The Malaysian artist Chow Hon Lam has made some very funny but clever illustrations that also includes a touch of irony. The artist himself thinks that even if you are an animal, an object or some sort of food, you have something to say even though you can’t speak. Therefore Hon Lam wants to create and tell their story to the worldWhen people confront him about it, he just say: “I guess they must have something to say … Trust me, I try to communicate with them!” In the illustrations you can see how a the milk in a cow’s body is emptying itself while milking, gingerbread men creating themselves, a golfer breaking the sky with his golfball, etc.

Others have done similar illustrations showing how the world would be if everything was different and upside down in our lives.

Canadian doctors see face in testicle

Agence France-Presse
8:54 am | Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

OTTAWAâ€"Doctors in Canada saw a divine face in the testes of a man admitted to a hospital with severe pain and an inflamed scrotum, a scientific journal article said Wednesday.

Or at least, that is one possible explanation.

Two years ago, doctors at a teaching hospital affiliated with Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, spotted what appeared to be a face in ultrasound images of a 45-year-old patient’s scrotum.

“While scrolling through the ultrasound images, the residents and staff alike were amazed to see the outline of a man’s face staring up out of the image, his mouth agape as if the face seen on the ultrasound scan itself was also experiencing severe (pain),” doctors Gregory Roberts and Naji Touma wrote in the journal Urology.

“A brief debate ensued on whether the image could have been a sign from a deity (perhaps Min the Egyptian god of male virility); however, the consensus deemed it a mere coincidental occurrence rather than a divine proclamation.”

The growth turned out to be benign and surgeons removed the testicle.

The discovery was published in the latest issue of the journal Urology under the banner “The Face of Testicular Pain: A Surprising Ultrasound Finding.”

A moment’s silence.

“Of course you and I know how extremely difficult it is to invite Manny to any event or affair, no matter how important. Now let me answer your question with another question.”

“What would prompt Manny to attend the baptismal of a seemingly ordinary child unless there’s a connection?”

My colleague gave me the name of the mother, who he said is 23 years old and a student of the culinary arts.

He said photos of the baby and the baptism rites are in the girl’s Facebook account, in case I’d like to look them up.

Her initials, appropriately, are K.O., according to my colleague.

As to the report that Jinkee plans to file an annulment of their marriage, the scribe said there is absolutely no truth to that.

“Jinkee has plans to run for public office. It won’t be such a smart move to separate from her husband, even if the rumors happen to be true,” my colleague said.

http://sports.inquirer.net/

#37730
In spite of the mounting suspicions, the issue, according to my colleague, was already settled even before Manny left for Los Angeles.

Manny’s close friend and business associate Lito Camo is said to have come to the rescue of his compadre, swearing by a stack of Bibles that Manny was really “just a ninong.”

“Did Jinkee believe him? Or better yet, do you believe him? Maybe you know the truth, maybe you know who the girl is,” I told my scribe-friend.

#37731
“Is it true or is it just another rumor to distract Manny from his training?” I asked a colleague who I thought might be able to provide me with answers.

“Who’s the girl, did the baptismal happen in Los Angeles?” I asked sounding completely clueless.

My colleague let out a big yawn. “Where have you been? That story is almost a month old. Apparently you don’t read the tabloids.”

My colleague said he didn’t know exactly how the buzz started, “but maybe suspicions arose when concerned parties learned of the name given the child.”

“As you know, Manny has a penchant for giving his kids royal or monarchic names such as Princess, Queen Elizabeth. Curiously, Manny’s godchild who is suspected to be his biological child, was christened King Arthur.

The story of King Arthur

By Beth Celis
Philippine Daily Inquirer

At first I thought it was just a destabilization ploy that usually comes before a Pacquiao fight.  Apparently, someone had spread the word that our fighting congressman, Manny Pacquiao, had actually sired a child who was made to appear as his godchild and whose baptism he personally attended.  My colleague said the issue is three weeks old, but I first heard about it only yesterday in an early morning show.

It was actually a news update squelching an earlier report that Jinkee Pacquiao was seeking annulment of her marriage to the world’s most popular and perhaps richest boxer, because of his latest caper.  Naturally, I felt compelled to verify if there was some truth to this report.

‘Cat killer’ gets second chance at animal home

By Julie M. Aurelio
Philippine Daily Inquirer
12:24 am | Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Once branded a “cat killer” by animal lovers, Joseph Carlo Candare is slowly trying to reform his imageâ€"with a little help from the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).

On his first day of volunteering for the animal rights group, the Physics major from the University of the Philippines (UP) “looked lost,” shuffling his feet and lowering his head to avoid people’s stares.

“I recall him speaking in a very soft voice and I had to ask him to repeat what he said; that he didn’t know how to handle cats,” said Anna Hashim-Cabrera of PAWS told the Inquirer in a recent interview.

The volunteer work was part of an agreement Candare’s lawyer worked out with a Quezon City court after his client was convicted for animal cruelty for stomping on a stray cat, which died of its injuries.

The UP student went on to write about what he did in his blog in 2009, incurring the ire of animal lovers and prompting PAWS to file a case against him.

As punishment, Judge Catherine Manodon of the Metropolitan Trial Court Branch 49 fined him P2,000 and ordered him to render volunteer work in an animal shelter for two months.

At PAWS, which is home to 255 cats and 53 dogs, Candare’s duties include cleaning litter boxes and mopping the shelter’s floors under the watchful eye of his supervisor, Charlene Laxamana.

Cabrera and Laxamana said they were hopeful that the UP student’s experience at PAWS would help change his attitude toward animals.

“At the very least, we want him to have a basic respect for animals. We don’t expect him to adopt a cat or anything like that,” Laxamana said.

At first, Candare went to the shelter once a week for the first two months following his conviction in May. But right now, he shows up only once or twice a month, according to Cabrera.

“Perhaps he is busy with school work,” she said.

Recalling Candare’s first day of volunteering at PAWS, Cabrera said they introduced him to the cats, telling him their names as well as how they came to be at the shelter.

She added that she also guided him the first time he touched one of the cats assigned to his care.

Candare stroked the animal’s back and when he reached out to touch the cat’s face, the feline licked his hand, Cabrera recalled.

“I told him, ‘See, she likes you’ but maybe because I don’t know him that well, he looked very withdrawn,” she said.

Meanwhile, other PAWS volunteers were told not to say anything about his case or be rude to him so that he would not feel uncomfortable at the shelter.

Later on, Candare began asking questions about his “wards,” a sign that he was interested in them, Laxamana said.

“Sometimes he would ask, ‘So this one, where did he come from?’ He wanted to know the history of the cats,” she told the Inquirer.

Once, when their conversation turned to animal cruelty cases, Laxamana said she couldn’t help but ask him about his case.

Judging by his reply, she said she was of the impression that his actions were motivated by his desire for attention.

Just like other volunteers

“But you know, if I didn’t know that he had a case before involving animal cruelty, I would say he’s just like any other volunteer here,” Laxamana added.

Asked to assess their newest volunteer, both Cabrera and Laxamana said that it was still too early to tell if Candare had undergone a change of heart due to his volunteer work at PAWS.

Based on their estimate, the UP student has only rendered about 40 percent of the two months’ worth of volunteer work required of him by the court.

“But [from] what we have seen so far, we are always hopeful,” Cabrera said, adding: “We hope he would come more often though.”

And just like the animals who were abandoned or rescued but found a new home at PAWS, Candare’s volunteer work can be likened to being given a second chanceâ€"perhaps, a chance to reform, Cabrera noted.

Laxamana said that there are other people like Candare who do not like cats although they do not harm them.

For her, the rules are simple: If the animal does not hurt you, don’t hurt it at all.

“He’s seen the consequences of his actions. He doesn’t need the public to remind him of what will happen if he does it again,” she said, referring to Candare.

what were not in the news about this tragedy (other [unverified] stories and opinions from people i know in cebu; naturally, there will always be some two-cents' worth when it comes to tragedies such as this that are close to home):

1.   the husband was a good and gentle man who felt taken for granted by his family ever since he stopped working

2.  the man became unkempt and looking uncared for

3.  one of the children took on the habit of sleeping with a knife under her pillow as protection (against the father's serial outbursts)

4.  a former marathoner friend of mine opined that being a marathoner (as the murdered wife was in this case) makes one self-engrossed because one is so focused on winning; my friend's marathon days were a big source of trouble between him and his wife

i realized that while something in me tended to "side" with the murder victims, those i talked with who are based in cebu held some sympathy for the father.

Cebu rage victims come home to kin in Sorsogon

By Juan Escandor Jr.
Inquirer Southern Luzon
8:06 pm | Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

SORSOGON CITYâ€"Melinda Dio Ponce and her children Elaine Grace, Heather Joy and Elin Bridge came home to Sorsogon for the last time and, as usual, without Melinda’s husband Emmanuel.

The remains of the four members of the Ponce family, who were killed in a fit of rage by Emmanuel, were brought here on Monday in a homecoming that Melinda’s relatives here said she used to make every year without her husband.

Emmanuel shot himself dead in the family home in Talisay City, Cebu, after killing Melinda and their three children last Oct. 16.

The cream-white coffins of Melinda, 53, a bank manager; daughters Elaine Grace, 26, and Heather Joy, 25; and son Elin Bridge, 18, were brought for a wake to the San Antonio Funeral Homes here. Their burial was set on Thursday.

Aside from Melinda and the Ponce children, Emmanuel also killed house help Anatacia Deniega.

Sevilla Dio Lumagod, 49, sister of Melinda, said she couldn’t comprehend the fate that befell her sister. She had thought of her sister suffering violence, though, as a result of the fights Melinda often had with Emmanuel.

Lumagod, who said she was the closest to her sister Melinda, said the stormy relationship between Melinda and her husband was not a secret to Melinda’s relatives here.

Melinda, said Lumagod, was very close to her family here and would come to visit every year, without Emmanuel.

At Cebu City wake, reality sinks in for girl

By Jhunnex Napallacan
Inquirer Visayas
9:42 pm | Thursday, October 20th, 2011

CEBU CITYâ€"It took just five minutes for the gruesome reality to sink in for 13-year-old Embrelaince Therjoy Ponce.

Embrelaince on Monday came face to face for the first time with the coffins bearing the remains of her mother, father and three siblings at a funeral home here a day after her father went on a rampage that he ended by taking his own life.

The girl, accompanied by relatives and social workers, first approached her mother’s coffin spending at least five minutes there before viewing the remains of the rest of her family, according to those who were at  St. Peter’s Funeral Home on Imus Street here where the bodies were brought.

Unfathomable grief

There was no other way for Embrelaince to express the unfathomable grief inside her except through ways that grief finds its way out for countless of others in a similar situationâ€"shed tears and cry in an anguish coming from depths no one could measure.

Embrelaince was the only one left in her family now after her father spared her from his rampage because, as relatives and close friends of the Ponces theorized, he loved her so much.

It is, however, difficult to determine what psychological state Embrelaince is in now, according to officials who had expressed concern over the tragedy’s impact on the girl, who is turning 14 in December.

Internet’s truth

Relatives initially tried to shield Embrelaince from the brutality of the fate that befell her family by telling her that while her mother, father and siblings were wounded, doctors were trying to keep them alive.

At the home of aunt Thelma Billones, however, what her relatives tried to hide from Embrelaince was laid out in the open by the Internet. At 4 p.m. on Sunday, according to family friend Yolanda Daan, Embrelaince turned the computer on at the Billones residence, connected to the Internet and found that what she had dreaded had come trueâ€"her entire family is gone.

Fit of rage

In a fit of rage that no one could understand yet, her father Emmanuel, a former seaman, shot his wife Melinda; daughters Elaine Grace, 26, and Heather Joy, 25; son Emlin Bridge, 18 and helper Anastacia Deñiega, 30, inside the family residence in Talisay City. The rampage ended with Emmanuel turning the gun on himself.

The Provincial Council for the Welfare of Children, headed by Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale, had expressed concern over what effects the tragedy would have on Embrelaince, how it would influence her growth as an adult or how she could be helped to deal with it.

Members of the council met on Monday at the vice governor’s office. It was attended by Daan, the Ponces’ family friend who first took Embrelaince in her care before turning over the girl to the Billones family.

The council, said Magpale, is waiting for a report from the Talisay City social worker who is handling the case of Embrelaince. Whether Embrelaince needs a psychologist, according to Magpale, would be known from the social worker’s report.

Murder victim fetched pal prior to death

Cebu Daily News
8:03 am | Thursday, October 20th, 2011

MINUTES before boarding her Manila flight, Alice Cabalan bid goodbye to her friend Melinda Ponce who drove her to the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) at 2 a.m. last Sunday.

The 53-year-old Cabalan said she had no idea that it would be her last meeting with her best friend.

But even before, Cabalan said Melinda told her about her troubles with her husband Emmanuel Ponce.

Melinda, her children Ellaine Grace, Heather Joy and Emlin Bridge and their maid were gunned down by her husband at their home in Palm Village Subdivision, barangay Tangke, Talisay City at 8 a.m. last Sunday.

Cabalan said it was she who convinced Melinda, a gym buddy, to transfer to Cebu. She said she met Melinda through Emmanuel.

“My husband is also a seaman. I was Emmanuel’s chaperon when he was courting Melinda,” Cabalan said.

A week before the massacre, Cabalan said Melinda asked her if she could stay at her home. She said Ellaine Grace later fetched her mother at her home.

Cabalan said she kept Melinda’s domestic problems to herself.

“I was close to her. She even asked me once to tend to her children since she had no maid at the time,” she said.

Cabalan said she took care of Embrelaince “Ember” Ponce, the youngest child and only survivor, when she was still a child.

In a phone interview, Cabalan said the relatives of Ember Ponce agreed to let the family be buried in Sorsogon.

But she said Ember decided to have her father buried in Poblacion, Talisay City.

Elsewhere, neighbors of the Ponce family claimed that they saw unusual happenings outside the family home.

Barangay tanod Roberto Bacus said they would often hear dogs howling late at night.

He said the neighbors also heard a telephone ring even if the line was disconnected.

A taxi was also spotted stopping by the house and opening a door with no one coming out of the vehicle.

Fr. Roy Cabradilla of Mary’s Little Children Community said it’s best for the neighbors to pray for the family.

SPO1 Mikie Espina of the investigator of the Talisay City police said they will also verify reports that Emmanuel used drugs.

He said Emmanuel’s nephew Paul Redula and the husband of slain maid Anastacia Deniega told them that Emmanuel used drugs.

Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) also took blood samples on the Ponce house. (Correspondents Rhea Ruth V. Rosell and Gabriel C. Bonjoc)

What are elementals?

By Cathy Yamsuan
Philippine Daily Inquirer
4:10 am | Monday, October 31st, 2011

Fr. Jose Francisco Syquia, director of the Archdiocese of Manila Office of Exorcism, says nature spirits and elementals like lamang lupa and engkanto are actually fallen angels or demons.

“Revelation 12:9 clearly said that after their defeat, Satan and the fallen angels were thrown down to earth. They reside in nature itself,” Syquia explains in his book “Exorcism: Encounters with the Paranormal and the Occult.”

Syquia also quotes Athanasius, early Church Father of the 4th century, who talked of “demons occupying springs or rivers or trees or stones (and) cheated men by deceptive appearances.”

The priest says well-known deliverance minister Francis MacNutt also warned that “evil spirits roam and influence the five areas of earth, air, fire, water and nature.”

Nature worship is nothing new in the Philippines. Natives were known to worship anitos or the spirits of the dead before the Spaniards arrived.

Spanish friars dismissed anito worship as devil worship and destroyed all objects and literature used for this purpose.

The Catholic Church tells the faithful that when a person dies, his soul can only go to any of the following: heaven (if one was pious), hell (if one continued to be unrepentant at the point of death) or purgatory (if one had not adequately atoned for his sins).

After death, the soul has no business wandering on earth and demanding that it be worshipped by surviving descendants.

The Church discourages the local tradition of sacrificing the blood of chickens at the site of houses or buildings that would be constructed.

This is because God does not demand such sacrifices or senseless favors. He is pleased when a person loves his neighbor.

The Church also disapproves of the recitation of “tabi-tabi po” and similar incantations when one approaches a tree or shrub especially at night.

“The Holy Angels would not feel slighted or become angry when a mortal who cannot see spirits could not acknowledge their presence. It is better if one recites the ‘Hail Mary’ if he feels uncomfortable because evil spirits are afraid of the Queen of Angels,” Syquia told the Inquirer in an interview in 2006.

“Our God is a God of love and mercy and does not seek vengeance for such imagined misdemeanors,” he said.

Snake in the trees

Tangi recalled the niece’s room was in total disarray. “There was stuff everywhere, it was so chaotic. She said that when she came in at night, she was always too tired to pick anything up,” the priest noted.

The businessman told Tangi that his niece used to be healthy, but she suddenly suffered a series of illnesses that doctors could not explain and that left her practically paralyzed.

Tangi suspects that someone else was staying in the room and whoever it was might have caused her disability. After blessing the room, he told the niece to clean up, put more lights and paint the place white.

The priest also visited the teenager’s house in an area that was well-isolated from other factory residences and that was encircled by old trees.

Old-timers claim a giant snake lives nearby but they do not dare kill it, believing “it is the real owner of the property.” The residents fear that the snake’s spirit might haunt them if they kill it.

Tangi did not see any giant snake in the boy’s house.

“But it was unusually hot inside. And as I was sprinkling holy water and my companions were reciting Marian prayers, I heard hissing sounds. It was hard to tell where they were coming from,” he said.

Spirits could strike again

Tangi said residents told him they had “eerie feelings” whenever they walk around the property. One old man told the priest that he normally saw a “lady in white” at night in the area.

The priest also stopped at the house of the businessman. He thought there were no evil spirits there. “It was airy because there were lots of windows.  It was well-lighted,” the priest remembered.

While Tangi had not heard again from the owner, he remained concerned.

“There are lots of trees in the property and there is also a brook where the residents catch fish from. It may be possible that elementals or nature spirits living in the trees or the water were responsible for the manifestations,” he said.

The priest fears these spirits can strike again.

Boy goes wild

Every now and then, the boy would mutter something incomprehensible but was generally subdued. But when Tangi raised the host during the Consecration, the boy went bananas, threw off those holding him, screamed at the priest, and spewed vomit.

“It gives me goose bumps just to remember what happened,” Tangi said.

After the Mass, the priest approached the boy and recited deliverance prayers, especially those addressed to St. Michael, the archangel who defeated Lucifer, and St. Gabriel, the Prince of the Heavenly Army tasked with leading angels in the final battle against evil spirits.

Tangi could not perform an exorcism because it requires permission from the bishop. Also, an exorcist priest and his prayer warriors, or assistants, would have to fast and recite special prayers for protection before they can face the possessed.

After Tangi and the locals prayed over the boy, the priest sprinkled holy water on him and anointed the boy with blessed oil.

“At that time, I felt it was not a really strong demon. After the anointing, the boy already smiled and began eating. I just hope that he would not have a relapse because when that happens, the retaliating demon usually becomes stronger,” Tangi noted.

Mummy in bed

Later, the priest was led to the businessman’s ailing niece. She was in crutches in a small, windowless room. He was shocked to see what he thought was a man wrapped in black bandage “like a mummy” lying on her bed.

“His neck was bent backward but his eyes were wide open and staring at me,” the priest recalled. “I looked back at my companions and apparently, they did not see it because they were not reacting,” Tangi said. He turned to the bed and the vision was gone.

“The room was very dark, there were absolutely no openings. And it felt very eerie just being there,” the priest said. Workers complain they feel “something unusual” whenever they are near the girl’s quarters.

Fr. Jose Francisco Syquia, in his book “Exorcism: Encounters with the Paranormal and the Occult,” notes that evil spirits prefer “areas which are smelly and dirty like toilets, garbage areas, and the like.”

Syquia, director of the Office of Exorcism of the Archdiocese of Manila, says dark rooms without blessed objects like that occupied by the girl attract sinister forces.

Close encounters with elementals

By Cathy Yamsuan
Philippine Daily Inquirer

The teenage boy had not eaten for days yet four grown men and his own mother could hardly subdue him as he reacted violently to the presence of Fr. Armand Tangi of the Society of St. Paul.

“He had menacing eyes, was screaming words I could not understand, and it seemed that he would spew vomit on me anytime. I was just waiting for it to happen,” the priest said, recalling a familiar scene in the movie “The Exorcist.”

The boy and his family live in a bucolic Central Luzon community, in a compound with a ladies’ accessories factory and residences of its owner and his workers. A clear brook runs through the leafy estate.

It was an idyllic place until strange sightings of a “white lady” were reported, the boy exhibited a bizarre behavior and the factory owner’s niece suddenly fell ill and became practically paralyzed.

The strange happenings, manifestations of so-called “elementals,” or nature spirits, gravitating in rivers and trees, prompted the businessman to call a psychic, who said the area used to be a Japanese garrison where beheadings occurred during World War II.

“I was told by the businessman that the psychic heard constant screams of terror. And that he also felt that there was also a lot of tension and chaos,” Tangi said.

Admitting he could not deal with the spirits, the psychic advised the businessman to call an exorcist-priest.

It was midmorning when the Makati-based Tangi arrived at the compound in early September. He was immediately taken to a kiosk to see the boy.

“He looked like a normal boy, of medium built and about 5’8” in height. But he looked at me in a very intimidating way. I was actually scared of him,” Tangi said.

The priest was convinced it was a case of demonic possession and decided to say Mass at the kiosk.

Is belief really an acceptable argument in an intellectual discourse? or should religion be well represented in the government? None of us will know until the RH Bill has come to a vote... or will it?

what else, then?  one can't argue or discuss one's side of an issue if one didn't believe in it.  we may or may not agree with such side, but one has to believe in something and make a stand for it, whether that belief is religious, political, or even self-directed.
