GREEN

If yellow and blue, which we consider as the most fundamental and simple colours, are united as they first appear, in the first state of their action, the colour which we call green is the result.

The eye experiences a distinctly grateful impression from this colour. If the two elementary colours are mixed in perfect equality so that neither predominates, the eye and the mind repose on the result of this junction as upon a simple colour. The beholder has neither the wish nor the power to imagine a state beyond it. Hence for rooms to live in constantly, the green colour is most generally selected. -- http://www.brainpickings.org/
#37004
RED

Whoever is acquainted with the prismatic origin of red will not think it paradoxical if we assert that this colour partly actu, partly potentia, includes all the other colours.

We have remarked a constant progress or augmentation in yellow and blue, and seen what impressions were produced by the various states; hence it may naturally be inferred that now, in the junction of the deepened extremes a feeling of satisfaction must succeed ; and thus, in physical phenomena, this highest of all appearances of colour arises from the junction of two contrasted extremes which have gradually prepared themselves for a union.

As a pigment, on the other hand, it presents itself to us already formed, and is most perfect as a hue in cochineal ; a substance which, however, by chemical action may be made to tend to the plus or the minus side, and may be considered to have attained the central point in the best carmine.

The effect of this colour is as peculiar as its nature. It conveys an impression of gravity and dignity, and at the same time of grace and attractiveness. The first in its dark deep state, the latter in its light attenuated tint; and thus the dignity of age and the amiableness of youth may adorn itself with degrees of the same hue.

History relates many instances of the jealousy of sovereigns with regard to the quality of red. Surrounding accompaniments of this colour have always a grave and magnificent effect. The red glass exhibits a bright landscape in so dreadful a hue as to inspire sentiments of awe.
#37005
BLUE-RED

This unquiet feeling increases as the hue progresses, and it may be safely assumed, that a carpet of a perfectly pure deep blue-red would be intolerable. On this account, when it is used for dress, ribbons, or other ornaments, it is employed in a very attenuated and light state, and thus displays its character as above defined, in a peculiarly attractive manner.

As the higher dignitaries of the church have appropriated this unquiet colour to themselves, we may venture to say that it unceasingly aspires to the cardinal’s red through the restless degrees of a still impatient progression.
#37006
RED-BLUE

We found yellow very soon tending to the intense state, and we observe the same progression in blue.

Blue deepens very mildly into red, and thus acquires a somewhat active character, although it is on the passive side. Its exciting power is, however, of a different kind from that of the red-yellow. It may be said to disturb, rather than enliven.

As augmentation itself is not to be arrested, so we feel an inclination to follow the progress of the colour, not, however, as in the case of the red-yellow, to see it still increase in the active sense, but to find a point to rest in.

In a very attenuated state, this colour is known to us under the name of lilac; but even in this degree it has a something lively without gladness.
#37007
BLUE

As yellow is always accompanied with light, so it may be said that blue still brings a principle of darkness with it.

This colour has a peculiar and almost indescribable effect on the eye. As a hue it is powerful â€" but it is on the negative side, and in its highest purity is, as it were, a stimulating negation. Its appearance, then, is a kind of contradiction between excitement and repose.

As the upper sky and distant mountains appear blue, so a blue surface seems to retire from us.

But as we readily follow an agreeable object that flies from us, so we love to contemplate blue â€" not because it advances to us, but because it draws us after it.

Blue gives us an impression of cold, and thus, again, reminds us of shade. We have before spoken of its affinity with black.

Rooms which are hung with pure blue, appear in some degree larger, but at the same time empty and cold.

The appearance of objects seen through a blue glass is gloomy and melancholy.

When blue partakes in some degree of the pltis side, the effect is not disagreeable. Sea-green is rather a pleasing colour.
#37008
YELLOW-RED

As pure yellow passes very easily to red-yellow, so the deepening of this last to yellow-red is not to be arrested. The agreeable, cheerful sensation which red-yellow excites increases to an intolerably powerful impression in bright yellow-red.

The active side is here in its highest energy, and it is not to be wondered at that impetuous, robust, uneducated men, should be especially pleased with this colour. Among savage nations the inclination for it has been universally remarkedy and when children, left to themselves, begin to use tints, they never spare vermilion and minium.

In looking steadfastly at a perfectly yellow-red surface, the colour seems actually to penetrate the organ. It produces an extreme excitement, and still acts thus when somewhat darkened. A yellow-red cloth disturbs and enrages animals. I have known men of education to whom its effect was intolerable if they chanced to see a person dressed in a scarlet cloak on a grey, cloudy day.

The colours on the minus side are blue, red-blue, and blue-red. They produce a restless, susceptible, anxious impression.
#37009
RED-YELLOW

As no colour can be considered as stationary, so we can very easily augment yellow into reddish by condensing or darkening it. The colour increases in energy, and appears in red-yellow more powerful and splendid.

All that we have said of yellow is applicable here, in a higher degree. The red-yellow gives an impression of warmth and gladness, since it represents the hue of the intenser glow of fire.
#37010
YELLOW

This is the colour nearest the light. It appears on the slightest mitigation of light, whether by semi-transparent mediums or faint reflection from white surfaces. In prismatic experiments it extends itself alone and widely in the light space, and while the two poles remain separated from each other, before it mixes with blue to produce green it is to be seen in its utmost purity and beauty. How the chemical yellow develops itself in and upon the white, has been circumstantially described in its proper place.

In its highest purity it always carries with it the nature of brightness, and has a serene, gay, softly exciting character.

State is agreeable and gladdening, and in its utmost power is serene and noble, it is, on the other hand, extremely liable to contamination, and produces a very disagreeable effect if it is sullied, or in some degree tends to the minus side. Thus, the colour of sulphur, which inclines to green, has a something unpleasant in it.

When a yellow colour is communicated to dull and coarse surfaces, such as common cloth, felt, or the like, on which it does not appear with full energy, the disagreeable effect alluded to is apparent. By a slight and scarcely perceptible change, the beautiful impression of fire and gold is transformed into one not undeserving the epithet foul; and the colour of honour and joy reversed to that of ignominy and aversion. To this impression the yellow hats of bankrupts and the yellow circles on the mantles of Jews, may have owed their origin.

TOBACCO EPIDEMIC

Using data from Global Adult Tobacco Surveys (GATS) carried out between 2008 and 2010, Giovino's team compared patterns of tobacco use and cessation in people aged 15 or older from 14 low- and middle-income countries. They included data from Britain and the United States for comparison.

They found disproportionately high rates of smoking among men - at an average 41 percent versus 5 percent in women - and wide variation in smoking prevalence, ranging from about 22 percent of men in Brazil to more than 60 percent in Russia.

Rates of female smoking ranged from 0.5 percent in Egypt to almost 25 percent in Poland. Women in Britain and the United States also had high smoking rates, at 21 percent and 16 percent respectively.

The study found that around 64 percent of tobacco users smoke manufactured cigarettes, although loose-leaf chewing tobacco and snuff were particularly common in India and Bangladesh.

With an estimated 301 million tobacco users, China has more than any other country, closely followed by India with almost 275 million. Other countries included in the study were Bangladesh, Mexico, Philippines, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay and Vietnam. The researchers said the rise in tobacco use among young women was of particular concern.

In a commentary about the study also published in The Lancet, Jeffrey Koplan from Emory University in the United States and Judith Mackay from the World Lung Foundation in Hong Kong called for more investment in tobacco control measures, saying current under-funding was "extraordinary".

In low income countries, they said, for every $9,100 received in tobacco taxes, only $1 was spent on tobacco control.

The WHO says tobacco already kills around 6 million people a year worldwide, including more than 600,000 non-smokers who die from exposure to second-hand smoke.

By 2030, if current trends continue, it predicts tobacco could kill 8 million people a year.
#37031
The findings come as the world's leading tobacco firms, British American Tobacco , Imperial Tobacco , Philip Morris and Japan Tobacco <2914.T> lost a crucial legal appeal in Australia this week against the introduction of plain tobacco packaging.

Australia's planned "no logo" laws are in line with World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendations and are being watched closely by Britain, Norway, New Zealand, Canada and India, which are considering similar measures.

Tobacco kills up to half of its users, according to the WHO.

Smoking causes lung cancer, often fatal, and other chronic respiratory diseases. It is also a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, the world's number one killers. Ot her forms of tobacco use include snuff or chewing tobacco.

Matthew L. Myers, president of the U.S.-based Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, said the study "underscores the enormity of the global tobacco epidemic".

"Without urgent action, tobacco use will claim 1 billion lives this century," he said, urging poorer countries to "act now and address a crisis they can ill afford."

By Kate Kelland | Reuters â€" Fri, Aug 17, 2012

LONDON (Reuters) - Two fifths of men in developing countries still smoke or use tobacco, and women are increasingly starting to smoke at younger ages, according to a large international study which found "alarming patterns" of tobacco use.

Despite years of anti-smoking measures across the world, most developing countries have low quit rates, according to the study in The Lancet medical journal on Friday.
There are wide differences in the rates of smoking between genders and nations, as well as major disparities in access to effective anti-smoking treatments.

"Although 1.1 billion people have been covered by the adoption of the most effective tobacco control policies since 2008, 83 percent of the world's population are not covered by two or more of these policies," said Gary Giovino of the University at Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Professions in New York, who led the research.

Measures include legislation banning smoking in public places, imposing advertising bans and requiring more graphic health warnings on cigarette packets.

I think it’s part of the nature of man to start with romance and build to a reality. There’s hardly a scientist or an astronaut I’ve met who wasn’t beholden to some romantic before him who led him to doing something in life.

I think it’s so important to be excited about life. In order to get the facts we have to be excited to go out and get them, and there’s only one way to do that â€" through romance. We need this thing which makes us sit bolt upright when we are nine or ten and say, ‘I want to go out and devour the world, I want to do these things.’ The only way you start like that is with this kind of thing we are talking about today. We may reject it later, we may give it up, but we move on to other romances then. We find, we push the edge of science forward, and I think we romance on beyond that into the universe ever beyond. We’re talking not about Alpha Centauri. We’re talking of light-years. We have sitting here on the stage a person who has made the film* with the greatest metaphor for the coming billion years. That film is going to romance generations to come and will excite the people to do the work so that we can live forever. That’s what it’s all about. So we start with the small romances that turn out to be of no use. We put these tools aside to get another romantic tool. We want to love life, to be excited by the challenge, to life at the top of our enthusiasm. The process enables us to gather more information. Darwin was the kind of romantic who could stand in the middle of a meadow like a statue for eight hours on end and let the bees buzz in and out of his ear. A fantastic statue standing there in the middle of nature, and all the foxes wandering by and wondering what the hell he was doing there, and they sort of looked at each other and examined the wisdom in each other’s eyes. But this is a romantic man â€" when you think of any scientist in history, he was a romancer of reality.

The BPO industry is not the only affected export sector. Export leaders found themselves helpless in stopping the continued appreciation of the Philippine peso to its strongest in five years when it hit P41.68 billion the US dollar in the open market last month.

''The problem is bigger than the exports,'' said Sergio R. Ortiz-Luis Jr., president of PhilExport.

In one of the dialogues with top government officials including the panning chief and members of the Monetary Board, the policy making body of the BSP, it was revealed that had it not for the BSP intervention in the foreign exchange market, the peso would have reached P38 to the dollar.

''The BSP has admitted it has been losing money buying and keeping excess dollars entering the country to stem the rapid appreciation of the peso. It the past couple of years alone, it has lost P107 billion,'' Ortiz-Luis said.

Ortiz-Luis suggested for the whole economy to truly benefit from the strong peso, the BSP continue to pay in advance the government's billions of dollars in indebtedness and further relax the limits on the dollar purchases of private banks to ease the piling up of dollar remittances and export proceeds in the open market which is driving the peso even stronger.

The country's exports are expected to grow between 8 to 10 percent in 2012 from last year, but with the peso getting stronger exporters are starting to recalculate their assumptions.

Fabella pointed out that India's Rupee has devalued by 25 percent from January 2011 level of 44.67 to the current level of 55.62 against the US dollar.

''The trajectory of the Indian rupee has been downwards,'' Fabella said noting the rupee is geared for further weakening.

The Philippine peso, however, has been appreciating and is now hovering at below P42 to the dollar. This situation would make India more competitive than the Philippines, he said.

''Our BPO may not be able to hit the glorious targets and. Coupled with our appreciating peso that may not happen because they will be squeezed considerably,'' he said.

In 2011, the Philippines' IT-BPO industry generated more than $11 billion in revenue and employed almost 640,000 Filipinos.

Under the industry's roadmap, by 2016 the BPO industry t is expected to grow to $25 billion in annual revenue and employ 1.3 million, according to an industry road map.

In addition, Dr. Emma V. Teodoro, trustee of the Information Technology, Products and Services sectors, warned that in six years, the BPO industry will no longer be as attractive if the peso appreciates by three percent more.

BPO contracts are negotiated in US dollar terms and most of the current contracts with their clients were based on the P43-P42 level to the dollar.

Manila Bulletin â€" Sun, Aug 19, 2012

MANILA, Philippines - The business process outsourcing, (BPO), the country's sunniest industry, is slowly waning its competitive edge to India largely due to the appreciation of the peso against the US dollar compared to India's rupee, which has been devalued by as much as 25 percent, an economist said.

Economist Raul V. Fabella issued this warning during the ''Competitive Currency Forum'' organized by the Philippine Exporters Confederation (PhilExport) on Friday as exporters tackled what they believed as the ''oppressive'' foreign exchange rate policy of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

''The foreign exchange has a very important impact on our competitor India in the BPO space,'' Fabella said. India used to be the global hub of BPO firms after it was by the Philippines, which is now the clear leader especially in the voice business.

3. Diarrhea

Diarrhea is common in all parts of the world. In this, your bowel movements are in abnormally liquid state. This disease usually spreads through contamination in food and water. Since it causes dehydration, you need to ensure that you take Imodium or similar substitute so as to maintain the water levels.

2 Tetanus

This is a bacterial disease which affects your central nervous system. Like Diarrhea, it is not country or place specific. It is said to occur when your word gets contaminated with bacteria. Some of the most common symptoms of tetanus include spasms, stiff neck, fever, body pain. Tetanus is also called lock jaw. It’s a must that proper vaccination is done once the disease is confirmed.

1. Malaria

Even though this disease is more common in developing countries in Southeast Asia, Middle East and some part of Africa and South America, many cases are reported every year from developed countries as well. This disease is caused by parasites and might prove dangerous if necessary precautions are not taken in time. The symptoms of Malaria are similar to flu and include muscles aches, fatigues, chills and fever etc.

miadto - past tense
muadto - future tense

unsa man ang present tense ana?

Interesting question. Looks like our language does not provide for one. "I will go" and "I am going" apparently both translate as "Moadto ko". It is safe to say that "Moadto ko" is the equivalent (somehow) of the present tense. But we have no equivalent for the simple present tense which, come to think of it, does not make sense. Going, after all, presupposes movement, and thus "I go" can mean either in a progressive sense or as intention. "I go where the wind blows" translates as "Moadto ko..."

Interestingly, the lack of distinction between present and present progressive tenses in our language has led to difficulties in our acquisition of English language skills. English language pupils can still be heard saying, "I am eating rice everyday."

Question and Answer / Re: Is there an afterlife?
August 20, 2012, 07:51:45 PM
To set us to thinking, here's a short observation on the subject:

‘Does God exist?’ I have chosen to avoid that question, for the reason that ‘God’ is too abstract a concept to present in blanket terms. For example, even the most ardent atheist would profess a belief in the Big Bang. If I decided to label the events which created the Big Bang as ‘God,’ my non-believing friend would now be a theist by trick of definition.

Instead, I pose the question of whether there is a spiritual life after death; this includes the Heaven professed by monotheistic religions such as Christianity or Islam, as well as reincarnation and other such beliefs held by Eastern religions.

The question of an afterlife has vexed philosophers and laymen alike since the dawn of time, and we are no closer to an answer today than were our ancestors. On the one hand, it is human nature to question the meaning of life and ponder its continued existence once we shuffle off our mortal coils. A life that ends with mortal death is seen by many to be bleak and meaningless, and belief in an afterlife is the only thing that sustains them. However, desire aside, unless the deceased begin returning to us from beyond the grave to openly and unambiguously document their experiences, it will be impossible to definitively prove the existence of an afterlife.

Believers in the paranormal and Near Death Experiences (NDEs) may protest, and certainly many intelligent people belong to this category. However, mainstream science is yet to recognize the former phenomenon, and the latter is mostly believed by the scientific community to be symptomatic of a distressed brain shutting down near death. With opinion divided down two irreconcilable paths and no consensus in sight, it is safe to say that mankind as a whole is no closer to answering the question: ‘What happens to me when I die?’ --Peter Muriniti

Aw kon walking pawnshop, initan jud. Basta hambogero mabigyan jud... ;D
