Sheep-Herding Swedish Bunny Becomes Online Hit

STOCKHOLM â€" Champis the bunny doesn't only hop â€" he also knows how to herd his masters' flock of sheep, possibly having picked up the skill after watching trained dogs do the job.

The 5-year-old pet rabbit from the small village of Kal in northern Sweden shot to online fame last week, having garnered more than 700,000 YouTube hits so far, after a clip of his sheep herding skills surfaced on a blog.

The June video shows a persistent Champis running back and forth on the farm, trying to keep Nils-Erik and Greta Vigren's sheep together.

Greta Vigren said she first noted his talent last spring when they let out the sheep to graze for the first time after the long Swedish winter.

"He just started to behave like a sheepdog," she recalled, adding that while he likes to round up the sheep, he is consistent about leaving the farm's hens alone, treating them more gently.

"He's like a king for the whole group. He thinks he rules over both the sheep and the hens. He has a very big ego."

Dan Westman, a sheepdog breeder who shot and posted the video of his friends' bunny, said he was in awe when he first witnessed the phenomenon, noting Champis does the job even better than most dogs would.

"It's really incredible, it's a herding rabbit," he said. "He rounds them up, and if they get close to escaping through the gate he sometimes stops them," he said.

"I mean I work with sheepdogs and know how hard this is. There are very few dogs that could do what this rabbit does."

Westman, who's known both Champis and its owners for years, said the beige little mix-breed bunny had never been trained for the job but seemed to have learned the ropes all on his own.

"He's probably picked some of it up from watching the dogs," he said.

Despite his tiny size, Westman said the sheep seem to pay their minder a world of respect, letting him herd them around when he feels they need some moving.

tanan gyod hinoong relihiyon (i'm referring here to christian denominations) base their faith and form of worship on bible passages and interpret these to fit their specific beliefs and practices.  masukmagan pa ta kun lalison nato ang iglesia ni cristo (no offense meant to adherents, pero tinuod gyod kay ang ilang mga ministro trained man pod ug martial arts), which can cite bible passages that refer to its founder as the prophet from the east, or something like that.

ang maka-turn-off man god ana nila kay ang ilang pagtoo nga sila ray sakto.  mahimo ba diay na.  besides, salvation is a very personal thing.  so is my relationship with god, in whatever form i may worship him.

sa tinuod lang, mas bilib ko sa akong naamigo sa una nga american couple nga jehovah's witnesses missionaries.  gi-prangkahan dayon nako sila at the beginning nga catholic ko and i'm never going to change my religion.  they took it well.  after that, we met regularly to discuss the bible, and we were the better for it.

i learned more about the bible and was able to compare their interpretation with the catholic interpretation.  they appreciated my questions because these made them do additional research.  we became friends because they took me as their equal, not as an ignoramus whose soul needed salvation.

goodness gracious!  the latter part of the video is at gorordo avenue, right outside the colegio de la inmaculada concepcion.  the "stampede" (okay, the marathon) happened in the mid-afternoon.  i was at this school about three hours earlier, when i fetched our kid.  whew!  i'm sure i would have been a marathoner too had i been in the midst of this situation.  when everyone is running, i couldn't be selling cotton candy.

all alone am i in the house.  everyone's out and i didn't feel like going out.  not in this sunless weather.  i'd rather listen to some good, old songs and think of the guitar chords.  yeah, the word is 'think', because i gave up my guitar for the banana republic's friend some years back.  his friend, who seemed to be emotionally falling apart, had borrowed my guitar, and the banana republic felt that he needed it more than i did.  now i can't help but think of that guitar because that was the banana republic's valentine gift to me 15 years ago!

did i regret the gesture?  i don't think so.  but i did tell the banana republic that i didn't want to see that guy again.  so far, so good.

Can Tarsier Speak?: Listen To The Ultrasonic Scream of This Pint-Sized Primate

By Jackie Bargas | February 10, 2012 8:19 PM EST

Tarsiers are among the most popular in Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries. It is regarded as one of the world's smallest primates and has a length of five inches with huge round eyes.

Tarsiers communicate like humans. They use different ways to express themselves. However, it is extremely strange that some tarsiers choose to keep silent.

Tarsiers are found worldwide in the previous years, but now have settled mostly in Philippines and Borneo. Tarsiers found in these two countries are called the "ordinarily silent" type. This means that they don't produce a sound similar to what we normally observe with all the other species.

Several scientists wondered about their being silent. Many are bewildered why they aren't the same as their counterparts using their verbal calls to express something like when they are telling their rivals to keep away or making a sound that implies danger.

They generally produce audible sounds to communicate and socialize with other tarsiers. And so, the mystery with silent tarsiers begins.

Nathaniel Dominy, a Dartmouth anthropologist, worked on this secrecy.  Soon, he discovered that tarsiers were silent to our ears. They are apparently communicating through ultrasound. The silent type tarsiers are using too high frequencies for humans.

Many animals like dogs, fishes and even insects can listen to ultrasonic frequencies, but it isn't typical for mammals to communicate at this level of frequency.

Tarsiers in Borneo and Philippines are making use of ultrasonic frequencies to communicate. They're using an audible range that is absolutely beyond what other primates can listen to. The scientists say tarsiers can produce a pure ultrasonic scream at 70 kilohertz.

Given the discoveries of the research, this is completely a mysterious fact tarsiers kept for themselves. They have a secret form of communication that is associated with a shocking level of frequency.

Earth DIY â€" How to Make a Solar 55-watt Plastic Bottle Lamp!

Here’s a great way to utilize a plastic bottle, water, and film to bring natural light to your home/office without using ANY electricity.  This method basically uses film and water to disperse the sun light into indoors.  It will only work indoors but still a great way to save energy, especially each of these so-called lamps produce about 55-watts of power, more than your regular bulbs.

Here’s video on the HOWTO:

Some Specific Situations

Impaired mobility

If you cannot drop to the ground, try to sit or remain seated so you are not knocked down.  If you are in a wheelchair lock your wheels.  Protect your head and neck with a large book, a pillow, or your arms.  The goal is to prevent injuries from falling down or from objects that might fall or be thrown at you.

High-rise buildings

Drop, cover, and hold on.  Move away from windows and outside walls.  Stay in the building.  The electricity may go out, and the sprinkler systems may come on.  DO NOT use the elevators.

If you are trapped stay calm.  Try to get someone’s attention by tapping hard or metal parts of the structure.  That may increase your chances of being rescued.

Crowded indoor public places

Drop, cover, and hold on.  Do not rush for the doorways.  Others will have the same idea.  Move away from display shelves containing objects that may fall.  If you can, take cover and grab something to shield your head and face from falling debris and glass.

Stadium or theater

Stay at your seat and protect your head and neck with your arms, or any way possible. Do not leave until the shaking is over.  Then walk out carefully watching for anything that could fall in the aftershocks.

Near the shore

Drop, cover and hold on until the shaking stops.  Estimate how long the shaking lasts.  If severe shaking lasts 20 seconds or more, immediately evacuate to high ground as a tsunami might have been generated by the earthquake.  Move inland 3 kilometers (2 miles) or to land that is at least 30 meters (100 feet) above sea level immediately.  Don't wait for officials to issue a warning.  Walk quickly, rather than drive, to avoid traffic, debris and other hazards.

Below a dam

Dams can fail during a major earthquake.  Catastrophic failure is unlikely, but if you live downstream from a dam, you should know flood-zone information and have an evacuation plan.

Outdoor Safety

If you are outside, stay outside, and stay away from buildings utility wires, sinkholes, and fuel and gas lines.

The area near the exterior walls of a building is the most dangerous place to be.  Windows, facades and architectural details are often the first parts of the building to collapse.  Also, shaking can be so strong that you will not be able to move far without falling down, and objects may fall or be thrown at you.  Stay away from this danger zone--stay inside if you are inside and outside if you are outside.

If outdoors, move away from buildings, utility wires, sinkholes, and fuel and gas lines.  The greatest danger from falling debris is just outside doorways and close to outer walls.  Once in the open, get down low (to avoid being knocked down by strong shaking) and stay there until the shaking stops.

Automobiles

If you are in a moving automobile, stop as quickly and safely as possible.  Move your car to the shoulder or curb, away from utility poles, overhead wires, and under- or overpasses.  Stay in the car and set the parking brake.  Turn on the radio for emergency broadcast information.  A car may jiggle violently on its springs, but it is a good place to stay until the shaking stops.  If a power line falls on the car, stay inside until a trained person removes the wire.

When you drive on, watch for hazards created by the earthquake, such as breaks in the pavement, downed utility poles and wires, rising water levels, fallen overpasses and collapsed bridges.

tips from the Center for Diseas Controls and Prevention

During an Earthquake

Indoor Safety

If you are inside, stay inside.  DO NOT run outside or to other rooms during shaking.

In MOST situations, you will reduce your chance of injury from falling objects and even building collapse if you immediately:

DROP down onto your hands and knees before the earthquake knocks you down.  This position protects you from falling but allows you to still move if necessary.

COVER your head and neck (and your entire body if possible) under the shelter of a sturdy table or desk.  If there is no shelter nearby, get down near an interior wall or next to low-lying furniture that won't fall on you, and cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.

HOLD ON to your shelter (or to your head and neck) until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if the shaking shifts it around.

DO NOT stand in a doorway.  You are safer under a table.  In modern houses, doorways are no stronger than any other part of the house.  The doorway does not protect you from the most likely source of injuryâˆ'falling or flying objects.  Most earthquake-related injuries and deaths are caused by falling or flying objects (e.g., TVs, lamps, glass, bookcases), or by being knocked to the ground.

You can take other actions, even while an earthquake is happening, that will reduce your chances of being hurt.

If possible within the few seconds before shaking intensifies, quickly move away from glass and hanging objects, and bookcases, china cabinets, or other large furniture that could fall. Watch for falling objects, such as bricks from fireplaces and chimneys, light fixtures, wall hangings, high shelves, and cabinets with doors that could swing open.

If available nearby, grab something to shield your head and face from falling debris and broken glass.

If you are in the kitchen, quickly turn off the stove and take cover at the first sign of shaking.

If you are in bed, hold on and stay there, protecting your head with a pillow.  You are less likely to be injured staying where you are.  Broken glass on the floor has caused injury to those who have rolled to the floor or tried to get to doorways.

we had a little grill party at home.  bag-o pa kong nahuman ug panghipos ug tiwas kay gipapahuway na lang nakog una ang mga nitabang kay momata pa ra ba silag sayo.  naglurat na sad akong mata pareha gabii nga hapit na mi alas dos nga niabot sa balay gikan sa airport kay nitagbo ni banana republic.  i still enjoy this habit of counting the spoons, forks, and knives and other cutlery after a party.  i enjoy it more when nothing is misplaced.

Racial hoax causes PR headache for McDonald’s

By Zachary Roth | The Lookout â€" Mon, Jun 13, 2011

An online hoax that falsely suggests McDonald's discriminates against African-American customers is causing a PR headache for the Golden Arches.

Over the weekend, the photograph above circulated widely on the internet.  The image shows what looks like an official McDonald's notice in the window of a restaurant, telling customers that blacks will be charged $1.50 extra "as an insurance measure due in part to a recent string of robberies."

Many internet users retweeted the photo, using the words "Seriously McDonald's," to express their disapproval of the burger chain.

In response, McDonald's sent a tweet of its own on Saturday: "That pic is a senseless & ignorant hoax McD's values ALL our customers. Diversity runs deep in our culture on both sides of the counter."

But that clearly wasn't enough to clear things up, because Twitter users continued to send out the picture, with that same message of condemnation: "Seriously McDonald's." Indeed, so many people sent "Seriously McDonald's" Tweets that the phrase became a leading entry on Twitter's trend list.

That led to a second, blunter McTweet, on Sunday: "That Seriously McDonalds picture is a hoax."

The latest pushback effort seems to have helped keep the photo from spreading too much further--but there's no telling how many people out there still think the photo is for real.

This is hardly the only recent barrage of negative publicity for the burger behemoth--some of it more justified.  McDonalds CEO Jim Skinner recently was forced to defend the company's renewed use of the Ronald McDonald mascot to appeal to children, after critics said the restaurant's fat-laden burgers and fries endanger kids' health.

It's not clear who created the hoax image.  It appears to have first showed up on the popular 4chan message board, and it was posted last year on an anti-McDonald's blog.

But there's no doubt it's fake.  As some Twitter users have pointed out, the toll-free number given at the bottom of the sign is actually the number for ... Kentucky Fried Chicken.
