wow!! ang magsilita parang sino as if as the owner in dubai hello? are you ok?. as if like a perfect person in our world. FYI not all politician in the phillipines are corrupt. Maybe the bill boy ask you a tip seguro you are tihik sugo kalang ng sugo and You don't know how to say the magic word  thank you or to appreciate it. How many times we went to Bohol and stayed for one week to two weeks and we never experienced that the hotel bill boy asking for a tip in front of us. Even here in U S or any part of the world giving a tip is part of your world although not recommended  but if you want a good service so do it. Your comment like an uneducated person. lol

in case you didn't understand my english, which is most likely, my dear u.s.-based promdi, i made comments about dubai because i read.  in the academe, which you've obviously missed, they call it research-based.  this does not include my having lived in dubai for some years, mind you.  even someone with down's syndrome will know that just because i read about the place doesn't mean i own it.

i make comments too based on personal experience.  if you never experienced what i had experienced in bohol, i.e. being asked for tips, chances are you look so poor and uneducated yourself, those in the tourism industry must have thought you needed the tips more than them.

and don't you dare tell me what manners are and what tips are for.  the former is second nature, the latter is for service that is appreciated.  it is for you to tell the difference.

fyi, whoever said that all politicians in the philippines are corrupt?

by the way, dahlin', you yourself sound like you never went beyond grade 2 section 31, with your logic, english and spelling.  what's "bill boy" and "magsilita", among others, hello?

next time you make comments about other people's comments, just give your two-cents' worth only on the comments; don't get personal, don't make conclusions about the person you haven't known or met to avoid being outed as the maleducated promdi/redneck that you really are, okay, juan tamad?  this is a forum for sharing ideas and experiences, not for quack psychologists like you.

i hope this time you understand my very simple english.

fyi, i.e. means id est.  that's latin.

The Twelve Days of Christmas is an English Christmas carol that enumerates a series of increasingly grand gifts given on each of the twelve days of Christmas.  Although first published in England in 1780, textual evidence may indicate the song is French in origin.

the background:

The Twelve Days of Christmas are the festive days beginning Christmas Day (25 December). This period is also known as Christmastide and Twelvetide. The Twelfth Night of Christmas is always on the evening of 5 January, but the Twelfth Day can either precede or follow the Twelfth Night according to which Christian tradition is followed.  Twelfth Night is followed by the Feast of the Epiphany on 6 January. In some traditions, the first day of Epiphany (6 January) and the twelfth day of Christmas overlap.

Over the centuries, differing churches and sects of Christianity have changed the actual traditions, time frame and their interpretations. St. Stephen's Day (or Boxing Day), for example, is 26 December in the Western Church and 27 December in the Eastern Church. Boxing Day, the first weekday after Christmas, is observed as a legal holiday in parts of the Commonwealth of Nations; Boxing Day was traditionally marked by the giving of Christmas boxes to service workers (such as postal workers and tradespeople) in the United Kingdom. 28 December is Childermas or the Feast of the Innocents. Currently, the twelve days and nights are celebrated in widely varying ways around the world. For example, some give gifts only on Christmas Day, some only on Twelfth Night, and some each of the twelve nights. (wikipedia)

Miss Earth USA denies Manila Facebook rant

12/07/2011

MANILA, Philippines -- Miss Earth USA Nicole Kelley has denied that she posted negative comments about the Philippines on Facebook, saying that it is “never okay to cyberbully anyone.”

This after several Filipinos turned to Twitter to bash Kelley for allegedly calling the country "dirty and noisy," and its people "annoying."

It all began when Filipino-Norwegian crooner Markki Stroem posted an undated screen capture of the Facebook post that Kelley (Nicole Lynn in real life) allegedly wrote.

The Facebook post read: "I hardly made it to Manila and we already attended a ridiculous TV show. So annoying!!! These people want to touch you and be with you all the time!! I can't understand a word they say. I can't wait to go back home. This country is so dirty and noisy. I'm scared to eat!!! What a mess. On a lighter note, I don't see any real competition."

Stroem told Kelley on Twitter: "How dare you come to my country, and rant after being welcomed with open arms!"

Kelley was in Manila for the Miss Earth 2011 pageant, which was held at the University of the Philippines Theater in Quezon City.

In a video released by the Miss Earth organizers, Kelley said that she was at a community center when the negative remarks were posted online, adding that she was “very disappointed” about what was written.

The video’s upload date is November 18, 2011, but Stroem posted his screen capture on Wednesday.

The video had 1,976 views as of posting time.

“As Miss Earth contestants, we should be appreciating each other and making each other happy instead of pulling each other down,” she said.

“I want to see from now on, from everyone, the girls and the public included…a more positive outlook. No matter what happens, we are all Miss Earth representatives and we are all responsible for what happens to this planet,” she added.

The incident brings to mind comments that actress Claire Danes made about Manila in 1998, which resulted in her being unofficially banned from the city.

She was quoted in Vogue as saying that Manila was a “ghastly and weird city” and in Premiere magazine that the country’s capital “smelled of cockroaches, with rats all over, and that there is no sewerage system, and the people do not have anythingâ€"no arms, no legs, no eyes.”

Danes apologized for her words, and said in a statement that her views only reflect poor areas in Manila, where her film "Brokedown Palace" was shot.

She stressed that the Filipino people were "nothing but warm, friendly and supportive" during her stay in the country.

Miss Earth-USA comments on Philippines goes viral on Internet

MANILA, Philippines â€" Nasty comments made by a contestant who competed in the just concluded Miss Earth beauty pageant on the social networking site, Facebook, has gone viral, eliciting varied reactions to her post.

“I hardly made it to manila and we already attended a ridiculous tv show. So annoying!!! These people want to touch you and be with you all the time!! I can’t understand a word they say. I can’t wait to go back home. This country is so dirty and noisy. I’m scared to eat!!! What a mess. On a lighter note I don’t see any real competition. Will keep you updated my loves”, according to the post that appeared on the Facebook page of Miss USA Nicole Lynn, which was uploaded before the pageant.

Lynn and other Miss Earth candidates guested in “Wil Time Big Time”, a television program hosted by Willie Revillame.

Lynn went on to lose the competition last December 4 that saw Miss Ecuador’s Olga Alava bag the crown with Miss Philippines’ Athena Mae Duarte Imperial winning the Miss Earth-Water title.

But in a video on the same page, Lynn claimed that her account was hacked and denied making such remarks.

Lynn’s “post” drew varied reactions. Among them:

Laine Palabrica from Antipolo, Rizal posted: “The truth, you speak it.”

John Levin Yalung Angeles from Holy Angel University said, “Well said mate.”

Yoko Cortez Muraoka of De La Salle University in Manila was scathing in her response: “That’s why you didn’t win!”

An anonymous post said: “good thing she didn’t win â€" she doesn’t deserve to be crowned as Ms. Earth if she would judge every country she will visit. She’s smart in a sense that she fooled the judges in the US who gave her the Ms. Earth USA title, and stupid to rant on FB, and not change her privacy settings.”

Barber killed over haircut, brother kills suspect

December 07, 2011

MANILA, Philippines (AP) â€" Philippine authorities say a mentally ill man who fatally stabbed his barber after he was teased about his new haircut has been shot dead inside a jail by the victim's brother.

Mayor Alex Centina of central Calinog town in Iloilo province says the brother of the slain barber pretended to be bringing food to the detained Benjie Lozada on Tuesday. Then, he shot him in the face in front of Lozada's mother.

Lozada had turned himself in last week and confessed to killing the barber and town pastor Charlie Agustino inside his shop after relatives teased him about his haircut.

Police said the suspect was taking medication for mental illness.

The town police chief was fired for security lapses. Police say they were busy with preparations for the town's fiesta.

some trivia---

2010 tourist arrivals:

united arab emirates - 7.43 million
philippines                - 3.52 million

i doubt if bohol's planned artificial islands would double the province's tourist arrivals, let alone the country's.

a personal opinion: tourists go to dubai (thus the uae) not for the artificial islands but for the tax-free shopping (the whole country is tax-free).  electronic goods, especially the latest ones, cost only about one-third of the cost in the philippines.  besides, their airport services are truly world-class.  no airport shady characters, no leeches called taxi drivers.

rather than make islands, couldn't we develop ourselves first, like putting proper values on what we have and what we could be?

lest we forget the possible inspiration...

The Palm Islands are an artificial archipelago in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on which major commercial and residential infrastructures will be constructed. They are being constructed by Nakheel Properties, a property developer in the United Arab Emirates, who hired Belgian and Dutch dredging and marine contractor Jan De Nul and Van Oord, some of the world's specialists in land reclamation. The islands are the Palm Jumeirah, the Palm Jebel Ali and the Palm Deira. (wikipedia)

and perhaps a little lesson, circa 2009?

From its artificial islands to its boring new skycraper, Dubai's architecture is beyond crass

Crassest of all the real estate initiatives are the three Palms, off-shore developments of 16 branches emerging from a central trunk, enclosed within a circular breakwater, each intended to house hotels, villas, apartments, marinas, theme parks, sports facilities, and malls. At Palm Jumeira, still largely undeveloped, the water between the branches is stagnating and algae is forming along the man-made beachfront. How this will affect the dolphins that are shipped from the South Pacific to amuse the guests at the Hotel Atlantis, who pay $75 to swim with them, is anybody's guess.

In December, Nakheel, developer of the Palms, cut 15% of its workforce. Dubai's stock market has lost 70% of its value. Half of the 100 Dubai estate agents interviewed for the Christian Science Monitor in December said they had not sold a property in the previous month. Some of the unfinished buildings I saw will never be finished. Many should never have been started. For all its extravagant novelties and its masses of petunias, Dubai is a city with neither charm nor character.

“We humbly believe the proposed project reclamation into man-made islands of Panglao Bay will enhance the province's vision of being a prime eco-cultural destination by providing readily available land for development by players in the industry,” said Oculam in his letter to Aumentado.
QuoteOculam said that the project will bring in more tourists and “bring enormous benefits” to the tourism industry here in terms of “economic development, business opportunities and employment generation.” It was expected the increase of visitors, now numbering more than half a million, will need for the opening of tourist sites, products and facilities.

sounds too rosy and too good to be true.

QuoteHere, “private sector can be tapped for coral planting and other marine-based initiatives for the conservation and protection of the environment.” The fifth cluster of islets (5 has.) can be acquired privately, the paper said.

maybe someone should tell that to the marines.

Contrary to claims describing the project as “a juicy proposal,” the SP found that it is a “grossly disadvantageous transaction" since the province has “totally surrendered its environmental and zoning responsibilities” to the project proponent. In addition, the SP said that the province “will be incurring costs” that are not being considered by the proponent. OLIDI, according to the lawmakers is "not qualified to undertake” the project since it has no track record being just newly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) with a capitalization of only P12 million represented by a group under Norris Oculam.

sounds fishy enough.

whew!  goodah.  let dubai have these probably similar constructions because that place really lacks what paradise needs.  but bohol?  don't we have those existing islands and islets, some of which don't even have potable water, that are worth developing?  why tinker with nature where nature has bestowed much?

besides, those emiratis in dubai have oil, and thus the funds, while their government for all intent and purposes cannot be accused of corruption.  sadly, in our day and age, where we are and what we are, any big time construction project advocated by politicians is suspect.  it's a dearth of trust, if nothing else.

we will have more tourists if our service sector is improved and professionalized some more.  (it's unprofessional to frontally ask for tips, right?  i find this common in bohol among hotel drivers and bellboys; and i'm not even a tourist!)  another tourist trap such as this planned one would only make bohol no different from so many other similarly "developed" tourist come-ons in the world.
