World’s oldest twins celebrate 102nd birthdays

By Eric Pfeiffer | The Sideshow â€" Wed, Jan 4, 2012

Ena Pugh and Lily Willward, British twins
who celebrated their 102nd birthday. (Wales News Service)

The world's oldest twins celebrated their 102nd birthday together on Wednesday. Born on January 4, 1910, Ena Pugh and Lily Millward have spent each of their birthdays together.

They were presented with copies of the Guinness World Records book, which includes their entry.

Lily's proud daughter Dianne Powell, 65, told Wales News Service: 'My mum's recovering in hospital after she slipped and fell just before Christmas. But she's in good spirits and enjoying the attention of being one of the world's oldest twins.

'Ena pops in to see her in hospital when she can - they are very close. And despite the terrible weather she made a special effort to get together on their birthday.'

The English twins were born before the beginning of World War I, and they still meet up for weekly shopping trips and talk on the phone nearly every day. Lily Millward said "laughter and having a joke with each other" has been the secret to their longevity.

"We used to work on the farm all day, but we would enjoy ourselves,' Millward said. 'It was a lot of fun and sociable. We've been very lucky and we have always had good health."

And the twins manage to get by without some modern technological innovations, including central heating. "Until my mum's accident, they would jump on a bus on their own every Friday so they can go shopping together and have a chat over a cup of tea," Powell said. "And they ring each other almost every evening although they are both very hard of hearing--they can't really always know what the other is saying but just enjoy talking to each other."

Pacquiao, 3 Arroyos among top House absentees in 2011

ANDREO CALONZO
GMA News
January 5, 2012

Three members of the Arroyo clan were among the top absentees in the House of Representatives last year, data released on Thursday by the House secretariat showed. World boxing champ and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao was absent more often than he was present.

Negros Occidental Rep. Ignacio Arroyo was the congressman with the third highest number of absences, attending only 26 of the 59 session days in 2011.

Ang Galing Pinoy party-list Rep. Juan Miguel Arroyo, meanwhile, was present during 33 session days, making him the eighth congressman with the highest number of absences.

His mother, former President and incumbent Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, attended only 35 session days last year. She was able to file formal notices of absence due to medical reasons during the 24 session days she failed to attend sessions, House secretariat records showed.

Last year, Mrs. Arroyo underwent a series of surgeries to correct a pinched nerve in her spine. She is currently recuperating from bone mineral disorder and hypoparathyroidism while detained at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City for poll sabotage charges.

But another member of the Arroyo clan â€" Camarines Sur Rep. Diosdado "Dato" Macapagal-Arroyo â€" was one of the 27 House members who posted a perfect attendance last year.

Ecleo

Dinagat Island Rep. Ruben Ecleo, however, topped the list of absentees with only 8 session days present. He was able to file notice of absences for the 45 session days he was not present, saying he was on official local business.

Ecleo, the supreme master of the Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association, has not been attending sessions while contesting an arrest warrant issued against him by the Sandiganbayan in February last year for a graft case.

He is also linked to the brutal killing of his third wife, Alona Bacolod, whose decomposing body was found in January 2002.

Jules, Pacquiao

Davao del Norte Rep. Anthony del Rosario, meanwhile, ranked second in terms of absenteeism, with 25 session days present. He was able to file official notices for 33 days that he was absent.

World boxing champ and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao ranked fourth, with 27 session days present and 38 absences without official notices.

For their part, Negros Occidental Rep. Julio Ledesma IV, Agusan del Sur Rep. Maria Valentina Plaza and Cagayan Rep. Juan Ponce-Enrile Jr. were tied in fifth place, with 30 absences each.

Under Section 70 of the current House rules, a congressman who did not respond to the roll call but was in an official meeting or business inside or outside the country is considered present.

Section 7, meanwhile, states that one of the duties of a lawmaker is to “attend plenary sessions and meetings of committees of which they are members or where their proposed legislative measures are under consideration." â€" RSJ, GMA News

Sa Pilipinas, daghang tawo walay kwarta dili ka afford maka check up. Sa America, bisan walay health insurance or walay kwarta, naay MEDASSIST nga mo bayad; naa pod daghang free hospitals/ free health clinics sa America. Daghan gehapon mo sue sa doctors kai naa poy pasyente nga ambisyoso maka kuhang kwarta dali.

naa pod sa ato if one only knows where to go.  dswd is always a place to ask help from, honest.  the other is the philippine charity sweepstakes office, from the provincial to the national level.  of course, we have our rural health clinics whose services are free; manned by a doctor at the municipal level and a midwife at the barangay level.  (most of our nurses would rather go abroad.)

himoon pa man gani ning rural health clinics ug outlets sa abortifacient contraceptives kun madayon ang rh bill.  (n.b. contraceptives are actually already available now in rural health units.)  so far, one can also have access to vaccinations and first aid medicines.

kaso, ingrained na sa pinoy mentality nga kun gobyerno, wa gyoy ayo, mao nga di na lang moadto ug mangayo ug panabang.  but believe me, they work.

This is one of the many reasons why physicians spend 60% of our time filling papers and documents.

bitaw, my impatience with waiting for the doctor was fleeting.  nangita na lang kog positive pagkahuman. kaayo na lang nga wa magdali ang doctor kay gitabang ko.

i had a worse wait some years back.  tibuok buntag hangtod mid-afternoon.  wa ko sapota ato kay wa koy laing appointment (unlike in my 3-hour wait lately).  nganong na-late ang doctor?  nagtabang intawon ug himatyonon sa i.c.u. from 4:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., pumping the patient's heart now and then.  by the time he came for our appointment, morag katumbahon kay way kaon.  i didn't ask him if his patient lived.  but i thanked my creator silently because i only needed to wait; i wasn't that suffering patient lying between life and death.

you heard me right, happy birthday fr chic, hehe.  news are nothing but organized gossip from professional writers.  we have no choice though because these writers or journalists provide our easiest and most immediate access to intellectual discourse.  there lies the difference between journalists and literary writers.  the former is very accessible, the latter is very challenging.

that's why i always take what i read or hear with a grain of salt.  in this particular news item (considering that the source is cebu-based 'banat' some of whose editorial managers and consultants i'm somewhat personally familiar with) the only unimpeachable truth is that someone died of a gun shot.  everything else is subject to speculation.  did he really kill himself?  did jealousy really get the better of him?  for all i know, even the names in the news item are spelled wrongly.

that kitten i picked up somewhere in a country outside the philippines was so playful despite its disability.  the vet insisted on putting it down.  i went out of the clinic crying.  that evening, the vet sent me an email apologizing for his decision.  he had to do it, he said, to save the kitten and me from worse future troubles.

the doctor was somewhere else; probably in another hospital, or so i would like to believe.  perhaps he was tackling a life-and-death emergency, who knows.  i can take comfort though in the fact that none of us, maybe 6 or 7 bored patients-in-waiting, was an emergency case.  doctors understandably hardly have time on their hands, but it would be nice if some time estimates can be had so patients like me need not waste our own precious time.

Revilla got only P100-million 'pork'; Abad says sorry
By Jess Diaz (The Philippine Star)
January 05, 2012

MANILA, Philippines - Budget Secretary Florencio Abad apologized yesterday for inaccurate entries on the website of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), which earlier showed Sen. Bong Revilla getting the largest pork barrel allocation among all lawmakers in 2011 and wrong expenditure figures for Senate President Pro-Tempore Jinggoy Estrada.

“We apologize to the public and to Senator Revilla for the confusion caused by the error in our published report. We place a very high premium on the publication of accurate data in our website, and we have taken steps to fix the inaccuracies and ensure that similar mistakes do not happen in the future,” Abad said.

He blamed the error on a computer glitch.

“The entries are computer-generated and uploaded in real time,” Abad said. “I just checked with our ICT (information and communications technology) people and have corrected the error.”

The DBM’s clarification came after Revilla complained that his P5-million expenses for the purchase of patrol vehicles for Cavite had been incorrectly stated as P115 million in the agency’s website. A story in The STAR on the senators’ Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or pork allocations was based on information lifted from the DBM website.

“It’s a typographical error. I allocated only P5 million for patrol vehicles for use by barangay communities in Cavite (his home province), not P115 million as reflected in the DBM website,” he said in a phone call to The STAR.

“I cannot blame you, you just based your story on the DBM report,” he said. Revilla, who said he was in Los Angeles, California vacationing with his family, said he could not understand why a single request for P5 million for patrol vehicles was repeated 23 times in the budget agency’s website. He lamented that because of the error, his political enemies went to town to attack him.

Revilla also said Cavite, the recipient of his P5 million, would buy “brand new, and not used, patrol vehicles.”

He said he gave away the bulk of his funds to other areas. “If you take away the padded amount from my alleged P210-million allocation as reflected in the DBM report, I only received P100 million, equal to the amount received by other senators,” he said.

Angry fan kicks seat, seat wins

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sdCnhYDbSQ#ws

By Brooks Peck

It's unclear where or exactly when this video was recorded, but the star of it is upset. Pacing back and forth in his half-empty section behind goal, he suddenly decides to unleash his fury on a seat, unaware that the seat is prepared to fight back.

His foot gets stuck and after a second of holding the awkward position, he goes flying backwards down several rows of empty seats. The man gets up and trudges back to his row a little embarrassed, a little more angry and a little more aware that kicking inanimate objects can backfire.

Senators Joker Arroyo, Panfilo Lacson and Sergio Osmeña III have not been touching their annual PDAF allocations.

this is something...

QuoteOf Revilla’s P210 million, the senator from Cavite spent half or P115 million for the purchase of 529 “used multi-cab/patrol vehicles” costing P217,391 each for use by the associations of barangay councils in his home province.

we bought the other year a new multicab with all the features of a van, supposedly the more expensive multicab design, airconditioning included.  cost: P160,000.
#37057
Santiago devoted the bulk of her funds to road projects: P15 million for the first Metro Manila engineering district, P10 million for Batangas, and P36 million for Rizal.

Sotto allocated P15 million for the rechanneling of an unspecified river and P10 million for the clearing of an unnamed creek, both in Angeles City; and P31 million for the purchase of anti-dengue medicine in three towns in Zambales, two towns in Quezon and one town in Romblon.

He also gave away P500,000 in financial assistance to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City and P200,000 to the East Avenue Medical Center in Quezon City.

Like Guingona, Trillanes is a big donor of state hospitals. His P35.4 million is all financial assistance to state schools and hospitals, including P5 million for the Heart Center, P5 million for the National Kidney and Transplant Institute, and P4 million for the Zamboanga Medical Center.

Villar allocated P39 million for scholarships and P2.5 million for a farm-to-market road in Davao del Sur’s first district, which is represented in the House by Marc Douglas Cagas; P12 million for “slope protection/desilting” projects in the second Metro Manila engineering district, and at least P6 million for livelihood projects in Las Piñas, his hometown.

The DBM released a total of P19.5 billion in PDAF funds to senators and congressmen last year.

Lapid set aside P31 million for infrastructure projects in his hometown in Porac, Pampanga; P11 million for the purchase of anti-dengue medicine in Castillejos, San Antonio and Botolan towns in Zambales; and P5 million also for anti-dengue medicine in Morong, Rizal. He gave the Porac District Hospital P300,000 in financial assistance.

Legarda’s projects are mostly small, costing from P200,000 to P500,000, but they are spread throughout the country.

Marcos spent P24.7 million for various projects in Ilocos Norte, his home province; and financial assistance amounting to P10 million for Umigan, P5 million for Mangatarem and P5 million for Rosales towns, all in Pangasinan; P10 million for Pilar, Bataan, and another P10 million for Sariaya, Quezon.

Pangilinan allocated P20 million for the construction of housing units in Legazpi City and P10 million in financial aid to the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

In the case of Recto, his projects include a P5-million, farm-to-market road in Bulacan, motorcycle units with sidecars costing P12 million for 110 barangay units in Batangas, his home province, and P10 million in financial assistance to barangay communities and public elementary and high schools in Tiaong, Quezon.

Drilon allocated P7.9 million for the electrification of four sitios in Barangay San Vicente, Sta. Ana, Cagayan; P5 million for the completion of the agribusiness center in UP Los Baños; and P5 million for the rehabilitation of the public market in Pavia, Iloilo.

Escudero’s projects include 80 units of multi-cabs costing P13.5 million for use by barangays in Cebu City, a P5-million multi-purpose building in Davao City, another P5-million multi-purpose building in Pangasinan, and a P4-million road construction in Ilocos Norte.

Like Enrile and Cayetano, Guingona spent his funds in the form of financial aid, including P10 million for the Heart Center, P15 million for the Bulacan Medical Center, P5 million for the town of Matag-ob in Leyte, and P4.5 million for the Sarangani Provincial Hospital.

Honasan gave away P2 million to four state hospitals but spent P40 million for the planting of jatropha, a plant touted as a source of biofuel and on which the Arroyo administration wasted more than P1 billion. It found out too late that jatropha was not a commercially viable plant.

Honasan also allocated P50 million for road projects in North Cotabato.

Alan Peter Cayetano’s P30.5 million is all financial assistance, including P5 million for Taguig City for the construction of a health center and P5 million for a four-story dormitory at the University of Eastern Philippines in Northern Samar.

Pia Cayetano’s biggest projects are a multi-purpose building at the Taguig City University worth P10 million, a school building at the Taguig Elementary school costing P5 million, two sea ambulances for the province of Palawan valued at P4.6 million, and P7 million in financial assistance to six state hospitals.

Estrada set aside P50 million in financial assistance to indigent farmers and P20 million for “boulder bank protections” in Pangasinan’s third engineering district. He gave nothing to San Juan in Metro Manila, his hometown, where he was mayor for three terms.

His half-brother, Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito, is the incumbent representative of San Juan, whose mayor, Guia Gomez, is JV’s mother.

Enrile gave away his funds in the form of financial assistance, including P15 million to government hospitals, P10 million to San Juan (Metro Manila), P4 million to Navotas, and P10 million to Angat, Bulacan.

Senators Joker Arroyo, Panfilo Lacson and Sergio Osmeña III have not been touching their annual PDAF allocations.

Resigned Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri did not receive any PDAF release in 2011 although in 2010, his releases totaled P41.9 million. Koko Pimentel has taken over his seat.

Of Revilla’s P210 million, the senator from Cavite spent half or P115 million for the purchase of 529 “used multi-cab/patrol vehicles” costing P217,391 each for use by the associations of barangay councils in his home province.

Angara allocated P40 million for projects in Aurora, his home province, P18 million for the rehabilitation of Mebaka channel in the Budiao-Banadero River in Daraga, Albay, and P20 million in financial assistance to San Isidro town in Isabela.

End of the World

Various ideas have been advanced concerning a possible end of the world in 2012.  One idea involves a geomagnetic reversal (often incorrectly referred to as a polar shift by proponents of this theory), which could be triggered by a massive solar flare, one with energy equal to 100 million atomic bombs.  This is supported by evidence that the Earth’s magnetic field is weakening, which indicates an impending reversal of the north and south magnetic poles.

Scientists believe the Earth is overdue for a geomagnetic reversal, and has been for a long time, even since the time of the Mayans, because the last reversal was 780,000 years ago. Critics, however, claim geomagnetic reversals take up to 5,000 years to complete, and do not start on any particular date.  Also, while NASA expects a particularly strong solar maximum sometime around 2012, there is no scientific evidence linking a solar maximum to a geomagnetic reversal.  A solar maximum would be mostly notable for its effects on satellite and cellular phone communications.

Another apocalyptic idea circulating about 2012, which has existed in various forms since 1995 and has changed dates at least twice since then, is that a large planet, called Nibiru, will collide with or pass by Earth in that year.  This idea has been ridiculed by astronomers, who point out that such an object so close to Earth would be visible to anyone looking up at the night sky.

Timewave Zero

Timewave Zero, which is part of Novelty theory, is a mathematical formula that purports to calculate the ebb and flow of “novelty”, defined as the increase in the universe’s interconnectedness, or organized complexity, over time.  According to Terence McKenna, who conceived the idea in the early 1970s, the universe has a teleological attractor at the end of time that increases interconnectedness, eventually reaching a singularity of infinite complexity on December 21, 2012, at which point anything and everything imaginable will occur instantaneously.

As the theory was never published in a peer-reviewed journal and McKenna’s sources and reasoning were primarily what would be considered numerological rather than mathematical by professional mathematicians and scientists, the theory has failed to gain any scientific credibility or much recognition.

McKenna expressed novelty in a computer program, which purportedly produces a fractal waveform known as timewave zero or the timewave.  Based on McKenna’s interpretation of the King Wen sequence of the I Ching, the graph appears to show great periods of novelty corresponding with major shifts in humanity’s biological and cultural evolution.  He believed the events of any given time are recursively related to the events of other times, and chose his end date by looking for a very novel event in recent history: the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.  This gave an end-date in mid-November of 2012, but when he discovered its proximity to the end of the 13th baktun, he adjusted the end date to match this point in the calendar.

Jenkins is credited with the premise that the classical Mayans anticipated this conjunction and celebrated it as the harbinger of a profound spiritual transition for mankind.

New Age proponents of the galactic alignment theory argue that, just as astrology uses the positions of stars and planets to predict the future, the Mayans plotted their calendars with the objective of preparing for significant world events.

Critics suggest that the alignment in question takes place over a 36-year period, corresponding to the diameter of the Sun, with the most precise convergence having already occurred without incident in 1998.  Also, Jenkins himself notes that there is no concrete evidence that the Maya were aware of precession.

Every year for the last 2000 years or so, on the winter solstice, the Earth, Sun and the galactic equator come into alignment, and every year, precession pushes the Sun’s position a little way further through the Milky Way’s band.

Jenkins suggests that the Maya based their calendar on observations of the “dark rift”, a band of black dust clouds in the Milky Way, which the Maya called the Xibalba or Black Road.  Jenkins claims that the Maya were aware of where the ecliptic intersected the Black Road and gave this position in the sky a special significance in their cosmology.  According to the theory, the Sun precisely aligns with this intersection point at the winter solstice of 2012.

Galactic Alignment

Frank Waters’ book inspired further speculation by John Major Jenkins in the mid-1980s, noting the correspondence of the December 21 date with the winter solstice in 2012.  This date was in line with an idea he terms the Galactic Alignment.  This term was “coined” by galactic astrologer Raymond Mardyks who was the first to identify and write about the relationship of this 1998-2001 “galactic alignment” with the claimed ‘Harmonic Convergence’ of 1987 and the supposed Mayan end date of 2012.

In the Solar system, the planets and the Sun share roughly the same plane of orbit, known as the plane of the ecliptic.  From our perspective on Earth, the twelve Zodiacal equinox changes.  In Western astrological traditions, this signals the end of one astrological age (currently the Age of Pisces) and the beginning of another (Age of Aquarius).

Over the course of 26,000 years, the precession of the equinoxes makes one full circuit around the ecliptic.  Constellations move along or near the ecliptic, and over time, appear to recede counterclockwise by one degree every 72 years.  This movement is attributed to a slight wobble in the Earth’s axis as it spins.  As a result, approximately every 2160 years, the constellation visible on the early morning of the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere is currently in the constellation of Pisces, so the winter solstice is currently in the constellation of Sagittarius, which happens to be the constellation intersected by the galactic equator.

Theories

A number of theories have been advanced by various esoteric writers and mystics with regard to how the world will end in 2012.  None have garnered mainstream acceptance by academic scholars of the Maya, who have rejected most on scientific and historical grounds.

New Age

Many believe that the ending of this cycle will correspond with a global “consciousness shift” and the beginning of a new age.  The date became the subject of speculation by Frank Waters, who devotes two chapters to its interpretation, including discussion of an astrological chart for this date and its association with Hopi prophecies in Mexico Mystique: the Coming Sixth Age of Consciousness (1975).

The significance of the year 2012 (but not a specific day) was mentioned briefly by José Argüelles in the Transformative Vision (1975), The Mayan Factor (1987), promoted at the 1987 Harmonic Convergence, and later in Author Daniel Pinchbeck popularized New Age concepts about this date, linking it to beliefs about crop circles, alien abduction, and personal revelations based on the use of entheogens and mediumship in his 2006 book 2012: the Return of Quetzalcoatl.  Pinchbeck argues for a shift in consciousness rather than an apocalpyse, suggesting that materialistic attitudes, rather than the material world, are in jeopardy.

Semir Osmanagić, the archaeologist responsible for promoting the Bosnian pyramids, referred to 2012 in the conclusion of his book The World of the Maya.  He suggests that “Advancement of DNA may raise us to a higher level” and concludes, “When the ‘heavens open’ and cosmic energy is allowed to flow throughout our tiny Planet, we will be raised to a higher level by the vibrations”.

Experts on the ancient Maya such as Schele and Freidel tend to see the focus on 2012 as a manifestation of Mayanism, a collection of New Age beliefs that reinterpret and potentially distort ancient Mayan culture.

University of Florida astronomer Susan Milbrath, author of Star Gods of the Maya, is among those who have accused 2012 doomsday proponents of exploiting Mayan culture to advance political or personal agendas.  Promotion of Mayanism through interest in 2012 doomsday scenarios is contributing to the evolution of religious syncretism in contemporary Maya communities.

2012 â€" The Mayan Calendar, ‘Doomsday’ or ‘New Beginnings’

The Mayan Calendar is something profoundly different than just a system to mark off the passage of time.  The Mayan Calendar is above all a prophetic calendar that may help us understand the past and foresee the future.  It is a calendar of the Ages that describes how the progression of  the Heavens and the Underworlds condition the human consciousness and thus give rise to the framework for our thoughts and actions within a given Age.

The Mayan Calendar is not predicting the end of the world 2012, but the start of a new era. The 2012 doomsday prediction is a present-day cultural meme proposing that cataclysmic and apocalyptic events will occur in the year 2012.  This idea has been disseminated by numerous books, internet sites and by TV documentaries.  The forecast is based primarily on what is claimed to be the end-date of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, which is presented as lasting 5,125 years and as terminating on December 21 or 23, 2012, along with interpretations of assorted legends, scriptures, numerological constructions and prophecies.

A New Age interpretation of this transition posits that, during this time, the planet and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation rather than an armageddon, and that 2012 may mark the beginning of a newer sociopolitical age for the global community.

Aztec

The Aztec Sun Stone, also known as the Aztec Calendar Stone,
at National Museum of Anthropology, Mexico City.
(as posted by hubag at the beginning of this thread)

The Aztec calendar is the calendar system that was used by the Aztecs as well as other Pre-Columbian peoples of central Mexico. It is one of the Mesoamerican calendars, sharing the basic structure of calendars from throughout ancient Mesoamerica.

Maya

The Maya calendar is a system of calendars used in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, and in many modern communities in highland Guatemala and in Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico.

The essentials of the Maya calendar are based upon a system which had been in common use throughout the region, dating back to at least the 5th century BCE. It shares many aspects with calendars employed by other earlier Mesoamerican civilizations, such as the Zapotec and Olmec, and contemporary or later ones such as the Mixtec and Aztec calendars. Although the Mesoamerican calendar did not originate with the Maya, their subsequent extensions and refinements of it were the most sophisticated. Along with those of the Aztecs, the Maya calendars are the best-documented and most completely understood.

Besides the fact that 99% of the time someone shows a picture of the “Mayan calendar” and is really passing the Aztec Sun Stone off as Mayan, the 2012 calendar is a complex issue.

The Aztec people were certain ethnic groups of central Mexico, particularly those groups who spoke the Nahuatl language and who dominated large parts of Mesoamerica from the 14th to 16th centuries. "Aztec" is the Nahuatl word for "people from Aztlan", a mythological place for the Nahuatl-speaking culture of the time, and later adopted as the word to define the Mexica people. Often the term "Aztec" refers exclusively to the Mexica people of Tenochtitlan (now the location of Mexico City), situated on an island in Lake Texcoco, who referred to themselves as Mexica Tenochca or Colhua-Mexica.

Aztec location: Central Mexico
Aztec period: 14th to 16th centuries

The Maya is a Mesoamerican civilization, noted for the only known fully developed written language of the pre-Columbian Americas, as well as for its art, architecture, and mathematical and astronomical systems. Initially established during the Pre-Classic period (c. 2000 BC to 250 AD), according to the Mesoamerican chronology, many Maya cities reached their highest state of development during the Classic period (c. 250 to 900 AD), and continued throughout the Post-Classic period until the arrival of the Spanish.

The Maya civilization extended throughout the present-day southern Mexican states of Chiapas, Tabasco, and the Yucatán Peninsula states of Quintana Roo, Campeche and Yucatán. The Maya area also extended throughout the northern Central American region, including the present-day nations of Guatemala, Belize, Northern El Salvador and western Honduras.
