Retita and Calma
#37428
Rob, not kill

Retita said she met Calma through a social networking site in 2009 and she was the one who left the gate of their house open so Calma and his accomplices could enter. She said their affair started late last year.

“We had no intention to kill him, but just to rob him. It’s my companion who shot him dead,” Calma said.

He refused to name the gunman, saying he fears reprisal because his companion serves as a politician’s bodyguard. Investigators, however, identified the alleged gunman as Ricardo Magat, a resident of Bulacan.

Robbery with homicide charges were filed Monday against Retita, Calma and Magat with city prosecutor Nimfa Gallo, who recommended that they not be granted bail.

A likely story

Retita initially said Martinez was sleeping in their bedroom while she and their four-year-old daughter were with his niece, Kimberly, watching television in an adjoining bedroom when men wearing bonnets attacked.

The “robbers” spray-painted the living room wall, calling the victim’s elder sister, who was in the United States at the time, a “swindler.” They fled with Martinez’s car, which they later abandoned in La Loma, Quezon City.

Soriano said they suspected Retita “must have known something” about the attack since investigators found no signs of forced entry at the crime scene.

Martinez’s family, who own a money-lending firm, offered a P200,000 reward for the arrest of his killers. An informant provided Calma’s name after seeing his photo in the news.

Soriano and his team tracked Calma from his house in Bulacan to Cebu City and persuaded him to surrender.

MANILA, Philippines - A woman and her lover admitted yesterday to killing her partner, a financial consultant, in Caloocan City three months ago.

Ma. Cecilia Retita, 27, surrendered to Caloocan police chief Senior Superintendent Jude Santos on Aug. 13 after her lover, sales agent Joselito Calma, gave himself up to Chief Inspector Rodrigo Soriano, city police investigation chief, on Aug. 10.

“The suspects claimed they only intended to rob (Jose Martinez Jr.) but the way we see it is they wanted Martinez dead because of their illicit affair,” Soriano told The STAR yesterday.

Martinez, 42, was shot dead in his house at GSIS Subdivision in Barangay Talipapa at around 2 a.m. on May 13. Investigators earlier said Martinez’s killers took P100,000, 13 land titles, assorted jewelry, mobile phones, and the victim’s 9mm and .45 caliber pistols.

In her sworn affidavit, Baran cited incidents on July 2010 and June 2011 when Analiza Marzan allegedly tried to kill her. In the first incident, Analiza stabbed her in the arm with a pair of scissors while she was doing the laundry inside the toilet. Analiza tried to strangle her in the second incident while saying: "Why are you taking so long to die?"

Analiza only let go of her when Reynold intervened by asking his wife: "Do you really want to kill her? Where would you put her (body)?"

Baran also said she was detained inside the house so people would not see her. From April last year to April of this year, she was repeatedly punched in the eyes almost everyday. Her right eye is now totally blind, while the left eye is partially blind.

After she went blind, the couple then decided to let her go home. They said she was useless and could no longer be of any help. She was allowed to see her family last May but they warned her not to talk about her ordeal.

Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) Chief Atty. Persida Rueda-Acosta. said that they are planning to file eight counts of serious physical injuries and frustrated murder against the couple.

"She was treated like an animal," Acosta noted.

At an early age of 16, Bonita Baran left her hometown in Catanduanes to work as a house maid in Quezon City. But her aim to find a better life in the city led to a painful fate.

A wheelchair-bound Baran, accompanied by her mother Erlinda and sister Olivia, went to the office of Assistant City Prosecutor Irene Resurreccion to sue her employers Reynold and Analiza Marzan of Visayas Avenue for attempted murder, physical injuries, and serious illegal detention.

Since the couple hired her in 2007, Baran said she had been wounded with a knife, struck in the head with hard objects until she bled, punched in the eyes, singed with a flat iron, and force-fed with dead cockroaches.

Baran sustained serious injuries and bruises all over her body due to alleged repeated beating and hitting. She also has deformed ear and lips, after her female employer battered it with a figurine. One of her teeth had been chipped. She had many bald spots on her scalp.

Lots of research

“In the seventies, they did not have the capacity to diagnose it the way they did when my child was born in 2000. My son… had a hole in his heart and large kidneys, cleft lip and cleft palate, and was perceived to be deaf and blind. But it had nothing to do with contraceptives,” Cayetano said.

She said she had done a lot of research but saw no relationship between child disabilities and the use of contraceptive pills.

“There is no well-founded belief, there is no grounded research that shows that children with disabilitiesâ€"and I put this on record in the Senate during the interpellation with Senator [Lito] Lapid, and again, I also commiserate with him, because I also lost a childâ€"there is no evidence that shows that link,” Cayetano said.

“All the issues that Senator Sotto raised have been settled in the previous interpellation,” she said. With reports from Norman Bordadora, Katherine Evangelista, INQUIRER.net

Sympathy for Sotto

“Is she implying that I’m lying about the death of my son?  If Doctor Cabral is challenging me then I am ready to declare war,” Sotto said in a text message.

“Her reaction speaks more about her more than about me.  Will she lie if she lost a child? She’s too callous and insensitive,” he added.

Sotto asked Cabral to read “The Greatest Experiment Ever Performed On Women” by Barbara Seaman that mentioned studies proving that mothers who got pregnant while on the pill “have more abnormal children (with) lower I.Q.”

Sen. Pia Cayetano, principal author of the RH bill, told reporters on Tuesday she sympathized with Sotto.

Cayetano said she wasn’t on contraceptives when she gave birth to her son who was later diagnosed with a chromosomal disorder.

Sotto taunts ex-DOH chief: You’re callous, insensitive
By Cathy C. Yamsuan
Philippine Daily Inquirer
2:50 am | Wednesday, August 15th, 2012

Senate Majority Leader Vicente “Tito” Sotto III on Tuesday described as callous and insensitive former Health Secretary Esperanza Cabral’s challenge for him to produce the death certificate of his son.

Cabral issued the dare a day after Sotto revealed in the first part of a turno en contra speech on the reproductive health (RH) bill that his firstborn, a son named Vincent Paul lived for only five months because his wife Helen took contraceptive pills but still got pregnant.

Sotto said a doctor later confirmed that the pills that Helen had taken caused Vincent to be born with a weak heart that required daily blood transfusions.

Cabral sent the Inquirer a copy of her reaction to Sotto’s disclosure. She noted that Helen’s obstetrician, Dr. Carmen Enverga-Santos, died many years ago and “cannot confirm or belie” the senator’s claim.

“However, an inspection of the hospital records and death certificate of Vincent Paul may help show the real cause of his death. I hope the good senator will make these public,” Cabral said.

She stressed that artificial methods of birth control including condoms, contraceptives and IUDs “have not been shown by scientific methods to cause ‘weak hearts’ in babies any more than brushing or not brushing your teeth in the morning has been shown to cause ‘weak hearts’ in babies.”

Pork as bait

In a forum on Tuesday, CBCP president Jose Palma said there were reports that the administration dangled the pork barrel to lawmakers to gain their support.

He warned the administration against using the pork barrel to get the votes for the bill.

“This is owned by the people,” he said. “It should be given whether you are pro or anti-RH bill.”

Also Tuesday, an 11-page declaration signed by 160 faculty members of Ateneo de Manila University was released to reporters.

It called on lawmakers to “muster the courage and wisdom to vote (for the RH bill), not on the basis of vested interests, but in the service of the Filipino people and especially the poor from whom they derive and to whom they owe their mandate.”

“We believe that the key principles of the RH bill are compatible with core principles of Catholic social teaching, such as the sanctity of human life, dignity of the human person, the preferential option for the poor, integral human development, human rights, and the primacy of conscience,” the paper said. With reports from Jeannette I. Andrade, Leila B. Salaverria and Christian V. Esguerra

When no one was looking

The CBCP said the move was “remarkable in its stealth and swiftness.”

“It came a full day too soon, just when no one was looking,” it said, referring to the preoccupation with the monsoon flooding.

“We are dismayed by the display of naked power. We lament the unilateral disregard of prior agreement in the pursuit of selfish goals. We detest the unbridled resort to foul tactics.”

The CBCP also called pro-RH bill legislators as “schemers” and described Mr. Aquino as an “intrusive” President. The CBCP said Aquino’s hand was clearly seen in the House, given the haste at which the bill was deliberated.

The prelates said the tactics used by the administration were “reminiscent of the events leading to the impeachment proceedings” against Corona, who was later removed.

Gifts denounced

“Of course not all our lawmakers are Catholics. But I appeal to Muslim legislators to accept this image of the woman they also look up highly in the Holy Book. To others, please, do not be offended but feel free to return the gift to us. This is just a sign of our assurance of prayers that Congress will do what is truly right,” Arguelles said in his letter.

Malabon Rep. Josephine Lacson-Noel on Tuesday said that she and other lawmakers were surprised by Arguelles’ gifts, which were ostensibly meant to sway their stand on the RH bill.

She said all the lawmakers received the gifts, including her husband, An-Waray Rep. Florencio Noel, who is opposed to the RH bill, and those belonging to other religious groups.

Pangasinan Rep. Kimi Cojuangco said she would display her gift in her office “as a reminder of my resolve to help pass the RH bill so that Filipino women, just like the Virgin Mary, will be given a better chance for a better life.”

Diwa Rep. Emmiline Aglipay, who received a pendant with an engraved image of the Virgin Mary, said her support for the bill was not about personal beliefs but about the obligations of the state.

“I am a Catholic congresswoman not a congresswoman of the Catholic Church,” Aglipay said in a text message.

Akbayan Rep. Walden Bello said: “I’m returning it, like I would return a monetary bribe. What does Arguelles think this isâ€"the Middle Ages, when the Church could buy souls with indulgences?”

The CBCP, which declined to comment on the bill last week to focus on helping the flood victims, blasted the Aquino administration and its allies for abruptly ending the debates on Aug. 6, a day ahead of schedule.

Lack of quorum

The lack of quorum prevented the House from starting the period of amendments Tuesday. “If there are no people, it means they have no support,” Parañaque Rep. Roilo Golez said of the proponents of the measure.

Arguelles had criticized President Aquino’s endorsement of the RH bill as “selective ‘matuwid na daan (straight path)’ program” and his push for Congress to speed up action on the measure as a “bad omen.”

“Aquino declared an open war, a head-on collision against us and against the Catholic Church. So terrible, so blatantly Aquino missed the point,” said the archbishop of Lipa a week before Congress abruptly voted on Aug. 6 to end the debates and proceed to the next battlegroundâ€"the period of amendments.

Archbishop Ramon Arguelles has taken a different tack in the Church crusade against the population control bill, sending congressmen gifts of religious trinkets and images of the Blessed Virgin Mary hoping those pushing for the measure would have a change of heart.

“Forgive me if in the past, due to the issues I as a Church servant have to uphold, I might have spoken uncharitably even to and about some of our government leaders,” Arguelles said in a letter that accompanied the gifts.

“Hoping and pleading for your kind understanding for this little attempt to reach you and humbly assuring you of our great respect and great expectations,” he added.

But not so the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). It maintained its defiant stance against the reproductive health (RH) bill.

In a strongly worded statement, the CBCP on Tuesday slammed the Aquino administration’s display of “naked power” and “unbridled resort to foul tactics” in a surprise vote on Tuesday last week to stop debates on the bill. The CBCP likened the move to the blitzkrieg fashion in which the lawmakers impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona.

“What makes her ordeal alarming to us in the provincial government...the recruiter gave her easy access to the CPDRC, allegedly as a live-in partner...In fact, she was issued a CPDRC conjugal ID,” tipik sa unod sa suwat ni Magpale ngadto kang Gastardo.

Sa habig ni Gobernador Gwen Garcia, gipaneguro niini nga imbestigahon ang maong pasangil.

“As I’ve already said, we are not running a kindergarten school here. Mga inmates na ang atong gisulod niana, accussed of different crimes,” matod sa gobernador sa buwag nga interview sa mga tigbalita sa Kapitolyo kagahapon.

Matod niya kon dunay makit-an nga nagpasagad sa katungdanan ila kini nga patubagon.

“We will deal with them accordingly. You have seen my swift action on previous occasions. Of course, we don’t also investigate by publicity calling for a press conference,” dugang ni Garcia.

Gisaway niya ang bise gobernador nga nagpatawag pa og media aron ibutyag ang maong pasangil nga prostittusyon sud sa CPDRC.

“Although this is the first time hinuon nga iyang gihimo because in the past, she was always matawag nato discreet especially in matters that already involve people’s reputation,” pahayag sa gobernador.

Sa pagkakaron, giklaro na sa mga abugado sa Office of the Vice Governor ang maong kaso samtang si Maria anaa na sa kustodiya sa International Justice Mission.

A calendar in Cebuano
By Jobers Bersales
Cebu Daily News
First Posted 08:17:00 11/11/2010

Jes Tirol of the University of Bohol has just published a seven-day, 12-month calendar in Cebuano. Dr. Erlinda Alburo, director of the USC Cebuano Studies Center, loaned it to me over the weekend because my curiosity was piqued.

I would have wanted to find out how he came about the terms used in his calendar, which he calls Tuigan (obviously derived from the Cebuano word for year, tuig), but this is basically a calendar and not a research paper and so I am left with wonderment. At least, Tirol provides some explanation on the meaning behind the term for each month at a boxed section of each page in his calendar.

Tirol has apparently adapted the Western or Gregorian calendar to lay out the days of the Tuigan, which starts the week on a Sunday (he calls it Ligid-ligid) and ends with Saturday (Hingut-hingot). The week days run this way: Monday is Tigburukad, Tuesday is Dumason, Wednesday is Dukot-dukot, Thursday is Baylu-baylo and Friday is Danghos. But he does not end there. He also uses the 12-month cycle of the Gregorian calendar that we are most familiar with.

The Tuigan's first seven months (Ulalong, Daghangkahoy, Daghangbulan, Kiling, Himaboyan, Kabay, Hidapdapon), are quite similar to those mentioned by the explorer Miguel de Loarca in his Relacion de las Islas Filpinas, written in 1595 (i.e. Ulalen, Dagankahuy, Daganen Bulan, Elkilin, Inabuyan, Kaway and Irarapun). Loarca wrote that our ancestors observed a 12-month calendar but only seven of these were named. The rest were not because, according to him, our ancestors' method of reckoning was based on the seasonal planting of fields and the harvesting crops, which effectively covered only seven months.

How Loarca came to the conclusion that Cebuanos knew of a 12-month year akin to those in Europe remains unexplained. The historian William Henry Scott, writing in Barangay: Sixteenth-Century Philippine Culture and Society, gives caution to Loarca's terms in that they do not, according to him, appear in early Bisayan dictionaries as names of months but rather as specific events that happen in swidden (or kaingin) farming.

This fact is important because, as Scott notes further, before the introduction of the Western/Gregorian calendar, Bisayans reckoned the days not by looking at the sun but by observing the waxing and waning of the moon, a cycle of 29 and-a-half-days and 43 minutes to be exact (p. 122), which if spread into 12 cycles would only total to 354 days as against the modern 365-day calendar which is not based on the lunar cycle. Furthermore, our ancestors did not see tuig to mean a full year of 12 months but any recurring period of time, like the routine of field preparation, planting, weeding and eventually, harvesting.

So what are we to make of this adaptation of the Gregorian calendar into Cebuano? I believe that is what it simply is: an adaptation. I would like to think that the terms are borrowed from some historical sources somewhere that were developed during the Spanish period when the Gregorian calendar was already widely used inasmuch as it was an important referent to the Catholic paschal cycle. Incidentally, the final five months are these: Kangurulsol, Bagyu-bagyo, Panglot nga Dyutay and Panglot nga Dako. If you want to know what these terms mean in Cebuano, it's time to get hold of Jes Tirol's Tuigan.

Cebuano calendar uses Karay-a; Ludabi member asked to explain
By Rizel S. Adlawan
Sunday, January 23, 2011

PROVINCIAL officials wanted to verify about a Cebuano calendar published by Dr. Jess Tirol after a resident of Talisay City said the terms used were Karay-a.

Segundo Pangantihon told the Provincial Board (PB) members during the recent session he is a true-blooded Antiqueño who speaks Karay-a. He said the words used by Tirol were not Cebuano.

He said Tirol used the Karay-a words for the days in the calendar like Ligid-ligid, Tagburukad, Dumason, Dukot-dukot, Baylo-baylo, Danghus and Hingot-hingot.

He said the months from January to December were translated as Ulalong, Daghangkahoy, Kabay, Hidapdapon, Lubad-lubad, Kangurosol, Bagyo-bagyo, Panglot nga Dyutay and
Panglot nga Dako.

“These are Karay-a terms, contrary to his claim that these are Cebuano words,” Pangantihon said, in an interview after the session.

He gave PB members copies of the Panay calendar and said his brother Vicente has been publishing it for the last five years. He said these copies are available at National Historical Institute and the National Library.

He said his brother researched about and has been printing a calendar entitled “Panay Church & History Calendar” using the same terms used by Tirol.

University of Bohol

Tirol is a member of Lubas sa Dagang Bisaya (Ludabi) and is connected with the University of Bohol. He was invited by the PB to shed light on the issue last month but he was not able to make it.

Sun.Star Cebu tried to contact Tirol but failed.

PB Member Arleigh Sitoy, a close friend of Tirol and also a member of Ludabi, assured his colleagues Tirol will attend the session tomorrow. He said Tirol often visits his father, Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy.

He said in jest Tirol was afraid of the big waves in Bohol last month that’s why he was not able to appear at the PB.

PB Member Agnes Magpale sponsored a resolution about Tirol’s calendar and said Pangan-tihon’s claim needs to be verified.

She said as a Cebuano, the calendar should be checked before it will be circulated further.

Published in the Sun.Star Cebu newspaper on January 23, 2011.

The biting aspect of Kino Mutai concerns itself with what targets to bite, how much to bite at a time, and the angle and movement of the bite.

The art at its best... ;D

Maayong buntag sa tanan,
I am trying to learn Visayan and I have a question about negation of past and future events.
Can somebody help me understand the meaning and time-frame of these sentences?
Wala siya niadto.
Wala siya muadto.
Dili siya niadto.
Dili siya muadto.

I thought that wala negates a past action but I have come across examples where wala negates verbs beginning with mu-.
I'm confused!

Hi, Mr. Perezkelly. With all due respect to Ms. Islander's treatise, I wish to offer an easier answer.

Simply put:

Wala siya niadto. --Ungrammatical.
Wala siya muadto. --Grammatical.
Dili siya niadto. --Ungrammatical.
Dili siya muadto. --Grammatical.

Grammatical rule: When formulating a negative sentence in the past, the future prefix (mu-) is used instead of the past prefix (ni-). Even more correctly, the correct past prefix is not "ni-" but "mi-". Even most correctly: "mo-" instead of "mu-".

;D

Grammatical all:

Miadto siya. He went.
Wala siya muadto. He did not go.
Muadto siya. He will go.
Dili siya muadto. He will not go.

P.S. There are several proposed Cebuano "grammars". Matira ang matibay. (Do you understand this "Tagalism" [or should it be "Tagalogism"], Sir?)

P.P.S. I'm no grammar Nazi or spelling Fascist, though. After all, language was made for man, and not man for language.
