Dreams are not without sense, nor are they best understood to be expressions of infantile wishes. They are the result of the interconnectedness of new experience with that already stored in memory networks. But memory is never a precise duplicate of the original; instead, it is a continuing act of creation. Dream images are the product of that creation. They are formed by pattern recognition between some current emotionally valued experience matching the condensed representation of similarly toned memories. Networks of these become our familiar style of thinking, which gives our behavior continuity and us a coherent sense of who we are. Thus, dream dimensions are elements of the schemas, and both represent accumulated experience and serve to filter and evaluate the new day’s input.

Sleep is a busy time, interweaving streams of thought with emotional values attached, as they fit or challenge the organizational structure that represents our identity. One function of all this action, I believe, is to regulate disturbing emotion in order to keep it from disrupting our sleep and subsequent waking functioning.

While Jennifer’s family did not object to the relationship, Pabling’s children and grandchildren objected at first when the couple began talking about marriage.

“But I love her so much and she loves me so much, too. It’s like you and me against the world,” he said.

Pabling said he fell in love with Jennifer because of her attitude. “She may be young in age but she thinks and acts maturely,” he said.

Jennifer assured Pabling she is not after his material possessions. To all doubters about the purity of her love, she once told Pabling, “They will see later how I love you. Your help to me cannot be repaid by money.”

Jennifer believes Pabling is her knight in shining armor because he came, like in a song, “at the right time in my life.”

The two met at the house of Jennifer’s friend in Bonuan Binloc. Jennifer at that time had stopped schooling as a sophomore nursing student in Lyceum Northwestern University here.

Pabling helped Jennifer look for a job related to her course in the campaign of Gina de Venecia, wife of the former speaker, who was then running as congresswoman. After the campaign, Pabling again helped Jennifer land a job, which she held until their wedding, at the CSI Mall owned by Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez.

Through the two years they were together, Pabling said he had loved and accepted everything about Jennifer, including her past.

“If she didn’t love me, maybe we wouldn’t last this long,” he said.

DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines â€" Love knows no age.

An 80-year-old retired policeman, known as the Eddie Garcia of Dagupan, married his 21-year-old girlfriend in a civil ceremony on Monday.

Pablo de Asis, alias Pabling, a widower from Sitio Bagong Baryo, Barangay Bonuan Binloc, is popular among Dagupeños not only as a loyal ally of former House speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. but also for his snappy dressing and a spring in his step.

The other day, he became the talk of the town when he married Jennifer Cagaoan, his young girlfriend from Victoria, Tarlac.

“It was love at first sight,” De Asis told The STAR two days after his wedding.

His wife was not around at the time of the interview as she was packing things up in her rented apartment before moving into the conjugal home.

Pabling and Jennifer address each other as “Babes” and went steady for two years before they finally decided to get married.

While Jennifer’s family did not object to the relationship, Pabling’s children and grandchildren objected at first when the couple began talking about marriage.

“But I love her so much and she loves me so much, too. It’s like you and me against the world,” he said.

Their wedding had to be postponed for ten days after Pabling fell ill and could not get up from bed.

The disease develops around age 50 on average but does not run in families, which makes it unlikely that a single gene is responsible, Browne said. Some patients have died of overwhelming infections, including some Asians now living in the U.S., although Browne could not estimate how many.

Kim Nguyen, 62, a seamstress from Vietnam who has lived in Tennessee since 1975, was gravely ill when she sought help for a persistent fever, infections throughout her bones and other bizarre symptoms in 2009. She had been sick off and on for several years and had visited Vietnam in 1995 and again in early 2009.

"She was wasting away from this systemic infection" that at first seemed like tuberculosis but wasn't, said Dr. Carlton Hays Jr., a family physician at the Jackson Clinic in Jackson, Tenn. "She's a small woman to begin with, but when I first saw her, her weight was 91 pounds, and she lost down to 69 pounds."

By MARILYNN MARCHIONE | Associated Press â€" Wed, Aug 22, 2012

Researchers have identified a mysterious new disease that has left scores of people in Asia and some in the United States with AIDS-like symptoms even though they are not infected with HIV.

The patients' immune systems become damaged, leaving them unable to fend off germs as healthy people do. What triggers this isn't known, but the disease does not seem to be contagious.

This is another kind of acquired immune deficiency that is not inherited and occurs in adults, but doesn't spread the way AIDS does through a virus, said Dr. Sarah Browne, a scientist at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

She helped lead the study with researchers in Thailand and Taiwan where most of the cases have been found since 2004. Their report is in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

"This is absolutely fascinating. I've seen probably at least three patients in the last 10 years or so" who might have had this, said Dr. Dennis Maki, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

It's still possible that an infection of some sort could trigger the disease, even though the disease itself doesn't seem to spread person-to-person, he said.

82lb carp raises bar

By Angling Times
18 November 2009 09:24

The Benelux carp record has been broken by Peter Kuppens with his capture of this enormous 82lb 5oz common carp from a stillwater attached to the V-Channel in the north of Belgium.

Following a slow couple of months on the venue with only one fish to show for his efforts, the 43-year-old made a couple of changes to his approach, scaling down from 26mm to 20mm boilies and reducing his level of pre-baiting.

On his next session, Peter banked four carp, including a brace of forties to over 42lb, in just three hours, before returning home to stock up on bait and food.

He returned to the lake the same evening, and in the early hours of the next morning received the bite from the new record fish.

The Lommel, Belgium-based carper took the giant specimen, which beat the previous record by 5oz, on a 20mm Dynamite Baits Fresh Prawn boilie.
