion of the cyclist in an accident for the Chiefs to respond.  Why can not protect the rider's head chiefs of such an object falls from above, straight down on the rider's head. However, this is an extremely unusual bicycle accident category."

An invisible cycle helmet wins design award

An invisible airbag for cyclists' head, shaped as a collar worn around the neck has won one of the world's largest monetary prize for design.

02 Sep 2011

The winners of the 2011 Index design awards were presented at a gala in the Danish capital Copenhagen.

Index: Award, which is the world's largest monetary prize for design, focuses on "Design to Improve Life â€" designs that target and solve problems in the daily life.

The award is split into five categories â€" Body, Home, Work, Play and Community â€" with the winner of each category winning 100,000 euros.

In the play category, Swedish Hovding â€" an invisible airbag for cyclists' head, shaped as a collar worn around the neck â€" won the prize.

This year's winners in the Body category was the See Better to Learn Better free eyeglasses program for Mexican children designed by Yves Behar from Switzerland.

In the Home category, the winner was Elemental Monterrey â€" a new model for social housing, also in Mexico.

Design for Change from China won the Work category.  It is a design based school competition designed to give children an opportunity to express their own ideas for a better world and put them into action.

In the Community category the winner was Design Seoul from South Korea â€" which the jury said was the first ever coherent design based approach to improve life for citizens in a very large city.

The nomination process has been open to all and people have been able to nominate their favourite life-improving design.  An international jury comprising designers, design scholars and thinkers, business people and curators the selected a group of finalists.

American man arrested for biting snake

03 Sep 2011

The suspect, David Senk, 54, was arrested on suspicion of unlawfully maiming or mutilating a reptile, Sacramento police said.  The badly injured snake underwent surgery.

Senk said he had no recollection of the incident after blacking out from drinking but felt "horrible as hell about it."

Asked why he might have bitten the snake, Senk replied: "I get drunk, I get crazy. I don't know. I've been an alcoholic for a long time."

Senk was taken into custody after police, responding to a report of an assault, found him lying on the ground with blood on his face.

Officers were then approached by another man and a woman who told them Senk had just taken two large bites out of their python when they let him hold the snake.

"There was nothing to indicate that the snake provoked him at all.  He (Senk) just out of the blue took a bite," the police spokesman said. "From what I understand, he didn't say anything. He was pretty incoherent."

The snake, measuring 3 to 4 feet in length, is recovering after a vet stitched it up.

Senk said he was "not too fond of snakes (but) I try not to bite them."

"It's the other way around usually," he added. They bite me."

LGU Philippines / Re: GMA aware of husband's misdeeds
September 05, 2011, 01:06:12 AM
“President Arroyo is more concerned about her ability to stay in office than developing a strategic approach to policy making,” he said.

Sycip noted that “it is not impossible that PGMA (Arroyo) will be forced out in the next couple of years,” the cable said.

In response to complaints about corruption, Arroyo agreed to form an advisory group, of which Sycip was a member.

The group advised the government to abandon taxes on earnings and shift to taxing evidence of wealth because taxing expenditures “better suits” the Filipino character and will ensure better collection.

The group also advised the Department of Finance to publicize the amount of value added tax (VAT) that retailers collect and turn them over to the government to dissuade underreporting.

“Sycip nonetheless has lamented that the GRP (the government) and PGMA, in particular, seem rarely to follow the advice of the group,” the cable said.

Guillermo Luz, then the executive director of the Makati Business Club (MBC), was also cited in the cable as optimistically noting that he saw more people jumping into the fray to battle corruption.

The MBC, which gathers the Philippines’ most prominent business leaders, spearheads an anti-corruption business coalition that, according to Luz, was gaining traction.

Luz warned, however, that the stakes were getting higher every day.

He said people should watch the rumors swirling around the Arroyos carefully.

“Regarding Mike Arroyo’s involvement, Luz said he senses that the allegations will continue and sooner or later someone will come forward with clear evidence of wrongdoing,” the cable said.

“Although the President (Arroyo) may be able to steer clear of any implications of personal wrongdoing, Luz said that there had been no previous instance in which a spouse’s scandal did not damage or bring down his or her partner.”

“Clearly, serious minds are increasingly questioning the Arroyo administration’s ability to lead the Philippines out of its difficulties. The irony is that, as they note, the government is doing more to combat corruption, but the problem is getting worse,” the cable said.

The cable noted that such assessments alarm potential foreign investors and may foreshadow serious growth problems down the road, as the Philippine government failed to attract outside investment and finds it unable to adequately invest in the country’s future.

LGU Philippines / Re: GMA aware of husband's misdeeds
September 05, 2011, 01:04:02 AM
Francis Chua, president of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce, claimed that almost all business people perceived worsening problems with corruption.

The cable said Chua echoed Sycip’s assessment that “the First Gentleman is a major problem with respect to corruption, pointing to his links to jueteng (illegal lottery) and the many politicians and local officials involved in the illegal gambling racket.”

“According to Sycip, First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo’s behavior, in particular, is damaging the credibility of the government and hinders President Arroyo’s ability to implement anti-corruption measures,” the cable said.

The cable quoted Sycip as saying that Mike Arroyo was allegedly heavily involved in illegal gambling or jueteng networks and closely connected with major smuggling syndicates

“President Arroyo, according to Sycip, is aware of her husband’s misdeeds, but she is unwilling to do anything to curb his activities because he was instrumental in marshaling campaign donations and is now keeping those supporters in line to help her maintain her grip on power,” the cable said.

“This creates a practical difficulty for cabinet secretaries, because many of these supporters have been placed in key government jobs and ‘report directly’ to the First Gentleman, bypassing the agency chain of command,” it added.

The cable also indicated the President’s son, then Pampanga congressman Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo, was allegedly involved in jueteng, too.

The cable said Sycip had repeatedly expressed worries about the government’s stability.

GMA aware of husband's misdeeds, says US cable

By Pia Lee-Brago
The Philippine Star
September 05, 2011

MANILA, Philippines -  Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was aware of her husband’s misdeeds and alleged involvement in illegal gambling activities and connections with major smuggling syndicates, according to a diplomatic cable released yesterday by the whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks.

A diplomatic cable classified “Confidential” by then US embassy economic counselor Robert Ludan said Arroyo was unwilling to curb her husband’s illegal activities.

The involvement of then first gentleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo was raised during a discussion between influential members of the Manila business community with officials of the US embassy in 2005.

Ludan sent the diplomatic cable to then US chargé d’affaires Joseph Mussomeli.  It also revealed the concerns of the business community about how corruption was undermining the Philippine economic outlook.

The cable referred to long-time embassy contact Washington Sycip, who is widely respected as among the top economic observers in the country.

Sycip reportedly described corruption to be at its worst ever and that it made it impossible for democracy to work in the Philippines.

Arroyo’s husband, Sycip alleged, was one of the worst offenders, with a reputation for corruption seeping down to all levels of society and eroding the president’s political standing.

been a victim of murphy's law today.

banana republic had to report late for work because he had to accompany me to the animal shelter to get our cat who's been under observation for four days now.

he had to tell the driver who fetches him to just go ahead to the office without him as i will be the one to drive him to work in a little while.

the driver leaves, but had to be called back because our car wouldn't start.  diagnosis:  battery drained.  i've forgotten that i haven't used the car for five days straight.

i take the office vehicle of the banana republic, something that i hate doing, to the animal shelter to fetch our cat.

smiling, i asked for our cat, but the vet tells me that the cat had to stay longer for more days of observation.  she may be suffering from feline schizophrenia.  heavens!

i search in the internet.  huhuhu.  there is such a thing as feline schizophrenia, after all.

she's a very sweet cat.  i can't believe it.  kamo bay naay iring nga mabuang, lalim bah!  huhuhu.  :'(

San Diego teen shot with crossbow after throwing rocks at cars

A 16-year-old teen was shot by a crossbow after he and a friend pelted a car with rocks.

A California teen picked the wrong car to pelt with rocks.

The 16-year-old San Diego boy was shot in the gut with a crossbow bolt after he and a pal threw rocks at a passing car, police said.

The shirtless teen and his friend had flung a rock at a black Toyota RAV4 at around 2:15 p.m. on Monday when a passenger pulled out a crossbow and fired, police told the San Diego Union Tribune.

The bolt - the deadly projectile fired by crossbows - pierced the boy in the right side of his belly, cops said.

The teen was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries, the newspaper said. His name was not released.

Cops think two Latino males were riding in the SUV, but they haven't made any arrests.

excerpts from It's too soon for Libyans to celebrate 'freedom'
By Linda S. Heard, Special to Gulf News
                     August 30, 2011

Gaddafi trial

Nevertheless, the $1.6 million (Dh5.87 million) bounty on his head ‘Dead or Alive' put up by two Libyan businessmen smacks too much of the Wild West for my liking.  When the revolutionaries and their backers are still an unknown quantity it is important for them to hold firmly to the rule of law rather than descend to the level of the ousted regime.

Personally, I would like to see the former leader brought before a Libyan court and given a fair trial rather than be packed-off to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.  It's hypocritical that the US is pressing for the latter option when it hasn't ratified the ICC itself.  And, in any case, until I see former US president George W. Bush and former British prime minister Tony Blair in the dock over Iraq, for me, that court has little credibility.

It's also unclear just how much sway NATO member countries â€" in particular the US, Britain and France â€" will have over Libya.  It's almost a given that those countries and others that have assisted in Libya's liberation will reap the benefits of lucrative oil and trade deals but will they demand permanent military bases on Libyan soil?

In fact, given that this particular military intervention was supposedly launched on the basis of humanitarian concerns, to protect civilians, Libya should be under no moral obligation to fall in line with western diktats.

At funeral, dog mourns the death of Navy SEAL killed in Afghanistan

By Claudine Zap | The Lookout â€" Fri, Aug 26, 2011

(Getty)

Jon Tumilson, a Navy SEAL, was one of 30 Americans killed in Afghanistan on Aug. 6 when a rocket-propelled grenade took out a U.S. Chinook helicopter.  He was mourned at a service in Rockford, Iowa, attended by 1,500 family members,  friends--and Hawkeye, Tumilson's dog.

The Labrador retriever was such an important part of Tumilson's life that the friends and family of the San Diego resident called the dog his "son."

When Tumilson's friend Scott Nichols walked to the front of the room to speak, Hawkeye followed, Today.com reports.  "As Nichols prepared to memorialize his friend, Hawkeye dutifully laid down near the casket," Scott Stump writes.

The loyal dog mourns:
