Toaster makes Jesus image - every slice

A US firm has created a toaster that creates an image of Jesus on every single slice it creates.

Vernon-based Burnt Impressions created the Jesus Toaster which is on sale for the equivalent of £22.

Creator Galen Diveley came up with the idea after reports of people seeing apparitions of Jesus in slices of toast, and other inanimate objects.

Dieters can now burn off calories even while eating - thanks to a bizarre set of dumbbell cutlery. The extraordinary heavy-duty chrome knife and fork weigh one kilogram each, which is the equivalent of a bag of sugar. And the spoon alone weighs in at two kilograms - heavier than a complete 32 piece set of stainless steel cutlery. The creations, called Eat Fit Cutlery, have been dubbed the perfect aid for 'gluttons in need of a work out'. However, the price tag is just as hefty as the product with all three costing £69.99 in total. Photo: Rex

'Dead' woman climbs out of coffin

29 February 2012

A 95-year-old grandmother terrified her neighbors in China - by climbing out of her coffin six days after she 'died'.

Li Xiufeng was found motionless and not breathing in bed by her neighbor more than a fortnight after tripping and suffering a head injury.

When he failed to wake her up, Chen Qingwang assumed the frail grandmother had passed away in her sleep, in the village of Liulou, in Beiliu, Guangxi Province.

Recounting his daily visit to bring the elderly lady breakfast, Mr Qingwang, 60, said: "She didn't get up, so I came up to wake her up."

"No matter how hard I pushed her and called her name, she had no reactions. I felt something was wrong, so I tried her breath, and she has gone, but her body is still not cold."

According to tradition, the 'dead' woman was laid in her coffin ahead of the funeral for friends and relatives to pay their respects.

But the day before the funeral, Mr Qingwang arrived at his neighbour's house to find the coffin empty and the corpse gone.

"We were so terrified, and immediately asked the neighbours to come for help," he said.

After searching for the missing body, the villagers were stunned to find Mrs Xiufeng sitting on a stool in her kitchen cooking.

She reportedly told villagers: "I slept for a long time. After waking up, I felt so hungry, and wanted to cook something to eat. I pushed the lid for a long time to climb out."

A county hospital reportedly believes Mrs Xiufeng suffered an artificial death, during which the person has no breath, but the body remains warm.

How do you spell ‘wah?’

Upon a motion from the House deputy lead prosecutor, Ilocos Norte Representative Rodolfo Fariñas, this unparliamentary remark was later stricken from the record, with no objection from Santiago herself.

Scolding the prosecution, the senator said the prosecution was “playing games” with senator-judges in dropping the five articles after promising earlier to present about 100 witnesses.

“I was not born yesterday. We will be studied generations from now. This is a travesty. I request the secretariat to record in the journal that I said, ‘Wah!’” she said.

Santiago repeated this expression three times.

After the blast, Sotto said that Senator Serge Osmeña had asked, “What’s the spelling of ‘Wah?’”

No one asked Santiago what that term of endearment was all about.

‘Gago’

Wednesday’s action-packed hearing was heralded by Santiago’s manifestation virulently attacking the prosecution for dropping five of the eight articles of impeachment against Corona.

She spewed out highly unpleasant remarks, but the House lead prosecutor, Iloilo Representative Niel Tupas Jr., meekly held his peace throughout the tense trial.

“I felt like creeping back into bed and adopting a fetal position, which is the normal reaction of any sane person when he’s faced with a world that is crumbling around him. I no longer know what universe I’m in … because I’ve never seen this done to a judge before,” Santiago said.

She blasted the prosecution, calling it names such as the offensive word, “gago.”

the ears have it! ;D

from http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/:

“I charge this private prosecutor with contempt of this impeachment court! I have evidence right here taken by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, and to say that nasaktan ang tenga ko (my ears hurt) should have been (a cause) for you to walk out of this impeachment court. But you cannot make those contemptuous gestures in front of a judge, and get away with it,” Santiago declared.

Cayetano himself took the picture using his cellular phone camera.

Santiago made the motion to cite Aguirre in contempt soon after the volunteer lawyer candidly admitted to the impeachment court that he did cover his ears.

“That’s true because my ears already hurt,” Aguirre said, while being questioned by Senate President Pro Tempore Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada.

Estrada had inquired into Aguirre’s motive for publicly displaying his disdain for Santiago.

“It seemed that you don’t want to listen to her,” Estrada said. “That’s disrespect for a member of this court.”

Aguirre argued that he had to cover his ears because he did not agree with Santiago’s position that it was not usual for lawyers to withdraw, or amend their complaints.

“This happens every day. The fact is that this is the first time that I experienced in my 40 years of practice that a judge would lecture his lawyers. That’s not proper,” Aguirre said.

All about respect

Told by Estrada that he should have objected to Santiago’s manifestation, Aguirre retorted that he had “no right to object.”

Under the Senate rules, private prosecutors are under the supervision of the prosecution panel and can not debate with the senators.

Aguirre said: “May I say something? If my actuation has hurt somebody, I really did it purposely because my ears were hurting from her shrill voice. My point here is that even if we’re mere lawyers, we also deserve respect. If you demand respect, respect also these lawyers because human dignity has no equal.”

i got it from the horse's mouth last night; i don't know how true this is as this is only one side of the story and is not in the news.  one can smell something political here and the probable gamesmanship of search-and-destroy...

one of the major stockholders of prudentialife is allegedly close to former president gma.  considering the current government administration's "drive against corruption" by whatever means, which from the looks of it covers anyone with some kind of connection to the former president, the "germ of an idea" that prudentialife is getting bankrupt was planted, causing withdrawals and non-payments by its clients.  it's no different from a bank run.  so the bankruptcy became real in a sense because the firm ended up not balancing its books, especially as it had to  meet the demands of withdrawals and claims.  it was attacked by forces over which it had no control.

wow!  it's a great read, hubag.  thanks for the lead.  it's been a while since i came across something this good.  among many striking points, here's one i took to heart:

If this myth is tragic, that is because its hero is conscious.  Where would his torture be, indeed, if at every step the hope of succeeding upheld him?  The workman of today works everyday in his life at the same tasks, and his fate is no less absurd.  But it is tragic only at the rare moments when it becomes conscious.  Sisyphus, proletarian of the gods, powerless and rebellious, knows the whole extent of his wretched condition: it is what he thinks of during his descent.  The lucidity that was to constitute his torture at the same time crowns his victory.  There is no fate that can not be surmounted by scorn.

                                                                                - Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus

Race against the tide: Bravery of young mother who stayed by her horse's side for THREE HOURS after getting trapped in mud 'like quicksand'

By Richard Shears
29th February 2012

This was the terrifying moment a brave young mother battled to keep her beloved horse calm as sea water closed in on the animal after he became trapped in mud 'like quicksand'.

Exhausted and mud-splattered, Nicole Graham clung to her trapped horse Astro for three hours keeping his head high in a race against the tide.

The 78-stone show horse had sunk into quagmire-like mud and was facing the prospect of drowning as the water rose around them.

'Like quicksand': Both Miss Graham and her horse were stuck up to their waists in the mud as the tide was closing in

Desperation: Nicole Graham comforts her 18-year-old show horse Astro after he gets stuck in coastal mud as the tide comes in

Swallowed up: Astro was stuck fast and Miss Graham's efforts to pull him free only resulted in herself sinking deeper into the quagmire

Miss Graham had been out on an afternoon ride with her daughter along the coast near Geelong, south of Melbourne, when 18-year-old Astro suddenly sank into the mud.

Before she could shout a warning, the smaller horse her daughter Paris was riding was also partially swallowed up by the mud.

After dragging herself through the mire, Miss Graham helped her daughter and the other horse on to firmer ground.

However, Astro was stuck fast and her efforts to pull him free only resulted in herself sinking deeper into the quagmire.

UST scientists: Virgin coco oil has beneficial effects on cholesterol, sex

By: Kristine L. Alave
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"A team of scientists and doctors from the University of Sto. Tomas said Wednesday a clinical study they conducted showed that taking virgin coconut oil, or VCO, had beneficial effects on one’s cholesterol level.

A research team led by Dr. Christina Binag of the UST Research Center for Natural and Applied Science said the double-blind study, where both researchers and subjects were not aware of who were taking VCO and the placebo, showed decreases in triglycerides and very low density lipoprotein, which is considered bad cholesterol.

The subjects in the four-month study, which was commissioned by the Philippine Coconut Authority, also showed elevated high-density lipoprotein, or good cholesterol.  No change was seen with low-density lipoprotein.

“This improved HDL ratio can be translated to making the individual less prone to having heart attack or stroke,” the team said in its report.  No change was seen in the lipid profile of the placebo group.

“Other parameters were likewise affected by VCO.  There was unexplained rise in creatinine but still within the normal range.  Elevations in Free Thyroid 3 and Free Thyroid 4 were noted due to enhanced thyroid function.  No change was noted with BMI [body mass index] and weight.”

Aside from these clinical effects, the group also reported that those who took the VCO felt stronger and healthier.  They reported regular bowel movement, increase in appetite and stamina, and better sleep with regular VCO intake of 3 tablespoons a day.

Some members of the group also said they were more virile during the test phase.  “It was an interesting observation that 13 percent of the VCO takers experienced becoming sexually active in the whole duration of their participation in the VCO study,” the team said.

“Hindi lang pang-gata, pang sex pa,” said Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala.

He hailed the study, noting that it would help the Department of Agriculture market  VCO.

“In the past, we only heard anecdotes of the benefits.  Now, it’s the doctors and scientists who have confirmed it,” he said.

The VCO takers also reported negative effects such as stomach ache, soft bowels, sweating and nausea.

T. rex bite was world's strongest

By Victoria Gill
Science reporter, BBC Nature
29 February 2012

The researchers mapped the jaw muscles (red) and pressure sensors (blue) onto their digital T. rex skull

Tyrannosaurus rex had the most powerful bite of any creature that has ever walked the Earth, say scientists.

Previous estimates of the prehistoric predator's bite suggested it was much more modest - comparable to modern predators such as alligators.

This measurement, based on a laser scan of a T. rex skull, showed that its bite was equivalent to three tonnes - about the weight of an elephant.

(The findings are published in the journal Biology Letters.)

Dr Karl Bates from the biomechanics laboratory at the University of Liverpool led the research.

He and his colleague, Peter Falkingham from the University of Manchester, used the life-sized copy of a T. rex skeleton exhibited at Manchester Museum as a model for their study. "We digitised the skull with a laser scanner, so we had a 3-D model of the skull on our computer," Dr. Bates explained.

"Then we could map the muscles onto that skull."

The scientists then reproduced the full force of a bite by activating the muscles to contract fully - snapping the digital jaws shut.

"Those [simulated] muscles closed the jaw as they would in life and... we measured the force when the teeth hit each other," Dr Bates explained to BBC Nature.

"The maximum forces we found - up at the [back] teeth - were between 30,000 and 60,000 Newtons," he said.

"That's equivalent to a medium-sized elephant sitting on you."

obviously naiwit ko sa news, though there's really nothing i can do about it even if i knew ahead.  akong kalagutan kay insurance man god at the same time kining akong gi-invest.  according to this pre-need's agent who's a ranking insider, naangin kuno ang prudentialife sa legacy ug bolante cases.  nag-domino diay ang effects of alleged corruption.

The primary sleuth in unmasking his fabrication of the apple story was Kenneth Waltzer, director of Jewish studies at Michigan State University. He has been working on a book on how 904 boys â€" including the Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel â€" were saved from death by an underground rescue operation inside Buchenwald, and has interviewed hundreds of survivors, including boys from the ghetto at Piotrkow in Poland who were taken with the young Herman Rosenblat to the camp.

When Dr. Waltzer asked other survivors who were with Mr. Rosenblat about the tossed apple story, they said the story couldn’t possibly be true.

In his research of maps drawn by ex-prisoners, Dr. Waltzer learned that the section of Schlieben where Mr. Rosenblat was housed had fences facing other sections of the camp and only one fence â€" on the south â€" facing the outside world. That fence was adjacent to the camp’s SS barracks and the SS men there would have been able to spot a boy regularly speaking to a girl on the other side of the fence, Dr. Waltzer said. Moreover, the fence was electrified and civilians outside the camp were forbidden to walk along the road that bordered the fence.

Dr. Waltzer also learned from online documentation that Ms. Radzicki, her parents and two sisters were hidden as Christians at a farm not outside Schlieben but 210 miles away near Breslau.

Holocaust survivors and scholars are fiercely on guard against any fabrication of memories because they taint the truth of the Holocaust and raise doubts about the millions who were killed or brutalized.

“There’s no need to embellish, no need to aggrandize,” said Deborah E. Lipstadt, the Dorot professor of modern Jewish and Holocaust studies at Emory University. “The facts are horrible, and when you’re teaching about horrible stuff you just have to lay out the facts.”

i myself wished it were really true.  knowing it isn't is like knowing that there's no santa claus after all.  diha nadaot ang estorya sa fact of passing it on as true.  it could have inspired as well if it were presented as fiction right from the beginning.

After several scholars and family members attacked Mr. Rosenblat’s story in articles last week in The New Republic, Mr. Rosenblat confessed on Saturday to Ms. Hurst and Mr. Salomon that he had concocted the core of his tale. Ms. Hurst said that in an emotional telephone call with herself and Mr. Salomon, Mr. Rosenblat said his wife had never tossed him apples over the fence.

In a statement released through his agent, Mr. Rosenblat wrote that he had once been shot during a robbery and that while he was recovering in the hospital, “my mother came to me in a dream and said that I must tell my story so that my grandchildren would know of our survival from the Holocaust.”

He said that after the incident he began to write. “I wanted to bring happiness to people, to remind them not to hate, but to love and tolerate all people,” he wrote in the statement. “I brought good feelings to a lot of people and I brought hope to many. My motivation was to make good in this world. In my dreams, Roma will always throw me an apple, but I now know it is only a dream.”

False Memoir of Holocaust Is Canceled

Herman Rosenblat and his wife, Roma Radzicki Rosenblat, at home in Florida. The story of their meeting
while he was in a concentration camp during World War II has been shown to be false.

A man whose memoir about his experience during the Holocaust was to have been published in February has admitted that his story was embellished, and on Saturday evening his publisher canceled the release of the book.

And once again a New York publisher and Oprah Winfrey were among those fooled by a too-good-to-be-true story.

This time, it was the tale of Herman Rosenblat, who said he first met his wife while he was a child imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp and she, disguised as a Christian farm girl, tossed apples over the camp’s fence to him. He said they met again on a blind date 12 years after the end of war in Coney Island and married. The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary this year.

Ms. Winfrey, who hosted Mr. Rosenblat and his wife, Roma Radzicki Rosenblat, on her show twice, called their romance “the single greatest love story” she had encountered in her 22 years on the show. On Saturday night, after learning from Mr. Rosenblat’s agent that the author had confessed that the story was fabricated, Berkley Books, a unit of Penguin Group that was planning to publish “Angel at the Fence,” Mr. Rosenblat’s memoir of surviving in a sub-camp of Buchenwald with the help of his future wife, canceled the book and demanded that Mr. Rosenblat return his advance.

Harris Salomon, who is producing a movie based on the story, said he would go ahead with the film, but as a work of fiction, adding that Mr. Rosenblat had agreed to donate all earnings from the film to Holocaust survivor charities.

From butt of jokes in 1986, Philippines has risen to creditor nation, says ex-finance chief

By Tonette Orejas
Inquirer Central Luzon
Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

CITY OF SAN FERNANDOâ€"Who is having the last laugh now?

The joke going around the world in 1986 was that the Philippines had no money but it had a ministry of finance.

This is no longer true, the finance secretary during the Corazon Aquino administration, Jesus Estanislao, said here Saturday during observance rites of the 26th anniversary of the People Power Revolution.

The Philippines is now a creditor, rather than a debtor, nation, said Estanislao.

The biting joke about the Philippines was sprung on Estanislao when he went to Italy, Spain and other rich countries in 1986 to borrow money to revive the Philippine economy following the ouster of strongman Ferdinand Marcos.

Estanislao was chairman of the Development Bank of the Philippines then.

“In one country, I was supposed to meet the minister of snow. I said, ‘How can you have a ministry of snow when you do not have snow?’ And an official said to me, ‘In the Philippines, you don’t have money but you have a ministry of finance.’”

“Twenty-six years ago, we had no international reserves, we couldn’t pay our debts and we kept borrowing. Now our reserves amount to $80 billion and we have lent $500 million to the [International Monetary Fund] that in turn lent the money to Spain and Italy,” he said.

dear whoever you are,

maybe it's not really the plastic surgery, which your wife may have resorted to not so much out of vanity (come on, all women are, in varying degrees) but also in her hope of getting back your attention.  she was wrong, of course, because there's more to life than looks and she ended up with the wrong kind of attention from you, which was abhorrence.

you mentioned that you've worked your asses off in pursuit of financial gains.  somewhere along the way, something was lost between you.  that's pretty obvious.  but it looks like you put the blame squarely on your wife, perhaps forgetting that in a partnership like a marriage, one makes up for the other.

it takes two to tango may be trite, but then even the greatest of ballerinas like margot fonteyn would need a rudolf nureyev to carry them in a pas de deux.  it's not the other way around; try figuring out if fonteyn can ever carry nureyev.

it seems to me that you wrote your thoughts down in your letter to make yourself feel better about your own infidelities.  you failed to mention how you felt over your wife's betrayals; did you tacitly encourage her so you could be free yourself?

everything is now water under the bridge, or so it seems.  you gain some, you lose some.  money came, and your marriage hit the rocks.  and now you write to justify yourself?

i'm glad you wrote to emily and not to

islander,

nakahunahuna baya ko ana, dot com.  kutob ra sa hunahuna ug aso kay first, there was no permanent stenographer.  every time i went to court for a session, there was always a different woman who acted as stenographer.  and they had the same stand.

second, i wanted the case over and done with the soonest.  i was about to leave the country and i couldn't let it hang.

third, the burden of proof was on me, naturally.  there were no receipts, no signed acknowledgments.

fourth, that silly lawyer of mine had to protect his own standing with those bitches who can make or break his cases by delaying their schedules ad nauseam.

what a place to be, between the devil and the deep blue sea.
