Since My Valentine Got A Computer

Since my Valentine got a computer
My love life has taken a hit.
Nothing I say is important
Unless it’s a byte or a bit.

Before she got her new laptop,
Everything was just fine;
Now she says we can’t talk
Unless we both go online.

"But honey," I said, "I’m attached to you;
Love is what I feel."
"That keyword isn’t relevant,"
She said, with eyes of steel.

She clicked the keyboard furiously;
The screen was all she could see,
And then to my horror and shame,
She started describing me:

"Your motherboard needs upgrading;
Your OS needs help, too.
And you definitely need a big heatsink
To cool your CPU."

"Don’t flame me, my sweet," I pleaded.
"Not on Valentine’s Day."
"Fix the bugs, and I’ll see," she said,
While looking at me with dismay.

"What ever you want, my darling;
Whatever you need; you call it.
I’ll upload or download anything,
And then I’ll go install it."

(Her hostile CD keeps replaying,
And though I don’t want to fight her,
Is this what I want for a Valentine?
I’ve been burned; can I rewrite her?)

"Are you all hard drive now," I asked
"Is there no software in you?
Don’t you remember the good times?
Let our memories see us through."

"LOL," she said to me, chuckling.
"You’re nothing but adware.
"I’ve got four gigs of memory;
I’ve got no problem there."

"Please, honey, we can save it," I said.
"Our love means more than that."
"That’s not in my cache; we’re going to crash,"
She said, as she turned me down flat.

(This woman has really changed;
Do I really want to chase her?
More and more I’m thinking
It might be nice to erase her.)

"Aw, honey, don’t talk like that," I said.
"Can’t we just plug and play?
I hereby accept default,
And I’m yours, my love, come what may.

My goal is to make you happy;
I want to be your portal,
But your sudden, distant coldness
Would test the strongest mortal.

If we need a brand new interface,
So we can FTP,
I’m your go along, get along guy,
And I want you to stay with me."

"If you want to get into my favorites," she said,
And you want to get past my encryption,
If you want to get through my firewall,
Here is my only prescription."

"First, put up your own Web site,
And e-mail me when it’s done.
I’ll check your page rank with Google,
And tell you if you’re the one."

My life has become a real trial,
Since my Valentine got a computer.
If I want her to care about me again,
I guess I’ll have to reboot her.

With respect to the Lower House, much has already been written and discussed about the speed with which it reached its decision to impeach CJ Corona -- seven hours from the start of its caucus to its instructions for the signed impeachment complaint to be transmitted to the Senate.  Which would have been fine if they were all superintellectuals close to omniscience.  But alas, their performance in the impeachment trial has shown that to be very much NOT the case, particularly where legal expertise is required.

serves us right for voting them into office.
#36635
Even worse, the prosecution has been practicing another form of “creative defiance” to the tribunal’s orders, to wit: it has continued to discuss the case (through its spokespersons), arguing for the prosecution outside of the impeachment court, presenting “evidence” not yet even presented to the court.  Ponce Enrile has been quoted as saying: “No other institution or body can try and decide this impeachment case.  The people do not have the authority to try and decide this impeachment case so therefore, may I request some degree of caution on the part of everyone in exposing evidence that ought to be presented in this impeachment court, out in the public.”  And again, “We are not litigating this case among the people.  We are a representative democracy, not a direct participating democracy, we operate through representatives of the people.”

And they are getting away with it.

http://www.bworldonline.com/
#36636
And yet, the House Prosecution Panel had the gall to ask for even more accommodation -- complaining about the “inflexibility” of the Senate President, giving as examples the fact that he sustained many defense objections, ordering the prosecution to reform its questions.  The fact that Niel Tupas, speaking for the prosecution, could not give specifics as to how the rules should be amended to provide more “flexibility” was another indictment of the prosecution’s inability to do its homework.

http://www.bworldonline.com/
#36637
And so we have seen them, caught, any number of times on TV, unprepared.

As far as I am concerned, the impeachment tribunal and its Presiding Officer Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile has leaned over backward, sometimes to the extent of giving priority to the need for courtesy to the Lower House over the need to observe due process, particularly with regard to the rights of Corona.

http://www.bworldonline.com/
#36639
Apparently, these were all part of the information requested by the prosecution panel -- which required presidential authority.  And this was readily given, never mind whose rights were violated, as long as the objective to “get” Corona is achieved.

http://www.bworldonline.com/
#36640
And finally, there is the Executive’s directive to BIR Commissioner Kim Henares to present information not only to the income taxes and value of real estate purchases of Corona and his wife, but also of his children (which the impeachment tribunal forbade as evidence).  As if that were not enough Henares was also directed by the Executive to give the list of the purchases made by all others who bought from the same locations that the Coronas made their purchases -- trampling on the right to privacy of citizens who are not in any way connected to the trial.  Thankfully, the impeachment tribunal is well on the way of forbidding such disclosures.

http://www.bworldonline.com/
#36641
Penultimately, and this is the most disturbing in terms of pulling out all the stops to “get” Corona, is that CoA seems to have also gotten into the picture -- and of course CoA is supposed to be an independent constitutional commission.  What did CoA do?  It rendered an adverse opinion on the fairness of the presentation of the SC’s financial statements for 2010.  I looked at the CoA audit reports for the SC for as far back as its Web site carried it (2001), and this is the only adverse opinion it has rendered on the SC over that period.  It could be, of course, that the new CoA is more exacting than the old CoA, but as far as I could make out, there was not that much difference in the magnitudes involved from one year to the other.  Calling the attention of Grace Tan and Heidi Mendoza.  Please look into this.

http://www.bworldonline.com/
#36642
Then the Executive’s media spinners went to town and by the time they finished, the $199 thousand worth of “ineligible” expenditures seemed to be wholly Corona’s fault.  Never mind that the “ineligible” expenditures -- which still had to be confirmed -- comprise all of eight-tenths of 1% -- 0.81% -- of the total project cost; and never mind that the extent of Corona’s direct participation in these ineligible expenditures seems to have been, as far as I can tell, the cost of a trip he made to Cebu that was charged to the project.

http://www.bworldonline.com/
#36643
Let’s start with the Executive, which at the outset pretended to be above the fray, but has finally removed the gloves and is coming in for the kill.  What powers were unleashed by this branch in the endeavor?  For one, we saw how the Department of Justice brazenly defied an order of the Supreme Court (how flawed that order was is beside the point at the moment).  Then we saw how the Department of Finance released a raw report (in the sense that the report writers gave the caveat that it was still deliberative and to be confirmed) of the World Bank on a Supreme Court project, and blew it all out of proportion, with such holier-than-thou statements like “The leadership of the Supreme Court cannot simply dismiss these very serious observations,” and “the World Bank is very important development partner of the country.”  Yukk.

http://www.bworldonline.com/
#36644
It is truly a horrific spectacle -- members of the two more powerful branches of government using all the resources at their disposal to destroy the head of the third, weakest, branch.  And in the process, destroying, albeit unintentionally, the branch itself.  What makes it all the more unpalatable is that they themselves come with unclean hands.

Calling A Spade A Spade
By Solita Collas-Monsod

January 25, 2012

The pictures that come forcibly to mind when I observe the behavior of the Executive and the Lower House in the matter of the impeachment of CJ Renato Corona are of a pack of wolves circling their prey, or of a couple of bullies ganging up on someone half their size.  And my natural instinct -- or rather my sense of fair play -- leads me to take the side of the underdog (pardon the horribly mixed metaphors).  What is more, I have a feeling the Filipino people are getting just as uncomfortable as I am.

Love thy neighbor’s dog or pay

By Tetch Torres
INQUIRER.net
Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

MANILA, Philippines â€" A man who shot his neighbor’s dog has been made to pay for his crime by a local court.

In a six-page decision by Judge Wilfredo Timola of the Taytay, Rizal Municipal Trial Court, Carlos Gozum was sentenced to pay a fine of P5,000 with subsidiary imprisonment in case he has no means to pay and also ordered to indemnify the dog owner Renato Tuazon P15,238.75.

Records showed that in Feb. 5, 2009, Gozum shot the nine-month old Labrador of Tuazon.

Gozum denied the allegation, saying he does not own a gun as shown from the certification issued by the Firearms and Explosives Unit (FEU) of the Philippine National Police.  His daughter Judith also said that her father was a peace loving man.

However, witness John Joseph Tuazon said when he heard a gunshot, he went outside his house to find Gozum standing near their dog’s cage holding a gun while the dog whimpered in pain.

Another neighbor, Andrea Valle, who was near the window of her house also said that when she heard the gunshot, she looked outside her window and saw Gozum standing near the dog cage holding a gun.

“Wherefore, premises considered, the Court, upon proof beyond reasonable doubt finds accused Carlos Gozum guilty of violation of Section 6 of Republic Act 8485 (Animal Welfare Act of 1998),” the court ruled.

The dog survived the attack.

“I love him very much.  I want to kill myself.  I am under a lot of stress,” he told policemen and rescuers who were trying to get him to change his mind.

Shortly before noon, several of the policemen and rescuers from the Bureau of Fire Protection apparently had enough.

They climbed to the 18th floor and then jumped to the 16th floor where they wrestled Fedelin back inside his unit and persuaded him to give himself up.

At the same time, they took Quitaleg to a nearby hospital where he was treated for acid burns.

Fedelin, however, was not yet done.  As he was being taken away, he made the following appeal: “To all men, be faithful to your gay lovers.”

Senior Police Officer 1 John Sales of the Kamuning police station investigation division said they were looking into reports that just before Fedelin snapped, Quitaleg had told him that he was breaking up with him.

Jealous man tries to kill self after spat with boyfriend

By Julie M. Aurelio
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Monday, January 23rd, 2012

“Usiseros” gathered Monday at the corner of Panay and Timog Avenues in Quezon City after a man clutching a rosary and a pillow sat on the ledge of a window at the 16th floor of the Victoria Tower condominium.

When it seemed apparent that the man was going to jump, a call was made to the police a few minutes past 9 a.m. and members of the Kamuning police station rushed to the scene.

For nearly three hours, they tried to talk him out of killing himself even as they tried to piece together the circumstances that had led him to contemplate such a drastic move.

Gradually, the story came out: The man’s name was Joseph Fedelin.

He was 44 years old, an English teacher and he had just hurled acid at the face of his live-in partner of five yearsâ€"Jefferson Quitaleg, a call center agentâ€"who, at that moment, was inside their unit.

Fedelin, who was bleeding from cuts he had inflicted on his wrists, told the police that he and his boyfriend had been arguing since Sunday night over the latter’s alleged affair with another man.

Although Quitaleg had consistently denied the rumor, Fedelin said he recently caught him chatting with his supposed new boyfriend on a social networking site.

On Monday morning, Fedelin was apparently overcome by anger and jealousy.

He threw acid on the face of his boyfriend, grabbed a knife, cut his wrists and then climbed out on the ledge of the window of their unit.

meanwhile, one can be assured of some kind of balance...

On January 25, 2008, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines CBCP public affairs head and Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez, Jr. stated that "while they are happy for Suarez, they will remain "watchful" of his healing Masses and activities."

On January 26, 2008, 2 died and 7 were rushed (due to exhaustion) to James Gordon Hospital, Olongapo City while waiting for Fr. Suarez' healing Mass. Juanito Eleazar, 69, died of heart attack amid more than 15,000 patients having lined-up.

At Mexico, Pampanga, 39-year-old colon cancer-stricken Alberto Tapnio died while in wheelchair (and thereafter blessed by Fr. Suarez during a healing Mass). Tapnio was DOA (dead on arrival) at a hospital but was revived by electric shocks. Upon notice of the resurrection, the crowd of 20,000 people started clapping, praying and shouting, but Alberto died 4 hours later.

it all boils down to a matter of faith.  even doctors know that no matter what they do to a person, if the person does not want to heal, he won't heal, according to a lesson shared by a local medical student.

as for the gift of healing, many people have it, so why not a priest in this instance?

Father Suarez claims he discovered his gift of healing at the age of 16.  He saw a crippled woman and upon feeling sorry for her, he sat and prayed with her.  During this, he literally started to feel bones growing in her legs, and due to shock, he ran away.  To this date, no one has found this woman.  He tried to keep this a secret for as long as he could, and agreed to pray with the sick as long as they didn't tell anyone about him for a fee or a donation.  However, upon being ordained a priest, it became more evident to him that the gift of healing was not only meant for him, but to be shared with other people as well.  Since then he has been traveling around the world celebrating healing Mass and praying with the sick.

On January 11, 2008, Manila Cardinal Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales officiated the sacrifice of the Mass which started the 3-day, 40-hour vigil at Fr. Suarez' Batangas City Montemaria mega-shrine.  Hundreds of devotees and the sick gathered.

Suarez, 44, announced his return to and resumption of healing in the Philippines on May, 2008.

Suarez, on July 21, 2008, healed Filpinos in the 7 hours healing Mass at the Saint Joseph Community in Brussels, Belgium.

Fr. Suarez had his radio program "Healing Grace with Fr. Fernando Suarez" aired over Radyo Veritas every Sunday night.

hahaha! what is your favorite karaoke song, isles?

none.  i hate all those neighborhood karaokes/videokes here.  they're so loud and no one can really sing, honest.  i guess real singers preserve their voice rather than disturb their neighbors.

as a somewhat frequent flyer, my preference had always been PAL, until lately.  arang mahala na gyod intawon, gitakigan pa kog hinuwat sa airport kun kanus-a makalupad.  daghan pa gyod ang di mao sa centennial terminal sa manila nga exclusive for PAL.  naay mangayog pinaskuhan nga naka-uniform (avsecom?), naay mokalit ug kuyog morag escort magngisingisi (well, obvious ba unsay gusto), arte ug morose ang mga flight attendants, ug unsa pa.  ma-feeling gago hinoon ko.

at terminal 3 in manila where the no-nonsense and much cheaper cebu pacific/pacific flyer is based, so far things are just as no-nonsense and very professional.  gone is the joke that taking cebu pacific means boarding in cebu and landing in the pacific.

about time PAL is overhauled so we can be proud of our flag carrier again.

well, according to some wags years ago, it is disappointing that kris aquino takes after her aunt tessie (the erstwhile senator aquino-oreta, sister of ninoy; dubbed as the "dancing queen" during erap's impeachment trial) and not after her mother who is regarded as gracious and socially adept.

you ought to be glad that you achieved what you achieved without sacrificing your presence with your family.  kining silingan nimong niasenso (kunohay) kay ni-abroad, wa ta kahibawo basin ug taga-liog ilang utang.  trappings ra na; naay bayay mang-abroad (di tanan, please) nga di moadmitir nga palpak sila.

prangkang estorya, naa koy mga kaila sa abroad nga inig-uli way lipod-lipod ug pangutang ni bisag kinsa basta lang naay ikapakita; padak-on ang balay, mopalit ug sakyanan, ug unsa pa diha.  turned-off gyod ko kay di na ra ba pakitag balik ang uban unya gitutyo na lang ang ilang utang.
#36687

i would like to believe that it is an option, in the same way that those who go to other countries as immigrants is another option.  staying put, for some, or for the many, in fact, is definitely another option.  we all know that life is full of choices or options, each with its own advantages and sacrifices.  we only need to see which option fits us best and the price we have to pay for it.

Facts and Trivia / Re: The humble French fries
January 23, 2012, 05:44:41 PM
Some fast food chains rely on artificial trans-fats which are quite harmful and unhealthy.  A regular size French fries contains around 4-7 gm of trans-fats.  According to health experts, more than 2 gm of trans-fats in a day can prove to be extremely dangerous for the health. far from humble, this is expensive for the majority in our country.

imagine, not so long ago, the u.s. took to calling this 'freedom fries' to show its displeasure with france.  it turns out to be belgian and the adjective 'french' has nothing to do with france after all. ;D
