The Protocols of the Elders of Zion

The Protocol of the Elders of Zion is a text that purports to describe a Jewish and Masonic plot to achieve world domination.  It is one of the most well known and discussed examples of literary forgery.  Numerous independent investigations have concluded it to be either a plagiarism or a hoax.  The Protocols is widely considered to be the beginning of contemporary conspiracy theory literature, and takes the form of an instruction manual to a new member of the “elders,” describing how they will run the world through control of the media and finance, and replace the traditional social order with one based on mass manipulation.

Continued usage of the Protocols as an antisemitic propaganda tool substantially diminished with the defeat of the Nazis in World War II.  It is still frequently quoted and reprinted by some anti-Semitic circles, and is sometimes used as evidence of an alleged Jewish cabal, especially in the Middle East.  Elements of the text in the Protocols appears to be plagiarized from an 1864 pamphlet, Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu, written by the French satirist Maurice Joly. Joly’s work attacks the political ambitions of Napoleon III using Machiavelli as a diabolical plotter in Hell as a stand-in for Napoleon’s views.

Interestingly, many of the protocols aims have been achieved.  For example: Universal suffrage, wide acceptance of pornography, the spread of Darwinism, Socialism, and Materialism.

The Cardiff Giant

The Cardiff Giant, one of the most famous hoaxes in American history, was a 10-foot-tall (3m) “petrified man” uncovered on October 16, 1869 by workers digging a well behind the barn of William C. “Stub” Newell in Cardiff, New York.  Both it and an unauthorized copy made by P.T. Barnum are still on display.  The Giant was the creation of a New York tobacconist named George Hull.  Hull, an atheist, decided to create the giant after an argument with a fundamentalist minister named Mr. Turk about a passage in Genesis that stated that there were giants who once lived on earth.

Hull hired men to carve out a 10-feet-long, 4.5 inches block of gypsum in Fort Dodge, Iowa, telling them it was intended for a monument of Abraham Lincoln in New York.  He shipped the block to Chicago, where he hired a German stonecutter to carve it into the likeness of a man and swore him to secrecy.  Various stains and acids were used to make the giant appear to be old and weather beaten, and the giant’s surface was beaten with steel knitting needles embedded in a board to simulate pores.  When the giant had been buried for a year, Newell hired two men, Gideon Emmons and Henry Nichols, ostensibly to dig a well.  When they found the Giant, one of them has been attributed to saying “I declare, some old Indian has been buried here!”.

The giant drew such crowds that showman P.T. Barnum offered $60,000 for a three-month lease of it (in his memoirs he said he wanted to buy it).  When the syndicate turned him down he hired a man to covertly model the giant’s shape in wax and create a plaster replica.  He put his giant on display in New York, claiming that his was the real giant and the Cardiff Giant was a fake.  On February 2, 1870 both giants were revealed as fakes in court.  The judge ruled that Barnum could not be sued for calling a fake giant a fake.

Feejee Mermaid

The Feejee Mermaid was presented as a mummified body of something, supposedly a creature that was half mammal and half fish (like a grotesque version of normal mermaid stories).  The original exhibit was popularized by circus great P.T. Barnum, but has since been copied many times in other attractions, including the collection of famed showman Robert Ripley.  The original exhibit was shown around the United States, but was lost in the 1860s when Barnum’s museum caught fire.  The exhibit has since been acquired by Harvard University’s Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology and is currently housed in the museum’s attic storage area.

The Fiji mermaid came into Barnum’s possession via his Boston counterpart Moses Kimball, who brought it down to Barnum in late spring of 1842.  On June 18, Barnum and Kimball entered into a written agreement to exploit this “curiosity supposed to be a mermaid.”  Kimball would remain the creature’s sole owner and Barnum would lease it for $12.50 a week.  Barnum christened his artefact “The Feejee Mermaid”.

In reality, the mermaid was a gaff, the work of an Indonesian craftsman using either papier-mâché and materials from exotic fish, or the tail of a fish and a torso of a baby orangutan, stitched together with the head of a monkey.

Alien Autopsy

In 1995, Ray Santilli instigated a wide reaching “alien autopsy” controversy when he claimed to possess footage taken in a tent by a U.S. military shortly after the 1947 Roswell UFO incident.  Santilli first presented his film to an invited audience of media representatives, UFOlogists and other dignitaries at the Museum of London on 5 May 1995.  Although the broadcast version did not show the actual “autopsy”, video editions have the complete and unedited film, plus previously unreleased footage of wreckage presented as the remains of the alien craft reported to have crashed in Roswell.  The show features interviews with experts on the authenticity of the film.

On April 4, 2006, two days prior to the UK release of Alien Autopsy Ray Santilli and fellow producer Gary Shoefield announced that their film was only partially real (a “few frames,” in their words), while the rest was a reconstruction of twenty-two rolls of film, averaging four minutes in length, which Santilli had viewed in 1992 but which had subsequently degraded from humidity and heat.  According to Santilli, a set was constructed in the living room of an empty flat in Rochester Square, Camden Town, London.  John Humphreys, an artist and sculptor, was employed to construct two dummy alien bodies over a period of three weeks, using casts containing sheep brains set in jelly, chicken entrails and knuckle joints.

The Surgeon's Photograph of the Loch Ness Monster

This famous picture, which shows what looks like the head of a prehistoric creature emerging from the waves of Scotland's Loch Ness, was allegedly snapped by gynecologist Robert Wilson in 1934. It soon became known as the "surgeon's photograph," because searching for "gynecologist's photograph" on Google Images will absolutely not result in finding this picture.

Before Dr. Vagina's famous photo, the Loch Ness Monster had been limited to a few legends and scattered local sightings, which presumably accompanied spottings of highland prostitutes and grain alcohol. After the surgeon's photo, however, the creature gained worldwide attention, despite the fact that Wilson himself denied the Loch Ness Monster even existed and insisted he had just taken a picture of some animal he didn't recognize.

"Ooh, an animal I don't recognize! Good thing I don't believe in monsters or I would be shitting all over myself right now."

Monster sightings and photographs continued unabated in the area for the next 60 years until 1994, when a man named Christian Spurling finally confessed to the hoax. Spurling explained that his father-in-law Marmaduke Wetherall had staged the picture using a fake monster head attached to an 18-inch long toy submarine.

The whole ridiculous plan was an attempt to get back at his employer, a newspaper called the Daily Mail that had ridiculed him in a recent issue. Wetherall had Dr. Wilson submit the picture to give it more "respectability."

The original uncropped image, which is clearly a prehistoric beast and not a duck or a bathtub toy.

And Yet...

So that's the end of the Loch Ness Monster, right?

Not even close. Die-hard cryptozoologists immediately dismissed Spurling's hoax confession, insisting the resources that he described being used to make the fake monster didn't exist in 1934 (fake monster heads would apparently not be invented until much later).

To this day, the Loch Ness Monster industry is thriving, and every few years there's a new, expensive expedition setting out to find it. There was a 2003 BBC special that employed satellites and 600 separate sonar beams to try to track down the beast once and for all.

So Why Do They Still Believe?

The fact that there are "cryptozoologists" in the world (that is, people who specialize in tracking legendary creatures to prove they're real) should tell you. There are people who have staked their reputations on the creature being real and depend on the income from books asserting such. It's not so easy for somebody in that position to give in to the "wooden head glued to a toy submarine" theory.

Latest photograph of the monster.

If there were only some way to walk away from the theory and save face at the same time... oh, wait. Some Loch Ness Monster experts say the creature has probably now died. Due to global warming.

We should also point out that Loch Ness is located in an area where the other main attractions involve grim industrial sprawl and a dish made of ground sheep's heart, so they're going to promote the hell out of any mythical creature they can get their hands on. Scotland would probably be claiming Highlander as a true story if they thought they could get away with it.

hoaxes, those tricks that make one "believe or accept as genuine something false and often preposterous", have been around, and not just for cebuanos.  some famous hoaxes in history have even tenaciously clung in the world's collective memory.  some samples:

Crop Circles

The phenomenon of those large circles of flattened crops mysteriously appearing in fields goes back to the 1970s, in Southern England. Soon it spread all over the world, with crop circles reported as far away as Australia, America and Japan. Various explanations were given, such as aliens, ball lightning and large-scale unregistered hootenannies.

Thousands of these crop circles were reported over the decades, gaining a massive following among UFO enthusiasts who worked tirelessly to try to decipher what was clearly messages from another world. After all, the perfect patterns could clearly not be replicated by, say, a couple of dumbasses in their spare time.

We're sure the ufology community's faces were red when, in 1991, pranksters Doug Bower and Dave Chorley from Southampton, England confessed to creating the original circles. They even demonstrated to journalists how they produced the perfect shapes by flattening them in the crops using planks and ropes, and crude surveying techniques.

The confession was prompted when Bower's wife noticed unexplained high mileage on his car and began to suspect him of having an affair, though Cracked feels that after learning the truth--that Bower was actually going out at night with another man to flatten hectares of wheat--she may actually have wished that adultery was to blame.

And Yet...

Bower and Chorley found themselves widely ignored. After all, they didn't confess to doing all the crop circles, right? Maybe they just started the prank and then real aliens came and joined in.

Feverish study of the circles continued unabated, and M. Night Shyamalan even featured them in Signs, more than a decade later.

Are Men Exempt for All Household Works?

no.  luckily for me, my banana republic does not think it's beneath him to help around the house.  there are just some things i can't do, like opening tight bottle caps or waking up early to prepare breakfast or ironing more than 2 or 3 clothes at a time.  he hates dishwashing, i don't mind picking up his things from the floor.

one tries to make up for the other as far as household chores are concerned.  we learned to live with that without any expressed agreements on how to do things.  it behooves on me though to try to do more as much as i can because he's the one who holds a day job.

Tsunami scare hits Cebu City

ABS-CBNnews.com
Updated as of 02/06/2012 9:06 PM

MANILA, Philippines - False rumors of a tsunami coming to devastate earthquake-affected areas caused widespread panic in Visayas today, stopping traffic in Cebu City and panicking residents.

A video taken earlier today at around 3:30 p.m. by hotel worker Jose Gochangco using his iPhone showed people running on the streets, and drivers honking their horns as motor vehicles were stuck in traffic.

Gochangco was in the lobby on the 7th floor of the GV Hotel on Osmeña Boulevard corner Sanciangko Street in Cebu City when people who had come up from the street told hotel staff that seawater had reached downtown Cebu City.

A security guard went up to the hotel’s top floor to see if the people’s story was true, but found that the coast looked the same as usual, and nothing seemed to have changed.

“Pagtingin namin sa labas, may mga tao nang tumatakbo, may mga kotseng bumubusina. Puro flat land dito, pumupunta yata sila sa pedestrian bridge for safety, o gusto lang nilang makalayo sa tubig,” Gochangco said.

False reports had allegedly been spread by people on motorcycles, who said that a tsunami was coming to sweep Cebu City away.

Foreign tourists had also come up to the hotel to seek refuge or even watch the water coming in.

About an hour after the panic, local officials reportedly went around the city in a fire truck to clarify that there was no tsunami.

“Nobody on our staff was hurt,” Gochangco said. “Sana hindi naman dumating ang panahon na magiging mahalagang mataas ang building ng hotel namin.”

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck between the islands of Cebu and Negros on Monday morning, killing at least seven people. Intensity V was felt in Cebu City.

Tsunami alert level 2 was raised by the Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in Negros and Cebu. The alert was lifted at 2:30 p.m. (With reports from Lean Lacap and Rhoel Fernandez, Regional Network Group)

some parents who were already inside the campus when the gates were locked (some unfortunate others were locked out for a time) had the sense to help calm the situation.  after a community prayer led by a nun using a public address system, an act that calmed the kids greatly, an american couple was reported to have laughed and said, "it's okay for our kid to stay on here.  there's no tsunami because we don't have an ocean in cebu".  another mother did it best by using the microphone and announcing that she works at the dpwh, her office is located beside the sea, and the sea waters are still there.

elsewhere, radio commentators did their part to dispel the rumor.  because some side streets were jammed by jeepneys abandoned by drivers, they asked, "makadagan kaha mo padung ngadto sa cebu plaza kun naay tsunami?  nagtoo kaha mo nga di mo maabtan?  pamalik mo kay naa pa ang dagat sa carbon (market)".

luckily, we were already safe at home with our little girl.  i was told that i was one of the first to fetch a child in the school; i thank the heavens for my insistence in going home straight knowing the terrible traffic that had to be negotiated.

the tsunami rumor spread fast and spilled over to that school in uptown cebu.  the sight of people running on the streets terrified the school authorities.  they thought it was a chase for a criminal so they had to hurriedly close the school gates.  and then it was as if the whole school was filled with the sound of wailing kids who were still waiting to be fetched.  they've just been through the terror of an earthquake, now they thought the tsunami was coming.
#36526
it was bad in downtown cebu sometime in the mid-afternoon because of the rumored tsunami.  it is alleged that it took only some pranks of motorcycle-riding guys shouting "naa na ang tsunami!" and people spilled out of buildings and the streets were emptied of public transport.

look at what rumor and a sick humor can do to a multitude.

President Benigno Aquino III’s spokesman said authorities did not force people to evacuate but implored those along the shore to be vigilant.  The coast guard grounded all vessels while the tsunami alert was in effect.

A mall in San Carlos city in neighboring Negros Occidental province was damaged when its windows were shattered by the shaking, said Ramos, the civil defense leader.  The quake was also felt in Cebu, where it lasted about 30 seconds.

The Philippines is located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where earthquakes and volcanic activity are common.  A 7.7-magnitude quake killed nearly 2,000 people in Luzon in 1990.

Philippine seismologists briefly issued a tsunami alert for the central islands.  Five bamboo and wooden cottages were washed out from a beach resort in La Libertad by huge waves, but there were no reports of injuries, said police Superintendent Ernesto Tagle.  Elsewhere along the coast, people rushed out of schools, malls and offices.

The epicenter was closest to Tayasan, a coastal town of about 32,000 people flanked by mountains in Negros Oriental province.  A child there died when a concrete fence of a house collapsed, said Benito Ramos, head of the Office of Civil Defense.

“So far one dead, but we could not yet account for the damage to buildings,’ Tayasan police officer Alfred Vicente Silvosa told The AP by phone.  He said there were still aftershocks “so we are outside, at the town plaza.  We cannot inspect buildings yet because it’s dangerous.”

“I felt the building shaking, so I rushed out of the building.  Our computers, shelves, plates, the cupboards, water dispenser all fell,” he said.

A three-story office building also collapsed in La Libertad, but occupants managed to run out.

Negros Oriental police chief Edward Carranza said the temblor damaged many houses in Guihulngan and he ordered his men to help displaced residents find shelter.

Officials in some areas suspended work and canceled classes.  Power and telecommunications were knocked out in several places.

Carranza said police rushed out of his building when the quake struck.  “All my personnel ran out fearing our building would collapse,” he said.

“Now it’s shaking again,” he said as an aftershock hit.  “My keychain is dancing.”

6.8 quake in Philippines kills 5 and buries homes; scores missing

MANILA

A strong earthquake in the central Philippines killed at least five people Monday as it destroyed buildings and triggered landslides that buried dozens of houses, trapping residents.  At least 29 people were missing.

The 6.8-magnitude quake, in a narrow strait just off Negros Island, caused a landslide in Guihulngan, a city of about 180,000 people in Negros Oriental province.  As many as 30 houses were buried and at least 29 people were missing, Mayor Ernesto Reyes said.

Reyes said that four people died there, including a student at a college and two others in an elementary school.  Another person died in the collapse of a town market.

The quake, which hit at 11:49 a.m. (3:49 a.m. GMT), triggered another landslide in the mountain village of Solongon in La Libertad town, also in Negros Oriental.  An unknown number of people were trapped, said La Libertad police chief inspector Eric Arrol Besario.

“We’re now getting shovels and chain saws to start a rescue because there were people trapped inside.  Some of them were yelling for help earlier,” Besario told The Associated Press by phone.  Three key bridges in the town suffered cracks and were no longer passable, he said.

5 dead, more missing

A child in Tayasan town was the first reported fatality a few hours after the quake.  The victim was pinned by a concrete wall that collapsed during the quake, reported the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Mayor Ernesto Reyes of Guihulngan City, also in Negros Oriental, reported that as many as 30 houses were buried by a quake-triggered landslide.

Reyes said four people were killed in the landslide and 29 more were missing.

NDRRMC executive director Benito Ramos said that he received a report that the earthquake shattered several glass panels of a shopping mall in San Carlos City.

The Associated Press reported that people rushed out of school buildings and malls during the quake.  It reported that a three-story office building collapsed in La Libertad town ,but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

A police officer reported that five bamboo and wooden cottages were washed out from a La Libertad beach resort by huge waves, but there were no reports of injuries.

Negros Oriental police chief Edward Carranza said that the temblor damaged many houses in Guihulngan, a city of about 180,000 people, and he ordered his men to help displaced residents find shelter.  A public market collapsed and a bridge in the city was damaged.

Operations in government offices and classes in all school levels in Negros, Cebu and Iloilo provinces were suspended due to the strong earthquake.

The Phivolcs raised tsunami alert level 2 after the earthquake.

The tsunami warning was raised to put on alert the residents in coastal areas, particularly in the eastern portion of eastern Negros Oriental and the western portion of Cebu province.

“People are advised to stay away from the shoreline.  People should not go to the coast to watch the tsunami.  People whose houses are very near coastal areas in Negros and Cebu islands are strongly advised to be watchful,” the agency added.

The Philippine Coast Guard also prevented all sea vessels plying Cebu and Negros provinces from making trips as long as the tsunami alert level was in place.

The tsunami alert was lifted as of 2:30 p.m.

In the Phivolcs' Earthquake Intensity Scale (PEIS), Intensity 7 was described as "destructive."  It said that during an Intensity 7 quake, people in upper floors may find it difficult to stand and heavy objects and furniture may overturn or topple.

"Old or poorly built structures suffer considerable damage.  Some well-built structures are slightly damaged," the Phivolcs said in the PEIS.

The areas of Roxas City; Dao and Ivisan in Capiz; Iloilo City; Ayungon town in Negros Oriental; Kanlaon City; Lapu-lapu City; Guimaras; Cebu City; San Carlos City; Bacolod City; Sagay City; Tagbilaran City; Candoni and Binalbagan towns Negros Occidental felt the quake at Intensity 5.

The quake was also felt at Intensity 4 in San Jose de Buenavista, Pandan, Anini-y, Patnungon towns in Antique; Kalibo in Aklan province, Dipolog City, Sipalay in Negros Occidental and Ormoc City.

It was also felt at Intensity 3 in Butuan City in Agusan del Norte; Legaspi City, Albay; Carmen, Cagayan de Oro; Tacloban City; Catbalogan; Saint Bernard, Southern Leyte; Masbate, Masbate; Cagayan de Oro City; Intensity 2 in Cabid-an, Sorsogon; Borongan, Eastern Samar; Mambajao, Camiguin and Intensity 1 in Pagadian City.

MANILA, Philippines - Five people have been reported killed after a strong quake struck parts of Visayas before noon today, which triggered landslides and destroyed houses and buildings.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) measured the earthquake at magnitude-6.9.  It said the quake, which was tectonic in origin, occurred in waters off Tayasan town in Negros Oriental at 11:49 a.m. with a depth of 10 kilometers.

The agency reported that the strong quake was followed by two aftershocks.  The first aftershock measured at magnitude-4.8 and was recorded at 12:03 p.m.  It was followed by a 5.3 magnitude aftershock at 12:20 p.m.

The quake was felt strongest at Intensity 7 in Dumaguete City and Vallehermoso town in Negros Oriental.  It was also felt at Intensity 6 in La Carlota City and La Castellana towns in Negros Oriental and Argao town in Cebu province.

Visayas hit by 6.9-magnitude earthquake

CEBU CITY -- An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 shook the Visayas islands at 11:49 a.m. today, causing a blackout in Iloilo City as well as suspension of classes in several schools and work in several government offices across the islands.

Coastal villages in Negros Oriental and the western part of Cebu have been placed on tsunami alert number 2 while the Coast Guard offices in Cebu and Iloilo have temporarily barred inter-island travel.

Four persons were rushed to Iloilo City hospitals for either having fainted or sustaining injuries during the quake.

The quake was felt strongest in Cebu, Iloilo and Negros.

PHIVOLCS director Renato U. Solidum, Jr. said on radio that the quake was tectonic in origin with a depth of 10 kilometers and with the epicenter located between Cebu and Negros islands. -- Marites Villamor-Ilano, Visayas Bureau chief

the epicenter was in toledo city in cebu.  it struck at 11:49 a.m.

we were walking at the terraces at ayala center when those huge glass panels that line the restaurants started to shake terribly.  it took me time to realize what was happening.  one of my companions pulled me to the farthest part, that means toward the grills of the balconies, away from those glass panels.  i thought that was it; the glass shattering over me.  uh-huh.

i chose to bail out of ayala center soonest.  all the buildings have been evacuated. i mean, not thoroughly evacuated but there were unusually more people outside, and they looked like office workers.

all classes from elementary to college levels have been suspended.  i rushed to school to fetch our little girl.  i saw kids (the rule was they had to be fetched, otherwise they had to stay) crying on the shoulders of their parents.  mine declared that she cried, "but only on the inside".  (i wished she can expel the terror out by crying.  oh, well, to each his own process.)  i checked on other family members.  everybody's fine.

we're now at home after extricating ourselves from a terrible traffic jam.  someone told me that our roof had rattled and all our cats tried to climb the highest possible loft that they could reach.

an unusual day, all right.  to think that i went to ayala center only to check with a bank because i've forgotten my atm pin number.

Get Out Of Toxic Relationships By Seeking Help

It’s important to remember that no matter how much you love a person, toxic relationships are bad for all involved.  It’s highly unlikely you will know about your significant other’s dark side beforehand; however, once you know about them, you need to get out of the relationship right away.  This is when you need to speak with someone you trust such as a family member, church member, social worker, etc.; anyone you believe can help you escape the relationship.

Do whatever you can to get out of those toxic relationships and don’t ever think you can change a person after you left them because chances are they won’t change.  For that reason, you should never, ever, try to get your ex back.  However, if you and your partner are willing to make a change, then consider trying to work it out.  Just bear in mind that many times people change for a short while only to go back to the way they were before, which means you’re right back in the same position you once were.

Sixth, your significant other puts down for how you look or act, all in the goal to make you feel unattractive and unintelligent.

Seventh, your significant other is overly jealous and always accuses you of cheating on him/her.

Eighth, your significant other has a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde personality; one minute he/she is very loving and sweet, the next minute they are overly mean and violent.

Ninth, your significant other has total control over your life and money, leaving you entirely dependent on him/her.

Tenth, your significant other will only go where he/she desires to go and doesn’t care to go where you would like to.

Eleventh, your significant other claims he/she loves you but doesn’t act like it.

Twelfth, your significant other always makes you feel afraid for your life.

Thirteenth, you can’t remember a time you felt happy when you were with your significant other.

First, your significant other puts you down either in public or private.

Second, your significant other doesn’t allow you to hang out with friends or family.

Third, your significant other is calling you non-stop to see what you are doing or who you are with; this happens even when you are working.

Fourth, your significant other doesn’t value any of your opinions even if the reasoning for them are important.

Fifth, you have changed who you are just to please your significant other.

Signs To Watch Out For In A Toxic Relationship

Since toxic relationships are so bad, what can you do to ensure that you stay out of one?  What signs should you be looking for?  Are there any signs that will tell you a relationship is toxic?  While there is no easy way to identify the chances of a toxic relationship before you get into one, you do have at least 13 signs to know if you are in one currently.  What are they?

This handout image provided by NASA, taken Sunday night, Jan. 22, 2012, shows a solar flare erupting on the Sun's northeastern hemisphere.  Space weather officials say the strongest solar storm in more than six years is already bombarding Earth with radiation with more to come.  The Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado observed a flare Sunday night at 11 p.m. EST. Physicist Doug Biesecker said the biggest concern from the speedy eruption is the radiation, which arrived on Earth an hour later.  It will likely continue through Wednesday.  It's mostly an issue for astronauts' health and satellite disruptions.  It can cause communication problems for airplanes that go over the poles. Stare at the red dot on this woman's nose for thirty seconds.  Then, look over at a blank white space (a piece of paper or an empty browser tab will do).  Did you see the "correct" version of the image?  Here's how it works: stare long enough at an object and the eye's photoreceptors (particularly the color-sensitive cone cells) lose sensitivity from overstimulation.  Divert the eyes to a blank space, and the surrounding cone cells send out a much stronger signal.  The brain interprets this discrepancy as looking at the precise opposite colors, in what is known as a 'negative afterimage.'  Nifty, no?
