usa sa mga pari sa cebu nga among family friend, the brightest in class, hapit wa mapari.  gaduda na intawon siya sa una kun mopadayon ba siyag ordination.  he was gripped with guilt.  whether it was survivor's guilt or whatever guilt, wa na ko kahibawo.

on his way to cagayan de oro in a boat, naa siyay nakaistorya nga fellow passenger.  bisag unsa lang kuno ilang giistoryahan.  kalma kaayo sila; just two strangers who got to talk, both simple passengers in a ship who were comfortable in their anonymity.

gihuso sa iyang kaistorya ang iyang relo, unya gihatag niya, dayon ingon, "ikaw na lay bahalag pangadye para nako" or something like that, unya niambak diretso sa dagat.  gabii tong dako.  despite a search and rescue attempt by the ship (it was a superferry ship) up to daylight, wa na gyod makit-i ang tawo.  gilubatlubatan intawon ang ordinandus.

his words when he told me the story: i would be wondering for the rest of my life if i could have done something more... why i failed to see it coming... i could have held him tight... what kind of a priest would i be after that... etc.  namuypoy akong tuhod nga naminaw.  i knew i needn't tell him that it wasn't his fault.  my silence and understanding were my best answers, or so i hoped.

thankfully, nipadayon siya sa iyang ordination, which i was able to attend.  he is now one of the monsignors in cebu.  kana bitaw nga di obispo pero titled nag monsignor.

oh, yes, fr chic, di gyod nato maaninaw unsay sulod sa ulo ug kasingkasing sa mga ingon anang mag-suicide.  we can only pray for them and pray as well that we never have to go through the same tragedy involving those closest to us or even with our own selves.  it is this tragedy of committing the greatest of sins-- according to a priest-- the sin against the holy spirit.  in other words, despair.

No offense meant

In an interview, Topacio said he did not mean to offend anybody or muddle the issue when he made his declaration on national television.

“I just wanted to dispute the allegations that my client was planning to elude justice,” he said.

“As I have said before, I’m confident that my client would return home after his wife had been treated. I’m sure the former First Gentleman would not let me lose my balls,” Topacio said.

Gag statement

In a “gag statement” Topacio e-mailed to select reporters, Mike Arroyo said his lawyer’s testicles were “safe as my wife and I will definitely return to face the baseless charges hurled against us by the present administration.”

“I am a man myself. Therefore, I will not do any act or deed that will seriously jeopardize the health, safety and security of the testicles of any other man, let alone my lawyer,” said a portion of Mike Arroyo’s  statement.

He even dared President Aquino to “do likewise” and “remove one of his testicles” if his suspicion that the Arroyos would seek refuge abroad turned out to be wrong.

“President Aquino can do no less. Otherwise, he will violate the equal protection clause of the Constitution, which is an impeachable offense,” Mike Arroyo said.

“In this case, he will have to make one of the ‘hardest’ decisions in his political life: lose one of his balls, or face impeachment raps.”

With his newfound popularity, Topacio said he might organize a “philanthropic foundation based in Makati City.”

“We shall call it ‘Itlog Co., Makati,’” the lawyer said. (With reports from Cathy C. Yamsuan and Inquirer Research)

Left or right

A tweet from user Israel Buenaobra said: “The question is not whether the Arroyos will come back or not. It’s whether he’s giving up his left or right NUT?

“Please check if Topacio still has his testes intact. They may have been cut off already. Collateral insurance,” tweeted user ken_see iamkensee.

Real issue muddled

While most users made fun of Topacio’s statement and took it lightly, some lamented that it had muddled the real issue.

“It’s a sad day when a substantive constitutional issue like the right to travel can be overwhelmed by a lawyer’s media stunt,” said law professor Theodore Te.

@imcalledSweet tweeted: “This isn’t Iraq that one can literally bet his balls. Besides, we already have balut. We need justice, not #itlognitopacio.”

“Until now #itlognitopacio is still at the trending topic list. Enough of it please!” @joventots declared.

Even De Lima, who has been at the receiving end of criticisms from Topacio and Arroyo allies, could not help but be amused by the lawyer’s bet.

“It’s very amusing indeed. But maybe he can make another bet, not that one,” De Lima told reporters, chuckling.

In the Senate, a comedian-turned lawmaker came up with his own gag. “I hope and pray that in case that happens, Atty. (Ferdie) Topacio does not live to be a hundred years old,” Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III said playfully.

“Otherwise, he would be known as  ‘century egg,’” Sotto said. Or Attorney One Ball, a character in Sotto’s old television sitcom “Iskul Bukol.”

Cyber ballying

Professional blogger @HecklerForever said: “BREAKING NEWS: Atty. Ferdie Topacio’s balls are crying foul. They claim they’re both victims of ‘Cyber BALLying.’”

“His balls are of no use to him, and so he begs. Please take them,” @kawenMD said.

User Sharmaine Carreon said: “Why so confident about the Arroyos? I’m sure your balls are shrinking now.”

Journalist Carlos Conde said on Twitter, “An important tip: Before you retain a lawyer, make sure he’s got them twos because that means he’s never lost a case.”

“Will the people of Pateros be willing to do the honor of cutting Topacio’s balls out?” said user Petronilo Mendoza.

Arroyo lawyer butt of ‘cyber BALLying’

By Marlon Ramos

His balls are definitely on fire.

Shortly after he vowed to have himself castrated should his client, former First Gentleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo, fail to return home, lawyer Ferdinand Topacio’s offer became the hot topic in various social networking sites.

The hashtag #itlognitopacio had been trending in the local topic of microblogging site Twitter since Wednesday, generating thousands of different reactions from Filipino users worldwide.

“Let GMA (former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo) go as SC ordered. But pls guard Topacio’s (testicles). National interest demands it. LOL,” tweeted veteran singer-songwriter Jim Paredes.

“I have heard of (people) giving an arm and a leg for a loved one. But a testicular offer for insurance is quite unique,” Paredes added.

The Supreme Court has issued an order permitting the Arroyos to travel overseas but Justice Secretary Leila de Lima blocked their planned departure on Tuesday.

Political Party in India Launching Line of Cow Urine Soft Drinks

Nothing says refreshing like an ice cold soda. I don’t think urine would have the same effect, but India apparently never got the memo. The Cow Protection Department of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is working on a soft drink made out of cow urine.

Known in Sanskrit as “gau jal,” which means “cow water,” the soft drink should be available for human consumption by the end of the year. According to Om Prakash, the head of the department in charge of this beverage monstrosity, the drink will actually be “tasty.”

Why make a soft drink out of urine? Well, apparently the RSS is seeking to rid India of all foreign influence and promote “Hindu-ness.”

According to the RSS, cow urine can be used to treat a variety of ailments, such as liver disease and cancer. In fact, Prakash feels that despite the enormous advertising budgets of popular soft drinks Coca-Cola and Pepsi, his cow urine concoction will be able to hold its own due to being “good for mankind.”

Prakesh also says that the drink will be cheap for consumers, though no price has been set.

The RSS, along with its many offshoots, has been accused of atrocities in the past, such as the killing of 67 Christians in Orissa last year, as well as the assaulting of numerous women in a pub in Mangalore.

Now they’re serving us pee.

'Alien corpse' kept in fridge

AEST 07:00, Wed Nov 16 2011

A Russian woman claims to have kept an "alien corpse" in her fridge for two years after retrieving it from the smoking wreckage of a UFO crash site near her home in 2009.

Marta Yegorovnam claims the 60cm-long, frog-like creature was confiscated by two men who said they were from the Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, according to the website Unexplained Mysteries.

It's the latest in a string of UFO claims from Russia this year following footage in August purporting to show a glowing craft and five aliens walking around in the Siberian snow.

Miriam on NAIA standoff: I feel like slashing my wrists

MANILA, Philippines - The brouhaha caused by the standoff at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Tuesday night has brought out the most colorful words from the parties involved.
Besides the “cut my ball off” statement from lawyer Ferdinand Topacio, another critic is having a different take on the matter.

In an interview with reporters, Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago said: “I feel grief-stricken and I feel like slashing my wrists.”

She is referring to the decision of the government to bar former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and husband Mike from leaving despite an order from the Supreme Court.

“That’s not what we were taught for four years in law school,” Santiago said, fuming.

She told defiant Justice Secretary Leila de Lima: “Follow the law even if you hate it.”

De Lima insists the SC has to resolve first their motion for reconsideration on the temporary restraining order. With a report from Ruby Tayag, radio dzMM

De Lima orders officials to bar Arroyos from leaving the country

AMITA O. LEGASPI, GMA News
11/15/2011 | 06:22 PM

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima on Tuesday ordered Immigration and airport authorities to bar former President Gloria-Macapagal Arroyo and her husband, Jose Miguel, from leaving the country until the petition they have filed against the watch list order against them has been resolved by the Justice Department.

At a Malacañang briefing, De Lima told the media the DOJ (Department of Justice) has yet to receive an official notice of the temporary restraining order supposedly issued by the Supreme Court earlier in the day.

De Lima said Government’s position on the matter is that upon filing of the motion for reconsideration for lifting the TRO, the order stays in place until the issue has been resolved.

“The reported TRO has not been substantiated to exist pending the receipt by the respondents through the Office of the Solicitor General. Hence, the status quo, which is the existence of the watch list order against the Arroyos remains," she said.

With this, she ordered the Bureau of Immigration and requested the Transportation and Communication Secretary Manuel Roxas II to direct the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) management and personnel to enforce the watch list order, which bars the Arroyo couple from leaving the country.

All law enforcement officers are also directed to assist the authorities in carrying out the order, noted the Justice chief.

“They are also directed to report any attempt by the Arroyo couple and their entourage to board any international, commercial, or chartered flights to whatever destination outside of the Philippines," she said. â€" VS, GMA News

Arroyos have booked flight to Singapore

By Gil C. Cabacungan Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer
5:42 pm | Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her husband Jose Miguel Arroyo have booked a flight to Singapore after the Supreme Court temporarily stopped the Aquino government from preventing her trips abroad while she was being investigated for plunder and election sabotage complaints.

A source told the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the Arroyos booked seats in the Philippine Airlines Flight PR505 scheduled for 7:35 p.m. on Tuesday night.

The Supreme Court ruled 8-5 in issuing a TRO on the watch-list order of the Department of Justice, which empowered the justice secretary to decide whether to allow Arroyo to leave or not.

Arroyo has asked the DOJ to allow her to leave for several countries so she could get treatment for her bone ailment.

The DOJ, however, said she was a flight risk.  But it has not concluded the preliminary investigation of the various plunder and election sabotage suits against her.

The country’s Constitution, however, provides that a person who has not been charged in court cannot be stopped from travelling unless the person is a threat to national security, public safety or health.

'Infidelity rumors affecting Pacquiao's performance'

Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. REUTERS

MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao pulled out a controversial razor-thin triumph against Juan Manuel Marquez in their trilogy bout on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) because relationship rumors are starting to take a toll on the Filipino boxer's performance, a veteran sports analyst said on Monday.

Ronnie Nathanielsz believes that controversies linking Pacquiao to different women are among the reasons why the eight-division world champion nearly lost the match against Marquez.

"The fact remains that it must be a distraction if it's true. Okay, even if it's not true, the publicity must be bothering him, must be getting him down and it also hurts the relationship with Jinkee," Nathanielsz said in an interview on ANC's "Headstart."

"He must settle all these issues because... true or false it puts pressure on him. It puts pressure on his wife and that's not good for their relationship," he added.

Nathanielsz said that aside from infidelity rumors, other commitments such as weekly shows are also starting to affect Pacquiao's boxing performance.

"He's showing signs of decline and it's not because of lack of training... It's because of so many extraneous activities he's involved in," he said.

"His congressional duties, his late nights, his pool (games), his endorsements, his show, that's a debilitating thing."

Pacquiao is currently the congressman of Sarangani province.

Before his fight against Marquez, Pacquiao denied a report saying that his wife, Jinkee, has filed for annulment.

Arroyos to leave PH as soon as possible

By Gil C. Cabacungan

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo said Tuesday he and his wife, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, will leave the country as soon as possible and will try to get tickets as early as within the day.

He said they will be accompanied by a nurse and two aides.

Arroyo made the pronouncement shortly after the Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order against a Department of Justice watch list order that barred him and his wife from traveling abroad to seek medical treatment for her bone ailment.

SC allows Arroyo to travel abroadâ€"official

By Marlon Ramos
Philippine Daily Inquirer
1:21 pm | Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"The Supreme Court has allowed former President Gloria-Macapagal Arroyo to travel abroad to seek medical treatment for her bone ailment.

During its en banc session on Tuesday, the tribunal voted 8-5 in issuing a temporary restraining order against the Department of Justice from enforcing the watchlist order it issued against Arroyo and her husband Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo on October 28.

A senior court official said the magistrates dismissed the government’s petition asking the high court to defer the issuance of a TRO pending the filing of the DOJ’s comment on the issue.

The official said President Aquino’s three appointees â€" Associate Justices Ma. Lourdes Sereno, Bienvenido Reyes and Estelita Perlas-Bernabe â€" voted against granting Arroyo’s petition.

They were joined by Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio and Jose Mendoza.

yes.  who knows if she's a witch doctor after all.  i can't imagine lady doctors with such untidy hair.

#37547
there are just too many layers to the issue that it becomes difficult to see the trees from the forest.

some bishops believe she should be allowed.  fine.  i believe them.  p-noy's own father was in the same situation, and he was allowed to go.  but look what happened when he tried to come back.  it was a different time though and the senior aquino posed a political threat to marcos even after he was supposedly duly judged guilty as charged by a military court.

former president gma hasn't passed through a court's judgment as yet. nor is she a political threat to pnoy who's not up for reelection anyway.  unfortunately, gma had lost credibility with her history of doublespeak, rendering her difficult to trust to come back and face the court.

here lies the utter difference; marcos wanted the senior aquino out of the country, the junior aquino wants (as the news have it) gma in the country.  the former wasn't trusted when he came back, the latter isn't trusted to come back.

why go abroad for treatment when 100 local doctors claim they can treat gma here?  of course, she has every right to choose her own doctors and place of treatment just as she has every right to travel.  which makes one wonder about the choices she makes, from 'hello, garci' to coddling the ampatuans when it was politically expedient.

but if anything happens to her here, she just might be pnoy's political downfall.  we may suddenly have an unexpected martyr in our national consciousness.

it looks like the devil and the deep blue sea for our president.  i might as well look forward to the supreme court's decision.

MANILA, Philippines â€"Boxing experts had different perspectives on how the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez fight [yesterday] should have ended.

While the Filipinos celebrated after ring announcer Michael Buffer announced a majority decision victory by Pacquaio, some American writers saw it should have ended with either a Marquez win or a draw instead.

Chris Mannix, Sports Illustrated's staff writer on boxing and basketball, scored it 116-112 for 'Dinamita' after giving six rounds to him and just four to Pacman.

"Highway robbery," said Mannix on his Twitter account @ChrisMannixSI where he had a profile pic with Pacquiao in one of the press conferences he attended with the Sarangani Congressman.

Dan Rafael, espn.com boxing writer and sports commentator, and Kevin Iole, who writes boxing and mixed martial arts column for Yahoo, for their part, thought the bout should have ended in a draw.

"Here we go again. Terrfic fight and I gave rd 12 to Marquez. 114-114," said the bearded Rafael also on his Twitter @danrafaelespn.

"I give Marquez the 12th. I have it ... a draw. 114-114, six rounds apiece," twitted Iole on @KevinI.

ESPN sportswriter Chris Broussard, writing boxing as well as developments on the NBA lockout, for his part, thought it was a standoff or a Marquez triumph.

"Great fight. Tough to call. I'd say a Draw or Marquez," he said on @Chris Boussard.

Recah Trinidad, one of the hard-hitting sports columnists in the country today who is currently in Indonesia covering the ongoing 26th Southeast Asian Games, was equally blunt in his assessments.

"Objectively, panalo si Marquez, magalit na sila kung magalit (I don't care if they get angry with me but I think Marquez won)," Trinidad replied when interviewd via phone by a popular AM radio station.

"He (Pacquiao) was so predictable, maybe he has no more hunger and drive just like before," he said.

Pacquiao escapes with controversial win

By Dino Paulo Maragay
(The Philippine Star) Updated November 13, 2011 02:11 PM

MANILA, Philippines - WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao retained his title with a questionable majority decision victory over nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas today.

The three judges had scores of 114-114, and 115-113 and 116-112 for Pacquiao, who had himself on the receiving end of Marquez's brilliant counters throughout the fight.

Philstar.com had it 115-113 for Marquez, who once again left the ring in frustration after a night on which he appeared to have solved the Pacquiao puzzle.

"It's clear that I won the fight," Pacquiao said as he was met by jeers from the crowd.

Marquez displayed his fine counterpunching skills to frustrate Pacquiao for most of the fight.

The Filipino icon occassionally landed several left straights to his foe's head and body, but Marquez always came back with a response.

Asked if he would grant Marquez another crack at him, Pacquiao said: "It's up to my promoter. I will fight anyone, anytime."

Pacquiao wins by majority decision over Marquez

By Kamal Wallace, CNN
November 13, 2011 -- Updated 0631 GMT (1431 HKT)

(CNN) -- Manny Pacquiao defended his WBO welterweight title at the sold-out MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, defeating Juan Manuel Marquez by majority decision.

Both fighters went toe-to-toe throughout the 12-round fight Saturday night with neither getting knocked down on the canvas.

The fight went down to the Nevada judges' scorecards with Dave Moretti scoring it 115-113, Robert Hoyle 114-114 and Glenn Trowbridge 116-112.

After the decision, Marquez left the ring, apparently upset by the ruling.

This was the third clash between Pacquiao and Marquez. The first bout in 2004 was scored a draw, while Pacquiao won a controversial split decision in the rematch four years later.

In prior meetings, Pacquiao scored four knockdowns yet Marquez won the greater number of rounds.

To further stoke the fire between the fighters, in the days leading up to Saturday's fight, Marquez sported a T-shirt saying, "Marquez beat Pacquiao twice!!"

Pacquiao, who entered the bout having won 10 titles at eight weight divisions, is considered arguably the world's best pound-for-pound boxer.

Now that Pacquiao has defeated Marquez, the next big fight most boxing fans are eagerly waiting for is a potential multimillion-dollar payday against Floyd Mayweather Jr., the other superstar of his boxing generation.

Both fighters have openly said they want to face each other, but each time they try to consummate the fight, negotiations break down over blood and urine testing.

Filipino photogs top Apec contest

By Jerry E. Esplanada
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Thursday, November 10th, 2011

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Two Filipino lensmen have topped the 2011 photo contest  sponsored by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the Department of Foreign Affairs  announced Thursday.

The DFA said  Reynaldo C. Mondez and Romeo B. Doneza  placed first and second in the competition with their entries titled “Solar Energy Panels” and “World Wide,” respectively.

Third prize went to Wong Chi-keung of Hong Kong for his entry “No Boundary Network.”

The DFA said in a press statement that Mondez and Doneza’s photos “stood out among the 204 submitted by 95 photographers from 17 Apec member-countries to best reflect Apec’s priorities of strengthening regional economic integration, advancing regulatory cooperation and promoting green growth.”

For receiving over 4,600 online votes, Mondez also bagged the Apec photo contest’s “Popular Choice Award.”

Mondez is a retired photographer of the National Housing Authority. He currently runs a small wedding photography business with his son in Metro Manila.

Two other Filipino photographersâ€"Ellen de Leon and Robert Anton Pimentelâ€" made it to the top 10  finalists with their entries “Winds of Change” and “Economic Harmony,” respectively.

Their pictures “stood out, based on the criteria for judging, which included the quality of the photograph, composition, overall impact, and artistic merit, as well as how it represents the three Apec themes.”

The contest judges were Eric Baradat, Agence France-Presse photo editor-in-chief-worldwide; Mladen Antonov, AFP photo editor-in-chief-North America; Getty Images photographer Palani Mohan; Apec Secretariat executive director Mohamad Noor; and US-Apec senior official Kurt Tong.

In a news release, the Apec secretariat quoted Mondez as saying he was “very happy and truly humbled by this experience.”

He had called his winning photo of children playing basketball next to a hut and a solar energy panel a “symbol of hope for a sustainable future, even in the most remote parts of the Philippines.”

Monde’s photo was taken in a “rural village in Rizal province.”

“What I am trying to convey to the world is to make renewable energy more accessible to everyone by first lowering the cost of technology. Through my photo, I hope to reach out to the decision-makers who are involved in renewable energy,” he added.

Toronto breaks up ‘brokeback’ penguins

Associated Press

TORONTOâ€"Toronto’s zoo is splitting up a pair of male penguins whose affection has drawn headlines and jokes about “Brokeback Iceberg.”

The African penguins have shared the nest they built since coming to the zoo about a year ago. But since the penguins are an endangered species, zoo officials plan to separate Pedro and Buddy so they can mate with females.

The pair has what’s known as a “social bond,” but it’s not necessarily sexual, Tom Mason, the zoo’s curator of birds and invertebrates, said on Wednesday.

The zoo has received hundreds of calls about the pair. Mason said he even got a call from someone claiming to represent a group called the Canadian Society for Gay Animals. Such a group could not immediately be located.

The story of the same-sex pair has gone viral online, leading to cheeky YouTube videos.

Late-night TV comics have jumped into the icy waters of penguin passion. Jimmy Kimmel riffed on the story during a recent monologue, calling it “Brokeback Iceberg” and claiming the lovebirds were spotted at a Lady Gaga concert.

But it’s really not the way it looks, Mason said.

“Penguins are so social they need that … company. And the group they came from was a bachelor group waiting for a chance to be paired up with females,” said Mason, who received the penguins from a US zoo earlier this year.

“They had paired up there, they came to us already paired, and it’s our job to be matchmakers to get them to go with some females.”

Buddy, who is 21, had a female partner for 10 years and produced some offspring but his partner died, Mason said.

Pedro, 10, has yet to produce offspring.

La Teresa (1851) certainly precedes other claims, such as Ninay (1880), Noli Me Tangere (1887), and El Filibusterismo (1891).

a little parsing though may not be out of order...

what's a filipino novel?  is it a novel written by a filipino using a foreign language or a novel written in a local language by a foreigner who happened to be assigned in the philippines?

considering the period, would it be safe to presume that fr. antonio obeda was a spanish agustinian recollect?  (a google search did not produce such a fraile, but then i'm not good at google search...)

meanwhile, other academics say that it is pedro paterno's ninay that can lay claim to being the first filipino novel.

First Novel

According to literary expert Bievenido Lumbera, the first Filipino novel was Ninay, written by Pedro Paterno and published in 1880. Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere was published in 1887 while El Filibusterismo came out of the press in 1891. The first English novel written in English by a Filipino was Zoilo Galang's A Child of Sorrow. (http://www.txtmania.com/trivia/first.php)

But if Rizal's novels are political, the novel Ninay (1885) by Pedro Paterno is largely cultural and is considered the first Filipino novel.  Although Paterno's Ninay gave impetus to other novelists like Jesus Balmori and Antonio M. Abad to continue writing in Spanish, this did not flourish.

Other Filipino writers published the essay and short fiction in Spanish in La Vanguardia, El Debate, Renacimiento Filipino, and Nueva Era. The more notable essayists and fictionists were Claro M. Recto, Teodoro M. Kalaw, Epifanio de los Reyes, Vicente Sotto, Trinidad Pardo de Tavera, Rafael Palma, Enrique Laygo (Caretas or Masks, 1925) and Balmori who mastered the prosa romantica or romantic prose. -excerpts from The Literary Forms in Philippine Literature, by Christine F. Godinez-Ortega (http://www.seasite.niu.edu/Tagalog/Literature/literary_forms_in_philippine_lit.htm)

n.b.  please note the discrepancy in years ninay was published, i.e., 1880, 1885.

Positive side

But for the rest, exuding positive energy may be best on Friday or on any other day.

“Let’s look at the positive side. This is a rare occurrence, there is existence of good vibrations everywhere,” Alejandro said.

“Let’s just consider it as a sort of nudge that the world has reached the 11th hour and that we should start to improve. Do good for others, do good for the environment, get real,” he added.

Cultural background

“In other words, the meaning feeds upon the cultural background or what a person is into. The meaning could be spiritual or physical, depending on the subconscious or culture of a person,” Sorita said.

Chat Alejandro, a feng shui consultant, agrees with Sorita’s reading.

“People try to find something to rely on based on their insecurities and uncertainties. They find meaning in patterns,” Alejandro said.

“But there is no alignment of planets… Perhaps there are just some people who take advantage of the date for its commercial value [their services or goods],” he said.

The date may, however, carry good vibes for those born on November 11, Alejandro said. The synchronicity may bring them “vibratory compatibility.”

Attaching meaning

The last decade saw dates with repetitive digits from 01-01-01 to 10-10-10, stirring a search for meaning.

Sociologist Clifford Sorita attributes this to apophenia, a phenomenon in which people attach meaning to random patterns.

“It’s a rare occurrence. It opens, therefore, a wide range of discussions. The problem is, and psychologists will tell you, that when the discussion starts, it creates a situation attributed to apophenia, where people try to find meaning in something random,” Sorita said.

Apophenia results in interpretations largely based on culture and context, he said.

“And here, our tendency is to base our interpretations on the cosmic. For instance, in numerology, they say 11, being between 10 and 12, is an imperfect, odd number that represents evil. But for gamblers, for instance, the date could be lucky, especially for those who play Blackjack,” the sociologist said.

11-11-11 unusual date but it’s only apophenia

By Tarra Quismundo
Philippine Daily Inquirer

The rare alignment of digits tomorrow may stir anxiety among the superstitious, but 11-11-11 (November 11, 2011) may well be as flat as the number.

The once-in-a-century synchronicity of 11s will see a rather ordinary day, according to science and geomancy, but not for those who decided to make the day special by setting weddings, project launches and other special events.

“The date just sounds nice but I can’t see any meaning to it,” said Dario de la Cruz, chief of the weather bureau’s Space Sciences and Astronomy Section.

“It’s an ordinary date. I can’t think of anything it might mean, even in superstition,” De la Cruz said.

By Friday, the moon would be rising to its fullest, the stars would be where they should be, and Earth would have counted two days since its closest encounter with an asteroidâ€"the 400-meter-wide 2005 YU55.

But no, the date of three 11s will not spell a special cosmic event, De la Cruz said.  The sky may even be cloudy.

“We have not received any calls asking about 11-11-11.  The calls we’re getting are about the asteroid,” he said in reference to YU55’s fly-by that would have been seen past 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Apophenia (uh-pof-nee-uh; noun) is the experience of seeing meaningful patterns or connections in random or meaningless data.

The term was coined in 1958 by Klaus Conrad, who defined it as the "unmotivated seeing of connections" accompanied by a "specific experience of an abnormal meaningfulness", but it has come to represent the human tendency to seek patterns in random nature in general, as with gambling, paranormal phenomena, religion, and even attempts at scientific observation. Why fingernails-on-a-chalkboard is the worst sound in the world

By Melissa Dahl

Screeeeeeeech. Even imagining the sound of a person's fingernails scraping down a chalkboard is horrible. Now, new research helps suggest why the noise is such a special kind of awful.

The frequency of the screechy, scratchy sound ranges between 2000 Hz and 4000 -- and to your ear canal, this is the zone of terror, where the human ear is most sensitive. "Some frequencies are amplified due to the anatomy of the ear canal," write musicologists Christoph Reuter, of the University of Vienna, and Michael Oehler, of the Macromedia University for Media and Communication in Cologne, Germany. In other words: Blame the shape of your ear.

In Reuter's and Oehler's study, they played two unpleasant sounds -- fingernails on a chalkboard and squeaking chalk on a slate -- but before doing so, they told half of their participants that they'd be hearing contemporary music. The other half knew the horror that was coming. Both groups reacted physically to the sounds, which induced a galvanic skin response -- a change in the skin's electrical activity that is often triggered by fright and can be measured, like a polygraph test. Those who thought they were listening to contemporary music judged the sound as slightly less unpleasant -- but they still didn't like it, suggesting psychology plays a role in what makes the noise so noxious.

Reuter and Oehler presented their finding this week at the Acoustical Society of America meeting.

Feeling uncomfortable after all this fingernails-on-chalkboard talk? Researchers actually proved in a 1986 study just thinking about nails-on-a-chalkboard can evoke the same psychological reaction as actually hearing the horrible sound.

Boy sells kidney for iPad 2

By Rosa Golijan

A Chinese teenager recently broke his mother's heart when he revealed that he'd undergone a risky surgery to remove and sell his kidney â€" in order to purchase an iPad 2.

The Telegraph reports that the 17-year-old decided to partake in the cash-for-kidney exchange after seeing an online advertisement:

I wanted to buy an iPad 2, but I didn't have the money. [...] When I surfed the internet I found an advert posted online by agent saying they were able to pay RMB20,000 [$3,085] to buy a kidney.

The boy proceeded to follow the instructions in the ad, negotiated a fee with the agent and his partners, and traveled to the city of Chenzhou in the Hunan Province. His kidney was removed at a local hospital, and he was discharged after three days. He was paid about $3,400 for the procedure.

With that kind of money in his pocket, the boy went on a shopping spree. He purchased the iPad 2 he coveted, along with other electronics and headed home:

"When he came back, he had a laptop and a new Apple handset," his mother, identified as Miss Liu, told [a local news station], showing off the livid red scar where her son's kidney was removed, "I wanted to know how he had got so much money and he finally confessed that he had sold one of his kidneys."

But everything didn't go so smoothly: The boy suffered medical complications as a result of the surgery. He and his mother reached out to local authorities and attempted to contact the agents who'd arranged the procedure, but they had little luck:

The mother took the son back to Chenzhou to report the crime to the police, however, the mobiles of the three agents that Zheng had contacted were all switched off.

The hospital, which admitted contracting out its urology department to a private businessman, denied any knowledge of the surgery.
