I don't believe in love at first site.

Emphatuation on physical attraction, sure.

But what I like is a woman's down to earth demeanor.

I am attracted to a woman's intellectual brevity.

How she speaks, carries herself....yes. sexy.

Nag graduate ko sa akong college degree sa University of Mindanao.  The school wasn't that fancy but I didn't have a hard time finding a job after I graduated.  I was not the best english speaker as those who graduated from the best schools or to those who came from family who spoke english at their respective homes, but whatever deficiency I had in that aspect, I filled it with my dedication to my work and my determination to be the best in what I was tasked to do.

Ate Ging, hard work and determination surmounts over anything. Always remember that.

I can tell you truthfully that I am an average student. I don't have a photographic memory as some of my colleagues in medicine. It is the blood, sweat, and stress of constant studying, and resiliency in never giving up that has proven effective.

Work ethic and dedication speaks about a person and illustrates the breadth of his or her drive.

The greatest physician/surgeons, lawyers, politicians, bankers, were not the ones that were the top of their class, but the ones that were the hardest workers. Because beyond memory retention, it is work ethic and a determined mind that eventually...wins the race.

God Bless!

Manay,

I agree with that jud. Networking.

I was part of two honors fraternity in college: Phi Alpha Theta (Honors History), and Beta Beta Beta (Honors Biology).

The fraternities that I belonged to helped in graduate applications.

As well as making your name known. It is all about networking and taking the initiative.

There are alot of resources that can catapult an individual to success, one has to take the reigns of the opportunities and outlets available for aid. There are hundreds if not thousands of scholarship grants out there ready to be tapped, ready to be applied and vied for.

One has to take the initiative to talk to alumni, talk to resource personnel. If you want an internship for a speciality that marks your interest, then make the first strike.

Work on volunteering programs, take leadership positions in organizations, that builds up your resume. Be competitive, be resilient and don't be afraid to speak your mind.

To be a leader is to be not afraid to talk when you have to talk. Not afraid to be corrected when you are wrong, and have the drive to infer information and correct someone/people when you know you are right.

College is the best time to tap into your personal strengths, and people to people skills.

This is my word of advice.

I attended an American Public High School, part of their Engineering Academy, which prepared me for a future in Engineering Sciences. During my high school years I was interested in going into Biomedical Engineering/ Biomechanical Engineering.

As it turned out, through the Williamstown High School Academy of Engineering Sciences, I was able to land on a medical internship: The National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine, which was held in Georgetown University.

It was in The NYLF program that I was exposed to medicine, the specialties, the career options. It was there that I grew more interested in medical sciences. Thanks to the program.

I attended the prestigious Allegheny College in Northern Pennsylvania, a private liberal arts college, which is one of the oldest private institutions in the United States. I was given an academic scholarship to Allegheny College, a scholarship program that granted me $40,000 Allegheny College Trustees Scholarship.

I was a double major in Molecular Limnology and History. I graduated Allegheny as a S.C.L.
I was exposed to hands on learning  as a biology research student, and active in teaching; worked in the side as a T.A (Teacher's Assistant) teaching molecular labs, micro labs, and history classes). Allegheny tapped on my work ethic, and exposed me to a ravenous competitive work ethic. Allegheny College taught us the meaning of work, and intellectual stimulation: sleeping for 4-5 hours a day, writing 10-15 paged papers every other day, and helping out the common man. The college embraced environmental conservatism, as well as a plethora of philantropic works including town growth, campus-town friendship collective works --> blood drives, food drives, volunteering works etc. etc. To which I can humbly say I partook of, thanks to that wonderful ALLEGHENY education.

It was one of the most intellectually stimulating times of my life, through my experiences in the Engineering Academy, which taught me leadership skills and management control, and through my hands on potential that was guaranteed in my education at Allegheny, I was motivated to pursue a medical path.

I thought about going into Podiatric Medicine and Allopathic Medicine. My stay in Allegheny College paved my way to get accepted into a medical internship at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, which guaranteed and accepted me into the Fall 2008 class. The 2 week internship was breathtaking, and showed me the multifaceted aspect of Podiatric Medicine (Medical specialty in Foot/Ankle/Lower Anatomy). For a time I was thinking about going into Podiatric Surgery, but was exposed to the different aspects of medicine in that specialty.

I was accepted to a 7 year M.D & Ph.D program at St. James School of Medicine and chose that path. With an interest in going into: Psychiatry, Internal Medicine or Surgery.

Do I think my education prepared me for my path? Absolutely.

Though I attribute academic success to three things: 1) The insitution's affiliates and 2) Personal motivation and drive. and the most important of all 3) Providence's Divine Grace...which augments personal skill/drive. especially in average students like myself.

It is a shame that some do treat the workers in subhuman standards, 'te. Fair treatment is necessary. The employer should always show respect and human decency to the workers.
Kai ang mga worker ning trabaho man jud sila para pood sa ilang pamilya.

I remember my uncle telling me that they took in people from the rural areas of Bohol, na luuy ko to hear their story. Walay papa sila, and ilang inahan dili ka provide kai gamay ra ang kwarta.

My aunts and uncles took them in, nga house workers, pero we sent them to high school, and na college na sila pood.

maka hilak ilang story. Luuy kaayo...

I think that these are just rare instances. Pocket incidences.

I know of a very wealthy family in Bohol,  family friends, and they not only pay their helpers with a fair pay, but also send them to school, and help out their families if in need.

So depende sa tawo lagi. Dili ta mo judge kai naa'y mga datu nga very humble kaajo ilang works. Di pa show, pero mo tabang man ug askan sila.

Bad thing in Spain nobody knows Rizal or his writtings or his demandings to the kingdom while he was in Spain.

Is not funny that the way to rule Spain that he was claiming in those times and that was quickly denied is how Spain is ruled nowdays? :)

In that time when only a few people ruled Spain "by birth" and the rest were just people without voice, any proposal attempting to share power was hardly rejected.

So yes, maybe he was ahead of his time :)

Regards fom Spain

He, indeed, was ahead of his time.

This great Malayan that changed not only the fate of The Philippines, but even awakened the Kingdom of Spain to reform.

Priscilla,

Its good that you two are pointing this out here.
Here in New Jersey and all over the 'states, there is a high fatality rate among teens and young adults due to drunk driving and uncontrollable speeding.

It should be mandatory to wear a helmet when driving in highways.

It isn't mandatory here in the 'states, some states allow no helmets, whereas there are some states like New Jersey that mandates helmets be worn in any motorcycle-vehicles.  Punishable by a hefty fine if broken.

Bible Study / Re: Bible Study: Tubag Bohol Version
August 28, 2009, 12:42:35 PM
Let us now examine the notion of selectivity and totality in regards to Scriptural Studies.

I personally am not comfortable when I discuss scripture with individuals who are so selective in scriptural references. Amen, I listen to their examples, but selectivity in verses and not reading the entire verse; before said verse and after said verse is something that gets me.

As I have told to my fellow Christian brothers whom I have had the pleasure in studying the Blessed Word with, it is best to study Scripture in its totality and in reading not only the words and taking the message, but also reading 'in between the lines'. :)

When you read and study the Holy Bible, read the whole book. And contemplate every single verse, every single passage, every single chapter, every single book.

---

Revelation 22:18-19 "I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book; if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away that person's share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book."

Health and Food / Elderly Depression And Dementia
August 28, 2009, 12:32:49 PM
When senior citizens become depressed, agitated, or show signs of dementia, it is often difficult to know what the best ways to keep them healthy and happy are. Before you consider long-term care as a solution, there are things you can do to keep your loved ones in their homes.

According to the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP), nearly 20 percent of those who are 55 years and older have mental disorders that are not part of normal aging. Some of the most common illnesses are anxiety, severe cognitive impairment and mood disorders.

Jeffery Lafferman, M.D., a psychiatrist at Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital's Partial Hospitalization Program and Outpatient Services, says that too often mental health illnesses are underreported. "As people age, their health needs become more complicated. Medical problems, such as high blood pressure and arthritis, are common and can mask the emotional challenges that the elderly face, until it has reached a critical stage."

But there is help and hope available. One of the ways to keep an elderly loved one at home for as long as possible when they are experiencing depression, dementia, agitation and other emotional challenges is through day treatment programs.

"Some adult day services programs are specifically designed to help elders relearn how to again be a useful part of their communities. The programs have group and individual therapy sessions in a stimulating environment. In addition, participants can reminisce with people their own age, take part in activities designed to renew their enthusiasm for life and be in their own homes in the evening," says Dr. Lafferman.

Many people do not understand that clinical depression and other mental illnesses are treatable. Some of the symptoms to look for are a change in personality, a decline in memory, isolation from friends and family, excessive feelings of guilt or hopelessness, frequent crying, sleep problems, unexplained physical illnesses, loss of function, changes in appetite, loss of interest in personal hygiene and irritability, and anxiety.

However, Dr. Lafferman advises, "Before you entrust your loved one to any program, try to visit to see with your own eyes what the program is like. Although your elder loved one needs supervision, his or her dignity must be preserved. In addition, check to see if there are medical professionals on site, and if there are different therapies to engage them."

When a loved one is experiencing emotional issues, it can also affect the whole family, so giving caregivers a break during the day is also important.

Scientists have discovered a way of allowing healthy cells to take charge of cancerous cells and stop them developing into tumours in what could provide a new approach to treating early-stage cancers.

University of Manchester researchers found that a special type of the chemicals known as 'kinase inhibitors' opened up communication channels on the surface of cells that enabled healthy cells to 'talk' to the cancer cells.

"When we added the chemicals to a mixture of healthy and cancerous cells in a flask the diseased cells stopped multiplying and began acting like normal cells again," said Dr Ian Hampson, who carried out the research with wife Dr Lynne Hampson.

"Further tests revealed that the chemicals helped the cancer cells form connections with surrounding healthy cells that allowed these normal cells to take charge of the mechanism by which cancer cells divide and grow out of control."

Cell division occurs naturally and continuously in human organs and tissue as part of the body's normal repair processes to combat wear and tear but in cancer the cells divide in an uncontrolled way.

Dr Hampson says the findings, published in the British Journal of Cancer, are all the more exciting because the chemicals, which were developed with colleagues at the University of Salford, appear to be relatively non-toxic and the positive effect on the cancer cells persists even when the chemicals are withdrawn.

"When the chemicals were added to a culture containing just cancer cells they had little effect," said Dr Hampson, who is based in Manchester's School of Cancer and Imaging Sciences. "It was only when we added the chemicals to a mixture of cancer cells and normal cells - similar to how you would find them in the body - that growth was suppressed.

"Intriguingly, the connections that allowed the healthy cells to communicate with the cancer cells stayed open even when the kinase inhibitors were removed indicating that a potential drug based on these chemicals could be given as a short course of treatment.

"Furthermore, the chemicals are non-poisonous and do not actually kill cells like conventional cancer therapies, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, so if we were able to develop a drug it is likely to have far fewer side-effects."

The team say the next stage of their research will be to find out exactly how the chemicals are able to increase the number of connections between cancer and normal cells. Once this is known, it should be possible to produce a drug based on these chemicals that could hopefully be used in humans.

Dr Lynne Hampson added: "We are currently applying for funding to carry out further research into the biochemistry of how these chemicals cause the effect we have observed. We also intend to investigate the use of different types of cell cultures to assess the potency and range of activity of these agents."

The research was funded by the Association for International Cancer Research, The Humane Research Trust, The Caring Cancer Research Trust, Kidscan and the Cancer Prevention Research Trust.

Many studies favor an extended lymphadenectomy at the time of a potentially curative gastrectomy for node-positive gastric cancer, and the risk of long-term death tends to decrease when the number of resected lymph nodes increases to about 25. However, few studies have assessed the relative contribution of the total number of resected lymph nodes to the outcome of patients with node-negative gastric cancer. Further studies are needed to know how the numbers of dissected LNs may affect the survival outcome of patients with node-negative gastric cancer.

A research article published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology addresses this question. This study was performed by a team led by Professor Chang-Ming Huang from Department of Oncology, Affiliated Union Hospital of Fujian Medical University. Two hundred and eleven patients with node-negative gastric cancer who underwent D2 curative resection were analyzed retrospectively. This article went ahead to investigate the effect of the number of lymph nodes resected in a large population of patients with node-negative gastric cancer.

The number of dissected LNs emerges as one of the most important prognostic indicators. Patients with comparable depth of invasion had a better survival as the number of resected LNs increased. The patients had better long-term survival outcomes with LN counts of > 15 for pT1-2, > 20 for pT3-4, and > 15 for the entire cohort. There was a statistically significant, negative correlation between the number of resected LNs and the recurrence rate. The study also found that the number of dissected LNs was not significantly correlated with the post-operative complication rate.

Based on their results, the authors suggest that a large number of dissected lymph nodes in the procedure of D2 dissection is recommended, in order to improve the long-term survival and reduce the recurrence rate of patients with node-negative gastric cancer. Suitable increments of the number of dissected LNs would not increase the post-operative complication rate. Therefore, this is an interesting and well-done study investigating the long-term effect of the number of resected lymph nodes on the prognosis of patients with node-negative gastric cancer.

A grandfather is a special blessing
enriching the life of a grandchild
with unique and incomparable joys.
Grandpa, you are my special joy.
I get a warm, safe, contented feeling
when I think of you.
With you, I feel no pressure to be
what someone else wants me to be;
you love me enough to let me be me.
You're never in a hurry;
you always take time to listen and to help.
You are always there for me when I need you;
You're never too busy for talks, for walks.
I can count on your wisdom,
your life experience,
your understanding heart
to help me comprehend and get through
challenges you've already faced.
You are part parent, part teacher,
part best friend.
Your strength and your easy, calm confidence
is your legacy to me,
and I love you dearly.

My Father, My Guiding Light
Dad, you’re like the sun to me,
a sure thing, always there,
beaming light and warmth on my life.
Whatever is good in me today,
I owe to your wisdom, your patience,
your strength, your love.
You taught me by example,
as a role model,
how to be my own person,
how to believe in myself,
instructing me without controlling me.
Even when we disagreed,
you held us together,
so our bond was never broken.
I understand what you did for me,
and I am so grateful that I have you
as my solid foundation, my rock.
I respect you, I admire you, I love you,

The body of St. Silvan the Martyr.

He was one of the early Christian priests/monks that came to Croatia to spread the Blessed Word.
The ground that he was martyred in, was the present ground that the Cathedral was built upon.

Since 310 A.D he has rested beautifully..
untouched by the ravages of time.
The rosary that he was burried with has rusted completely,

He was martyred in that church some 1700 years ago.

Isn't it beautiful? How God works?

Silan, in his youth, worked as a ministerial Priest/Monk in converting the pagans.
The very area where he ate, worked, and died, eventually became a strong Christian Land.

Croatia--a strongly Catholic country in South-Eastern Europe.

He was a man that was our age when he was martyred for his faith.

Nothing is more hurtful than a friend to hurt a friend, imho.
The best way to evade in being hurt again by a person whom one considered a friend is to stop associating with that person. Mao ra na jud.

So many of my friends have been hurt by their other friend talking about them.

I always tell them, "Stop associating with the person that hurts you, or those that talk about you."

Sometimes, it is necessary to burn down the bridges in life. For sometimes, some bridges lead to the wrong direction.

Just my view.

It is a mystery. Medical Science dictates that a human body will decompose by the end of the 1st week if it isn't embalmed. The human body will rigor mortize, then it will bloat, then it will liquify. All that will be left is the skeletal remains.

If embalmed, the body will last and be preserved for no more than 5~ years. Eventually it will develop mycological growth (fungal), then it will then bloat, and give in to the natural process of decay and decomposition.

However, there are instances, as seen in the bodies of the Incorruptible Saints.

Where the body is preserved for centuries and in some cases, even millenias.

It defies natural order of things.

Then again, if we believe that God can raise the dead back to life on the Last Day, who is to say that He cannot prevent the bodies of His Saints from decomposing?

Faith. There are some things that we cannot explain.

I speak as 2nd year Medical Student.
And I obey the fact that there are things that cannot be explained by science and logic.

For God works outside the understandings of Man.
Man can never fully understand God's Wonders. :)

Isaiah 55:8
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD.

I was reading a testimony by a French Surgeon, who was there when they exumed the body of St. Bernadette of Lordes in 1909, the body of the Saint was clothed in her Ministerial Order, the only part of the body that was exposed was her face and her hands.

No smell of human decomposition was present, they examined her body, to notice that her body was perfectly preserved. No markings of embalming.

And even embalming can only delay decomposition for 2-5 years at most.
The natural order of the human body wills it that the cells will break down and release proteases, and kinases as well as cytoplasmic granules that will lead to the breakdown of tissue, ligaments, and even bone.

The body of St. Bernadette had no odor of decay, rather, they could still see the veins in her hands, and her nails were perfectly preserved. Her clothing was riddled dust, and the rosary that was in her hand was rusting, but her skin and her body has remained unaffected.

For over 100 years it has not decayed.

-----

St. Bernadette was a sickly woman in life. But her vow to Christ was as powerful.
The preservation of her body is a testament to the Power of God.
Who defies nature, for He created and wrote Nature.

Jesus replied, "What is impossible with men is possible with God."

Lyrics

My Jesus, my Saviour
Lord there is none like You
All of my days I want to praise
The wonders of Your mighty love

My comfort, my shelter
Tower of refuge and strength
Let every breath, all that I am
Never cease to worship You

Shout to the Lord
All the Earth, let us sing
Power and majesty
Praise to the King
Mountains bow down
And the seas will roar
At the sound of Your name

I sing for joy at the works
Of Your hands
Forever I'll love You
Forever I'll stand
Nothing compares
To the promise I have
In You

This song is a song that Job, Teresa, Albert and I sing in the Choir. Its a beautiful introductory song before mass begins. This is a new song we implemented, but was received warmly by the congregation and by our parish priest, Fr. Ranulfo (who is Cebuano, btw). :)

I love this song.

It pierces the soul, and awakens the spirit. hehe

amen! amen!

When people curse and yell at us, we should be the better person and not return their disgusting habit. Instead of cursing, we should BLESS THEM. pray for them lang.

Give ear to Christ and His Words and put a deaf ear to the temptations of the devil.

Todos necesitan,
amor que nunca falla,
Tu gracia y compasión,
Todos necesitan,
perdón y esperanza,
de un Dios que salva

Cristo, puede mover montes,
Solo Dios puede salvar,
Mi Dios puede salvar,
Por siempre, autor de salvación,
Jesús la muerte venció,
Él la muerte venció

Aun con mis temores,
Sé que me aceptas,
Una y otra vez,
Mi vida entera ofrezco,
Para seguir tus pasos,
A ti me rindo… (a ti me rindo)
En la tierra,
tu luz brillará, Cantamos,
por la gloria,
De tu majestad, Jesús

Question: "What is true friendship according to the Bible?"

Answer: The Lord Jesus Christ gave us the definition of a true friend: "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you" (John 15:13-15). Jesus is the pure example of a true friend, for He laid down His life for His "friends." What is more, anyone may become His friend by trusting in Him as his personal savior, being born again and receiving new life in Him.

There is an example of true friendship between David and Saul's son Jonathan, who, in spite of his father Saul's pursuit of David and attempts to kill him, stood by his friend. You will find that story in 1 Samuel chapter 18 through chapter 20. Some pertinent passages are 1 Samuel 18:1-4; 19: 4-7; 20:11-17, 41-42.

Proverbs is another good source of wisdom regarding friends. "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity" (Proverbs 17:17). "A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother" (Proverbs 18:24). The issue here is that in order have a friend, one must be a friend. "Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses" (Proverbs 27:6). " As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another" (Proverbs 27:17).

The principle of friendship is also found in Amos. "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" (Amos 3:3 KJV). Friends are of like mind. The truth that comes from all of this is a friendship is a relationship that is entered into by individuals, and it is only as good or as close as those individuals choose to make it. Someone has said that if you can count your true friends on the fingers of one hand, you are blessed. A friend is one whom you can be yourself with and never fear that he or she will judge you. A friend is someone that you can confide in with complete trust. A friend is someone you respect and that respects you, not based upon worthiness but based upon a likeness of mind.

Finally, the real definition of a true friend comes from the Apostle Paul: "For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:7-8). "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends." (John 15:13). Now, that is true friendship!

Galing lang wa may picture si Saint Vincent de Paul, dili man makita. Mao ra ba ni ang santos diin gipangan ko sa ahong inahan.

Am inspired that you have an interest in Blessed St. Vincent De Paul.
He was a good and holy man; he was a Catholic Priest, born to a very poor peasant family. He was enslaved by the Turks as a young man, but escaped with his master, who he converted to Christianity (Thanks be to God!).

St. Vincent became a priest and dedicated his life in feeding and preaching to the poor, and was involved against the Jansenist Heresy of his day.

His was a life with the poor, sickness, caring for the ill, and preaching the WORD OF GOD.

Pray for Us. St. Vincent De Paul.
Amen.

here is a picture of St. Vincent De Paul:

St. Vincent De Paul,
his body has been untouched by the ravages of time.

The Lord Jesus Christ tells us there would be few who will find salvation, many loose their way, many fall into their sins, many have lost their will to find HIM.

Is it too late? Of course Not! Repent and Be Saved!

---

12Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

13Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

-Matthew 7:12-14

When you talk, be subtle and decisive. Be direct, and most of to the face.

When I talk to you, I will talk to you one on one. (As my patients and my colleagues will verify).

I don't like it when a person talks to me but does not look at me face to face. Impolite and rude; its a sign of a lacking social etiquette.

Think clearly, think directly. Let your words reflect your mind.

Because some will psychoanalyze. :)
