OCD has facilitated the sourcing of grants and funding for Project Cloyd. It said the project has become a new source of income for some members of the community, who have relied mainly on fishing and other traditional income sources.

Gradually, Ribo’s team has been also able to get commissioned projects like wedding videos, audio-visual presentations, and video documentations like that of town fiestas and other events where their trainings are put to good use.

Its director, Clara Balaguer, said: “Art, and by extension cinema, is not merely the luxury of a chosen few but an avenue for everyone to be able to expand their ability to think critically, solve problems creatively and even make a decent living. It can make a difference.”

For the “Rashomon” remake, Ribo is in the process of refining his script translation. The OCD has plans to raise funds for the completion of the workshops through Kickstater, a crowd-sourcing platform based in the US that funds creative projects.

One of the plans of OCD is to come up with a pop-up film, a mobile production facility which carries all camera, editing equipment and computers which the School of the President can use in their various projects, including the completion of Ribo’s version of “Rashomon.”

Since the latter part of 2011, several workshops on the different aspects of research, planning, intermediate and advance production along with other technical and aesthetic requirements of moviemaking have been extended to Rubio and his team.

One of his mentors, Dutch-Filipino filmmaker  Martha Atienza,  said that in training  Rubio and his crew, she realized how fond they were of Indian movies. Their fresh outlook was an advantage, Atienza noted.

However, their exposure to western media seems to be a stumbling block, Atienza said: “The main challenge for me is originality. The local dialect does not even have (a translation for) this word. If it has never been seen or done before on MTV or any television program, then it just is not good. So they are good at copying but the challenge is to teach them to think independently.”

His barbecue-cum-internet shop has been the venue of his online learning. From there, he has learned the ropes of film making, including how to use the camera, editing, and graphic ad via the internet.

His family used to own Republic, the only movie theatre in town â€" this would explain his affinity with cinema.  He also got involved in a stage play several years back.

In between selling barbecue and operating his internet cafe, Ribo dabbles in small-scale productions, including mixing music for a local radio station.

He  involved a number of local teenagers in his newly-setup production, School of the Presidents.   What is unique about their production is it is very community-based and is committed to producing materials about and for the community.

Under Project Cloyd initiated by the Office of Culture and Design (OCD), a group of Filipino directors from the Philippine independent cinema community and Spanish directors has been helping Ribo’s group realize this project.  The lineup of directors and creative professionals include Lav  Diaz, Yason Banal, Martha Atienza, Franco Guerrero, Joey Suaco, Raya Martin, Spanish director Carlos Casas and graphic artist Rafa Cortez.

Cloyd teaching at his Internet barbecue shack

A passion for films and a lot of dreams could sometimes spark a cinematic feat to remake a classic film.

Cloyd Ribo, a middle-aged struggling local filmmaker from a remote island in southern Philippines, dreams of remaking Akira Kurosawa’s award-winning film “Rashomon” in his native dialect (Lawisanon).

With the help of trusted artist-friends, Ribo is in the process of making this film project a reality on Bantayan Island in Cebu.

Asked why he chose to remake “Rashomon,” Ribo explained: “It’s a narrative that revealed so much about humanity.”

“Rashomon” is a Japanese crime drama film that won the Golden Lion Award for its director (Akira Kurosawa) in the 1951 Venice Film Festival, and Best Foreign Language Film in the 24th Academy Wards in the US in 1952.

Ribo is a self-taught filmmaker, who has been studying the craft from online sources, mostly from Youtube, since 2010.

Among the expectations that the participants may gain from the Stakeholders Engagement Training include understanding of the risk of vulnerability of labor sector, youth and indigenous people to recruitment of the communist movement. They are also expected to acquire and put to practice the knowledge and skills in conflict management and the process on consensus-building and decision-making.

The 56 active participants are also expected to understand on the identification of different stakeholders, their roles, responsibilities and functions in the community; and acquire knowledge on creative and strategic solutions for complex problems and situations. Learning the process of community organizing as an effective tool in sustaining the community development is also a paramount for the trainee’s development.

President Benigno Aquino made history by appointing Lourdes Sereno as the country's first female Chief Justice, but he also broke tradition by setting aside the seniority rule and naming to the highest judicial post one of the Court's youngest associate justices, who also happens to be his college schoolmate.

Sereno's appointment places control over the judicial and executive branches of government in the hands of two graduates of the Ateneo de Manila University,
both 52 years old, who obtained degrees in Economics within a year of each other.

Sereno however has always maintained she has no ties with the President. She is said to have left an impression on him when she briefed the Senate on different issues on at least two occasions while Aquino was still a Senator.

Sereno, who was Aquino's first appointee to the Supreme Court, obtained her Economics degree from the Ateneo in 1980. Aquino got his a year later, in 1981. Sereno went to the University of the Philippines for her law degree. (The name and photo of Sereno, who was known as Lourdes Punzalan Aranal in her college days, do not appear in the Ateneo yearbook Aegis in 1980, the year she graduated).

Concept

The project sprung from casual interviews with people in Spearin's neighbourhood on the subject of happiness.

After each interview I would listen back to the recording for moments that were interesting in both meaning and melody. By meaning I mean the thoughts expressed, by melody I mean the cadence and inflection that give the voice a sing-song quality. It has always been interesting to me how we use sounds to convey concepts. Normally, we don’t pay any attention to the movement of our lips and tounge [sic], and the rising and falling of our voices as we toss our thoughts back and forth to each other. We just talk and listen. The only time we pay attention to these qualities is in song. (Just as when we read we don’t pay attention to the curl and swing of the letters as though they were little drawings.)
Meaning seems to be our hunger but we should still try to taste our food. I wanted to see if I could blur the line between speaking and singing - life and art? - and write music based on these accidental melodies. So I had some musician friends play, as close as they could, these neighbourhood melodies on different instruments (Mrs. Morris on the tenor saxophone, Marisa on the harp, my daughter Ondine on the violin, etc.) and then I arranged them as though they were songs.

One of the most dangerous aspects of flying is the landing. As the aircraft gets closer to land, the air traffic is more congested, the weather on the ground may be far worse than the weather at 30,000 feet, and the runways may not be clear of other planes. So pilots rely on the air-traffic controller to coordinate all the details so that every plane can arrive without incident. Without the air-traffic controller, chaos would be certain.

Community calling programs

Some communities offer services through the police departments and community organizations to check in on latchkey kids. Calls can be made by community organizations or by volunteers.

Automatic calling programs such as Call Reassurance call households during the week after children arrive home and require the child to answer the phone and positively acknowledge that he or she is OK. If the call is not answered, automatic calls can likewise be sent to the parents, police or other response centers. --Wiki

Legal issues

The legality of the latchkey children's "alone time" varies with country, state and local area. In the United States, state and local laws typically do not specify any particular age under 18 when a child can be legally left without supervision.

Parents can be held accountable by child welfare organizations or law enforcement if children come to harm while left without supervision if, in the opinion of the agency, the children's age or other considerations made such a choice inappropriate.

In 2003, this issue received attention in the United States when two children died in a New York apartment fire after being left home alone. Their mother, Kim Brathwaite, was a single mother who had left her children unsupervised when a babysitter failed to show up. Fearing the loss of her job, Brathwaite left the children, aged 9 and 1, alone while calling home regularly. The Brooklyn District Attorney's office brought charges of reckless endangerment against Ms. Brathwaite. --Wiki

Effects on children

The effects of being a latchkey child differ with age. Loneliness, boredom and fear are most common for those younger than 10 years of age. In the early teens, there is a greater susceptibility to peer pressure, potentially resulting in such behaviors as alcohol abuse, drug abuse, sexual promiscuity and smoking.

Socioeconomic status and length of time left alone can bring forth other negative effects. In one study, middle school students left home alone for more than three hours a day reported higher levels of behavioral problems, higher rates of depression and lower levels of self-esteem than other students.

Children from lower income families are associated with greater externalizing issues (such as conduct disorders and hyperactivity) and academic problems, while children from middle class and upper class income families are no different to their supervised peers. In 2000, a German PISA study found no significant differences in the scholastic performance between "latchkey kids" and kids in a "nuclear family".

Positive effects of being a latchkey child include independence and self-reliance at a young age. Deborah Belle, author of The After-School Lives of Children: Alone and With Others While Parents Work suggests that being left home alone may be a better alternative to staying with baby-sitters or older siblings. --Wiki

History of the term

The term refers to the latchkey of a door to a house. The key is often strung around the child's neck or left hidden under a mat (or some other object) at the rear door to the property. The term is claimed to have originated from an NBC documentary in 1944, due to the phenomenon of children being left home alone becoming common during and after World War II, when one parent would be enlisted into the armed forces, so the other would have to get a job. --Wiki

More likely to eat than be eaten, this giant whale shark was caught off the coast of China by hardcore fishermen who managed to harness the ten-metre, eight-tonne whopper.

Whale sharks are the world's largest living fish, it is estimated that they can reach an 18 metre length. They live in warm water along the coast and open seas and spend most of their time near the surface.

The prize whale shark's hefty load took over an hour to be hoisted in an industrial crane back on to dry land, where it was sliced into relatively smaller pieces for fish-lovers everywhere to enjoy. -- http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-443987/Is-worlds-biggest-shark-steak.html#ixzz24f9pV4s6

Real life sleeping beauties
24 August 2012, 11:52
http://web.orange.co.uk/

An art installation in Kiev features five real-life sleeping beauties - who have to marry a man who kisses them if they open their eyes.

The women are to lie 'sleeping' for three days as part of artist Taras Polataiko's installation in the National Art Museum of Ukraine.

As they sleep, men survey and kiss the women, trying to wake them, reports the Daily Telegraph.

If the sleeping beauties open their eyes, both man and woman are contractually obliged to tie the knot.

Mr Polataiko explained: "Everybody, any viewer, will have to sign the contract, which says if... I kiss the beauty and she opens her eyes while being kissed, I marry her."

Requirements for both men and women are the same: they must be over 18, single, and have a sincere desire to get married.

Men were allowed to kiss the beauty only once, and only on the lips.

Mr Polataiko said he hoped the exhibit would attract plenty of male visitors.

"I hope they come, so it will be more interesting for the beauties. But I really don't know. It's a really serious thing, it's marriage," he said.

If you can sustain your interest in what you’re doing, you’re an extremely fortunate person. What you see very frequently in people’s professional lives, and perhaps in their emotional life as well, is that they lose interest in the third act. You sort of get tired, and indifferent, and, sometimes, defensive. And you kind of lose your capacity for astonishment â€" and that’s a great loss, because the world is a very astonishing place. --Milton Glaser
