islander, i think dolphy's charm lies on the fact that he can make women laugh?

well, while a sense of humor is essential, i believe it's not everything in a relationship, as you may know.  i have a friend who's one of the funniest i've met, even the sight of him is enough to make one laugh.  but he's not very lucky when it comes to relationships.

in the case of dolphy, whose funny bone is said to be limited to acting, in private life he's very reserved and steadfast, accordingly.  his charm i guess is in his being a very thoughtful real gentleman.  any woman would feel that she's a queen.  not one to take anyone for granted, reports said that he even personally brought a bouquet to alma moreno, on the occasion of a certain movie awarding affair years ago, after their split!

not to be overlooked of course is the practical aspect; like ramon revilla sr., obviously he can afford, and was ready to support, all his "families" and recognized and respected all his children.  (ugh.  it seems all those things i've read all these years are coming back, hehe.  mora man sad kog korek ani.)

guwapo kuno ni si dolphy, ingon akong papa.  very far from the dolphy seen in the movies; guwapo nga mestisohon, hilomon, very decent and formal, a real gentleman, my father said.

dolphy was one of the volunteer security men on motorcycles who volunteered during the 1965 400th year observance of the philippines' christianization in cebu.   it was one of the country's biggest celebration in a century.  my father saw him there.  i had to tell this extra story because you might think that my father was an actor too.  he was not, though he was equally handsome, hahaha!

no greater love tingali... pero ambot unsay dagon aning dolphy.  (tingalig mangita na pod ug kuko ani si bugsay aron makakiskis.)  imagine, remember pilar pilapil?  well, i know her first cousin, who told the story that pilar had everything bad to say about the late doy laurel (she shacked up with him for years) but everything good to say about dolphy.  given the chance to live her life all over again, she would still choose to marry dolphy, the cousin quoted pilar as saying.

kini pod si zsazsa, 16 years old pa, naminyo na.  nag-attend pa tawon siyag 4th year high school class, iyang classmates nahibung na nga naa silay mamdos nga kauban with the quaint name of esperanza tatlonghari.  by the time she turned 24 and had an 8-year-old daughter (karylle, now a singer), she left her husband (a dentist) and child to shack up with dolphy.

from the looks of it, dolphy it seems never married anyone.  he may die a bachelor.  ulitawong guwang. ???

and now it's monday.  so what did i do today?  well, obviously reviewing what happened during the weekend.  i'm scheduled to do some considerable laundry hand washing today.  i'm going to like it.  it's the ironing that i hate, huhuhu.  but before that i'll read, read, read.  too bad i couldn't read chinese and cyrillic. ;D

sunday.  cat food and cat litter were down to the last.  so i called a tricycle driver from across the street who has become my "suki"; a tricycle ride is a straight ride to my source of pet things.  a jeepney would mean two excruciating rides while a taxi is untrustworthy.  it turns out that the tricycle driver had lost everything in the fire.  he said he's glad that his family is safe.  he was sleepless, though, and his family now has to make do with the sidewalk.  so i understood why the ride was very bumpy.

it's not easy to look at tragedy this close and personal.  what else was there to do but pay him many times more than the usual fare?  he expressed his thanks profusely over and over...  oh, well, there are many ways of expressing gratitude.  the extra fare i gave was my way.

last saturday at almost midnight, a big fire broke out right across the street.  3 kids, all toddlers, perished.

i was ready, in case.  our two recently-rescued-off-the-street kittens were already in their carrier, and beside the carrier was my permanent "emergency bag" (containing valuables, legal documents, some cash, and a change of clothes).  i figured i can carry both while running.  and since we just came from watching a pyromusical contest (china vs. the netherlands in this instance) at the mall of asia and hadn't changed to house clothes, i simply changed from high heels to running shoes.

glad we heard an anticipated mass before the pyromusical contest.

wondering, awed, wondering more why i find myself often near disasters.

last year i was in a tsunami-prone area where we were asked to go to higher ground.

a couple of years before that a series of fires in two places hit our next-door neighbors.  then a big flood hit one place where we stored most of our household things.  the damage was immeasurable.  most of our glassware was broken.  (henceforth, i stopped collecting.)

i was in cebu when the earthquake struck.  (to count my blessings, at least i wasn't in negros oriental.  but that's small comfort considering the lives lost.)

"COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR PARENTS AND CLEAN YOUR ROOM!!!  BUT TAKE THIS TERRIBLE VIDEO DOWN YOU ARE A CHILD AND SHOULD NOT HAVE THIS KIND OF ACCESS TO THE INTERNET," one commenter screams.

Emilie Zaslow, a media studies professor at Pace University in New York, said today's online world for young people is only just beginning to be understood by researchers.

When the Internet is your diary and your audience is global, she said, "The public posting of questions such as "Am I ugly?" which might previously have been personal makes sense within this shift in culture."

Add to that the unattainable pressures of the beauty industry, a dose of reality TV, where ordinary people can be famous, and superstars who are discovered via viral video on YouTube, she said.

"These videos could be read as a new form of self-mutilation in line with cutting and eating disorders," Zaslow said.

That potential is real, added Nadine Kaslow, a family psychologist and professor of behavioral sciences at Emory University in Atlanta.

"There's this constant messaging about looks and beauty," she said. "Their world is taking it to a new level.  It can be humiliating, there may be a lot of shame, and you start to become public objects instead of being your own person."

In another video posted by Kendal, she offers to "do two dares" on camera, inviting her open-channel audience to come up with some as she holds a little white stuffed monkey.

In heavy eye makeup and neon orange nail polish, a girl who calls herself Faye not only asks the pretty/ugly question but tells in other videos of being bullied at school, suffering migraines that have sent her to the hospital and coping with the divorce of her parents.

"My friends tell me that I'm pretty," she says.  "It doesn't seem like I'm pretty, though, because, I don't know, it just doesn't, because people at school, they're like, 'Faye you're not pretty at all.'"

She narrates a slideshow of still close-ups of herself to make the judging easier (she's had more than 112,000 views) and joins other girls who have posted videos on another theme, "My Perfect Imperfection," that have them noting what they hate and love about the way they look.

"I just don't like my body at all," says Faye as she pulls up her sweat shirt to bare her midriff.

Faye's profile lists her age as 13.

A third girl who uploaded one of the pretty/ugly videos in September attempts a few model poses in childlike pedal pushers and a long, multicolored T-shirt after posing the question.  She takes down her ponytail and brushes her hair as she stares into the camera.

"If you guys are wondering, I am 11," she offers.  Her video has been viewed more than 6,000 times.

How could the creators not anticipate the nasty responses, even the tender tweens uploading videos in violation of YouTube's 13-and-over age policy?

Commenters curse and declare them "attention whores," ask for sex and to see them naked.  They wonder where their parents are and call them "fugly" and worse.

"Y do you live, and kids in africa die?" one responder tells the girl in the koala hat who uses the name Kendal and lists her age as 15 in her YouTube profile, though her demeanor suggests she was far younger at the time.

Another commenter posts: "You need a hug.. around your neck.. with a rope.."

Some offer support and beg Kendal and the other young faces to take down their "Am I Pretty?" and "Am I Ugly?" videos and feel good about themselves instead.

Much has been made of cyberbullying and pedophiles who cruise the Internet, and of low self-esteem among pre-adolescents and adolescents, especially girls, as their brains continue to develop.

There have been similar "hot or not" memes in the past, but as more young people live their lives online, they're clearly more aware of the potential for negative consequences.

"Negative feedback that is personal is rarely easy to hear at any age, but to tweens and teens who value as well as incorporate feedback into their own sense of worth, it can be devastating," said Elizabeth Dowdell, a nursing professor at Villanova University in suburban Philadelphia who has researched child Internet safety and risk behavior in adolescents in partnership with the Justice Department.

YouTube phenomenon has girls asking: Am I Pretty?

philstar.com
March 04, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) â€" The young girl shows off her big, comfy koala hat and forms playful hearts with her fingers as she drops the question on YouTube: "Am I pretty or ugly?"

"A lot of people call me ugly, and I think I am ugly.  I think I'm ugly, and fat," she confesses in a tiny voice as she invites the world to decide.

And the world did.

The video, posted Dec. 17, 2010, has more than 4 million views and more than 107,000 anonymous, often hateful responses in a troubling phenomenon that has girls as young as 10 â€" and some boys â€" asking the same question on YouTube with similar results.

Some experts in child psychology and online safety wonder whether the videos, with anywhere from 300 to 1,000 posted, represent a new wave of distress rather than simple self-questioning or pleas for affirmation or attention.

a personal experience:

in my college class before when i taught part time, i gave a bonus test question of what the names of the 7 dwarfs are in snow white.  maldita ang usa ka student kay she wrote down the names of the 7 boys in class (in that exclusive college for girls, boys were accepted as long as their course is bachelor of music).  naatol pod intawon nga 7 ra ang boys out of a class of 36.  not wanting to be outwitted by a student, i did what i had to do when time came to give back the checked and graded test papers...

ingrid here has the best answer to the bonus question, i announced.  will the following dwarfs please stand up as i call your name?  (i had the last laugh.  one of the boys was ingrid's boyfriend.) ;D

9. In 1981, I met Alma Moreno.  We have a son, Vandolph.  Why did we break up?  Ayoko na lang mag-elaborate.  Basta, nahirapan ako sa lifestyle niya.

10. Nang naging kami ni Zsa Zsa, nabulabog ang buhay namin.  Nawalan ako ng show; tinanggal ang mga commercials ko.  At that time, we seriously thought of living in the States.  Nakabili na nga kami ng bahay doon, eh.

11. Zsa Zsa and I have a daughter, si Zia.  We also have an adopted daughter, si Nicole who was just a few months old nang ibigay sa akin ng nanay niyang Amerikana.  Nasa Hizon’s ako noon.

6. In the late ’60s while we were shooting in a hospital, I met a nurse, Evangeline Tagulao.  Nagkaroon kami ng isang anak.  Nasa States na sila ngayon.

7.I met Pilar Pilapil in 1969 when we shot Tayo’y Mag-Up, Up and Away in Rome, Paris, London, New York, Hawaii and Las Vegas.  That was two years after she won the Bb. Pilipinas-Universe title.  We almost got married.  Ayaw ng parents niya.

8. Then, I fell in love with Lotis Key.  I also almost married her.  Ang mga babae ko, kadalasan nagkakasabay-sabay, nag-o-overlap sila.

DOLPHY , his children and his women

Now that ZsaZsa Padilla is free to marry, will there be wedding bells for her and domestic patner Dolphy?  Rumors said that the children of Dolphy with other women are against the marriage.  Zsazsa`is definitely the last woman in Dolphy's life.

Who were Dolphy's women?

From the 80 questions about Dolphy when he celebrated his 80th birthday here are some of the names as well as his children.

1. My first love was Aida Javier who came from a family of musicians.  Mahusay siya mag-piano.

2. I met Engracia Dominguez â€" si Gracia â€" sa stage show.  In our skit, she stood motionless, kunwari portrait, habang kinakantahan ko ng Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa. Nagkaroon kami ng anim na anak â€" Manny, Salud, Rodolfo Jr., Freddie, Edgar and Raul.  Gracia and I separated in 1963.

Freddie died in 2005.

3. I fell in love with a fellow Sampaguitan but I’d rather not reveal who she was. Sa amin na lang ‘yon.  She’s now in America.

4. I met Gloria Smith in 1956.  Nagkaroon kami ng apat na anak â€" Mariquita, Carlos, Geraldino and Edwin.

5. I met Baby Smith.  Artista rin siya, Pamela Ponti ang screen name.  She was 17, I was 36. Nagkaroon kami ng apat na anak â€" Ronaldo, Enrico, Madonna and Jeffrey.

partial pa nga estorya ang niabot nako, arang na nakog katawa.  this is true:

panel of doctors asked a question during her diplomate orals---

my niece:  i'm sorry, doc.  my mind has gone blank...

panel:  come on, what is it?

my niece [shouting]: god, help me!

(suddenly, she rattled off the answers, perfectly, without even glancing at her notes.)

panel: oh, god is so helpful!

just a personal opinion... with how he treated the late angelo reyes, senator trillanes has shown that he may be far from being statesmanlike.  he's too vengeful and uptight, maybe even too self-righteous for comfort.  i reserve my doubts on his reelection.

understandable.  he's an irish playwright and irish republican army member (1923-1964) who was in new york often, and got drunk more often.  he was known more for his drinking than his writings.  but he was witty and quotable.  that's all i know of him.  i'm not familiar with any of his works.

it's sad, but inevitable.  there's no turning back from urban spread.  our only hope is for city planners to be true to the standard ratio of buildings vis-a-vis open spaces of greens.  and i hope they never have to change the name of cabawan, for memory's sake.

Causes of St. Elmo's Fire: The Fire That's Not a Fire

Like lightning, St. Elmo's Fire is plasma, or ionized air that emits a glow.  But while lightning is the movement of electricity from a charged cloud to the ground, St. Elmo's Fire is simply sparking, something like a shot of electrons into the air.  It's a corona discharge, and it occurs when there is a significant imbalance in electrical charge, causing molecules to tear apart, sometimes resulting in a slight hissing sound.

note:  ang corona discharge ani obyus nga way labot sa impeachment.

Sailors tended to attribute the glow to "St. Elmo," a mispronunciation of St. Ermo or St. Erasmus, the patron saint of Mediterranean sailors.  They believed the fire was a sign of salvation from the saint, since the phenomenon occurs most often toward the end of a storm.  Benjamin Franklin and Charles Darwin viewed the weather event through a decidedly more scientific perspective.  But regardless of interpretation, it's clear they were all observing the same phenomenon.  And contrary to popular belief, St. Elmo's Fire doesn't only occur at sea.

As with all electrical phenomena, St. Elmo's Fire is about electrons.  So, what is St. Elmo's Fire if it's not a form of lightning?

Early observers of the phenomenon, mostly sailors on high seas during thunderstorms, seem to have understood they weren't looking at actual fire, because instead of abandoning ship, they took comfort in the sudden glow atop the masts.  Such famous figures as Magellan, Caesar and Columbus experienced St. Elmo's Fire on their journeys.  And Pliny the Elder, who seems to have documented absolutely every natural phenomenon back in the 1st century A.D., beat everyone else to the punch when he described blue flames appearing out of nowhere during thunderstorms.

very interesting...

What Is St. Elmo's Fire?

If you were to look outside your home during a thunderstorm and see a tall streetlamp glowing with blue flames, you might be tempted to call the fire department.  Then you might notice that the streetlamp is on fire but isn't actually burning -- and the water from the fire hose isn't putting out the flames.  At this point, you might be about ready to call a priest, but that, like the call to the fire department, would be unnecessary.  The phenomenon you're witnessing is actually St. Elmo's Fire.

St. Elmo's Fire is a weather phenomenon involving a gap in electrical charge.  It's like lightning, but not quite.  And while it has been mistaken for ball lightning, it's not that, either -- and it's definitely not fire.

Renato Solidum, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), said agencies have sent personnel to determine the fault’s properties and how frequent earthquakes occur in Metro Manila.

“As we speak, the NDRRMC (National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council) is doing many projects, one of which is really studying how large and how often the West Valley fault moves that will affect not only Metro Manila but the surrounding provinces,” he told reporters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

Solidum said scientists from Phivolcs and Geosciences Australia had dug a trench across the West Valley fault since last week.

“Clearly, as we speak we have found very clear traces of the fault in some parts of Metro Manila and we will be able determine in more detail the magnitude and the leads of when the fault is moving,” he said.

“Therefore, based on our study, we must really prepare for strong earthquake in Metro Manila.”

The West Valley Fault, also known as the Marikina fault line, starts from the Sierra Madre and runs through Bulacan, Rodriguez, Rizal, Quezon City, the eastern side of Metro Manila including Pasig, Taguig, Muntinlupa, San Pedro, and Sta. Rosa in Laguna and ends in Carmona, Cavite.

State scientists have claimed that the fault can cause a magnitude 7.2 quake and “is ripe for another major movement.”

“We cannot tell exactly when it (fault) will move because nobody can predict when an earthquake would occur. But if we are going to rely on the data we obtained previously, the fault line moves every 200 to 400 years. The last time it moved was 200 years ago,” Solidum said.

“This means that the period when it (fault line) could move has been reached. But we cannot tell if this would happen in the next few years or if it will take time. What is important is we know this could move and we should prepare,” he added.

Solidum said the Philippines is “really overdue for a strong earthquake.”

“It (magnitude 6.9 earthquake that hit Negros Oriental) happened last Feb. 6 but that will not be the last. Each region, each province in the country would have its own earthquake scenario,” he said.

More than 50 people died during the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that devastated parts of Negros Oriental last month.

Solidum cited the need to conduct more earthquake drills and to ensure that buildings could withstand massive temblors.

The Philippines is vulnerable to earthquakes as it is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire.

MANILA, Philippines - The government yesterday urged the public to prepare for earthquakes as it continues to study the West Valley fault, which is said to be capable of causing a strong temblor that could hit Metro Manila.
